Dear Parent/ Carer,

I am delighted to think that you have chosen to read this prospectus with a view to sending your child to Hampton Lakes Primary School. We are a school that has had an incredibly exciting journey; resulting in our absolutely amazing children being educated in a state of the art, beautiful, brand new building, with modern resources that support the teaching and learning of today’s children and fantastically committed staff that live and breathe our schools vision and values.

I consider my role as Head of School to be an incredible privilege and I thoroughly enjoy working with our children, their families and our team of staff, to create and now develop Hampton Lakes to be a truly fantastic school for children to play and learn. As an educator, I am passionate about providing our little people the opportunity to embrace their childhood fully and believe learning through play equips our children to become resilient, critical thinkers that paves the way for a journey of learning that is intrinsically motivated. I believe that children should love their school days and see each day as a new day to learn something new, in an environment that is safe, caring and supportive. Children need to know that adults believe in their capabilities and as such will challenge them to take risks with their learning.

I am incredibly proud of our school and hope that you will get a good flavour of what it is like to play and learn at Hampton Lakes by reading through our prospectus, looking at our Website and following our Social Media. I hope to meet you in the coming weeks and months and hope you will be very happy to have chosen this school for your little person.

Yours sincerely

Transitions into Hampton Lakes EYFS

Children and young people naturally pass through a number of stages as they grow and develop. Often they are expected to cope with changes, such as movement from nursery to primary, but we think it is important to appreciate how these changes can impact upon the children and indeed their parents..

• Home visits

• Pre-school visits

• Stay and Play sessions

• Welcome to School evenings

• Stay and Play sessions for Reception children and their parents/carers

• Welcome to the Year Group curriculum evenings

Children with SEN-D and those identified as at risk of struggling at transition points, have a longer, supported transition, which includes a high degree of parental involvement.

The first few weeks at school The school day

We think starting school is a very important milestone in the life of a child and as such we want to invest time in making sure that your child really does get to know the adults who will be working with them, helping them to feel safe, secure and settled. Our staggered approach to starting school goes a long way to securing this aim.

EYFS Curriculum

At Hampton Lakes we follow the new Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, of which there are four guiding principles.

These are:

•every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured •children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships

•children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers

• children develop and learn in different ways (and at different rates)

We believe that all areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three areas, the prime areas, are:

•communication and language

•physical development

•personal, social and emotional development

We also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

•literacy

•mathematics

•understanding the world

•expressive arts and design

• Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

• Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

• Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

• Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest. We use “Letters and Sounds”to deliver a daily 20 minute phonic session.

4

•Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measure.

•Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

•Expressive arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

During the school day your child will be able to choose from a range of child initiated or adult led activities. The teachers and TAs will encourage the children to choose from a range of different experiences both indoors and outdoors and will monitor the children’s interests.

At all times the children will be supervised by the Reception staff, but the level of adult involvement in their playing and learning will vary from day-to-day and activity-to-activity. Some activities will be completely child initiated, enabling the children to choose their own resources and toys to engage in play and learning; some activities will be adult guided or led, including phonics and reading sessions, teaching new knowledge or skills and some activities will have a balance of child initiation and adult support or guidance.

During the day the children will have the opportunity to use the outdoor learning environment, which presents a different range of experiences, activities and challenges to the indoor learning environments of the classrooms. The outdoor area, or garden, is used by Reception children, however the children in Reception may also use the playground or school field for some of their outdoor learning experiences.

Key Stage 1 & 2

We are excited by the design of our thematic curriculum, which has been carefully planned with our children’s development, abilities and interests at its core. The skills and knowledge which children need to develop are carefully mapped, based upon the framework of the National Curriculum, to ensure that each child is happy and confident to rise to the challenge of their learning. Children will move up into Year 1 which will be closely aligned to the practice of their Reception Year.

The key aims of our curriculum are for pupils to:

• learn to read and write, as well as becoming mathematicians, preparing them for the next stage of their education and allowing them to be confident individuals;

• learn how to understand themselves and manage their emotions, understanding others better;

• understand and explain the world around them now and from the past;

• be active, compete in competitions and work with others in a team, learning how to be a humble winner and resilient loser;

• be creative, practice, rehearse and perform with others;

• understand other cultures, beliefs and languages;

• learn about sustainable living, understanding global environmental issues.

Pupils will have the opportunity to do this through:

• accessing high-quality English and mathematics lessons and reading a rich selection of books;

• talking and celebrating the use of spoken language;

• using modern and high quality technology;

• RHSE, RE, values-based education, and play;

• Understanding the World, learning and interacting with members of their community;

• sports tournaments and other competitions across the curriculum;

• Expressive Arts and Design, with opportunities to perform;

• learning languages;

• access to an enriched curriculum that includes; cooking, gardening, yoga and mindfulness

School Dinners

All children in infant classes (Reception, Y1 and Y2) are entitled to a free school meal. Cucina provide our very tasty school lunches, offering from a selection of hot and cold options, the choice of either a meat or vegetarian meal, including a delicious desert and a drink. Our meals are served in the school hall. Children are encouraged to develop independence with making choices, cutting up their food and tidying away after themselves. Our team of adults support the children in the hall at this time.

Healthy Snacks

EYFS/ Key Stage 1 - At Hampton Lakes Primary School we will register with the Cool Milk Scheme and the National School Fruit Scheme to promote healthy eating in the EYFS and Key Stage 1. We do not provide children with nuts or nut based products, and ask that children do not bring them into school.

Rewards and Sanctions

Behaviour

At Hampton Lakes we expect high standards of behaviour at all times. Children have the right to learn and staff have the right to enjoy their working day. It is important that we recognise there is always a reason for poor behaviour and that everyone can improve.

We strive to create an environment that promotes positive behaviour and attitudes towards learning and as such there are many opportunities to reward our children:

• Verbal Praise: Praise for good work, trying hard, achieving, being helpful and kind

• Wow Awards: Public recognition of work out of school for example, sports, clubs, challenges

• Head of School Awards: Achievement Assembly

• House Points: Collective approach to achievement, celebrated by individuals initially followed by a collective

• Lunchtime Awards

• Stickers

• Attendance Awards: Termly recognition of 100% attendance and improved attendance.

Sanctions

We have the motto "It’s Good to be Green" and all children will start the day on green, however sometimes things can go wrong, and whilst staff need to teach children about right and wrong, children also need to take responsibility for their behaviour and we will teach the motto "up to you"; allowing for three chances. If a childs behaviour is distracting learning they will be asked to stop, and moved onto yellow. They will be reminded that it is "up to you" but if the inappropriate behaviour continues and the child continues to disrupt learning, they will be moved down to orange with the message that they are at risk of removal. If they continue to disrupt the learning they will be removed from class, to another class where they will have reflection time and will be asked to produce a piece of work appropriate to their age and development, and will be informed that this will now result in a letter home. The class teacher will complete a standardised letter tailoring it to the specific incident that has occurred. Copies of all letters will be kept in the Pastoral Folder.

9

We expect and will ensure that all staff and visitors to Hampton Lakes Primary School will be alert to signs of abuse and neglect and will follow the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) procedures to ensure that children receive appropriate and effective support and protection.

We think you should know that the law requires all school staff to pass on information which gives rise to a concern about a child’s welfare; including risk from neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Where possible, any concerns raised will be discussed with you as parents or carers and the identified action will be shared. Where the school believes that a referral should be made to Children’s Social Care this will also be discussed with you, except in circumstances where such discussions may place the child at increased risk of significant harm.

We will take advice from Children’s Social Care when school staff have reasonable cause to suspect a child may be suffering or is likely to suffer significant harm. Occasionally, concerns are passed on which are later shown to be unfounded. We appreciate that this can be distressing for families but hope that you will see that our staff will only ever act in the best interests of our children and that our main priority is to safeguard our children and ensure their wellbeing.

School Trips/Educational Visits

We think that an enriched educational experience is a fantastic way of bringing learning to life. We will aim to have a variety of visitors to the school as well as finding exciting opportunities to take the children out and about in their local community and slightly further afield. We will always inform you of these intentions and on occasion may ask for a voluntary contribution to help cover the costs of transport, entrance fees and expertise.

Medicine

If, following a bout of illness, your child requires medication (e.g. antibiotics) this can be administered in school by our staff. We should only accept medication which has been prescribed by a doctor to be administered four times a day. Medication must be handed in to the school office in the morning, in the original prescription bottle. You will then need to complete a form to give your consent for the medication to be administered in school.

10

Attendance

We hope our children will love their learning experience so much that they do not want to have time off school as we know that strong attendance ensures our children have every opportunity to achieve their potential. Good attendance will enhance your child’s ability to make good, close friendships, and will ensure that they do not miss out on the valuable learning that takes place whilst they are in school. Ultimately it prepares them for further study and eventually the world of work.

In accordance with government guidelines, no absence will be authorised except in exceptional circumstances such as bereavement. No term time holidays will be authorised.

If you do experience difficulties with getting your child to come to school please do come and talk to your class teacher, who will be able to provide an avenue of support for you. Where attendance falls below 90%, letters will be sent home to parents to engage them in boosting this figure again. If there is no improvement, attendance meetings are held.
