River Spey, Aberlour | July 2024
Laggan Lookbook

Hannah Buchanan
A few months ago, I was lucky enough to join family and friends on an adventure up to Laggan House in Aberlour, Scotland. I didn’t know much about this greatly anticipated annual trip, but from what I was told, it was going to be a trip filled with fishing, food and a lot of wine!
I am a landscape painter by trade and over the last year or so I have been trying to push myself to do more painting en plein air. This is painting on location, and it’s very different from painting in the studio. You need to work much faster and as the light changes, the painting needs to be adjusted. I only had 3 full days to paint so as soon as I arrived, I got to work.
Painting the River Spey was breathtaking. I have painted many Kentish rivers before, but they now seem very small in comparison. The vast width of the river and the beautiful foliage made for painting heaven, and everywhere I looked I saw potential compositions and studies I wanted to try!
During the trip, I was directed to all the famous fishing spots to set up my painting gear, including Gas, Sandbanks and Millionaires to name a few. Each spot was wonderful, and as the days went on, I warmed myself up to tackle the iconic bridge crossing by the lunch hut. Most days were overcast (great for fishing, less helpful for painting) but for this last session the sun came out creating beautiful colours and shadows on the bridge.
I made 7 studies while at Laggan House and over the past few months I have been working back into these pieces in the studio. From this, I have built a collection of quick studies, small paintings and one large painting on canvas. All paintings have been included in this book, alongside some detailed shots of the original studies. Some of you may recognise these as you will have seen the original compositions emerging in Scotland!
Links have been attached to this book which will send you to my website if needed. Alternatively, visit www.hannahbuchanan.com/lagganproject or email hannah@buchananmail.co.uk.
I hope you enjoy these paintings as much as I enjoyed making them. A special thanks to James and Emma for having me and to Gellybean and Rupert for bringing me to this special place.
Take care,
Hannah x

Why are some paintings more detailed than others?
Some paintings are made as stand-alone pieces, whilst others are made much faster in order to capture the quickly changing light. These studies may be used as a reference for future paintings.
