Make your Home Safe

Want to make sure your home is fire safe? Here's a quick and easy checklist you can use to spot any risks or hazards that might cause a fire. It’s important to have an escape plan and a safe place to meet and always remember Get Down, Get Low, Get Out! Kitchen The stovetop is clean and free of any spilled fats or burnt foods.

The rangehood filters have been cleaned recently.

There's a fire extinguisher near the kitchen and I know how to use it.

Living room and bedrooms There are smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, living area and hallway in the house — ideally, long-life photoelectric ones.

Matches, lighters or other fire starting tools are stored out of reach of children.

Powerpoints or multi-boards are not overloaded with appliances that use a lot of power, like heaters.

Lights are fitted with the correct bulb size and rating (in watts).

Electric blankets are in good condition, and not more than 5 years old.

There's a torch near every bed (in case of emergencies).

The fireplace has a screen with a proper fireguard, and the chimney has been checked and/or swept in the last year.

Laundry

There's no lint built up in the clothes dryer filter (you should check this after every use).

The clothes dryer has been checked recently by a professional to ensure there's no dust built up in the back (don't open up the dryer yourself, as this will breach the warranty).

There's plenty of ventilation and air space around the clothes dryer.

If drying next to a heater remember the rule about keeping anything a metre from the heater!

Sky Tower Challenge

The Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge is an annual fundraiser for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). Each year we send firefighters from our station to attend this amazing event. This year it took place on Saturday 22nd May and we had 5 firefighters attending, they climbed 51 flights of stairs which equates to 1,103 individual steps!

RECIPES TO EAT LIKE A QUEEN THIS LONG WEEKEND • IN YOUR OWN PALACE • SMOK E D SALMON AND CAPER CREA M S ANDWIC HES 200g cream cheese, softened 1 teaspoon capers, chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped 2 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 12 slice fresh bread 1/2 cucumber, sliced thinly 150g sliced smoked salmon Mash cheese, capers, parsley, juice and zest. Season well.

Spread four bread slices with cheese mixture and top with cucumber. Spread another four slices with cheese and place, cheese side down, on top. Spread top of this bread with cheese, followed by salmon.

Spread last four bread slices with cheese and place, cheese side down, on top.

Carefully cut off crusts, then cut into triangles.

METHOD 1. Put the flour, sugar and butter into a food processor with a pinch of sea salt and pulse until you have a mixture that looks like breadcrumbs. Crack in the egg, grate in the zest from your orange or lemon and pulse

Cut out rounds of pastry and gently push them into the wells so they come up the sides. Any leftover pastry can be gently pushed back into a ball and rolled

3. Put 1 heaped teaspoon of filling into each jam tart, interspersing and alternating the flavours of jams, curds or jellies.

4. Pop the trays on the middle shelf of the oven and cook for around 12 to 15 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the filling is thick and bubbling. Remove from the oven, leave in the tray to firm slightly, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool for a few minutes before serving.
