Le Millefeuille

Burgos, Spain

Elderly and student housing

Le Millefeuille is an innovative co-housing proposal in northern Burgos, overlooking el Parque del Castillo. Nestled between the park and the residential outskirts, it blends housing, shared spaces, and nature. The project fosters an interconnected community, housing both elderly residents and University of Burgos students, promoting intergenerational interaction and shared experiences.

Overlapping Populations

The project revolves around the concept of communal living, where residents come together in shared spaces for activities such as dining, relaxation, and cleaning. In addition to serving its residents, the project aims to extend its amenities to the wider community of the residential area. This is achieved through the inclusion of a ground-floor café and restaurant that can be enjoyed by everyone, further enhancing the sense of community and promoting social engagement.

The vertical elements of the structure are the walls of the apartments and cores, and the columns. The horizontal elements are beams and slabs. The columns enlarge on the ground floor to accommodate the rain pipe and the necessary forces passing through the building.

In the Shade of the Aqueduct

In a small town an hour outside of Rome lies an aqueduct that once connected with the central water system of the Roman Empire. A symbol of the survival of the town, placed on top of a steep platform, the water from the aqueduct was controlled by the reigning family. Running through what used to be their private garden and connecting into the castle, the aqueduct has now fallen into ruin.

Sala degli Scarlioni

Starting the semester, we first researched the intervention by BBPR in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. Particular focus was placed on the flow of the space in the final room of the museum, that was specially designed to house La Pieta.

Existing and Possibilities

and Possibilities

Revitalisation

The aqueduct became the focal point of our project. We focused on revitalising the whole park, looking back on examples of traditional aristocratic gardens, leading the visitors through specific views and experiences while moving through the park. The fulcrum of the experience was the pool at the base of the aqueduct, allowing the aqueduct to be reframed in its sense of purpose.

The Distorted Shaft

Imagine transforming the Bolhão metro station shaft into a vibrant, unique hotel right in the heart of Porto – a haven for young, adventurous travellers seeking an authentic urban experience. This reimagined space would offer a blend of industrial charm and contemporary design, making it an ideal base for exploring the city's cultural hotspots.

Plan of EPFL Refuge

An Alpine Refuge to Urban Metro

The project began with a case study analysis of the Bonatti Bivouac by EPFL, a refuge in the Swiss Alps constructed entirely from larch wood pieces connected solely by joints.

After completing this initial research, we were given specific “obstructions” to guide our design. Our team’s requirements included using six times the original structure’s material, accommodating 12 people, relocating to Bolhão Metro in Porto, and targeting the same backpacker demographic.

These sleeping pods are intended for backpackers arriving late at night by train, seeking a budgetfriendly, convenient place to spend a single night before moving on. Similar to the alpine refuge, these pods are designed for short, one-night stays.

After several trials, the team’s final proposal places the sleeping area in the metro station’s vertical shaft, with a bar on the platform that doubles as a reception desk. This project envisions backpackers arriving in Porto, using the metro to reach the hotel, and staying in pods as a base for exploring the city. A Typical Visit

The Pods

The pods were designed to hang suspended in the shaft, one backpacker per pod. Inspired by birds nests, the proposal includes all the necessary amenities for sleeping for the night, similarly to the initial refuge by the EPFL.

The shaft is 15 m high, running alongside the staircase that brings people to the metro.

The Sanctuary

Madrid, Spain

A Self-Sustaining Haven for Madrid's Homeless Community

Madrid has a considerable population experiencing homelessness or living on the verge of homelessness, with only limited support systems available to assist them in moving beyond their current crisis. This project centres on principles of self-sustainability and skill-building, offering individuals an opportunity to develop new abilities that can foster independence. Positioned within one of the city s most diverse and contrasting neighbourhoods, the project serves as a sanctuary, providing a space where people can regain stability and start to rebuild their lives in an empowering environment.

Factory and Education

Spain, like much of Europe, is experiencing a decline in skilled manual labourers, such as woodworkers, electricians, painters, and plumbers. This project addresses both the need for social housing and the opportunity to train individuals in these essential trades. The site operates as a modular housing factory, producing units that fit within steel frames across the area. As more people arrive, the structures are gradually filled. Designed to match the dimensions of inter-modal containers, these modules can be easily moved around the site or transported into the city by truck, offering flexible housing solutions for those who prefer to remain in urban areas.

Homelessness in Madrid

Madrid has a relatively low homeless population, defined as those without shelter, yet the city’s response remains disproportionate. Known for its anti-homeless architecture and limited resources, Madrid offers few options for its vulnerable populations. However, a much larger group faces “insecure housing” or “houselessness,” with minimal avenues for support. The site for this project is located in Chamartin, a district in northern Madrid that, while primarily a business hub, reveals stark social inequalities within a compact area.

Roma Renascitur

Rome, Italy

Re-Nature Rome Competition - Honourable Mention

The project revolves around the reconstruction of the ruins of the Roman Forum. Using mesh structures overgrown with greenery, the once vibrant centre of Ancient Rome can be re-established. The mesh structures prevent the plants from settling roots onto the ruins, ensuring that the roots have no effect on the ruins themselves, while providing a restoration of the Forum. Currently, the Forum itself and the surrounding area are mostly grass fields or just empty, with larger roads surrounding them. The area is heavily visited by tourists, but there is little attempt to allow for them to be immersed in the history as it once was.
