HD Ningbo School, an experimental boarding school that is making waves in the realm of education in the city, is something not easily missed. The grey concrete exterior of their Haishu branch proudly displays the school’s name with it’s fanciful coat of arms, one of the many things that makes HD more distinct than other schools in the city. Entering through the gate, there is a playground area and open glass windows gazing into a main hall with shiny wood floors, seats and desks. It is the end of the day, and students are busy taking part in extracurricular activities, including golf, martial arts, art and more. Even after the academic day the school is lively, and this liveliness, not just a focus on academics and studying, is what sets HD apart.

What is HD Ningbo School? “It’s a private Chinese school where kids learn Chinese and maths but also learn English to a high level and science in a creative way” headmaster Warren Johnston tells me. “They’re exposed to international approaches to P.E., and are taught by international and Chinese teachers, immersing them in the subjects they are learning. ” What sets HD apart from other international schools in the city is that it’s bilingual. Students are taught 50% in English and 50% in Chinese. For instance, Johnston explains that subjects like math are taught in Chinese with Chinese standards, because math is taught at a higher level in the country. Likewise, they also teach students problem solving and critical thinking skills not normally taught in Chinese schools.

The mission of the school is simple: Education Creates Character. It is not just through coursework, but a vast amount of extracurricular activities and access to quality materials and resources that aid in this mission. Its with this mindset that HD and Johnston hope to help the students become more open-minded and ready to set out into a globalized world.

HD Ningbo School has also opened a new campus in Yinzhou, which is larger than the Haishu campus, able to accommodate more students and more things. For instance, the new facility has larger classrooms which don't just have tables and desks, but small areas for reading and math classes as well. There is a swimming pool where new swimming classes can take place, a full golf course where students like those practicing in the main hall upon entering have more room to play, living facilities for the school’s boarding students, and state-of-the-art facilities for students and staff.

The future is bright for HD Ningbo School, and the New Year will bring new things for it’s students and faculty. The mission will stay the same though, and that’s providing a quality education that creates character, the best way to prepare students for today’s world.

宁波赫德是实验性双语学校，它在宁波的 影响力和带来的变化是难以忽视的。来到坐落 于海曙区的分校，大大的校名和漂亮的校徽在 灰色的水泥外墙上格外醒目。这是赫德实验学 校和宁波其他学校不同的地方之一。走进学校 大门，首先映入眼帘的是操场，透过操场尽头 的一排落地玻璃，可以看到主教学楼闪亮的木 地板和桌椅。正是临近放学的时候，很多学生 在进行课外活动，包括高尔夫球、武术和美术 等等。即便是放学以后，校园内也很有生气， 让赫德学校与众不同的可不仅仅是学术。

宁波赫德是一所怎样的学校？“这是一所 中国私立学校，双语教学为学生创造了一种环 境，可以浸润于两种语言之中，同时提高中英 文水平。”庄华伦校长告诉我，“孩子们以创造 性的方式学习数学和自然科学，也接受国际化 的体育教学。”

双语教学是赫德学校的特色。学生学习中 英文的时间基本是五五开，比如说，庄华伦校 长告诉我们，在赫德学校，像数学这样的科目 用中文教授，遵循中国标准，因为国内的数学 教学水平更高；同样地，他们也教学生普通中 国学校不教的问题解决和评判性思维技能。

学校的理念很简单：教育塑造人格。要实 现这个理念不能仅靠课程作业，还有大量课外 活动、高质量的教材和资源。庄华伦校长告诉 我。正是抱着这样的想法，赫德学校和庄华伦 校长希望能培养出更多思想开放的国际化人 才。

宁波赫德还在鄞州区开设了新校区，比海 曙校区更大，可以容纳更多的学生和更好的设 施。比如说，新校区的教室更为宽敞，里面不 仅安置了桌椅，还有用于阅读和数学课的小区 域；有游泳池可以用于上游泳课，整片的的高 尔夫球场可供对此感兴趣的学生练习；寄宿学 生的住宿条件得到进一步改善，师生也能够享 受一流的现代化设备。

宁波鄞州赫德实验学校和宁波海曙赫德 实验学校的前景非常光明。新年给学生和教职 工带来了新气象，但学校的宗旨不会改变，那 就是提供可以发展与培养学生人格的高质量 教学，帮助他们为未来进入社会做好准备。
