ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

For more than 40 years, the Hancock Health Foundation has supported the advancement of healthcare and wellness in and around Hancock County.

Hancock Health does not receive tax dollars and writes off approximately $1.5 million each month in uncompensated services for our patients who do not have the financial means to pay. We believe everyone deserves access to high quality care, with or without insurance. The Foundation’s programs are crucial in bridging funding gaps, providing care for those without resources and driving our population health programs. Our Annual Report outlines the support Hancock Health Foundation provides to the hospital and our community in further detail.

AMY
04 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

DEAR FRIENDS,

For the Foundation, 2023 was a year of transition and celebration. In May, Nancy Davis, who had served as Executive Director for ten years, was promoted by hospital leadership to Assistant Vice President, Guest Services. Under Nancy’s leadership, the Foundation’s endowment grew from $5.6 million to $18 million. During our June 2023 board of directors’ meeting, we recognized Nancy for her excellent leadership. Many thanks to Nancy for her contributions to the growth, broadened impact, and increased reach of the Foundation during her tenure!

Transition to a new Executive Director was seamless, with Allyson Smith taking over for Nancy from her previous role on staff. We look forward to the continued growth and increased impact of the Foundation under Allyson’s leadership. Allyson stepped into her new role with a busy event calendar for the remainder of 2023, and Allyson and Amy worked tirelessly, in addition to their regular responsibilities, to ensure that those events were all successful.

Our biggest moment of celebration was the gala to recognize the 25th Anniversary of Women Helping Women. On October 20, around 330 friends of the Foundation gathered to celebrate all that Women Helping Women has accomplished to make necessary health screenings and healthcare services available to uninsured women in our community. The story of Women Helping Women’s history, combined with the donations of over $140,000 resulting from the gala, was an inspiring reminder of the blessing of living in a community that truly cares for its own.

This year we also celebrated our Legacy Circle donors with a reception held just for them. During that event, attendees were able to visit several booths representing areas of local health care impacted by their generosity, particularly in the areas of hospice, cancer care, and mental health. We are grateful for our Legacy Circle members, who lead the way in contributing financially to the continued cause of maintaining excellence in health care services provided by Hancock Health.

As usual, our staff was busy leading the Foundation through its regular event schedule. The Foundation golf scramble was again well-attended, and it netted $55,000 for our mental health endowment. The Foundation continues to be served by many committee members who contribute their time to Foundation causes. This included the continued awarding of scholarships for health care education and the selection of Health Community Award recipients.

This summary has been by no means exhaustive. The Foundation continues to be an important and effective partner of Hancock Health – assisting in the fulfilment of Hancock Health’s mission in many meaningful ways. The Foundation endowment continues to grow through your generosity. The endowment is now a source of sustainability in the provision of funding for health care services that our community considers priorities, but which are not publicly funded or covered by insurance.

I have appreciated the opportunity to have chaired our dedicated board of directors these past two years. I look forward to continuing to serve as a member of the board and to participating in all that the Foundation will continue to do for healthcare in our community.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED,

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF SUPPORTING WOMEN’S HEALTH 2023 ANNUAL REPORT 09

This was a special year for Women Helping Women

as we celebrated the 25th anniversary with a gala.

The event was held on Friday, October 20th at Embassy Suites in Noblesville and hosted 330 community members who came together to commemorate 25 years of supporting women’s health. Since 1998, Women Helping Women has been a primary funding source for the women’s clinic at Hancock Health, which provides important healthcare services for under/uninsured women in Hancock County.

Event speakers included Dr. Monet Bowling, breast cancer surgeon, and Myra Bleill, Former Foundation Director and co-founder of Women Helping Women. We looked back at the origins of Women Helping Women, how the program has grown in size and scope since then, and the tremendous impact it has had on women in our community. Dr. Bowling shared about the increase in breast cancer diagnoses locally and the importance of getting regular screenings which can lead to earlier diagnosis and better treatment outcomes. She thanked Women Helping Women supporters for making it possible for women to receive mammograms and other health services that they otherwise would be unable to afford.

Mindy Rigney, a Hancock Health associate and breast cancer patient who received care through Women Helping Women, also shared her heartfelt story with attendees. Mindy credits Women Helping Women with giving her access to the care she needed, emotional support and education from the clinic staff and for helping to lessen the financial burden that can come with a cancer diagnosis.

Guests enjoyed bidding on silent auction items including gift baskets, experiences and more. After dinner, the live auction by auctioneer Wayne Addison raised additional funds for the clinic and included vacations, sports tickets, rare artwork, jewelry and hand-carved furniture. The program concluded with a Fund A Need to help pay for a new mammography machine.

The night didn’t end there! For the first time, the event extended beyond the conclusion of the program as guests enjoyed music by Track Seven DJ and dancing later into the evening. Guests had a great time while giving generously to support women’s healthcare. Overall, the event raised over $140,000 in net proceeds, a new record for Women Helping Women. We’re so grateful to all the volunteers, sponsors, attendees and donors who made this event a huge success.

“Breast cancer isn’t for the weak; it’s a fight. Women Helping Women helped me with that fight, and I can never say thank you enough for that.”

- MINDY RIGNEY

IMPACT OF YOUR GIFTS TO WOMEN HELPING WOMEN IN 2023

“We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to provide quality health care to uninsured and underinsured patients. We have been able to expand services especially in the areas of lab work and pelvic ultrasounds, along with our breast health screening and diagnostic services. We are the only facility in Hancock county which can provide totally funded women’s health services, thanks to the generous support of the Hancock Health Foundation.”

Fund A Need donations, combined with proceeds from previous years’ Women Helping Women events, enabled the Foundation to give $300,000 to Hancock Health to help purchase a second mammography machine for the women’s center which will allow them to see more patients and decrease wait times for mammograms.

GOLF BENEFIT

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Thank you for your continued support of Hancock Health, the Foundation, and our community!

The 45th Annual Hancock Health Foundation Golf Benefit hosted 280 golfers over two days of golf on June 14th and 15th at Royal Hylands Golf Club.

Golfers continue to rave about the top-rated course in Knightstown which provides a beautiful backdrop for our event.

Participants enjoyed nice (if slightly chilly) weather and delicious food provided by Ye Olde Bakery, Jersey Mikes, The Depot and Hancock Health Catering Services. This event would not be possible without the 68 sponsors and 40 volunteers who gave their time and financial support to make it a success.

Overall, the event raised $55,000 to support mental health and substance use treatment programs for our community. It is heartwarming to see so many community members show up to play golf in support of Hancock Health and these important programs.

2023 ANNUAL REPORT 17

FOR THE 5TH YEAR IN A ROW, OUR HOSPICE PROGRAM RECEIVED THE “SUPERIOR PERFORMER” AWARD,

HOSPICE CARE

18 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Hancock Health continues to provide excellent hospice care to our community through Suburban

Hospice and the hospital’s inpatient unit.

In 2023, more than 400 patients received end of life care which was 9% growth over the previous year. For the 5th year in a row, our hospice program received the “Superior Performer” award, a designation only awarded to 5 hospices nationwide and an outstanding indicator of the high qualify of care provided to our patients and families.

In 2024, we are launching a palliative care program to help people in our community manage the symptom burden of serious disease. Palliative care helps people who are undergoing treatment for their illness with pain, respiratory issues, fatigue and more. Our first focus will be on patients living with lung disease who hospitalize frequently due to their shortness of breath and will see these patients in our palliative care clinic. While palliative care and hospice are different, there is some overlap in patients and providers, so the hospice team is uniquely qualified to address this growing need.

Donations to the Rex A. Pasko Hospice Endowment continue to support hospice services at Hancock Health and ensure that they will be available for our community for years to come. We are particularly touched by the friends and families of hospice patients who choose to make memorial gifts to the Hancock Health Foundation in support of hospice care. Their gratitude for the care their loved one received and their generosity will help to sustain our hospice program for the future.

2023 ANNUAL REPORT 19
20 2023 ANNUAL REPORT
CANCER CARE

The Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center saw continued growth in 2023 as we’ve seen an increase in cancer diagnoses here locally and even more patients choosing Hancock Health for treatment. Dr. Monet Bowling and Dr. Anne Mattingly saw 85 new breast cancer patients in 2023, and experienced a 15% increase in breast cancer surgeries from the previous year. Overall, the Center Center saw 2,700 patients for oncology and hematology care. There was a 24% increase in the daily average number of patients seen in the infusion area (some of these receiving chemotherapy and some antibiotics), as well as a significant increase in breast, prostate and lung cancer patients treated by radiation oncology.

The Cancer Center Endowment and Cancer Current Needs Fund provide ongoing operational support for the Cancer Center, as well as long-term sustainability. We are fortunate to have generous donors who recognize the importance of having comprehensive cancer care in Hancock County. Our gratitude goes out to everyone who has made a donation to cancer care this year, and of course to Bob Wortman, who honored his late wife, Sue Ann, with a transformational gift that made it possible for the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center to be here for our community.

"Looking back, I am so thankful I chose Hancock Health for ALL of my care during 2023. There has not been one department where I didn't feel like I was family. Walking into chemo camp, which my husband so lovingly called it, was not a daunting task because my quality of care was extraordinary."

MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE MISUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMS 22 2023 ANNUAL REPORT OUR HEARTFELT THANK YOU!

As more and more people are struggling with mental health issues and addiction in our community, Hancock Health has stepped up to create programs that fill gaps in services and help people access the care they need. These programs and services continue to evolve to meet these needs, and they are having a tremendous impact on people in our community.

One change you may have noticed is a new name! Healthy365 is now officially known as the Hancock Health Connection Center. As the department has shifted its focus from overall wellness efforts to programs aimed at addressing mental health and substance misuse, a new name was chosen to better represent all they offer to the community. The Hancock Health Connection Center (HHCC) is a hub for community resources to meet social needs and prevention and intervention services related to behavioral health needs. The team of support navigators and System of Care outreach programs offer many services including QPR suicide prevention training, ACE Interface training, treatment for tobacco cessation, peer recovery services, CRAFT support groups, and more. Support navigators walk alongside patients and families to identify and remove barriers to care, address basic needs and connect patients to local resources.

BELOW ARE A FEW HIGHLIGHTS OF THE IMPACT MADE BY HHCC IN OUR COMMUNITY IN 2023:

• Support navigators helped 1,236 individuals, a 58% increase over the previous year.

• Rise Above It, the annual mental health awareness event, was held at Mt. Vernon High School with approximately 300 people in attendance.

• The team trained 230 people in QPR s uicide prevention training

• Crisis Intervention Team training was provided to 28 first responders/law enforcement.

• 12 Critical Incident Stress Management interventions were facilitated, reaching 8 6 people

• A Behavioral Health Services Line was created under the leadership of Amanda Everidge. Amanda now oversees all of H ancock Counseling & Psychiatric Services (HCPS), the Hancock Health Connection Center, Emergency Department Social Work and Chaplaincy

• In an effort to reduce the stigma for individuals struggling with Substance Use Disorder (SUD), RISE Recovery & Wellness services are being merged with HCPS. Now, all S UD/Cooccurring treatment services will be provided in the Hancock Counseling office, right next door to the H ancock Health Connection Center and under the s upervision of Director, Amanda Everidge. In 2023, a total of 120 new patients were treated for SUD and 53% of those patients received both medication management and therapy services. We’re excited to begin offering a Relapse Prevention Group starting in early 2024!

“I attended Indiana’s Whole Child Summit and there was a session with a panel of high school students. One student on the panel mentioned Rise Above It and how much he loved the activities. I just want to remind you that Rise Above It has SUCH an impact on our community!”

- SCHOOL COUNSELOR, GREENFIELD-CENTRAL COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION

Mental health and substance use treatment programs remain some of the most under-funded programs offered by Hancock Health, meaning that they do not make nearly enough to cover the actual cost of care. Because of this, support from the community has been crucial to the establishment of these programs and our ability to sustain them for the future. The Foundation’s Mental Health & Substance Use Treatment Endowment Fund was created in 2020 to provide ongoing operational support for these important programs, and by the end of 2023, over $3.4 million in gifts and pledges had been committed to this fund. This outstanding generosity demonstrates that our community truly values these services and realizes the impact they’re having on the people of Hancock County. These programs truly would not be possible without donations from the community, so thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign as a donor, volunteer or advocate. Thanks to YOU, help is available for our friends, family and neighbors who need it.

2023 ANNUAL REPORT 23 BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TEAM

IMPROVING SECURITY AT HANCOCK HEALTH

Earlier this year, Hancock Health Security Manager, Shawn Smith, stood in front of the Foundation’s Board of Directors to provide an update on the latest trends in security and efforts to enhance happening at our hospital.

It came as a surprise to many that there has been a dramatic increase in violence against hospital workers over the last several years. Since the pandemic, assaults at US hospitals have reached an all-time high and it became clear that even in places meant for healing, we are not safe from violence.

While Hancock Health had implemented several measures to improve safety including adding concealed weapon’s detectors, providing new non-lethal tools to security staff and added trainings for associates, there were additional needs that were not in budget. The most urgent need was ballistic vests to provide protection for our 19 security officers.

The Foundation called on its donors to help meet that need and, as always, they rose to the occasion. NineStar Connection generously provided a matching gift of $10,000 to support this effort and motivate others to give knowing their donations would go twice as far.

A year end appeal letter, email, social media posts and a video featuring Shawn and Allyson were used to reach donors and ask for their support. By the end of the year, we had raised over $24,000 for the security team! In addition to purchasing all the vests they need, they will also be able to purchase additional equipment including new radios. Our associates working in the security department, who put their life on the line to protect us, are so grateful that the community recognized the importance of the work they do and stepped up to give so generously in this time of need. Thank you to everyone who made a gift and especially our partner, NineStar Connect! Together, we are making Hancock Health locations for all our patients, visitors, volunteers and associates.

LEGACY CIRCLE

The Legacy Circle is made up of individuals who have committed to improving the health and wellness of our community through their support of the Hancock Health Foundation.

Membership in the Legacy Circle is given to anyone who makes a donation of $10,000 or more, payable over 10 years, to the Foundation. These donors make up the backbone of our organization and provide crucial funding for programs such as hospice, cancer care and mental health services.

A Legacy Circle appreciation event was held on September 28th at the Overlook at Briney Creek in Greenfield. It was a lovely setting for donors to gather, enjoy a nice dinner and catch up with friends who share their dedication to supporting local healthcare. Dinner was served in themed food stations set up around the room, intermixed with program stations staffed with Hancock Health associates representing hospice care, the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, the women’s clinic and the Healthy365 Connection Center. This allowed Legacy Circle members the opportunity to receive updates about the programs they’re supporting and see the impact of their gifts.

Smith, spoke briefly to share her appreciation for the donors’ continued support and emphasize the tremendous impact that their giving has had. One of the highlights of the evening was a video that was shared with attendees to say thank you to everyone who has given to the Mental Health Campaign. The video featured Sen. Mike Crider, Mayor Guy Titus, Hancock Health CEO Steve Long, Sheriff Brad Burkhart and Healthy365 program staff who each shared a specific program accomplishment made possible by donors.

To learn more about how you can become a Legacy Circle member and make a lasting impact on healthcare in our community, contact Allyson Smith at (317) 468-4106.

26 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

In 2022, the Foundation entered into a partnership with Thompson & Associates to provide complimentary values-based estate planning services for our community.

This opportunity is meant to be a gift to our donors, volunteers and others by helping them achieve financial wellness. As we entered into our second year of work with Thompson & Associates, even more individuals were able to participate and achieve their estate planning goals. Brian Cohoon, our Thompson & Associates representative, comes to Hancock Health monthly to meet with our constituents, and on average participants meet 3-4 times with Brian before receiving a comprehensive estate plan and recommendations that fit their needs. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to continuing to offer these services to the community in 2024.

“We so enjoyed working with Thompson and Associates. The process was helpful and informative. There was no pressure, hidden agendas or fine print. The goal was simply to help us make good decisions regarding our estate. We highly recommend this process!”

- K EITH AND MARNA GUENIN

MONIALS

“I think it’s important for people to know that this is not a request for donations. There are no expectations about that whatsoever. I do not have a great deal of wealth, but they helped me work through complicated family changes, identify some tax benefits, and get our plan in order, which gave us peace of mind.”

– ANONYMOUS

“It made us aware of how we could increase reduce taxes and direct more to charity without decreasing the share left for our loved ones.”

– JOE AND VICKI SMITH

“While we have a sound estate and financial plan, as confirmed by Brian, we had never taken the time to think about giving based on our own values. Our time with Brian was well-spent and helpful.”

The Thompson & Associates representative serves as your personal, trusted planning coach. For many, the process provides clarity and peace of mind. You will leave with a comprehensive estate plan recommendation that tells your story, reflects your values and fulfills your financial desires. You can share the recommendations with your own attorney or financial advisors to take the steps necessary to put your updated plan into effect. We will be happy to refer you to a local professional if needed.

WILL THEY TRY TO SELL ME SOMETHING OR ASK FOR A DONATION?

No, Thompson & Associates does not solicit funds directly or indirectly, sell any services or products, manage money or provide legal services. There are no expectations or obligations of any kind. All meetings are completely confidential; no one but the participant and the Thompson & Associates staff know what goes on in these meetings .

I ALREADY HAVE AN ESTATE PLAN. IS THERE VALUE IN THIS FOR ME?

The process will increase your understanding of your existing plan, provide a second set of eyes to ensure it accomplishes what you envisioned, and possibly educate you on some important giving and tax options that might interest you.

DO I NEED TO BE WEALTHY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS?

Absolutely not. This is available to everyone, and Thompson & Associates works with people with all levels of income and wealth. Everyone needs an estate plan, and this is an opportunity to get one for free!

HEALTHY COMMUNITY AWARDS

30 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Sandy Miller and Vernon Township have been named recipients of the Hancock Health Foundation’s 2023 Healthy Community Awards.

Named in honor of the Foundation’s first Executive Director, the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award is given each year to an individual for exemplary and innovative efforts to create positive change in the health of our community. This year’s recipient, Sandy Miller, has lived in Greenfield for many years. After retiring from a career as a lawyer with Anthem, Sandy focused her time on making Greenfield and Hancock County a better place in which to live, work and raise a family.

Sandy has served on the Board of Directors for the Hancock Health Foundation and continues to Chair its Signature Gifts Committee and serve on the Women Helping Women Committee. Sandy also served as a Board member with the Community Foundation of Hancock County where she has been instrumental in setting up the Women’s Resource Center.

Sandy also serves on the Board of Directors of the Greenfield Central School Foundation, Talitha Koum Recovery House, is a member of the Upsilon Chapter of Tri Kappa, Bradley United Methodist Church, Hancock County Herb society and is President of the Friends of the Theater Group.

SANDY WAS NOMINATED BY SUSIE BROOME AND KATHY LOCKE WHO SAID,

“It is extremely difficult to decide what activities to include because there are so many! Sandy is very generous with her time and talents, and we are blessed as a community to have her.”

With this award, Sandy receives a $1,000 donation to the charity of her choice, and Sandy has chosen to support Talitha Koum with her donation.

In 2014, the Foundation established the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award, named in honor of the former President & CEO of Hancock Regional Hospital. Through this award, the Hancock Health Foundation recognizes a hospital program or local organization whose efforts are creating positive change in the health of our local communities. The 2023 recipient of the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award is Vernon Township.

While in existence since 1836, Vernon Township has seen tremendous growth and accomplishments since undergoing significant changes in the past five years. In 2019, a professional fire department was founded, and in 2020 an EMS Division and Fire Territory were formed to better serve the community. The organization has also focused on serving mental health needs in collaboration with Hancock Health, helping with the county crisis team and training staff in mental health first aid.

Additionally, a community garden is now growing and helping to fulfill the fruit and vegetable needs of the community. Partnering with their local food pantry, the garden includes weekly donations of fresh food. The organization also engaged the public with CPR and child seat trainings, public safety programs in Mt. Vernon Schools and coordinating CASA kid care bags for Hancock County youth.

NOMINATORS FROM VERNON TOWNSHIP SAID,

“As a high growth area of our community, our township needed a vision to provide for the health and wellbeing of its more than 20,000 residents. These achievements would typically take a decade or more to attain, but Vernon Township has done it all in less than 5 years.”

The nomination of Vernon Township was submitted by Trustee Florence May, Vernon Township Board member Marybeth Sears and Fire Chief Mark Elder. The township receives a $1,000 donation with this award.

The Healthy365 Connection Center was also nominated for the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award. Nominees for the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award include Dr. Lori Deemer, Mandy Gray, Shelby Sweet and Dr. Georgia Knotek, DDS. All of this year’s nominees are wonderful examples of people working together to make a positive change in the health of our community.

2023 ANNUAL REPORT 31

Let’s Invest for Tomorrow, also known as LIFT, is the employee giving program at Hancock Health. Over 800 associates give, many through their paycheck, to the Foundation regularly. Donations to LIFT are split 50/50; half of every gift supports hospital programs such as mental health services, and half support the Associate Crisis Fund. This fund provides financial assistance for associates who are experiencing a personal financial crisis. In 2023, the Associate Crisis Fund provided $37,429 in assistance to 34 associates for help with medical bills, car repair, rent/ mortgage, utilities, and even rebuilding after a devastating house fire. LIFT also sponsors the Giving Tree which provides gifts for Hancock Health associates’ families who are struggling financially around the holidays. In 2023, 11 families received holiday gifts through the Giving Tree.

The LIFT Committee also works to recognize and support all Hancock Health associates for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Each year during National Hospital Week, the committee hosts a cornhole tournament, giveaways and more to engage associates in fun activities. Hancock Health associates continue to show their generosity and commitment to improving health and wellness in our community through participation in LIFT and we’re so grateful to all the LIFT members and the LIFT Committee for making this possible!
