Shift from carbon neutral to nature-positive
DesmondTutu once said, "He who remains impartial in the face of hardship partners with the oppressor."
Some people think we would have a better chance of reversing climate change if we stopped using plastic, switched to renewable energy sources, and stopped harming marine habitats. Sadly, this is not at all the case.
The negative effects of prior deeds are not always neutralized by acts of goodness especially if our goal is to transform the earth back into what it once was
In recent years, phrases like "carbon neutrality" and "nett zero" have gained popularity in discussions about climate change and public policy Carbon neutrality has been used as the primary benchmark in several attempts to establish climate goals by decision-makers and stakeholders However, for the reasons listed below, this is a poor strategy:
● We are prevented from striving to go above and beyond the bare minimum by the emphasis on carbon offsetting and footprint calculations Although carbon-neutral actions may be beneficial, they are merely a drop in the ocean when seen holistically When neutrality goals focus more on doing less harm than on being creative about having the greatest impact, the positive benefit is essentially nonexistent
● Carbon neutrality results from a limited viewpoint that holds specific businesses or individuals accountable for our environmental problems. Hence, only those who are guilty should make active contributions to improving the world. This is untrue, however, as the regeneration movement needs the participation of a large number of individuals and organizations.
● The preceding comment from DesmondTutu, to sum up, expresses it well. In circumstances with high stakes, remaining neutral is not the best course of action. At this time, the depletion and degradation of our planet's resources are at an unparalleled level. Being undecided about the subject is neither honorable nor practical. Each of us must choose a side.
Thinking beyond Carbon Neutrality
The neutrality bubble is beginning to pop, which is excellent news The strategies and activities that
people and businesses are doing to save the earth are steadily becoming more proactive
This shift in perspective is the result of two recent changes The first is the shift in emphasis from regeneration to sustainability We now realize that blaming others and acting altruistically do not solve our difficulties Instead, we should implement a better approach to problem-solving that includes everyone in the process of restoring the world
The change from "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" to "Reserve, Restore, Rewild" is the second shift in action. This change motivates us to take more proactive rather than reactive activities for the earth.
Anew trend from carbon-neutral to nature-vivacious results from both of these movements This merely means that we are altering the types of objectives and standards we pursue 'Better' comes after 'less evil'
Being Nature Positive
What does it mean to be nature-positive?
The World Economic Forum (WEF) defines nature positive as increasing the ability of our planet and communities to prevent and reverse the depletion of natural resources. An attitude known as "nature positive" aims to improve the world as much as possible. This is in contrast to the net-zero agenda, which measures "good" in terms of how much negative energy can be offset or how much depletion can be reversed. We shouldn't treat our commitment to the environment like an accounting theory where good equals evil. Break-even points and equilibriums won't renew the globe.
Being nature-positive entails thinking creatively about additional methods to restore the environment It motivates us to think creatively and avoid being stale Most significantly, having a good attitude towards nature does not impose restrictions on who or how we might help the earth regenerate In order to achieve regeneration goals, more than a few things should be done, such as buying carbon credits, increasing tree planting, reducing plastic pollution, or switching to renewable energy sources
Anature-positive mindset, on the other hand, is characterized by an abundance mindset that finds chances to better the earth everywhere For instance, businesses should link their objectives to a better planet for future generations than focusing solely on climate philanthropy People can make a difference at work or in society at large by doing more than just recycling or reusing home things
Finally, natural positivity is the ideal towards which we should all aim It motivates, unites, and widens the range of actions we can take to better the environment.
