ABOUT HARBORLIGHT Founded in 1973, Harborlight Montessori School remains a close‐knit, independent, co‐educational day school located in historic Beverly, on Boston’s North Shore. Harborlight demonstrates leadership in the professional community with recognition from the Massachusetts Department of Education, and licensure with the Department of Early Education and Care. Harborlight is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the American Montessori Society, and the Association of Independent Schools in New England. Harborlight is the laboratory school for the National Center for Montessori Education– New England, a graduate‐ level teacher education institute.

Fostering Early Learning The Infant & Toddler and Early Childhood Programs offer early exposure to academics, decision making, and social relationships. Here, teachers guide children from infancy to school‐age, to be independent, confident, and engaged learners. The multi‐sensory early learning that takes place builds a foundation for abstract reasoning, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.

Step inside the homey classrooms outfitted in miniature‐sized furniture and you will feel the affirmation of natural childhood, sustained through individual attention and secure relationships. From the aromas of cooking projects to playful puddle‐ jumping and vegetable gardening in the play yards, early education extends well beyond the classroom.

DEVELOPING THE WHOLE CHILD

During these crucial years, young children are provided a balance of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional stimulation in order to reach their optimum level of development.

Understanding, caring, self‐ discipline, self‐awareness, and care of self are incorporated into a creative curriculum that supports the young child’s need for security and exploration.

“There is no greater gift we can pass on to our children than an education that fosters a love for learning without a fear of failure.”

Authentic Co-Education Challenged to be responsible for the social and physical components of the multi‐age classroom, Harborlight students create a welcoming and accepting atmosphere while developing considerate and cooperative relationships. Beginning in pre‐kindergarten, children are encouraged to work together, to respect each other’s differences, and to embrace personal challenges with confidence.

PERSONAL ORGANIZATION

“Harborlight students seek challenges, ask questions and express ideas convincingly.”

Moving towards personal organization, the stu‐ dents prioritize, plan, and manage their time in both their independent daily work and with long‐term, collaborative projects. Armed with the skills to seek challenges, ask questions and express ideas convincingly, Middle School stu‐ dents embrace the Socratic Method during mini‐lessons. Shared learning culminates in the presentation of eighth grade individual service learning projects.
