Report to Donors MISSION To ignite the academic and creative potential of students with dyslexia and other languagebased learning differences. VISION The world class educational program at HRS is a catalyst for students to discover the joy of learning within a rich, comprehensive school experience. CORE VALUES Respect, Responsibility, Purpose, Perseverance EQUITY STATEMENT The Hamlin Robinson School community strives to ensure each student and their family has access to the supports they need within an inclusive environment that recognizes and honors all aspects of identity. We aspire to create an equitable environment for each student, family, faculty and staff, and all members within our community where everyone thrives and knows they belong. We are committed to this journey which requires continual self-reflection, vulnerability, intentionality, and accountability from each of us. The Scoop is a publication of the HRS Advancement Office and is mailed quarterly.
In the two decades that I’ve been a part of Hamlin Robinson School, I’ve had numerous opportunities to witness the strength of our community. One of those times came when, after only three years in our then-brandnew school (now the Lower School), we decided to purchase adjacent property and build a Middle School. After a successful capital campaign and front-row seats to construction, we moved into the new HRS Middle School one year ago during an extended Thanksgiving break. That is strength! As a community, we’ve also weathered the Covid storm and its lingering effects. It has been satisfying to witness the evolution back to inperson meetings and events. Initial and tentative forays back into groups and crowds have given way to standard community gatherings again. What a welcome relief!
better when we can be together. A common theme that I’ve heard from multiple parents is that “we want more opportunities to gather, more connections with each other.” I am grateful that you, as a community, want to grow stronger. We have a volunteer Family Association that facilitates ways to connect. We have alumni students who gather together each year to catch up on each other’s lives. We have alumni parents who continue to support Hamlin Robinson School through service on panels, attending the auction, and supporting us financially long past their days at the school. Hamlin Robinson School is missiondriven to maximize its effect in serving our internal and external community. We are also community-driven to provide opportunities for you to build connections with our school and with each other. We are still exploring all the ways to fully utilize our vibrant and beautiful campus. I look forward to working with each of you to create an ever-stronger community.
The common purpose of the HRS community unites us. We want the best for our children, our students. We want to ignite their academic and creative potential. Families want to connect with others who share similar, though unique, journeys.
Sincerely,
It seems that what many of us learned from social distancing is that we do

Neighborhood Updates Hamlin Robinson School is proud to be located in a vibrant and caring neighborhood. Together, we look out for each other and foster a safe and welcoming community. To strengthen these ties, HRS has created a tradition of sending quarterly communications to our neighbors so that they know our school’s mission and also alerting them to scheduled school events. This outreach is essential in maintaining positive relationships and highlighting the partnerships we strive to build. HRS also delivers a Neighborhood Appreciation gift each year to those neighbors closest to us. Most recently, and in collaboration with our annual fund theme Share the Story, neighbors received a bookmark on their doorsteps, along with a note inviting them to stay connected with us. We look forward to another great year in our neighborhood!

All-Star Enrichment
At HRS
Smiling and watching a chorus of HRS students give her the ASL sign for “me too,” all-star Seattle Storm Guard, Jewell Loyd, told students about her own experience with dyslexia and ADHD – having been formally diagnosed in 8th grade. Her visit to Hamlin Robinson School was made possible by the Joan Beauregard Endowment for Discovery and Enrichment, which provides opportunities to supplement classes at Hamlin Robinson School with special guests, speakers, and performances. This year, students have already learned from enrichment opportunities featuring author Polly Holyoke, retired King County Superior Court Judge Michael Fox, and most recently, Jewell Loyd.
As a young student, Jewell often found herself frustrated, struggling to understand why she had trouble with reading and writing assignments. The material wasn’t the problem; she could easily comprehend what she was learning. But the pressure to complete assignments weighed her down, leaving her feeling like teachers thought she
4 | The HRS Scoop
was just a stereotypical athlete, with no drive for schoolwork. The truth was, she had dyslexia and hadn’t yet learned how to work with it. Thankfully, Loyd’s mom was a dedicated, observant teacher herself, which equipped her to find and support her daughter’s learning differences. The diagnosis not only gave Jewell the confidence to understand she can be successful with the right tools, but it also empowered her to advocate for herself. To help her study, she often played music while she
worked, which helped her remember the content. On the basketball court, Loyd views her dyslexia as an asset. It has taught her to use her mind in a different way than others, looking for unconventional solutions. She credits her own unique style in basketball to this approach – giving her an edge and allowing her to be the standout player she is. HRS students had the chance to see
Loyd’s skills in person as she led a game of Knockout with 15 students each from the lower school and the middle school. Basketballs soared through the air, with HRS students making basket after basket to the cheers of their peers in a true show of sportsmanship. As the game raced on, Level 8 student Davin C. kept Loyd running as he made shot after shot. True to form, the winning series of shots from Loyd started with a trick shot from behind the backboard that easily swooshed into the net. Once the cheers abated, Loyd answered dozens of questions from HRS students, including many about her learning differences, when she started to play basketball (as early as she can remember), what other sport she might have chosen (tennis), what she’d be doing if she wasn’t visiting HRS (walking her mini-goldendoodles), what she eats after a game (pasta), and who her favorite basketball player is (Kobe Bryant). While there were many questions about achievements, Loyd also shared her perspective on the games that didn’t go her way. While she notes that she has probably won
more games than she has lost, she has “learned more from the losses. I’ve learned how to be a better teammate, a better listener, and to have more confidence in myself.” Jewell Loyd’s visit was filled with fun and a sense of how genuine and humble she is – truly interested in connecting with students on a personal level. As someone who knows what it’s like to have a learning difference, Loyd spoke directly to HRS students about their worth. Sharing words her mother once told her, that “this is a part of you, but it doesn’t mean it’ll hold you back,” Loyd encouraged students to find their own strengths. With both lower school students and middle school students, she emphasized their value: “Each and every one of you, there’s only one of you. Understand that, own that, love that.” The Lower School Commons wall has long featured Jewell Loyd as part of a display of prominent figures with dyslexia. Now, when students see it, they’ll have a personal story and experience to connect with it – one they are sure to remember for years to come.

The Makerspace Transforms Learning Have you ever wondered what sparks the joy of creation and exploration for HRS Middle School students? Look no further than our very own Makerspace, where the art of making, learning, and sharing comes to life. The inaugural Makerspace classes began this fall trimester, with students turning everyday challenges into exciting solutions. They kicked off the term by crafting innovative garbage and recycling bins for the space. One of the class highlights was a 3D marble run challenge – where teams were tasked with creating a free-standing, meter-high structure that allowed a marble to descend for a minimum of 10 seconds. The challenge wasn’t just about reaching the finish line; it was about planning, trial and error, and understanding the nuances and effects of different materials.
The HRS Makerspace isn’t just a room with tools and supplies; it’s a dynamic environment where the maker mindset thrives, and ideas become reality.
Later in the term, an “Open Workshop” allowed students to choose independent projects. Basic woodworking tools like coping saws, rasps, and drills were introduced, leading to an array of creative projects. From scooters and badminton sets to basketball hoops and tabletop games, HRS students transformed their ideas into tangible products. Mr. Kuh assisting students as they create independent projects.
6 | The HRS Scoop
Specialized tools, along with materials as simple as cardboard, Legos, and basic art supplies, allow for the continuous acquisition of innovative skills. Whether they are solving real-life problems or freely exploring personal projects, students are at the heart of this creative class process. The Makerspace journey has only begun. A recent grant will provide even more tools, kits, and supplies as classes take shape. The support of our community allowed us to envision and build this space. We can truly say that our students are being equipped to learn without limits!
What Students say
We have a lot of freedom. We get to build all kinds of things. I made a skateboard.
We do a lot of fun projects! We did a marble maze and I got to make my own drum set.
I’ve learned woodworking skills and how to plan out my projects.
To support the transformational work at our school, please join us for this year's Auction!
