Freehand drawings:
Tools, Techniques, and Methods
Course description:
A freehand sketching and drawing class that teaches methods of using a variety of drawing tools and techniques to record architecture and landscape environments. It also focuses on teaching different types of perspective and multiple techniques to draw shade and shadows. The range of drawing media covers pencil, ink, markers, and watercolors. The class and drawing subjects are typically outside and inside spaces, especially the American University in Cairo campus.
Introduction
Exercise 1 (Homework)
Assignemt description:
We were required to draw different patterns using engineering drawing tools.
Paper size: A3 - 2 sheets
Reflection:
I found this assignment a little boring, as it was all based on shapes and guidelines without any rendering techniques or colors.
Feedback:
In this assignment, I was told that I had to improve my neatness and draw some missing guidelines in order to get the right shape.
Grade: 80%
Freehand and pencil sketching I
Exercise 2 (Classwork)
Assignemt description:
Choose a simple single object. Analyze the structure of the object into basic geometric shapes. Try to render it using the basic pencil sketching techniques.
Paper size: A3

I received good feedback on this assignment as I chose a good object and rendered in a good way.
Grade: 96%
Exercise 3 (Homework)
Assignemt description:
We were required to draw an object from different six angles and render only one in Pencil and keep the rest as single line structure.
Paper size: A3
Reflection:
In my opinion, this was the hardest one to draw, but I tried my best while doing it. However, the rest was easy and it was an interseting assignment for me.
Feedback:
I received positive feedback on my assignment. They highlighted my ability to clearly communicate the form and perspective through different angles and the contrast between the detailed rendering and simplified lines was well-received.
Grade: 96%
Perspective I and pencil sketching II:
03 Exercise 4 (Classwork)
Assignemt description:
We were asked, using the basic concepts of perspective, to try and draw a single cubic object (fountain) from two directions, one point perspective and two point perspective, and render both in pencil.
Paper size: A3 - 2 sheets
Reflection:
This assignment gave me an opportunity to apply and refine my understanding of basic perspective techniques, especially one-point and two-point perspective.
Feedback:
This feedback emphasized my strong understanding of perspective principles, especially in how I used vanishing points and dawing lines to create a realistic sense of depth in both viws.
Grade: 96%
Exercise 5 (Homework)
Assignemt description:
We were required to draw an exterior scene (Basily Area).
Paper size: A3
Exterior scene
Reflection:
This assignment challenged me to apply the principles of perspective and composition in a real-world context. The goal was to capture the environment while considering the details of the overall of the scene.
Feedback:
This feedback helped me notice some problem with my work while highlighting several strengths in my work, especially my ability to accurately capture the perspective of the scene.
Grade: 97%
Perspective II
Assignemt description:
Draw an exterior on-point perspective (Arcades).
Paper size: A3
04
Exercise 6 (Classwork)
Reflection:
This assignment, in my opinion, was very interesting and allowed me to find the correct vanishing point in order to create the arcades, which was the most challenging part.
Feedback:
I received very helpful feedback on this assignment. They pointed out that the composition was well organized and the perspective of the arcades created a good sense of depth. They also suggested some techniques in order to improve it
Grade: 95%
Exercise 7 (Homework)
Assignemt description:
Observing shade and shadow, we were required to draw the exterior cubic object in the CP, AUC campus, observing shadows during five different daily shadow hours (8 am, 10 am, 12 pm, 02 om, and 04 pm)
Paper size: A3
Reflection:
I find this assignment very interesting yet very tiring, as I had to go back every two hours in order to capture the shadows in the right time.
Feedback:
The feedback on this assignment was positive, noting that I did a good job capturing the five different shadows at different times of the day.
Grade: 95%
Exercise 8 (Classwork) 05
Assignemt description:
Draw the exterior cubic object in the CP, AUC campus, from different views showing shade and shadows. Try to apply the basic rules of shade and shadow to figure out how your position and sun location affect your results.
Paper size: A3
Reflection:
This assignment gave me the opportunity to explore the different types of shadows and how to draw them in perspective.
Grade: 95%
Feedback:
The feedback on this assignment was positive; it highlighted how well I observed the shadows and drew them in a right way.
Exercise 9 (Homework)
Assignemt description:
Draw an interior two-point perspective.
Paper size: A3
Before rendering in watercolors
Reflection:
I find this assignment very challenging and rewarding. I focused more on the rendering and placing the vanishing points correctly in order to get the right perspective.
Feedback:
The feedback emphasized that my drawing showed an understanding of two-point perspective with good alignment and angles.
Grade: 97%
Introduction to colors

Pencil colors Watercolors Ink
06 Exercise 10 (Classwork)
Assignemt description:
Render the rest of the different views of Ex 3 using different rendering techniques (pencil, ink, colored pensils, markers, and watercolors).
Paper size: A3
Reflection:
This assignment was fun and interesting because it gave me the opportunity to explore how different rendering techniques can be used to shift the same object in multiple ways.
Feedback:
The feedback on this assignment was mainly an expression of my improvements in rendering using different techniques. However, it also included a few tips in order to improve blending techniques using watercolors.
Grade: 96%
Drawing architecture elements and rendering techniques (P02)
Assignemt description:
We were required to project a simple building (Layount, plan, elevations, section, and isometric).
Paper size: A2
07
Reflection:
In my opinion, the size of the paper was a bit challenging at first; however, as I was getting into the project, I got more comfortable and used to it. Furthermore, this was an excellent exercise in developing my drawing and rendering ski.lls
Feedback:
I received very good feedback on this project. It emphasized my strengths in how I handled the layout and plan drawings. The proportions were noted to be accurate and I was told that the rendering techniques I used were really good.

A Tale of a Space: Exploring the
Works of Hassan Fathey
(P03)
Assignemt description:
This project invites us to delve into the architectural genius of Hassan Fathey through the lens of storytelling. By selecting one of his notable works, we were asked to create a visual narrative that captures the essence and experience of the chosen space. The theme “A Tale of a Space” will guide us in expressing our insights and artistic skills through a series of sequential sketches.
Paper size: A1
Project requirments:
Selection of work: Choose one building
Narrative development: Storytelling
Sketching techniques: 2D drawings, perspective shots, and diagrammatic representations.
Mixed media rendering: Diverse techniques and combination of media.
Reflection:
I find this project very interesting as a final project. It gave me the opportunity to explore the architectural genius Hassan Fathy through storytelling. By focusing on one of his notable spaces, I was able to explore a design that highlighted sustainability and the natural integration of structures into their surroundings. This project has also allowed me to not only appreciate the quality of Hassan Fathy’s architecture but also to see the emotional aspects of the space.
Feedback:
I was told that my project was very unique, as I chose to do it on black paper, use white as my rendering color, and add a little bit of color. The way I have captured the essence of the space through these sketches was very different and demonstrates an understanding of the quality in architecture. I could have just provided more context and storytelling.
