Sheffield Plaza Redesign
Hannah Bernstein | Spring 2024 | LSC 234 | University of Sheffield

The goal throughout the design has been an open, inviting, easy to access space that both allows quick transit with easy wayfinding to reach the railway station and a conscious slowing of a casual visitor to enjoy the space. There are ample places for sitting and socializing, and area for a food truck to park. The naturalized planting areas are traversed by boardwalks to allow for landform transitions and a unique visitor experience.

The plaza area incorporates local elements, such as the Yorkstone paving. The light fixtures are tree-shaped, adding an element of whimsy. The planters have bases that are concrete with glass bottles embedded in them, adding a playful touch. The path connects through to the railway station, and it’s styled with wooden planks, flush with the ground, and embedded metal strips to suggest a railway.

The People Forest
Hannah Bernstein & Victoria Ondrus | Spring 2023 | LA 234 | Professor Anna Valderrama
The People Forest creates a place that, while mimicking a natural landscape with topography and trees, is completely manmade. While being a sensorally rich environment, it forces visitors to think about what a world complete denuded of natural landscapes would be like.

Open Space: A Permaculture Solution
Hannah Bernstein | Fall 2022 | LA 233 | Professor Stephen Sears

This project focuses on transforming a derelict site in the middle of Urbana into a site that is a resource for the community, with special focus on the Boneyard Creek, which flows through the site. This site provides opportunities for education, while providing an avenue of income for some of the less advantaged residents of the area, and connections between area restaurants, residents, and the site.

Team Water Buffalo: West Champaign Improved Plan
335 | Professor Elizabeth Scott

This project takes a blighted area of west Champaign, IL, and transforms it into a vibrant, ecological community, that is interesting, enjoyable and safe for pedestrians and cyclists, comfortable and inviting for those who live and work there, and that allows easy access to healthy natural areas, water resources, and places to play.
