PERSONAL DESIGN

STATEMENT Finding a purpose and a passion for what I do has always been the number one motivation for me.

Landscape architecture incorporates elements from every aspect of life that I am passionate about: people, art, and the Earth.

I have the freedom to design beautiful and inspiring landscapes while also taking into consideration people and planet.

I want to focus on creating places that will bring community together, that are beautiful and thoughtfully planned, and ultimately I want to design places that evoke emotion in the individuals that experience the space.

As a landscape architect, I have a duty to the people around me and the Earth to foster love and care for the living world around us and to design sustainable and dynamic landscapes for now and for future generations.

SITE AND CONTEXT This site is situated on the brink of Downtown Athens and the University of Georgia campus. Upon researching the history of the site, I found that this space used to be vastly populated with trees and wildlife along with a spring that the city of Athens was originally designed around.

Due to this location being surrounded by parking lots and residential buildings along with public transport routes, this site observes a lot of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. In my design I wanted to design a site that serves as a scaled-up pathway for the people that would walk through this site en-route to their respective destinations.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT I used the past to inform my design with this site by focusing on restoring green space to this part of downtown Athens which is mostly paving and concrete/brick structures.

The space that I envisioned was a response to a need that I saw within the downtown Athens landscape for an exhilarating and lively green space for the Athens and UGA communities.

INITIAL DESIGN CONCEPT This concept was my first rendering of a potential design which was an abstraction of the wings of a butterfly.

While imagining how this site looked like before the construction of physical buildings, I envisioned lots of wildlife swarming the area and took that vision and created a design for the site with the primary pathways taking on the role of what the veins would be on a butterfly wing.

SOMETHING LOST, SOMETHING FOUND...

My second design option was based off of a piece of bark I found on the site. I decided to create designs that would incorporate terraced steps that resembled the different layers of bark that existed within the piece I found. A major change from my initial concept was forming larger pathways to serve as corridors for visitors of this space.

POLLINATOR’S PARADISE With the development of the downtown Athens area and the expansion of UGA, there has been an incredible loss of biodiversity and natural habitat which can have detrimental effects for the living community. This site also serves as a station for pollinators to come and recharge.

This was reinforced by choosing regionally appropriate, pollinator-friendly, and visually appealing plantings such as Eastern Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa), and White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba).

The design for the Yardley Hotel was inspired by the tropics of Puerto Rico.

Creating a lush landscape filled with tropical plantings with a peaceful and relaxing ambience for the patrons of this hotel was the goal.

SITE AND CONTEXT

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Design development for this project mainly focused on circulation of cars throughout the site without interfering with the walkability of the site. Establishing where the roads were and placing the housing lots prior to making further design decisions was especially important due to the narrow nature of this site. After the road layout, I was then able to consider where the community might congregate and then created green spaces in those areas.

HOUSING TYPOLOGY: CHARLESTON STYLE ROW HOUSE For the housing typology, I took inspiration from the shotgun style houses in Charleston, SC. These houses have a major emphasis on the porch feature which would foster interactions with neighbors and also encourage residents to go outside.

Presence Park is a community built to offer a sense of well-being and serenity that fosters community interaction and health. This community means to offer an escape from the toils of everyday life and serve as a haven for it’s residents with ample green spaces and walkable trails.

Park area that only residents of this space can access, encourages community and activity.

SITE AND CONTEXT The North Oconee River Greenway is a 3 mile long, multi-use, paved trail that runs along the North Oconee River in Athens, Georgia.

My team was assigned a section of the Greenway that we focused on for the duration of a semester. The Easley Mill trailhead begins East of Downtown Athens across from Dudley Park on Oconee St. and stretches ~1500 ft. South before stopping at a patch of wood with an unfinished trail.

My team and I visited this site to gather data on native plant and animal species, the ways people utilize the site, the way stormwater flows throughout the site, and other critical factors that would help to organize our plan for ecological restoration of this site.

My role in this project was to gather information and research the site along with producing the graphics that we showed to the city officials to visualize our conceptual design.

Our goal for the remediation of this trailhead was to reinforce and protect the ecosystem services that this site provides, especially when considering it’s important function of regulating the water quality of the North Oconee River and providing a suitable future habitat for the native plant and animal species while also taking into consideration it’s value for the humans that interact with this trail.

- facilitate stormwater infiltration and groundwater recharge - reduce non-point pollution

VEGETATION RECOMMENDATIONS

Invasive plants have taken over control of this section of the greenway and will continue to choke out native species and understory planting. We recommended ruderal species to fill the gaps in the ground plane and promote native forest succession. Remediation strategies must include continual treatment and attention. Introducing more native plantings will create an aesthetically pleasing environment with additional educational opportunities for the public.

- Carex pensylvanica can be used as a groundcover to prevent invasives from coming up between gaps in plants.

- Solidago spp. ruderal species that have allelopathic qualities to prevent growth of plants of nearby plants.

- Pinus palustris is an endangered species suitable in large areas of invasive removal to stabilize soil.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAMMING In terms of non ecological design goals for the site, there are opportunities to add educational content concerning the site’s ecology-highlighting habitat information, local plant and animal species, as well as the intent and function of the bat boxes installed near the southernmost boardwalk.

There was also the possibility to beautify and clear the river overlooks. There are two constructed boardwalks that split off the paved trail and bring visitors closer to the water's edge, suspending them over the riverbank. However, the views from the boardwalk furthest from the trailhead are currently obstructed by thick underbrush and young invasive tree species. The bat boxes built above a maintained lawn could be visually improved by introducing a pollinator garden, which would serve as an effective habitat for native species, but also would add the aesthetic benefit of concealing the concrete foundations and underside of the boardwalk. Combining seating with this renewed viewshed would be an effective way to draw visitors towards the proposed educational signage and interact with the landscape more.
