New mediums of materiality allow us to go beyond physical constraints. It also gives a possibility to explore architectural originality.

Therefore, challenging materiality and color between the digital and physical world can be a source for exploring architectural identity. It is almost like a way of creating new knowledge.

It allows unexpected developments in the making process and ultimately gives rise to a newfound joint venture. This thesis aims to offer new insights into different phases that define layers of materiality. By investigating a large degree of unexplored resources, these layers of materiality constitute human experience and produce a divergent set of realities.

Social media craves the pop-up urbanism that transforms architecture from an ordinary experiential space to a space where experience gets magnified. Shareable digital image-making has radically shaken this slow evolution of a place’s relationship to its image.

The structure can also be seen as a roof for the ground plane and works as a bridge to connect different points within the site. By using the materials and textures that are very vivid and eye catching, we are bringing the gap between digital and physical closer. Online becomes visible and it sips into physical world.

SCI-Arc Graduate Thesis

Physical installations with synthetic materiality have to offer something tempting, visually speaking, preferably with that selfie-friendly moment for many “photo-takers”. The pavilion is an elevated colorscape that holds multiple small pop-up interventions. These pop up pods contain vending machines, future mobility charging stations, rentals and etc.

SCI-Arc Graduate Thesis For the streetscape, it can be an urban intervention. This is also one of a part of the well-curated backdrop in the project. Responding to the new medium, we started the design with the main concept, “Automation”. Automation is one future that we can predict and expect. Pop-up furniture and dedicated lanes for automation can be the beginning of the intervention that is easily accessed anytime and anywhere. This is a designing futurity with visibility of new aesthetic forms. Streetscape facilitate the harmonious flow of vehicles-metro, buses, bikes, cars alongside pedestrians.

Everything on the streetscape moves freely. Slow-moving, automated cars make it easier for people to cross the road, and they create new mobility as they walk around. Within the site, mobility is an ever-evolving phenomenon, transforming streets into vibrant avenues of interaction between human and the urban landscape.

This studio will focus on ‘Fragments’ or pieces, as we will begin with the minor architectural elements, namely the Brick. The Brick is a fragment of architecture; it carries such a rich and profound history and therefore represents a powerful potential for space, material, and landscape. We will research its history, advance it to its future, and find design innovations that will spring from this ancient fragment.

Notation diagrams that will serve as the base for walls

There are six types of bricks. Some seems more generic while others are uniquely designed. Because our notations have many curved shapes, we cast various types of circular bricks using resin. With resin, we were able to explore variety of colors and textures. Once we have fabricated several bricks, we created a wall detail. This detail carried all the conceptual qualities of the project. In order to follow the notation, we made several attempts on assembly.

Brick’s encounter with a different material

Lighting, See Through, Transparency Plastic bricks and glass bricks that have transparency have light-transmitting properties. This creates a completely different atmosphere from the traditional brick. A physical model based on the study of how bricks located at corners should switch and stack up naturally when two walls are attached.

This project is a work of reinterpreting the boundary through a retaining wall that is divided into a boundary. 'Boundary' is where the difference is revealed in many ways. The problem comes from recognizing boundaries as barriers. What makes boundaries a barrier is discrimination. Discrimination arises from disconnection from each other. So, I eliminate the disconnect through communication and create a new boundary of meaning, not boundary.

The boundaries are completely broken, using light and color. It is desirable to overwrite the colors analyzed based on the existing ground color, and they are integrated with each other and with the surrounding secdul. In addition, the color changes from moment to moment due to some light. This means that people will be displayed differently over time, depending on where they are located. As a result, the boundaries are collapsing more actively.

This project has long been a work to create a cinematic space through reinterpretation of a site with a historical trend of film. The flow that has been stagnant for several decades induces a new flow through the architectural element of the square. The irregular, independent, and autonomous features of the squares are projected onto the film museum. Thus, visitors can feel the different atmosphere in this space. Also, cinematic techniques, such as long take, flashback, montage, dissolve, etc., can be a way of putting the chunks together.

Each space has its own cinematic technique. From black-and-white movies to modern digital movies, you can experience the process of film development as a space. Also, because these spaces are connected to each other and continue to flow, endless circulation is created.

In addition, as science progressed, it was necessary to consider the future role of city employees from the perspective that urbanization was progressing throughout the world. Korea has been a national religion for a long time, but as time goes by, it has embraced a variety of religions, and now lives in coexistence with each other. In my opinion, a city temple should have this co-existence. We need a space where we can embrace all religions, not a specific religion.

Mass diagram through topological ambiguity

This diagram shows ambiguous by combining the topological aspects of temple architecture in the East and the West. By accepting similarities and adding elements that were not there to the East and the West, each religion has its own symbolism, but one particular religion is not visible. In addition, it is planning to build temples for all people, not just for one religion that everyone can use naturally. Through this, people search for spaces that are familiar to them and find their own god.

This project challenges the nature and narrative of a mix-used building. Representing and building a community, the design sets up a creative environment giving the opportunity for individuals to live in a collaborative space where their contemporary art pieces may be displayed at the heart of the building. The designated program was adapted with the intention of catering to different needs at each level, ranging from housing, commercial, recreational, to a variation of work spaces.

The dominant structural columns open up the building in unexpected moments through elevation in order to create an open, relaxed ambience. In addition to incorporating local vegetation, forming sustainable habitats for local animal species. The vegetation is embodied at the open spaces and facade by interlocking and weaving throughout the structure giving life to the design.

Consisted of steel beam structure, the major feature of our building’s is roof. The building is made of steel from column to roof structure, and it join each other as an intersection point.

Overall Chunk and Tectonic Breakdown The most important thing in this building is the roof layer. While maintaining the existing main structure, we added new layers to change. On the roof, we focused on the wood strips used in kengo kuma’s “The darling exchange”.

“alter|Nature” explores the visual phenomenon of codependency of physical, digital, and biological in bio-diverse environments. Atoms, Bits, and Genes will redefine objects in the Anthropocene area in terms of the arrangement of objects and the agreement of parts. Spatial organizations and power structures collapse in a single instance, where one defines the other and vice versa.

SCI-Arc Visual Studies

The class will generate arrangements with the objects around spherical volumes. Through the use of scripts and procedural design, each student will create assemblies of light, color, mechanical and random movements in Unreal Engine. The simulated ecologies are represented with stills and constructed perspectives.

The compositions of arrangement are reorganized as landscapes surrounding the generated ecology.

The material is finely adjusted in color and light to suit the overall atmosphere.

Graduated colors and materials created a more magical nature.
