unite for children

Welcome to the UNICEF Inspired

UNICEF Inspired Gifts are much more than virtual gifts - they are real, life-saving and life-changing items that we supply to children and communities throughout the world, right through the year. Your friend or relative might not be expecting 500 bowls of porridge as a present but when they see how their Inspired Gift can help save a child suffering from malnutrition, it’s bound to be truly appreciated.

• a great choice of Inspired Gifts - from gardening kits to a school-in-a-box, • a great choice of gift cards, • fantastic eGreetings, • double satisfaction - your friend or relative receives an original gift AND you both get the satisfaction of changing a child’s life.

The facts Every 20 seconds, today and every day, a child under the age of five will die from an easily preventable cause. These children’s lives can be saved by the low-cost solutions that UNICEF provides. Supplies such as vaccines, rehydration salts and water pumps. With an Inspired Gift, together we will be directly helping children to survive and thrive. It’s as simple as that.

Support Schools for Africa In sub-Saharan Africa alone, 45 million children don’t get the chance to go to school. For most of Africa’s children, education represents the only chance to escape from entrenched poverty. School is about much more than providing work skills. It’s playing an increasingly vital role in helping children secure their own future – improving confidence, community cohesion and providing knowledge of health and nutrition to keep children safe and well. In the child-friendly Schools for Africa campaign, UNICEF is working with partners in six of Africa’s most needy countries. The programme includes building new schools, improving water and sanitation facilities in existing schools, teacher training, sports and play facilities, school furniture and providing equipment from pens and pencils to sports equipment. With Inspired Gifts, you can support the Schools for Africa programme with a gift of £15 to £150, or provide school furniture or learning materials. Ref: £15 SFA01 / £50 SFA02A / £150 SFA03

How UNICEF Inspired Gifts Work

The cold chain UNICEF Inspired Gifts are far more than ‘virtual’ gifts - they are real, life-saving and life-changing gifts that are being distributed to children and communities around the world right through the year. For example, UNICEF procures vaccines for 40 per cent of the world’s children around three billion doses a year! UNICEF is the world’s largest provider of mosquito nets - almost 19 million in 2008.

Vaccines are dispatched from the warehouse.

20

You purchase an Inspired Gift of 100 vaccines for a friend.

Vaccines received by the UNICEF country office or partner organisation and stored in refrigerated cabinets.

How is my money spent? Whichever gift you decide to purchase, you will enable UNICEF to provide that item to vulnerable children and communities around the world. We cannot tell you exactly which country your gift will be supplied to, but we will give examples of where some of the supplies have benefited children and communities. For example, if you buy a gift of measles vaccines, UNICEF will transport 100 vaccines to one of its country offices or partner organisations. The illustration below shows the journey your vaccines will go on to reach vulnerable children.

During emergencies, planes and helicopters may be used to deliver vaccines to children as quickly as possible.

Vaccines ‘quality checked’ before despatch. Vaccines transferred to smaller portable refrigerators for onward distribution.

Vaccines delivered in small vaccine carriers to local clinics and immunisation centres.

Changing needs and priorities The range of gifts we supply is determined by the needs of the communities and programmes that UNICEF supports. Sometimes, as needs change over the course of the year, we might substitute a particular gift bought for a related item that is needed more, ie chalks instead of pencils, or water tanks instead of water pumps. Where we know that this might happen at the time of printing, we’ve clearly labelled these items in the brochure. Please see online for further updates.

UNICEF supplied almost 2.6 billion doses of vaccine in 2008. Vaccines are monitored to ensure they are kept at the right temperature to remain effective.

By any means! Bicycles, motorcycles, even donkeys - all play a part in reaching the most remote communities.

Vulnerable children are protected!

UNICEF supplied 2.6 billion doses of vaccines in 2008, helping to save a record number of lives. A major challenge is to keep vaccines at an effective temperature, especially in hot climates. Measles still kills more than 850 children every day, and widespread immunisation programmes are vital in stamping out this killer disease. Supply 100 doses of the vaccine to immunisation programmes around the world. As a solution to measles, it’s simple; as a gift, it’s inspired.

Measles vaccines

Mosquito nets The lives of as many as 500,000 children could be saved every year in Africa, if all children under the age of five slept under mosquito nets treated with insect repellant. In a study in Kenya, these nets reduced deaths from malaria by 44 per cent, reduced the number of children admitted to hospital suffering from malaria by 41 per cent and reduced childhood deaths from all causes by one third. UNICEF is the world’s leading provider of mosquito nets, focusing on protecting children and pregnant women. Health workers train women in the correct and consistent use of nets to prevent disease. Protect five families from malaria by supplying mosquito nets treated with long-lasting insect repellant so they remain effective as children grow.

Help children affected by HIV/AIDS

Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV Mary (pictured) discovered she had HIV when pregnant with her youngest child. She is one of the lucky ones. Almost every minute of every day a baby is born with HIV - passed on from their mother during pregnancy, labour or delivery. Mary attended a clinic where they routinely test pregnant women for HIV. Her diagnosis came in time to help prevent her passing the virus to her child, and she received treatment and care so that her baby was born free from HIV. “It was very simple. Just one tablet when I went into labour and syrup for my baby, Samuel, at hospital after his birth.” Mary Wasike Mary received an opportunity currently denied to millions of other mums-to-be, and thanks to the life-saving medicine she receives, she has the chance to care for her children and watch them grow. “When the nurse told me Samuel was born free from HIV, it was the happiest day of my life. I was so excited, I couldn’t sleep.”

Emergencies in focus

Emergency response in D.R. Congo, 2008 In the Democratic Republic of Congo, ongoing fighting between Government and rebel forces in the eastern North Kivu Province continues to threaten children and families. Over one million people in the province are now displaced, with others fleeing across borders to Uganda and Rwanda. This photograph shows children overlooking a UNICEF-assisted child-friendly space for children whose families have been displaced by the recent fighting. The spaces are safe gathering places for children, with trained adults who provide basic care and psychosocial services. UNICEF has intensified its emergency programme and is working to provide clean water and toilets to help prevent disease outbreaks, medical and immunisation supplies, blankets and emergency food supplies to prevent and treat malnutrition.

Children, especially in Africa and Asia, are already suffering as a result of climate change. They face a future in which changes in temperature and precipitation mean that: disasters, violence and disease will be more frequent and intense; clean water becomes less accessible and incomes will fall. The negative impacts of climate change are predicted to lead to increased child poverty, more inequality, higher malnutrition and death rates. UNICEF is already working with children and their communities to deal with climate change by: • supporting communities to better prepare for natural disasters as they become more frequent, • tackling the problem of contaminated and/or diminishing water supplies by providing wells and pumps and using innovative techniques such as rainwater harvesting, • providing education to help children adapt to their changing climate, including practical learning through tree planting, installing solar panels and starting school gardens.

You might want to create a list of individual items (such as pencils, vaccines, mosquito nets and so on) that your friends can choose from, or raise funds towards one larger gift such as a water pump.

For details visit www.unicef.org.uk/shop and follow the Big Day List link on the right of the page. (UNICEF can also tailor-make wedding favour packages for your big day – see online for details.)
