EDUCATION
Born and raised in Hong Kong, I am greatly passionate about the underlying multi-lateral urban systems that dictate the physical environment, and am interested in studying development in ex-urban hinterlands, such that natural landscapes can be a strategy to limit urban sprawl. Backed with the understanding of ecological systems and long term built project management strategies from landscape architecture, I am eager to explore infrastructure investment strategies in relation to risk mitigation and scenario planning, particularly from through the lens of development and portfolio management strategies. I recognize, in the industry’s pursuit for densifying cities, the need to manage physical space as a limited resource, and am determined to investigate methods in quantifying natural disaster and risks into assets through public-private partnerships.
Given experience in design practice - from construction in commercial projects, to design guidelines in master planning proposals, I’ve grown to be interested in the valorization of metaphysical values of nature based solutions, reconsidering natural services to be equitable, resiliency anchors against the climate crisis in developing economies. Projects presented in this portfolio explore revitalization and activation of urban hinterlands, through environmental, economic and physical perspectives, and challenging the role of landscape design in a broader context, as a medium to encourage equitable collaboration across industries.

NICOSIA,
URBAN ACTIVATOR
- HOLISTIC FRAMEWORK FOR YOUTH-CENTRIC, SELF-SUSTAINING DEVELOPMENT
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN “RUPTURE/FLOW>” WORKSHOP, LED BY PROFESSOR STEPHEN SEARS, WITH DEDE RUGGLES
Through developing a more youth friendly city, URBAN ACTIVATOR mends existing ruptures in the city, and develop an identity such that the city of Nicosia can be treated as a unique, sustainable city of its own. Over time, through economic and urban interventions, both physical and intangible, the project sets an example for further local proposals beyond the site boundaries, and outside of Nicosia.

(TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS)
Nicosia is an enticing city of great potential, and it seems to crave new visions. It is a community that produces many capable young people, but due to existing economic drawbacks, Cyprus lacks the monetary and physical ability to provide worthwhile opportunities, resulting in a situation that has high yields and high imports – overreliance on external forces. Observations of the city’s dynamics suggest that in addition to urban sprawl away from the WALLED CITY [identified as the area within the Venetian Walls], there exists a social rupture characterized by demographic dispersal. These factors, coupled with the city’s increasing rate of economic growth, present the site as a noteworthy space for urban intervention.
Nicosia has great potential and advantages given its advantageous geographic location, with various resources shared with the European Union and adjacent establishments. It should be acknowledged that development progress has already been made by many others, (e.g. European Investment Fund) to fulfill financial needs for projects, but lacks concentration for effective implementation. Nicosia calls for a need to revitalize its streetscape to sustain businesses and encourage a self-sustainable economy, with an emphasis on SME’s and creative spaces to establish a cyclical economy.

CATEGORIZING RUPTURE / FLOW
Exploration in the walled and expanded city reveals physical and intangible ruptures in the economy and community, resulting in a divide in demographic and skill level that implies an imbalance and disconnect in development.
Documented through a matrix of site photos
and sketches, it is noted that there are notable critical issues and characteristics unique to the walled city and expanded city respectively. This begs the question if there are ways to harness these advantages to assist and compliment its counterpart.

PROJECT SITE INTRODUCTION
Previously the home for ‘Fisk Generating Station’, the project site is located in Pilsen, Lower West Side in close proximity to Chicago’s Chinatown. Notably, the site is a part of in Chicago’s Industrial Corridor Modernization Initiative that looks to redevelop similar brownfield sites for various purposes.
In addition, Pilsen faced notable business foreclosures in the recent years, with majority of vacancies fronting the industrial corridor. CTA has also requested for this site to be transformed into a bus storage facility, despite disapprovals from locals in fear of further pollution and land degradation.

A COMPLEX HISTORY
Chicago’s historic prominence during the Rust Belt boom dwindled soon after railroads were introduced to the economy, and practical uses of Chicago’s riverways fell. Coupled with the Paris Agreement of 2015, and a general shift away from fossil fuels and coal-powered
energy, numerous industrial sites, including Fisk, were agreed by the local communities and governmental bodies to be shut down permanently, leaving barren concrete land located at key nodes of the river system. IM/ EX-port reconsiders this precedent and seeks to reactivate the site through modern techniques.

Situated at the confluence of three states and its unique geologic qualities, Cairo (pronounced CAY-ro), despite its present rapid decline, was once a city with great potential given its importance during the Civil War, establishing cities such as ‘Future City’ and ‘Urbandale’. However, with the establishment of railroads and therefore the reduced use of riverways, Cairo lost its prominence and fell into decline. This trend is reminiscent of many shrinking / declining Mid-Western cities, as modernism overrides reliance on the land.

Are there key assets that can be activated to catalyze change and “break the loop”?
Site Imagery at South Chicago, East Chicago, Gary and Lake Station confirm economic decline.
MESO SCALE: DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES - IS ACTIVATION THE RIGHT ANSWER?
(U.S. Census Bureau ‘16)
Some of the recognized issues within the Mid-West context is economy of super-cities dominating the market, leaving minimal room for development and investment in a smaller, diverse collection of towns.
This is a result of densification and shrinking city phenomenon as resources are depleted, along with an emphasis on minimizing land use and maximizing output, resulting in modernized machinery dominating the agricultural market that was once labor-intensive.
Could we consider a scenario where each town is developed based on a specialized production for one natural asset? Similar to how rudimentary urban systems were formed.
In reference to Charles Waldheim’s research “50 Species - Towns”.
One of the obvious limiting factors is heavy reliance on one asset and lack of diversity but could be balanced out if the systems collaborated and synchronized processes.
Selected sites host superfund sites that could be activated, and suffer from similar EJ issues.
IDENTIFYING COMMON LIMITATIONS
The selected towns share similar flaws of auto-dependency, disconnect with adjacent agricultural fields - resulting in food deserts, with substantial poverty and minority population as a result of white-flight and other transitions.

Connected by a proposed passenger railway system, URBAN FLUX is a framework that identifies existing natural and physical assets that is unique to each town, and utilises them for sustainable development. By focusing resources on the assigned production cycle phase, communities can specialize and develop more intensively and effectively in specified areas.

ACTIVATION
CLOSE COLLABORATION BETWEEN MULTIPLE PARTIES
URBAN FLUX framework relies on continued, close collaboration to ensure the longevity of the project.
before / after cost of living comparison
Savings accumulate overtime, investment will pay off in the coming 5-10 yrs.
SYNERGIES DAY IN A LIFE
Key drivers of the Urban Flux framework plan range from research to adjusting businesses based on local talent, and work to collaborate and inform each other.
space
Many underpriviledged populations struggle with cumulative costs and inefficiencies in the present a day. Gradual adjustments in cost of living and time will greatly benefit wellbeing and health of citizens, thereby attracting populations to these cities. Note that open space is parallel to, and in some cases, secondary to industry reform, and should only act as a supporting role as opposed to priority.
+ shifting populations to Great Lakes region due to climate change
+ coastal regions under threat = drives up food, transportation prices
