As we mark the end of what has been a difficult financial year for most industries, I’d like to thank our industry partners, clients, consultants, peers, subcontractors, suppliers and our own people at Hansen Yuncken, for the considerable resilience and adaptability in continuing to deliver exceptional construction projects in these challenging times.

Never has there been a more important time to support each other and our communities. While our company ethos thrives on iconic endeavours and excellence in delivery of our projects, we are equally embracing our social enterprising and basic care for each other and the community.

This has been reflected in our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan undertaking as we actively advocate reconciliation and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our focus on sustainability isn’t something new.

In fact, it has long been ingrained in the way that we do business.

Our policies and processes build on the history of working with and for the community in four key areas: procurement and supply chain, diversity and inclusion, social sustainability and environmental sustainability.

This provides a framework for the company’s ongoing community engagement and initiatives.

We remain steadfast in encouraging local employment and supporting local economies.

As a proud, private, Australian owned business, this matters deeply to us. We make the most of local knowledge and supplies across all our projects and our sponsorship and philanthropic initiatives build on existing relationships to support our projects and the communities we build in. At our Thomas Dixon Centre Redevelopment, this was acknowledged with sponsorship of the Queensland Ballet Company, and in Victoria, we have again sponsored The Torch initiative.

We take our commitments seriously. In promoting gender diversity, our national executive team is representative of our authenticity, with 33% female participation within that senior team. This is real support and acknowledgement of the talent we have of women in construction and specifically at Hansen Yuncken.

This confidence continues as we increase our sector portfolios with iconic builds such as the heritage restoration of Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre; the highly complex Inner Sydney High School; The Hedberg transformation in Tasmania, Gold Coast’s dynamic HOTA Gallery; and the bold vision realised at the Victorian Pride Centre.

Of course, business growth and success are an essential part of every business. We have delivered a solid financial performance to date and set ourselves up for success into the future, with a refreshed purpose and strategy to grow, through the driven talent and sheer hard work of our people.

Construction projects bring economic benefits to a community that go well beyond the immediate creation of local jobs. There are opportunities throughout the life of a project to contribute to the local area – by awarding contracts to local companies to supply goods and services, by leaving

infrastructure in place at the end of a project or by recycling materials into the community on completion. Initiatives might be as significant as the requirement of subcontractors to employ people of Indigenous background or the long term unemployed, or smaller gestures such as manning the barbecue at a local fundraiser. All have the potential to make a positive impact on the local community while reinforcing that, at Hansen Yuncken, we care.

Victorian Pride Centre With barely a straight edge in sight, this flagship project is unlike any other in Australia – if not the world. With a bespoke and architecturally impressive design spanning over 4-storeys, complexity lay in every inch of the building. Due to the shape of the structure, no two panels are the same. Standing curb side, bystanders can marvel in the many scalloped and intricate design features including the 41 circular and elliptical windows, 1,000+ individually hand worked aluminium cladding panels and 720 panels of various shaped glass.

Internally, the extraordinary workmanship doesn’t end there. An 18 metre tall Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) sculptured eggshell lies in the very heart of the Pride Centre’s atrium. Spanning from ground floor right up to the rooftop, each of the 34 panels that make up the emu shaped egg were designed and constructed using extensive digital modelling and prototyping of feature materials, ensuring buildability, ease of installation, and pinpoint precision to ensure quality construction.

Industry Lanes, a joint venture development between Salta Properties and Abacus Property, is setting a new benchmark in the commercial space – incorporating smart technology, shared flexible work spaces, generous open air courtyards and terraces to prioritise a healthy and vibrant standard of progressive work lifestyle.

Cutting edge VDC and BIM technology are driving an efficient quality construct. Add impressive sustainability targets including 5-Star Green Star Design and As Built v1.2, 5-Star NABERS Energy and 1-Star Fitwel, and this landmark project ticks all the boxes.

Lot Fourteen McEwin Building Refurbishment Skillfully complementing and enhancing key heritage features into a modern environment to be used by the Australian Space Agency and other forward-thinking industries, with sustainability front of mind. The Lot Fourteen precinct has set high targets for ESD initiatives, with the precinct aiming to achieve the southern hemisphere’s first WELL Community rating from the International WELL Building Institute. The McEwin Building refurbishment has achieved a 6-Star Green Star certification, aligning with the precinct’s target of every building achieving a 6-Star Green Star rating for design and construction.

Inner Sydney High School A perfect example of old meets new, this project blends refurbished heritage structures with state of the art vertical teaching spaces. Careful planning and innovative thinking have underpinned this project, using BIM technology to map base building elements, manage complex services installations and ensure protection of nearby trees. Prioritising safety throughout this complex project, a comprehensive fire safety strategy was developed from the outset in response to the close proximity of construction works and heritage structures.

The project team expertly managed the inherent challenges of a live environment, with carefully considered staging and crane-fitted interlock systems to prevent lifting over operational school buildings. To accommodate a seamless handover, a temporary generator provided power throughout commissioning of the heritage structures. Standing tall among the inner Sydney suburbs, the Inner Sydney High School is a worthy addition to Sydney’s city skyline.

The Hedberg

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) Hedberg building is the ultimate performing and creative arts destination. Co-located with the oldest operating theatre in Australia, the Theatre Royal, this fine duo boosts Tasmania’s cultural sector by enabling creative interdisciplinary education and research with a thriving music and performance hub.

Connecting to the 180 year old Theatre Royal, the highest quality box in box acoustic detailing creates the perfect barrier between performance, practice and public circulation spaces. The use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in lieu of multi layer plasterboard in the recital hall, studio theatre and salon is an Australian first for a project of this scale.

Appropriately dramatic, the exterior shimmers in the sunshine with its crinkled ‘curtains’ denoting the opening of a performance. Its bold and beautiful design complements its heritage characteristics, following the delicate restoration of The Hedberg Garage. Original bricks and oregon and cedar timber recovered from the demolition of the garage were recycled and used to maximum effect. The timber features in the salon acoustic wall linings and in façade heritage interpretation details, and the recycled bricks were inlaid into the concrete foyer floors and used as crushed, decorative gravel in landscaped areas.

Marking the end of an exciting construction journey, The Hedberg will soon become a name at the heart of Hobart’s growing role as a city of national artistic and cultural standing.

USC Moreton Bay Foundation Building

Prioritising people, places and their environment, Hansen Yuncken has delivered a world class facility designed for the next generation of digital natives. USC Moreton Bay Foundation Building creates a unique experience for its students using cutting edge, immersive information and audio visual technology with extensive hands on learning spaces that can be repurposed for nursing, science and engineering students. Adaptability and flexibility inherent in its design, the impressive 3-storey, multi purpose development includes an impressive 600 capacity internal atrium with an open auditorium suitable for community events and study hubs. Hansen Yuncken delivered an ambitious program that relied on meticulous materials handling and significant prototyping and testing of the exterior façade, to facilitate up to 50 different courses. With a looming deadline for first semester of this year, the team surpassed all expectations, achieving practical completion almost two weeks ahead of schedule.

Greater Shepparton Secondary College The Greater Shepparton Secondary College is set to be a big school built with tremendous community spirit and heart. Delivering unprecedented educational opportunities for students in the Greater Shepparton Region, this leading edge facility will be the largest in the area, built for the Victorian School Building Authority.

Driving progressive change for innovative learning spaces capable of housing up to 2,700 students, the contemporary design replaces traditional classrooms with a new ‘school within a school’ model. This is achieved through a series of smaller school buildings, conceived as houselike pods to form three intimate ‘Neighbourhoods’.

Rapidly advancing, each Neighbourhood features three houses, providing smaller, more inclusive and flexible settings for students. The new addition, an Enterprise and Innovation Centre, will provide specialist teaching and learning areas for science, Music, Arts, Drama, Robotics and Material Technology. Not to be forgotten, the original schoolhouse will be reimagined for Health and Wellbeing services. Fast tracked to welcome students in 2022, this rapid build will raise the bar in revolutionising the delivery of secondary education.

Goulburn Hospital and Health Service Redevelopment

For us, the process of construction is as much about the community as it is about the building, so when the opportunity comes along to call upon our neighbours, we grab it with both hands. Our ‘Name the Crane’ competition was a talking point at Goulburn Hospital and Health Service Redevelopment, being delivered by Health Infrastructure. Attracting entries from across the community, six year old Alex from Wollondilly Public School took out the top spot with ‘Cranium’. After all, the crane is building a hospital to help people, just like the cranium does to protect people’s brains…his words of course.

As construction reaches great heights, Cranium is helping to knit together the existing Goulburn Base Hospital and the new 4-storey Clinical Services Building to create a seamless health precinct in the heart of Goulburn.

With safety at the forefront of everything we do, the team has been on the lookout for new innovations to assist with project delivery.

Utilising a revolutionary anti-tamper locking assembly, from a local supplier, the risk of scaffold ties and couplers being detached from fixed scaffolding is reduced. The solution minimises scaffold collapse or failure, avoiding injury and disruptions. The extra measures have been acknowledged by the MBA with a nomination for the NSW Site Safety Award.

Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital Redevelopment

Working in a live operating environment, the team has adapted quickly and flexibly to hospital and tenant operational requirements, finishing one space while concurrently relocating and safely partitioning live hospital and further construction spaces as they progress. Extensive coordination has been vital to the success of this significant project. The team has already handed over 13 refurbished floors to the hospital and its tenants; demolition back to bare concrete structure and new fitouts of emergency department, specialist consultation/examination rooms, operating theatres, plant rooms, PC2 research laboratories, audio booths and offices. This was navigated around substantial live services identification, HAZMAT identification and removal, services infrastructure and complete system upgrades as part of the essential unseen works in this project. Best practice safety and planning has allowed the project team to progress this complicated redevelopment with cooperation from the hospital and tenants.

Hervey Bay Hospital Emergency Department Redevelopment

Working in live operating environments always has its challenges, but none more so than in a hospital setting. The successful construction and fitout of the Hervey Bay Hospital Emergency Department saw the local engagement of over 600 workers to achieve the staged handovers for this regional project. During preconstruction, the project team played an instrumental role in establishing formal measures to minimise disruptions to existing staff and hospital operations, including uninhibited access to the adjacent helipad. Working towards a common goal, collaborative workshops were undertaken to identify the needs of the client and affected key stakeholders, resulting in the development of the ‘Notice of Impacting Activity’; a two way process that helped to smooth out planning and approval procedures, while ensuring that the daily functions of the hospital were always kept front of mind.

Macksville Hospital Delivering with certainty is always top of our agenda and amid the challenges of 2020, we pulled out all the stops to complete Macksville Hospital 12 weeks ahead of program.

Embracing a shared vision, the entire project team accelerated the program, compressing both construction and commissioning to meet this fundamental deadline.

Servicing the Mid North Coast Local Health District communities, the early completion of Macksville Hospital helped to reduce pressure on the region’s healthcare system amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

Opening its doors in May 2020, Macksville Hospital offers increased capacity with 78 new purpose built inpatient beds while a new emergency department, operating theatre, procedure room, maternity services, community and allied health facilities all work to enhance overall patient care.

Collaborating with our stakeholders including Indigenous communities, our design consultation kick started on day one.

Developing the industry’s first virtual reality and digital prototype room for healthcare projects resulted in a seamless review process from design through to material selections — driving efficiencies right through to construction.

An ambitious façade design requiring precise coordination utilises a combination of articulated recycled red bricks with a white wash finish, rendered aerated concrete panels, insulated sandwich panels and aluminium sunshades fits well into the landscape of this suburban street. In contrast, the curved structural steel entry canopy is a striking contemporary feature of this 120 bed aged care home. The carefully coordinated interior make this a comfortable home for our ageing citizens complete with cinema, chapel, library, café, bar, men’s shed and hairdressing salon. Clever utilisation of permanent formwork system for insitu concrete walls and blowing in backfill allowed for speedy basement construction.

Bolton Clarke Fernhill Residential Aged Care Facility Stage 1a A flagship project for Bolton Clarke’s national expansion, Fernhill Residential Aged Care Facility was recently completed in Caboolture, north of Brisbane. Not one for doing things as they have always been done, a feasibility analysis was undertaken to review cost impacts, program requirements and site logistics and 4D BIM technology helped bring the project vision to life. This resulted in two fundamental changes to the structural design plans. The poured insitu vertical concrete elements were replaced with four 7-storey, freestanding precast concrete cores for the lifts and stairs and 550 precast concrete columns which would be installed between each slab level of the building. Of these two changes, perhaps the most significant was the freestanding precast concrete cores for the lifts and stairs, which were erected before the basement slab was poured to stand the full building height. This out of the box solution may be the tallest of its kind constructed in Queensland, and incredibly, took only six days to install all four core structures.

Anglicare Minto Development The Anglicare Minto Development sees the delivery of a mixed living development in Sydney's south west, comprising 220 apartments across six buildings, as well as a 100 bed residential aged care facility. With seven workfaces progressing concurrently, the expansive project saw an average daily workforce of over 400 personnel, peaking at 520 workers.

The success of the project to date and mitigation of risks to the program is a testament to the team's proactive approach to managing works on this milestone project. Despite the challenges they have faced with maintaining productivity in a challenging period, the team has consistently pushed the program and is currently in the process of handing over the completed development, on time.

With its sweeping, curved golden façade, the SkyCity Adelaide Casino Expansion offers a timeless and glamorous aesthetic for visitors to experience the ultimate in excellence and indulgence.

Featuring 120 luxury 5-star hotel rooms, a spa and wellness centre, new restaurant and bar offerings, conference and events facilities, and expanded gaming, guests experience a level of quality, extravagance and attention to detail unlike any other, attracting visitors to the Adelaide Riverbank precinct.

A complex and challenging site, the team undertook extensive stakeholder engagement providing confidence to neighbouring businesses that we understood their operational requirements, delivering beyond their expectations.

Her Majesty's Theatre Redevelopment This modern transformation celebrates the success of construction and engineering challenges while respecting the much loved heritage of Her Majesty’s Theatre. Using a detailed engineering methodology, we designed and installed a façade bracing system to protect and stabilise the heritage façade and eastern wall. Behind the façade, an intricate demolition process was used to clear the way for a brand new, state of the art theatre. A complex ‘birdcage’ scaffolding structure was carefully installed inside the building to enable delicate heritage works around complex interiors. Featuring custom joinery throughout, the stunning internal finishes of the project demonstrate an exceptional level of quality and detail. This landmark redevelopment has now increased seating capacity from 970 to nearly 1,500 in the 3-level auditorium, allowing an additional 50 performances each year – enriching the arts and renewing life to this magnificent theatre.

Sydney Coliseum Theatre A cultural landmark for Western Sydney, this project is one of the most unique and complex projects delivered in NSW. From its standout structure through to complex engineering and detailed architectural finishes, this project presented numerous challenges for the team. However, a combination of smart thinking, smart technology and a collaborative approach saw the team thrive across all aspects of project delivery.

The concrete and steel structure, service risers and auditorium fitout are just a few examples of where the team developed safer and more efficient ways to deliver this project. In addition, they drove cutting edge technology using 4D BIM models, overlays, point cloud surveys and drones to manage, plan and monitor all aspects of works in real time. This positive culture of embracing new technologies has undoubtedly raised the bar across NSW. Over two years, the team developed a strong sense of synergy and teamwork that was clearly evident from the client through to the workforce.

With an MBA Site Safety award under their belt well before practical completion, the team have well and truly demonstrated excellence across all aspects of the build.

Bulmba-ja Arts Centre Focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing artists, the Bulmba-ja Arts Centre provides a distinctive cultural destination through the refurbishment of the existing Centre of Contemporary Arts in Cairns. With a vision to support Indigenous participation, Hansen Yuncken recently sponsored two scholarships for the Jute Theatre Company, performers at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre, to nurture and inspire young Indigenous people to find their voice.

HOTA Gallery Expanding our cultural and community portfolio, this striking new cultural destination will host internationally recognised exhibitions and collections, showcasing the best in contemporary Australian and international art and design.

As the city’s home for arts, culture and civic celebration, the precinct will become a must see destination for residents and tourists. Recently completed, the new gallery will present exhibitions of international scale and content as well as the best in contemporary Australian art and design. At approximately 6,500m², this luxurious arts precinct will position the gallery in a unique niche in the national and international market.

Taking sustainability to great heights —7,505 LG Neon® 2 solar panels were installed, making this project among the largest roof-mounted solar arrays in the world and the largest single roof installation of solar in Australia. The lift took 9 hours and 110 pallets of solar panels.

With our corporate and social responsibilities aligned with client values, we look to the future for real environmental gains. No matter that the end result benefits the client with savings over 4,300 tCO2-e across the 25 year solar life span—with these goals, everyone's a winner.

Australia Post Melbourne Parcel Facility With big plans for expansion, Australia Post had unique operational requirements that influenced our design management strategy.

Housing an intricate network of conveyor belts, sorters and scanners capable of more than doubling Australia Post’s parcel processing capacity, meant designing a suitable structure to safely support this equipment was critical. Opting for a model-based design coordination process, our project team was able to shorten the design process and optimise functionality of the base building.

Qube Warehouses 3, 4 & Infrastructure Hansen Yuncken recently completed works on the brand new Warehouses 3 and 4 for Qube. The project, situated in the Moorebank Logistics Park, saw the design and construction of over 40,000m² of state of the art warehouse space between two warehouses, over 2,000m² of office facilities and a significant infrastructure package for the warehouses and lead in services for Warehouse 5. The project is an extension of the longstanding relationship Hansen Yuncken has with Qube, that has seen the delivery of the distribution centre for Target, also within the Moorebank Logistics Park, and the Mazda distribution centre in Minto.

Larger than the MCG, the whopping 22,800m2 (or 5.6 acres) of hardstand for the container storage at ACFS, saw the project team set new benchmarks for large scale industrial projects. Pouring over 8,000m3 of concrete in just 5 weeks is no easy feat. However, the team’s determination to finish in-ground services in advance, such as the perimeter stormwater and electrical network, helped accelerate the completion of pavement surrounding the massive 24,4000m2 warehouse and made this achievable. Collaboration, efficiency and innovation are key drivers underpinning the project’s success and opened access around the site to expedite the program. This facilitated access for all subsequent trades to achieve on time delivery.

Illustrious heritage features are celebrated at the recently upgraded Higher Courts, Adelaide. Requiring extensive upgrades across two locations, we didn’t just revamp a selection of the existing courts, in some cases we demolished and rebuilt them — including the careful restoration of the heritage buildings and bluestone façade which acts as a standout feature to the now contemporary circulation spaces. Vertical American oak acoustic panelling fashions an elegant and practical feature to each of the six refurbished court rooms and two large criminal courts. With business continuity top priority, vital court proceedings continued as planned with zero noise or power interruptions to the client while also respecting neighbouring businesses. Completed under the DPTI Construction Safety Expectations – our safety systems exceeded safety audits and passed with flying colours. Executed as per the staged program, our return visit to the Adelaide courts comes to another successful end.

Shepparton 1930s Law Courts Redevelopment While looks can be deceiving, there’s more than meets the eye to this 80 year old structure. Imbued with significant historical and aesthetic art deco features echoing back to 1939, this heritage listed facility has recently undergone major refurbishments presenting the team with complex challenges, replacing the existing asbestos roof as well as carefully restoring and retaining the original heritage façade.

Impressively, the team took on multiple design changes without compromising the completion date and presented a number of design solutions for access requirements to ensure the changing needs of the community were met well into the future. Proudly boasting new acoustically treated interview and mediation rooms, secure waiting areas and amenities, and providing upgrades throughout, the new specialist witness family violence courthouse – the first of its kind in rural Australia – has been transformed into a development that resonates with modern times.

Bathurst Correctional Centre Expansion Preserving the old was as important as creating the new. Unique construction practices started at the front gate with repair of sandstone dating back to the 1880s. Meticulous restoration of the grand gatehouse was juxtaposed with a new secure perimeter featuring airlocks, carefully penetrated into the existing heritage listed wall.

The extensive upgrade transformed this high grade correctional facility, capable of housing 220 maximum security inmates. Sharp problem solving and sophisticated methodologies saw the project delivered in three stages, minimising disruption to the operational facility handed over two months ahead of program.

The project provided an economic injection into the local region, with up to 150 subcontractors on site at any one time. With the wider Bathurst community struggling through a sweltering summer with minimal rainfall, the project team provided relief for the community with the Bottles for Bathurst fundraising campaign. This saw the delivery of 33,000 litres of water, reaching 138 households, with the help of a generous subcontractor on the project.

JP500 Phase 2A Operating a construction site at Safe Base Level CHARLIE is not an everyday occurrence but one we have undertaken on several occasions, and successfully at the JP500 Phase 2A facility (JP500).

At this security level, no mobile phones or personal electronic devices are allowed onsite, which can make communication in these days of high tech construction difficult. Face to face communication became an ultimate driver for the project — not only with trades onsite, but other Defence base stakeholders, given the project was completed in a live operating environment.

Honouring our commitment of delivering projects on time, the team went over and above to handover the JP500 facility ahead of schedule. Facing a significant loss of time due to inclement weather and unknown existing conditions onsite, the project team drove efficiencies by reprogramming the construction sequence, setting the project up for success.

Geoffrey Pearce Correctional Centre Managing intricate services requirements to seamlessly blend old and new networks has provided a secure operating facility for the Geoffrey Pearce Correctional Centre. Interactive workshops with project stakeholders helped the team devise an alternate master plan, providing efficiencies in construction to deliver the correctional centre four weeks ahead of program. One of the first projects to utilise innovative quality assurance processes— mapping the journey of individual prefabricated elements, using QR codes, from the manufacturer through to site installation. A collaborative partnership with the precast manufacturer, blended with skilful use of BIM to leverage shop drawings, significantly fast tracked procurement challenges and provided quality assurance for the client.

RAAF Base Wagga Mechanical & Building Services Upgrade Pushing the envelope isn’t just about putting ideas on the table – it’s about meeting practical completion three months ahead of schedule – and we did exactly that on the RAAF Base Wagga Mechanical & Building Services Upgrade. Carried out in two stages to minimise disruption to existing operations, the project was successfully completed for the Commonwealth – Department of Defence under the Defence Estates Works program. We replaced the existing HVAC plant across three 2-storey blocks along with associated building services, electrical and fire systems. Plus, the scope was extended to include 5,000m2 of additional roofing and refurbishment works comprising the removal of fixed furniture, painting, floor finishes and electrical services.

By investing considerable time and meticulous planning upfront with both our client and project partners, the team continually challenged themselves during the design and delivery stages of the project. Maximising cost savings by providing an efficient lighting alternative, along with seeking alternative design solutions through the expertise of specialised subcontractors, evolving issues were identified and resolved well in advance, resulting in a quality project that exceeded both time and cost outcomes.

Anglesea Barracks Building Refurbishment Recognised as one of Australia’s most significant historical military precincts, the well preserved Anglesea Barracks project has been as much about preserving history as constructing for the future. Working collaboratively with the Department of Defence to restore the barracks to their full potential, the team discovered markings etched into bricks, by soldiers in the barrack's military prison during the 1840s and 1850s. The valuable pieces of history, have since been preserved behind removable perspex panels to allow further investigation.
