“How can symbiotic relationships between human and nature contribute towards a more ecological and built architectural environment.”

Primary Function: Research Centre My proposals primary function is a research centre consisting of working with honey bees within the community of southwark.The ongoing decline of honey bees has inspired this scheme and sheer lack of biodiversity within the local community is leading to a undeveloped eco system and neglect crucial pollinators within the area. This centre will collect data upon how honey bee’s move, migrate and pollinate the eco system. This centre will teach locals about the importance of honey bees and their impact upon the supply of food.

Secondary Function: Garden Centre: The area is a perfect urban environment and honey bees have adapted to living in urban cities thus having a garden centre that focuses on plants that aid the bee population would improve the local eco system and encourage biodiversity within London. The garden centre will grow and sell plants/ flowers with the help of locals mimicking the bee community on people working together.

The voids within the design structure and the sleek exterior form allows natural sunlight to breach in, allowing sunlight to be reached to the lower floors.

The structure is positioned at 45 degree angle allowing maximum sunlight within the building but the voids and narrow clay shape control the amount of sunlight penetrating the building.

Facade: The Facade or cladding for these structures are prefabricated using 3D printing. This is a new technological and sustainable way of construction. The thick layering due to the 3d printing creates a very well insulted environment during winter and keeping the spaces cool during summer.

WALEKER:

Public art celebrating the weaving heritage of the Colombian community in their iconic national colours.The woven straps are an example of the skillful triple weave produced by the Wayuu people, a tradition that is passed down from mother to daughter.They say that it was the spider, waleker in Wayuu, that taught the people how to create the beautiful pattern.

Concept:

SOUTH AMERICA

This diagram aims to highlight how the colours and wrapping around the trees are meant to encourage interaction due to the absurdity of this installation in an everyday unused civic environment. Taking on board our research and analysis, we came up with an overall design that: Disrupts the desire line cutting through the site.

Design Development:

It is important to note that it is located in Elephant & Castle, and while there it is hard to ignore the strong identity this area has with Latin America, especially Colombians. However, through gentrification this community that has developed an intrinsic identity with the area is being slowly but surely “moved out.”

This led us to question; how can we celebrate the heritage of these communities through our work?

Collage Concept Elevation:

Even though there is a wide mix of Latin Americans, one of the leading nationalities is Colombian, and therefore we investigated Colombian culture in particular. We soon found the rich history of textiles and weaving, highlighted with the Wayuu people.

The patterning and design of traditional weaving is iconic, even in popular culture due to the timeless geometries and symbols these skilled women work into their clothes, baskets, hammocks; the installation aims to be inspired by this craft.

Overall Design

There were several iterations for these designs, some being a single wrapping, others being a labyrinth of layers, however we decided to keep to three wrappings for simplicity but also to keep with the three national colours of Colombia. Dr Victoria Watson’s Air Grid installation and Christo’s Running Fence had a major influence upon this project.

The woven straps are created by weaving with the triple weave method used by the Wayuu people. This is usually used to create hammocks, when woven at a much larger scale and for a longer period.The stretched string are measured and cut to length, based on their specific wrappings.

To ensure ease of transportation to site, the strings were wrapped around short sticks that would then be ceremonially unravelled on site.The notched sticks are used to ensure that the stretched string wraps around the trees in a controlled manner. This would help with creating the perspectival effect we desired in relation to the Air Grid.

TEA-TERRACE: Whilst working in my year out, I was able to work for a company called Style building Group where they allowed me to work on several different types of projects which were a combination of commercial and residential projects. Additionally worked privately and independently with clients carrying out surveys and acted as an interior design consultant.

Tea Terrace Facade:

SITE-SURVEYING: This project involved surveying a site for client and creating some existing plans, elevations and 3d model. The purpose of this project was to create a clean and simple architectural drawings to understand space and structure for an extension project which currently ongoing.

MOTHER-HUB:

Our project aims to create this safe birthing environment where women can be advised and guided by the elders in the community and by wholesome organizations giving the women the opportunity to be mothers and more, such as learning new trades and skills thus increasing employability. Within the space we designed an amphitheater, which embraces local culture of gathering and socializing, also allowing women to network, debate and speak freely, where they may be restricted at home. We have a sustainable methodology where majority of our materials are reused and locally sourced such as the tires, bamboo, sand clay, and straw. In particular the tire structural walls which naturally insulates the interior spaces and keeping the building structurally sound.

The circular bamboo passage which circulates through the structure provides easy access to the functions whilst privatizing the spaces. The structure is also sloped to allow rain water to be harvested and which is naturally filtered and accessible through the well in the centre of the courtyard providing clean drinking water for women and locals.

Our project for the women’s house in the city of Seidou aims to create a space where women can feel safe, empowered and liberated. In our proposal we have designed a maternity centre alongside a workshop business element.

Through our research we have discovered in Senegal and in Seidou where women do not have access to a safe or hygienic birthing facilities.

Also, the women whom are giving birth are generally relatively young with little guidance in motherhood.

INNENFOR: The project allows visitors full cohesion with the Geiranger Fjord, as the proposed design is encapsulated within the mountain beneath the historic farm of Skageflå, which is strategically placed for ease of access and with an awe-inspiring view of the majestic Seven Sisters. To assimilate a unique sensory experience, on the landscapes lies a monolithic 360 degrees viewing point then the users journey commences down in a cave like structure where they delve into a pool, soothing the user from a strenuous hike whilst admiring the Fjords natural beauty. Exploring contemplation through various degrees of light and temperatures, designed to arouse curiosity and sharpen other senses.

CO-LAMP-O-NATION: Co-lamp-o-nation is based on Amsterdam’s growing tourist industry and harmonization of cultures within the city. Our installation includes recognized light pieces from 6 nations, which have a prominent and growing presence in the cities tourism market; France, U.K, India, China, Middle East and the U.S. They are attached onto the historic Amsterdam lamppost(not existing one) representing the city. Co-lampo-nation explores positive disruption initiated by the travel and tourism industry in particular Amsterdam, where many locals have complained about the city becoming overcrowded and causing issues such as ‘littering, traffic and pavement hindrance’. As these concerns are valid, but we believe tourism is a positive disrupter, as it transports and allows an infusion of cultures, there for our art installation celebrates this by connecting some of these cultural icons in terms of light as an extension of Amsterdam.

Detail Section: This is a cut through section of the arm extension showing how the hooks clip on to the metal arms to allow the lanterns/lights to hang firmly.

Key: Spikes: (Alternative Method) There will be pre-drilled holes into the base allowing spikes to be added if the structure is placed on soil/grass. This spikes are 550mm in length and go through the metal base into the ground to allow a firm/solid structure.
