Around and About in Harbor Club... With Judy Stultz
We’ve come to that “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” again as family, friends and festive gatherings take center stage in our lives. We have been a busy lot here in Harbor Club these past few months. The LGA closed out their season ‘til spring. (No frigid weather for these gals). On the other hand, the MGA lets neither wind, rain nor cold keep them from getting out there in blustery weather to hit that little white ball up and down the fairways. (No further comment needed.) The MGA Octoberfest on October 23rd. had the golfers and their wives at the clubhouse celebrating a German themed evening. After a smorgasbord featuring sauerbraten and all the fixins’ the couples filled the dance floor to the music of Notesbug Entertainment. (I love watching y’all do the Electric Slide ~ tried it a few times and tangled everyone up ~ so now I just watch!) Bridge and Bunco groups abound here in Harbor Club, new to the game circuit is Mah Jong, the Japanese tile game. Diane Hamilton learned the game while living in Japan ~ so she and Anne Price (also a top-notch player) passed on their knowledge to HC beginners. Troutdale’s at the Clubhouse offers a monthly guys night out, often featuring Poker games paired with a Scotch tasting. The new big screen TV’s are an ideal setting for weekend football games and a chance to kibitz with other fans. Last year’s Card/Game and Dinner Party event was such a success that the Ladies of the HC Outreach Committee are busy planning another for February 9th. Be sure you don’t miss this one, the soup, salad & sweets dinner is all deliciously home made. It’s a fun night out as you and your friends play your favorite card or board game. And ~ better yet ~ your donations all go to local charities here in Greene County. We seem to have a group of perennial world travelers here in HC ~ and they’ve been at it again. Leigh & Bob Lofgren ~ were gone for 7 weeks as they traveled to Namibia, Malawi, Likoma Island and Phinda Vlei in Northern KwaZula Natal province of South Africa. History buffs, Kathrin and Bill Rudland, did a WWII Tour of Sicily, Southern Italy and Tunisia. The Ledyard’s (Val and Jack), sailed the golden Greek Isles and then visited the intriguing land of Turkey and Istanbul. Janie and Bob Legg were off again as they flew to tour Auckland before boarding the cruise ship that would bring them back to the states. HC’s Literary Ladies of the Lake (Book Club) met at the Washington Grass Inn for their annual Christmas luncheon. A lively discussion of their recent book, “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon, was followed by a gift/book exchange. HCLL Ladies On the Go ~ The Atlanta Gift Mart in October gave ladies an early start in filling their Christmas lists. In November they traveled to Macon’s historic Opera House to see the hilarious, “Menopause ~ the Musical”. Dickens, “A Christmas Carole”, at the Alliance Theater took the group to Atlanta in December ~ with a pre-show dinner at Wisteria, an intimate little restaurant across from Inman Park. “Jammie clad ”Harbor Club kids and grandkids gathered at the clubhouse on December 10th. to meet, greet and have breakfast with SANTA! All were on their best behavior so the big man in the long white beard wouldn’t pass them by on Christmas Eve. Ladies in red were distinctly noticeable ~ as basic black seemed to be the fashion preference of the evening at the Harbor Club Christmas Party. Drinks, dinner and dancing were the order of the night as friends wished one another, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! And so those wishes are given from me to you as the old year winds down. Enjoy the Season, give thanks for family and good friends ~ and make way for the New Year to come.

Harbor Club Game Group
If meeting new people while getting together for fun and food is your “thing” ~ you should look into joining Harbor Club’s Game Group. There are over 80 members (you can also sign on to sub) who meet in groups of eight every other month to play the card game, Texas Tango. Each couple brings an hors d oeuvre to share along with their drink of preference. Hosts are rotated so that each couple only entertains once during the year. Sheila and John Connelly are in charge of setting up the groups each year.
At the end of the Game year an Awards party is held and prizes given to the first through sixth place winners. The one with the overall lowest score is awarded the infamous Fanny Flamingo, to be displayed in his/her front yard for the entire year. Winners for this past season were ~ (from 1st. to 6th.) Patricia Balduff, Louise Hull, Lynda Jochim, Tony Dejno, Jim Cerny and Bev Oram. Foster mom, Kay Dejno, will be taking care of Fanny this year. Harbor Club to Provide Boat Storage at Marina
Harbor Club on Georgia’s Lake Oconee has announced that it has reached an agreement with nearby Granite Shoals Marina that will provide dry dock storage for Harbor Club property owners. The Marina is located near Harbor Club’s back gate. It houses a restaurant and a fueling station, one of only a few “on water” stations on Lake Oconee. Armor Bridge Marina, LLC has purchased Granite Shoals Marina. According to Armor Bridge owner, Brandon Matney, boat storage could be available as early as Spring 2012. “Harbor Club property owners have long wanted a managed facility to store and dry dock water craft. This acquisition will make that wait a reality”, Matney said. Harbor Club residents have expressed that the Club owners have always been steadfast in their pursuit to add amenities and make improvements to the neighborhood. The addition of the Marina is consistent with that pursuit. The Developers are debt-free and are currently providing financing at very attractive rates on select home sites at Harbor Club. Harbor Club is widely recognized as one of America’s premier lake/golf neighborhoods, boasting an 18-hole Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish championship course, tennis, swimming, fitness, croquet and fine Clubhouse dining. According to Links Magazine, it is one of the top 15 best golf neighborhoods in the world.

Harbor Club Ladies Golf Association News The Harbor Club Ladies Golf Association will kick off the 2011 season on March 31st. We will be at the clubhouse at 11:00 am for signing up for LGA and paying dues, which are $50.00 for the year. We will have a shotgun start at noon for our opening day scramble. After golf there will be some light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. There are lots of fun things planned for the year: the Member/Member tournament with a wonderful party the night before, the Member/Guest (it will be in May this year!), the flag tournament, Breast Cancer Tournament, 3 Club Challenge and lots more fun activities. Kathy Kurelic will again surprise us on play day will old and new opportunities for fun while still playing golf that can be posted for handicap! The Hole In One Club will be alive and well for those who wish to participate. All ladies who are members of Harbor Club are invited to join the LGA. You can get applications to fill out from any of the board members and dues may be paid on or before our kickoff day - get a check made out to HCLGA to Carol Gordon. FROM THE LESSON TEE… “IMPROVE YOUR FEEL ON THE GREENS”—there are a few things to know when it comes to making a good putting stroke; such as, keeping the body relatively still, allowing the arms and hands to work together, and hitting the ball solidly. Jackie Burke and Bob Toski came up with a drill years ago that hones a great stroke without cluttering your mind with mechanics. Whether you’re in your living room or on the practice green, place a sneaker on the ground; and address the heel with your putter. Your goal is to “putt” the sneaker, trying to move it forward a few inches; you want to give the back of it a good pop, which will help ingrain the feeling of a solid strike. This promotes a forward-leaning shaft and a flat left wrist at impact. Spend some time working on this drill, and your feel for proper impact will sharpen significantly. Harbor Club continues to be a great place to live. Despite the downward spiral in 2010 with many local businesses unable to endure the tough economic conditions, Harbor Club fortunately enters 2011 a debt free community. Additionally, our work staff completed 2010 with the same number of employees employed at the end of 2009. Again, in 2010, Harbor Company continued the employee Christmas Party, giving each employee the same pro-rated Christmas bonus as in previous years. Harbor Club staff, administration, and ownership send a sincere thank you to all property owners who made contributions to the employee Christmas Fund. These additional contributions added an additional bonus to each employee. The true spirit of giving made the holidays much brighter for our valued employees. This is just one example of why Harbor Club retains its history of being the best kept secret in the South. Harbor Club is very fortunate to have so many property owners who volunteer their time for the betterment of our Harbor Club community. The MPOA, under the leadership of Vince Mancuso and staff, has done an excellent job in supervising community improvements and managing MPOA revenue. The MPOA financial condition remains very solid and anticipates another surplus for 2010. Harbor Club continues to offer the real estate referral program. Any Harbor Club property owner who comes to the sales office and registers a referral resulting in a Harbor Club owned property sale will be rewarded with a three thousand dollar ($3,000.00) credit. The credit may be used at the Harbor Club pro shop, club restaurant, or applied to the referee’s membership dues. From the Desk of the Golf Course Superintendent... “Understanding Frost Delays”
The winter months are upon us, which is a great relief from this unbearable summer, but the colder temperatures also bring with them new problems that we all must be aware of. Experienced golfers know to expect frost delays in the winter months, but few really understand them so let’s try to shed some light on the subject. Frost is basically frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass which makes it hard and brittle. A grass plant is actually 90% water, therefore the plant also freezes in the presence of frost. Walking on or mowing a frozen plant causes the plant to break and ruptures the cell walls within the plant, thereby losing its ability to function normally. The proof generally comes two or three days later as the injured plants turn brown and die. Here in the southeast with our colder nights and mild days, as turf managers, we have to not only be conscious of our above ground structures at this time, but keep in mind the precious root structure that we work so hard to preserve for those tough summer months. Many days as we begin to warm up, the presence of frost may not be visible, but we are still not allowing play on the course, why you may ask? Many nights in Georgia drop well below the freezing point and actually can freeze a green as far as 6 to 8 inches deep, as the day temperatures rise, the green will begin to thaw out from the top down. It is during this time that the plant is the most vulnerable. As you walk on a green or attempt to mow a green that is in this thawing process the loose, thawed out areas of the green will actually move against the hard, frozen areas below the surface, creating a scissoring effect that damages and sometimes even cut off the roots at the point of the two different stages of thawing rubbing against each other. Grass plants produce most of their root structure in the fall of the year and it is imperative that we preserve this over the winter months to ensure a good starting point for the spring with the goal of going into the summer months with the plant as healthy as we can get it. As turf managers we are always looking a season ahead and I hope that this may bring some understanding of how even the winter months can add to the success of the year as a whole, as painful as the wait may be. Security News…
The security staff would like to thank all the residents for the kindness shown during the holidays. Your thoughtful gifts and kind words make working at Harbor Club a joy. The security team has a goal of keeping Harbor Club safe for all residents and visitors. Recently we have had to issue several tickets for speeding, please remember the speed limit is 35 miles per hour on Club Drive and 25 Miles per hour on some of the side streets. The Patrol vehicle is equipment with radar and camera equipment to record all violations. The patrol vehicle will be out on the weekends. With the coming of winter, we could see colder temperatures and icy road conditions. Please be careful when driving. Please remember to call security at (706) 453-0931 and inform them when you have service people, house setters, pet setters or visitors coming to Harbor Club. The security guard cannot let anyone through the gate without being notified by the property owner. All Guests must stop at the security gate to get a pass. Anyone allowing visitors or contractors to use the back gate will have the use of the back gate terminated. The back gate has multiple cameras recording and monitoring all vehicles that enter or leave Harbor Club via the back gate. Please accompany your guest if they are using the tennis courts. We wish everyone a Happy, Prosperous New Year, be safe and enjoy winter at Harbor Club.

Happy New Year, here are some dates of interest for our property owners: We tentatively scheduled the 2011 Annual Meeting for Saturday, February 26, 2011, 8:30 AM at the Carriage House. We’ll be mailing a letter to the property owners announcing a firm date once the final 2010 financial data is recieved from our accountant and we’ll provide you with an agenda and additional useful information. ---------As previously announced, the 2010 commercial vehicle decals expired on January 7, property owner decals expire on January 31 and the decals were available from adminstration since early December. -----------The unchanged $900 dues will, once again, become payable on March 1 and delinquent on April 1. We anticipate that information provided by our accountant will confirm that we met or improved upon the projected revenue and expense estimates and that we achieved or exceeded the $100,000 budget surplus estimation, all discussed at our last meeting.
