From the Editor
In the last few weeks as the weather has (tentatively) begun to thaw, we’ve seen a lot of buzz over Happy Valley in the media. It was featured in Huffington Post on a list of “Most Fitness Friendly Towns,” USA Today ranked it among the 25 best small college towns in the country, and WPSU ran a series exploring the reasons we stay here. We here at HappyValley.com love that kind of stuff. We compile them into lists, feature them on facebook, and really enjoy seeing statistics stack up to prove something we’ve known in our gut all along – this place is the best. From the mountains that frame our happy valley (and give us ample outdoor recreation) to the job opportunities, schools, food and events … it all adds up to something pretty special. Our motto is Live, Work and Play in Happy Valley. And in each fun guide, we help you plan the best possible fun for the season – Play is something we take pretty seriously around here. In this issue, you’ll also find articles that will make the most of Live. It’s Spring!
Fun’s Waiting... Get Out There! By Melissa Bradley Spring just might be the most beautiful season in Happy Valley—well, it’s definitely in the top four. Sure, we’re emerging from a winter that was milder than usual, but it’s still a great pleasure to welcome chirping birds, blooming dogwood and crab apple trees, longer days and outdoor farmers’ markets. Take advantage of the blissful months between crippling cold and insufferable heat with outdoor activities suited for young and old, cautious and gutsy, social butterflies and lone wolves. No matter your style, ample fun awaits, so get out there! In true valley fashion, this one is surrounded by peaks, and spring is prime time to climb. For the traditionalists, begin with the rite of passage Mount Nittany hike. You’ll be in good company. It’s a relatively easy hike suited for the whole family, and customizable to be a quick, brisk climb or a leisurely 8

afternoon loop. Before packing your picnic basket, study up on Mount Nittany history and climbing protocol. Bill’s Hikes has compiled a “Best Hikes in Happy Valley” list to find the loop that suits you best.

If you’ve never paid a visit to Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, now is the perfect time. Recently, bald eagles have been singing shrilly in the Raptor Center, not because they’re bored or hungry for attention, but because they’re nesting—history in the making, and patriotism to boot. The public is invited to check out exhibits, join in on bird walks and enjoy festivals and local music. Right down the road is Shaver’s Creek’s kin, Stone Valley Recreation Area, a natural wonderland. With 29 miles of hiking

trails, ample picnic space and tranquil Lake Perez, serenity is available from dusk to dawn. For those who are more interested in a thrill, check out Vertical Adventures, Stone Valley’s challenge course. There’s nothing else like it in the region. Groups are invited to have a new kind of team building experience, so if you’re looking to bring cooperation and excitement to your crew, check it out! If you’re heading out from State College, stop at the Naked Egg Cafe as you pass through Pine Grove Mills fill up on your favorite breakfast eats and get a jolt courtesy of Standing Stone Coffee Company. Whipple Dam is another great picnic spot, and about as close to the beach as you’ll get in landlocked central PA. A perfect lowkey getaway on a sun soaked afternoon, Whipple Dam combines wooded expanses with open water. It’s also the site for SUP State College—stand up paddleboard yoga. Definitely a far cry from the traditional yoga studio.

Penn’s Cave is another can’t-miss central PA destination. Opt for a guided tour of the only all-water cavern in the nation and take in the limestone formations by boat. Outdoor tours of the Wildlife Park are also available and may afford you a glimpse of mountain lions and timber wolves. Prospector Pete’s Miners Maze is another onsite adventure. Be sure to hit the gift shop on your way out and pan for gemstones and pass a souvenir along to someone who missed out. As an added bonus, the Nittany Antique Machinery Association hosts their shows and auctions
Athletic Affinities From the novice to the seasoned pro, Happy Valley athletes are taking advantage of varied topography and community interest and leaning on each other to strengthen their athletic prowess (and social lives). Nittany Valley Running Club is a well-established group spanning all ages and fitness levels. Their mission is to promote development and competition. Join a leisurely group or train for a race. Tour state game lands on foot. Membership dues are modest and come with perks like a discount to Appalachian Outdoors, which will come in handy for anyone who plans to explore Happy Valley. Gear for hiking, biking, climbing, fishing, camping and more is available on Allen Street. If you prefer to be on wheels, join the State College Cycling Club and amp up your rides with camaraderie this spring. The group meets up for road rides each Tuesday, typically at a local park, and breaks up into groups by level. Starting in the summer, Slow and Steady rides are held each Thursday for beginners. Get involved to network with fellow cyclists and find out which routes are the right fit for you. Make sure to map a ride that takes you past the Spruce Creek Bakery—their “inside out” donuts will give you the boost you need to complete the circuit.

at Penn’s Cave. The 42nd annual Spring Show, a flea market on steroids, will take place the first weekend of June. After spelunking, pay a visit to the Whistle Stop, a Centre Hall treasure that preserves history with railroad décor and serves a mean steak fry.

road from Spring Creek Park, which offers basketball, tennis and beach volleyball courts along with jungle gyms and vast fields for picnics and play. The Millbrook Marsh barn and Spring Creek Education Building hold public programs for children and adults to learn about the ecosystem and history. They host fun, free events for the public like an eco-friendly scavenger hunt on April 23 or Birds and Bagels on April 30, for bird enthusiasts of all ages—no prior birding experience required. Tussey Mountain might be best known for its slopes, but it's got a lot more to offer. Tussey is the place to be for outdoor fun even after the last snow of the season has melted. Go-karts, mini golf, driving range, batting cages and even a skate park—it’s a mecca for couples, families and groups who are tired of the usual routine and seeking a thrill. Check their website frequently to find out when you can expect live music and other events. Finally, for the sports fans who would rather sit back and enjoy from the sidelines, visit Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to watch the State College Spikes, our very own minor league baseball team. The season starts officially in June, but tickets are available now, and a Spikes game is the perfect setting for a fundraiser or kid’s birthday party; it’s never too early to start planning summer fun! Next Stop: Boalsburg Our Favorite Village Eats and Sights By Melissa Bradley For all those who have ever referred to State College as “the middle of nowhere,” I come bearing pleasantly surprising news. State College, home of University Park, is actually the middle of an expansive treasure chest. It’s one gem among many in a region riddled with state parks, picturesque towns and historical villages. No, these pockets of central PA aren’t heavily populated, but if you ask me, that’s half of the appeal. Let’s face it. I’m not a city girl. Sometimes I think the bustle of Beaver Ave might as well be Times Square. And don’t get me started on the stretch of Atherton spanning Park to College Ave. Narrow lanes, frequent traffic lights and reckless jaywalkers leave me angst ridden. Gratefully, there is a reprieve four miles southeast. It’s called Boalsburg, and it’s about as charming and oldtimey as villages come. Boalsburg is a straight shot down 322 from campus. You’ll know you’re headed in the right direction when you pass Meyer Dairy. (If you’ve found a way to actually drive past Meyer Dairy

without stopping in for a cone of chocolate chip brownie dough, let me know.) Meyer sells milk in glass jugs, which is, without contest, the best and freshest around. Also along South Atherton is the Pump Station Café, an adorably repurposed Texaco gas station conveniently equipped with a drive-thru if you’re on your way out of or into town. You’ll probably want to park so you can scope out the quirky décor, get a massive homemade cookie and your preferred caffeinated beverage and take a stroll through Pennsylvania Military Museum grounds. The museum features several outdoor exhibits and is open five days a week for indoor tours. Beginning mid May, the Boalsburg Farmers’ Market is held in the Military Museum parking lot every Tuesday from 2-6 p.m. Kelly’s Steak and Seafood is another Boalsburg must. You can’t miss it—just look for the giant bull stationed curiously on its rooftop. Go land or sea; either way, you won’t go wrong. The Diamond, Boalsburg’s main drag, retains its 18th and 19th century architectural integrity, but new businesses breathe new life into the village. Seven Mountains Wine Cellars have recently opened a wine bar on Main St.—a welcome addition to the antique shops, clothing boutiques and other retailers. Follow the announcements on their Facebook page to keep tabs on BOGO deals and changing hours. Their next-door neighbor, gourmet chocolatier Chocolates by Leopold, also brings bliss to the Diamond. Duffy’s Tavern was established nearly 200 years ago, and while its menu has a modern flare, the décor drips with antique class, guaranteed to leave millenials with this dilemma: “I need to Instagram this grilled Chilean sea bass, but it just feels so wrong to have my cell phone out!” Maybe

the ambiance isn’t strong enough to facilitate time travel, but it comes close. As if idyllic scenery and good eats weren’t enough to make the town sell itself, get a load of this historical tidbit: Boalsburg is widely accepted as the birthplace of Memorial Day! Legend has it, in 1864, three women gathered to decorate the graves of two local men who lost their lives serving in the Civil War. Those women—Emma Hunter, Sophie Keller, and Elizabeth Myers—are credited with initiating the holiday and are honored in a monument seated in the cemetery across from the Military Museum. A plaque bears this inscription: “The Memorial Day monument commemorates the birth of a national tradition of remembrance.” And so it is that we gather still to remember those who have died in military service. Boalsburg does it in style to this day, with commemorative and celebratory festivities all weekend long. This year, The Boalsburg Fire Company Carnival will run from Thursday evening, May 26th through the 30th. It’s the volunteer fire company’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and purchasing a wristband secures access to rides for the duration—now, that’s a win-win. Throughout the weekend, there will be a parade, re-enactments, live music and more. Vendors show off and sell handcrafted goods, and nearly 500 runners of all ages unite for the challenging annual 3.8-mile Boalsburg Memorial Day Run. Local and national pride are alive and well in Boalsburg; this is especially true on the last Monday in May. If you’re planning a Happy Valley getaway, consider reserving a room in one of Boalsburg’s bed and breakfast inns, like Springfield House on Main St. Experience old-fashioned comfort with modern amenities in the well-kept and renovated 1840's house. 25 Years of Golf Classics
Sigma Chi Alumni Show How It’s Done For 25 years, Sigma Chi alumni have been getting together to play golf. It started with eight guys walking the courses, playing 36 holes on a Saturday and stopping for hot dogs in between. It grew to three foursomes, then four, then 10. By 2015, 116 brothers hit the links, with 125 more showing up for the Steak Bake that weekend. The tournament runs over a weekend, with golf at the White Course on Friday and the Blue Course on Saturday. There are contests each year with prizes for Longest Drive, Straightest Drive and Closest to the Pin, as well as second and third place in the Net and Gross flights will be awarded as well. This past year Team "FALL ’98" nabbed the coveted "Tacky Jackets" after they carded a 57 to finish Saturday’s team scramble at the Blue Course. They won out over teams with names like "Team Thome" and "Team

Beagle." Unfortunately, the vaunted "AARP Team" didn’t make it to 2015 Classic to fight for the title. It’s time for these alumni – brothers – to see each other each year, and some come from places like California and Colorado to meet up. It’s more than a golf outing – it’s become “The Granddaddy of Them All” … a time-honored tradition that just reinforces the friendships they have cemented during their time at Penn State.

“The friendships, these guys are my lifelong friends,” Joe Conaty ’82, who was the the Tournament Director for over 15 years says. “The people I talk to every week in my life – daily – are my fraternity brothers. It’s very cool.” What’s the secret to such a successful event? First, it’s the relationships. Sigma Chi has more than 1,000 alumni who are active in communicating, coming back to campus to visit their fraternity house and, most importantly, keeping up with each other. While their golf classic is a highlight of the year, they meet throughout the year for pheasant hunts and other outings.

They have a hotel group-rated for the event, and the weekend’s activities split into days so guests can plan to attend some or all of the events. Lastly, it’s the location. With a plethora of catering options, accommo-

dations that range from newly built hostels to affordable hotels and golf courses at the ready, Happy Valley is just ready to come back to. Penn State helps in the planning, the scoring of the event and with the Penn State Golf Shop being the Award Supplier. According to Steve Eskey, Assistant Golf Professional at the Penn State Golf Courses, “Sigma Chi has the longest running and the largest Alumni Golf event at Penn State. We are proud to have hosted them for 25 years.” Sigma Chi already has their 26th Golf Classic rapidly approaching. Kindergarten Options are Plentiful in Happy Valley By Holly Swanson
Although five years old is the standard cut-off for entering kindergarten, the decision about whether or not to send your child to school can be a tough one for many families. Children who are close to the minimum age or those who have struggled in preschool might be better served by an additional year of preschool or a shorter day of kindergarten. Fortunately, families in Central Pennsylvania have a myriad of school choices, with excellent public schools and private kindergartens. “From an early childhood educator’s view, kindergarten is the new first grade with an increased focus on academic skills taking precedence over a play-based philosophy that existed a decade 16
ago,” says Dianne Sefter, director of Good Shepherd Christian Preschool on Science Park Road in State College. “Play and active learning situations based on the development of a five to six-yearold child have to be pushed aside in most kindergarten classrooms when teachers are required to ‘teach to the test’ as standards are pushed to younger and younger ages.”

Can they separate from you easily, and vice versa?” Sefter identifies easily understood language as another

indicator of full-day kindergarten readiness, but assures parents that help is available for children exhibiting delays. “Your family physician can refer your child for observation and extra help if they are having difficulties. The great news is that we have an excellent school district that can provide for their needs in these areas.” Laurel Sanders, executive director of the Grace Lutheran Preschool on South Garner Street in State College, echoes these sentiments. “We see many families who feel that a smaller size is a real benefit for their children. Some families may feel that their children aren’t ready for a full-day program, and it seems daunting.” Worries about their young children getting “lost in the crowd” and being discouraged by a lack of individual attention often

drive parents to look into other kindergarten options. “We are very blessed to have a wonderful school district here, but since we keep our kindergarten class at 16, we are able to give more individual attention and can help them in areas where they need assistance,” Sanders says. “Children are naturally motivated to learn and love it if they are in a stimulating environment,” says Sefter. “Simply reading to your child on a daily basis, limiting screen time and providing ample opportunities for play and interactions with other children should help prepare your child for this important transition in their life!” It’s important to keep in mind that when you chose a faithbased or charter school for kindergarten, you still have the option of sending your child to public kindergarten or first grade the following year. Many parents like to ease their child into a half-day program for a year before deciding what the next step should be. “We have never had a parent who regretted holding their child back from kindergarten because their child was struggling socially,” Sefter says. “The more confidence a child has in their abilities and relationships with others, the more likely they are to succeed in a new situation like kindergarten.” The following is a list of public, private and charter schools that are open to kindergarten students.

One look at downtown State College and it’s obvious that the region is in the midst of a growth spurt. Cranes tower over construction projects while new businesses are taking over vacant buildings. It’s almost hard to keep up with the news about what stores and restaurants are going where, so we’ve compiled a list of the newest businesses—and those we’re eagerly anticipating—in Happy Valley.

Tokyo Sushi & Hibachi
Corner of Garner Street and College Ave If you’re in the mood for reasonably priced hibachi, Tokyo Sushi is the place to be. With more than 70 styles of sushi rolls and traditional Asian entrées, this new restaurant is sure to be a hit in the State College market. The only downside is that space limitations prevent them from offering the traditional sit-down hibachi tables, but the fresh and flavorful food is reason enough to stop by.
Fasta & Ravioli Co.
129 South Fraser Street Following the fire at their Pleasant Gap location, Fasta and Ravioli Co. has reopened in a new location on Fraser Street. This was the location of their original store, which was occupied for the past several years by Good Seed Baking Co. until its recent closure. Their Pleasant Gap location is still under reconstruction but will reopen soon. A mainstay of local farmers’ markets, Fasta & Ravioli Co. produces fresh pasta made from locally sourced ingredients. They also offer olive oil and sauces to complete any pasta dish.

559 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall After 25 years as The Mount Nittany Inn, the iconic restaurant sitting at the top of Mt. Nittany Ridge has been purchased by Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering and will be used as a special events center. Opening this summer, Above the Valley will host weddings, mitzvahs, special occasions, conferences and other memorable events. The space can accommodate over 200 guests with ample space for buffets and dance floors. Smaller rooms are also available for more intimate affairs, but no matter what size
With a Target store already successfully anchored on Colonnade Boulevard, there’s little to say about this national retailer that State College residents don’t already know. This new store will occupy space in the Fraser Centre and will certainly simplify students’ lives.
Federal Taphouse
This soon-to-be opened restaurant is owned by two Penn State graduates who have found a niche in craft beer and scratch kitchen markets of central Pennsylvania. When it opens in the fall, Federal Taphouse will feature 100 craft beers along with a farm-to-table menu boasting local meats and vegetables alongside artisan pizza. They’ll also offer off-site event catering.
H&M
A newcomer to the State College retail market, this Swedish-based clothing store will be a welcome addition to the downtown shopping scene. Their inexpensive lines include business casual, men’s wear and children’s clothing. In keeping with the area’s interest in eco-friendly practices, they also accept clothing donations and offer in-store coupons for used garments.

It’s a brand new year here in Happy Valley – that means a new year of WingFest, the Festival of the Arts and Homecoming. Seems like a good time to remember the top 20 things that Happy Valley does better than anyone else!

There are so many options for your drinking pleasure. We specialize in microbreweries and have a plethora of bars for you to hop around, drinking your fill (but no more). We have more for you here.
Yes, we hear you. Autumn is pretty great, with the Lions on the field, and the leaves turning on Mount Nittany. But spring here? It’s stellar – and in just a few weeks, it will be graduation and suddenly you have this place to yourself. It’s a great time to try a new restaurant, hike Mount Nittany, rent a bike, see a show, and check out the Arboretum in full bloom.
3. Small towns
Boalsburg, Bellefonte, Huntingdon and Millheim each have their own unique appeal. From the birthplace of Memorial Day to Victorian charm to sharing the road with a horse and buggy, it’s all here. (see page 11)
5. Start-Ups
There are incredible opportunities here, for those looking for secure and rewarding employment as well as for those with an entrepreneurial spirit. There is plenty of help for start-ups in Happy Valley, which have created an environment of thriving small (but quickly growing) businesses. Miles of trails that take you through town, or into the wild. Backcountry roads or steep mountain climbs that will leave your legs aching. Check out Raystown Lake’s Allegrippis Trail, thirty-three miles of singletrack bliss, built on the surrounding hills of Pennsylvania’s largest lake, Raystown. Trails range from beginner to expert and are owned by the Friends of Raystown Lake (FRL) maintained by volunteer efforts of the Raystown Mountain Bicycling Association (RMBA).

There are five beautiful state parks in Happy Valley, perfect for the whole family to enjoy year-round outdoor fun. Plus, a slew of restaurants that are perfect for all ages. Happy Valley is also home to perfectly-sized amusement parks, family-oriented festivals and the new Children’s Garden at the Penn State Arboretum.
So, our college has its own Creamery. I mean, if a college actually has classes to teach how to make ice cream, it’s bound to be pretty good stuff. The Berkey Creamery isn’t just pretty good, it’s the best. They sell about 4,000 cones on a football weekend and almost always have a line. Head off campus to local tradition Meyer Dairy for one of their beloved flavors, including unique favorite, Grape Nut.

Spring means the clock just reset and we get to enjoy all our fests all over again! Arts Fest, the People’s Choice Festival, Heritage Days and the Boalsburg Arts and Crafts, just to name a few.
We’re talking about some of the best ribs, pulled pork and chicken that there is in this country. Yeah, we just went that far. Don’t believe us? Bring on a taste test.

Eating in a place like Happy Valley is almost always a local experience. Home to a thriving agricultural community, food doesn’t have to travel far. That makes the farm-to-table experience in our restaurants a particular treat. It also makes our annual Culinary Week a pretty special experience. We’ve also got the Grange Fair, Ag Progress Days and the PA Ag Show, premier events that showcase our local farmers and the ag innovation coming out of Penn State.
12. Hidden History
The PA Military Museum has cannons, the Penn State All-Sports Museum has the history of Nittany Lion Athletics and Penn’s Cave has a tour through a water cavern that’s rife with history. Bellefonte has been home to five Pennsylvania governors as well as governors of two other states.

When you get there, you’ll find fresh foods and goods that just might make you give up shopping at a grocery store. Bonus, Farmers' Markets sell local wine and cider, plus homemade items like cheese, yogurt, jams, jellies, breads, pasta, and more.

Happy Valley excels at giving back with charities like Coaches vs. Cancer, the PA Special Olympics, THON. THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raising more than $137 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. This year alone, they raised $9,770,332.32!
19. Entertainment
You don’t have to trek to NYC to see the big shows. Between the Center for the Performing Arts, Bryce Jordan Center and the State Theatre you will see performers of fame from all eras and all varieties. Cher, the Beach Boys, Cirque du Soleil… It’s kind of wonderful.
20. Football Saturdays
It’s never too early to think fall football! Penn State was named “The Greatest Show in College Football” by Sports Illustrated. If you don’t know why, it’s only because you’ve never been here to see a White Out. The tailgating is quite possibly the best in the world. For crying out loud, Nittanyville is a huge encampment of tailgaters sleeping outside to prep for the game! And this year, we are especially excited. WE ARE!

A Student’s Guide to Downtown Hot Spots By Matthew Manahan
Our downtown is no flashy metropolis, but there are plenty of good times to be had if you’re visiting for the weekend! As a senior here at Penn State, I know my way around town. Here are my recommendations for places to visit the next time you’re here. The Phyrst It has been ranked amongst the best college bars by publications such as Business Insider and Thrillist. Situated on East Beaver Avenue, this basement bar is known for its variety of drinks, daily live music and upbeat atmosphere. Don’t be surprised to see a line wrapped around the block. Tadashi Located on West College Avenue, this small Japanese restaurant offers a broad range of dishes, from hand rolled sushi to ramen noodles, all for a reasonable price. The interior is compact and generally crowded, but provides a very relaxed atmosphere. The food is fresh and comes out quickly. If you’re not sure what to get, you can’t go wrong with any type of sushi. For an entrée, I recommend trying the Spicy Miso Ramen soup.

The Palmer Museum of Art
Herwig’s Austrian Bistro Herwig’s, another West College Avenue favorite, serves up authentic Austrian food in a friendly, playful atmosphere. The specials change daily, but the entrées are always the same. The last time I was there, I ordered reisfleisch, a mildly spicy pork and rice dish flavored with Hungarian paprika. Their motto says it all: “Welcome to Herwig’s: where bacon is an herb!” The Family Clothesline If you don’t have any Penn State apparel yet or need to add to your collection, The Family Clothesline is the place to go. Located on East College Avenue, this store carries all things PSU. Penn State alum and recent Super Bowl champ Jordan Norwood will be there signing autographs before the Blue-White game. The Palmer Museum of Art Positioned toward the top of Penn State’s campus, the Palmer displays extensive permanent collections and rotating exhibitions free to the public. The galleries represent different world cultures and time periods. Take a guided tour or roam around at your leisure.
