Design Process
Here, you can see a series of sketches outlining the way that my design process typically works. I start with concept ideation and research, is there something that we can pull from to drive inspiration? Natural forms, vernacular methods, environmental elements? Once a few of these have been pulled, ideation and testing to see how this could be actualised within our site, and then eventually, through a process of repetition and elimination, the strongest and most feasible concept moves forward to be developed and detailed. If time allows, more than one concept can be pushed and considered simultaneously to present design options.

Mosques act as a public symbol, signifying the presence of muslims in the area. The appropriate design of mosques can impact the way that their users are percieved. These structures are meant as permanent ones that preserve an identity, a culture, and can be linked to social

CONTRIBUTIONS: Ideated and came up with the Mangrove concept for the installation, produced everything from the hand sketches up until the final detailed drawings. Oversaw construction and was on site during Design Week representing the company and doing guided tours of the installation for VIP guests.
Once Upon A Forest
Once Upon A Forest was designed as part of Dubai Design Week 2022, and with an overarching theme of sustainability, our intention was to celebrate the UAE’s efforts to preserve and grow natural Mangrove reserves. The installation was designed to be a call to action, inviting intrigue with its forest inspired forms, and then immersing visitors further into the forest with sounds and screens displaying inspiring visuals of the stories of the Mangroves in the UAE. The forms where inspired by the densities and proportions of mangrove trees themselves, creating pockets of recluse amidst a bustling design week.
LOCATION WITHIN SITE
A centrally located pavillion meant for wind considerations but also the glare of 4 glass buildings, creating the need for shading structures that break up the wind flow.
CONTRIBUTIONS: Space planning and adjacencies, creating all floor layouts and key explanatory diagrams for the project. Drove the narrative of the reimagined Saudi office space as one inspired by their hospitality and sense of space. Coordination with client and visualisation consultants, oversaw the creation of the final package, submitted books, and final video submissions.

Iterations & Space Planning
(Process sketches - combined effort; myself and the design team)
The design process consisted of a series of negotiations with neighboring buildings, an old heritage building in the middle of the site, and the requirements of the program to create accessible public realms with a few private entyways. The ideation stage consisted of rounds of iterations whereby each element was considered and reconsidered till the final form emerged. An amalgamation of volumes that mimics the broken nature of the surrounding sites, the tight streets created between buildings continued throughout our site to act as a natural extension of the existing public realm. We were able to create pockets that encapsulated our program and allowed for moments of provacy in a public space and the flexibility to shuffle between the two.
CONTRIBUTIONS: Masterplan concept and key activation design + analysis and explanatory diagrams for the project. Drove the narrative of the Cultural and Arts activations and connection to Abha. Coordination with client and visualisation consultants, oversaw the creation of the final package, submitted books, and final video submissions. Worked through pre-concept competition and post-win concept design submissions including villa planning and layouts.
The site offers unique topographical properties and view points, with a unique waterfront at the lowest points of the site. The zoning was leveraged to make use of those views, leaving the cultural canyon, or the gem of the project in the center, creating a lively spine that connects this masterplan to the heart of Abha’s Jaqaranda Street. With learnings from key critical heritage areas within Abha, this masterplan was inspired by the culture of local souqs, the compositions of local architecture and the craftsmanship of local artists.

CONTRIBUTIONS: Masterplan concept and key activation design + analysis and explanatory diagrams for the project. Drove the narrative of the reimagined palace as a house of culture, a tribute to its preceding inhabitants, and a place for great minds to meet. Was responsible for landscape, lighting, and interior design coordination as well as structural and mechanical consultations. Oversaw the completion and personally submitted all final documents and presented weekly progress to the client as well as the final presentation to key stakeholders and official representatives of the Kingdom.
Existing palace analysis was conducted to understand the makeup of each individual space, the walls that could or couldn’t be altered, as well as the character that we could pull from the existing architecture to create a new, but rooted interpretation of the palace.

This project was a renovation of an existing architectural piece designed to embody the spirit of Saudi as well as Japan in the Metabolist age, it was a symbol of the Kingdom’s turn towards modernity and a deep analysis took place in order to fully understand the metabolist and islamic principles that went into the original design. The resulting masterplan had to be a sensitive, natural extension of the existing. Using islamic patterns and geomtric proportions, as well as the metabolist idea of growth to inspire flexible MICE spaces as well as flexible open spaces on site.
INTENTION: Bringing the Maggie’s care center concept to Dubai. A place where cancer care is not only scientific but also empathetic. Creating a space where patients feel as though they are part of a community. Our Maggie’s center was focused on the idea of catering for all senses and using natural daylight and wind, leveraging the 6 months of good weather in the region. The senses are actualised through garden therapy points, aromatherapy, visual therapy, sound therapy, etc. The gardens are in pocket courtyards that can open up to allow for an aeration of the entire building in the cooler months of the year. A parametric roof system was created to bring in cool air (inspired by wind towers) and provide shade.
INTENTION: Extending existing metro lines to pass through industrial areas, these metro lines can also begin to carry waste and water in order to move materials around sites and allow for easier recycling. The metro is the first part of the proposal, the second part involves adding green spaces at each metro stop in the industrial city to create public parks and functions for the users of the area. This will promote social, economic and environmental benefits to the area. These green spaces are coupled with vehicular truck parks inspired by the existing truck parks found across the UAE to cater for employees of industrial transportation, allowing for a social activation of this industrial area.

INTENTION: Interested in the ebenflow of culture and ritual, the way in which people use a mosque, the ritual of the walk towards it and the difference between the sacred and the profane that is achieved in that time. The way that modern day mosques in Manchester are infilled whenever they are given the opportunity to exist, instead of being standalone symbols of identity that celebrate the ritual of prayer. Looking at the mosque as less of an icon or a symbol, but rather a facilitator of ritual, with spaces and transitional realms that are concious of its users. There is also an educational element, as well as a political one, that comes into play because of the location in a Christian country.

The mosque was designed as a series of spaces that lead up to the final moment of prayer. The entry from the mosque is unique due to the site, instead of entering on the qibla, users enter through the sides and find the qibla at the end of their path. Care is taken in terms of the proportions of spaces, the difference between spaces that stay wet and those that stay dry. In wet spaces, an analysis of prayer facilities was conducted to understand the ergonomic qualities needed to achieve a successful ablution area. The spacing of the mosque follows an inherent geometry learnt from islamic architecture, with clear rows outlined into the carpets to distribute the people praying, with peripheral paths for people to join or leave the queues without disrupting others.
