An update from Fr Keith at St Helens in Hangleton

Greetings from St Helen’s and St Richard’s in Hangleton and Knoll. I hope you are all keeping as well as you’re able.

The demands of the last three months in lockdown have been a challenge for many to say the least, while others seemed to have found it liberating.

For some, the experience of working at home has been good and may well remain a feature of life. For others, and especially those in furlough, lockdown has meant living in the shadow of unemployment. Many industries are struggling for survival and there is much day to day economic hardship. I was talking with a worker from Chichester Diocesan Family Support Work recently who told me that the demand for their foodbank has doubled.

We’ve been brought face-to-face with some big inequalities in our society. And all this among the tragedy of COVID-19 related deaths, a cost beyond words. As someone said, even one death is too many.

My own experience has been mixed. In my work I’ve enjoyed using technology to livestream services, indeed we’ll continue to livestream and record services when we go back to public worship in church. However, as I give thanks for the wonders and blessings of the internet I’ve also come to see its limitations. Facetime and Skype have been a lifeline for many in isolation but can it really compare with the joy of actually holding in our arms a loved one, maybe a child or a grandchild, for the first time in months? Human beings like to be with other human beings, physically, to be literally ‘in touch.’ I’ve found this whenever I’ve conducted a funeral during the lockdown. Being socially distanced from another in grief is hard. To be apart at such a time. We’re just not made like that are we?

As I sit writing this, we’re preparing to open our church again for public worship. The first service is on Sunday 12 July at 10am in St Helen’s Hall. It will be good to be with people again, to be together. At the heart of church life is this very human leaning towards each other. I’m saying this not because you may be the kind of person who doesn’t like religious talk (and that I fear you may think I’m trying to sell Jesus to you and switch off) but that I believe the point of religion is to enable us to be fully human. My faith, and my work, is not about being religious or me telling you what to believe or how to behave, it’s about what it means to be fully human. I’ve always felt that the deeper you go with that thought, the more mysterious life gets.

All church services, events and community centre bookings remain cancelled until further notice. Regretfully, we are not able to open the church for any Sunday services, or any other of our usual activities, until more of the pandemic restrictions are lifted. The Rev. Church members and friends are keeping in touch and helping each other to stay positive during this difficult time. Please contact the minister or any church elder, or member, if you need help in any way. We are working out ways that we can meet together again. Current restrictions The church hall remains closed at present but we are hoping to re-open in September/October time, please check the website for further news. The church is now open every day for quiet prayer with all the social distancing regulations and safety precautions in place.

The church porch is open every day to receive food donations for the foodbank for Family Support Work at Garton House where it is distributed to those in need in these very difficult and challenging times.

Staff member Aaron Checksfield has been volunteering at the new food hub in Hove run by the Hangleton & Knoll Project Aaron has been part of a team that has helped deliver hundreds of meals to people in need during the lockdown.

Aaron, aged 21, said: ‘I’ve helped to put eggs into boxes and extra goodies into the bags. It was great to be working with my community to help others.’ We are very proud to employ Aaron at Hangleton Community Centre. Well done Aaron.

Sally Wadsworth is back to tell us what to look out for on the reserve in August and September...

I don’t know about you, but when I’m walking on the hill, I’m usually looking down at the flowers, bees and butterflies. I occasionally take in the bushes and tree branches to see if anything special is roosting, or flitting about, but I rarely gaze upward into the sky. These are good months to look skywards to see what birds maybe flying overhead and either leaving Sussex for their summer feeding grounds, or coming to the UK to overwinter.

The first to leave after breeding here are the swifts. They arrive from Africa in May, leave from late July and are usually all gone by mid/end of August. You often see them feeding on our rich insect supply, swooping and arcing over the hill in majestic displays of acrobatic expertise. They don’t breed on the hill, but find nooks and crannies in the eves of houses so if you are doing renovations, please don’t block all the holes up, or alternatively put up a swift nesting box for next year. The RSPB give lots of advice on swift conservation, so does Swift Conservation UK. Swifts are always on the wing and never land except to nest, they even sleep on the wing. In level flight ,they can reach nearly 70 mph. Next to leave in mid/late September, are the swallows, which again you can see over the reserve. Similarly, they overwinter in Africa and are usually one of the first birds to arrive back to the UK, often in early April or even late March if the weather is good.

They migrate by day at low altitude and can cover 200 miles a day at speeds of 17-20 mph. Last to leave are house martins and often they wait until early October. It would be extremely rare to see a sand martin over our reserve.

All migrants feed up so they have lots of fat reserves before they set off on their mammoth journeys. They can gather in large numbers and set off together. I suppose it may be a case of safety in numbers. It may be the reduction in daylight hours, or lack of insects that triggers migration, but they seem to know when the time is right and timing is everything.

Clear, calm weather is needed to get a good start – if they leave too early, they may run out of reserves, leave too late and they may hit bad weather. As you’d expect, not all survive the journey back. Also, it does not help that in some countries such as North Africa, Greece, Malta and Italy, people are waiting to trap them. Other factors have caused significant decline in these bird numbers, such as reduction in insects, climate change and changes in farming practices.

They really are up against it and it’s amazing to think that so many survive and as individual species, they have been doing this every year for thousands of years.

I have mentioned some birds that leave at this time of year, but what about the birds coming the other way. Fieldfares and Redwings usually start to arrive in October and you may see these on the hill in the scrubby and wooded areas, or hopping over the grassland. Some blackbirds are migrants coming over from the continental Europe and we have up to 15 million overwintering in the UK. There’s always something to see on the reserve so keeps your eyes peeled, stop and look skywards for a change and who knows what you will spot.

We meet about 10am every Tuesday (weatherpermitting) on the grass verge near the West Hove Golf Club. We can park on the verge here. Wear stout shoes or walking boots, suitable clothing and bring gardening gloves. We provide the tools. Recipe corner: Anyone for tea and cake?

Victoria Sandwich Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas mark 4 2 x 7” sandwich tins, greased and lined with baking parchment 6 oz soft margarine 6 oz caster sugar 3 eggs beaten 6 oz self-raising flour and 1 teaspoon baking powder For the filling: strawberry or raspberry jam and a little caster sugar This is an all-in-one-cake so put all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and beat well with an electric mixer until thoroughly blended. Divide this mixture between the two cake tins and level off. Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes or until risen and light brown. Leave to cool in the tins for a few moments and turn out onto a cooling rack. When completely cold, sandwich together with the jam and sprinkle sugar on the top.

Scones Preheat oven to 220C/450F/Gas mark 8 Lightly grease a baking sheet 8 oz self raising flour 1 oz caster sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 oz butter or margarine, softened 1 egg, beaten and a little milk (or plain yoghurt or buttermilk can be used instead) Measure the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl then add the butter and rub in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. Add the egg and enough milk to form a firm dough. Turn out onto a floured board and knead lightly and then roll out to a thickness of 1/2”. Using a 2”cutter, cut out the scones and place on the prepared tin. Bake in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes until pale golden brown and well risen.

Place them on a cooling rack. Serve split, buttered with jam and cream.

Both these recipes freeze, but only sandwich the cakes before eating.
