Order In the first paragraph, the author shows the severe effect of the influenza by stating that toll of death in a short period of time. Then, she focuses on the United States as a clear example of this plague. In the third paragraph, she compares between the 1918 epidemic and previous lethal ones. In the remaining paragraphs, she gives the reasons that made the public focus on other significant events at the time. Eventually, she concludes her essay by showing how weak was the global reaction to this devastating incident in the history of the human kind.

Evidence The writer uses statistics of how many people died. She says that the epidemic “scooped” the victims, a word which implies the speed and randomness of the spread of the deadly infection. Even though all these facts, statistics and use of frightening words are meant to appeal to the reader’s emotions, Morrisey turns to logic to draw a conclusion, saying that it would be reasonable for an epidemic so tragic to be feared and remembered. But her conclusion did not work out, and Morrisey wonders why.

Style At the beginning, Morrisey uses emotional diction to support her claim. She repeats the word “epidemic” a few times and also uses “plague” and “pandemic.” In addition, Morrisey says that the outbreak of influenza was the “third greatest plague in the history of mankind,” and also “the most devastating epidemic since the Middle Ages”.

Conclusion

• Rephrase the main idea

• give a general evaluation

• Conclusion

Throughout the essay, Morrisey says that it is reasonable for an epidemic so tragic to be feared and remembered. Overall, she has built a strong persuasive argument and succeeds in drawing our attention to this forgotten even in history.
