We’re here for the health of our community. MAKING
For more than 40 years, the Hancock Health Foundation has supported the advancement of healthcare and wellness in and around Hancock County.
Hancock Health does not receive tax dollars and writes off approximately 2.4 million each month in uncompensated services and to provide care for patients who do not have financial means to pay. We believe everyone deserves access to high quality care, with or without insurance. The Foundation’s work is crucial in supporting under-funded services, covering care for those with limited resources and providing educational programs focused on health and wellness. Our Annual Report outlines the support Hancock Health Foundation provides to the hospital and our community in further detail.

In 2024, the Foundation continued to build on the successes of the past years. While we did not have an active campaign in 2024, we did not slow down. The Foundation was able to award scholarships to 24 local students, totaling $41,500 to support their education in nursing, radiologic technology and a variety of other healthcare fields. These scholarships are very meaningful to the students as they continue their studies.
The annual Women Helping Women Celebration was a record-setting event. More than 370 community members attended and over $154,000 was raised. The most ever! The basketball theme of “Hoops for Women’s Health” was a lot of fun for a great cause. The clinic provides a variety of healthcare services for women in our community who are uninsured/low income. Thanks to the generosity of so many, the clinic will have enough funding for the coming year and hopes to serve even more women in 2025. The annual golf benefit was also a huge success, raising $58,000 to support scholarships and our Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Fund.
Let’s Invest in Tomorrow or LIFT is the employee giving program which supports Hancock Health
associates in times of need. The Associate Crisis Fund provided financial assistance to 36 families, totaling over $40,000. Aiding those in financial need is part of our mission and one we do with gratitude.
We continue to partner with Thompson & Associates to offer complimentary estate planning. In 2024, 29 individuals/couples participated in this process. We look forward to continuing to offer this service in 2025.
Also in 2024, the Foundation hosted the annual and very popular Healthcare Update presented by our CEO, Steve Long. Further, we celebrated our Legacy Circle by hosting an appreciation event for nearly 100 of our largest donors at Daniel’s Vineyard. The impact of their giving is meaningful and appreciated beyond words.
As our endowments have grown and our community continues to make local healthcare a charitable priority, the Foundation was able to give back significantly to the hospital. In 2024, the Foundation gave over $663,000 to Hancock Health in support of hospice, cancer care, security, women’s services and mental health programs.
And to think, this is just a brief summary of the things the Foundation was able to do in 2024. We are looking forward to what 2025 might bring, including the potential for a new capital campaign. With the help of our dedicated staff, board, and community members, the future of the Hancock Health Foundation is incredibly bright.

If there was one word to describe the 2025 Women Helping Women Celebration, it would be FUN! The event was held on Friday, October 25th at Embassy Suites- Noblesville. With the Hoops for Women’s Health theme, attendees dressed in their finest basketball fan attire and represented their favorite teams. Freddy Fever made an appearance during cocktail hour, and guests enjoyed getting photos and high fives with the Fever mascot.
Everyone had a chance to win club level Pacers tickets with the Pop-A-Shot competition sponsored by the Kersey Family, and Amanda Bryan was the big winner! Attendees had a great time getting pictures with props at the photo booth, which they could take home as a souvenir from the evening, and the DJ played tunes as people danced and mingled late into the evening.
It was a record-setting year for Women Helping Women, with 370 attendees and over $154,000 raised in support of the women’s clinic at Hancock Health.
The women’s clinic provides a variety of healthcare services for women in East Central Indiana who are low income or without health insurance, and the annual Women Helping Women Celebration is the primary funding source for this clinic.
The featured speaker this year was Andrea Morehead, an Emmy-winning journalist and breast cancer survivor. Andrea shared about her breast cancer journey and commended the audience for their support of women’s health services and providing healthcare for those with limited resources.
The live and silent auction offered many opportunities for guests to bid on gift baskets, vacations and other unique experiences. Auctioneer Wayne Addison helped raise additional funds for the clinic by facilitating an exciting live auction including several friendly bidding wars! One lucky bidder took home an autographed Caitlin Clark jersey, which was signed by the WBNA Player of the Year and Fever star just for this occasion.
Another highlight from this year’s event was being featured on the local TV program, Indy Now. Allyson participated in a segment live on air to promote the event and Women Helping Women’s mission.
The program wrapped up with our annual Fund A Need where guests made donations in real time to help bring AI breast density assessment software to all mammography at Hancock Health. In a matter of minutes, we reached our goal and raised over $25,000 to purchase the software. This cutting-edge technology uses artificial intelligence to simplify and standardize breast density reporting and help clinicians to detect cancer more efficiently and accurately. The software has now been implemented and will be standard for every mammogram offered by Hancock Health.
The 26th annual Women Helping Women Celebration was a huge success, thanks to the hard work of the Women Helping Women Committee and all of the donors, sponsors and attendees who gave their support.
Because of the generosity of so many, the women’s clinic at Hancock Health will be able to provide even more life-saving services in the coming year for women in our community.

The Hancock Health Foundation’s 46th Annual Golf Benefit was held on June 13th and 14th at Royal Hylands Golf Club in Knightstown. We hosted 270 golfers over three flights and were fortunate to have perfect weather both days of the event. With the help of more than 40 volunteers, the outing included a putting contest, skins game, closest to the pin and hole-in-one competitions, in addition to cash prizes for each flight’s first and second place teams. As golfers finished their round, they were greeted with a cold beverage, camaraderie and the scent of grilled ribeye being prepared by Chef Ty Hunt and his team. As usual, the drink station, featuring our world famous bloody Mary bar, was a hit, and the Foundation team enjoyed visiting with golfers as they swung by for a refreshment.
The 2024 golf benefit was a huge success, raising over $58,000 for the Hancock Health Foundation. Proceeds were split evenly between our scholarship programs and the Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Fund, which supports the Hancock Health Connection Center.

In 2025, Hancock Health continued to provide excellent end-of-life care for patients and families through Suburban Hospice and Hancock Health’s Inpatient Transitions Unit. In July, the hospice team was once again ranked in the top 5% of the nation for patient satisfaction scores. Suburban Hospice also received the SHP Best Award for the fifth consecutive year, one of only 7 agencies in the country to do so. The award recognizes hospice providers that consistently provide high quality service to families and caregivers of patients receiving hospice care.
2024 was a time of growth and change for the hospice program. Long-time Hospice Administrator, Jeannie Crowe, retired from her position but remains employed as a consultant. April Stillinger, Director of Nursing, took over as Administrator of Suburban Hospice. Jeannie was instrumental in the growth of Hancock’s hospice program and the creation of the inpatient unit, and we wish her all the best in retirement!
The hospice program saw a tremendous increase in its daily census from the previous year.
In 2023, the average number of daily patients was 57, and in 2024, that number climbed to 68 patients per day. Overall, the team cared for 350 patients last year, and 65 patients received inpatient care in the Transitions Unit.
In 2024, Hancock Health launched a palliative care program. Palliative care is a medical specialty supporting people with chronic diseases including cancer, lung and heart disease and neurological diseases. Our palliative care team has extensive training in conducting “goals of care” conversations. The purpose of these conversations is to help people determine what kind and how much care they want in order to live their best lives. The palliative team meets patients who are hospitalized and also follows patients in their outpatient clinic in order to help the patient manage the symptoms of their disease for the highest possible quality of life.
In 2024, the team had more than 300 encounters with patients. The relationship with the palliative care team helps those people avoid rehospitalizations, helps them continue their disease treatment and find the care that best fits their goals.
Donations to the Rex A. Pasko Hospice Endowment support the operations of the Transitions Unit, a beautiful, quiet space that feels more like a home than a hospital. In this special unit, hospice patients and their families receive end-of-life care and support when pain and symptoms are too much to manage at home, or when a caregiver needs respite. Because reimbursement for inpatient hospice care is so low, Hancock Health relies on these donations to ensure that this space and this care is available for hospice patients long-term. Those who have experienced hospice care personally know the tremendous value of it, and we’re so grateful to the families who choose to designate memorial donations to support hospice care and those who give in memory of friends and loved ones.
As the number of patients cared for at the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center continues to grow, so too does the need for increased space, new equipment and expanded services.
In 2024, the Cancer Center saw a 5.7% increase in active patients from the previous year, with 2,784 patients treated.
Cancer Center patient, Jess Schedler, was so grateful after receiving his treatment that he was moved to hold his own fundraiser in support of cancer care. During the month of November, he made a commitment to run two miles every day, and he asked his family and friends to donate to the Walker Cancer Survivors Fund. Through this fund, which was established by Mrs. Suzanne Walker, we support cancer patient needs including nutritional services, prescription assistance, support groups and more. Together, Jess and his supporters raised $2,000 which was donated to the Walker Fund in support of patients at the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center. Jess’s strength, generosity and desire to help others is an inspiration to us all!
The Foundation holds several funds that support Hancock Health’s cancer care program and patients in a variety of ways. The Cancer Care Endowment provides annual operational support for the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, helping to maintain the physical space, hire top experts in the field and purchase the latest in technology and equipment.
The number of daily infusion patients increased by 6.5%, and the types of infusions being offered is expanding as well. In order to accommodate all types of infusions ordered by Hancock Health physicians, the Cancer Center plans to open a benign infusion clinic in 2025 across the hall from the current medical oncology space. This will give us the space to provide infusions to patients referred by neurologists, rheumatologists, gastroenterologists and other specialties.
Donations from the community allowed approximately 60 patients to participate in a clinical exercise program specifically designed for cancer patients free of charge. Additionally, nearly 300 teddy bears were purchased to give cancer patients upon completion of their treatment, thanks to the Walker Cancer Survivors Fund.
It is clear that the need for cancer care in our community is growing right alongside the population, and the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center is here to fill this need.
As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, we are able to utilize experts at the #1 hospital in the world, The Mayo Clinic, which has also been beneficial to our cancer patients and doctors. E-consults were utilized for medical and radiation oncology and hematology. Hancock patients looking for a second opinion or with rare and difficult-to-diagnose illnesses could be referred directly to Mayo Clinic, cutting down significantly on the wait times of an average patient. Our oncology team presented at 6 different e-tumor boards and was present at another 10. This incredible opportunity to have the best of the best weigh-in on our treatment options for our patients cannot be overstated. Lives were saved, and unknown options were presented because of our fantastic team advocating for patients.
“I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2024 and went through treatment in both the radiation and medical oncology departments at the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center. I can’t say enough about the staff there. Everybody is so kind and so caring. They treated me like part of their family and not just another patient. They are very professional and still very sensitive to my needs and to my family. I want to say thank you to each and every one of you. I love you all.”
LINDA JONES

Hancock Health continues to lead the charge for mental health and substance misuse treatment across East Central Indiana, made possible in part through the generosity of donors to the Foundation. The Hancock Health Connection Center, which opened in 2020, provides a variety of crucial services to those in our community who are struggling, as well as other service providers.
The Connection Center continued its community outreach including Crisis Intervention Team Training to help first responders and law enforcement respond appropriately in a mental health crisis. Community events like the annual Community Night Out and Rise Above It provided education and resources to help reduce the stigmas surrounding mental health needs.
• The Hancock Health Connection Center assisted a total of 1,383 individuals in 2024.
• The Mobile Response Team transitioned to Hancock Health in July and supported 91 individuals who were in mental health or substance use distress. The team responds to patients wherever they may be within Hancock County and can provide services in real time including transportation to an acute stabilization unit, detox, sober living or treatment facility.
• Our Justice Team supported 260 individuals who are within the Justice Intercept (incarcerated, post-incarceration, probation or community corrections.)
• Our general navigators supported 1,032 individuals with any identified social determinants of health needs, which can include mental health or substance misuse, as well as housing, food, insurance, etc.
• Our Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team provided a total of 39 Debriefings reaching 217 people who experienced a traumatic event.
• QPR Suicide Prevention Trainings were provided to 524 people in 2024.
• Hancock Health Connection Center spoke at the NAMI Justice Conference about the justice collaboration program in Hancock County and represented women’s health at the first ever Indy Mavens Women’s Health Summit.
In 2025, the Hancock Health Connection Center will be moving to their new location, just west of North State Street on Muskegon Dr. This new space will bring together all of Hancock Health’s behavioral health services under one roof, fostering collaboration among providers and convenience for patients. The new donor wall recognizing those who made major gifts to the Foundation’s Mental Health & Substance Use Treatment Campaign will also be located in this space.
We hosted our first ever Mental Health Conversation with approximately 100 community stakeholders, including Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, Senator Mike Crider and Mayor Guy Titus.
In September, members of the Foundation’s Legacy Circle gathered at Daniel’s Vineyard for our annual appreciation event. This year we invited members to “Meet the Leadership”, and donors were given the opportunity to socialize with Hancock Health physicians, directors and board members, learn about their work with the hospital and ask questions.
In addition to thanking donors, we wanted to show our Legacy Circle members the tremendous impact of their giving. That evening the Foundation debuted a new video about the Legacy Circle, highlighting the history of this giving club and all of the different programs and projects that members have supported over the years.
The Legacy Circle is made up of individuals of who committed to improving health and wellness of our community through their support of the Hancock Health Foundation. Membership is given to anyone who makes a donation of $10,000 or more, payable over 10 years, to the Foundation. These donors make up the backbone of our organization and provide crucial funding for programs such as hospice, cancer care, the women’s clinic and mental health services.

Through our partnership with Thompson & Associates, the Hancock Health Foundation offers complimentary estate planning services for individuals in our community. In 2024, 29 individuals/couples participated in the process, which meets people where they are and helps them develop an estate plan that meets their needs and goals. Some people come to us with no plan at all, others have an outdated plan that needs revised, and some are just seeking a second opinion. There is no cost to participants, the process is completely confidential, and they do not sell anything or fundraise. These services are simply available for those who need it with no obligation.
To learn more about the Thompson & Associates process, you can watch a short video online at ceplan.com/gift or contact Allyson in the Foundation Office. We are currently booking appointments for mid-late 2025.
“We so enjoyed working with Thompson and Associates. The process was helpful and informative. There was no pressure, hidden agendas or fine print. The goal was simply to help us make good decisions regarding our estate. We highly recommend this process!”
KEITH AND MARNA GUENIN
The Thompson & Associates representative serves as your personal, trusted planning coach. For many, the process provides clarity and peace of mind. You will leave with a comprehensive estate plan recommendation that tells your story, reflects your values and fulfills your financial desires. You can share the recommendations with your own attorney or financial advisors to take the steps necessary to put your updated plan into effect. We will be happy to refer you to a local professional if needed.
No, Thompson & Associates does not solicit funds directly or indirectly, sell any services or products, manage money or provide legal services. There are no expectations or obligations of any kind. All meetings are completely confidential; no one but the participant and the Thompson & Associates staff know what goes on in these meetings.
The process will increase your understanding of your existing plan, provide a second set of eyes to ensure it accomplishes what you envisioned, and possibly educate you on some important giving and tax options that might interest you.
Absolutely not. This is available to everyone, and Thompson & Associates works with people with all levels of income and wealth. Everyone needs an estate plan, and this is an opportunity to get one for free!
The Hancock Health Foundation’s Scholarship programs are made possible by generous contributions from the community. Since 1977, the Foundation has awarded over 300 scholarships totaling more than $540,000 to students in and around Hancock County.
In 2024, the Hancock Health Foundation awarded a total of $41,500 in scholarships to 24 local students who are in a healthcare or wellness field of study. The goal of our scholarship program is to encourage entry into health and wellness professions, support local students and develop future leaders for Hancock Health.
The 2024 Edith Zike Nursing Scholarship recipients included: Chloe Albright, Allyson Beattie, McKenna Georgi, Kaitlyn Laffey, Kennedy Peggs and Sydney Springman. These students each received $2,000 toward their tuition.
The Foundation awarded the 2024 John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarship to Taylor Titus. Taylor is attending Ball State and participating in the Family Nurse Practitioner program to obtain her Master of Science in Nursing. This scholarship covered her full tuition for the 2024-2025 school year. The John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarships are made possible through the generous gift from the estate of Mr. John F. Stickford. Recipients of this scholarship commit to working as a nurse in Hancock or Shelby County for each year that they receive this scholarship.
The Foundation’s School of Radiologic Technology Scholarship was awarded to individuals currently enrolled in the hospital’s School of Radiologic Technology. This year’s recipients include Leah Puckett, Karlee Reynolds, Kara Sizemore, Emma Theobald, Josie Wagner and Mackenzie White. They each receive $1,000 toward their tuition.
The Bryan and Virginia Burney School of Radiologic Technology Scholarship was awarded to Reece Powell and will cover his full tuition for both years of the program. Ross Vaughn received the $500 Richard A. Silver, MD Clinical Excellence Award for being top of the class.
The Foundation also awarded its Healthcare and Wellness Scholarship to eight deserving students. This scholarship was created to support local students and encourage entry into healthcare and wellness professions. Each student received $2,000 toward their tuition. The 2024 recipients are Brenna Bastin, Audrey Brinkruff, Chelsea Hancock, Macy Huber, Liliann Hunt, Mackenzie Polster, Kambell Trapp and Kennedy Trapp.
A new scholarship was established this year, thanks to a generous gift from Sharon Morris Makely, in memory of her father, former hospital administrator CL “Corky” Morris. The CL Morris Healthcare Management and Administration Scholarship will provide $3,000 annually to a current Hancock Health associate studying healthcare management or administration.
Mrs. Makely said while creating the scholarship, “Just as my father benefited from the encouragement and support he received throughout his 40-year career in healthcare administration, I hope this scholarship’s financial assistance will help future Hancock Health leaders pave their own way.”
Susan Geesa and the Women’s Resource Center have been named recipients of the Hancock Health Foundation’s 2024 Healthy Community Awards.
Named in honor of the Foundation’s first Executive Director, the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award is given each year to an individual for exemplary and innovative efforts to create positive change in the health of our community. This year’s recipient, Susan Geesa, has lived and worked as a teacher in the Hancock County Community for over 40 years. Even in retirement, she continues to provide teaching support at Eastern Hancock School Corporation and at Zion Lutheran.
HER NOMINATOR, BECKY HIDAY, STATED:
“The focus of her community involvement is limitless as shown by the variety of organizations in which she participates and the countless volunteer hours she gives to each of them.”
Those organizations include, but are not limited to, The Arc of Hancock County, Alpha Delta Kappa, the Sister Cities Program, Veteran’s Honor Flight, Tri Kappa, Hancock Health Foundation, Nameless Creek Youth Camp, Kenneth Butler Soup Kitchen, and the Hancock County Retired Teachers Association.
In addition to all her volunteer work, Susan supports her family in countless ways and encourages them in their own community service efforts. Her nomination can be summed up with these words, “She didn’t retire when she stopped teaching, she just shifted gears to many other ways to help people and enrich the lives of others in her community.”
With this award, Susan received a $1,000 donation to the charity of her choice, and Susan has chosen to support several organizations. The following each received $100: Hancock County Food Pantry, Kenneth Butler Soup Kitchen, Talitha Koum, Hancock County Retired Teachers Association, Nameless Creek Youth Camp, Sister Cities of Greenfield, The Arc of Hancock County, Indy Honor Flight, Jeffrey Geesa Memorial Scholarship Fund, Hancock Health Foundation- Mental Health Fund.
In 2014, the Foundation established the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award, named in honor of the former President & CEO of Hancock Regional Hospital. Through this award, the Hancock Health Foundation recognizes a hospital program or local organization whose efforts are creating positive change in the health of our local communities. The 2024 recipient of the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award is the Women’s Resource Center.
The mission of the Women’s Resource Center is to provide mentoring, guidance and connection to programs and services that help women and their families achieve economic self-sufficiency. This year, the agency has helped 81 individuals with housing, including financial assistance, identifying and visiting housing options, meeting with landlords, completing housing applications and housing assistance forms, and even with insurance premiums.
The agency connects women to community resources and helps guide them through working with multiple agencies to meet their needs. They assist clients with accessing medical services, including providing or security medical transportation, completing assistance applications, signing up for Medicaid and paying for prescriptions. They also educate clients on using their medical insurance to its fullest. They have also helped young girls with feminine hygiene needs at school through a community collection.
The agency sets goals with clients and mentors them to help reach their goals. Ultimately, they work to teach skills to women to help them be more successful and self-sufficient. The Women’s Resource Center was nominated by Kim Heim and received a $1,000 donation with this award.
Let’s Invest for Tomorrow (LIFT) is made up of more than 850 Hancock Health associates who give back to support the organization and each other in times of need. This year, donations to LIFT supported the Associate Crisis Fund, Caring Community Partners, and the Mental Health & Substance Use Treatment Fund.
The Associate Crisis Fund provided financial assistance for 36 associates in 2024, totaling over $40,000. This year, we’ve helped associates with legal fees during custody battles, paid high unexpected medical bills, funeral costs for loved ones, car repairs, utilities on the verge of being shut off, rent or mortgage payments for those at risk of losing their homes, and much more.
During National Hospital Week in May, the LIFT team celebrated Hancock Health associates with our annual LIFT cornhole tournament, free drinks, giveaways and prizes.
The LIFT Committee, made up of Hancock Health associates, works to plan activities that recognize and support Hancock Health associates, and gives thoughtful consideration to each request to the Associate Crisis Fund.
Thank you to our LIFT Committee, and to every Hancock Health associate who supports LIFT!
The LIFT Giving Tree provided holiday gifts for 13 Hancock Health associate families who were struggling financially.
Greenfield-Central High School Soccer Boosters donated over $15,000 from their Kickin Cancer fundraisers. These funds were given to support the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center and will help to ensure that we can continue providing comprehensive cancer care for our community.
Buck Creek Township Fire Department held a t-shirt fundraiser in support of Women Helping Women, and the Firefighters Union Local 4787 matched the proceeds to make even more of an impact.
Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling of Greenfield donated proceeds from their Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraisers to Women Helping Women. Together, they raised $1,200 from customers and staff, which was then matched by Summers for a total donation of $2,400.
