SPELLING BEE RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. There will be four categories in the Spelling Bee: • • • •

HONEY BEES: A1 Students BUMBLE BEES: A2 Students CARPENTER BEES: B1 Students WASPS: B2 & Bilingual students (Students who are native English speakers or have lived at least two years in an Anglo-Saxon country, also those who have reached such level due to their studies )

There should be one contestant per category.

2. There are two modalities: a. The judge says the word and the contestant has to spell it. b. The judge will show the second word and the participant must turn around, read it and pronounce it.

3. The contestant has 10 seconds either to say the word or spell it out. 4. The contestant should say the word before and after spelling it out. The contestant will not be disqualified if he/she omits this rule.

5. The judge can repeat the word to be spelled only one more time. 6. The contestants can restart spelling by asking the judges for authorization, when they realize to have mistaken the spelling.

7. The judges are the only ones to say if spelling is right or wrong. They will grade it as 0 or 5 respectively.

8. The judges will grade pronunciation from 0 to 3 according to sounds, word stress, and articulation.

9. If a word or letters are said aloud by the audience, a new word will be given to the speller.

10.

If a word has other spelling (Br/Am) or a homophone, remember the one in the list is the one that counts. Study these words as they are in the list.
