Homecoming 2017 Fun Guide

From the Editor

One of my favorite things about working at HappyValley.com is the partnership we share with local businesses. I have walked through muddy fields to the future site of a new event facility, toured the kitchen where the magic happens in imported French Canadian ovens, trekked the labyrinthine basement of the Eisenhower, caught my breath at the sight of the last, urgent pop of autumn color in the mountains surrounding Raystown Lake. Every experience with our advertisers is unique in the same way Happy Valley itself is special to each of us in our own way. Cara Aungst While the hotels and attractions and foods are all so different — from Kimchi’s bolgogi to Hi-Way Pizza’s Vodka Flaky to the perfect Black and Smoky Blue burger from The Field; from the luxury of the Nittany Lion Inn to the homey comfort of Ingleby Lodge — there is a common thread woven through them all. They love it here. Just like we do. They love the football weekends, the laughter, and the fans — you and me — who ebb and flow through their doors. They love being part of a place that’s earning more and more national recognition — the least stressful city in the US, one of the best college towns anywhere. Talk to one of these businesses long enough, and someone will inevitably say, “This place is awesome. I told you so.” Whether you get to live here (lucky you), visit several times a year, or are planning the perfect football weekend from afar, HappyValley.com and our amazing partners, can help. We’ll hook you up with great shows from the Center for Performing Arts, help you save on a room with HappyValleyVIP, direct you to the perfect brew, the best pizza and our top picks for everything fun. You can find our complete list of partners starting on page 59. It's a great start to planning your next big weekend. Trust us. Because we love it here, too.

The Ultimate Home Game Weekend Our Facebook Fans Weigh in By Jeff Cavanaugh

Whether it is coming into town on Friday to stay with friends and catch Ted McCloskey & the Hi Fi’s at the Phyrst with $1 Coors Light drafts, or driving into the Beaver Stadium parking lots early Saturday and walking downtown to shop and grab a bite to eat at The Deli, there are no wrong answers when it comes to having the ultimate home game weekend. The one and only thing we can all agree on is that the perfect Penn State home game experience isn’t complete without a Nittany Lions win! If you are planning your first trip to Happy Valley or are looking for some suggestions to build on your own home game

Winter 2017 Fun Guide

traditions, here is a look at some of the best things to do on a Penn State home game weekend.

Friday Penn State football excitement starts just after checking into the Nittany Lion Inn, Toftrees or Carnegie Inn & Suites. The lines get longer and the chants get louder — but there is not anywhere else in the country Penn State students, alumni and fans would rather be.

“From the time I arrive Friday to my drive home on Sunday afternoon, I feel like I’m in my early 20s just like when I was here in the '80s. It keeps me young.” “From the time I arrive Friday to Saturday’s game to my drive home on Sunday afternoon, I feel like I’m in my late teens/early 20s just like when I was here in the '80s,” Christopher K. said. “It keeps me young.” 9

Up and down College Ave. and Beaver Ave., Penn State fans old and young get together at places that have been regular stops for decades of students. David G., a 67-year-old Penn State alum, recalled going to The Shandygaff and Zeno’s. Zeno’s has been a Penn State institution since 1972 with an incredible beer selection and great food; but the history of The Shandygaff outdates that of even Penn State University — opening sometime in 1848, when the $6 liquor pitcher special wouldn’t have sounded like such a great deal. And for Penn State students, the highlight for home games is camping out at Beaver Stadium in Nittanyville — a tradition that began before the 2005 Ohio State game to ensure students score some of the best seats in the stadium.

Saturday Gameday! There is nothing like waking up or driving into State College on a Saturday morning before a huge Penn State game. “It’s when you pull up to the stadium in the morning and kickoff is still hours away; there is still dew on the grass in the parking lot because the sun still hasn’t risen over the north end zone scoreboard,” Elizabeth Ann said. “It’s these Penn State mornings — when you’re one of the first ones there and the mornings are filled with anticipation and excitement with some of your favorite people in the world — that are one of the best parts of a football weekend.” One common thread of all responses we received about the ul-

timate game weekend was that tailgating at Beaver Stadium is one of the most important and revered parts of a Penn State experience. Outside of Beaver Stadium, tens of thousands of tents, RVs, Penn State flags, grills and tailgate games are everywhere for as far as you can see.

“The tailgating atmosphere is an amazing sight. It is like a huge campground…with the amazing smells of food on the grill.” “The tailgating atmosphere is an amazing sight,” Mark said. “It is like a huge campground without the trees along with the amazing smells of food on the grill.” Catering from Pizza Mia!'s downtown location makes tailgating even better. And tailgating at Penn State is a generational and family affair. Barbara N. said that her favorite thing about a Penn State weekend is tailgating at the stadium parking lot as the family meets up from all directions to enjoy the game, and great tailgate foods. Amanda Jo added that “Everyone is always glowing, and I love bringing my children to show them the tradition of Happy Valley.” The fun of a Penn State gameday doesn’t just begin and end in parking lots around Beaver Stadium — downtown shopping, sightseeing, dining and drinking are a must at some point Saturday as well. The Ultimate Home Game… Continued from page 13

If there is one food that everyone tries to get their hands on at some point Saturday, it is the legendary grilled sticky from Ye Olde College Diner on College Ave. Even former Penn State AllAmerican and current Jacksonville Jaguars star Paul Posluszny still raves about the grilled stickies. “I love desserts — grilled stickies are something that are unique to Penn State,” Posluszny said. “You can’t find them anywhere else quite like they do it there.” Michelle W. and Mike E. both posted about spending early Saturday shopping downtown at Family Clothesline, sitting outside at Café 210 on College Ave. and, of course, hitting the Penn State Berkey Creamery for some of the best ice cream in the world. After you get your shopping and downtown eating done, one of the best pre-game traditions is the team arrival on the blue

Winter 2017 Fun Guide

buses. Fans line Porter Road, several hours before kickoff, to cheer on the arrival of the football team. Coach James Franklin sits in the first seat of the passenger side while the starting quarterback, Trace McSorely, sits in the first seat on the driver’s side of the bus. And for all the fun and all the tradition that goes on in town on Friday night and up until kickoff Saturday, it is all business once the team comes out of the tunnel in front of screaming Penn State fans. The atmosphere at Beaver Stadium is the best in all of college football, and you were lucky enough to attend the White Out game, you'll agree that there is no experience quite like it anywhere in the world. As James Franklin says, “The only thing I like more than Christmas is a ‘White Out’ football game.” I’d guess that most Penn State fans, students and alumni can agree with coach! Plan your trip now to see one of the remaining Penn State home games as the Nittany Lions close out one of the most memorable seasons in recent memory. It’s one of your last chances to see Heisman hopeful Saquon Barkley and this amazing team!

Pizza Mia! Brings Great Pizza and Community Involvement to New Location in Lock Haven By Cara Aungst

After serving the Bellefonte area for 15 years, Pizza Mia! expanded into downtown State College. They have served State College for a year now, bringing the freshest, most local pizza made with ingredients from their farm to your table. Pizza Mia! is a cult-like favorite in Bellefonte because of their local meats and produce and perfect dough that headlines in their pizzas, cinnamon sticks and Dôgies (Wondering what a Dôgie is? Order one and find out!). They grow much of their produce on their own acreage, and work together with local producers like Spic-E Specialty Foods, Fasta and Company, Hill Top Farms, Mackeyville Produce and Mark’s Meats to provide the highest quality ingredients for their pizza, salads and sandwiches. They use these fresh ingredients to make seasonal favorites like holiday stromboli stuffed with real turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes served with cranberries and corn on the side. And don’t forget to schedule a delivery from Santa for your

children or holiday party … Santa and one of his elves will deliver your food to you! And big news: Pizza Mia! is opening location number three! They are moving into the old Papa John’s location at 300 High Street, Flemington, with limited seating, takeout and delivery to all of the Mill Hall and Lock Haven area. Turkey stromoboli With owners that live in the Mill Hall area, Pizza Mia! is looking forward to serving Clinton County residents with Clinton County food. And they believe that there is no better way to do that than with pizza. Studies have shown that our bodies produce serotonin — a chemical that increases our happiness — when we eat pizza. Pizza Mia! loves to create an environment where people can come to the table and enjoy good food and each other. You might even say have a piece for peace! Pizza Mia! believes in making a difference where they are. Over the past 15 years, they have donated 10,000+ pizzas to the Red Cross as well as many other local charities and organizations. They show the same passion in their community involvement, regularly sponsoring ball teams, delivering pizzas to schools and becoming a de facto life of the party at local events. In their new location, they look forward to participating at the Lock Haven Regatta. The Lock Haven location will offer the same menu and specials as their other locations, with counter service and limited seating, starting November 20. A renovated dining room is slated for 2018. If you are interested in being part of one of the most beloved brands in Happy Valley, give them a call! They are hiring at all locations. Community is their middle name, and they are thrilled to be a part Bellefonte, State College and Flemington. Call or order online, and enjoy free delivery. Tussey Mountain: The Best Reason to Look Forward to Cold, Snowy Winter By Jeff Cavanaugh

With temperatures hitting an uncharacteristic 80 degrees in October in Pennsylvania, everyone is undoubtedly looking forward to cooler temperatures. For all of the dining and recreation highlights that Happy Valley offers throughout the year, the skiing, snowboarding and tubing at Tussey Mountain make winter the most wonderful time of year in Central Pennsylvania. Tussey Mountain is an all-seasons resort, but this time of year, skiing takes center stage. You can ski on 50 acres, with three ski and snowboard lifts and a snowtube lift that takes you up some of

the most impressive slopes in the northeast. The slopes range from the Little Bear beginner’s slope to the most challenging slopes on the mountain, Upper Tuscarora and Upper Shamokin, providing a challenging and fun time for all skill levels. One of the most unique and fun parts of Tussey Mountain is the terrain park on the lower Utah and Tuscarora slopes. The terrain park features boxes, rails, pipes and a number of assorted jumps that give you an opportunity to show your skills and impress your friends. Everything is more fun with a group of friends, and Tussey Mountain makes sure to accommodate groups and parties of all ages and sizes. Tussey offers a 20% discount on skiing, snowboarding or tubing for groups of 10 or more people. And while winter birthdays are usually reserved for inside venues, Tussey Mountain can host your birthday party on the tubing hill — everyone gets three hours of sliding, plus a reserved table in the Lodge with pizza and refreshments. The tubing hill can also be rented for private functions during non-business hours, for any function or company retreat. Tussey Mountain also offers youth ski and snowboard programs for kids ages six through 12. The programs, beginning in January on Saturdays or Sundays, give young skiers and boarders a chance to improve their skills and make friends on the

slopes. You can find this year's pricing at TusseyMountain.com. And whether it’s before you hit the slopes or after a long day of skiing, Edges Pub, located in the Lodge at Tussey Mountain, is a must visit. Edges is one of State College’s best kept secrets, and is only open during the winter season! The food, atmosphere and live entertainment at Edges throughout the winter are second-tonone. As Tussey Mountain says, Edges is the most exclusive and elusive night spot in Happy Valley! Weather reports are calling for a chilly winter for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, which will translate to an above-normal snow season — and that is music to the ears of Central Pennsylvania skiers and snowboarders. Make sure to visit Tussey Mountain this winter to hit the slopes and enjoy the beautiful Central Pennsylvania outdoors! Tussey Mountain slopes and lifts are open to skiers and snowboarders carrying either a season pass or daily ticket. In peak season, chair lifts operate from noon until 10 p.m. on weekdays; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and holidays; and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Tussey Mountain is typically open for skiing, snowboarding and tubing from December through March. Best Seasonal Indulgences By Holly Riddle

With colder temperatures come more decadent menu options. A little more butter, a little more chocolate, a little more cheese graces the ingredient lists that aim to make diners cozy and content. Looking for the best cold weather indulgences in Happy Valley? Look no further than our list filled with tempting treats both savory and sweet.

The Field Burger & Tap Most visit The Field at Toftrees for the restaurant’s great burgers (obviously) and excellent hard milkshakes, made with everyone’s favorite ice cream from Berkey Creamery! When the snow falls outside, though, you may want to skip the cold desserts (but if you choose a milkshake regardless, we certainly wouldn’t blame you!) and go for something a bit more warming. 28

Dam Donuts

How about a seasonal cocktail? Beyond the awesome bourbonbased cocktails on the drink menu, you can also find a fruity and cinnamon-y option in The Fallen Pear, featuring Grey Goose Pear, St. Germaine and pear nectar. If you are one of those who aren’t a little fearful of ice cream in the winter months, bundle up and indulge in the pumpkin pie hard milkshake! Before dessert, you have plenty of comforting options for dinner — try the new Not Mom’s Grilled Cheese with a side of the tomato basil soup for a timeless experience with a modern twist, or a healthy serving of the sweet potato fries.

Hi-Way Pizza Pub West The latest Hi-Way Pizza Pub location is now open on the west side of town, on West College. Of course, the local staple’s pizza is hardly limited to winter dining, but if you’ve never been, this pub is so much more than just pizza! Their seasonal pumpkin ravioli isn’t to be missed, and it’s only available through Nov. 31. Made totally fresh and from scratch, it’s finished off with a walnut pesto sauce and best enjoyed with a draft Dogfish Head Punkin Ale. Had your fill of pumpkin this season? No worries. Hi-Way Pizza has plenty of other hearty pasta, pizza and appetizer selections.

indulgent favorite, head to Dam Donuts, where the pumpkin selection includes pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice and pumpkin French toast. What more could you need? The pumpkin varieties are available through Thanksgiving. Other donut selections that may appeal to your seasonal palate include the Autumn Apple (cinnamon sugar, apple filling and vanilla icing) and Maple Toffee. You can also make your own variety, with all the shop’s various icing and topping options.

Gigi’s Southern Table More pumpkin? Yes, please, and this time, have it in your cocktail. The Gigi’s Pumpkin Whiskey Jar features bourbon, Tait Farm pumpkin butter, lemon juice and ginger beer, among other ingredients. There’s also the Gigi’s Apple Whiskey Jar, with a similar flavor profile. The Orchard Thief includes more apple goodness, with gin, Applejack brandy and Tait Farm pear shrub. If you enjoy the restaurant’s iconic martinis, you may find the fall flavors you’re looking for in the Rhett Butler (tequila, hard cider, pear liqueur, lemon juice and honey). After all this indulgence, if you’re looking for a good middle ground (and maybe some vegetables), order the Autumn Beet Salad, with roasted red beets, heirloom carrots, spiced walnuts and more. Or, throw that middle ground out the window, and visit on a Wednesday for build-your-own-mac-‘n-cheese, 4-9 p.m., and half-off bottles of wine, 4-7 p.m. The Field Burger & Tap

Downtown Tree Lighting An earlier holiday event, the State College downtown tree lighting, Nov. 16, 5:30-7:30 p.m., is the perfect kick-off to the Yuletide season. Pennsylvania Military Museum Kids Day Not every activity on your winter break itinerary has to be holiday-themed! Stop by the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg on Kids Day, Nov. 18, 12-3 p.m. Children of all ages can try on field and head gear from the museum’s education collection. Additional education stations will be set up throughout the museum for fun activities.

last seven NCAA titles, and standing-room only tickets were made available to the general public on Oct. 19. Across the commonwealth, the Lions will compete at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia on Nov. 19, and they’ll also travel to Lehigh for a dual meet on Dec. 3.

Notable home matches: Nov. 12 Bucknell Jan. 19 Purdue Jan. 26 Minnesota Feb. 3 Ohio State Feb. 10 Iowa (at Bryce Jordan Center)

Men’s Ice Hockey Guy Gadowsky and the Nittany Lions are back after a historic season a year ago, when they won the Big Ten championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, and also came within one win of the Frozen Four. Penn State played an early conference series at Minnesota in October, though the majority of Big Ten games will come after the New Year, with fans having the opportunity to see nearly all Big Ten opponents, including Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish joined the Big Ten as an affiliate member earlier this year.

Women’s Ice Hockey First-year coach Jeff Kampersal arrives from Princeton, where he won 327 games over 21 seasons. The Nittany Lions compete in College Hockey America (CHA) and won nine games a season ago. This year, the Lions have already garnered some individual accolades, with sophomore goalie Daniela Paniccia having been named the CHA Goalie of the Week on Oct. 9. In a series against Union, Paniccia made four saves in the third period of a 3-1 win, and then she added another 20 saves in a 1-1 tie. In making 24 saves, Paniccia had a goals-against-average of 0.71 and boasted a save percentage of .960. She led CHA in both categories for that weekend.

Notable home matches: Jan. 19/20 Syracuse Jan. 30 Princeton Feb. 16/17 RIT Feb. 23/24 Lindenwood

Men’s Basketball Patrick Chambers was characteristically upbeat during the team’s media day in October, assessing the offseason and upcoming campaign this way: “I’m really looking forward to this season. I want to see the development of these players. I’ve been watching a lot of film from last year and what we did all summer. Most of the team committed to both summer sessions, which is phenomenal… I feel like we’ve really bonded and come together as a group.” Senior guard Shep Garner returns, as does the team’s sophomore trio from Philadelphia: guards Tony Carr and Nazeer Bostick, and forward Lamar Stevens. Junior guard Josh Reaves rounds out the backcourt, with redshirt sophomore Mike Watkins adding size and muscle to the frontcourt.

Women’s Basketball Coquese Washington and the Lady Lions won 21 games last season and appeared in the NIT; and for fans looking to attend home games this season, you probably won’t be disappointed. The Lady Lions finished 16-2 at the Bryce Jordan Center during the 2016-17 season. For fans in the western part of the commonwealth, the Lady Lions will play at Pitt on Dec. 17, and then kick off the home slate of the Big Ten schedule in late December.

Women’s Volleyball Penn State’s 2017 season has been outstanding through the middle of October, with the Nittany Lions boasting a 17-1 overall record and a 6-1 Big Ten mark as of Oct. 15. The campaign began in late August, though fans will have a few more opportunities to cheer on the Lions at Rec Hall. And as usual, plenty of supporters will likely show up. During the team’s home sweep of Michigan on Oct. 14, nearly 5,000 fans were in attendance at Rec Hall, which represented the largest home crowd of the volleyball season. Want to see what everyone’s talking about? Then head to Rec Hall for one (or all) of the team’s three home matches in November.

Notable home matches: Nov. 4 Rutgers Nov. 11 Maryland Nov. 15 Indiana

5 Reasons Why

Business Is Booming in Happy Valley 1. Startup Support

With resources like the TechCelerator at State College, Happy Valley Launchbox and Invent Penn State, startups can receive the community and financial support needed to get good ideas off the ground.

There’s never been a better time to do business in Happy Valley. Local growth is fueled by innovation and spurred on by new startups and technologies coming to the region. Here are five aspects of Happy Valley culture driving the push toward becoming the Silicon Valley of Central Pennsylvania.

2. The Latest Tech Trends

61

Sixty-one companies have gone into business through the TechCelerator at State College, generating more than $10 million in revenue and creating more than 130 jobs.

The Internet of Things, a $737 trillion-dollar industry, is infiltrating State College, from new Penn State courses to downtown parking meters. Ten to 15 local companies meet every other month to explore regional IoT projects.

$737 Trillion

#10 Best City for Livability

4. Entrepreneur Education

3. Groundbreaking Research

With a research-heavy university like Penn State in town, startups and businesses benefit from the groundbreaking discoveries. The school consistently ranks on top nationally for spending on science and engineering research, with $801 million in total research support. The school’s research generates nearly $2 billion in the state’s economy through new tech, jobs and other impacts.

36

Beyond the research component, education is available for entrepreneurs and businesspeople of all types in Happy Valley. Penn State recently announced a new master’s program focusing on professional studies in corporate innovation and entrepreneurship. People can also benefit from groups like the Centre Region Entrepreneur Network, where entrepreneurs network and learn from one another. Plus, State College was named the No. 10 Best City for Entrepreneurs by Livability.com.

#1 Happiest Small Town

5. Happy: Plain & Simple

Happy people are productive people. Happy Valley is the No. 1 small town for happiness in the country according to Movoto, and one of the least stressful places to live according to Psychology Today. Home ownership is high, commutes are low and walkability is easy. When you’ve got all those factors, it’s not hard to find success.

Doing Good: Local Nonprofits By Holly Riddle

As Happy Valley comes alive during the holidays, and downtown streets are decked out in twinkling lights and greenery, it’s easy to bask in the joy, warmth and cheer that comes with the season. These perfect winter moments leave you feeling as if there really is no better place to live than Happy Valley. After all, beyond the trimmings and trees, our community is one of fellowship, camaraderie and so many shared experiences and values. We care for our neighbors and friends as one big family, and our “give back” culture is clearly visible through the hundreds of nonprofits that call State College home. As you pay it forward this holiday season, you can find plenty of ways to support those Happy Valley families and organizations who need it most. Whether you want to help feed a hungry child,

Winter 2017 Fun Guide

ensure the success of local students or care for those who protect and serve, your gift will only strengthen the bonds of community in Happy Valley.

Give a Family in Need a Happy Holiday The American hunger epidemic often goes overlooked or unnoticed, as so many of us have the tendency to think we simply don’t know anyone who faces food insecurity. However, the grim reality is that one in six people go without meals they need, both around the country and right here in Happy Valley. A gift to the State College Food Bank helps ensure that fewer individuals and families go hungry, by making regular distributions of food possible. In addition to its regular work serving approximately 2,000 individuals each year, the food bank distributes nearly 700 Thanksgiving and holiday meals, making the holidays a little brighter for these struggling households. You can see the list of currently needed food items on the food bank’s website, scfoodbank.org. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, which runs an office in Bellefonte along with offices in other counties in its service area, helps individuals and families who are facing unexpected financial crises, like loss of income or devastat37

ing medical diagnoses. Catholic Charities provides Emergency Financial Assistance to these households that are struggling to pay their rent, or are forced to choose between paying their utility bills and buying food or life-saving medication on their temporary limited incomes. Particularly during winter and inclement weather, the elderly are often unable to leave their homes, and can face all the issues that come with isolation, such as food insecurity and a lack of basic necessities. Meals on Wheels provides aging community members with vital assistance, delivering nutritious meals straight to seniors’ homes, allowing them to live alone and independently for longer, without the fear of going hungry or being without human contact for days at a time.

Ensure a Bright Future for Our Children We all know a local graduate that’s gone on to accomplish great things, regardless of their field. By investing in education, you’re giving Happy Valley’s future generations the tools to succeed later in life. Organizations like the State College Area School District Education Foundation use donor gifts to provide extra opportunities to students, all with the goal of helping each one reach their highest potential and realize their dreams. The Schlow Centre Region Library offers educational resources to curious minds in every stage of life. Children are taught a lifelong love for reading, and adults are given valuable tools needed for career and personal development. The entire community is offered a place to meet, socialize and learn together — and all without added costs. Donations of any size are appreciated, but volunteers are always needed, as are donations of gently-used materials.

Beyond providing our children with world-class educational resources, we would not be properly looking out for their futures without also preserving the environment. Don’t think you have to change the entire world all at once, though. Start small and start local. The Mount Nittany Conservancy is dedicated to the preservation of 800 acres of green space in Centre County, with more than eight miles of trails around our beloved Mount Nittany. It’s a landmark that fills every local’s heart with pride – make sure it sticks around for generations to come, just as beautiful as it is today.

Keep Our Neighborhoods Safe Volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line on a regular basis to make sure we are kept. Financial support ensures that local allvolunteer fire companies Logan Fire Company No. 1, Alpha Fire and Howard Fire Company can continue to operate with the correct equipment and training. Even if you never need a their services (which we hope you don't!), the presence of a volunteer fire department in your community keeps your taxes lower by reducing the need for tax-funded fire departments.

Keep Happy Valley, Happy Happy Valley isn’t happy just by chance. Our happiness doesn’t rely on the great football team or the fantastic local businesses. It’s the community, and our collective spirit of resilience, love, compassion and charity. Spread the Happy Valley spirit and pay it forward. Your gifts will change lives, and preserve all the wonderful things we love about Happy Valley. We live here, too! Find out more about community, paying it forward and having fun in HappyValley.com at HappyValley.com/live. 38
