DESIGN NARRATIVE The goal is to design a new West Coast headquarters for the National Geographic Society, a global nonprofit organization committed to exploring and protecting our planet. The project will be located in an existing building in the historic Presidio district of San Francisco, California. The first floor is intended for visitors. The first floor contains a lobby, exhibition center, cafe, retail center, public bathrooms, a loading dock, and a ticket and coat check room.The

second floor is reserved for office spaces.

The animals are represented in the space by either their physical form, which influences architectural features, their color/skin/feathers, which will be seen in material choice, their living patterns, such as the wolf, or their habitual environment.

DESIGN NARRATIVE IAD340 was a Subaru sponsored collaboration course.

The class had an assrtment of majors ranging from graphic design to industrial design. During the first class the students were told to redesign Subaru for 2030. We were then handed a large stack of sticky notes and was instructed to individually brainstorm ideas. After 20 minutes we were told to stick the post-it notes to the class wall and then rotate around the room. After doing so, we sought out the individuals who had similar ideas to our own. These people eventually became our teammates.

Throughout the span of the semester I had many jobs. I am pleased to say that I played a large role in developing our team concept, became one of the team leaders and presented our group project to the executive board of Subaru. However, none of this would not have been possible without the help of Dominique Seva’aetasi. (So I would like to give her a huge shoutout) In addition to the rolls mentioned above, I also had one more important job. This is what will be presented in the following pages. In addition to the items listed above, I also designed a residential home. It’s intention was to encompasses the persona of a loyal Subaru customer.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The two tiered 780 square foot “tiny house” was created for our fictional Subaru customer, Dave He is a single man in his late twenties who works as a graphic designer. He enjoys everything to do with nature including, biking, camping and rock climbing.

Dave is also very social and from time to time, he likes to host small friendly gatherings at his home.

The concept of the home was inspired by Dave and the Subaru brand itself. Our group saw 2030 Subaru as a transparent, outdoor and nomadic brand. So the goal for the house was to create a dwelling and environment that reflected these values. This can be seen in the floor plan and space layout. The home is embedded into one of Eugene’s many hills. The

large quantity of windows and open floor plan create a breathable environment. Furthermore, the sliding glass doors located on either side of the kitchen and living room fully open from wall to wall and further blur the boundary line between nature and the home. The abundant and strategic use of glass best captures Subaru’ s 2030 transparent and nature driven ideals. However, this openness is mindfully partnered with the surrounding wooded area and provides adequate privacy.

PROJECT SUMMARY The project is a three story building located at 13 Wood Street, San Francisco. The goal is to convert the first two floors of the building into low-income housing and the first floor is required to be ADA accessible. The third floor is home to the tenant of the building. The first floor is a single unit apartment that directly connects to the garage. The secong floor is comprised of two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. The thrid floor is designed to have a formal at home office and also has three bedrooms
