My name is Hamza Rahma, an undergraduate to be with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Arizona (UA). This portfolio represents my journey and a catalog of my progression since I was introduced to the vast world of architecture. Coming from Bahrain, a country based on tradition and culture, to a city like Tucson, where diversity and modernism take place, I have had the chance to embrace my skills and ambition for this field in both manners. My architectural studies in Bahrain allowed me to situate myself on this path and decide to expand my knowledge in a different environment. Pursuing my degree in Arizona opened a new window of perceiving architecture by introducing me to the different aspects and possibilities of architectural design.

Design can be approached. The conceptual side of design brought me to a new realization and taught me how architecture could be related to every aspect of our lives and in every space we occupy. Furthermore, having the experience of living and learning architecture in an urban city helped me to deeply grasp the role that architecture plays as a guide to the city and its inhabitants. The journey I have been through has built my understanding of architecture and its impact on our social life and surrounding, yet it has not come to an end. My goal is to pursue my education in this field and expand my knowledge to a further extent to develop my understanding and capabilities through diverse possibilities. I’m looking forward to the future that is waiting for me.

Design build

Designing Vision, Constructing Reality 1737 e.7th Street, Tuscon Arizona

When I first joined the construction class, I was a complete novice, unfamiliar with even basic tools like a hammer. But with the invaluable guidance and support of my instructor and peers, I’ve grown immensely in knowledge and skills. My first day on a construction site was an exhilarating, handson experience. We worked on tasks like removing temporary waterproofing from a house and repositioning walls. I played a key role in cutting and fitting a new top plate, a crucial part of the structure.

My responsibilities evolved to handling the sheathing, which involved transporting, cutting, and ensuring each piece fit perfectly over the walls. I also undertook precise work in trimming down the bathroom walls, adjusting wall frames, and cutting blocking and sheathing for a snug fit.

Working on the roof was particularly challenging, requiring strict safety measures and precision in aligning panels and nailing them firmly. .

Following the wall repairs, my role shifted to handling the sheathing. This was a vital step in adding the final layers to the walls. My task involved transporting and precisely cutting the sheathing material, a process that demanded attention to detail and careful handling due to its size and weight.

Throughout this journey, I’ve grown from a beginner with no tool knowledge to a skilled individual capable of handling complex construction tasks. Each step of this journey has been a learning curve, filled with challenges, teamwork, and a deep sense of achievement.

Architectural Systems

Revealing the Conceptually Operative HARVEST, Tuscon Arizona Our urban areas must integrate with our agriculture system. The way we live and consume poses a severe threat to our health and our ecosystem’s health, as has been increasingly evident in recent decades. In addition, we are being forced by climate change to reconsider our way of life and integrate agriculture once more into our urban fabric. the proposed building appeals to all of our senses and is designed in order to reconnect with nature and landscape. Reintroducing food production into daily life will democratize the food system and promote food security in a modern city such as Tuscon, Arizona. The introduction of farming and the growth through the landscape allows a healthy relationship between the community and architecture. The site plan showcases four different hatch; each hatch represents a season that blooms crops that will be consumed in the farmer’s market and the cafe.

This project introduces a new grain of reliable food source that allows the community to repay agriculture. Historically, living and farming were intertwined because there were no effective transportation or refrigeration systems. Thus both had to be close to one another. Therefore, every ancient community had a congested region with a food distribution facility in the middle and agriculture all around.

The proposed cafe allows the exploration of Food; Food has the power to bring together people from many walks of life. Food conveys information about a person’s identity and origins. It crosses borders, time zones, and generations. Even the smell of Food can transport us to a distant land or our early years. By learning more about different countries’ cuisines, we can better understand our past, geography, climate, economy, and other characteristics that make each nation or place distinctive. In addition, cultural barriers can be more easily bridged when meals are shared.

In the project above, lightweight wood construction contrasts with its heavy primary concrete structure.

It is ideally organized through the building’s floor, ceiling, walls, roof, and custom furniture to implement a grid perspective, as the plans suggest. The grid strategy is apparent in the floor plans and the simple forms the wall embodies in the section. Furthermore, the flat roof that hovers over the interior and exteriors of the building emphasizes its downward, horizontal adjustment. Notably, the perceived atmospheric experience has been achieved through a mixture of outside glass walls that provide a glimpse into the building—forming the materiality of the inner space to give the building the desired tree-like structural support while creating an element of privacy through the separation of the grid-based spaces. Overall, the floor, walls, ceilings, and custom furniture emphasize the grid institution of the design that delivers a notion of functions within its areas.

Design for Change

Designing structures that engage all of our senses will help us rediscover our connection to the outdoors and the surrounding environment. In addition, the agriculture system will become more democratic, and food security will be promoted in contemporary cities by reintroducing food production into daily life.

Light

Design for Resources

The availability to capture natural light significantly impacts building inhabitants’ well-being. While an absence of daylight could result in poorly lit areas, too much light could cause irritating glare. Therefore, building design considers sun shading mechanisms, orientation, and glass-to-wall proportions to maximize daylight and views.

Technology

Design for Integration

This project utilizes technology that supports the integration of various high-tech components and designed systems. Take advantage of the site’s exposure and turn it into renewable energy used within the building. With that being said, the placement of the arches allows an operable system that harvests rainwater, ventile the interior, and use indirect sunlight to light the interior.

Water

Design for Water Living in a dry climate allows the appreciation of the presence of water and its givingness. Water’s flowing and dynamic properties have impacted this design. The project celebrates the element of water through a shallow pool existing in between the building. Although the pool of water is able to cool its surroundings during hot summer waves, the body of water will remain cooler than air during the daytime.

Energy Design for Energy This building aims to improve its occupants’ health, comfort, and quality of use while also being energy efficient.

The efficiency is expressed throughout the passive water and chilled beam systems. The hydronic water system is able to cool the interior in the summer and warm the interior in the winter. The usage of a radiant pool within this project aims to cool the water since it is exposed to the radiant sky at night. Alternately, in the winter, temperatures at noon are the warmest, and the exposed water would be used to regulate temperature. , over

Mindfulness + Justice Center Intercare, Patagonia Arizona The project creates a host for disabled children utilizing elderly people is one that prioritizes intergenerational care and community engagement. The design approach for this type of facility should embrace accessibility, safety, and comfort for both the children and the elderly residents.

The architecture should promote a nurturing and supportive environment where disabled children can thrive, learn and grow while elderly residents feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment by contributing to the well-being of the children.

In terms of layout, the design should include adaptable spaces that can accommodate the diverse needs of both the children and elderly residents. It should have ample open spaces to encourage socialization and interaction, as well as private spaces to allow for privacy and rest. The building’s infrastructure should be built with durability and sustainability in mind, making it a resilient and long-lasting facility.

The design also consider incorporating natural elements such as green spaces, gardens, and open courtyards, which can help create a calming atmosphere and provide a soothing environment for the children and elderly. The facility’s location should be convenient, allowing for ease of access and transportation for both the residents and visitors.

Overall, the creation of a host for disabled children utilizing the elderly is a thoughtful and innovative approach to community building. By integrating the needs of both populations, it creates a unique and mutually beneficial opportunity for everyone involved. The design should promote inclusivity, encourage intergenerational connections, and enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Revealing the spaces Tree house, mount lemmon arizona This architecture statement describes a project located in Mount Lemmon that utilizes the site’s natural features to create a harmonious and functional design. The design features a ramped bridge that connects all elements of the project, creating a sense of unity. The spaces are designed to meet the basic needs of human functioning and the roofs and ramps have a dramatic curvature to break down the typical cube-like structure of buildings. The design is inspired by the primary organelles of a cell and later evolved to incorporate the symbiotic relationship of mushrooms, symbolized by the scattering of spaces and the pathway that connects everything together. The design aims to create a unique and harmonious relationship between the building and its natural surroundings.

The project captures dramatic scenarios of different types of arts and performances. Dance is a movement of the human body through space over time. The human body experiences architecture and its spatial qualities through movement over time. To think about space created for and by the body as the standard linkage between dance and architecture. I utilized the dance performance theatre as a vehicle of design investigation by employing spatial concepts as perceived in dance to inform architectural space design. I can address the creative process by exchanging ideas from three artistic formalities. This project intends to find an architectural solution for the dance performance, theatre, and art gallery, which can inform the users of dance and allow dance to disclose the definition of the architectural space. I hope the images and the content can expand the vision and interpretation of architecture, dance, and art.

The bedrooms have been carefully organized to accommodate (ADA) requirements.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a broad civil law that has the force of a constitutional amendment. It necessitates equitable access to society and equal opportunities. Therefore, the organization of the entire project adjusts and accommodates a user with a wheelchair comfortably and allows everyone to experience the building the same way. Universal design has the potential to positively change society and spaces so that everyone can participate in the community and bring value to any workplace regardless of their abilities. For example, in my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity of working with someone who was partially impaired. Unfortunately, there was a time when he would never get things done due to his disability. It took him 10 min to get to class, in comparison to his classmates who could get to class in less than a minute. This was a leading inspiration to make everyone have the same experience utilizing the building.

Charles Correa was one of the few really Indian architects who successfully merged worldwide modernism into the Indian setting without slavishly replicating it. He understood the intricate interplay between culture, customs, and design better than any top-level foreign architect since he was an Indian native. The project has a single principle at its roots: an individual plot for each dwelling to allow for future expansion as and when necessary. Low-income housing architecture can provide a number of benefits to both the residents and the surrounding community. Some of the benefits of well-designed low-income housing.

Improved living conditions: Good low-income housing architecture can provide safe, comfortable, and functional living spaces that meet the needs of residents. Increased accessibility: Low-income housing that is designed with accessibility in mind can make it easier for people with disabilities or mobility issues to live independently. Unit aggregation impacts the scale and shape of spatially aggregated urban maturation. It explores those impacts on the results of a variety of spatial spaces that are repeated. In addition, using the methods of aggregation inspired by Charles Correa as he created his Cabelnager Township, India In its most basic form, a wall is a tool for defining space. The wall creates separation by defining space limitations and producing bulk and volume. The typical house with four walls and a roof has been disturbed, creating an urban dialog. Flow and circulation is identical because it also deals with how humans, who are the lifeblood of our buildings, move across space. People take paths through and around buildings are known as circulation routes.A tree in an urban setting has several advantages, including physical and mental wellness, cooler air, oxygen addition, and carbon capture. Furthermore, the flow of trees draws people together, making a community seem more inclusive and entire.

As observed the facades of downtown Tuscon and found that the “active” facades (represented in royal blue on the map) were more engaging and interactive with pedestrians, while the “passive” facades (represented in light blue) were closed and uninviting. The observer’s experience and understanding were shaped by the horizontal landscape vision that is typical of neurotypical individuals and the relationship between figure and ground in their surroundings.

This architecture highlights the design considerations for a project that aims to respond to the surrounding site and urban context. The main focal points are the views of the mountain and the bush to the northwest, and the sidewalk and park to the northeast. The design takes into account the extension of the park into the project’s landscape by incorporating similar trees and allowing for a relationship between the public space and sidewalk. On the second floor, the user experiences a framed view of the park and mountain. The house is designed with a private courtyard that creates a connection between the interior and exterior spaces and allows the user to experience the life of the trees. The courtyard also has an irrigation system that drains rainwater during the monsoon season and emphasizes the theme of living.

The placement to the ground allows the exploration of shade and sunlight and structure to the figureground. Exploring these elements in this project allowed the significance of a geomatic triangular pattern to be executed into the roof and all the way to the ground this allows an interpretation of a cohesive body structure that coordinates with the same triangle rhythm. This allowed a further exploration of shade and light where the structure that overlooks to the Catalina mountains and allowing users to enjoy the view of the mountains. The structure adapts to the hot summer rays in Arizona, as for the monsoon season the triangle structure has three trian gle wholes as they serve the function of an arrogation system, they collecting water rain and water the trees. The location of this project coordinated to the neighboring site” which is a commercial site”. A stair bridge has been adapted to the site to increase this connection between both locations. As this services the neighboring site and allows workers from the neighboring site to take their 60
