Craftsmanship and creativity are what produce sleek and practical crafts. Asking questions along the way - lots of them - is key to realising ideas.
Creativity and problem-solving make great crafts. Students found out what 5 NGOs and 1 SE needed for their users by applying community research and design thinking skills, and gave back to those in need through works that were appealing and useful. The next challenge for them was to learn the basics of craft entrepreneurship.
Starting an artisan business requires know-how in sales and marketing, in which business planning, branding and operations management are pivotal. Students gained valuable hands-on experience in design, production and marketing and sales through the fair.
Learning about Culture, Craftsmanship,
Creativity and Entrepreneurship enables students to develop an alternative career pathway and promote community inclusion.
It fosters self-realisation while helping others, also drives positive changes to our world and promotes social wellbeing.

1
Foundation on design thinking
Upon completing 6 Culture and Craft lessons in the first term, lessons on Creativity and Entrepreneurship started in the second. Young instructors engaged students in stakeholder mapping and infographic exercises by using MOL’s Creativity Teaching Kit. Worksheets provided guidance to design theme creation, which formed the basis for product prototyping and prepared students for visits to the NGOs and SE.
2 Virtual meetings with service organisations COVID meant visits to NGOs and SE took place over Zoom, but thanks to meticulous preparation by all parties involved, students from 20 schools were able to understand the backgrounds, physical settings and services provided by the organisations. This provided context for the craft wares to be designed.
Once design concepts and drafts were developed by students, the young instructors briefed and discussed those ideas with NGOs and SE. Feedback was collected which led to adjustments by students in subsequent lessons, before starting to produce their craft. Young instructors offered guidance on craft techniques, production time lead, choice of materials and forms of the wares, allowing students to produce the most suitable wares within the available lessons.
4 Presenting and demonstrating the works of craft
Once work was completed, the team had them delivered to the organisations. The students themselves also paid visits and demonstrated the use of the wares, and had exchanges with representatives and other users.

The ‘Handmade Wellbeing’ team ran teachers’ seminars at different stages where they shared their views on the S4 curriculum and how students reacted to the training.
Teachers acknowledged the programme during the seminars, while offering a host of feedback and suggestions. Some pointed out that it wasn’t easy for students to design wares for NGOs and social enterprise after 6 lessons on craft culture and skills. The transition from academic learning to creation was a challenge. Others said students found it hard to grasp ideas like 'stakeholders' and 'community resources'.
The pandemic certainly posed the biggest challenge of them all to the programme. Visits to organisations could only take place virtually, and exchanges were limited as well.
The team and instructors responded by streamlining communications and programme execution to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Founded in 2020, Keep It Simple is a social enterprise that provides funeral services directly at hospitals to serve those who otherwise could not afford a respectable farewell. As a life and death education hub, it also sells books and hosts community talks, workshops, visits and experiences on relevant issues. The knowledge empowers everyone to take better care of themselves and family, and learn to live in the moment.
‘Handmade Wellbeing’ students were particularly attached to funeral services for miscarried babies within 24 weeks. They applied their know-how in craft to design and produce works of craft that seek to emotionally support parents.

This is a very different topic for students. They brought comfort to parents and were inspired with thoughts about life and soul. Among the many works created, the ceramic flowers impressed me most with their vibrance. They may look like an ordinary ornament, but the story that comes with them is a great lesson in life and death.

Craft & Self-Healing
Art in Hospital (AIH) was founded in 1994, and was subsequently registered as a charitable institution. Connecting artists, healthcare workers and volunteers, AIH runs not-for-profit art activities to make hospitals a more lively place. It believes in the power of art in healing the soul, and seeks to serve those in need by making hospitals more vibrant through a variety of artistic initiatives.
Having learned about AIH’s work, students produced a series of animal-themed wooden toys to answer the needs of kids in hospital: to have fun and enjoy themselves.

Life Workshop is a welfare organisation founded in 2004 that seeks to improve quality of life, with poverty, growth and community care its key areas of focus. In 2011, they started to remind young people of old businesses and the importance of inheritance. Cheung Hung Photography has been in Tai Kok Tsui for over 50 years. One of Life Workshop’s partners, the shop has an affectionate following despite the lack of a fancy setting or cutting-edge equipment.

St. James’ Creation Interacting with ‘Cfujai’ through art
In 1999, St. James’ Settlement started a ceramic art project which became St. James’ Creation (SJC) in 2016. The platform provides a platform for people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder to create and develop a career in art. Clay is the primary medium, but members also pursue fiber art, sculpture and media art. They seek to connect with the public through exhibitions, workshops and community projects.
‘Cfujai’ (St. James’ Creation Ceramist) are rehabilitated persons under SJC. Their ceramic pieces have attracted great attention in the art and welfare sectors, and show how craft and social service can go hand in hand.
Craft & Exchange

TKO Heritage Post is a Community Involvement Project of the Home Affairs Department, Sai Kung District Council and Haven of Hope Christian Service. Built in the 1960s, the ex-Tiu Keng Leng Police Station was revitalised into a Heritage Information Centre that showcases the development of Tseung Kwan O into a new town and its rich history.
In Year 1, secondary students who joined the ‘Handmade Wellbeing’ programme learned the culture and practice of craft, before gaining insights into community surveys, research and design thinking in Year 2. They then applied their learning outcome to craft items that filled the needs of TKO Heritage Post.

To familiarise students and teachers on the prospects of a career in craft and craft entrepreneurship, the team held a Seminar-cum-teachers’ seminar on the S4 Entrepreneurship Module towards the end of Year 2.
A Realisation
Technique aside, a sense of perspective and sound communication skills are essential to an entrepreneur. 4 woodwork and ceramic artists shared their road to craft and business, and discussed with Dr. Ho Siu Kee how their background and place of operation influenced their path.
Experience and sustained growth
In the second part of the seminar, Chan Po Fung, founder of Playback Concept and Xavier Tsang, founder of BeCandle shared their 10+ years of experience running a venture in art and craft.
They told the story of their brands and how the venture went from individual to team, before discussing with Paddy Ng, co-founder of Making on Loft (MOL), how marketing strategies can help build a brand and fuel its growth.
In the third part of the seminar, Garfield Chan, co-founder of MOL briefed students on the craft entrepreneurship worksheets. The teaching kit guides students in creating their own brand, calculating product costs and setting prices, as well as promoting their offerings. This prepared students for the ensuing craft fair.

Our designs were carved out by machine, before we proceeded to polishing with sandpaper and other tools. Producing smooth faces was a tedious task. It took us anywhere from 4-5 hours to 2-3 days to complete. These products were the result of consistent reps and practice.

The Living Craft Exhibition and Craft Fair is a flagship event in Year 3. The exhibition showcased works from students at different stages of learning, and the teaching materials developed during the 3-year programme. Students gained hands-on knowledge of the culture and craft associated with making handicraft, and applied this knowledge creatively to forge everyday creations for specific user groups. Finally, they had a taste of entrepreneurship at the fair by offering custom designed and made crafts. The process was fulfilling, promoted inclusion and brought smiles to everyone.

Living Craft
Located at PMQ, the exhibition showcased crafts from 29 experienced artisans and young instructors who provided guidance to students throughout the programme. Along with student work, they were displayed at different theme areas, offering a glimpse into local artisans from different generations and how their craft form part of everyday life.
From Newbies to Masters
Nearly 300 pieces of work were on show near the entrance, all made by participants during the S3 and S4 classes. They showed how far the programme has come, and were a culmination of the students’ hard work and effort.
From Creativity to Entrepreneurship
Students and teachers from 20 participating secondary schools hosted a craft fair at PMQ’s Courtyard & Marketplace over a weekend, sharing the fruits of their learning and putting craft into practice as a business. Students sold very well at the fair in what was a memorable experience for them.
From Classroom to the Public Eye Workshops on woodwork and ceramics were held during the exhibition, giving the public a taste of craft-making.

Upon the completion of Culture and Craft lessons, students started the Creativity and Entrepreneurship module. COVID posed challenges in site visits and communication with our partners, but they were overcome thanks to the support and collaboration of the programme team, young instructors and teachers.
Students acquired creative thinking and problem-solving skills from Creativity lessons. They learned the needs of their service targets through subsequent site visits, before proceeding to the design and making of wares under the guidance of teachers and young instructors. End products were gifted to the partner organisations. The Creativity lessons bred empathy among students and showed how they can design and create wares that fit the needs of their users. To students, this was a journey of personal growth and development. Meanwhile, NGOs and social enterprise were fulfilled through receiving and using the tailor-made wares created for their users.
For Entrepreneurship, students acquired the basics of starting a business. By making use of craft techniques and creativity, they worked with each other to create products of different themes, genres and styles, which were then offered at the fair. Their products sold very well and were well-received by many visitors. The sense of achievement and fulfilment was a memorable experience for them.
The Creativity and Entrepreneurship lessons showed students what the ‘Handmade Wellbeing’ programme is all about connecting people and the community through wares while creating happiness for everyone.
