MISSION To ignite the academic and creative potential of students with dyslexia and other languagebased learning differences. VISION The world class educational program at HRS is a catalyst for students to discover the joy of learning within a rich, comprehensive school experience. CORE VALUES Respect, Responsibility, Purpose, Perseverance The Scoop is a publication of the HRS Advancement Office and is mailed quarterly.

It's nearly impossible to sum up in words everything we've been through this last year. Even as the global pandemic continues with renewed vigor, I can’t help but believe we still have much to celebrate as a community. We opened the 2019 school year with the same innocence and purpose as every year prior, not realizing what lay ahead. We ended the year with grace, creativity, and a renewed confidence. Hamlin Robinson School still has so much to accomplish and offer. We cannot stop our work – in fact, our current environment proves the program offered at HRS is more important than ever. Literacy is a social justice issue – every child, every student, every person, deserves the opportunity to learn how to read and write, no matter the circumstances. Yes, it would be naïve not to acknowledge there remains incredible uncertainty. But, what remains the same? A deeply talented and fiercely dedicated faculty and staff who

encourage, support and mentor our students. A loyal and generous Hamlin Robinson community whose efforts make it all possible. Together, we are singularly focused on one goal: to ignite the academic and creative potential of students with dyslexia and other languagebased learning differences. What’s The Scoop? This newsletter includes our annual report – and provides opportunity to reflect on our goals and accomplishments, with laser vision on the future ahead. As an organization, we are exploring our creative side and refreshing our brand. You will see it in the pages of this newsletter, from cover to end, including the new name. This refresh includes recognized visual elements – but with an updated look and feel. It will reflect a more current, renewed image and keep pace with our competition as we continue to grow. It is in the spirit of gratitude we offer this publication, celebrating the gifts, achievements, and generosity of the HRS community. We will continue to innovate, evolve, and reinvent in service to our students. Sincerely, Stacy Turner

What’s The Scoop?

The School Scoop By Jami Sheets, Communications Director

Staying connected in the time of COVID poses challenges, but with

creativity and a dedication to our mission, we’re finding new ways to work, play, and learn together. SPREADING KINDNESS WITH PAINTED ROCKS Looking for a no-contact activity to keep our primary students connected outside of the classroom, Parent Association reps came up with an idea that – well, rocks! In Ms. Krueger’s Level 3 class, students were paired together and spent a week performing acts of kindness for their partners, such as exchanging compliments and praise. During a weekend social, primary students gathered on Zoom to paint rocks together. Students paid special attention to the interests of their partners, painting butterflies or Pokémon characters, knowing they would particularly enjoy these images. When gathered together during an in-person school day, students exchanged these unique and carefully created rocks with their partners. Kudos to our primary level teachers, Parent Association reps, and Mr.

Howden, HRS Counselor, for their work fostering kindness and community! SPEAKER SERIES GOES VIRTUAL The Hamlin Robinson School Speaker Series has long had a reputation for connecting dyslexia education and child development experts with the community. Now, the Speaker Series brings experts from around the country right into your living room! This year, the HRS Speaker Series will engage six exceptional speakers on the topics of robotics, equity and inclusion, genetics, executive functioning, and more. With the launch of virtual events via Zoom webinar, these professionals have already drawn an increased audience and growing excitement within our community.

The Scoop is a fresh, new name for the Hamlin Robinson quarterly newsletter. The Scoop is a hard-copy publication sent to friends of Hamlin Robinson School, with the purpose of inviting the broader community to learn more about current programs, showcase and celebrate our school, honor and recognize our students and faculty, and feature special events and activities. Why the new name? HRS has experienced steady growth over the last decade, and with this growth, there are more stories to tell, more updates to share, and a wider audience interested in staying connected. It is through this publication HRS can engage with our beloved families, alumni and friends. It’s our way of offering inspiration for our community to fall in love with HRS all over again. So, we hope you enjoy getting the scoop! Know someone who would like to receive The Scoop? Email info@hamlinrobinson.org so we can update our records! ●

As our school becomes a regional resource hub for dyslexia and other language-based learning differences, this series promises »

» to draw attendees not just from our own community, but can serve a regional and even national audience. Visit our website to see the list of featured speakers for the 2020-21 series or contact Jen Fukataki, Director of Community Services + HRS Learning Center, with questions. www.hamlinrobinson.org/speakerseries jfukutaki@hamlinrobinson.org INNOVATION IN PRACTICE In response to our continued growth and recognizing the ever increasing need to remain connected in an era of technology innovation, HRS launched state-of-the-art parent and student information portals through our new student information system, Veracross. The portals connect parents and students to the school in new and efficient ways. Through these portals, each group has access to tailored information displayed according to their role at the school. Students see class schedules and websites, school calendars, assignments, grades, and more. Parents see student academic information, plus school announcements, messages, and household directory information. Faculty can easily manage class logistics, such as attendance, gradebooks, and lesson planning. We are excited to explore more ways to take advantage of the depth and breadth of resources offered through these portals – and to ensure our families have access to immediate and tailored information, delivering on our educational mission. ●

The Heroes of HRS Social Media By Kavita Athalye, Development Associate

In a year when so much has changed, we’ve been presented with challenges we’ve never encountered before; at the same time, it’s an opportunity to rise to the occasion and think outside-the-box when messaging our mission. The HRS social media team is reimagining ways to share the Hamlin Robinson School experience with the greater community.

lining; they possess and embrace an unwavering enthusiasm and excitement even when surroundings have not returned to ‘normal’.

Our students – for showing up to class every day (in-person and online) with energy and dedication to learning.

Everyone and everything is now online. Our goal; share and celebrate the stories of our school and our students in a way that creates impact amidst all the noise. How are we doing it? Focusing on what we do best – teaching, mentoring and motivating. One example: #MotivationalMondays published at the start of each week on Facebook and Instagram, dedicated to sharing teachers’ reflections on topics such as courage and perseverance.

With the end of the year approaching, we will wholeheartedly celebrate and honor this season of gratitude on social media, highlighting our kind, caring, dedicated, and supportive community.

When this pandemic is over, we can’t wait to capture, share, and celebrate our amazing community in-person. In the meantime, we will continue to share our news and stories the way we know best; by highlighting the everyday heroes at Hamlin Robinson School.

What do I enjoy most about being a member of the social media team? Capturing photos and videos of our students engaged in learning both onscreen and in-person. When students slowly and safely returned back to the building, our youngest community members entered the doors with a pep in their step, dutifully sanitizing their hands, and smiling and chattering away as they went to class. Seeing students excited and eager to learn reminds me of the silver

At HRS, there are so many heroes to acknowledge: Our teachers – for adapting our structured literacy program into an online convention while continuously researching best practices and resources to engage and support our students. Our staff – for ensuring learning and working spaces are safe for everyone while also embracing new, creative, and innovative ways to build community and provide resources to students and families.

Turning on post notifications is a great way to ensure you always see HRS updates on social media. On our Facebook page, click the three dots to the right of 'like' and 'message' and choose 'follow settings' to customize your news from HRS. On Instagram, just choose any of our posts and click the three dots in the right-hand corner, choose 'turn on post notifications'. We hope you'll follow along as we continue to share all things HRS. ●

Our parents – for their unwavering support, trust, and belief in our mission and our program.

Catching Up With Alum Luke Olson By Lynne Jones, High School Transition and Alumni Coordinator

It should come as no surprise that Luke Olson, HRS class of 2009, made sports the focus of his professional life.

Luke played on the golf team at Kennedy Catholic High School until he graduated in 2013 and then went on to play competitively at Green River College and Pacific University. Luke studied journalism and graduated from college in 2018. “Sports have always been a big part of my life, and I knew I wanted to work in sports. When I got to college, I was able to figure out that covering sports and writing about it was what I wanted to pursue.” And he did just that. As sports editor for the Ellensburg Daily Record in Ellensburg, Washington, Luke has the opportunity to combine his journalism degree with his passion for sports. We caught up with Luke and asked him to share more about his journey from HRS to the Ellensburg Daily Record’s sports page.

Is there a particular teacher at HRS who impacted you? The two teachers who impacted me the most were Ms. Monroe and Mr. Meints. Although I was only at HRS for two years (7th and 8th grade), I always enjoyed being around them!

When you think of HRS, what comes to mind?

When I think of HRS, I think of the positive environment. It was tough for me going from a public school to a small private school but the faculty and students made the transition seamless.

What have transitions been like for you and how did your time at HRS prepare you (HRS to high school, high school to college)?

HRS helped me navigate my learning struggles, which helped my transition into high school. It provided me self-esteem and confidence going into the next level of education. The Saint Teresa Program at Kennedy Catholic High School also played a big part in helping me overcome my learning challenges. The combination of HRS and the Saint Teresa Program made college a breeze.

What is one piece of advice you would share with others about dyslexia?

One piece of advice I would give is for students to know that having a learning disability doesn’t prevent you from doing what you want to do in life. There are ample success stories of others who have learning challenges. While learning can be a labyrinth and takes a little more effort, don’t let it get you down or stand in your way.

Tell me about your path after HRS:

After I graduated from high school in 2013, I enrolled at Green River College in Auburn, WA, where I earned my Associate of Arts (AA) while competing on the golf team. In 2016, I found a small private school in Forest Grove, OR (Pacific University), where I could study journalism and play two more years of collegiate golf. I graduated in May of 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts - Journalism.

What motivates you in daily life?

Lots of things motivate me - my fiancé, Willow, both our families and our two great dogs (a St. Bernese and English Bulldog)! I look forward

HA MLI N ROBI NS ON SC H O O L | www.hamlinrobinson.org

to the future with excitement and knowing I can learn and improve in my career and craft, and all the possibilities that come with this.

What is one thing you do just because you love it?

I love golf! I played in high school and then had the opportunity to play in college. It’s such a frustrating game but always draws me back. I know I can learn a lot from the game. You have to be willing to put plenty of time into practice – and always remember with golf, patience is a virtue.

Highlight some of your most valued achievements:

Placing in the top ten in a couple of collegiate tournaments at Pacific University makes me proud – including a second-place finish my junior season. I’m a sportswriter now and I’ve had a couple of runner up placements in the state for feature story awards, which are a nice accomplishment. I’ll continue to hone my writing and reporting skills, and maybe I’ll garner a firstplace award next year! ● HRS Alumni - tell us what you're up to! Contact Lynne Jones: ljones@hamlinrobinson.org

What I appreciate about Hamlin Robinson so much is they know how to tap into the interests and curiosity of each student, despite their learning difference. They recognize all students have potential and the ability to learn. They are giving these children the confidence and ability to go out into the world and say this is what I need and this is what I have to offer. There is nothing better than a child who feels smart, proud, and empowered. HRS PARENT

Dear Friends, Thank you – these are two small words which carry deep meaning and immense impact. These simple words can often seem inadequate to describe gratitude, especially for the immense and unselfish generosity of the Hamlin Robinson community. Our community is the driving force behind our achievements. In a year filled with uncertainty, our supporters have conviction. Faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, trustees, alumni, and friends have all made gifts to Hamlin Robinson School this past year through in-kind contributions, volunteer hours, and monetary support. The 2019-20 Annual Report includes financial contributions made to the school from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020. Each and every gift affirms our mission.

HA MLI N ROBI NS ON SC H O O L | www.hamlinrobinson.org

We are fortunate to have resolute, steadfast supporters and benefactors dedicated to furthering our world-class educational program. The opportunity to attend HRS is transformational; students build self-esteem, they become selfassured, families find support, and most importantly, learning finally becomes fun. As a trustee, I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished – and what lies ahead. Thank you for entrusting us with this work – and for furthering our ability to achieve even more. With warm Thanksgiving wishes,
