Close enough to the capital to assert a cosmopolitan air yet far enough away to offer a slightly more relaxed pace of life in a surprisingly rural setting.

Crown Estate, National Trust and Green Belt land make this region one of the greenest in the South East. Add to that arguably the most stunning 20-mile stretch of the River Thames, 1,000 years of history and an unrivalled royal heritage and it’s easy to see why it has become home to some the country’s top sporting and cultural events, a few of the UK’s most iconic visitor attractions and some surprising hidden gems.

Windsor Castle is of course the dazzling centrepiece sat high on the hill for all to admire. The oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, it dominates the skyline and never ceases to stop first-time visitors in their awestruck tracks.

Discover Windsor Eton with a Self-guided Walking Trail THE QUEEN’S WALKWAY is 6.373km (approximately 4 miles) long and connects 63 of Windsor’s most significant attractions. Designed by The Outdoor Trust, in partnership with local people, it recognised the moment on 9 September 2015 when Her Majesty The Queen had reigned for 63 years, 7 months and 3 days to become Britain’s longest reigning monarch. The Queen’s Walkway will help you explore this historic town with its theatre, churches, parks and gardens, elegant residential streets, many historic monuments, railway stations and the River Thames. Pick up a copy from the Royal Windsor Information Centre,

download it at windsor.gov.uk/queens-walkway or scan The Queen’s Walkway QR Code (left). SITUATED JUST ACROSS THE RIVER from Windsor via a pedestrian footbridge, the town of Eton has a thriving community and diverse heritage. The Eton Walkway, a 2-mile/one-hour circular walk, connects 18 points of interest in the town starting at Windsor Bridge. Permanent bronze markers are set in the ground to identify the route of the Walkway and use Eton’s coat of arms, originally given to the town by King Henry VI in 1449. Pick up a copy from the Visit Eton Information Centre, download it here windsor.gov.uk/eton-walkway or scan the Eton Walkway QR Code (right).
