Workplace

Landor, a cutting-edge graphic and branding design firm is expanding to Downtown Austin, Texas. The goal of this space was to create a dynamic and innovative work environment for Landor. This engaging and collaborative workspace will pull from the Art Deco style. The use of funky patterns, vibrant colors, and geometric shapes will inspire creativity and productivity. This office space will not only have big collaborative spaces for working in teams, but it will also have more private spaces for individual work. With a variety of different spaces, movable furniture, and daylight Landor will be the place where everyone wants to work.

Sustainability Location: Austin,Texas

Austin, Texas is located in south-central Texas on the north bank of the Colorado River and is bounded by Ladybird Lake to the south. Downtown Austin is the central business district of Austin. Austin,Texas was recently voted the number one place to live in America for the third year in a row, based off of affordability, job prospects and the quality of life.

Solar Panels

Solar panels is one of the sustainable resources that will be used in this design. Solar panels collect clean renewable energy in the form of sunlight and covert that light into electricity to be used to provide power to the building.

Acoustical Panels

Acoustical panels are functional art that connect the creativity of the workspace with the team working in it. These acoustical panels will help absorb noise and reduce reverberation and echo in the work space. This will create a more productive work environment.

Design Style:Art Deco

Art deco originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. Architectural design elements include; mosaic tile, geometric shapes, vibrant colors and funky patterns. In my design I plan to use these elements to create an engaging work environment.

Sensory Integration Information

Sensory integration spaces are crucial when designing for someone on the spectrum. Multisensory Environments provide a wide variety of controlled sensory simulators perfect for people with Autism and other special needs. They can help enhance concentration, attention and alertness in autistic people who are easily distracted.

ASD Design Needs

Colors: Most items in the room should be of calming muter colors such as pastels. Patterned floors can be confusing to people with ASD to walk on so they should be avoided as well

Lighting: Fluroescent liting can be too bright and distancing for thise with ASD so a dimly lit area is preferable.

Noise: Areas should be low volume with an emphasis on keeping wall padding and carpets throughout

Smells: Aroma diffusers are very successful in calming someone with ASD.

Safety: People with ASD have trouble sensing danger around them so taking extra precautions is neccessary.

7 Principles of Universal Design

1. Equitable Use

2. Flexibility in Use

3. Simple and Intuitive Use

4. Perceptible Information

5. Tolerance for Error

6. Low Physical Effort

7. Appropriate Size and Space for Approach and Use

The Universal design project required us to design a residential apartment located in an assisted living complex. We used all seven principles of universal design in this project.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Design Concept

Redfish Lake Community is located in Stanley, Idaho, on Redfish Lake with medicare options of independent living,full-time care, and memory care. Our community offers an active lifestyle, including canoeing, fishing and adventure walks. Our client’s home embodies universal design principles; for example, flexibility in use is applied in the living room with various seating options allowing comfortability. Tolerance for error is implemented in the bathroom by using decorative and functional grab bars. Our clients home in the community will be designed in an urban modern aesthetic, blending elements of contemporary modern and industrial design.

Relationship Diagram

Location: Redfish Lake,Idaho

Redfish Lake is a glacier carved lake located in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountain Range in Idaho. The lake has crystal clear water and sandy beaches, with a stunning backdrop of jagged mountain peaks. This provides a beautiful view for the senior residents.

Client Profile

• The clients are a couple aging around 60 years old

• The wife works as a consultant and needs a work space in the home

• The husband will be in a wheelchair in approximately 5-10 years

• They have two children with spouses and a total of 4 grandchildren that visit but they do not all visit at the same time

• 4 grandchildren ages are: 4,7,7,10

Mixed Use Spaces

Fresh Essentials

Fresh Essentials is a farmers market that is open every weekend. All the food sold at the farmers market will be from the rooftop garden. Unlike supermarket shelves that are stocked with food that traveled for weeks, farmer’s markets have fresh food. Locally grown food is also picked at peak ripeness supplying the juiciest tomatoes and the sweetest berries. Farmer’s markets also provide the tenants and customers easy access to health foods to help to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Peace of Mind

Peace of Mind is a Yoga studio that will be accessible to the tenants and customers. Through slow movements and deep breathing yoga increases blood flow and creates mental clarity and calmness. The yoga studio will offer small classes to promote relaxation. Sining up for classes can be done at the front desk or on the website.

Community Garden

The Community Garden will be located on the rooftop of the building, This garden will supply the cafe and farmers market. Gardening supplies are available for tenants to use. There is a schedule to write what date and time the plants were last watered. There will also be a farmer that will be in charge of checking in on the plants as well.

Simply Blended

Simply Blended is a cafe that primarily sells smoothies but also sells smoothie bowls and wraps. Some of the ingredients will come from the roof top garden such as fruits and vegetables. The cafe will be available for all tenants and for customers as well. Simply Blended will be open Sun-Sat from 7am to 2pm.

Wheels Up!

Wheels Up is a bike service shop located on the ground floor. This shop offers bike services as well as sells and rents bikes out to the community. There will be bike parking located out side and storage lockers located inside for helmets and other accessories. There are numerous bike paths around the site and having this shop will encourage biking instead of driving. Bicycling not only is great for the environment but it is also great for our health.

Sustainable Strategies

Strategy 1: Active Lifestyle

Strategy 2: Direct Experience of Nature

Strategy 3: Indirect Experience of Nature

Strategy 4: Community Access and Engagement

Strategy 5: Health and Well-Being

By incorporating these 5 sustainable strategies into design I have created a sense of community with numerous places to gather, play games, exercise and socialize. Active lifestyle and health are prominent in the yoga studio, bike shop and farmers market. Experiences of nature can be found throughout the whole mixed use floor.
