Drone Piloting Course at Hanover High School

Dr. John A. Scola, Hanover Public School District Superintendent, has worked collaboratively with administration and staff to transform Hanover High School from a traditional high school to a fully comprehensive high school. As a result, Hanover High School students can now participate in a variety of Career and Technical Education Programs as well as a number of other credentialing programs. These opportunities allow students to learn additional real world, applicable skills that are essential in preparing graduates to be both career and college ready. In the 2019-2020 school year, Hanover High School became one of the first schools in the United States to offer an accredited Drone Piloting course. This cutting edge, visionary program enabled the school to continue to provide our students with a robust course offering that incorporates 21st century skills and emerging technologies. The class is taught by Lisa Fry, an Art and Technology Education certified teacher, and supported by David Fry, Director of Technology. The Drone Piloting curriculum includes units on weather patterns, laws and safety protocols to follow, how to build a drone from a kit, and how to disassemble a drone. Students have the opportunity to learn how to fly and operate two different types of drones. Upon successful completion of this class and curriculum, students are able to take their Aeronautical Knowledge test. To date, Hanover High School has had four students successfully complete this rigorous exam. This 21st century career has a multitude of pathways for our fortunate students, with potential jobs within real estate, agriculture, sporting events, and global information systems.

Mechatronics Lab at Hanover High School

In the fall of 2019, Hanover High School, through the generous support of Utz Brands, Inc., implemented a state-of-the-art Mechatronics lab to their expanding list of Career and College Programs. Since that time, over 50-students have completed coursework in this multidisciplinary field of science, which combines mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, systems engineering, and control engineering. The main goal of the Mechatronics Program is to provide students with the necessary skills to enter the workforce and become productive citizens in the local and global community. Additionally, Hanover High School partnered with HACCGettysburg to align the high school curriculum with the first two courses of the HACC Mechatronics Associate Degree Program. Through an articulation agreement, students from Hanover High School who are successful in the program and enter the HACCGettysburg Mechatronics Program, will receive 8-college credits. Over the past three years, multiple students have participated in various Pre-Apprenticeship opportunities at Utz Brands, Inc., and Elsner Engineering Works, Inc., providing hands-on experience in the workplace during the school day. These opportunities in high school have led to full-time employment and serve as a perfect example of how collaboration and support from all stake-holders lead to successful and innovative programs and careers.

CAPTAIN RICHARD PHILLIPS TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT MANUFACTURERS' ASSOCIATION'S 116TH ANNUAL EVENT

(York, PA) - Captain Richard Phillips, former captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, and New York Times best-selling author will be the 2022 Annual Event's guest and keynote speaker Tuesday, June 14 at PeoplesBank Park. Captain Richard Phillips is the author of A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, about his experience and his remarkable rescue. Phillips became the center of an extraordinary international drama when he was captured by Somali pirates who hijacked his ship, the first hijacking of a U.S. ship in more than 200 years. The hostage drama began when a small band of pirates leapt aboard the ship and, to protect his crew, Phillips put himself directly in harm's way, offering himself as a hostage. This dramatic story was also transformed into an Academy-Award and GoldenGlobe nominated film, Captain Phillips, which hit the big screens in fall of 2013. The Association's 116ᵗʰ Annual Event follows last year's keynote speaker, Robert O'Neill, a former US Navy Seal who was part of the team who rescued Captain

Phillips from the Somali Pirates. Captain Phillips is a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, licensed American merchant mariner and a member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots Union. The Manufacturers' Association's annual event, hosted this year at PeoplesBank Park on June 14ᵗʰ, brings together 700+ business and community leaders for an evening of business networking and inspiration! As part of the event the Association will recognize outstanding manufacturers from throughout the region for their accomplishments and community contributions during the previous year. The event will also highlight the major expansion of the Association and its services and programs after relocating to a new 12,000 square foot Center of Excellence for Apprenticeship and Training facility in 2021. The Association trained over 2,100 manufacturing employees including 111 registered apprentices in 2021 - supporting the industry with the knowledge they need to operate, hire, & train smarter.

Member businesses are invited to send company news, personnel updates, and special interest stories for consideration in the Chamber Connection newsletter. Please include a high-res photo in JPG or PDF format. News must be submitted by the first Friday of the month for inclusion in the following month’s newsletter.
