2022 Holiday Luncheon

On Friday, December 9th, we held our Annual Holiday Luncheon at the Hanover Country Club. Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, DOCEO. This year's holiday luncheon was the kick-off to our 100 years celebration!

Attendees were joined by keynote speaker, Luke Bernstein, President and CEO of Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. Bernstein shared legislative updates highlighting the PA Chamber’s work on various bipartisan member-centric accomplishments – including the monumental tax reform package that reduced Pennsylvania’s Corporate Net Income Tax rate from 9.99 percent to 4.99 percent.

Bernstein expressed optimism about the ways that the business community can work together in 2023 and beyond with our local chamber partners and other business leaders, Gov.-Elect Shapiro, and lawmakers to promote pro-growth public policies that will set Pennsylvania up for future economic greatness: including continuing, or even expediting, the CNI phase-down and other tax reforms; permitting reform and regulatory reform; infrastructure development, including broadband; and workforce development. The Hanover Chamber has been an active member of the PA Chamber since 1936.

The Chamber recognized Pennsylvania State Representative Stan Saylor, who served in the PA House since 1993. Congressman Lloyd Smucker, State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill, and Pennsylvania State Representative Kate Klunk also addressed members on a variety of topics. State Representatives Torren Ecker, Seth Grove, and Dan Moul also attended.

Blast from the Past!

Each month we will be featuring a blast from the past in our monthly newsletters. This will feature key milestones and successes in our community. Follow along to celebrate all year with us!

This photo was taken from the Hanover Shoe building (Clarks Shoe) across the center square showing what is today the M&T Bank building and Lincoln Investment Planning, Inc. The traffic circle shown in the photo was transformed into the four-way intersection we know today in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Center Square has changed over the years but Downtown Hanover is still a great place to shop, dine, and learn about Hanover’s rich history.

PATTY WIVELL APPOINTED AS

Burkentine Real Estate Group, a multi-state development company based in Hanover, PA is pleased to announce the promotion of Patty Wivell to the new position of VP of Finance and Accounting. Wivell has been with the Burkentine Group for 2 years, rising quickly through the ranks, first being promoted earlier in 2022 to the role of Controller before her most recent advancement to the VP position. She has worked in finance for 27 years and holds a double major in Accounting and Economics. Wivell is the third appointment to the newly created executive leadership team that was established in 2022 to steer company growth.

CFO Scott Thelen sees Wivell’s role as integral to company expansion saying, “Since her arrival, she has been working diligently to fully implement our new systems and create new processes to make us more efficient and effective to ensure we are creating an environment to support our rapid growth strategy.”

“Her experience in the construction industry and awareness has helped shape this organization through thoughtful decisions with all of our departments,” says Co-owner, Bryce Burkentine. We appreciate all her efforts, and we want to congratulate her on this promotion as the first Vice President of the company.”

Fresh Perspective

Wivell also serves as the first female member of the executive team and feels she can bring a unique perspective, especially in the construction industry where women are often underrepresented. “I believe diversity in general strengthens an organization, whether it’s gender, race, or age. The more open we are to the unique perspectives each person brings to the table, the better our overall decisions will be.”

Wivell describes herself as a “slow and

steady wins the race” type of person. “I dig into the details, understand the data, access risk, and create controls. There is a critical need for us to be scalable for the future growth plans of the company. This year we implemented the first companywide operating system. This is a milestone achievement and is a result of every team member helping us get to this next level. Going forward I plan to work with all departments to develop processing and reporting to support each division’s operational responsibilities. Our team members work extremely hard to keep pace with our rapid growth. The advancements we make will provide much-needed relief and support to our team members to create a ‘work smarter not harder’ environment.”

NEW ACCOUNT EXECUTIVES ADDED TO THE GLATFELTER AGENCY TEAM

The Glatfelter Agency (TGA) continues to grow its team of insurance professionals as the retail agency hired two new associates—Heather Bowlin and Dean Packer. Both started in October as Account Executives.

In her role, Heather Bowlin will focus on developing and maintaining new relationships with her Commercial Property and Casualty clients to help them stay better protected and minimize their risk exposures.

Heather obtained a BA Degree from Millersville University with a concentration in Marketing and Management, and brings over 25 years of insurance experience to the agency. Her current designations include CIC, CRM and RPLU, and she is currently working through her CPCU.

In addition to being there when it matters for her clients, Heather also sits on the board of Keystone Human Services and helps run Central PA I Day.

In his role, Dean Packer will aim to develop successful employee benefits programs for his commercial clients to help them strengthen employee well-being

and their businesses. Dean obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Secondary Education from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, and brings over 30 years of combined experience working in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and health insurance industries to TGA.

BARLEY SNYDER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO WORK IN PA

Barley Snyder is pleased to announce that our firm has been named one of the 2022 Best Places to Work in PA by Central Penn Business Journal. The awards are held in partnership with Best Companies Group.

Best Places to Work in PA is an annual honor that identifies and recognizes the most exceptional places of employment in Pennsylvania in three categories: small companies (15-99 employees), medium companies (100-249) and large companies (250 or more). Barley Snyder is featured under the “medium companies” category and is the only law firm included on 2022’s list.

“It is a tremendous honor to be named one of the Best Places to Work in PA. Only 120 businesses throughout the state made the cut, and on top of that, we were the only law firm to be recognized,” said Barley Snyder managing partner, Jeff Lobach. “We are both awed and humbled by the enthusiasm of our professionals’ participating in this survey and sharing favorable impressions and experiences of our firm. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support and dedication of our incredible team.”

"The 2022 Best Places to Work in PA honorees are champions of business. They know that the people in their organizations are the key to their success," said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, senior group publisher of Central Penn Business Journal. "These businesses have proven consistently that they put their employees first. We are pleased to join with the Best Companies Group to honor them."

WELLSPAN HEALTH AND HELIX ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO IMPROVE PATIENT HEALTH OUTCOMES

THROUGH NEW POPULATION GENOMICS PROGRAM

WellSpan Health and Helix, the nation’s leading population genomics and viral surveillance company, announced today a partnership to create a comprehensive population genomics program designed to improve patient healthcare outcomes by integrating genetic insights into clinical care and research.

Patients who are interested can have a DNA sample collected to generate genomic data. Once obtained, with their consent, the results from their sample will be integrated into their electronic medical record (EMR), providing them and their physicians valuable insights into their personal health.

Led by C. Anwar A. Chahal, MD, PhD, Director of the Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases, and David Kann, MD, MPH, Precision Medicine Medical Director, this new program aligns with WellSpan’s vision to reimagine healthcare and improve outcomes to create healthier communities.

“We believe understanding what makes each of our patients unique is key to providing the most personalized, high quality healthcare outcomes possible. Our partnership with Helix will allow us to take a significant step toward making this promise a reality by offering participating patients care and treatment options specific to their genetic data,” said Dr. Anthony Aquilina, Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Officer of WellSpan Health.

Additionally, the genomic data, which removes any information that may directly identify an individual, from consenting participants may help WellSpan better understand the health of its overall population and assist researchers to learn the root causes of certain diseases and the most effective treatments for them.

Participants will have firsthand access to their personal genetic data which can help

providers initially determine a patient’s risk for serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and certain cancers including breast and colorectal cancers.

“Helix’s partnership with WellSpan Health will provide approximately 2,600 physicians and clinicians and their participating patients access to critical information that will help uncover genetic risk more efficiently at the point-of-care to improve health outcomes,” said Helix CEO and cofounder James Lu. “Population genomics will transform health care delivery and outcomes, and Helix and WellSpan are leading the way into a future of more personalized medicine for all.”

The genetic reports made available by this program may allow patients and their health providers to develop precision health care plans to proactively mitigate serious health risk conditions and take a more preventative and individualized approach to their care.

Powered by one of the largest genomic sequencing labs in the world, Helix enables the production of high-quality data at population scale using its proprietary Exome+® assay. Special best practices are used to ensure data privacy. Helix is also the first and only clinical laboratory to receive FDA de novo authorization for a whole exome sequencing platform.

WellSpan will leverage Helix’s genomic platform and unique Sequence Once, Query Often™ model. This allows the opportunity to run future tests that provide new and ongoing health insights without the need to collect additional genetic samples from each patient. In addition to clinically actionable disease screening, Helix will also be providing population genomics support including recruitment and engagement, return of results, and basic and translational research.

WellSpan joins Helix’s leading group of partner health systems that span over 30,000 medical professionals and nearly 500,000 patient participants across the United States. These programs have already found that 1 in 75 participants received a positive result for a serious actionable genetic condition, of which 90

percent would not have been discovered through traditional medical practice.

Participation in this soon-to-be named research program at WellSpan will be completely optional, and at no cost to the participant. Details on how to request participation in the program will be provided to WellSpan communities in early 2023, prior to the official launch of the program.
