HARD KNOCKS OR APRIL FALLS
Welcome to the May issue of Professional Electricians Wholesaler. The clocks have changed, the sun is shining and the evenings are lighter and so we can all enjoy being outside doing whatever it is we all love doing outdoors. For some that might be going for a bike ride or run, for others it might be sipping a glass of wine on the patio. Sport of course can also result in injuries (so can drinking too much wine but I won’t get into that now) and various team members here at PEW have experienced their own fair share in recent times, myself included.
At the Annual Luncheon for the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA) in April the guest speaker, former sprint and hurdling athlete Colin Jackson, shared stories from his career, including the frustrations that injuries can bring to professional sportspeople. Their potential successes and livelihoods can disappear in a flash with an awkward fall or slip. Our jobs at PEW are a bit more ‘desk-orientated’, however there are occasions when we do have to venture outside and lift the odd heavy box (back straight, bend your knees etc) and personal injuries can throw the odd spanner in the works.
“ I sometimes wish we could skip forward a few chapters in the advancement of home automation”
We’re a pretty small group at PEW, which I find much more preferable than working for a large organisation. Everybody knows and talks to each other and the ‘left arm’ of the team generally knows what the ‘right arm’ is doing and vice-versa. Problems only arise when one of the arms becomes incapacited for whatever reason, like, I don’t know, being pole-axed by an angry teenager in a five-a-side football match. Unlike the Pep Guardiolas of the world, we don’t have an array of substitutes to call upon when this kind of thing happens. I sometimes wish we could skip forward a few chapters in the advancement of home automation – one of our special features this month – and deploy robots to cover staff absences, but then I wonder if I’ve been watching too much Black Mirror!
In this issue we are also taking a look at Renewables & Green Technology. With the 2030 phase-out date of new petrol and diesel cars recently being confirmed by the government, this is going to be a crucial sector of the industry in the next five years and beyond.
I’m off to cover the PEW team in bubble wrap – enjoy the issue!

INDUSTRY SURVEYCONFIRMSSKILLSHORTAGESAND VOLATILE PRICINGISSUESPERSIST
The latest quarterly Building Engineering Business Survey, carried out by ECA in partnership with BESA, SELECT and SNIPEF, shows that for the twelfth quarter in a row the biggest obstacle to growth in the sector is a shortage of skilled electricians.
Over a third (37%) of respondents cite a significant shortage of qualified electricians as holding back growth in the sector. The survey shows the shortage has been a perennial issue for the last 36 months.
ECA Chief Operating Officer Andrew Eldred said: “The electrical industry is the backbone of the net-zero transition, but
the sector is struggling to train new talent at the required scale or speed. The issue is not just the recent drop in apprenticeship starts - there is also a fundamental disconnect between further education and employment.”
“Fewer than 10% of individuals completing government-funded, classroom-based electrical courses progress to apprenticeships within a year. This means thousands of enthusiastic young people keen to enter the industry are unable to do so because the system does not have the capacity to support them.”
Material costs are of increasing concern to respondents, with 23% citing
KLIPBOARDWELCOMES INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS TO KONNECT 2025
klipboard, previously known as Kerridge Commercial Systems prior to a company rebrand, recently hosted its Konnect 2025 Customer Conference, welcoming hundreds of customers and industry peers.
Once again taking place in Stratford-upon-Avon, the event gave guests an opportunity to hear about klipboard’s latest advancements relating to cloud, mobile and online technology. Following an opening address by James
Mitchell, CEO Europe, members of the klipboard leadership team discussed the need to modernise and secure business, technology futures, R&D innovations, the future of field service, customer successes and payment solutions. There was also discussion around the company’s recent rebrand, industry adoption of AI and insight into the future direction of technological advancements.
The event took place over two days –20th and 22st March – with the first day
this as a major issue. With fixed price contracts agreed many months in advance, a volatile world leaves many contractors out of pocket by the time the work is completed.
Rob Driscoll, ECA’s Director of Legal and Business, commented: “In an industry where net-zero demand is growing within wider construction stagnation, uncertainty over trade tariffs and a volatile geopolitical environment is flattening anticipated growth. The practice of fixed price contracts can leave contractors out of pocket with no recourse to recouping costs, which is particularly damaging for business interests.”
centred around a packed conference session, followed by a networking dinner in the evening. The second day was dedicated to customer product workshops with kilpboard experts on hand to field questions from delegates.

FACE TO FACE FIREANGEL
In this month’s Face to Face we catch up with Johann Keen, National Sales Manager (UK Trade) at FireAngel, to hear about the technologies to look out for and what wholesalers and customers can expect from FireAngel.
QWhat sets FireAngel apart in terms of the support it offers to wholesalers and their customers?
A. At FireAngel, we believe that delivering life-saving technology is only part of the picture - providing expert, ongoing support is just as critical. That’s why we have a dedicated team of regional sales executives who work closely with our wholesaler partners across the UK. Our approach is based on long-term partnership, not one-off transactions, meaning we’re on hand to support our customers throughout the full lifecycle of the relationship, from initial product advice through to post-sale support.
Our team is undergoing training in the latest British Standards, including BS 5839-6, ensuring we can provide informed guidance on the specification and installation of fire detection systems. This level of expertise is especially important when dealing with life-critical systems, and it allows our partners to have complete confidence in the advice they receive when specifying FireAngel solutions.
QQuality and reliability are key when it comes to fire safety products. How does FireAngel ensure its alarms meet the high standards expected by both installers and end users?
A. Reliability is at the heart of everything we do at FireAngel. Unlike some manufacturers who batch-test their alarms, we individually test every single unit across our smoke, heat and carbon monoxide ranges. This rigorous process
“ Hybrid alarm systems offer a huge amount of flexibility for installers, which is why they’re an increasingly popular choice in the market. ”
ensures that each alarm meets our exacting standards before it leaves the production line, giving both installers and end users complete peace of mind.
On top of this, we also carry out additional random testing on more than 300 alarms each month, checking sound output, critical functionality and circuit integrity. This ongoing quality control helps us maintain consistent performance and ensures that our alarms continue to operate at the highest level long after installation.
QWhat FireAngel products and solutions are currently proving popular with wholesalers/customers and why?
A. Our ST-622T smoke alarm has proven particularly popular with wholesalers and installers alike. It features advanced Thermoptek technology, our multi-sensor optical sensing system, which delivers a faster response to all types of fires, including fast flaming and slow smouldering, while significantly reducing the risk of nuisance alarms. This makes it an ideal “fit-and-forget” solution for installers.
The ST-622T offers a high level of protection in a compact, easy-to-install standalone unit, and the reduced likelihood of false alarms leads to fewer call-backs, saving time and money for both installers and residents. A great example of how FireAngel combines intelligent design with real-world practicality.
QWhy should electrical wholesalers consider stocking hybrid alarm systems?
A. Hybrid alarm systems offer a huge amount of flexibility for installers, which is why they’re an increasingly popular choice in the market. FireAngel’s hybrid solutions are compatible with a wide range of domestic building types, from new builds, retrofits and extensions to older and even Grade I listed properties. This adaptability makes them especially valuable for retrofit projects, where adding hardwired connections may not be practical.
The ability to wirelessly interlink alarms also enhances safety by ensuring that all devices across a property communicate effectively in the event of a fire or CO incident. FireAngel’s hybrid systems are fully compliant with British standards and
allow installers to mix and match different alarm types within a connected system, making them a smart, future-proof option for wholesalers to recommend.
QWith more and more connected technologies appearing in homes, how are modern fire safety solutions able to integrate with smart home systems?
A. Most life-critical fire safety systems, including ours, operate using closed protocols to maintain security and reliability. However, FireAngel has developed a number of innovative solutions to help residents stay connected and in control. One example is our unique FireAngel Predict, an intelligent patented algorithm that analyses data from installed alarms to anticipate potential fire risks. Through the connected FireAngel app, users can receive alerts on their phone, access alarm activation history, and even
“ We see huge potential in expanding integration with other smart home systems.”
view carbon monoxide levels in real-time.
Looking ahead, we see huge potential in expanding integration with other smart home systems. We’re constantly exploring how technology can be used to not only detect danger, but also to communicate it more effectively, especially to those most at risk.
QWhat are FireAngel’s key objectives over the coming months and years?
A. We’re focused on delivering even greater levels of service and support to our partners across the supply chain. With an expert team of specification managers and regional managers covering wholesaler and UK housing channels and a dedicated technical support team, we have a strong foundation in place.
However, we’re not standing still - we’re actively looking to expand our team further to meet growing demand and deliver even more value to wholesalers, installers, UK housing professionals and their end customers.
Our goal is to make specifying and installing compliant, reliable fire and CO safety systems as straightforward and efficient as possible. By continuing to invest in our people and innovation, we’re helping to drive standards forward in the industry, ensuring that safety solutions are not only technically excellent, but also accessible and easy to work with at every stage.

TIME TO DIGITISE
Kilpboard explains why now is the time for UK electrical wholesalers to digitise.
The UK electrical wholesale market, valued at £4.28 billion in 2024, is experiencing significant shifts driven by digital transformation and sustainability initiatives (AMA Research, 2024). To remain competitive, electrical wholesalers are increasingly adopting digital technologies to enhance operations and customer service. By integrating advanced technologies, wholesalers can streamline
operations, reduce errors, and enhance customer satisfaction, positioning themselves competitively in a rapidly evolving market. The timing has never been better for electrical wholesalers to embrace digital transformation.
What is digitisation?
Digitisation describes how companies can improve their processes and operations through digital technologies. For example, digitisation could involve implementing a new ERP system to streamline inventory management. Alternatively, it could provide real time stock visibility, helping electrical wholesalers in preventing costly overstocks.
In either case, such innovations are no longer just nice to have. These days, industry leaders see digitisation as essential to a successful, modern electrical wholesale business.
The evidence speaks for itself. Early adopters routinely report that digitisation has helped them increase productivity, reduce operational costs, and quickly adapt to market changes 'on the fly' while having fully comprehensive control of their stock.
Should wholesalers invest in digital transformation today, or take a wait-andsee approach?
At klipboard, the new name for Kerridge Commercial Systems, we think the time to act is now, and for the following reasons:
Enhanced efficiency and productivity
Electrical wholesalers dealing with complex inventory and high-demand supply chains can replace inaccurate and labour-intensive paper-based systems with precise, real-time digital solutions. By adopting mobile technology on the shop floor and in the warehouse, businesses can eliminate paper duplication, streamline order processing, reduce costly errors, and improve stock management. This not only enhances overall efficiency but also cuts processing time, reduces waste, and helps wholesalers save thousands on administrative overheads.
Real-time data and analytics
Digital ERP systems provide instant insights and snapshots into a wholesaler’s daily operations. As a result, there's no
longer any need to spend days or hours running reports. All the data they need to make better decisions and improve performance is at their fingertips. Also, using an ERP system makes identifying emerging trends much easier. When stock and balance sheets are input digitally, sophisticated algorithms make it much easier for users to successfully forecast demand.
Total inventory management
Keeping accurate stock records is crucial for electrical wholesalers, especially during busy periods. Digital ERP software gives wholesalers a suite of tools to manage every aspect of their inventory, helping them maintain optimal stock levels. Additionally, by ensuring the right products are always available when customers need them, a fully digitised wholesale business is better able to maximise its sales all year round.
Enhanced customer service
In business, building trust through professional relationships is key, and today's digitised electrical wholesalers can offer a seamless and personalised customer experience that their paper-based rivals can't. For example, a digitalised wholesaler's system will have customer relationship management (CRM) capabilities that help them see client preferences, purchase history, and overall engagement. Accordingly, it's easy for digitised wholesaler to offer customers tailored promotions. And, of course, faster and
more accurate order processing is another example of how digitisation can help improve electrical wholesaler’s overall level of customer service.
Streamlined financial management
Wholesale businesses embracing digitisation can also optimise cash flow with integrated accounting and financial reporting features. It's also possible to automate whole processing tasks, such as the administration of accounts payable, removing the need for paper administration, meaning wholesalers can now redeploy valuable resources where they're needed most.
Enhanced supply chain management
Effective supply chain management is critical for electrical wholesalers’ reputations and cash flow. However, digitising this process through a cloudbased ERP system makes it easy to optimise procurement processes, manage supplier relationships, and ensure timely delivery of materials.
Compliance and risk management
One regularly overlooked but critical part of modern business is complying with industry regulations and standards. One of the easiest and most reliable ways of doing this is by digitising how your electrical wholesale business administers sensitive information. Users scan documents onto a secure, cloud-based ERP system, where they're available for audits and inspections.
Integration with ecommerce
As the electrical industry increasingly moves online, ERP systems' integration with ecommerce platforms means that wholesalers can tap into new revenue streams. By offering online ordering and customer self-service options, businesses can expand their reach and access new markets at any time.
Sustainability and waste reduction
Digitisation contributes to sustainability by optimising resource usage and reducing waste. Fully digital ERP systems encourage their users to send PDFs instead of printing and collating their user manuals online, again dramatically helping cut carbon usage. Further reductions occur in the full digitisation of paper-based processes and monitoring systems that help wholesalers eliminate unnecessary fuel waste with their deliveries.
Maximise sales
The Luckins online catalogue is an essential sales tool for electrical wholesalers, offering up to date product information, on over one million items from hundreds of manufacturers. With detailed specifications, images and related accessories, it helps wholesalers better meet customer needs.
Conclusion
Going digital is the only way electrical businesses can stay successful in an increasingly demanding and competitive marketplace. Those businesses that have yet to enjoy the benefits of digitalisation should act before they are left behind.

OUTSIDE INFLUENCE
Sales for landscape lighting increase at this time of year with people and businesses look to make the most of their outdoor spaces as the evenings begin to get warmer. Equally there is a growing awareness of the climate and the need to be responsible. And most councils insist that outdoor lighting meet their DarkSky initiatives to avoid light pollution and help protect nocturnal wildlife.
It all means that you need to consider what products you stock and the advice that you offer contractors involved in specifying and installing outdoor lighting.
Sustainable by design
A sustainable lighting scheme will direct the right amount of light where it is needed and avoid any spillage or glare. It will do so using minimal energy and only provide light when it is needed. Remember our eye is drawn to light and it needs balancing with shadow. Less is often better when you want to pick out features.
sustainable landscape lighting is growing, with people wanting to socialise outdoors but also wishing to protect the very environment that they are enjoying, according to Mitchel Waite, product manager at Collingwood Lighting.
These considerations affect what products you sell. Typically, a contractor will need outdoor downlights, ground lights, wall lights, lighting bollards and even LED strip lights. Spike lights are also great to highlight features and with up to 2m of flexible cable the customer can move them around for flexibility.
Energy saving
Energy efficiency is at the top of most people’s minds when it comes to sustainability and LED lighting is the most efficient artificial light source you can use, but some luminaires are better than others.
Many still think about wattage as a measure for lighting, but we should concentrate on lumens, which measures the amount of visible light that comes from a source.
For energy efficiency look at the product’s Lumens per Watt, the higher the figure the more efficient it is. As a quick check, just like other products, luminaires must display their energy efficiency rating on a label, using a scale from A to G.
It’s well worth checking a product’s energy efficiency regularly because manufacturers bring out new more efficient ranges all the time, for example our new landscape lighting range has improved its efficacy by up to 50%.
Lighting control
Sustainable lighting means that people should only use outdoor lighting when they need it. Lighting control enables them to do this. It can be as simple as PIR sensors on luminaires or electrical circuits, light sensors, on/off switching or a timer.
Some customers will want more control, giving you the chance to upsell sophisticated control systems. The contractor can for example link a customer’s outdoor lighting to their smart phone. This gives them simple control of different zones, the ability to set schedules and turn the lighting on and off remotely to both save energy and create different scenarios depending on how they use the space.
Avoiding light pollution
While we want to enjoy the outdoors as daylight fades, people want to be good neighbours and not affect others, the night sky or nocturnal wildlife. In many areas local councils insist that any installation meets their DarkSky initiatives.
It means that the contractor must accurately light the area that needs it and avoid any light spillage, which causes glare. To achieve this, they need luminaires that have hoods or shielding so that they can target the light. They also need to think about the beam angle that they need for an application.
If they do need uplights, perhaps to highlight a feature or some architecture, then they must contain the light to the area being lit. Luminaires with asymmetric beams will focus the light in one direction making it easier to achieve this.
They should also avoid light spilling upwards to prevent the nighttime glow that we see above urban areas. To do so you need to check a fitting’s upward light
output ratio (ULOR). This is the percentage of light that it emits above the horizontal plane. For DarkSky approval it should have an ULOR of less than 0.5% or 50 lumens.
Wildlife friendly lighting
Upward light spillage will also affect nocturnal animals and insects such as bats, owls and moths. Bluer light in particular will affect navigation, physiology, breeding and their general health.
Factors such as avoiding upward spillage, reducing the time that light is on with lighting control, and accurate targeting to avoid any light spillage and glare will all help.
But one of the biggest ways to reduce the effect on wildlife is to check the correlated colour temperature (CCT) of a fitting. Warmer colours of 3000K or lower are less likely to scatter in the atmosphere than higher colour temperatures and will have less effect on wildlife and on light pollution. Ideally the lower the CCT the better; we would recommend using 2700K or even 2200K sources.
The circular economy
And finally, when thinking about the environment and landscape lighting we need to take a closer look at how sustainable the lighting products are that we are using.
Customers want to move away from the throwaway culture of the past. It means that you should have an eye on the expected lifespan of a product and question how easy it is to repair and replace parts to extend its life.
Good manufacturers will have adapted their production to use modular parts. This makes it easier to upgrade it in the future, simpler to replace worn out parts, gives them the ability to customise products so that you can offer more options without increasing your stock profile, and it makes it easier to recycle materials and reuse parts at the end of the product’s life.

BRIGHT IDEA
As the warmer weather approaches and people look to make the most of their outdoor spaces, well-designed, efficient and reliable outdoor lighting becomes a desirable element for homeowners. Shyel Start, Senior Product Manager at Luceco, examines what switched on electrical wholesalers can do to make the most of this seasonal opportunity.
This is a key time for consumers to think about enhancing their outdoor spaces with thoughtful well-chosen lighting solutions. By stocking an outdoor lighting range, electrical wholesalers can not only provide the products that contractors demand to satisfy their customers but also increase their own profits.
Enhanced security
A well-lit home, especially including outdoor areas, is a simple and effective deterrent to opportunistic thieves taking advantage of the darker nights. Burglars prefer to work under the cover of darkness as it allows them to move undetected and reduces their risk of being caught. When a property is well lit, it increases the risk of them being seen by neighbours, passers by and surveillance cameras, making it a much less attractive target. Motion sensors are particularly effective as they instantly illuminate the area, whilst properly lit driveways, entries and gardens leave few places for an intruder to hide.
Comfort and convenience
Providing a level of convenience for the homeowner, especially during the summer months when people make the most of the warmer weather, outdoor lighting allows consumers to comfortably remain outside after dark, extending the amount of time they spend enjoying their gardens.
In addition, as well as enhancing the aesthetics of a home, well-considered outdoor lighting improves safety by deterring burglars, helps to prevent accidents and boosts the effectiveness of surveillance systems. It’s a smart

STREET WISE
Off-grid, renewable energy specialist Kathryn Adams, Product Director, Prolectric, takes a deep dive into the future trends of solar street lighting.
With British summertime officially here, sunshine is top of everyone’s agenda, especially when you’re in the business of turning our planet’s most abundant natural source of power into clean, reliable, renewable energy. We are on a mission to sustainably light up our UK streets. Outlining the benefits and potential pitfalls on all you need to know when procuring and purchasing fit-for-purpose street lighting solutions, Prolectric has recently produced a comprehensive whitepaper which provides guidance on the future trends in UK solar street lighting.
Strong performance
The market has recently been flooded by poor-quality, cheaper solar streetlights, that do not perform in British winters, as a result Prolectric felt compelled to take a stand and increase the awareness of what makes a good solar streetlight work all year round.
A recent deep dive clearly shows the market is strongly trending towards sustainable and smart solutions, driven by advances in solar technology, and energy
efficient LEDs, with the goal of reducing emissions in alignment with the UK's netzero ambitions. However, within this shift, there are numerous issues that buyers should be aware of. First and foremost, compliance with British standards is an important factor when choosing solar streetlights. Purchasers should be confident in the quality of all aspects of the
streetlight, top down and including the column, to avoid potential liability.
Panel size is the key to ensuring that the light operates all night in the winter, not battery size. Prolectric always ensures a 5:1 ratio on panel yield compared to light output. Finally, the prevalence of ‘All-inone’ lights is growing in the UK, which is concerning as solar lights require a south facing panel. All-in-one lights compromise on this to ensure the light points in the desired direction, but during winter, with an insufficient amount of solar yield the light will not work. This is why Prolectric only offers split lights where the panel and light are separate.
Inflated claims and greenwashing
The UK is a complex country when it comes to solar street lighting. Areas in the South of England can receive 30% more sunlight than northern Scotland and whatever the latitude.
British winter nights can be notoriously dark and gloomy with up to 16.5 hours of darkness. This means that solar street lighting needs to be designed and tested in the UK to be sure that performance will
live up to the manufacturer’s claims. Some solar street lights may claim excellent performance, but suppliers sometimes base their solar power yield assumptions on a perfect day in a sunny foreign country. This is misleading and purchasers should be aware of inflated claims.
Increased solar integration
Solar street lighting is gaining popularity for both residential and commercial projects due to its long-term cost-savings and environmental benefits. Off-grid solar lights which don't require extensive cabling are especially attractive for new residential and commercial developments, reducing both installation and operational costs.
Companies like Prolectric have established reliable, fully solar-powered streetlights, suitable for UK weather conditions and appealing to sectors that seek low-maintenance, carbon-neutral solutions, such as housing estates, business parks and public spaces.
Smart technology for energy efficiency
With the rise of smart cities, smart street lighting systems are becoming essential. These systems allow remote management and real time monitoring, enabling customised lighting schedules, dimming and precise energy tracking. Enzen’s ZenLumen system for example, uses smart technology to adjust lighting based on need and time, helping commercial and industrial estates cut energy usage by up to 46% by controlling lighting individually or in zones. This not only improves energy efficiency but also contributes to better safety and lower light pollution.
LED advancements and durability
The shift to LEDs continues, given their lower energy consumption and longer lifespan. LED based solar streetlights are now more robust and energy efficient which makes them suitable for the UK's fluctuating weather. Solar lights with integrated LED technology are now commonly used in areas like parking, pathways and open spaces, particularly in business and on commercial estates where sustainability goals are important, whilst maintaining consistent lighting.
Enhanced appeal for property developers
For property developers and commercial estates managers, adopting solar lighting aligns with both regulatory pressures and public demand for sustainable development. Annual expenditure on electricity could reach £379m by 2030 for the UK’s mains-powered streetlights. Solar powered streetlighting enhances the appeal of residential and business areas by reducing energy costs and meeting ecofriendly expectations, a significant draw in today's cost-driven market.
The move towards greener infrastructure is expected to continue as solar and LED technologies advance, making them more viable for large scale adoption. These trends underline the growing emphasis on smart, sustainable lighting infrastructure as part of a broader commitment to ecofriendly development in the UK's residential and commercial sectors.
“ The move towards greener infrastructure is expected to continue as solar and LED technologies advance.”
Impact on local communities and Dark Sky accreditation
At Persimmon Homes’ new Sycamore rise development in Oxfordshire, 40 Prolectric AE3 solar streetlights, with a steel column, have been installed across approximately 175 plots on the developer’s new private housing estate. As a result, the residents now benefit from zero-maintenance and zero-carbon emitting solar lighting, which has eliminated the need for mains power.
Solar streetlights have significant benefits for local residents compared to traditional mains-connected lighting. There is less noise during installation and less light pollution as the default brightness before being activated can be set to dim or even off, depending on the requirements of the project. Prolectric is Dark Sky Approved, an objective, third-party certification for products, designs and completed projects
that minimise glare, reduce light trespass and don’t pollute the night sky. This is important for both people and wildlife, with bat conservation a particularly important topic in the UK. Prolectric streetlights are designed to focus the light on the specific areas that need illumination, minimising the effect on wildlife and the night sky. When it comes to the environment, solar street lighting has many advantages over mains connected lighting, both in terms of reducing ongoing carbon emissions and lowering embedded carbon.
British design solutions
When it comes to solar lighting, both temporary and permanent solutions, Prolectric lights are designed and manufactured in a facility near Bristol, with UK weather specifically in mind. Prolectric has been championing quieter, safer and more environmentally friendly sites for over a decade, as the first to introduce solar street lighting to the UK in 2011.
To date, Prolectric has provided more lights than any other UK installer, with over 15,000 solar streetlights nationwide. Gamechanging solar technology provides a practical way for businesses to achieve their carbon-reduction commitments, enabling a simple move away from polluting fossilfuelled or mains powered systems. ALARM CALL
When the George and Abbotsford Hotel in Melrose urgently required an upgrade to its existing fire alarm system, Safe Services installed a new Advanced MxPro 5 analogue addressable fire panel to provide industry-leading protection.
The George and Abbotsford Hotel is located a five minute walk from the historic St Cuthbert’s Way and Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders. A popular, busy hotel it attracts guests who are keen to walk in the footsteps of St Cuthbert across unspoiled countryside, as well as visit ancient market towns, and local historic sites, such as Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott. With guest and staff safety of paramount importance, the hotel needed an upgrade to its existing fire alarm system to bring it up to Category L2 coverage standards as the current system was obsolete and was starting to fail.
Integration
Fire and security service providers, Safe Services, were contacted to upgrade the fire system and installed an Advanced MxPro 5 four-loop analogue addressable fire panel, with all four loops used to meet the requirements of this large hotel. The Advanced panel was also seamlessly
integrated with EMS Firecell wireless devices. Due to the size of the hotel, it would have been impossible to install cabling because of the extensive downtime that would be needed to fit the cables. The fire system was also interfaced with a kitchen suppression system to provide extra protection.
“We are very happy with the Advanced system and the installation by Safe Services. It was quite a complex project as the hotel is a big building. The previous fire safety system was obsolete, it was a cabled system and the cables were obsolete too. It would have been very costly to install a cabled system as it was so complex. We decided on a radio system and that took a week to install,”
said Graham Barrett, Owner of the George and Abbotsford Hotel.
Graeme Millar, Fire Technical Sales Engineer at Safe Systems, said: “The George and Abbotsford Hotel required a new fire alarm system to meet Category L2. Housed in a large building, both the fire alarm system and cabling were obsolete. However, installing new cabling would have meant major disruption to this busy hotel due to the building’s size. We therefore integrated the Advanced panel with the wireless EMS Firecell. The Advanced MxPro 5 is our panel of choice as it’s a trusted and reliable panel with our design and installation teams. Combining the Advanced MxPro 5 with the EMS equipment works very well and we have used this combination in a number of our projects.”
Neil Parkin, Sales Manager at Advanced, said: “In hotels, it is vital to ensure fire alarm systems meet the latest standards and so protect guests and staff. Our MxPro 5 panels are designed to make life as easy as possible, delivering robust protection and compliance that offers real peace of mind, all backed up by our highly rated technical support. Selecting wireless equipment when installing a fire system offers minimal disruption for hotels providing both time and cost benefits.”
Multiprotocol
MxPro 5 is the fire industry’s leading multiprotocol fire panel and is certified by FM Approvals to the EN 54 standard. It offers customers a choice of four detector protocols and a completely open installer network, backed up by free training and support. MxPro 5 can be used in singleloop, single-panel format, or easily
configured into high-speed networks of up to 200 panels covering huge areas. Ease of installation and configuration, as well as its wide range of peripheral options, make MxPro 5 customisable to almost any application.
As well as compatibility with leading wired detector brands, MxPro 5’s versatile wireless capabilities make it easy to install robust fire alarm systems whilst saving crucial time, cost and disruption.
Harnessing the power of proven technology, MxPro 5’s wireless solutions are scalable, adaptable and reliable – for complete fire safety peace of mind.
Wireless solutions not only mean lower visual and physical impact, but they are also faster and cheaper to install, making them an increasingly popular alternative for sites where downtime is not an option, or re-wiring would prove disruptive. Thanks to two-way communication with the panel, battery
replacement and fault reporting can also be worked into the ongoing maintenance schedule via the panel service tools.
The MxPro 5’s stand-out false alarm management capabilities are available as standard and are ideal in hotel applications. AlarmCalm delivers unprecedented control of verification and investigation delays. By dividing sites up into virtual false alarm ‘building areas’ independent of fire zones, much more precise control of false alarm management and reduction strategies can be achieved that exactly fit the needs of each part of a building. An optional AlarmCalm button allows trained occupants to verify if they believe a local fire signal is a false alarm too – a highly effective way of eliminating unwanted alarms.

AIRMASTER EXTRACTOR FANS
Whilst the Airmaster brand by the CED Electrical Group is best known for its space heating and cooling products, it also boasts one of the industry’s widest ranges of extractor fans.
We start with four and six inch fans designed for wall or ceiling installation. The second (XF) four and six inch series comes in three standard voltage versions – a basic fan, a pull cord option and a timer model, plus double insulated versions of both.
Completing the ceiling/wall extractor fan range are the (XFE) low voltage 12v double insulated safety fans, with or without separate controller and designed for fitting within 0.6m of a bath or shower, where current regulations prevent the use of conventional fans.
And finally, the Airmaster range concludes with the complete four inch In-line shower extractor fan kits, either standard or complete with timer, centrifugal extractor fans plus four and six inch PVC or aluminium ducting.

ELEX 2025
As trade professionals continue to walk a financial tightrope through the risks of non-paying customers, Garry Lewis, Tradesman and Inventor/Founder, details the impact this has had on his life and why he’s on a personal mission to create change.
Mental health and wellbeing is a real issue across society right now, and the electrical trade is just as vulnerable to the effects as any other sector. We’re constantly reminded of the statistics – that two trade professionals will take their own lives every day – but do we ever stop to ask ourselves what the real cause might be and what we can do to help improve things?
Understanding the challenges
Personally, I believe you need to experience life as a trade professional, and to walk a few days in their shoes, to fully understand the challenges that they face on a daily basis. Only then can you look to provide real solutions to the problems. So, I’m sure you’re now wondering why this particular issue is so personal to me. Let me explain... I lost everything I’d worked for because of a dishonest contractor. His actions had a devastating impact on my family and my mental health. As a result, I attempted to take my own life as I felt like I’d let my family down.
I have over 35 years’ experience as an asphalt roofing contractor and have worked at all levels. At my peak I was operating the business with a large number of gangs, providing services up and down the country for commercial giants like Woolworths, Lunn Poly and Courtaulds, as well as councils, large contracting companies and the general public.
“ Trade professionals have had enough of working in an environment where they don’t feel valued, respected, or appreciated for the service they provide.”
Over those near four decades there have been many highs and lows, but I started to notice that when I did hit the lows there was a common denominator that led to these – the process. It was a flawed process and this was the reason why things were able to go wrong.
The tip of the iceberg
Trade professionals have had enough of working in an environment where they don’t feel valued, respected, or appreciated for the service they provide. Indeed, recent research shows that 85% of tradespeople are pessimistic about the future of their trade, with many considering a change in career. And who can blame them?
For starters, we rarely get any kind of commitment, yet we’re expected to purchase the materials for a particular job or project and then carry out all the work in the hope that we might just be lucky enough to get paid.
To facilitate this, tradespeople will mainly acquire the materials on account from their local wholesaler or merchant, putting their own finances at risk in the event that the customer fails to pay. Again, the research shows that 77% of tradespeople have experienced a customer failing topay for work completed.
Further still, 1.7 million homeowners delay payments to try and force lower prices, causing cashflow problems which can result in the business that has carried
out the work having to juggle its finances. We do also have to acknowledge that it’s not just the end customer who contributes towards some of the issues.
Although rogue traders are in the minority, they still do an enormous amount of damage to the reputation of the hardworking, honest and reliable professionals out there. It’s estimated that rogue traders cost the UK economy £10 billion a year in lost revenue with consumers putting off work for the fear of engaging with a spurious tradesperson.
So, to this end, and to put it simply, the good, honest professionals out there have had enough!
How can we change things?
In my opinion, if things are to change then we need to start by creating a new environment that helps to build trust between both consumers and tradespeople. It’s for this reason that I’ve invested my pension into building an app called Recommend & Share that provides a predicted user journey and caters for the wants, needs, concerns and frustrations of both parties, helping to ensure a positive outcome for everyone.
This user journey allows both parties to have an equal relationship, providing them with transparency, recognition, accountability and reassurance. To make adoption easier, it is free for both parties to use and always will be.
Although it’s still early days, I’ve been reaching out to prominent industry organisations, as well as wholesalers and merchants, to ask if they’d be willing to show their support for this new movement. The feedback has been overwhelming and inspirational.
Over the next little while we’ll be looking to communicate with tradespeople to give them the opportunity to join what we’re doing, allowing them to fight back, take control and change their industry for the better.
As it stands, I’m currently working on the next phase of development, which I believe will really help to revolutionise the current process and guarantee positive outcomes for consumers, tradespeople and wholesalers. In turn, this will allow reputations and relationships to prosper and flourish – a win, win for everyone.
“ Although rogue traders are in the minority, they still do an enormous amount of damage.”
