CONTENTS

This portfolio is intended for applying for the position of Architectural Part 2 assistant.

The design theory “Negative Architecture” impressed me a lot. It makes architecture “disappear” when facing the history and environment. In the certain occasion, the architecture is not the protagonist, but a link which serves as a support and connection.

Keeping this theory in mind, after several years of exploration, I have formed my unique design method. The main design steps are finding problems, solving problems, integrating emotions, and building communication bonds between people and architecture.

I pay attention on the in-depth design from multiple spatial-scale. I try to connect the architecture with surrounding environment, historical background, urban development trend and other factors; focus on the dialogue and the relationship between space and people, and the integration of architecture and environment.

BLEND: SPORTS POCKET PARK

I find two kinds of figure in Panama City: the wealthy 'birds', which also represent the dominant colonial culture, and the marginalised 'cats' living on the edge of the city, that also represent to the historical indigenous cultures. These two identities have their own culture, currency, and urban fabric. But they are not equal. The bird occupies most of the city's resources and has become the international identity of Panama City.

Developed on the banks of Rio Abajo in San Miguelito, this project explores how architecture can be a medium to reconnect and intermingle these two different identities and give visibility to the marginalised communities. The river is today the natural boundary between the territories of the cats and the birds.

A range of pocket spaces of diverse scales that open on either side of the river become meeting points for cats and birds. Various sports courts and civic programmes intensify the uses of some these open spaces. The study found that there are sports courts in both areas, but they operate locally since they are not easily accessible from the opposite riverside. This project aims to create a public ground with a suite of sports courts in one of these pocket spaces in Rio Abajo where Cats and Birds can encounter spontaneously. Through sports, opportunities for mutual communication and understanding are created, crossing barriers, and forming mutual recognition and integrity.

Lightness

The building should be lightly integrated into the site, taking into account the site limitations and the surrounding low-rise residences. Therefore, the roof height was minimized as much as possible on the side facing the residences, ensuring it did not exceed the height of the surrounding buildings. As the building approaches the riverbank, the roof gradually rises, echoing the library tower located on the opposite side of the river.

Mix Sports Courts

Various sports courts are situated under a concrete shell. The sheet wall extends radially from the interior of the site towards the riverbank, separating the courts while encompassing changing rooms and toilets. The height of the wall varies depending on the position of the court, providing a seating area without obstructing the view.

The water reflection greatly enhances the spatial capacity by completing the other half of the arch, creating a more cohesive and harmonious space.

Release space under the platform

To alleviate the sense of depression in the area beneath the first-floor platform, this part of the site is lowered, raising the clear height from 3 meters to 4.5 meters. A hole is created in the platform to allow sunlight to penetrate into the landscaped area beneath. A pool is also installed to further enhance the reflection of sunlight, resulting in a bright and open space.

Various materials are utilized in the pavement of the site to create a contrast, such as hard stone, soft grass, and neutral wood paneling.

A void was created in the platform to enable sunlight to penetrate and illuminate the landscape beneath. Additionally, a pool was incorporated to amplify the reflection of sunlight, enhancing the brightness and openness of the space.

Visual Interaction

The first-floor platform functions as a bridge connecting the two river banks. Part of the platform is inserted into the space under the arch, integrating with the concrete shell, sharing space, and complementing the function of the library tower, thereby creating an active motivation for crossing the river.

Moreover, the platform is connected to the surrounding courts via a large-scale staircase that accommodates the flow of people, doubles as a grandstand for watching games, and provides a space for people to gather.

Walking on the platform, you can see the library tower, guiding the flow of people to approach the tower, making the tower an extension of the platform. The atrium of the platform brings sunlight into the lower space and creates a visual connection with the library tower.

The sports courts beneath the shell also have some horizontal transparency. The brick walls divide the courts into different scales and the openings in the walls achieve a continuous line of sight. This allows visitors not only to experience the undulating changes of the arch within each space but also to see the activities on the other courts.

From the entrance, one can see the basketball court in the distance, while also perceiving changes in the level of the space both horizontally and vertically.

Emotional Tour

It is human nature to be close to nature, and the saying that man and nature are in harmony continues to this day, but we are wondering what role architecture should play in the process of man and nature. "A bridge does not merely connect two shores that already exist, for it is only when a bridge flies over water that the two shores become two." A quote from a book on architectural phenomena became the starting point for our design and a new understanding of the architecture of natural landscapes.

The existence of architecture provides a place for people to perceive the natural environment, i.e. architecture is a container for observing natural changes. How certain people relate to each other in certain environments, architecture becomes a medium to communicate with each other. Architectural spaces of different scales and shapes can mobilize human emotions and trigger a range of behaviors to occur. In a given space, one does not just observe with one's eyes, but experiences the surroundings with one's heart, which gives one a special feeling, that is, one gets emotional feedback from the materials, sounds, temperature and light in a given space. We want the architecture to intervene in the relationship between man and nature in such a poetic way, to integrate and harmonize with each other.

Volcanoes are rich in natural resources and can be used in various fields, so people began to exploit volcanoes uncontrollably for the sake of profits, resulting in the original integrity of the solemn volcano, a deep pit of artificial mining.Unexpectedly, there are natural scenery inside the pit.

We split the complete landscape and organised it with the findings into the route, making the architecture as a surprise on the tour route.

The slope of the hill is steep, so build a "Z" shaped downhill ramp, and the view changes as you make repeated turns down the hill.

Flashing Kowloon [ THE KOWLOON WALLED CITY, HONGKONG ]

All these ordinary things were happening in an extraordinary place.

The question we keep asking ourselves is when expansion is no longer the theme of urban areas development, what will people deal with the old urban areas to preserve the spirit of the space?

Is there a better and faster way to create new skyscrapers as the old constructions become dilapidated? So we selected a once dilapidated and densely populated typical community--Kowloon walled city. Due to the use area was finite, there were a large number of public space use requirements. We discussed a variety of possibility to use a function of a single prototype of space. We believe that the emergence of holographic projection will definitely affect the appearance of constructions and the future of cities.

Extract spatial prototypes

1.Reform

Elements of the original life scene are extracted, simplified into spatial archetypes, and transfered into new spatial forms through holographic projection. When the residents are in such a scene, they may remind of the past life scene in the Kowloon Walled City.

2.Supplement

The original Kowloon Walled City severely lack of public facilities and needs some supplementation. Simplify the building spaces for different functions, extract similar spatial prototypes, and then project them to achieve diversity.

City.

A new park is born.

Based on the survey of the population within the Kowloon Walled City, it was found that the majority of residents reside there, with only a small portion being merchants seeking livelihoods within the city. Therefore, the internal structures of the Walled City are predominantly residential, with only one community center serving as the primary infrastructure located in the middle of the city.

Preserve the outermost layer of residential buildings as the facade of the Walled City. Selectively demolish internal residential units to make room for the new theme park within the Walled City's structure, while preserving the original main roads.

Repurpose the peripheral buildings with new functions to attract low-income individuals from the city, providing them with a new living environment and job opportunities.
