Dear Hampton University Friends & Family, I am honored to present the 2023-2024 Annual Report for Hampton University, showcasing a year of exceptional progress and transformative initiatives as we continue “Elevating Hampton Excellence.” This year has brought significant advancements in academics, research, and campus infrastructure, reflecting our unwavering commitment to excellence.
Our pursuit of academic distinction has resulted in a second consecutive year of increased enrollment, attracting a diverse and elite student body. This growth highlights the strong reputation of Hampton University, while our esteemed faculty continues to inspire and mentor, ensuring we remain a model of scholarly achievement.
Additionally, the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute stands as a testament to our leadership in safely and precisely targeting cancer while effectively promoting less damage to healthy tissue, reduced side effects, and improved quality of life during and after treatment. As one of only eight such facilities in the United States, it offers hope to countless individuals and furthers scientific discovery.
In addition, we have upgraded our campus broadband infrastructure to 100G, ensuring that our students and faculty have access to cutting-edge digital resources and enhanced connectivity for academic and research endeavors.
Operational improvements have been a key focus, with the renovation of 14 buildings and the transition to an environmentally friendly district water system. These enhancements not only serve our community but also reflect our commitment to sustainability. Together, these efforts exemplify the spirit of excellence that defines Hampton University.
Further, our athletics program continues to excel, with student-athletes achieving remarkable success both in competition and in the classroom. We believe through athletics we nurture physical strength while instilling the values of teamwork, perseverance, and leadership.
As we reflect on this past year’s accomplishments, it is clear that Hampton University remains a community committed to empowering each member to reach their full potential.

Unprecedented Growth and Retention for Second Consecutive Year
For the second year in a row, Hampton University has experienced a significant surge in applications and enrollment, reinforcing its position as a leading institution for higher education.
The University has received over 17,000 applications for the 2024-25 academic year, a substantial increase from the 13,000-plus applications submitted the previous year.
This increase in applications is a testament to Hampton’s reputation as a premier institution for higher education. The commitment to academic excellence, innovative programs, and an environment conducive to learning continues to attract talented students from across the nation and the world.
The surge in applications is accompanied by a historic increase in enrollment. For the 2024-2025 academic year, Hampton University has seen a 34% rise in new student enrollment over the past two years, with over 1,200 students set to join the student body. This marks a record rate

This investment has paved the way for the Prudential-Hampton Fellows Program, which offers our students mentorship, hands-on experience, and real-world exposure to the financial services industry.
With support from PGIM, Prudential’s asset management arm, the School of Business has integrated Bloomberg Terminals into its curriculum. Visits from Deloitte, PWC, KPMG, EY, and other Big 4 accounting firms have opened doors for internships and networking, providing invaluable career development opportunities.
Tree Titans, Financial Literacy Bowl Champions
One of the standout events of the year was the Dollar Tree Case Competition, where teams of students tackled real-world business challenges. The Tree Titans from the Marketing Department secured first place and a $10,000 prize for their strategy to grow Dollar Tree’s Health and Beauty section. Our students achieved victory in the Inaugural HBCU Financial Literacy Bowl, led by Dr. Sylvia Rose, assistant dean of the School of Business. This competition focused on promoting financial literacy among HBCU students, and our team’s exceptional performance solidified our position as a leader in financial education.

Architecture on the Global Stage
Our Architecture students made waves internationally when their work was featured in the Saturday Edition of The Guardian Newspaper in Trinidad & Tobago. As part of their Urban Design Travel Studio, students demonstrated their innovative approach to solving urban challenges, further solidifying SEAA’s global impact.
Hands-On Learning through Immersive Internships
Practical experience is key at SEAA. With Amazon’s support, SEAA offers cloud-based robotics research, infrastructure upgrades, and diverse STEM programs. Through a prestigious partnership with Longbow, students have completed more than 1,100 drone missions, mastering mission planning, drone operations, and data analysis. These missions, carried out in
collaboration with NASA Langley Research Center, have solidified our students as top-tier drone pilots in the state.
Open Doors Through Industry Connections
SEAA’s strong partnerships with industry leaders continue to provide students with unparalleled opportunities. This year, in collaboration with United Airlines, SEAA hosted a Student Day at Dulles International Airport. Students toured a Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner and connected with The Hampton Six — a group of United Airlines captains who are Hampton alumni. It was an inspiring event, showcasing the diverse career paths in aviation while giving students an inside look into the industry.

One example is the Annual Conference on the Black Family, an annual event that highlights the strengths and challenges of Black families across our country. The Conference presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to scholar and pioneer Dr. Andrew Billingsley. The Center partners with churches and schools committed to highlighting the cultural attributes of Black families and increasing the number of stable marriages and intact families in the Black community.

This year, SLAE made significant strides in advancing both its academic and societal impact. The inaugural Black Decolonial
Psychology Conference positioned Hampton at the forefront of mental health advocacy, challenging systemic inequities in Black communities and amplifying the school’s commitment to social justice.
Music Majors Take on France Summer Program
Dr. Tiffany Jackson, alongside five music majors, took Hampton’s talent to the France Summer Music YXIE program. Through performances and master classes, these students showcased their talents and expanded their global perspectives.

Celebrating More Than Three Decades of Excellence in Nursing
For over 38 years, Dr. Arlene Montgomery has served at Hampton University’s School of Nursing, where she developed both professionally and personally.
Beginning her career as a clinical laboratory assistant, Dr. Montgomery advanced to key leadership roles, including faculty, department chair, Assistant Dean, and Dean (with three appointments). She has guided nurse researchers, serving on 64 dissertation and thesis committees. Her career has been marked by prestigious recognitions, such as the E. L. Hamm Sr. Distinguished Teaching Award, Endowed Professor of Nursing, and Tenured Professor.
During her tenure, Dr. Montgomery successfully secured over $8 million in grants for scholarships and student support, significantly easing financial burdens for students. Upon her retirement, she was awarded Professor Emeritus status by the Board of Trustees, a distinction that stands alongside her
retirement as Colonel in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, both reflecting her enduring commitment to service.
Hampton University has been an extraordinary place for Dr. Montgomery to build a career and influence future generations. Her absence will be deeply felt, and she will be greatly missed.

Through its partnership with the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.), the school expands opportunities for ordination and certification, preparing graduates not only for the pulpit but also for roles where ethical leadership and spiritual grounding are essential to addressing today’s most pressing issues.

Thriving in Ministry, Thriving Congregations, and Compelling Preaching
The Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, now in its 110th year of existence, established in 1914 with four denominations and 40 pastors, continues to make committed investments in the lives, ministries, theological education and professional development of African American clergy.
The conference, in partnership with the School of Religion, is working with churches, pastors, congregations, and other faith-based organizations to help families share their faith through the Lilly Foundation’s Parents and Caregivers Initiative, Roots and Wings for Living and Loving
This capacity-building grant will allow our religious works, Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, School of Religion, and Church Development and Leadership Academy along with the Office of Religious Life to integrate and comprehensively share the results of the research, study, and work targeting the ongoing professional development and theological education of pastoral practitioners and scholars.

With a $1.76 million grant from the Simons Foundation, Hampton’s Stellarator Experiment Group is pioneering fusion plasma technology in collaboration with Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. Their work on a stellarator device has the potential to create a nearly limitless, carbon-free energy source, marking a significant step toward solving global energy challenges.
Advancing Public Health and Student Achievement
Hampton’s commitment to excellence extends to public health, where students like Shane Taylor are making an impact. Taylor’s research in immunology, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, focused on vaccine development, highlighting the School’s dedication to producing scientists equipped to solve real-world problems.
His success mirrors the achievements of students across disciplines who contribute to solving critical global health challenges.
Alumni-Led Leadership and Advocacy
Four Hampton University Marine and Environmental Science alumni hold leadership roles in Black in Marine Science, a non-profit amplifying Black voices in marine science and encouraging diversity in the field. Founded by Dr. Tiara Moore, the organization began as an online event inspired by #BlackBirdersWeek, aiming to create community and highlight racial and ocean justice. The initiative continues to provide a vital space for Black marine scientists to connect, inspire, and support each other.

Illuminating the Future of Space Technology: Hampton University’s STAR_LITE Project
The STAR_LITE (Space Technology and Research for the Advancement of Lightweight Systems) project advanced aerospace innovation by developing lightweight materials to enhance spacecraft efficiency. A $1.76 million Simon Foundation grant supported the construction of an interstellarator to study these materials in extreme environments. This research has applications beyond space, benefiting industries like automotive and renewable energy.

Hampton University’s 27th Annual School of Science Research Symposium, themed “S.T.E.M: The Answer to Life’s Questions,” took place on April 11–12, 2024. The event provided students with a platform to present research, gain professional feedback, and connect with leading scientists, fostering critical skills and mentorship opportunities that inspire future STEM leaders. By participating in the symposium, students can present their own research, receive feedback from experienced professionals, and engage in meaningful discussions with peers and experts.
The symposium is integral to student learning as it encourages critical

Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) uses the cutting-edge Proteus 235 system from IBA, a world leader in proton therapy technology. This powerful machine, seen here in our treatment room, allows for highly precise cancer treatments that target tumors with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Since our partnership with IBA began in 2010, their innovative proton therapy solutions, including advanced cyclotron and gantry systems, have helped us deliver state-of-the-art care, providing patients with the best possible outcomes.

Hampton Proton provides equitable access to proton therapy, actively promoting awareness of its benefits to ensure that diverse communities understand their options and the importance of early detection.
Hampton Proton is also a leader in groundbreaking research, collaborating with top scientists to develop innovative treatment protocols that enhance the effectiveness of proton therapy.
As the first proton therapy center in Virginia and one of the largest in the United States, Hampton Proton distinguishes itself through pioneering technology that offers precise treatment with minimal harm to surrounding healthy tissue. Its patient-centered approach tailors care plans to meet individual needs, ensuring comprehensive support throughout the treatment journey.
The Institute has successfully treated thousands of patients, achieving high success rates and significantly reducing side effects compared to traditional radiation therapies. Through its commitment to research, education, and compassionate care, Hampton Proton continues to set new standards in cancer treatment and make a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.

Increasing Operational Efficiency
Considerable progress is being made in transforming the campus into a leader in sustainability and innovation. One of the most significant achievements has been the completion of a three-year overhaul of the heating system, replacing the outdated steam infrastructure with a modern district water system. This shift has reduced the university’s carbon footprint by 60%, significantly increasing operational efficiency and positioning Hampton as a leader in campus sustainability. These energy savings enable us to invest further in academic programs and campus improvements, enhancing the overall experience for students and staff.
Upgrading Accommodations and Bolstering Broadband
Hampton has also significantly upgraded 14 key facilities, including Armstrong Hall, the Student Center, and Moton Hall, which now features state-of-the-art living spaces for students. The installation of a 100G broadband network places Hampton at the forefront of technological advancement, boosting both research and digital learning capabilities. These enhancements strengthen Hampton’s position as a premier institution for attracting top talent, fostering an environment that supports the success of both students and faculty.

HAMPTON UNIVERSITY CONTINUES TO ELEVATE ITS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNITY IMPACT THROUGH TRANSFORMATIVE SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS AWARDED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. Pepsi x Mary J. Blige “Strength of a Woman” Scholarship: Sophomore Brooklyn Miller received the inaugural $30,000 renewable scholarship, celebrating academic excellence and supporting Black women in education.
Truist Grant for Workforce
Empowerment: With a $250,000 grant, Hampton is addressing educational and employment gaps for underserved communities, fostering long-term economic mobility through career development programs.
Hampton’s Army ROTC Department awarded scholarships to nine cadets, supporting their academic and leadership development as future military leaders.
For the second year, Apple contributed $350,000 through the Community Education Initiative to empower students with cutting-edge technology and advance educational equity.
Amazon awarded 52 scholarships totaling $100,000 to School of Business students as part of a partnership designed to equip students with essential digital skills for success in today’s tech-driven world.

Honoring Coach David Six’s Legacy
Hampton’s commitment to excellence is further reflected in the recent induction of David Six, Hampton’s all-time winningest women’s basketball coach, into the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame.

Hampton University’s 110th Ministers’ Conference, the world’s largest and longest-running gathering of African American clergy, stood as a significant and prestigious occasion with theme “Tools for Transforming the Life of the Leader.” With thousands in attendance, the event featured respected religious leaders such as Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, who delivered the keynote address, along with Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley, Rev. Marrisa Farrow, Rev. Dr. Cynthia James, and Rev. Dr. Raquel Lettsome. This year also introduced a historic partnership between Hampton’s School of Religion and the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.)
