hello! I am hannah hartsough, a fourth-year architecture major and spanish minor at northeastern university. originally from east hampton, new york, I’ve been deeply influenced by the emphasis on the natural environment in my hometown. this perspective has shaped my understanding of design, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between landscape and people. in my work, I strive to create spaces that not only serve functional needs but also enhance the user experience, contribute positively to the environment, and integrate seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, ensuring a harmonious and holistic experience for occupants and nature alike

my design team and I reimagined the imaculada chapel in portugal through an innovative upcycling strategy, deconstructing the case study and adapting each of its pieces to create an entirely new structure in a new location. our project integrates respectfully with the historic xvi century cathedral of segovia, an unesco world heritage site, our concept blends tradition with contemporary architectural principles. by repurposing materials and concepts, we harmonize the old and the new, enriching both structures' narratives by introducing a seamless architectural intervention that elongated the south-facing "doors of forgiveness," symbolically bridging interior and exterior spaces. adapting the cathedral's vaulted ceilings created spatial continuity, enhancing the visitor experience while honoring the sanctity of the heritage site 1:8 1:50

10 street type mapping

northeastern university fall 2024

prof. anthony averbeck boston, ma

for our studio assignment, we were tasked with conducting an urban study of our site and its surrounding area, with my focus being on street types. my goal was to analyze the connectivity and accessibility of streets for both automobile and pedestrian-scale transportation. during my site visit,

observed a range of street types — one-ways, dead-ends, two-way streets with integrated or separated bike paths — which I categorized and mapped using a reductive approach to emphasize key features like dead-ends and bike lanes. created case studies of four street types, each representing di erent levels of connectivity, and synthesized this information to highlight how road design influences movement. By overlaying color-coded data on automobile and bike accessibility, I demonstrated the challenges and opportunities for improved connectivity in the area, especially for cyclists.

chinatown pavillion

northeastern university fall 2022

prof. judith rodriguez boston, ma

to fully explore the social function of a public library, it was vital to first explore one of the core values of a library - a public restroom. this small pavillion doubles as a neighborhood rest stop, acting as a continuation of the mary soo hoo plaza just steps away. to increase access and further the existing public space and art installations on the greenway, the pavillion implements local art opportunities by providing blank canvases for murals, a key element of public spaces in chinatown, along the walls of the restrooms as well as including vibrant seating inspired cheryl wing-zi wong’s”year of the tiger” installation on the neighboring site.

inspired by a past studio art teacher who ran a non-profit mural company with her twin sister, this home splits into two, each with its own garage, dining and living room, main bedroom with a mezzanine floor, and individual studio

spaces with outdoor studio access. the various program volumes overlap to create cores, acting as serving spaces including bathrooms, pantries, and mudrooms. the two homes are connected by an outdoor balcony and central courtyard, with fully blank walls for mural experimentation. the home-studio constitutes a raumplan, with each volume on its own level, taking into account topographical di erences while also providing verticality di erences depending on the program.
