Recirculating Trends

F

ashion trends recirculating is when trends from past decades comeback around and back in fashion. This has been happening a lot recently with the speed of fashion increasing at a drastic rate and designers running out of original designs. New designs are being taken from old trends and the designers typically add a modern twist to change it up a little. A lot of the time different decades come in one at a time, for example when we saw flares come back in fashion we also saw a lot of bold prints and boho styled outfits, all of which being from the 70s. Right now we are seeing a lot of 2000s fashion quickly taking over and with the speed of fast fashion these days it doesn’t seem like it will stay for long. Trends are moving quicker than they ever have before, leaving things that were all the range a month ago being uncool and unfashionable the next. While this does seem fun to follow along with and predict what's next in fashion, it does have a very negative impact on the environment. Constantly buying new clothing to keep up with these quick moving trends will inevitably further damage our planet and speed up the effects of global warming. Obviously we need to stop this issue but in order to keep the fashion industry alive trends also need to continue, recirculating trends helps with this because the clothing doesn’t always have to be new.

With the speed of trends increasing they'll probably come, go and come back in again all with in the space of a few years making it easier to stay on trend without buying new clothing.

The 1960s Trends

Oversized Sunglasses Big sunglasses that are often circular or square were very popular and to this day we are still using them to elevate our outfits

The Miniskirt Miniskirts and dresses were all the range in the 60s it was an empowering move for women at the time and the trend has not left since

White Go-Go Boots This 60s trend has translated very well to modern day and was very popular. It seems to have been in fashion once again pretty recently and is an easy way to elevate a look

Mini Dresses Mini dresses were very popular in the 60s, especially structured ones with buttons down them

Leopard Print

Feathered Clothing

Cheater and Leopard prints were among the most popular prints of the decade. This trend has yo-yoed in and out of fashion for many years and it probably will for many more

Feather effect on clothing was a favourite of party goers in the 60s and recently we have seen it intergrated into fashion designs

Some Other Trends Skirt Suits, Slim Scarves, Tuxedo Vests, Headscarves, The Bikini, Plaid, Turtle Necks, Bold Floral Patterns, Leather, Tailored Trousers, Knee High Socks

Slick Fabrics Slick fabrics, especially patent/vinyl coatswere very popular and is something we havent seen a lot of recently so may be something to come back relitavly soon

Sleek Accessories Accessories like hats and purses were very chic in this decade and jewellery was very popular, this has translated to now where it is a big part of every day outfits

The 1970s Trends Exaggerated Sleeves Pearls

Loose clothing especially exaggerated Sleeves/ flared sleeves were very popular in the 70s because it fits in with that hippie, boho style. We saw this trend come back a few years ago in a few designs and clothing with 70s style prints as well.

Right now, pearls and beaded necklaces are all over the market, this jewellery trend is one that pops up at some point in most decades.

In the '70s, it was all about wearing long necklaces and pairing it with satin dresses for evening wear and hippie style is typically beaded jewellery in a similar style.

Halter Necks Halter Neck tops and dresses are all the range right now and this all started in the 70s. Of corse halter necks have been a thing since but at the moment people are especially loving them for their spring and summer dresses.

Tie Dye & Crochet

Cropped Tops

Tie Dye and crochet were all the rage in the hippie era in the 70s. Crochet is very popular at the minute for summer wear and about 5 years ago tie die was in pretty much every store.

Cropped tops originated in the 70s when women started to be a little more daring with the way they dressed. This trend pretty much hasn't left since and almost everyone between the ages of 12-30 are wearing them. There are many, many different designs coming from this trend, allowing new trends to form from this original trend.

Boho Dresses Boho dresses were very popular in the hippie stage of the 70s and they have continued to be. At the moment they are especially used for festivals like Cochella

Trousers / Jeans Flared trousers along with bell bottoms and straight leg trousers were the most popular style of jeans / trousers in the 70s. Women didn't really wear trousers or jeans before then because they were considered a masculine item of clothing.

Flares were in style about 5 years ago and bell bottoms are currently growing in

The 1980s Trends Shoulder Pads Shoulder pads were the image of the 80s, they were in anything they could be but the most popular use for shoulder pads were in blazers and dresses. This was to show power at a time when women were just gaining the respect and equallity they deserved. Shoulder pads haven't come back as strong as they did in the 80s however structured blazers are all the rage right now and I would say most people own at least one, proving that most styles do come back around.

Athletic Wear Athletic wear was very big in the 80s with a lot of workout videos coing out. The trend tended to be leg warmers, leotards/body suits and sometimes leggings underneath. These trends have been taken in a different may in modern times with bodysuits rising in popularity for everyday wear and being worn under trousers and jeans. Leg warmers hadn't really been popular recently until this winter when we saw people using them when having their legs outingcold whether .

Athletic wear now is still made out of a lot of tight fitted stretchy materials but has just adapted from what we saw people wearing in the 80s.

Denim Denim was a key item in an 80s wardrobe, one big thing was double denim and oversized denim jackets.

Leather jackets were also a staple in the 80s and they followed a similar style to the denim ones by being oversized and baggy. Obviously denim carried on being a big trend with jeans and we have recently seen double denim coming back in style. Oversized clothing went out of fashion for quite a while but it is now back in and has been for a while.

80s Trends

Big Hair, Spandex, Ripped Jeans, Lace, Sheer clothing, Neon Colours, Mullets, High Waisted Jeans, Polka Dots, Layering lots of Jewellery, Lots of Leather, Mini Skirts, Cropped Trousers, Sheer Tights, Off the Shoulder, Leggings, Graphic Tees, Big Sunglasses, Socks and High Rise trainers, High Cut Swimsuits, Acid Wash, Scrunchies, Fingerless Gloves, Preppy Fashion

Turtle Necks Roll Necks / Turtle Necks were very popular in the 80s, especially for those who were older or for those wanting a more conservative look.Turtle neck were very popular about 5 years ago and will probably be again very soon. We have seen 2 80s trends merge with turtle neck bodysuits being in fashion around 2016 showing how trends can develop.

The 1990s Trends Denim Denim carried on being a big trend after the 80s and everyday wear for people was typically baggy mom jeans and a top or high waisted denim shorts and a top, towards the end of the decade low waisted jean were slowly becoming more popular. The denim was typically always that bright blue shade and it wasn't as common to see lots of different coloured denim like we do now.

Dungarees Dungarees were a big trend in the 90s, starting with hiphop artists wearing them to then actors wearing them on shows like friends which inevitably influenced many to jump on the trend and buy them.

Dungarees are worn a lot by kids but we are yet to see this trend come back around for adult fashion.

Slip Dresses Slip dresses were very popular, especially white and black ones. These have definitely seen a come back this year and last with a satin/silk slip dress being a staple in the summer wardrobe.

Cargo Trousers Combat/Cargo trousers grew in popularity in the 90s and were worn by a lot of celebrities.

This trend started in the 90s but did carry on in to the 2000s also. Right now cargos a very popular but before recently you would never really see them being worn. Low waisted cargos were the trend in the 90s and then we saw a few high waisted camouflage cargos around 2016 and then low waisted back in again now.

This just shows how the "coolest" styles change and develop.

Bucket Hats Bucket hats originated in the 90s and was used for hip hop style which made it grow in popularity for many young people and other celebrities. This trend was out of fashion for quite a while but around 2018 they started being used for festival wear and by the next few years it was a common summer essential for many in Generation Z.

Checked Shirts Plaid/Checked Shirts were a real staple in the 90s showing the real 90s grunge style.

These were worn in an oversized style over pretty much anything like tees and dresses which allows for a light layer when its a little cold. This trend hasn't come back in the exact same way but over sized shirts as jacket is something that is very popular now, especially in the uk now summer is here and we don't need thick coats

The 2000s Trends Cut Out Clothing Revealing clothing was quite big in the 2000s, one of which being clothing with high slits or cut outs.

Also people were wearing clothing where their thong/underwear would be on show. This has come back recently with going out wear with many people wearing dresses and tops with cut outs/holes where they wouldn't typically be.

Tracksuits

Low Waisted Low waisted clothing was the style in the 2000s, pretty much everything had a low waist band from jeans to joggers and skirts. A lot of the clothing was super low waisted which was also a popular style. Since then we have seen high waisted clothing and super high waisted clothing as the trend.

Now the trend is low waisted again but we are yet to see super low waisted make a return to the stores.

Tracksuits (especially Juicy Couture Tracksuits) were very popular in the 2000s and they were worn as everyday clothing not just for working out like tracksuits originally were for.

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton were two of the people who started this trend. Recently we have seen a high waisted version of this come back in trend with the brand Juicy Couture.

Corset Tops

Corset top are very popular at the moment and we see people dressing them up or wearing them casually but this trend actually was popularised in the 2000s and were typically paired with low waisted jeans. It is no surprise that just as the low waisted style comes back in fashion so do corsets because these two items pair perfectly together.

Baguette Bags Baguette bags were the main style of bag in the 2000s and everyone had them. A lot of them were printed with logos which was another popular trend of this decade. Baguette bags are also very popular at the moment and many designer brands like Balenciaga and Dior have released popular versions of them and other high street brands have copied them and made duplicates of the designer versions. These bags are the perfect size for going out because they are big enough to fit a phone and some other essentials like keys, card and make up.

Sequins Sequins were popularised in the 2000s, they were on bags, tops and a lot of other clothing and accessories. This is because the 2000s was all about extreme fashion and being excessive and bling. This particular trend we are yet to see come back into women's fashion however with a lot of 2000s trends currently being back in fashion it is likely that this one will recirculate too.

Lace Up Clothing The lace up effect was used for many different garments in the 2000s, one of which being jeans used as a replacement for zips and buttons. It was also used in extreme ways like on red carpets with dresses and tops making clothing a little more risqué and revealing.

This has been used more with tops recently and not yet with other garments like jeans however this will probably be introduced soon with many other 2000s trends hitting the shelves as well.

Fashion Forecasting is all about predicting upcoming trends. The job of a fashion forecaster is to predict the colours, fabrics, materials, prints and graphics that will be presented on the runway and in stores for the upcoming seasons.

Fashion Forecasting Fashion forecasting is a skill that everyone could benefit from having however no one can actually ever know for certain what new trends will be in fashion in the upcoming weeks.

Even though you can never know for sure, there are some pretty great ways to predict and guess whats next in fashion. One way of doing this is by looking at past trends from decades before, this is because pretty much all trends that are coming in fashion now have been in fashion before

in previous decades.

You do this by looking at the trends that haven't come back in fashion yet or ones that have been out for a long time. This is because trends typically go out of fashion for quite a while and then find their way back in.

Obviously with their being so many past trend this can be hard so one thing that can help is if you look at the other trends at the moment and typically the new trend will be from this decade. For example if low rise

tracksuits are popular at the time then you can be quite certain that other trends that will follow will also be from the decade these items were popular in, which is the 2000s in this case.

The reason being is because virtually all of the time recirculating trends are from the same decade, so in a way it is more like the decade is in fashion rather than the specific items being sold.

Another way to predict trends is by looking at runways and gathering a theme/style from that.

Celebrities Influence on Trends Starting a trend is hard to do but it is not when all eyes are on you, this is why celebrities and influencers now are the way we see what is going to be in fashion in the weeks to come. Before the age of social media designers would influence the trends that would occur by designing them and then selling them but now we as consumers hold a lot more power and are inevitably in control of what the designers make/sell that season. Celebrities are captured by the paparazzi and posted by the media wearing their "street style" and influencers use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to show what they are wearing, then we as the consumers of these images and videos decide what we are going to copy and try recreate ourselves. When retailers see these trends taking off they then rush to manufacture the garment so that they are the first to have it and the first place people go in order to follow the trend.

Celebrities and Influencers have a huge impact on trends. They are typically the first to be wearing them and people tend to follow suit hence the name "Influencers". This is usually captured by paparazzi with them snapping shots of celebrities street wear or through the use of social media.

TV's Influence on Trends TV has been influencing the way people think for decades and that doesn't exclude fashion.

We have seen many programmes over the years influence the way people dress at the time, this is from shows like Friends, Peaky Blinders, Bridgeton, Sex Education, Stranger Things and many more. Some of these shows are period dramas, some just have clothing inspired by a certain decade and some are just normal shows.

Friends was one of the biggest comedy sitcoms through the nineties and probably still to this day, many people at the time would copy outfits they saw the actors and actresses wear because of their stylish wardrobe choices and this still happens with most programmes on TV. Sex Education is a show about British teenagers at school set in the present day however the school seems a lot more American and the clothing and sets all give off a very 80s aesthetic. Lots of fans of the show have taken this 80s fashion vibe and tried to incorporate it in to their own wardrobes proving the heavy influence shows like these

TV can have a huge influence on fashion we have seen this with many different programmes over the years.

However this isn't something that is new, since TV was introduced people have been influenced by what they have seen on the screen even if they don't realise it.

Environmental Issues of Fashion The fashion industry have a huge impact on the environment and their negative effects are only increasing with the speed of fast fashion and manufacturing rates growing.

Sustainable fashion is something we should really be working towards however this is hard when wanting to stay on trend and keep up with such high speed fashion.

There are many different ways to be more sustainable with buying habits but not all of them are realistic or something that the everyday person will take on board. Before deciding which is the most realistic and best suited to your life style, you need to understand why we must start being more sustainable otherwise there won't be a real incentive to do so.

Building a Capsule Wardrobe

The purpose behind a capsule wardrobe is to maintain a collection of essential and classic pieces in your closet that will last through trends and can be mixed and matched over time. It means personalising your wardrobe with items you love and that fit your lifestyle but on a scale of 30-40 pieces. For example you may have 4 pairs of jeans in your favourite style and have one blue, one black, one nude and one white pair which will allow you to create many different looks with only 4 options.

The goal is to grab pieces that will stand the test of time and never really go out of trend, this will allow you to have a base outfit and then elevate a look with accessories or with one feature piece. This wouldn't mean no more shopping at all, you could still buy in to a few trends or one off purchase for occasions but it would minimise the amount of shopping that would need to be done while allowing you to have all of the basics to build a look.

Thrifing Thrifting is a sustainable form of shopping where you can buy second hand or vintage clothing typically for a cheaper price than it was originally retailed for. This form of sustainable shopping was popularised in America but is slowly finding its way over to the UK.

If you are wanting to shop sustainably and on a budget, thrifting is the best possible way to do so. Thrifting allows you to buy second hand clothing that has barely been used for a cheaper price than it originated at. In the UK we didn't have thrift stores targeted at a younger generation for a long time, we had charity shops and that was just about it. This was good if you knew how to sew because it would mean you were able to up-cycle the clothing into something a little more "trendy" however if not then there wasnt many other options when looking to be sustainable. Recently with people becoming more aware of the environmental impacts fashion is having on the world, there have been more stores opening that are targeted at younger generations. Vintage stores are very popular for Gen Z especially because you can find pre-loved items that were from the decade that is in trend due to trend recirculation. Thrift stores are also a great way to get rid of

the clothing that you no longer want or clothing that is no longer in fashion and this could mean that when it does come back in someone is able to find your garment in a thrift store or a vintage store and buy into a trend without damaging the environment in the process. Giving your clothing to thrift stores is a great option because it saves the clothing you don't want from going to landfill where it will sit for years and years and damage our planet. Over the past few years with the switch to online shopping and the growth of it over lockdowns, thrifters have had to find a new way to buy clothing online but still be sustainable. Because of this platforms like Depop and Vinted have launched and done very well, these are platfroms which allow people to sell their clothing and also buy other people old garments. This is great because it encourages people to buy second had rather than buy new and also earns people money.

Storing

Away Clothing Storing clothing away correlates really well with recirculating trends. The concept of keeping all clothing stored away is so that when trends come back in fashion you will already have the clothing from the first time it was in fashion stored away in storage.

Storing your clothing away is a great way of making sure you are able to keep up with trends while also being sustainable, this is because if you are to keep all clothing then you will be able to wear the clothes again when they come back in fashion. With the speed of fast fashion these days trends can come and go within the space of a month which evidently means that all trends are just going to have to keep recirculating and this process will only get quicker with time. Pairing storing clothes away with a capsule wardrobe is one of the best things to do if you aren't really keen on changing where you shop or many of your shopping habits, this is because you will have all of the basics and with time you will have collect many of the trends from different time periods allowing you to rewear them when the time comes. Another positive of keeping all your clothing stored away is that when you have a family you will be able to show what you wore when and the generations to coe will be able to wear your clothing. Keeping all clothes you have ever owned stored away obviously will take up a lot of room but there are clever ways of storing things away that help keep it confined to a small space. If you are unable to do this or don't have the space, giving clothing to thrift stores is still a great way to make sure your clothing lasts longer and it carries on in this circulation throughout

Storage

Solutions When storing clothing away you will need somewhere to put them and something that doesn't take up too much room. One thing that would be good to use when doing this sustainable method is vacuum packs, these are plastic bags that you put your garments in and then using a hoover you suck all the remaining air out of the bag leaving it in a much more condense state than they were. You can get many different types of these bags, ones that hang up and ones that don't and ones that are see through and ones that aren't. Buying see through vacuum packs will allow you to see what is in each one and make it easier when you are trying to find a certain garment to wear again. A system that would make this all a lot easier to navigate over time is if you were to categorise them in to colour, the year you wore them, style or into categories like jeans and tops etc. with labels stuck on the bag. With the clothing being in vacuum packs it means they are a lot less likely to get ruined and they are preserved nicely in an air tight bag until you want them again. This method is the best way to keep clothes over the years and not be overloaded with wardrobes and boxes overflowing with what is probably unorganised clothing.

Sustainable Fashion Habits Upcycling Upcycling is where you take a garment and edit it in a way to make it new, this can be by sewing, cutting or just re-styling. This is great for trends because you can take any fabric you like either from an old garment or a roll of fabric and style it in to the latest trend without having to buy new.

Renting Renting is a great method for when you want to buy a new outfit for an event such as a party or a wedding. Renting is the more responsible option because garments for events tend to only be worn once or twice before being thrown out so by renting you are letting that item have many lives before it goes to landfill and it will also most likely save you money in the process.

Passing Down

Passing clothing on to family and friends is a great thing to do when trying to create some space in your wardrobe. It gives the garments a second life and saves your clothing from ending up in landfills and damaging the planet.

Donating

Donating is another great way to clear out and the best thing about it is that you know your clothing is going to be helping someone in need. There are many donation bins and organisations that sort out clothing to be sent to 3rd world countries or to places where there are wars and they need help.

Shared Closets

Sharing closets with people you are living with is great because you have a wider option of clothing to choose from and when you want to buy in to a trend you only have to buy one of the items which ultimately cuts down the demand which reduces the amount of clothing being manufactured.
