As we move forward to the new FY 2024-2025, we would like to acknowledge and appreciate the services of the outgoing UAP-BC Chapter set of officers under the leadership of the energetic Ar. Reynold Orogo. His leadership for two terms, spanning FY 2022-2023 and FY 2023-2024, was marked by exceptional membership engagement and the introduction of several successful and relevant activities. Membership grew significantly. Hats off to the previous UAP British Columbia Chapter leadership.

Today, we are now entering a new season for our organization, where we welcome the new set of officers with hope and aspirations to carry out their assigned tasks. With fresh mandates and consistent membership supports to them, these officers, composed of young and dedicated men and women, will undoubtedly fulfill and perform their duties and responsibilities to the best of their abilities.

Under the new leadership headed by Ar. Lyn Bernabe-Ramos, we anticipate a host of innovative programs aimed at enhancing professional and career development. The introduction of cutting-edge workshops on sustainable design, technological integration in architecture, and green building practices will equip our members with the tools they need to stay ahead in the ever-evolving architectural landscape. These initiatives align with our goal of ensuring continuous professional growth for all our members.

Additionally, the new team plans to establish stronger employment and networking opportunities through regular meet-ups and collaborative projects with industry stakeholders. By building a robust network, we aim to create more job opportunities and foster connections that can lead to fruitful professional relationships. This will help in nurturing a supportive and resourceful professional community within our chapter.

Furthermore, the new leadership has expressed a commitment to expanding our social, fellowship, and community involvement. By participating in global conferences and hosting symposiums, we aim to showcase the talents and expertise of our members on a broader stage, elevating the profile of the UAP British Columbia Chapter. These activities will not only bring fresh perspectives and opportunities to our members but also ensure that our chapter remains a strong, dynamic and influential force in the field of architecture. Truly we are Moving Forward, One UAP-BC! Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Filipino!

FBrief History on the Founding of UAP

ilipino architects based in the province of British Columbia were so lucky to have been given the opportunity to connect with the national organization of Philippine architects with the creation of the United Architects of the Philippines British Columbia Chapter ( UAPBC ). So much has been said about its beginning back in 2011 but what about its mother organization, United Architects of the Philippines? On the occasion of its forthcoming 50th Anniversary next year 2025, let us briefly go back in time and dwell on how this national organization of Filipino architects came about.

During the Spanish times, there were no schools of architecture in the Philippines. The closest a Filipino could aspire to the title of an architect was to be a Maestro de Obra ( Master of Work ) . The first school of Maestro de Obra was founded by the Spanish government: the Escuela Practica y Professional de Artes Oficios de Manila ( Arts Professional and Practical School of Manila ) where it produced the first Filipino graduates. The first Filipino architect, Felix Roxas Y Arroyo was employed as Municipal Architect of Manila.

Fast forward to the American occupation in 1902, the first organization of architects was formed which eventually resulted in the founding of architectural profession in the Philippines in 1921 by the virtue of Philippine Assembly Act No. 2985. This

law likewise created separate board of examiners for architects and civil engineers. It also allowed the creation of formal organizations of architects which evolved into the creation of the Philippine Institute of Architects after the second world war in 1945. In 1949, the laws which separate the Architects from the Engineers were passed as Republic Acts 544 for Engineers and 545 (which has been subsequently repealed by RA 9266 ) for Architects. The following years saw the creation of other architects groups such as the LPA ( League of Philippine Architects ) and APGA ( Association of Philippine Government Architects). It did not take long before the national presidents of these three professional organizations gathered and initiated formal talks of unification starting in the joint fellowship in 1969 culminating into a significant event in December 12,1974 when the ad hoc committee which was formed, completed the task of formulating the constitution and by-laws. The Boards of the three founding organizations approved the constitution and by-laws of the newly minted organization which would then be known as the United Architects of the Philippines.

The creation of UAP was aimed to unify the fragmented architectural associations existing at that time such as the League of Philippine Architects ( LPA ), the Philippine Institute of Architects ( PIA ) and the Association of Philippine Government Architects ( APGA ).

Photo/image

The vision officially materialized on March 26, 1975 when UAP was incorporated and registered with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC ) under registration no.60782. On May 12, 1975, the UAP was granted Certificate No. 001, becoming the first professional organization to be accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission. The interim board was then headed by Architect Norberto Nuke as president after which on December 12, 1975, the UAP elected the First regular Board of Directors headed by Architect Jose Herrera as President, the first UAP National President to serve in such capacity.

The UAP was established as the integrated and accredited professional organization for architects in the Philippines. After the passage of the Republic Act 9266, or the Architecture Act of 2004, UAP applied as the Integrated Organization of Professional Architects(IAPOA) to the Professional Regulation Commission on May 19, 2014.

VISIONARY LEADERS

Without putting too much details on the personalities and circumstances involved, the unification process was initiated by the Filipino architects themselves who recognized the need for a single cohesive organization to represent the profession and address its concerns more effectively. The UAP was formed under Presidential Decree No.223 issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos which established the Professional Regulation Commission ( PRC ) and mandated the integration of various architectural organizations into one.

The UAP has been dedicated to promoting the highest standard of ethical conduct, professional practice, and continuing education among its members. The organization also plays a very significant role in advocating for policies and regulations that support the architectural profession and built environment in the Philippines. It has received numerous awards such as the International Achievement Award 2019 by Europe Business

Assembly ( EBA ) in United Kingdom as well as the highlyacclaimed PRC’s Most Outstanding Accredited Professional Organization (APO) winning the most awards 12 times ( 2002, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 ) with the latest one in FY 2023-2024. Since its founding in 1975, the United Architects of the Philippine has had a total of 30 National Presidents with Architect Donato Magcale as the current National President for FY 2024-2025. The United Architects of the Philippines today has grown by leaps and bounds with various chapters within their respective areas both locally and oversea catering to the needs of Filipino Architects worldwide. It has a current roster of membership numbering more than 50,000 which is almost all of the registered architects under PRC ( Professional Regulation Commission ).

And on the occasion of UAP-BC Chapter 13th Anniversary Celebration and Induction of new Board of Officers FY 2024-25 and Members with its theme Future Progressive One Strong UAP and UAP’s forthcoming 50th Anniversary in 2025, UAP-BC Chapter congratulates its mother organization for its important milestone. More power and many more years of glorious achievements !

This council is a proof to the organization’s commitment to utilize its members’ collective expertise to guide and support current leadership and ensure the chapter’s continued growth and success.

The UAP-BC Chapter has passed a Board Resolution creating a structured platform that addresses issues at both the District and National levels. This platform will also facilitate cooperation with other Filipino-Canadian organizations, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. The Council of Elders will play a pivotal role in providing guidance and assistance to the current Chapter President and Board Members, drawing from their wealth of experience to offer strategic counsel on the chapter’s operations, activities, and initiatives.

Eligible candidates must be bona fide members of UAPBC in good standing, residing in British Columbia, Canada. Additionally, individuals who have served as Chapter President or retired Filipino architects who have shown remarkable expertise and dedication to the field are eligible to join this esteemed council. As of press time, the UAP BC leadership has listed only past chapter presidents as members of the Council.

Editor’s Note:

Before the end of the previous fiscal year, the UAP-BC leadership announced a call for members to submit a theme for the chapter’s 13th Anniversary celebration. The theme was required to embody the chapter’s vision and mission while reflecting its role in advocating for architecture across present and future generations. Ar. Edna Avenido-Lim’s entry was selected as the winning theme. Here is her rationale:

The Rationale Behind our Chapter Theme

• The chapter is committed to helping everyone explore new and greater opportunities for both the profession and the professionals.

• We strive to remain resilient in the face of challenges and to embrace changes that enhance our careers and perspectives on life.

• With 13 years of history, the chapter is focused on moving forward together, aiming to improve ourselves, advance the profession, and serve our community and fellow countrymen.

Annual Picnic

“What a perfect day for the UAPBC summer picnic! Nice weather, a lovely place, lots of food, and warm company!”

On July 13, 2024, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) BC Chapter held its muchanticipated Annual Picnic, drawing a strong turnout from its members. The event was blessed with perfect weather, providing a lovely setting at a picturesque park in Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam, B.C., where members gathered to enjoy a day of fun, fellowship, and shared stories. The warmth of the community was so overwhelming as members connected over delicious food and a shared love for architecture, making the event a memorable highlight of the summer.

“What a perfect day for the UAPBC summer picnic! Nice weather, a lovely place, lots of food, and warm company!” remarked a member during the event. Attendees contributed a wide array of delectable dishes, including a special “lechon” provided by realtor Kate Carandang. The gathering was not only a feast

for the senses but also a meaningful one, as members brought used books to donate, further showcasing their commitment to giving back. The board of officers played a crucial role in organizing the event, ensuring that everyone felt welcomed and included in the day’s festivities.

The picnic also served as an opportunity to welcome new members to the UAPBC family, including Monique Bautista, Kyle Richelle, Teresita Dabon-Leyson, and John Rivera. It was heartening to see everyone, both long-standing and new members, engaging in lively conversations, sharing experiences, and offering support to one another. As one member aptly put it, “UAPBC is not just a group of architects; we’re like a family.” This sense of camaraderie and mutual respect is what continues to strengthen the bonds within the chapter, making each gathering more special than the last.

Our Identity Understanding the story behind

In early January 2011, the Committee on Logo Design was formed to organize a logo design competition. The competition was announced during the Members Information meeting on January 22, 2011, inviting everyone present to submit a logo design that would reflect the objectives and ideals of the proposed professional organization.

The competition received eight submissions, with the winning logo designed by Sherwin Ruiz, UAP. His design incorporated local elements such as the sky, sea, and land, including the ‘Inukshuk’ stone marker and an Ionic column capital. In coordination with the Committee on Logo Design, Sherwin made several iterations to the winning design, refining its colors and form. Since then, this logo has served as the chapter’s graphic identity.

Walking Tour 2024 Architectural

On August 3, 2024, the United Architects of the Philippines UAP BC Chapter held their General Membership Meeting in the form of a unique and enriching event billed as “Arki Walk Tour 2024.” This walking tour took place in the heart of downtown Vancouver and was designed to give participants an up-close view of the city’s most beautiful, iconic, and heritage buildings. Around 30 members, accompanied by some of their families, joined the event, which showcased the architectural marvels of Vancouver. The tour was meticulously organized by the UAP BC Chapter, with Paolo Galarrita, UAP leading the way as the facilitator, providing brief but insightful descriptions and historical backgrounds of each building visited.

The “Arki Walk Tour 2024” offered members a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Vancouver’s architectural landscape. Paolo Galarrita’s expertise added significant value to the tour, as he highlighted the unique elements and historical significance of each structure. The walk was not just a visual experience but also an educational one, as members learned about the architectural styles, materials, and design philosophies that have shaped Vancouver’s skyline. This immersive experience allowed members to connect with the city’s heritage while appreciating the evolution of architectural practices in an urban environment.

Is there a distinctive Filipino Architecture ?

This growing visibility on the world stage suggests that Filipino architecture is not only distinctive but also relevant in the broader context of global architectural discourse.

A Filipino modern house, a fusion of global and local styles.

Filipino architecture is often a topic of debate among architects, historians, and enthusiasts alike. The question of whether there is a distinctive Filipino style of architecture remains a compelling one, as it invites an exploration of the nation’s rich cultural history and diverse influences. Over centuries, the Philippines has been shaped by various waves of colonization, trade, and migration, each leaving its mark on the architectural landscape. From precolonial indigenous structures to the Spanish, American, and Japanese influences, the country’s built environment has evolved into a unique blend of styles, making it difficult to pinpoint a singular, easily identifiable “Filipino” architecture.

The pre-colonial period offers some clues to what might be considered an indigenous Filipino style. The traditional “bahay kubo”, for instance, is a vernacular architectural form that has become symbolic of rural Philippine life. Its design, which utilizes local materials like bamboo and nipa palm, reflects a deep understanding of the tropical climate and a sensitivity to the environment. However, this indigenous architecture was largely overshadowed by the arrival of the Spanish, who introduced European architectural forms, including churches, fortresses, and civic buildings. These structures, characterized by their Baroque and Neoclassical designs, were adapted to suit the local context, resulting in a fusion of Western and indigenous elements.

The American colonial period further complicated the architectural identity of the Philippines. The introduction of the “tropicalized” American bungalow blurred the lines between what could be considered distinctly Filipino and what was a mere adaptation of foreign styles. Additionally, the post-war era saw the rise of modernism in Filipino architecture, with architects like Leandro Locsin, Juan Nakpil and Francisco Mañosa exploring new forms that were more reflective of the nation’s aspirations for modernization. Despite these efforts, the question of whether a cohesive Filipino architectural style had emerged remained unresolved.

In recent decades, there has been a renewed interest in defining and promoting Filipino architecture. Contemporary Filipino architects are increasingly drawing inspiration from traditional forms and materials, while also engaging with global architectural trends. This synthesis of the old and the new, the local and the global, has led to the emergence of a more confident and distinctive Filipino architectural style. This new wave of architecture is characterized by a deep respect for the environment, an emphasis on sustainability, and a commitment to cultural preservation, all while embracing innovation and modernity.

The international architectural scene has also begun to take notice of this burgeoning Filipino style. Filipino architects and firms are gaining recognition for their unique approach to design, which often incorporates elements of local culture, history, and environmental consciousness. This growing visibility on the world stage suggests that Filipino architecture is not only distinctive but also relevant in the broader context of global architectural discourse. As more Filipino architects receive accolades and their works gain international acclaim, the question of whether there is a Filipino architecture becomes less about whether it exists and more about how it is evolving and being recognized.

AUAP- BC Volunteer Team

... in action at Fraser Valley Gleaners

s part of the UAP BC Chapter’s commitment to community involvement, several of our officers, members, and their families took part in this year’s volunteer program at the Fraser Valley Gleaners Society in Abbotsford, B.C. The Society, a registered non-profit in British Columbia, is dedicated to providing dried and packaged vegetables as donations to less developed countries across Asia, Africa, and South and Central America.

For a day, our UAP BC volunteer team engaged in the hands-on processes of preparing these vital food supplies, including tasks like slicing, chopping, dicing, scraping, and mixing various vegetables. These food products were then carefully packaged and handed over to the Society’s distribution partners, who ensure the goods reach those in need in developing nations. The team found the experience both enjoyable and fulfilling, reinforcing our Chapter’s commitment to giving back to the community. This marks the third time since 2019 that UAP British Columbia has partnered with the Fraser Valley Gleaners Society, highlighting our ongoing dedication to community service as a key aspect of our mission and goals.

Freehand Sketching

As an architect and having the opportunity to work on architecture for four decades now, I still can say that my passion for drawing is still with me. I am lucky to have belonged to a generation of architects that were trained with the use of t-square, triangles, scales, tracing paper, and a lot of freehand and technical drawing, from conceptualization all the way to presentation plates and/or building permit drawings. With the advent of digital drawings, we have to switch from manual to digital drawing. AutoCAD, Sketch-up, Vectorworks, Photoshop, and at present the popularity of Revit as a drawing software to cope with the times.

With many years of using digital softwares, my skill with freehand drawing I would say havedwindled, as not being oftenly used except when we doodle on concepts for our design solutions. The many hours a day spent on computer drawing/drafting plus the daily chores to do at home, has lessened time and/or interest on freehand sketching. Many times other hobbies or interest takes its place, but at the back of my mind I always have this craving for freehand sketching but always the question of what will motivate me to start.

Early this year found myself back to my interest on sketching as a hobby. With the initiative of UapBC colleagues Ar. Joe Larano, Jr on Urban Sketching & Charlie Dondoyano Frenal on Painting with his participation on international art exhibits, and many postings on facebook on this matter, the inspiration and motivations got me into action.

With my basic training in architecture, my knowledge on one, two, and three point perspectives and the basic principles of compositions (balance, colour, proportion, contrast, to name a few) gave me an edge in sketching. Aside from this, we also had courses in monochromatic drawing, still lifes, and outdoor rendering.

With my initial confidence, I started sketching anything that I can think of. It can be a building of interest, a random street scene, or a memory of my good old days. Initially, my sketches were of pencil, pen & ink, coloured pencils, and markers on sketchpads. It took me a few sketches until I had the courage to use watercolour.

As I sketched daily, I notice that compared to other urban sketches posted on facebook, my artwork looks so rigid, sharp, heavy, and accurate. So I wondered if it is my architectural training that makes my sketches stiff? It probably is and so I asked the question what isn’t? I did some readings on urban sketching and also from discussions with Ar. Joe Larano.

I learned that in freehand sketching, 1. We loosen up. Holding our pen in a loose manner. 2. Even by following perspective principles, drawing crooked lines can actually soften drawings. 3. There is no need to draw the structure completely, a partial sketch showing a point of interest can be good enough. 4. There

“With my initial confidence, I started sketching anything that I can think of.”

is no need to exactly copy a subject, if there are 15 windows shown repetively, you don’t need to be exact 5. Be observant with details, light sources, shades and shadows casts.

At this time, most of my drawings are sketched & rendered not on site but on my worktable. As I consider myself a beginner and in search of my own style. I opted to practice and experiment with different sketch styles I see. I have read that in Urban Sketching, you are to sketch on location. Though, I follow many of its sketching techniques, I still prefer to do my artwork as I see from my camera lens as I capture a subject while I’m out there, or in front of my computer monitor, or from memory. I also tend to distort or re-create a scene or view depending on my impression or a story I would like to convey.

For now I just continue my passion for sketching. I am not tying myself to any art movement or style as I am enjoying the freedom to do my art my way, experimenting on mediums I use and discovering other vessels to create and communicate my art. My only goal is to be happy by day’s end.
