national rank for 2020 by

The College of Pharmacy celebrated many achievements in 2020, beginning with the Centennial Celebration of the College’s founding in 1920. Although our in-person celebration was rescheduled for 2021, it is truly remarkable to reach such a milestone and see the College continue to progress for the last 100 years, at some moments defying the odds.

In that same spirit, we believe the most significant accomplishment of the College in 2020 was our labor and success in transitioning and supporting the efforts of our student pharmacists in their educational endeavors in a most turbulent year. Our faculty and staff, and the students themselves, showed true resolve in adapting to distancebased learning and adjusting to unparalleled challenges throughout the academic year. Because of their efforts, the Class of 2020 was able to graduate on time and College became a role model for other departments within the University. For that we are truly proud. The College is currently completing strategic and other planning initiatives to be implemented in 2021 to set the course for the beginning of the next 100 years of success.

Academic Programs

The College of Pharmacy offers the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, MS and PhD degrees in the Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and an MS degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology. The College also offers postgraduate pharmacy residency programs, and faculty participate in residency programs offered by healthcare institutions. In 2020, the College was ranked #59 among all Colleges of Pharmacy in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. This ranking is particularly noteworthy, as it is based solely on the responses from peer surveys completed by deans, program directors, and senior faculty from other institutions.

As this report was being prepared, the College received the American Psychological Association (APA) Designation Committee for Postdoctoral Education and Training Programs in Psychopharmacology for Prescriptive Authority to the MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology program. This APA designation is for a three-year period and makes the ISU program one of only five programs in the nation.

The College graduated the Inaugural Doctor of Pharmacy Class at the Anchorage, Alaska Campus. The College conducted a very successful virtual graduation and White Coat Ceremony, and many other events, in response to COVID-19.

All academic programs were successfully transitioned to distance-based learning for the spring 2020 semester and then to hyflex (option of classroom and distance-based) for the fall 2020 semester, with the hyflexbased program to be continued into 2021.

Last, but very noteworthy, many experiential education sites essential to the PharmD program had to cancel and/ or postpone clinical rotations as they responded to the pandemic. Through the tireless efforts of the Office of Experiential Education, the College was able to adapt rotation schedules to enable all fourth professional year students to complete their advance pharmacy practice experiences and graduate on time.

Research

Capacity to conduct cutting-edge research was greatly expanded in 2020. First, the College acquired a 3D bioprinting system. ISU is one of the few higher education institutions in the country to acquire a 3D printer for the purpose of bioprinting to print or reproduce a material made up of viable living cells. With this technology, researchers can print skin, and several other structures that imitate natural human tissue. Cells and other matter from cultured human tissue are transferred into “ink” cartridges, and while parts of it may look like a regular computer printer, 3D printers are capable of printing different layers with different materials simultaneously. This technology is a tremendous asset to the College’s research focus on cancer and other diseases.

Second, the College is establishing a laboratory on the Meridian campus that utilizes Zebrafish for behavioral studies. This laboratory supports the research of faculty in both Psychopharmacology and Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The College is an early adopter of the Zebrafish model for behavioral studies.

Productivity in seeking and receiving research support was remarkable in 2020. Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences funded research increased over 400 percent last year. The College saw 19 grants funded for just under $2.5 million. Indicative of the commitment to growing research and the faculty’s dedication to research, the College submitted 43 grants seeking nearly $30 million.

In conjunction with the Centennial Celebration, the College is in the final year of a capital campaign to raise $15 million to support academic and research needs. The College is currently seeking external foundation support to fund renovation of Leonard Hall on the Pocatello campus. The renovation is extensive at a cost of approximately $17 million, and will build state-of-the-art laboratories to support the research mission of the College.

Scholarship

The College saw productive contribution to the medical and scientific literature with 28 manuscripts and 5 book chapters submitted and published in 2020. In addition, over 20 medical and scientific presentations and posters were delivered, with an Idaho Society of Health-System Pharmacists First Place Pharmacist Poster award.

Patient Care

The College and University initiated the transfer of the Bengal Pharmacy enterprise from the Idaho State University Foundation to the College of Pharmacy. Bengal Pharmacy operates pharmacy practices in Pocatello, Arco, Challis, Council, and Kendrick, Idaho. These pharmacy locations provide a much-needed healthcare access point in rural areas of the state.

Also, the College initiated the establishment of an integrated mental health clinic in association with the MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology program. The clinic will open in early 2021 and is located on the Meridian campus.

COVID-19 Response

Service programs offered by the College are critical in many ways. During 2020, the focus of our service was directed at responding to the pandemic. Through a grant from the state of Idaho, the College significantly expanded the availability of COVID-19 testing in community pharmacies across the state. The College is currently ramping up to supply pharmacists and student pharmacists for COVID-19 vaccine initiatives in Idaho and Alaska. This effort is in addition to staffing ongoing influenza immunization clinics. To further support the immunizing manpower needed in the coming months, the College is conducting training programs for pharmacy technicians consistent with the U.S. Department of Health and Human services expansion of immunizing authority to technicians. Lastly, the College loaned a Thermo Scientific Revco RLE Series Ultra-Low freezer to the Southeastern Idaho Public Health for storing COVID-19 vaccines at -86 degrees Celsius.
