A Message from Our Director Edra Waterman

The Fall quarter brings much to look forward to here at HEPL! Our annual community read program Books Build Bridges is back, featuring a keynote presentation, panel discussion, and book signings from well-known authors Sonali Dev, Christina Soontornvat, and Natasha Bowen. Be sure to join us for our Taste of History series and connect your senses with local food history during the Hamilton County Bicentennial Celebration. Our Fall Maker-in-Residence in Ignite Studio is artist, poet, animator, author, designer, professor, and storyteller, Rue Sparks. Visit Ignite Studio September-December 2023 to meet Rue and get creative with your story! Every September is Library Card Signup Month, and we’re excited to partner with Conner Prairie this year on a limited-edition vinyl sticker to jazz up your library card when you sign up for or renew your card at the Fishers or Noblesville Library. There are so many opportunities to engage with the library this fall, and we hope to share many experiences with you!

Books Build Bridges

Books Build Bridges is a community read program hosted each fall to build community through shared experience, provide diverse reading opportunities, and engage the HEPL community with noted authors. This year’s featured books are classic stories reimagined. We will welcome Sonali Dev, Christina Soontornvat, and Natasha Bowen for a keynote presentation, panel discussion, and book signings on September 30. A Taste of History: Bicentennial Celebration

Join us for A Taste of History, a series of programs around food history in Hamilton County, to create a multi-sensory experience that engages your sense of taste, smell, and touch as you connect with local history during the Hamilton County Bicentennial Celebration. Upcoming programs include Finding Your Farmer Ancestors, Fishing in Fall Creek, and Blind Tiger Bootleggers. Find out more and register to attend on page 15!

Meet Your New Maker-in-Residence

Ignite Studio welcomes our next Maker-in-Residence, Rue Sparks! Visit during September-December 2023 to meet them! Artist, poet, animator, author, designer, professor—Rue Sparks has worn a lot of labels, but the one thing they’ve always aspired to be is simply a storyteller. They create poetry, stories, novels, zines, and artwork that tread where trauma and healing align, and advocate for creators to have the tools to create and distribute their own work. Library Card Sign-Up Month: 12 Ways To Use Your Library Card

Discover the power of a library card! Sign up for or renew your library card at the Fishers or Noblesville Library in September to receive a limited-edition vinyl sticker for your library card! We’re partnering with Conner Prairie for a special promotion, and we’ll be showcasing all the fun ways to use your library card that you may have never heard of before! Connecting Communities through Reading

Books Build Bridges is a community read program hosted by Hamilton East Public Library each fall to build community through shared experience, provide diverse reading opportunities, and engage the HEPL community with noted authors. This year’s featured books are classic stories reimagined. For adult readers, the featured book is Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev. For teen readers, the featured book is Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen. For children, the featured book is A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Sonali Dev is a USA Today bestselling author who writes Bollywood-style love stories that explore universal issues. Her novels have been named Best Books of the Year by Library Journal, NPR, and the Washington Post. She has won numerous accolades, including the American Library Association’s award for best romance and the RT Reviewer Choice Award for best contemporary romance. She lives in Chicagoland with her husband, two visiting adult children, and the world’s most perfect dog.

Natasha Bowen is a New York Times bestselling author, teacher, and mother of three children. She is of Nigerian and Welsh descent and lives in Cambridge, England, where she grew up. Natasha studied English and creative writing at Bath Spa University before moving to East London, where she taught for nearly ten years. She is obsessed with Japanese and German stationery. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, watched over carefully by Milk and Honey, her cat and dog.

MEET THE AUTHORS

Christina Soontornvat is an award-winning author, engineer, and STEM educator. Her many works for children include picture books, chapter books, and the bestselling graphic novel, The Tryout. She is a three-time Newbery Honor recipient, most recently for The Last Mapmaker, which was also named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times. She is very proud of both her Thai and her Texan roots. She currently lives in Austin, Texas with her husband and two daughters.

Adult Writing Challenge: Classics Reimagined

August 1-31

The theme for this challenge is Classics Reimagined. This can be a fairy tale, myth, or classic literature from any culture, recreated in your own vision. The twist could be any change to the story’s characters, setting, plot, conflict, ending, point of view, or even a mixture of tales. Adult writers should submit an original, reimagined classic tale as a short story by August 31. Winners will receive gift cards and a meet-and-greet with the visiting authors for HEPL’s Books Build Bridges event on Sept. 30.

Teen Writing Challenge: Reimagined Classics

August 1-31

The theme for HEPL’s next Teen Writing Challenge is reimagined classics! Take any classic literature, fairy tale, or mythology and write your own story inspired by it! Teen writers can submit an original short story by August 31st. Winners will receive gift cards and a meet-and-greet with the visiting authors at HEPL’s Books Build Bridges event on September 30th.

Note: The authors will not be present at the above book discussions.

HEPL patrons will be able to pick up a free copy of the featured novels (while supplies last) at the Noblesville or Fishers libraries beginning August 21, 2023. Or, the novels may be borrowed from the HEPL bookshelves or digitally through the library’s Libby/OverDrive collection.

Raccoon Lake Sax Quartet - History of the Saxophone*

The Raccoon Lake Sax Quartet consists of professional musicians who are dedicated to preserving the art of live music. The group provides a wide variety of programs, and today, they’ll be presenting a history of the saxophone though music. They engage audiences with historical background, musical trivia, and singalongs. The HEPL Music Series is sponsored by the Friends of Hamilton East Public Library. As always, children and families are welcome. Registration is recommended.

James Madison Constitution Day Program*

Carmel-based Winged Victory Foundation (WFV), whose mission is to “advance liberty through storytelling and the performing arts,” is partnering with HEPL to host a James Madison Constitution Day program. The program will include an appearance of the Father of the Constitution, James Madison, with U.S. Constitution expert John Holmes as moderator and facilitator in the Center Room. The performance will be followed by The Remnant Trust Exhibit in the East Room, featuring an original 1700-era U.S. Constitution, a 1500-era Magna Carta, as well as original James Madison correspondence and letters. Join us as we celebrate America, our liberty, and meet The Father of the U.S. Constitution, James Madison!

Community Board Game Day with Who’s Yer Gamers*

Life Skills: Electricity is Like Lion Taming*

Local handywoman, Handy Mandy, teaches you all about home electricity and that sometimes, a little fear is a good thing! She’ll discuss simple electrical work that you can do yourself, plus some tips on how to talk to professionals so you’re not taken advantage of. Handy Mandy’s presentation will include some time for questions, so come prepared for discussion!

Bollywood Dance and Culture*

It’s National Dance Day so come dance with us! You’ll be introduced to the basic steps used in Indian Bollywood dancing with teaching artist Usha Sirimalle. Indian culture, language, and history is all intertwined in this movement workshop. Learning choreography, together in a low-pressure environment, you will dance to traditional Bollywood music. Students will learn poses, grace, hand and foot movements, and expression--all integral parts of Bollywood dance.

Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL)*

Teens and adults are invited to this three-part series featuring deaf educator, Michelle Cleary. Learn some basic signs to expand your communication skills with people with hearing loss. All class materials will be provided. This series will expose students to the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). It is important to attend all three sessions in order to receive the full benefit of this opportunity; please check your calendar before committing to the series. Your registration for the first class (September 19) will register you for the entire series.

Neurodivergent Teen Hangout*

This program is an opportunity for neurodivergent teens to hang out, do an activity, and connect with their peers. Each month will feature a different theme and activity. Lower lighting and KultureCity Kits (which include fidgets and noise reducing headphones) will be provided. Parents are not required to stay in the room but should stay in the library to be available if needed. This program is designed as a social club, not a form of childcare. Want a safe space to write creatively and grow as a writer? To try new writing techniques and share your ideas with other teen writers? Then join Scribe Circle! Each month, teens will discuss a different element of creative writing, then write about the topic and share their writing with each other. (Sharing is not mandatory though!) Teens can write something new each meeting or add to a story they are currently writing. All writing experience levels are welcome! August: How to make your story’s pacing work for you | September: Writing vivid descriptions for scenes and characters | October: Poetry with special guest Dan J. Adult Writing Challenge

Adult Writing Challenge: Classics Reimagined

Hamilton East Public Library is pleased to announce this year’s Adult Writing Challenge! The theme for this challenge is Classics Reimagined. This can be a fairy tale, myth, or classic literature from any culture, recreated in your own vision. The twist could be any change to the story’s characters, setting, plot, conflict, ending, point of view, or even a mixture of tales. Adult writers should submit an original, reimagined classic tale as a short story by 8:00pm on August 31.

Library staff members will judge the reimagined classics. Judges will be looking to see if the story reflects the Classics Reimagined theme, is 4,000 words or less, is organized, and provides overall entertainment.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive gift cards of $75, $50, and $25, respectively (winners can choose gift cards from a list of available retailers), a meet-and-greet with the visiting authors at HEPL’s Books Build Bridges event on Sept. 30, and will have their work shared on HEPL’s blog! FlexAbility is a fitness program which offers participants an opportunity to become more fit using stretching, relaxing, and restorative movements and poses, taught by a certified instructor. While there may be some similarities to yoga poses, this is not a yoga class. For your comfort and enjoyment of the class, please bring a mat and small towel. Overdose Awareness: Narcan Education*

Narcan, also called Naloxone, is a lifesaving medication used to reverse an overdose of opioids. In this Narcan Education class, patrons will be provided with an overview of how overdoses affect our city, ways to identify an overdose, and how to help someone experiencing an overdose.

What’s Beneath Geist Reservoir? The History of Germantown*

Flooded in 1943, Geist Reservoir was the result of decades of planning. Along with Morse Reservoir, these man-made lakes were seen as a solution to Indianapolis’s water needs. Join local historian Robert Bowling and area descendant and genealogist Susan Lucas to learn how the community of Germantown and surrounding farms were bought out by the Indianapolis Water Company to make this happen. What was life like for those who lived where Geist now sits? If you’re a descendant of a family from this area, bring your memories and records!

A Taste of History: Blind Tiger Bootleggers*

At the turn of the 20th century, prohibition was gaining traction across the United States. Join us as we explore teetotalers and bootleggers from Hamilton County and the political forces in Indiana promoting temperance. Take a tipple from Four Day Ray as you discover how local bootleggers operated outside of the system with their “blind tiger” establishments. Must be 18 or older to attend and 21 or older to imbibe.

Fall 2023 Maker-in-Residence: Rue Sparks

Artist, poet, animator, author, designer, professor—Rue Sparks has worn a lot of labels, but the one thing they’ve always aspired to be is simply a storyteller. Rue received a BFA in Illustration and Digital Media from Kendall College of Art & Design, then spent over a decade working in fast-paced digital advertising agencies creating designs for Fortune 500 companies. Today, their work is more personal, but they take no less care in its creation. They create poetry, stories, novels, zines, and artwork that tread where trauma and healing align, and advocate for creators to have the tools to create and distribute their own work. Q: A:

What mediums do you work in and why?

I tend to fall back on graphite pencil, ink, and watercolor time and again. As someone with a pain disorder, I have to be efficient and careful with my time management. I used to create much more sprawling, profoundly technical work, but my disability has forced me to consider what are the most important aspects of what I’m making. I also spent over a decade specializing in digital media, including digital painting, photo editing, motion graphics, animation, and even a little web development!

Q: A:

Where do you draw artistic inspiration from?

It’s interesting being at the conjunction of visual and written art forms, because it forces me to evaluate how things work on a narrative as well as technical level. Style-wise, there are artists and authors that I follow and admire for how they make things. One artist I have been following for almost fifteen years is LimKis. There are others that inspire based off their narratives and themes. When it comes to writers, I adore poet Nikita Gill.

What kinds of things will you be doing during your residency in Ignite?

We will be focusing on where art and the written word collide, including workshops on combining the two in different forms. I will also be helping would-be-authors figure out which path to publishing makes sense to them and exploring the ins and outs of self-publishing. Last but not least, we will be creating an anthology featuring art, poetry, and prose from all our amazing creators in the HEPL community! Stop by during Open Studios to contribute or ask questions.

What art accomplishment are you most proud of?

This is a little hard to quantify, but every time I’ve tried something new and succeeded! I remember the first short story I completed, when I barely knew what I was doing but kept trying anyway. That first taste of ‘I can do this’ is one of the things I live for as a creative person. I had this perception that there were people that were ‘good’ at certain things and not others. I learned that hard work and dedication trump ‘talent’ every time.

What else do you want the HEPL community to know about you?

Just as much as I have a need to create things myself, helping others on their creative journey speaks to the teacher in me. For me, creativity isn’t just about making things—through doing so we learn so much about ourselves. It doesn’t matter your skill level or what you make: simply making can help us heal and grow.

Use ink, watercolor, colored pencils, and other mediums to create artist trading cards to share or swap. Harkening to “ye-oldentimes” of the 1990s, Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) are original artworks the same size as traditional trading cards, originally intended to be exchanged and collected.
