Career ready—this is the goal of the Hanover Chamber’s Workforce Development Programs. Noting the need for a talented and competitive workforce, the Chamber set out to educate and develop the future workforce nearly 20 years ago. Our programs have grown to be widely successful, thanks to key partnerships with local schools, businesses, and manufacturers. The Chamber’s Workforce Development Programs allows the area's future workforce to learn about job opportunities in their hometown. Skilled employees are needed in key areas, including welding, industrial maintenance, quality control, physics, electronics, healthcare and more. Bridging the gap between young talent and local businesses is the key to our future.

by the PA Department of Labor and Industry. Since then, several high school students have participated in high school preapprenticeship programs and upon graduation transitioned to paid apprenticeship opportunities with local employers. Since 2017, the Chamber has received approximately $300,000 in grants to purchase equipment for high schools and pay training costs for preapprentices and apprentices. Going forward, the Chamber will continue to make talent development a priority by focusing on long-term strategies for backfilling, upskilling, career pathway development, and succession planning. a model before working with metal material. The challenge was to build a wood-fired Pizza Oven given only a small package of carbon steel materials. Students were required to use at least 75% of the provided materials and ended up using around 90%. The project took 103.5 hours to complete including design, build, and testing time to cook a delicious pizza in 15 minutes. None of these students knew about welding when they entered high school. The Colonial Career and Technology Center (CCTC) offers three (3) approved programs through the state for students beginning their freshman year. Successful completion of these PDE Approved Programs can qualify students for articulated college credits. There are also opportunities for College in the High School credit through HACC in selected courses. An exam through NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) is required for all seniors who are considered to be completers of the program. The three students who are competing in the @skillsusa Welding Fabrication Competition intend to continue in the welding field upon graduating.

Three New Oxford High School students are on their way to the National @skillsusa Welding Fabrication Competition in June. The team recently took first place in the State competition, following a first place District win in January. To complete the first project in January, Alaina Myers (11th grade), Beauen Garman and Camden Elmo (both 12th grade) consulted with tech ed, physics, and food science teachers prior to the build, and worked with Tech Ed teacher Mr. Warner to develop

Heart of Hanover Walking Trail

Businesses in town have some great spring and summer events planned for you. If you enjoy live music and local craft beer, there are events every month kicking off in April!

The Heart of Hanover Trail is a free walking tour of authentic events, heroics, and personalities in historic downtown Hanover. The marker initiative, implemented by Main Street Hanover, provides an illustrated mini-history of the Hanover area. We are excited to share it’s official launch this month. Visitors, and locals alike, can begin the suggested walking route or start wherever they like to learn more about the community of Hanover, PA. Begun as a way to replace old faded markers, the project team took the opportunity to create engaging markers that will be sure to please the historian and those who may be new to learning the history of Hanover. Markers cover such eras of industrial revolution and civil war and Hanover’s significance during that time, as well as topics less covered like the Underground Railroad and famed local writers and artists. While the online component and printed brochures will be available later this year, the project’s stories, pictures and graphics are accessible internationally in digital form on the WitnessingYork.com digital site created and managed by Jim McClure and Jamie Kinsley, with additional analysis of the importance of events described in the storyboards. The Heart of Hanover Trail was funded by Explore York and implemented by Main Street Hanover and executive director Justine Trucksess. Working with a host of historians, native Hanoverian Matthew Jackson served as chief editor. Hanover’s L2 Brands, under the leadership of Brandon Wingert, provided support and design services.

Save the Date to give local! Give Local York – plan to give to Main Street Hanover on Friday, May 6!
