Winter 2016 Fun Guide

Letter from the Editor

If this autumn had to be defined in one word, I would pick roar. It’s our word, after all, and so aptly describes the way our team defied predictions, ripped through rankings and brought us to our feet in unmitigated joy. Our mountains roared with color, turning this place into a multicolored wonderland. The buzz of shows, and good food and beer tours and alumni getting together again brought a roar of life to Beaver and College and all those streets in between. It’s almost winter, as any parent with a kid counting down til Christmas will tell you, but never fear. There is another season just waiting to be experienced and enjoyed, Happy Valley style. Winter Sports. Pegula Arena turns our hometown to Hockey Valley in wintertime as host of Division 1 men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. Watch for the men’s basketball team, welcoming what is widely considered the program’s best class at Penn State, and the Lady Lions coming in the paint with some top scorers. And you need to get your tickets while you can so you can witness the wrestling team make us proud. Read more on page 12. Plus, you can get out of the spectator’s seat and take on some winter sports yourself with a full roster of skiing, tubing and intramural competition at Tussey Mountain! Gifts. There are some Penn State fans on your list, and we have some ideas on what to buy! From deals on gift cards to wine gifts you can’t find anywhere else… check out page 14. Holiday Fun. To put it in a nutshell, we have you covered this holiday season. From tasting trails to the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Celebration to the Lemont German Christmas Market… it’s pretty perfect. In fact, the only thing that could make it much better would be some snow on Mount Nittany. It’s winter in the best place to live, work and play—read on! There’s No Place Like Happy Valley  for the Holidays Best of the Season’s Shopping, Celebrating, and Santa Greeting By Blake Burfield For the happiest season of all, what better place could there be for holiday fun than somewhere with “Happy” right in its name? Hol‑ iday festivals, seasonal concerts, treats, sightseeing… There are so many ways to celebrate in Happy Valley this holiday season. Here’s a preview of our favorite holiday events to add to your calendar.

Buy Unique Gifts Happy Valley has you covered for all your gift giving this year.

Nittany Middle School December 3 (wintercraftmarket. com), the Holiday Art & Ornament Sale at Penn State’s Palmer Museum of Art December 3 (palmermuseum.psu.edu) or the Stocking Stuffer Sale December 2‑3 for antiques, fine art and crafts (centrehistory.org).

See Santa Santa is making several trips to Happy Valley this year, so it’s easy to make sure the kids don’t miss out on seeing the big man himself at least once. You can treat them to Breakfast with Santa on December 3 and 10 at the Nittany Lion Inn. Enjoy a delicious start to your day, and take home a complimentary photo with the star guest, Santa (nittanylioninn.psu.edu). Head to the Bellefonte Court House on November 26 for the annual Santa Arrival (visitbellefonte.com), or venture into Lincoln Caverns to see Santa in the Cave December 10‑11 (lincolncaverns.com). During the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas, you can stop in and see Santa at Pizza Mia! on North Spring Street. On December 9th and 10th from 1‑3 p.m. there will be face painting and gifts for the kids. And, if you order a pizza from December 10‑23 during

the hours of 5‑8 p.m., Santa and one of his elves will deliver your order (wearepizzamia.com)!

Celebrate the Season There’s a holiday festival in every corner of Happy Valley. Enjoy music, food and drink, local vendors and good spirits at the 7th Annual Christmas in Lemont German‑style festival December 2‑3 (lemontvillage.org). At the Boalsburg Hometown Christmas festival December 2‑3, choose from a huge array of activities, including breakfast with Santa, carriage rides, caroling, tree decorating, Christmas crafts, and of course, tons of merchants and food. At the 34th Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas December 9‑11, you can enjoy A Christmas Carol, arts and crafts, food, tours and much more (bellefontevictorianchristmas. com). And don’t miss out on First Night, everyone’s favorite New Year’s Eve celebration that takes place in downtown State College (firstnightstatecollege.com).

Take in the Sights Sometimes, the best parts of the holiday season are the simple things. On November 17, see the lighting of the magnificent

Allen Street Christmas tree at the annual Downtown Tree Lighting, where holiday cheer is spread and hot chocolate, cookies and carols are shared (downtownstatecollege.com). The Arboretum Winter Celebration on December 9 offers a beautiful view of lighted tree displays throughout the gardens (arboretum.psu.edu). Or check out the Holiday Home Tour, which takes you through the beautifully decorated homes of State College’s historic West College Heights on December 4 (parkforestpreschool.org).

Tasty Treats It wouldn’t be the holidays without festive food and drink events. For the wine lovers: the Heartland Christmas Wine Trail is a delicious wine tasting journey through Central PA’s great wineries, including our hometown favorites Mount. Nittany Winery, Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery and Seven Mountains Wine Cellars. You’ll also receive a cookie cutter and favorite recipe from each winery, and a grapevine wreath to hold them all. Tickets are good for any or all of the weekends of November 19‑20, November 26‑27, and December 3‑4 (pawinetrail.com). For other treats: reserve a spot at the Christmas Tea and Candlelight Tour December 4 at Boalsburg’s Boal Mansion for a special high tea with incredible food (boalmuseum.com). Or, take the family for some classic Gingerbread House Making at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center December 10 (crpr.org).

Festive Entertainment In the arts and entertainment department, there are plenty of seasonal shows to enjoy. Home Free: A Country Christmas brings holiday favorites with a country spin to the State Theatre November 13 (thestatetheatre.org). Kenny Rogers makes a stop at Eisenhower Auditorium December 17 for his Kenny Rogers Christmas & Hits Tour, which will feature both his long list of hits and Christmas classics (cpa.psu.edu). It’s also the beloved singer’s final farewell tour. And, it’s the perfect time to see the holiday favorite The Nutcracker performed at the State Theatre December 16‑18 (thestatetheatre.org).

Stay Active There are fun ways to stay active in Happy Valley even during the colder months. Get your November fix with the Boalsburg Turkey Trot on November 26 (turkeytrot.elipzer.com), then brave up for the Polar Bear Plunge at Black Moshannon State Park December 14 (ymcaocc.org), and start the New Year off right with the Resolution Run 5K in Downtown State College on New Year’s Eve (firstnightstatecollege.com). Each of these events benefits a great charity, so the season for giving is the perfect time to participate.

Winter Sports Heat Up in Happy Valley By David Abruzzese

Penn State is synonymous with football, but sadly there’s only so many games left to be played. But rest assured, there’s still plenty to experience and see once Beaver Stadium locks its gates until the spring.

Basketball On the hardwood, Penn State basketball heads into the 2016‑17 season carrying some high expectations after signing one of the best recruiting classes in the country. The Lions, who tradition‑ ally struggle to attract top talent to Happy Valley, out‑recruited notable programs like Michigan, Baylor, and Oklahoma—and finished 18 spots ahead of 2016 national champion Villanova on 247sports’ rankings. Finishing a lackluster 16‑16, head coach Pat 12

Chambers expects his team to benefit from an uncharacteristi‑ cally loaded non‑conference schedule that includes meetings with Georgia Tech, Pitt, and No. 1 Duke. But the vibe surrounding this team feels different, and maybe because the team’s makeup is completely different. This year’s team starts with three key freshmen: Tony Carr, Lamar Stevens, and Nazeer Bostick. All three hail from Roman Catholic high school in Philadelphia, and all three figure to revolutionize a team in need of a talent upgrade. Stevens, the largest of the trio, figures to act as the swing man given his lanky frame and tremendous athleticism. He’ll be Photo by Craig Houtz complemented

nicely by the innate shooting ability of the 6‑foot‑4 Bostick, who figures to make an impact coming off the bench this year for the Lions. But the true star of the class is worth the price of admission. Tony Carr, the top point guard in the state of Pennsylvania, spurned programs like Arizona State, Florida State, Indiana, and Georgetown to join his high school teammates in Happy Valley. He’s expected to take the reins as a freshman and partner with another former Roman Catholic standout in Shep Garner to give the Lions a sense of hope—one that could usher in an entirely new era for Penn State basketball.

Ice Hockey

Not a basketball fan? Not to worry! There are plenty of other fun winter sports in‑season you can follow! Penn State men’s hockey is off to a record start with just one loss to seven victories. Ranked No. 14 in the nation, the Nittany Lions have beaten some of the best teams Division I has to offer—including then‑No. 3 Notre Dame.

are two senior leaders Sanderson needs to count on if his team is to return to championship glory. There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere produced a sold out match at Rec Hall, and the Lions bring the fireworks each and every time they hit the mat.

Wrestling

Volleyball

Cael Sanderson’s wrestling squad is looking to repeat after a domi‑ nant 2015‑16 campaign. Seniors Brian Brill and Jimmy Gulibon

Also, thankfully, we still have plenty of women’s volleyball action to be had before the season wraps up in mid‑December. The Lions look to reverse course from last season’s unprecedented early exit from the NCAA Tournament and embark on another title run. Football might be coming to a close sooner than we think, but there’s always plenty going on in Happy Valley!

Give the Gift of Happy Valley this Holiday Season Iconic Penn State Gear and Goods Can be Shipped to Anyone on Your Gift List

Gifting your Penn Stater friends and family with awesome local items is a surefire way to make them feel super happy and at home. Especially if they can’t be in Happy Valley this holiday season; just bring Happy Valley to them! Best of all, there are plenty of gifts that you don’t even need to leave your couch to buy. Here’s our guide to the best Happy Valley gifts you can order from anywhere and send anywhere. (Plus, a rundown of the best local gifts to buy the traditional way). 14

Gift Cards Galore We all know that sometimes, the most foolproof way to please someone with a gift is to let them choose it themselves. Gift cards are the tried and true way to do that, and you can order them from some of Happy Valley’s favorite local joints right online! Gigi’s Southern Table (gigisdining.com), Otto’s (ottos.com), and Mad Mex (madmex.com) are a few local favorites that sell gift cards on their websites. Better yet, you can purchase “universal” gift cards online for two of State College’s restaurant families. A Dante’s (dantesinc. com) gift card can be used at any of these Dante’s locations: The Deli, Liberty Craft House, Inferno, Mario’s, Hi Way Pizza, The Saloon, Bar Bleu, and The Hopshop. A gift card from Hotel State College Company (hotelstatecollege.com) is good at The Corner Room, the Allen Street Grill, Bill Pickle’s Tap Room, and Zeno’s. These cards are guaranteed hits.

Sport Penn State Gear Anywhere Sure, you can always buy college team gear from some of the big box stores. But every Penn Stater knows that authentic,

local Penn State garb is the best. Luckily, some of the best Penn State stores in State College have online catalogues and ship anywhere. Check out the sites for stores like Student Book Store (thestudentbookstore.com), Family Clothesline (pennstateclothes.com), the Penn State Bookstore (psu. bncollege.com) and Lion’s Pride (lions‑pride.com) to get Penn State clothing, accessories, home goods, souvenirs, and more. You can even find adorable holiday‑themed Penn State gifts on these sites, like ornaments, Christmas sweaters, and holiday decor.

Treat Them to Dessert Happy Valley has plenty to satisfy a holiday sweet tooth. And as much as the person on your list would love to stop in to their favorite Happy Valley place for their favorite treat, it’s just as easy to bring it right to them. Believe it or not, Berkey Creamery (creamery.psu.edu) ships its products to all 48 continental states—yes, even ice cream! Go for one of the classics like Peachy Paterno or Keeny Beany Chocolate, or a seasonal flavor like Egg Nog. (And be sure to order some Grilled Stickies to go with it, since The Creamery sells those too!). For delectable chocolate gifts, you can order from Gardner’s Candies (gardnerscandies.com)—everyone’s local favorite based in Tyrone—or Chocolates by Leopold (chocolatesbyleopold.net)—a gourmet chocolate outlet in Boalsburg that’s getting rave reviews.

in mid‑November. The case includes 12 different bottles of hand‑selected wines; either give one a day to a special someone or split the case between people on your list. (And maybe keep some extra for yourself!) For a smaller option, simply order a wintry flavor like “Happy Valley Spice” from Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery (thehappyvalleywinery.com), “Spiced Apple” from Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery (mtnittanywinery.com), or “Polar Vortex” from Seven Mountains. Any of these seasonally spiced blends will warm someone on your gift list right up. Buy some tickets to the Heartland Christmas Wine Trail (pawinetrail.org) so your friends and family can get a taste of not just one, but all of Happy Valley’s wineries.

Just Go the Traditional Way In the end, sometimes you just want to buy your gifts the classic way: in person. If that’s the case, don’t worry—all of our categories still hold true. • Stop into pretty much any local favorite restaurant or store to grab a gift card that someone will really thank you for. • Head to College and Beaver Avenues to browse through the many Penn State gear outlets. • Customize a holiday gift basket of delicious homemade sweets at Dolce Vita Desserts in Lemont. • Buy some tickets to the Heartland Christmas Wine Trail (pawinetrail.org) so your friends and family can get a taste of not just one, but all of Happy Valley’s wineries.

Share the Best Local Wines Buying for a wine lover? Mario’s has won Wine Spectator Awards and Wine Enthusiast Awards for seven years running and has a selection of over 550 wines available to ship as gifts—many of which you can’t find anywhere else in the area. Order a bottle, case, or gift basket with other Mario’s goodies like their flagship vodka sauce. You can order at dantesinc.myshopify.com. You can also delight the wine lovers on your list with fun seasonal items from our local wineries. Seven Mountains Wine Cellars (sevenmountainswinecellars.com) is again offering its popular “12 Days of Christmas” wine cases beginning

It’s a great deal for the whole family: kids from 6‑12 can eat for half price, and children 5 and under eat for free! At Legends at The Penn Stater, you can join a rewards program that you’ll actually use. With the Burgers and Brews

Winter 2016 Fun Guide

Outdoor Fun When Cold Weather Strikes Tussey Mountain is Central PA’s Winter Wonderland By Jeff Cavanaugh The forecast for Winter 2017 is colder and snowier than last year, and that means one thing here in Happy Valley: Long Live Tussey Mountain. Tussey has seven different trails for skiers of all experience levels. From the Little Bear beginner’s slope to the most difficult slopes on the mountain—the Upper Tuscarora and Upper Shamokin—skiing and snowboarding conditions are always impeccable. And if you’re not looking for just smooth, fast skiing, there are two Terrain Parks off of the Utah trail and the Shamokin trail that have boxes, rails, pipes, and a number of assorted jumps. It’s also the best snow tubing around for everyone ages 4 and up… with a perk. Remember being a kid and all the excitement of sleigh riding, but dreading the walk back to the top of the hill? Here, you can zip down a hill with a beautiful view and then get pulled back up to the top by one of the handle‑tow lifts. This offseason, Tussey Mountain did a number of upgrades to the snow tube park including a regrade of the hill and expanding the size of the park to add more lanes for tubers. Additionally, they installed an artificial surface for the lift line at the snow tube that will make the trip from the bottom to the top much more pleasant. Just starting out? In January, Tussey will begin their youth ski and snowboard program. This two‑hour program is offered either on Saturdays or Sundays and is intended to improve the skiing or snowboarding skills for kids aged 6‑12. This is a non‑competitive program for all levels and it is a great opportunity for either first timers or frequent

skiers and riders to improve their skills and have fun making friends on the slopes. The cost for the program is $155 for season pass holders and $245 for everyone else; rental equipment for the program costs an additional $70. And it is not just children and students that have opportuni‑ ties to learn and improve their skiing skills. Tussey Mountain also offers a one‑of‑a‑kind Young at Heart Program on Tuesdays for skiers over 50 years of age. Participants in the Young at Heart Program receive 50% off their lift ticket and a specially discount‑ ed 1.5‑hour lesson! Rental equipment is also available with this lesson for half off. Gift certificates to Tussey Mountain can be purchased in any amount and never expire—and they can be used any time or dur‑ ing any season at the year‑round destination. And from now until December 24, $200 of Tussey Money can be purchased for only $159! Get your holiday shopping done early by visiting Tussey Mountain! If the outdoors and all of the awesome skiing and snowboard‑ ing available at Tussey Mountain still don’t get your attention, Edges Pub, located in the Lodge at Tussey Mountain, is one of Happy Valley’s best kept secrets. At Edges Pub, you will find delicious food every night with live music and entertainment on weekends—but only during the winter season! Edges Pub is the perfect winter hangout and the only place you’ll want to have a post‑skiing beer or maybe an Irish coffee to warm up. Tussey Mountain slopes and lifts are open to skiers and snow‑ boarders, carrying either a season pass or daily ticket. In peak sea‑ son, chair lifts operate noon until 10 p.m. Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and holidays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Tussey Mountain is typically open for skiing, boarding and tubing from December through middle to late March.

Nittany Lions Surpass Expectations in Breakout Season By John Patishnock

Most fans would have been thrilled if you had said in September that Penn State would win eight games this season. But by late October, when the Nittany Lions completed an epic comeback victory against No. 2 Ohio State, eight wins seemed low. It was that kind of season for Penn State. The Nittany Lions surpassed all (external) expectations, earned a national ranking for the first time since the 2011 season, and beat a Top‑5 opponent for the first time since 1999. The reason for prefacing expectations in the previous paragraph was perhaps the Lions expected this all along. For 18

example, here’s what Saquon Barkley said at practice the week after the Lions upended the Buckeyes: “We didn’t really see it as an upset or coming in as underdogs. It’s really only an upset if you don’t truly believe that you can win the game, and everyone in that locker room believed that we were capable of winning that game. So we didn’t see it as an upset, we just took it as another game.”

“We didn’t really see it as an upset or coming in as underdogs. It’s really only an upset if you don’t truly believe that you can win the game, and everyone in that locker room believed that we were capable of winning that game." Best Game, Part I: OK, this is obvious. Whether you were at Beaver Stadium, watching with friends, or tailgating outside (or all of the above), you’ll always remember where you were when Penn State upended No. 2 Ohio State on Oct. 22.

Winter 2016 Fun Guide

Best Game, Part II: The second nighttime game against Iowa was certainly memorable—if only because Saturday nights at Beaver Stadium tend to be special—though the overtime win against Minnesota not only kicked off an incredible postgame celebration that included fans embracing the players at the back of the north end zone, it also likely saved Penn State’s season. At that point, the Lions were 2‑2 and still reeling from the blowout loss at Michigan. But that victory started a perfect October that sent Penn State into the national rankings. After the Ohio State victory, a beat writer asked defensive end Garrett Sickels where Penn State would be if the Minnesota game had gone the other way. “To be honest, I don’t even think like that,” Sickels said. “I just think forward to the next game. Can’t control anything like that, and you can’t dwell on things like that. You just have to move forward.” It was a good question, and great insight into how the players think. Though from a fan’s perspective, there’s little doubt that game turned the Lions’ season around. Memorable Quote: Saquon Barkley gets it. Specifically, gets how special it is to play at Beaver Stadium. After the Lions finished a convincing Homecoming victory over Maryland, here’s what the star running back said about the fan support that Penn State receives at home: “The crowd energy is amazing. You feed off of it, and it makes you feel like you can do anything.” Saquon has proved that time and again during his still‑young career.

Winter 2016 Fun Guide

Best Pick: Taking Penn State to win easily over Maryland. The Terrapins have managed to convince the conference (and sometimes the country) that they’re more competitive than they actually are. Typically playing a soft non‑conference schedule— they played Howard, Florida International, and Central Florida this season —Maryland racks up easy wins before the traditional Big Ten powers push them back down the standings. And on a personal note, after seeing how some of their fans behaved during last year’s game in Baltimore, the Terrapins can’t lose often enough.

“The crowd energy is amazing. You feed off of it, and it makes you feel like you can do anything.” Worst Pick: Choosing Penn State (+16) to cover against Michi‑ gan. As soon as I made this pick, I knew I should’ve gone the other way. Nothing against the Lions, they just needed time to come together this season. They obviously did that in October, completing a perfect 4‑0 month that included that iconic upset of No. 2 Ohio State. But in September, on the road against a Top‑5 team, few programs could keep up with the Wolverines.

19

Nittany Lions Surpass Expectations… Continued from 19 Keep An Eye On: The next time Penn State plays at home, check out—if the television cameras cut to this angle—James Franklin and the team as they teeter on the edge of the tunnel before run‑ ning onto the field. It’s a cool moment, as Franklin balances firing up the team while at the same time, momentarily keeping them contained in the tunnel. Guys are amped, as is Franklin, and there’s usually some shoving going on as the Lions know they’re a few seconds away from running onto the field. I first noticed this at Heinz Field against Pitt. The sequence has since repeated itself for nearly every home game.

Penn State took a 21‑10 halftime lead en route to a 34‑27 vic‑ tory against the Owls. The best part for fans is that the season is far from over. Now that Penn State is bowl eligible, you can cheer on the Lions into the new year. Stay tuned to HappyValley.com for information on Penn State's bowl game destination, fun, and travel once informa‑ tion is available.

Here’s what Franklin said about that after the win against Temple: “We want to start faster. I didn’t stay up last night think‑ ing about, ‘I’m going to shove them and push them to start fast,’ it’s just what I did. I’m trying to have some fun with them, trying to loosen them up. I thought we did start out better, we had some turnovers that slowed us down later in the game and put our defense in tough spots, but I do think we started better.”

Not Your Average College Student’s Drinking Destination Where to Find the Best Craft Beers, Top‑Notch Wines, and Grown‑Up Cocktails in Downtown State College By Jeff Cavanaugh It is no secret that whether you are a cash‑strapped Penn State student or an alum looking to relive your college days, you can always find $2 PBR cans at the Phyrst, or a $5 Monkey Boy at The Saloon or the legendary “Case of Rocks” at the Rathskeller. But with a growing emphasis on craft beers and classic cocktails throughout Happy Valley, downtown State College has become more than just your typical shot and cheap beer college town. Across Central Pennsylvania, new microbreweries and wineries continue to open and existing operations continue to expand. But if 22

you don’t want to set aside an entire day to visit each different win‑ ery or brewery in the area, head to downtown State College where you can find the best of everything without having to move your car. Here is a look at some of the best bars and restaurants in Happy Valley where you can try regional craft beers, local wines and unique cocktails:

The Dining Room at the Nittany Lion Inn For wine lovers, there is certainly no better destination downtown than The Dining Room at the Nittany Lion Inn. The Dining Room is one of the top destinations for fine dining in State College, and is perfect for special occasions or any time you may be in the mood for a really good glass of wine. In addition to their regular menu, their one‑of‑a‑kind educational wine pairing dinners, Tastes of the World, are each themed to a specific wine region and give guests an opportunity to learn about the cuisine and wines of these regions while they wine and dine. 200 W. some beer, wine, and spirits selection and the Deli Restaurant & Z Bar become a can’t‑miss spot. The Z Bar has 57 drafts, a cask‑conditioned “real ale” hand‑pump beer engine, and bottle list featuring upwards of 150 different beers. And if you’re looking for a nice wine, the Z Bar rotates a stock of over 30 respected wine selections by either the bottle or glass. The Deli Restaurant & Z Bar just finished booking and finalizing their line‑up for the 2017 Meet the Brewery series, which typically runs from January through April. This is the longest running craft beer series around and gives patrons a look behind the curtain of how their favorite local and regional beers are brewed. Liberty Craft House With over 40 taps and a delicious menu, the Liberty Craft House is one of the best and newest destinations in downtown State College for dinner and a beer. Beer lovers can expect to see a great rotation of Pennsylvania craft brews from breweries like Tröegs, Victory, and Yards. Liberty Craft House is always hosting special events and partnering with different breweries to offer some very limited run brews and different special events. Perhaps the best holiday beer event in Happy Valley will be held on Thursday, December 1 as Liberty Craft House teams up with Hershey’s own Tröegs Independent Brewing to throw The Most Wonderful Beer of the Year event. The Dining Room at The Nittany Lion Inn Wins Wine Spectator ‘Best Of ’ Award of Excellence Award Marks Highest Wine Recognition the Inn has Ever Received

For the first time, The Dining Room at The Nittany Lion Inn has received Wine Spectator magazine’s 2016 “Best of ” Award of Excellence—the highest wine list award achieved in the history of the Inn. They have been a Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence” winner every year since 2002, but this is the first year that its extensive wine list has achieved “Best of ” status. The Dining Room joins an exclusive group of dining establishments whose wine lists have earned this honor. Only 18 restaurants in Pennsylvania—and no other establishments in State College—hold the “Best of ” designation. “We are very excited about this award,” said Sean Caviston, restaurant operations manager and wine director at The Nittany Lion Inn. “We truly have one of the best wine lists in the state.” Over the past several years Caviston has devoted much time and energy into improving the level and scope of of‑ ferings on The Dining Room’s wine list, as well as develop‑ ing wine education opportunities for guests. One of these opportunities is the popular “Tastes of the World: A Wine Dinner Series,” a personalized culinary experience that gives guests the opportunity to learn about the cuisine and wines of different regions of the world as they wine and dine. Recent wine dinners have introduced guests to wine regions in Portugal, France’s Rhone Valley, and South Africa. “Through these wine dinners, we want our guests, whether they have a vast or a limited knowledge of wine, to gain information that will make buying, serving, sharing, and drinking wine more enjoyable,” Caviston said. According to the Wine Spectator website, “Best of ” awards are given to wine lists that “display excellent breadth across multiple winegrowing regions and/or significant vertical depth of top producers, along with superior presentation. Typically offering 350 or more selections, these restaurants are destinations for serious wine lovers, showing a deep commitment to wine, both in the cellar and through their service team.” 23

Eating Local: From‑Scratch Flavors Fuel Dantes’ Menu Favorites

A Behind‑the‑Scenes Look at Signature Goods from Mario’s, The Deli, Hi Way Pizza and More “We don’t make our ketchup and mustard,” JP Mills, Director at Dante’s Restaurants and Nightlife says, “but we make just about everything else.” It’s no secret that Dante’s Restaurants and Nightlife (which includes The Deli, Hi Way Pizza, Liberty Craft House, Mario’s and more) has been making their food ‘local’ long before it was cool, but the sheer volume and organization of the restaurants’ symbiotic relationships is staggering. It goes beyond working with local producers… they ARE the local producer. Liberty Craft House

Going on now at The Deli: Beulah’s Smokehouse celebrates authentic Kansas City Barbecue that focuses on locally sourced pork and beef that are butchered and smoked low and slow in‑house using hickory wood. Large plates, small plates, sandwiches and more. Enjoy a classic cocktail or bourbon neat with a featured specialty drink menu created to perfectly pair with their authentic Kansas City style smoked meats! December: Winter means comfort food, and The Deli brings it in spades with riffs on classic holiday foods. Their Holiday Traditions Food Festival features dishes that compliment the most wonderful time of the year. And you don't want to miss Mario's Traditional Italian Christmas Eve Dinner. (Reservations strongly suggested). January ’til Spring: Comfort Food & Soup Festival features dishes that stick to your ribs and warm your soul. There will be approximately 20 fresh soups available each day along with cold weather favorites such as Mom’s Meatloaf.

The day starts at 11 p.m. when orders are placed for the food for the next day. Corporate bakers and pastry chefs who work in their bakery and commissary create countless breads, dough, and desserts from scratch. You can find these fresh‑baked goods in each of their restaurants, and, most recently, at Rothrock Coffee on South Atherton Street. Each restaurant has a unique brand and strength and contributes its signature goods. For instance, you can find Mario’s Vodka Sauce at the Deli. Wings are smoked at Bar Bleu downtown, and sauces and salad dressings are made from scratch at another. It’s all from scratch, all from Andy Zangrilli’s recipes, and all made to order to ensure that every dish is as fresh and great as it can be. The foods are distributed to each restaurant—their signature dishes, sauces, and specials—and another day begins. There are cult favorites at each restaurant (the famous Mario’s Vodka Sauce, Hi Way Pizza’s ‘’red stuffed,’ The Deli’s Reuben), but their seasonal menus give you a chance to see their inven‑ tive freshness in new great dishes. Keep your eye on The Deli in particular—there are some changes afoot and you will love them. The all time favorites are staying, but look for new and creative dishes to join the menu in 2017.

Crab Fries, The Field Burger and Tap When you order fries at The Field, you have to specify whether you want a single serving or a ‘table’ of them. What’s a table, you ask? It means that they put wax paper on your table and pour out a bucket of perfectly golden hand‑cut fries in front of you. And then, if you had the incredibly good fortune of ordering the crab fries, the whole thing is doused with a carafe of molten white cheddar and crab meat. Full disclosure: I have gone with a few of my most well‑behaved friends and we were scraping the leftover cheese off the wax paper with spoons. It’s a kind of leave‑your‑dignity‑at‑the‑door appetizer that will make it to the top of your list the next time you are in town. (But save room for one of those burgers… and then the hand‑spun Creamery milkshake—which you can also order with booze added.) toftrees.com/restaurant

World Famous Holiday Stromboli, Pizza Mia! Pizza Mia! has the perfect holiday/pizza mashup: the World Famous Holiday Stromboli. They take their famous pizza dough and stuff it full of cheese, turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes and then serve with gravy, corn and cranberry sauce. It’s only served this time of year, and people are raving about it on facebook. You can stop by either their Bellefonte location (106 N. Spring St.) or their State College location (114 Hetzel St.), or get it delivered to you. WeArePizzaMia.com.

Traditional Gyro, The Greek This is not the kind of gyro you buy at a baseball game with a mealy pita and dried out meat. This is a chewy and light homemade pita filled with tender pork, tomatoes, and fries hidden inside (just because they knew you would love it), seasoned with tangy perfect tzatziki. When they say it’s authentic, they mean it.

New and Notable

Check Out These Recently‑Opened Hot Spots in Happy Valley By Holly Swanson There’s never been a better time to establish yourself in Happy Valley, whether that means buying a year‑round home, starting a new business, or committing to visit several times a year. As our local population grows, so, too, do small businesses. Here’s a sampling of a few of our favorite new restaurants and corporations that are happy to greet new customers.

The Melt Shack After his success with Underground Burger & Crepe and Pita Cabana, owner Hitham Hiyajneh decided to fill State College’s need for a good grilled cheese sandwich by opening The Melt Shack. Tucked into the corner of East Calder Way and McAllister Alley, this new restaurant has already acquired quite a following considering that it just opened in mid‑September. But, there’s something to be said for comfort food like grilled cheese, especially when it’s done right and comes with a side of tomato bisque, perfect for dipping. But The Melt Shack doesn’t stop at the traditional offering of grilled white bread with Ameri‑ can cheese slapped in the middle. Instead, their menu includes unique sandwiches like The Sicilian (salami, mozzarella, and tomatoes) and the Bacon Cheddar (obviously, bacon and cheddar, but loaded with both). Most meals come in around $6, making it an affordable lunch or dinner for students and townies. 218 E. Calder Way, State College

Finatics Aquarium & Pet Center Although it’s only been open for a few weeks, Finatics makes it fun to go to the mall again with a variety of fish, birds, and small animals like hamsters and mice. The staff is well‑trained to answer questions and provide advice about your new hermit crab or salt‑water fish and the habitats that they might need. Nittany Mall, State College

Courthouse Crepes After a late September grand opening, Courthouse Crepes has established itself as a local favorite in the Bellefonte area. With more than a dozen crepe flavors and three breads available daily, you’ll be able to satisfy every request in your party, from meat lovers to gluten‑free diners. Fresh made soup, local coffee from Cafe Lemont, and Meyer Dairy ice cream make this a destina‑ tion restaurant that offers the best products from around Happy 28

Valley. And, unlike some specialty restaurants, Courthouse Crepes is kid‑friendly, with a small library dedicated to their smallest customers. 101 South Allegheny Street, Bellefonte

Black Horse Studio Whether you’ve bought a new home, are remodeling an existing house, or are expanding a business, you’ll want to consult with a local who knows the ins and outs of regional decor. No mat‑ ter what your ultimate goal is, you’ll find a friend in Jodi Myers, founder and artist at Black Horse Studio in Bellefonte. Myers can custom‑design floorcloths, welcome mats, and kitchen acces‑ sories that will complement any style. Black Horse Studio also carries a diverse line of paintings and prints that will be the perfect fit in your Central Pennsylvania home. But if you’re outside the area, most items can be shipped, starting at $13. 118 North Allegheny Street, Bellefonte

Champs Sports Grill The downtown location for Champs Sports Grill reopens this month. The newly remodeled restaurant includes tiered seating surrounding a large bar area. Champs has at least 50 beers on tap. 139 South Allen St., State College

Not Just for College Students

Happy Valley is a Destination for Retirees and the Young at Heart By Holly Swanson Happy Valley is becoming well known as the perfect place to retire. But when the older population comes to town, don’t expect them to slow down. Shows, museums, sporting events, and outdoor activities offer plenty of options to keep you on your toes. While there’s no reason that retirees can’t enjoy the main attractions in the area—award‑winning golf courses at Toftrees and Penn State, nature centers like Shaver’s Creek, and Spikes’ baseball, there are some great places and activities in Happy Valley that are geared especially for seniors.

Centre Region Active Adult Center After moving to a larger location within the mall and changing its name to reflect the “active” part of the experience, the former Centre Region Senior Center has many of the daily activities you expect, like bridge lessons, Rummikub games, and line dancing. But the Center also sponsors weekly local hiking trips, computer education classes, and bus trips to New York City. Formerly at a downtown State College location, the Centre made the move to Nittany Mall just a year ago, doubling its square footage. The easier access and location central to neighboring towns doubled the Centre’s membership. This increased demand is an indication of the growing retiree population throughout the region. Nittany Mall, State College

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Central Pennsylvania residents who want to spend their retirement increasing their knowledge about, well, just about anything, can take semester‑length or one‑day courses taught by Penn State professors and local experts. A sampling of recent courses include Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Ethics in Everyday Life, Climate Change, and 3D Print‑ ing. OLLI also has nine social and special interest groups and they offer both regional and international travel opportunities. And, if you have expertise in a particular area and you’d like to share your knowledge with other retirees, you can volunteer to be a program leader. Throughout Centre County

This Holiday Season, Give a Gift that Could Change a Life By Jessica Hallman

As the old saying goes, “one person can’t change the whole world, but you can change the world for one person.” With hundreds of non‑profit organizations in Centre County, there is great need for support to help the less fortunate in our community. Consider changing the world for someone this year by giv‑ ing back to the community. Whether you help feed the hungry, shelter an animal, preserve a local landmark, or invest in a child’s future, your gift makes a big impact for someone who needs it in Happy Valley. Here are a few ideas to give back locally this holiday season.

Help a Neighbor Who is Struggling One in six people in America go hungry, including right here 32

in Centre County. The State College Food Bank exists to help families overcome food insecurity through regular distributions of nutritious food. Last year, thanks to volunteer support and finan‑ cial contributions from the community, the Food Bank helped to feed nearly 2,000 local individuals. “You can play a life‑changing role in helping a local household put food on the table,” said Carol Pioli, Executive Director of the State College Food Bank. “Every gift, no matter the size, helps us combat hunger in Centre County.” Another local charity that changes lives is the Bellefonte office of Catholic Charities. While their name may imply that there are faith‑based requirements to receive assistance, the charity provides help and hope to people in need regardless of their religious background. They offer emergency financial assistance to indi‑ viduals and families who don’t qualify for government assistance programs, but need help to avoid eviction, keep their lights on, or purchase lifesaving medication due to unexpected financial crises.

Protect and Serve Our Communities The protection that volunteer firefighters provide can be compared to those of insurance: you hope you never have to use it, but you’ll be glad you have it if you need it. Community fire departments like Logan Fire Company No. 1 and Howard Fire

Winter 2016 Fun Guide

Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy in Boalsburg offers high school students an educational experience centered on the pillars of faith, scholarship, leadership, and service—positioning them for success in college and in their careers. Since the school opened in 2011, they’ve yielded a 100% college acceptance rate among graduates. “We empower young men and women, both Catholic and non‑Catholic, to pursue rigorous academic studies within a faith‑based environment,” said Chris Chirieleison, principal at Saint Joe’s. “Small class sizes and exceptional teachers facilitate meaningful enrichment, while the Gospel values of integrity, respect, service, and justice inform our academic endeavors and social interactions.” Company operate solely on volunteer manpower—meaning your neighbors put their lives on the line to keep you and your family safe. And, as volunteers, they are never paid a dime. These local volunteer fire departments are often the first line of defense in an emergency situation, enabling highly‑trained emergency rescue personnel to reach you quickly when seconds count. They rely heavily on financial support from the community to maintain equipment and apparatus, and to ensure each volunteer has necessary training. An added bonus of volunteer fire departments is that they help keep taxes lower for area residents, by reducing the need for more paid staff fire departments which are funded by tax dollars. “While there are many great and deserving organizations out there looking for donations, none of them impact you, your fam‑ ily, and your community as much as having a fully trained and equipped emergency service provider close to home,” said Mark Ott, volunteer for Howard Fire Company.

No matter where your heart lies, there are numerous organizations worthy of your support this holiday season. Thank you for making perhaps the most important gift of all—a gift that could change the course of someone’s life!

Invest in Our Future Generations By making a donation to a local school, you invest in the future of our community and our world. Gifts to public schools—like through the State College Area School District Education Foundation or Bald Eagle Area School District Eagle Ambassadors—help to ensure all students can reach their maximum poten‑ tial by helping to fund critical activities, resources, and opportuni‑ ties that fall outside the districts’ annual operating budgets. “The Foundation exists to raise money to support students within SCASD,” said Paul Olivett, Executive Director of the State College Area School District Education Foundation. “Our goal is to enhance the programs and experiences that make our district great for the students and the community.” Donations to local private schools help to make tuition af‑ fordable for more students. Many families choose private schools for their small class sizes, college‑preparatory curriculum, college acceptance rates, and, in some cases, faith‑centered environment.

Happy Valley By THE numbers Both Penn State and Happy Valley have long been favorites on “best of” lists. And it’s no wonder—somehow we have found the perfect combination of big city fun and small town benefits, with college town energy added in like a shot of adrenaline. Each of us can tick off the things that we think make it the best—football, the seasons, entertainment, the food. But what makes websites like businessinsider.com, Nationalgeographic. com, Money.com and CNN sit up and take notice? Read on!

#1 Recruiter Ranking A Wall Street Journal survey found that Penn State is the number one among recruiters from leading companies, nonprofits and government agencies. Recruiters were asked to identify schools whose bachelor degrees were best trained and educated and best able to succeed once hired.

#2 Smartest City Lumosity ranks State College at number two based on data from 3 million players of its Lumosity games. The data objectively measured real differences in cognitive performance across geographic areas by examining scores from users’ first few sessions playing games across five cognitive areas: memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention and problem solving.

#1 Happiest Small Places in America Citing low stress, low commute and walkability and home owners, Movoto declared that Happy Valley is truly the happiest!

National Geographic: Adventure Town

36

In true wanderlust fashion, National Geographic doesn't bother rank it, but tells just tells you to come spend the weekend. “Ah, to be young and live in a rugged corner of the Alleghenies.”
