There can be no question that such a policy sets a very dangerous and somewhat sinister appendage to the green agenda. What next? Suppliers of traditional housebuilding materials being penalised in favour of perceived more energy conscious off site fabricators? The mind boggles, and it is clearly not the heat getting to us.

Not unsurprisingly, the UK heating industry has submitted alternative options to the Government and the EUA is far from alone in asking those in power to decide whose side they are on, the consumer and the British manufacturer or the energy suppliers and foreign importers?Backin more innocent times, those ultimate masters of silliness, the Monty Python team knew how to end a sketch that had simply gone too far by bringing on a random character to impart the immortal words: “stop this, it’s getting silly now.” We could certainly all do with a similar dose of reality right now.

“It’s been open season here in the silly isles!”

Facing a cost-of-living crisis, with energy bills across the board soaring, Whitehall bureaucrats have devised a cunning new plan. Called the Market Mechanism, this new scheme will penalise British boiler manufacturers if they do not fit heat pumps, even though the Government’s advisers acknowledge that this will increase heating bills by an average of 10 per cent.

silly beggars belief!

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER SEPTEMBER 2022 I7

Mike Foster, CEO of the Energy Utilities Alliance (EUA), summed up an increasingly incredulous mood within the industry: “I can’t recall a more ridiculous policy than the so-called market mechanism. We have always said this smacks of Soviet-style planning, with bureaucrats telling industry what they must sell, regardless of what the consumer might want, or afford, and with huge financial penalties facing already hard-pressed British businesses if they disobey Whitehall.” In fact, one leading UK boiler manufacturer told us that it would probably be in their interests to give the heat pumps away rather than face a potential £5,000 fine for selling what, these days, are highly engineered and extremely efficient boilers. We understand similar “mechanisms” are also likely to impact the motoring industry with stinging penalties imposed for not hitting electric vehicle targets and you can bet that other sectors of industry will similarly come under an unwelcome spotlight in the coming months.

In Fleet Street circles, for years it was affectionately dubbed as the silly season. That period from early July to September when everyone, including the news hounds, were on their hols and big news stories were decidedly thin on the ground. Instead, they would simply make some up, or elevate a truly ludicrous tale to such levels that it would become an indelible part of popular folk law. Think “Freddie Starr ate my hamster!” Back in the early ‘90s we especially recall a particularly ridiculous headline grabber involving a gang of builders who were banged to rights by the local council for their early morning on site renditions of a popular song from the sixties: “Come, Mr Tallyman, tally me banana, daylight come, and I want to go home”. It ran and ran for weeks – to much amusement. Fast forward to the summer of 2022 and it’s all too apparent that the silly season is still very much alive and well… the only difference being that today the stories don’t need any artificial embellishments from our media chums. It would appear that fact really is stranger than fiction, from the toppling of – in election terms at least – one of the most successful Conservative leaders ever and the painfully drawn out and undignified process of replacing him, to train strikes without commuters, because they are all still working from home, and, of course, the real icing on a rapidly melting cake, the great British obsession with the weather. It’s been open season here in the silly isles! Of course, the heatwave of –surprise, surprise – mid-July, which saw record temperatures for all of two days in some, but certainly not all, parts of the UK, was quite literally a heaven-sent opportunity for those habitual harbourers of doom and gloom who couldn’t wait to impart apocalyptic type tales of death and destruction. “Thousands will die” screamed one of many scaremongering headlines, and, of course, there were no shortages of helpful Covid-inspired public information messages to “stay cool” and “keep a bottle of water handy”. If they weren’t already, our European cousins must be laughing on the other side of their evenly bronzed faces at the total over-reaction of daily situations which they face and apparently cope with quite comfortably each and every summer.

Amongst all this mayhem, there was another story, hidden away, which might just take the biscuit in highlighting one of the silliest decisions ever made during this summer –or any other.

Current government policy believes heat pump costs will fall by 25-50 per cent by 2025 and reach parity with a gas boiler by 2030. The average heat pump costs around £10,000 to install compared to a combi-boiler replacement of £1,500. The Heat and Building Strategy, published in October 2021 suggests that increasing volumes of UK heat pump installations will bring costs down. Evidence uncovered by the EUA, however, indicates heat pump installations in France average £11,000, similar to the UK figure, but last year 537,000 heat pumps were sold in France, compared to 50,000 units in the UK. This suggests that higher volumes do not reduce costs and presents a challenge to current UK Seepolicy.this month’s viewpoint on Page 7 FURTHER INFORMATION VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ001 INFORMATION VISIT: nearly a third –equivalent to about 37,000 than 130,000 UK’s embrace around 30 per they extremely unlikely

The analysis of the latest records from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) by SiteStak reveals fewer illegal dumping incidents from ‘construction, demolitions and excavations’. It found a 54.55 per cent reduction in such dumping instances in the last five years in England and a 23.27 per cent decrease in the last year alone. However, with construction, demolition and excavation waste accounting for 62 per cent of all UK waste, disposal from UK sites more broadly remains a significant problem for the environment.

Almost one in ten (8 per cent) do not know how the new legislation will affect how fire doors are specified and four in five respondents say end clients do not require third-party certified fire doors to be specified. Positively, however, 55 per cent of respondents specify or use fire doors that are thirdparty certified. happyvector071/Adobe

RED ALERT UK Government urged to reintroduce red diesel to cut building

The Government should make reintroducing tax cuts on diesel a priority if it is serious about tackling construction inflation, claims the National Federation of Builders (NFB). With fuel thefts rising, and diesel now at over £2 a litre, the trade body said it was renewing its campaign to press for red diesel to be used on building sites. Red diesel fuel previously benefitted from a 47 pence per litre rebate. DOOR ALARM

Over a quarter of a million extra construction workers needed by 2026, finds CITB New figures from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) forecast an extra 266,000 workers will be required to meet projected UK construction demand by 2026 (53,200 workers per year). Construction employment could reach a high of nearly 2.78 million workers by 2026. Growth is predicted across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and all major sectors are forecast to experience recruitment pinch points.

I have not read the proposed legislation (my blood pressure is high enough already thank you), but I cannot see how “emissions” –are those putative carbon dioxide emissions, do you know? – will be reduced by 30 per cent. Thirty per cent of what? Do they say?

I picked up a recent issue of Professional Builder and was fascinated to read your op-ed regarding our supposed current climate “crisis” and the contribution made to it by of all things – conservatories.  Your bewildered incomprehension is fully echoed by this respondent, together with a hair-tearing frustration at the mindless stupidity of politicians.“Newregulations being brought in from June of this year will mean that conservatories will need to show they don’t create unwanted solar gain.....”  This, you report, the government says, is because British summers are going to become 40° Celsius summers. Do you know if they have a definition of a 40° Celsius summer ?

My incredulity at the scientific and engineering ignorance of our politicians was already set pretty-well at maximum, but I’m going I think to need to recalibrate the dial to accommodate this new information. We have solar water heating panels – we must be evil people –and I presume that having them and having hot water, is somehow sucking more heat out of the sun?

You report that: “It’s all part of a government commitment to improve domestic ventilation and reduce emissions by 30%”.    Emissions of what? Solar radiation is received by Earth overall on average at a rate of approximately 240W/mtr squared +/- about 10.  If you had a conservatory and you covered it externally with insulaton –even white insulation to enhance albedo – then although your house would be cooler, mother Earth would not.

I must change my ways and go and glue myself to a motorway somewhere.Thisstuff is on a par with the announcement not that long ago that all electric kettles would have to be no more than – was it 800W? The idea emanating from the civil service geniuses in Westminster being that raising the temperature of 1ltr of water from say 10° Celsius to 100° Celsius would miraculously requires a smaller amount of energy than by using a 2kW kettle. One despairs. I wish you more strength to your elbow. Bob Trueman, via email PB: Many thanks for you most articulate and well informed response, Bob (you can have a job here anytime) although I suppose we have to concede that for once the Government got it almost right in predicting 40 degrees of heat this summer. Although, of course, just as one swallow doesn’t make a summer so one day of extreme heat doesn’t necessarily signal a complete global climate meltdown from so called solar ...problems solved HOT TOPIC

V12 Footwear has stepped up to the challenge in supporting the sterling charitable work of Band of Builders. Professional Builder reports on the latest news from the safety specialist and the tradespeople who are giving back to the industry’s in need. CIRCLEFULL

The V12 BoB Safety Boot launched nearly a year ago, here is what Charlie Turner, Head of Sales and Marketing at V12 had to share about the project so far. “We are so pleased that we are coming up to the anniversary of the BoB boot launch! It’s been an extremely exciting and successful project to watch unfold, with both seeing the absolutely fantastic work that Band of Builders have been carrying out but also seeing people protecting themselves and supporting others. We look forward to continue serving tradespeople with industryleading safety boots whilst continuing to raise funds and awareness for such a great cause.”

To learn more about Band of Builders, get involved on an upcoming project or apply for support visit WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ016 and don’t forget to head over to WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ017 to watch Cameron complete his backflip and more in the new V12 BoB Safety Boot video.

Can anyone in this group do a backflip?” Not the most common post to see in the We Are Band of Builders Facebook group but surprisingly it worked. V12 Footwear, in partnership with Expert Trades, had developed a new video concept to raise the awareness and showcase the unique features of the BoB Safety Boot. A specially designed safety boot where £5 of every purchase goes to support the Band of Builders, a registered charity that helps members of the UK construction industry battling illness or injury through the completion of practical projects.Chris Joy replied to the Facebook group post with ‘My Son can’, and it’s here the story begins to unfold. Chris, a plasterer by trade, was a beneficiary of Band of Builders after having his health deteriorate rapidly. At the age of 40 was diagnosed with a rare and life-long degenerative condition known as Cerebellur Ataxia and is a wheelchair user 50 per cent of the time. It just so happens that Chris’ son Cameron is an extremely talented dancer and understands the trade given his Dad’s career. Within three weeks was on a building site shooting a promotional video for the V12 BoB boots, raising awareness and funds for the very charity that supported his family. Cameron shared the impact Band of Builders had while on site filming with Expert Trades. “It was amazing what Band of Builders did and the impact was massive. They made my Dad more independent and not have to worry about anyone else. He felt the natural feeling of being a burden to everyone. But having that driveway there for him is just, it was massive, amazing for him to feel more independent and life-changing for him. Being involved in this project and supporting the charity and a company, V12, committed to supporting Band of Builders, well it’s my way of saying thank you.”

STILL STRONGGOING

Plasterer Mark Felix works hard and, when he’s competing in Strong Man events, plays even harder. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones hears from one of the sport’s longest running and most successful participants.

Whilst his introduction to the sport may have been by chance, his longevity in the discipline has been thanks to a lifetime of dedication, which includes working out for at least four evenings a week. All that is on top of plying one of the most physically demanding of the industry’s trades – a double life which is fuelled by a high protein diet that consists of a whopping 7,500 calories a day.

“This year was my 17th World’s Strongest Man appearance,” continues the 56-year-old. “It certainly gets tougher as you get older, but it’s about training smart as well as hard. There’s no doubt that it’s difficult working and competing because plastering itself puts a lot of pressure on the joints, particularly the shoulders. After work I go home to change, and I’m straight out again to the gym. Each session will become more intense in the run up to a tournament, and the work I do to prepare varies on what events are coming up.”

“I’ve always trained throughout my life and have been involved in bodybuilding from an early age but came to Strong Man events relatively late,” Mark reveals. “In fact, it was when the guys that owned a gym that I frequented organised a strong man competition. I was invited just to make up the numbers and I actually came third. It was obvious I had a talent for it and wanted to see how far I could take it.”

Mark Felix has combined a life on the tools with competing in World’s Strongest Man events and is now a legend of the sport. In fact, with over 100 competitions under his belt, and counting, Mark is one of its most prolific contestants and a World’s Strongest Man ‘hall of famer’.

Mark made his World’s Strongest Man debut in the Bahamas in 2004 and since then the achievements and accolades have kept coming. “I came fourth in the event in 2006,” he recalls proudly, “and over my career have broken world records in the Cannonball Hold, Hercules Hold [pictured bottom right of previous page], Rolling Thunder, a single handed deadlift with a revolving handle – Captain of Crush – Silver Bullet, which is a squeezing grip test, and the Vice Grip Viking Challenge. I’ve also been unbeaten for the last seven years in deadlift reps.”

Indeed, known as the ‘The Grip King’ the Lancashire plasterer excels at anything that requires a firm hold. Not only that, but he’s now the oldest competitor in the World’s Strongest Man and has appeared in the most individual competitions. Add to that second-place finishes in both Britain’s Strongest Man and Europe’s Strongest Man and the remarkable longevity of this elite athlete and tradesman’s career is put into context.

“The reason I’ve kept going for so long is because I love it,” concludes Mark. “I’ve had the opportunity to travel to some amazing places and have made lifelong friends. I listen to my body and at the moment I’m feeling great – as long as that’s the case I’ll keep going.”

It’s the ‘Work Strong’ message that Mark epitomises that has led Regatta Professional to enlist him as the face of its workwear range. “As a plasterer by day, and one of the most recognisable faces of Strong Man, Mark always needs workwear as tough as him,” explains Megan Pacey, Marketing Manager for the brand. “We’ve loved watching him for years and the partnership marks a new beginning for us as a brand as we welcome Mark as our first ambassador.ever The collection has been created with Mark’s dayjob in mind and he’s done the hard graft of putting each piece through its paces to make sure it fits the bill for tradies across the UK. The range is not only durable but affordable too and we’re excited to unveil the full collection soon.”

GET YOUR LIFE BACK!

Q How long does it take to learn to use? JC It doesn’t take long, and our customers can vouch for this. If you can spare an hour for a demo and initial walk through you will find it is super simple – it will save you hours and hours of admin time.

JC It’s packed with features to keep on top of a job from start to finish. For instance, you can create quotes on the spot, send out invoices or chase late payment with automated SMS messaging. The visual calendar gives a complete overview of what jobs are booked, the dates they’re booked for, and their progression. If you have a team, they can be assigned to a job in seconds by just dragging and dropping their name on it. They’ll automatically receive notification via our App, so there’s no need to phone or meet with them. You can see where your teams are, where they’ve been, how long they’ve been on a job, and whether they’ll make the next one on time! Bigger jobs can be broken down into milestones, which makes managing costs MANAGEMENT

Q What problems does it solve? JC Despite the digital revolution being over 30 years old, more than 75 per cent of tradespeople still use manual systems and processes to manage their business. Many still use paper-based systems. This is inefficient and can lead to a poor work life balance. It hampers cash flow, lowers profits, can be confusing and causes significant stress for the business owner. Fergus, however, streamlines and connects all the different aspects of a business. From initial quoting, through managing jobs, materials and contractors, to invoicing and chasing late payment, Fergus helps business owners keep track of all areas of their business by making processes more efficient – and in doing so it removes stress and financial hardship.

Q Where did the idea of Fergus come Jamesfrom?Chillman (JC) Fergus was created by Dan Pollard, an experienced plumber from New Zealand who has run his own business for decades. He became increasingly frustrated by the difficulty he had keeping up with admin. Often he found himself snowed under and his work life balance suffered. Using his own experiences, he sought to develop a system which saved time, streamlined admin and helped people get paid. In short, he wanted to help tradespeople to recapture their quality of life and spend more time doing the things they actually enjoyed. The result was Fergus, named after his trusty best friend, Fergus, his dog. Since then, the business has grown and after significant investment, we are now in eight countries serving over 18,000 trade companies and counting.

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER SEPTEMBER 2022 I 19 BUSINESS SOLUTIONS JOB

Professional Builder talks to James Chillman, UK Country Manager of Fergus, the job management software, which has launched in the UK and aims to give tradespeople a better work/ life balance.

Q What are its main features?

FOR

JC All aspects of the business are controllable within the easy-to-use, and visually attractive, status board. And they all work seamlessly together so, for example, quoting and invoicing is made simple and pain free. By uploading price books, material costs will appear in quotes automatically, and can be adjusted by creating tiered mark-ups for different clients or job types. Mark-ups can be added to materials for smaller jobs, or discounts can be offered where beneficial, such as for repeat customers. Fergus takes the pain and stress out of admin. So, more time can be dedicated to actually getting work done and earning money, and spending time with family and friends.

JOB MANAGEMENT and progress easier. Changes can be instantly made to a job. The cost and purchase of all materials can be logged, templated gas and electricity certificates can be filled in, while hazards and on-site incidents can be logged, and sign offs recorded. The App summarizes each job, too. So, if it’s going over budget or taking longer than expected, it’s easy to see why and fix it.

Q Can it help your business to grow?

JC We have a Free plan which is a simplified version of the software, with no commitment. A ‘Basic’ package at just £20/ month significantly reduces your admin time and any duplication on jobs and then the ‘Professional’ package at £30/ month is a fully-fledged trade toolkit giving you in depth insights into your business. MORE DETAILS ON FERGUS, AND TO BOOK A DEMO, VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ020

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

JC By helping your business to run smoothly and efficiently, the software reduces stress and the likelihood of burnout. By streamlining admin, revenue is optimised. More time can be spent attracting new clients and doing paid work. With invoicing and chasing late payments made easy, balance sheets are healthier too.

Q How much does it cost?

Q How does it help to juggle the work/life balance?

Q How do Spetz trade users make sure that they’re in control of who their services are being communicated to and where?

The Spetz App is helping tradespeople worldwide to win more work by putting them in direct contact with homeowners. Professional Builder quizzes the Spetz team on the features and benefits of the app.

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER SEPTEMBER 2022 I 23

A homeowner can post a job from a selection of over 400 different services, in an average of ten seconds with images and a description of what’s required. The result is a connection at a time of their choosing with the most suitable tradesperson for that job and location.

A Unlike other platforms, Spetz doesn’t charge any membership fees, just to sit on a directory or charge for the lead where they still have to bid against other tradespeople, we also don’t take any commission on their jobs either. Instead, a small fee, which starts as little as £6 for each service call, is only levied on the tradesperson at the point at which they get the opportunity to contact their prospective customer, because it’s then that they’ve got the best chance of securing the job. We also have a loyalty programme where they can receive up to 50% discount on that fee. Actually, many of our service calls from homeowners are exclusive to one tradesperson and, based on our data, 60% of them convert to paid jobs, so tradespeople can get high value jobs, with very little financial outlay.

Q What about tradespeople who might not be particularly techsavvy? Can they still get the most from the app?

Q Can you tell us some more about the success of the Spetz App in other markets around the world? A Spetz is already a global company with a growing presence here in the UK. It’s been ten years in development and over $5 million in the making, is already established in Israel and Australia, with plans to launch in the US soon, as well as recently being acquired by a publicly listed company on the Canadian Securities Exchange. Spetz has over 10,000 service providers, and over 250,000 consumer app installs. FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE SPETZ APP VISIT

Q How does the Spetz App bring tradespeople and homeowners together? And what new features is it bringing to the construction sector?

T he roofing industry is experiencing rapid change. New regulations and innovative product solutions force the sector to continuously find and adapt to new ways of working, requiring a skilled workforce. Emerging from the lockdowns of a global pandemic, the demand for construction and roofing professionals is skyrocketing, while at the same time a nationwide skills shortage requires new approaches to help develop skills of those in the industry, and new approaches to show how rewarding a career in roofing can be. The role of continuous learning and upskilling is the key to solving the skills shortage, and inspiring a new generation of roofers to join the profession is important to secure the future workforce for UK roofing. Naturally, product development and innovation require continued learning and upskilling, not just by roofers, but by everyone who works with and around roofing. And with the industry continuing to change at such a rapid pace, anyone with a stake in roofing will want to stay ahead – and learning by simply doing might not always be enough.  Positive change through continuous learning Ongoing, regular training on new products, improved methods of installation, new tools and systems can close the gap and ensure that everyone, from experienced contractors right through to apprentices, is equipped with the right skills to secure the future of UK roofing.  To empower apprentices to showcase the varied skill set a roofer needs to possess, the annual Apprentice of the Year competition held at the BMI Academy in South Cerney recognises the great potential of roofing apprentices in the UK, whilst celebrating the vital work of employers, training providers, colleges, and industry experts in investing and supporting roofing talent from the ground up. Speaking of the event and the role it plays every year in supporting the roofing industry, BMI’s Technical Training Manager Mat Woodyatt, notes that the biggest concern for the industry at present is the securing of the future

workforce of roofers. An ageing workforce, a growing skills gap, and the challenge of securing funding for roofing colleges to offer apprenticeship schemes and Level-3 qualification, all add to the complexity of making roofing not only attractive, but also accessible. “Apprentice of the Year speaks to all of these concerns by showing people that roofing is a career that can be very rewarding and offer a whole host of different opportunities,” Mat reflects. “It breaks all stereotypes around construction and roofing in general and shows that you can go beyond the tools and do so much more within roofing.”

SEPTEMBER 2022 I 31

Juniper Training student, Malachi Wilkes, of Rio Asphalt & Paving Company, won the Flat Roofing category

Competing in four different challenges over the course of two days, the finalists have to showcase their skills on a mix of practical roofing tasks and softer business challenges across individual and group tasks. All are overseen by a panel of independent judges from across the industry, but as Mat points out, they are more than judges. “What they are there for is really to raise aspirations, we deliberately choose people who are representatives of the whole roofing industry, from roofers to journalists to members of trade federations, who can inspire the finalists and offer career guidance by thinking outside the box.”

The annual Apprentice of the Year competition brings together roofing professionals from all walks of life, connecting apprentices with members of trade federations, industry press, contractors, architects, roofing colleges, and fellow roofers in both pitched and flat roofing to engage in a knowledge and skills exchange. Year on year, Mat Woodyatt, who has been working with roofing apprentices for over a decade, finds himself amazed at the level of professionalism of the finalists, as well as the growing positive reception the event receives from the roofing industry. “Taking part in Apprentice of the Year is always a transformative experience for the finalists, and every year they are really engaging with the spirit of what we are trying to do,” Mat explains. “We are looking at the joining between technical competence and personal confidence, and for apprentices to raise their aspirations and empower others to do the same.”

And breaking stereotypes is a crucial step in ensuring and empowering the next generation of roofers, as access to continued learning and accredited qualifications is not always straightforward and can create a barrier for those wanting to pursue a career in roofing. While apprenticeship schemes and places at colleges have increased, colleges are not always getting sufficient funding for roofing courses, something which impacts the route into roofing for young people. While Mat and his team are working closely with colleges and employers across the country, there is a huge discrepancy between flat and pitched roofing training opportunities – something Mat is desperate to see change in the future: “While I might be able to visit 15 or more training organisations who offer pitched roofing training, for flat it is in the single digits. I would like for the event to grow even further and for us to be able to embrace even more apprentices from the flat side.”

The BMI Academy offers continued learning and upskilling opportunities to everyone in the roofing and waterproofing industry. Through both theoretical and practical courses, BMI Academy helps to drive excellence in roofing, providing best practice support on how to use new and existing systems and solutions prior to installation. Not just for roofers, these learning and training opportunities are also available to specifiers, architects, contractors, builders, and merchants, ensuring best practice right from the start.  Empowering the future of UK roofing starts from the ground up, and it is the apprentice of today that will empower the roofer of tomorrow. Y ou know the stories: “They’re too heavy and too slow to lay. They don’t cut well. They fade too fast. There’s hardly any choice.” But nothing stands still; concrete brick technology improves. Repeating these false rumours about concrete bricks is like stating cars are dangerous because they don’t have seat belts. It might have been true once, but it’s not true anymore. In addition, believing these stories means you might miss an incredible opportunity to building more sustainably. Proof of the pudding is in the laying Marshalls conducted on-site trials using their latest concrete facing bricks. The professional bricklayers who participated said that the difference in weight between the Marshalls concrete bricks and their clay equivalent was not noticeable. In these real-world trials, observers found that productivity was in line with acceptable industry standards of 20-22 courses a day. The bricklayers who took part in the trials also found that the Marshalls bricks were easy to cut and shape using hand tools. Consistency is key Marshalls manufacturing process for facing bricks results in greater dimensional accuracy, ensuring a more consistent size and shape between individual bricks and different batches. This regularity makes laying more efficient, as maintaining levels along a course is even easier. industry to Combatingreconsider?climatechange is now at the top of everyone’s agenda. International agreements, government guidelines, and industry targets demand a more sustainable response from the built environment industry, which is widely recognised as a significant global contributor to CO2 emissions. Plus, homeowners and buyers are becoming more conscious and demanding. Excellent EPC scores are a priority, and consumer focus is now on carbon footprint and the impact of the entire build process. Net-Zero 2050 is looming on everyone’s horizon. Housebuilders are trying to achieve their sustainability goals through superior glazing, improved insulation, more efficient white goods, alternative heating technologies and LED light fittings. Larger companies are auditing the supply chain of their fixtures and fittings. But is it enough? What if considerable and immediate reductions in embedded CO2 could be made simply by your choice of bulk materials? What if a single decision could seriously accelerate your journey towards meeting the industry’s net-zero targets. Suppose you could still build a house on time and within budget – while meeting technical, aesthetic and planning requirements? If you could trust in a reliable supply of materials to be delivered to site when you expect? The question isn’t ‘Why?’ but ‘Why not?’ Concrete isn’t the problem; it’s a solution The total lifetime reduction in CO2 derived from choosing Marshalls bricks over traditional clay bricks is 49.1 per cent. How is this possible? Concrete bricks are cured, not fired in a kiln, so there is a massive reduction in heat energy and fossil fuels required throughout the process. Marshalls produces its bricks across the UK, making sure the supply as close to site as possible, so the carbon footprint of transportation is reduced. Due to the nature of their composition, Marshalls bricks continue to absorb CO2 over their lifetime. If UK housebuilders switched to Marshalls bricks for all the houses built in one year, the lifetime CO2 savings would be equivalent to taking 300,000 cars off the road or reducing transatlantic flights by 500,000 planes.

On site mixing might be the age-old method but it’s always likely to result in variations in the material. Indeed, having experienced durability issues with below DPC mortar in particular, a number of national housebuilders have now completely banned the practice from their projects.

At the same time that range is greatly extended by the manufacturer’s bespoke service, as Mike May, Sales Manager for Mortars Europe, explains: “Builders will often go to great lengths to ensure that the brickwork is in harmony with any existing structure, but will often neglect the mortar, and that’s a failing that can have a huge impact on the overall aesthetic. When you look at a wall, 20 per cent of what you’re seeing is actually the mortar, and if you don’t get the colour right in the first place it can be very difficult to subsequently rectify.”

“Not only do CEMEX M4 and M12 Coloured Mortars offer a factorycontrolled consistency, we also provide colour swatches and samples as aids to specification. Builders can also send samples and photographs from which our technical department can formulate a suitable a compatible colour, whilst a site visit can be arranged for larger developments.”Intermsofmix options there are two different bagged mortars – an M4 for bricklaying above DPC and an M12 – with a higher cement content – for below DPC. The latter is also strong enough to be With the CEMEX range of mortars you’ve got consistent performance in the bag. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to the company’s Andy Walker and Mike May about these lower carbon products.

A WHOLE BAG OF TRICKS

Mortar can have a huge influence on the overall aesthetic and correct matching in the likes of extension projects is essential

If you’re a small builder working on an extension, where you’re required to match to an existing brick build, then differences in colour can have a hugely detrimental effect on the job, and that’s why more and more builders are waking up to the benefits of a factory-produced bagged product. Add to that a huge range of colours, and a lower carbon formulation, and the appeal of CEMEX M4 and M12 Coloured Mortars quickly becomes apparent. Most popular “The Coloured Mortars range includes 12 different colours in three shades, which equates to a 38 strong portfolio,” reveals Andy Walker, Specification Manager for CEMEX UK. “Dove Holes White is the ontrend choice, which complements the greyer and lighter bricks that are presently proving popular.”

For paving slabs, the extensive collection of CEMEX solutions extends to Streetpave – a dedicated bedding mortar, where slabs can be pressed in place and, once cured, a jointing mortar applied. In addition, there’s a cementitious pointing mortar – ONPOINT – available, which is equally effective on brick slip panels.

used on roof copings, where it will resist the effects of frost attack, and in in landscaping jobs where aggressive ground-based chemicals, such as sulphates, are in evidence.

Crucially, both M4 and M12 Coloured Mortars are lower carbon solutions and offer CO2 savings of greater than 15 per cent. This is achieved by reformulating a traditional CEM1 Portland Cement with the manufacturer’s Cemstone, without any detriment to technical performance. Cemstone replaces about 15 per cent of the clinker content with limestone fines, a by-product of the hard rock quarrying industry that would otherwise go to landfill. Used as a binder in cement products, clinker is an inherently high energy and CO2 intensive material. At the same time, the remaining clinker in Cemstone is ground to a much finer consistency, all of which combines to produce a BS EN9882 compliant, 52.5N product that has the same characteristics as a high performance and high resistance CEM1, which means that the cement content in the M4 and M12 Coloured Mortars doesn’t need to be increased. “The bagged mortars are factory mixed to controlled standards,” concludes Andy, “with all the necessary additives to enhance workability included. As a result, there’s the reassurance of a consistency of colour, mix and strength – all that the builder has to do is add water in accordance with the mixing guide provided.”Thereare two sizes available – a double sleeved, 1 tonne bag, which can be resealed in order to maintain waterproofing, as well as 25kg plastic and waterproofed packs. In either case, dependable performance and appearance is assured. MORE INFORMATION ON THE CEMEX RANGE OF COLOURED MORTARS VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ039

The UK has always had a love affair with its gardens, with many simple lawned gardens transformed into stylish outdoor entertainment spaces which can be used for much of the year, not just during the height of summer. As homeowners and businesses alike are keen to make the most of their gardens and outdoor areas, Andrew Scanlon, application manager from Sika Everbuild addresses how to create welcoming gardens and outside spaces which are built on solid foundations, and the products to choose for the best possible finish.

A popular design choice is one that centres around bringing the inside out and treating gardens as an extension of the home. The idea is to create an extra room outside for homeowners to enjoy throughout the majority of the year, whether that’s a dining area, living room or even kitchen space complete with worktops and storage cupboards. This design is all about making the garden feel connected to the interior as well as creating an additional socialising space outside. It’s particularly effective where bifold doors are also installed while the addition of outdoor heaters, fire pits and pergolas help to extend use from just the summer season. Gardens are designed to reflect indoor styling and the use of porcelain tiles which complement the indoor flooring is the perfect way to achieve this. Using complementing tiling is an excellent way to create cohesion between the two areas and blur the lines between inside and outside. When installing porcelain tiles as part of an exterior landscaping project, it’s vital to only use specialist exterior grade jointing compounds. This ensures the tiles will be able to withstand the harsh elements they’ll be exposed to all year round including UV rays, heat, frost and rain as well as standing water. A porcelain tiled patio also requires a strong bonding primer in order to prevent the paving system breaking away from the mortar bed and is typically applied by brush or roller to the underside of the paving during installation. Always check the product is suitable for exterior use – SikaCeram-62 FlowFix bonding primer and jointing compound system is the ideal choice.

The last thing customers want in their outdoor dining space is moss or weeds growing in between their tiles. Using a jointing compound on a patio will act as a natural barrier to prevent unsightly weed growth in between tiles, for a lowmaintenance patio area.

But it’s worth investing time to protect any natural stone used as part of the garden design to makes sure it retains its polished, just installed look for years to come. Owing to the porosity of natural stone materials like Indian Sandstone, it’s recommended to first let the stone weather naturally over at least two seasons before sealing the stone to protect against future staining and algae growth. If customers are keen to retain the natural aesthetic of the stone as it is, then a product like Sika Stone Protector with its invisible finish will provide stain resistance without changing the appearance of the stone. Other patio sealers are formulated to protect natural stone, concrete and block paving from the effects of sunlight, water, oil, petrol, and fungal and moss growth to keep areas looking pristine through the seasons. When you’re asked not just to landscape a garden but to create an outdoor dining area, kitchen or entertaining space, it might look different to your average garden but still needs to perform in the same way as any exterior project. Sika Everbuild offers a comprehensive range of exterior landscaping products including jointing compounds and patio sealers and with products formulated to get the best out of stone, block paving, masonry and concrete. People are placing an increasing value on their outdoor areas as they look to create additional living space, but even the best patios can start to look old and tired after being exposed to the elements. A filthy patio will blight a home’s outdoor space, while the build-up of dirt, grime and stains means it can become slippery and dangerous during poor weather.

Some patios may need a second application. For removing particularly tough cement and mortar stains or stubborn limescale, you can apply the cleaner neat - be sure to only use it where needed and, again, test it in a small area before a full application. After cleaning the patio, you can Bostik provides some top tips for a perfect patio

Thoroughly cleaning a patio will transform an outdoor area, but for the best results, and to avoid any damage to a client’s exterior, you need to know how to clean the patio effectively. Whether the patio is new or old, it will also benefit from the application of a patio sealer. Properly protecting a patio will ensure the surface’s newly restored finish lasts as long as possible. Prepare the patio’s surface Start by removing any weeds from the patio area, then use a stiff brush to clear any leaves and loose surface debris, such as moss, soil and cement. Avoid using wire brushes as these may damage the patio’s surface and spoil the finish. Check that the patio is suitable for cleaning with a patio cleaner – natural stones, for example limestone, sandstone and marble, may dissolve or discolour. You should also ensure you protect areas close to the patio that could be damaged by the patio cleaner: plants, grass, metal and glass – you can easily mask them with polythene. Thoroughly wet the area to be cleaned. This will prevent the patio cleaner from soaking straight into the surface and it will work far more effectively. You don’t want to flood the patio as this will dilute the cleaner, but it should be generous enough to keep the area damp. Apply your patio cleaner Ensure you wear protective clothing, including gloves and safety glasses. Use a plastic container to mix a solution like Bostik Brick & Patio Cleaner, diluting it as two parts cleaner to one part water. Test it on a small, concealed area first and check it after 24 hours. If you’re happy with the results, you can proceed to the wholeApplyarea.the cleaner with a soft brush, carefully scrubbing it into the surface. The diluted mixture should provide coverage aroundof 6m² per litre. Rinse off the cleaner with plenty of water before it has had time to dry. This will help prevent any white discolouration developing. Avoid using a power washer as this could damage the patio’s surface.

Preparing and sealing the patio Protect any nearby windows, window frames, ponds or plants with plastic sheeting. Ensure the patio surface is clean and completely dry. Shake Bostik Pave Seal well before use, then test it on a small inconspicuous area and check after 24 hours to ensure there are no unwanted changes in appearance. To apply the sealer, use a soft brush, roller or spray to apply it evenly. A soft brush is best to enable you to work the patio sealer into the surface. Don’t allow it to pool. Depending on how porous the surface is, Bostik Pave Seal will provide coverage of around 5m² to 8m² per litre per coat. Leave the patio sealer for two to three hours, then apply a second coat. A third coat may be needed on very porous surfaces. Leave the sealer to dry completely. This will be approximately four hours for foot traffic and 24 hours for vehicles. You will need to protect the freshly applied patio sealer from rain and frost until it is dry and should clean any tools used with white spirit immediately after use. By effectively cleaning and protecting a patio you will produce a polished outdoor area that clients can value every single day for years to come.

protect it from future staining and grime with a good quality patio sealer. This will provide protection from the elements, enhance and preserve the colour, safeguard against oil and grease staining, and help prevent the development of dirt, moss and algae. You must have thoroughly cleaned the patio first: once you have applied the sealer it cannot be removed and anything left on the patio will be sealed in. When to seal a patio You must apply your patio sealer to porous external paving in dry weather. If you are sealing a new patio, you should wait at least a month after it has been laid or you risk trapping efflorescence on the slabs. While efflorescence is a natural chemical reaction, its white-ish discolouration can ruin the patio’s appearance.

C oncrete floors are tough, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t get especiallydamaged, astheyget older. As well as looking unsightly, damage such as holes in a garage floor, on pathways and patios or even on concrete flooring inside a property can cause a serious trip hazard if left untreated. Tackling problems such as holes and cracks quickly can prevent the damage from getting worse, overcome tricky repairs and prolong the life of the floor. When it comes to a quick, long-lasting repair, reinforced cement based powders that can be easily mixed and then poured into the damaged areas are an ideal solution. Conventional cement and waterbased repair materials can be applied; however, these shrink slightly as the repair dries and the water evaporates, causing them to pull away slightly from the substrate. This weakens the bond of the repair and over time this can lead to your customer’s concrete floor requiring additional repair work. In this step-by-step guide, we will show you how you can carry out concrete floor repairs quickly and easily by using a pourable mortar filler such as Watco Flowpatch.

Step 2 –Mixing Once you’ve fully prepared the area, it’s time to tackle the damage. You will need a mixing blade, or a mixer fitted into a low speed drill for large repair areas, gloves, goggles, a steel float and clean water. Portable mortar fillers can have a short working life so it’s advisable to mix the product near the area you’re going to repair, rather than near the water source.Mixthe Flowpatch repair mortar with water in the bucket. Be careful when adding the water as too much will extend the drying time and weaken the repair. To achieve the right consistency, keep to the ratio of 3 parts Flowpatch to 1 part water. Gradually add the powder, stirring constantly as you do so until you have a smooth, pourable slurry. You can store any remaining powder for future use.

Step 1 –Preparation Thorough preparation is essential if you want to provide your customer with a professional, long-lasting repair, so start by sweeping out any debris and loose material from the damaged area. Use a wire brush to remove loose pieces of concrete and to make sure the hole and its edges are free from oil or other heavy stains. If the concrete floor is dirty or oily, use an industrial degreaser to remove the contaminant. These can be applied either diluted or undiluted, depending on the level of contamination, brushed in with a stiff broom and then left for around 15 minutes so that it can penetrate and then lift the stain out of the surface. Next, scrub the floor again with a stiff brush to loosen the dirt or oil and then rinse with clean, cold water. User Guide

Flowpatch is selflevelling so it needs minimal trowelling. It really is just a case of mix, pour and then trowel for a professional finish. Once applied, the area will be ready for foot traffic in just 30 minutes and heavier traffic such as cars in around 2 hours.

Spot the difference There are several ways to know how to spot the difference between an unproven, unbranded version and a reliable branded version of an EPDM product. Suppliers should provide a BBA certificate to ensure the correct

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER SEPTEMBER 2022 I 55

BRAND AID Adrian Buttress, managing director of PermaRoof discusses unbranded EPDM products and how to avoid them.

Unbranded EPDM products can be a risk to waterproofing and experience the damaging effects of weathering as the products have not always undergone rigorous testing like their branded counterparts. In some cases, unbranded products do not offer certifications guaranteeing performance either; this means customers can’t be assured that their roof will last for 15, let alone 50 years. Added to the lack of reliability, which is a particular concern in winter, many unbranded EPDM products do not offer reliable warranties or aftercare to prove the quality that they advertise. This means that while products appear cheaper upfront if the product fails, it can be an expensive mistake when tracing the company responsible, which is often impossible. This can cost installers, and their customers, time and money, not to mention additional stress. Using an unbranded EPDM product can not only cause damage to a roof but will damage the customer’s pocket and the reputation of the roofing contractor –as they are left with the burden of paying to rectify it.

One of the most effective ways to be certain a roof is winterproof – and to prevent issues arising later – is to ensure it is installed correctly and with high quality materials. A current challenge affecting the sector is the rise in unbranded EPDM products. Whilst they might at first seem like an appealing, cost-effective alternative to recognisable brands, the lack of certification and required guarantee that comes with these unbranded products is failing installers and their customers. Currently, the sector is experiencing a marked increase in unbranded EPDM products being used instead of proven and tested equivalents. This is in part linked to the ongoing stock shortages caused by Brexit, exacerbated by Covid19, and the decline in lorry driver numbers able to transport the available products. With limited access to products, installers and therefore, customers are turning to lower quality versions, leaving them to fall at the first hurdle. Keeping in mind the additional challenges that the cold weather and frost can bring, it’s vitally important to check the chosen products have the right performance, traceability and manufacturer backing to provide the confidence they can withstand the weather.

What’s the damage?

EPDM synthetic rubber is used as a membrane for flat roofs and provides a high-quality and durable waterproof solution, with an expected lifespan of more than 50 years. construction product certificate is in place, and this will also track accountability. Furthermore, to guarantee longevity, products should include a declaration of performance to outline their expected life expectancy and waterproofness, as well as an environmental product declaration to make sure it adheres to environmental standards.Otherconsiderations to be aware of in high quality EPDM products, such as Firestone RubberCover, is the standard of its manufacture. A reliable EPDM should be ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standard, meaning it meets customer needs within statutoryKnowingrequirements.thedifference between good and bad quality products is often down to knowing to look for the right guarantees and warranties, but also asking for confirmation from suppliers. Any reputable supplier or merchant should have the right knowledge and information on certifications and standards and be willing and able to share this with customers. Taking the next steps While installing the right products in the first instance is always the best option, there are ways to get poor quality roofing projects rectified and up to standard ahead of Professionalswinter. who are faced with reviewing the status of a poor roof should suggest a full system solution. This could involve a liquid-applied waterproof layer, a full refit or a completely bespoke solution. Once the solution is agreed, selecting the right high-quality materials is a must. Good installers will have reputable qualifications and have completed regular CPD courses to ensure their knowledge is up to date. PermaRoof, has developed the PermaRoof Registered Installer (PRI) scheme to help reassure customers of credentials. Through this scheme contractors are provided with training, which is levelled dependant on the course they’ve taken and previous experience, and a card to prove their credentials as part of the specification process. Ensuring roofing work is completed to meet top standards, with the most reliable products available does not have to be complex. Remember to take no chances and choose the right product with the right credentials, which can make all the difference and will ensure the project is futureproofed.

Martin Hipkin, DEKS Business Development Manager, discusses the features and benefits of lead replacement flashings versus traditional lead on various types of installations

roofing, flooring & insulation 58 I SEPTEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

You only have to take a cursory glance at the numerous grandiose older buildings in your local town or city to see how extensive the use of lead has been over the centuries as a durable roof flashing. In more recent times, however, it has come to be regarded by many as a product which is no longer wholly appropriate for a more safety conscious, environmentally aware society. Even its biggest advocates would have to agree that using lead is time consuming, cumbersome and requires high levels of skill to install. Working at height, it also makes increasing sense for the ideal roof flashing to be lightweight, and easy to manoeuvre. It also needs to be easy to cut and form, applied directly from the roll with minimal waste and without the requirement of being prefabricated and lifted into place. At the same time there should be no need for welding at the joints or elaborate fixings or bending devices. The best solution is always non-toxic and, therefore, more environmentally friendly. Lead replacement flashings should also be attractive enough to sit comfortably next to the existing lead, which may have been in place for decades. As we all know lead has a significant scrap value and, despite futile efforts to stop the illegal scrap trade, there continues to be a massive escalation in lead being ripped off roofs and stolen for scrap. One of the biggest problems with the theft of lead from roofs is the damage that can then be caused by water ingress, leading to expensive repairs, worry and stress and increased insurance premiums.

Taking all those factors into account it is easy to make a strong case for our own solution

Customer feedback indicates that using FastFlash almost pays for itself on the installation efficiency alone. Material advantages

Our product is a stretchable matrix of recycled aluminium, embedded in eco-friendly polymer rubbers with a fully selfadhesive butyl backing. Like a traditional lead flashing, it can be chased into masonry and will adhere to most conventional building materials – plastics, zinc, copper, steel, brick and concrete – with only minimal priming required for porous or dusty surfaces. It also does not need any pagination oil applied with the extra cost in labour and materials. Those who regularly lift lead know how surprisingly heavy it is, which is a potential hazard on any sloping roof. FastFlash is five times lighter than Code 4 lead. And, unlike lead, it isn’t a potentially toxic product. It rarely needs heat or flame for installation, which reduces the risk of possible roof fires due to naked flames.

only provide a better outcome, but won’t get stolen because it is stuck hard and fast to the building.

For projects – like flashing a chimney – it’s simply a case of cutting each length of flashing, instantly bond butyl to butyl faces, pinch, roll and flatten easily with a soft dressing hammer or finger tips and create a flexible watertight bond at the joint that looks professional.Inuseitstays where you manipulate it, with no memory to want to return to its original shape and, while lead has to be lapped every 1.5 metres to allow room for expansion, it’s possible to use an entire roll of flexible flashing up to 5m with no lapping, cutting installation time significantly with less waste, thereby saving money. Importantly, lead replacement flashings are also not as vulnerable to the price fluctuations associated with lead, so you can be assured when you quote for a job you will not be out of pocket. Boxed for easy transportation, and to minimise damage on the move, the product range comes in Black, Light Grey (Old Lead) and Anthracite (New Lead) – allowing flashings to blend in even on listed buildings.

Easy and fast installations

Q Did you find the material easy to work with? MK It’s really easy to work with; doesn’t crumble and no splinters!

STERLING

Q Where has the product been used, for what purpose and how much was specified? MK SterlingOSB Zero has been used throughout the building for external and interior walls and roofs.

STUFF

Q What does the project comprise of and where is it located? Mike Keen (MK) The building was originally an old Colt house built in 1949, a Cedar shingled (walls and roof), threebed single storey house with an all-timber frame on a float, with two brick fireplaces and chimneys. It had been empty for two years before we took it on and was uninhabitable. Water damage had rotted most of the chipboard walls. It sits in 1.5 acres, surrounded by fields in rural Suffolk. We added a small extension to take it to four bedrooms and totally reconfigured the living spaces. The flat roof became a pitched roof and the whole building is now vaulted. We had to replace the entire frame, incorporating some elements of the existing frame into the much-beefed-up new frame, so we remained under Building Control regulations as the extension came under permissible development. The roof is now slate with larch cladding while most of the southernfacing roof is covered with an in-roof solar system providing 6kW. We have five Fakro roof windows on the non-solar aspects and use rainwater harvest tanks to provide water for the garden while an air source heat pump drives the underfloor heating. We have no hot water system – two electric showers and an ondemand hot tap in the kitchen provide the hot water.

Q Why did you choose West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero product for this project?MK We wanted the project to be as ecofriendly and sustainable as possible. SterlingOSB Zero was the obvious choice; being made in the UK was a plus for us so we cut travel costs. Zero-added formaldehyde is also a big plus; with it being in so many everyday items, reducing the amount of chemicals surrounding the family was really important. Our carpenters also prefer working with it as it is smooth and easy to use while also providing an excellent rigidity to the frame.

Q What do you like about the products selected? Do you regularly use these products? MK It’s the first time that I’ve used the products and I’d definitely use them again. We have a second phase build planned for next year where we will convert a 25m pigsty into a kitchen and photography studio – so we’ll be using SterlingOSB Zero again.

■ Along with its many practical attributes, the Sterling OSB Zero range has strong environmental credentials. All West Fraser panel products produced in the UK are net carbon negative and manufactured in mills that have obtained the coveted environmental ISO 14001 accreditation. Responsibly sourced, the panels are made from locally grown timber, cutting embodied carbon from transportation. Sterling OSB Zero is also the first OSB product to be made in the UK with zero added formaldehyde, ensuring an even ‘greener’ board that meets all standards with ease.

THE REGULATIONANSWER

It’s almost five years since the disastrous fire at Grenfell Tower. From an isolated blaze in a single flat, the flames quickly spread to the rest of the 24-storey building, killing 72 people and leaving a further 70 with severe injuries. The incident had a deep and immediate impact on the popular consciousness, and is likely to be one of those moments we all remember forever –not just because of the terrible death toll, but because all that suffering could and should have been prevented. It’s also affected virtually everyone in the construction trade in one way or another. Grenfell happened because attitudes to safety were lax – and in its wake, the sector has come under huge pressure to improve. The Hackitt report – led by Dame Judith Hackitt, ex-Chair of the Health and Safety Executive – examined its conduct and resulted in a lengthy list of recommendations for how it could improve. She criticised a: “cultural issue across the sector, which can be described as a ‘race to the bottom’ caused either through ignorance, indifference, or because the system does not facilitate good practice. There is insufficient focus on delivering the best quality building possible, in order to ensure that residents are safe, and feel safe”. The government went on to ban combustible materials above 18 metres on residential buildings. Key fire regulations So, what standards do products have to pass to be used above 18 metres? There are several, but one of the most important is BS EN 13501-1. To pass it, products are put through up to five tests, which assess their performance when it comes to combustibility, how likely they are to produce smoke, and help a fire spread. Once the test is complete, the products are given three different ratings – one representing how combustible a product is (A1 to F), one how much smoke it would produce (s1, s2 or s3), and one representing how many flaming particles or droplets it would produce (d0 to d2). Non-combustible – the best choice However, it’s important to note that these rules don’t apply to all products. With fire safety in the spotlight more than ever in recent years, it’s only natural that more and more prospective customers are asking us what changing regulations mean for the installation of slate roofs. But our slate and phyllite products are unaffected, because those materials have been repeatedly proven to be noncombustible. Approved Document B of the Building Regulations states: “roof covering products (and/or materials) defined in Commission Decision 2000/553/EC of 6 September 2000, implementing Council Directive 89/106/EEC, can be considered to fulfil all of the requirements for the performance characteristic ‘external fire performance’ without the need for testing”. Despite the UK’s departure from the European Union, the particular EU Directive referred to above is still in force –and it lists natural slate as one of the materials exempt from testing due to its long-established outstanding fire performance. All SSQ’s natural slate can therefore be used wherever noncombustible roofing products are required.

Richard Cook of SSQ looks at changing fire regulations in the wake of Grenfell – and why natural slate is an outstanding non-combustible choice.

The solution is suitable for use over both absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors, including sand/cement and concrete screeds, as well as granolithic, terrazzo, epoxy and polyurethane resins, ceramic and quarry tiles. In addition, the fibre reinforcement provides a level of flexibility that makes it suitable for use over plywood subfloors.

Conventional levelling compounds subjected to slight flexing encountered in flexible subfloors will crack and break up over time and repeated use. Even when flooring grade plywood is firmly screwfixed to a suspended floor in line with the recommended British Standards, it will still encounter minor movement when walked on. As such, the product can be used throughout the entire floor of a property, providing a uniform, unbroken subfloor finish that offers the perfect base for the installation of floor coverings, optimising their aesthetic appearance and the longterm performance of the floor. This is particularly beneficial in modern, open plan homes, where the same flooring can run throughout the entire floor plan of aTheproperty.levelling compound can also be used to encapsulate mesh-mounted wire

underfloor heating systems installed over both screeds and well-fixed timber (plywood) subfloors. Moisture menace Before installing any levelling compound and the subsequent floor covering, it is essential to check for the presence of moisture in the subfloor screed. Subfloor moisture is the biggest cause of flooring installation failures bar none. It is particularly an issue for floor coverings that are adhered to the subfloor, such as increasingly popular luxury vinyl tiles, as well as wooden flooring. Moisture in a subfloor will naturally rise to the surface, where, if it is unable to escape, will condense and collect under the installed floor covering. This moisture will attack the adhesive used to secure the flooring to the subfloor, causing vinyl sheet to blister and tiles to lift, and result in wood floors warping. In older buildings, excess subfloor moisture is typically caused by the absence of a structural damp proof course (these only became mandatory in

S etcrete High Performance floor levelling compound is the perfect option for smoothing screeds in high solar gain areas, such as conservatories, prior to the installation of a floor covering. Such locations are subjected to sudden and wide fluctuations in temperature and require a levelling compound that can withstand the stresses and strains caused by the material’s desire to expand and contract in response to temperature changes.Thelevelling compound utilises a fibrereinforced cement formulation, with the tiny fibres performing a similar function to steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete. As such, the levelling compound will retain its integrity throughout the sudden and rapid warming and cooling cycles encountered in a conservatory or other heavily glazed areas, including school and hospital corridors and contemporary kitchens featuring bifold doors.

66 I SEPTEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER buildings in the 1960s) or, if a damp proof course was installed, it may have become damaged over time. In new buildings or extensions, excess moisture is normally the result of residual construction moisture in a recently installed screed. As concrete typically dries at a rate of around one day per millimetre of screed (for the first 50mm and then 1mm every other day beyond this), a 150mm deep screed would be expected to take well over six months to dry out sufficiently for a floor covering to be safely Fortunately, installed.there is a ready-made solution to the problem, which is to apply a liquid epoxy resin damp proof membrane to the subfloor before installing the levelling compound and floor covering. Because this is an additional process and cost, it’s tempting to try and cut corners, especially if the subfloor ‘feels’ dry. But it’s not worth the risk, as remedial work, entailing the complete removal and reinstallation of the flooring, will be very expensive. Test and treat Subfloor moisture cannot be detected visually or by touch or smell. Easy-to-use, handheld moisture meters are available to give an instant reading of the presence or absence of moisture. However, to determine the precise moisture level, a digital hygrometer should be used at different points across a floor. These need to be taped to the floor and left overnight to reach a state of equilibrium. Efficut saw blades

FIRST IN A NEW SERIES

The Makita Efficut range of saw blades – for both wood and metal – has been specifically engineered to improve the efficiency of the cutting action of a circular saw. The design of each tooth helps to deliver excellent cutting performance. A thinner blade and a specially designed tooth profile produces less resistance during operation. The scalloped front face on each tooth provides improved performance to clear waste material from the blade. Finally, the sharp, bevelled angle tip enables a fine cut with only minimal effort. This combination of features accelerates the cutting speed and minimises energy usage to enable more cuts between charges. In fact, the blades make cuts 2.4 times faster than conventional saw blades. They also allow for 2.4 times more cuts per battery charge when cutting wood and 1.6 times more cuts per battery charge when cutting metal, compared to the standard equivalent. In addition, choosing versatile Tungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) multipurpose saw blades can make working with different materials easier, as the blades can cut a range of materials including aluminium, MDF, PVC and laminated chipboard. To make the most of these efficiencies, tradespeople should look for tools, such as Makita’s DHS680 18V LXT Circular Saw, with brushless technology and Efficut blades. SUCCESS

Ensuring the completion of each task on site is as quick and easy as possible is an important consideration. Small efficiency improvements can quickly add up and allow jobs to be finished quicker, benefiting both the tradesperson and the customer. Minimising interruptions is one of the reasons why professionals invest in cordless tools with high-quality, highperformance battery systems. However, there are other ways that efficiency gains can be made. Brushless technology As any tradesperson will know, choosing the right tools is essential. For improved efficiency, professionals should look for machines that feature brushless motor technology. In this type of motor, the tool is driven using contact-free electromagnetism rather than relying on contact between the carbon brushes and a rotary electrical switch on the rotor. When a tool with a brushless motor is activated, the onboard electronic circuit sends electric currents to convert the copper coils within the motor into electromagnets. This creates north and south magnetic poles that attract and repel the permanent magnets on the rotor shaft to rotate it continuously. While motors with brushes are effective, the contact causes friction that generates heat and wastes energy. It also causes wear of the brushes, which must periodically be throughoutreplacedthe life of the tool. A contactfree, brushless motor eliminates these issues and is therefore more efficient. A brushless motor can also produce more torque per weight, meaning less power is needed to achieve the same results. In fact, choosing a tool with a brushless motor can extend run times by up to 50 per cent per battery charge. This means greater productivity and fewer recharges throughout a job.

Makita UK looks at how the combination of brushless motor technology and specially designed high efficiency blades can help extend the run times of cordless circular saws

Bags of benefits ToughBuilt has also recently extended its inter-connectable ClipTech range which allows trade professionals to work smarter than ever before. “The range now features over 50 products. It consists of heavy-duty tool bags, pouches, totes, belts and accessories and offers enormous flexibility. Again, the purpose of ClipTech is to save time on the jobsite by encouraging customisation in how a professional carries their tools and equipment.“Thereare dozens of different styles and sizes of pouch, each designed for a specific trade, job or task, and each can be attached to any belt, as well as carried with our Hard Body Tool Bags or hung on a Wall Organiser,” says Matt. “Central to the ability to tailor loads and layouts in seconds is our unique ClipTech Hub. These hubs can be used to attach ClipTech products virtually anywhere with the complete peace of mind of knowing that, once attached, the item will stay securely in place.” He continues: “By enabling the trade professional to carry only what they need when they need it and to have everything they need for a specific task within immediate reach, the system reduces trips to the van, therefore boosting efficiency and productivity.” Specifically ToughBuilt has added two new Hard Body Massive Mouth Tool Bags – a Medium and XL version of the zip-up, soft carry-handle variety. Both feature the patented Massive Mouth opening which opens wider than other tool bags on the market, ensuring better visibility of and accessibility to the bag’s contents. Let’s start with the OX Pro Tuff Levels; 600mm/24” and 1,200mm/48”. Everyone knows that sinking feeling when someone drops your level but the chunky box design makes these robust but surprisingly light in weight. The fairly simple design – with minimal holes and no handles – makes them low maintenance and easy to clean, which will be welcome in the wet trades. There are rubber bumpers that act as shock absorbers on the ends and around the vials for extra protection. The latter reduces the chances of the vials cracking if it did drop. OX has also done a cracking job with a vial that’s easy to read, even in poor light conditions, thanks to the greenish liquid. An incredible precision of 0.5mm/m accuracy means you can’t blame your tools for something being on the slant. OX has so much confidence in its engineering the company has backed it with a lifetime vial warranty. BUILDER

STRONG AS AN OX OX Tools has become a very popular brand on site, and you know it’s OX from the vibrant blue colour. There’s also a bright range of products, and I got the chance to try out a few, but particularly wanted to talk about the company’s level, rafter square and chalk reel. Last but certainly not least is the new OX Rafter Square. Again, an aluminium construction makes them light and robust, whilst the colour highlights the etched markings, making it an easy read. Roof construction is all about angles and OX has covered every angle when it comes to cutting the common rafters, hips, and valleys. This kind of work is right up my alley, and all the readings are in metric. In fact, this tool is not just for roof work, because it can also be used on a day-to-day basis as a square – whether it’s marking simple 90 degrees or complex angles or using it as a guide with a circular saw. In the latter application there’s a wide base that helps you hold it securely in place ensuring straight cuts every time. With notches for marking 5mm increments, it can even be used as a combination square to mark scribe lines. The OX Rafter Squares come in two sizes, 180mm/7” and 300mm/12”, which makes them versatile when working with small or large timber.

PROFESSIONAL

Next up was the OX Pro Chalk Line. Its aluminium construction makes it light yet sturdy. It’s relatively small, which makes it easy to handle, but inside there’s 30metres of Kevlar line coiled up. Kevlar is a durable material, first used commercially as a replacement for steel in racing tyres, and won’t snap if it snags on something sharp. To put it into perspective, it’s 20x stronger than previous models. It has a 6-to-1 gear ratio, which means it’s very quick to rewind. It’s space saving too as the handle sits flush to avoid getting caught on other tools when in the tool bag. The hook, which is probably one of the most important parts of the chalk reel, has a strong grip to ensure it doesn’t move when pinging the line. OX also provides a range of chalk colours depending on what material you’re wanting to use it on.

■ An essential companion to the Hedgehog Gutter Brush is the Hedgehog GutterClip, which keeps the former securely in place in gutters regardless of how challenging the environment. That includes low hanging, flat roofed, gutters with no tile nose overhanging, and those located in high wind areas. These handy clips are sold in packs of 20, and manufactured in a clear UV resistant plastic.

Give blocked gutters and drains the brush off with a nononsense solution from HEDGEHOG GUTTER BRUSH VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ086

There’s an old saying that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and if a product can liberate us from one of life’s less agreeable tasks then it certainly holds true. Cleaning gutters is hardly a job that anyone relishes but, with the prospect of a blockage causing damaging water overflow, it is equally something that can’t be ignored. Thankfully, an uncomplicated, effective and easy to install device promises to keep them clear for years. The awardwinning, British made, Hedgehog Gutter Brush has been designed to prevent leaves clogging gutters and drains. It’s hard wearing, easy to fit and comes with a 10-year guarantee. Nor do you need pricey gutter cleaning tools – you just fit the brush into the gutter and let it work for There’syou. no specialist knowledge needed to install a Hedgehog Gutter Brush. Once fitted into a clean system, leaf clogged gutters and drains become a thing of the past, although the manufacturer recommends cleaning every couple of years in areas where dense deciduous trees are in evidence. It should also be noted that – as with any gutter guard – the Hedgehog Gutter Brush will not prevent silt build up in guttering or the growth of vegetation resulting from drifting seeds. So just how does it work? A stainlesssteel wire core and polypropylene bristles come together to create a durable and long-lasting brush that the manufacturer promises to be virtually indestructible. In addition, with standard dimensions of 4mx100mm, it’s suitable for 95 per cent of household gutters. Brushes are also available in dimensions of 50mm, suitable for most greenhouse gutters, to 200mm for use in commercial gutters. The 100mm & 125mm brushes come in a choice of black, white or brown. When it comes to the fitting you’ll quickly find the brush will do the work for you. It automatically adapts to the shape of any gutter in minutes, whilst it can be easily cleaned if necessary. The same product can also be made use of as a pathway drain brush.

Q What should I do if I think I’ve been a victim of van cloning? Report it to the police and the DVLA. A marker will be added to the Police National Computer and the police will stop any vehicle that displays a duplicate number plate. You should also notify the DVLA – they may issue your van with a replacement number plate.

ATTACK OF THE CLONES

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER SEPTEMBER 2022 I 79 builders’ vehicles

Honest John Vans is the website that champions fairness for van owners by publishing expert, unbiased information to help builders make informed choices about their vehicles.

If you have a police incident number or a crime reference then make sure you include this as part of the formal appeal. Sometimes the cloned vehicle will not match the colour or make/model of the vehicle that has been cloned. Likewise, if you have evidence that you were in a different part of the country then include this as part of your appeal.  If your formal challenge is rejected you will have another 28 days to either pay the PCN or appeal to an independent tribunal. It is free to take your case to an independent tribunal.

A growing number of builders are being targeted by criminals in a new UK crime wave that’s sweeping vast parts of London. Van and pick-up drivers are being hit with unfair penalty charge notices (PCNs) for offences they did not commit due to a new wave of vehicle cloning, according to new official data.  Vehicle cloning can take various forms with a criminal either physically stealing the number plate or having a fake plate illegally made to put on another van. Cloned number plates are typically used on vehicles that are stolen, unroadworthy or used in illegal activity.  The latest Transport for London (TfL) data for the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has revealed a huge rise in the number of vehicle cloning cases, with criminals using fake identities to rack up huge fines and drive in the capital’s clean air zone without paying the daily fee.  In April 2022, the number of PCNs being cancelled was 857 per cent higher than in the same month in 2021. And there has been a 631 per cent increase in PCNs being overturned due to cloning since the ULEZ was expanded in October 2021. A van driver with a ULEZ PCN will typically be hit with a £160 fine by TfL, which will be reduced to £80 paid within 14 days. Vehicle cloning is part of a wider increase in vehicle crime. In England and Wales, there has been a 7 per cent rise in vehicle theft, with one area reporting a 37 per cent spike since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.  In the event of a PCN being issued due to a cloned van, the legitimate registered keeper will need to provide evidence to prove their van or pick-up was not at the time and place where the alleged offence occurred.

Q How can I appeal a parking ticket or penalty charge if my vehicle has been cloned?  Do not pay. Instead, appeal the penalty charge notice as detailed on the back of the ticket. You usually get 28 days to appeal and should explain why you are not responsible for the fine, whilst providing any evidence you have to back up your claim.

Adrian Barraclough runs Quickslide, one of Britain’s leading window & door manufacturers.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON QUICKSLIDE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAJ088

When it comes to measuring and fitting PVC-U windows, they’re all the same, right? Well actually, they are not.

Quickslide is especially known for pioneering authentic-lookingaffordable,vertical sliding, box sash windows. They are more complex to design and manufacture due to the style of the window; specialist hardware is required to make them work; and the way that they are installed requires care and attention. Though nothing that you need to attend evening classes to learn! The problem is that whilst the special touches required are pretty straightforward, not observing them can result in serious problems and quite disproportionate to the care needed.Crucially, not many people know that. And such is the problem with VS call-outs that earlier this year, Quickslide set about reducing the most common mistakes made by training customers to understand the difference. The results have been spectacular: from up to 80 call outs a month we got it down to 30, a figure that is improving all the time. But what exactly are the differences? These are the key points that our engineers have been talking to our customersTransportabout:andcarry them upright! One of the biggest issues we have is the way that VS frames are transported, and carried around on site. Quite simply, carrying VS windows on their side can result in the springs in the counterbalances being dislodged. Which means the windows simply will not open or close properly, if at all. Carry them on their vertical plane – upright if you will – and you will never have that Removeproblem.thesashes when installing! Don’t install VS frames, especially larger windows, without removing the sashes first. All windows come with quick release tilt arms for the benefit of the installer. Don’t risk your health and don’t risk breaking the window: Take ‘em out! Lift the lift hooks! An amazing number of fitters screw the lift hooks into place without thinking it through, resulting in the hooks being fitted too close to the bottom rail. Refitting them leaves ugly holes in the frame, which will generally leave Mrs Jones a tad upset in my experience. If you’re not sure, refer to the ‘where do I fit the lift hooks?’ In the FAQs on our website. Careful with the packers but don’t skip them! Over-packing the frame before foaming can result in the sashes being tight in their rails and difficult to tilt and slide, which is after all a key feature of VS windows. My Top Tip: Use a couple of packers on both sides and in either corner on the bottom. Also, temporarily fit packers between the sash and frame and check that the sash tilts and slides freely, before finally foaming. Follow these simple rules and you will never have a problem!

DOCUMENTGUIDEROCKWOOLTOAPPROVEDL

Following on2021DocumentApprovedL(England)comingintoforce15June2022, Rockwool has created an easy-to-digest guide to the revised Building Regulations. The publication gives U-value requirements with a handy side-by-side comparison against the 2013 edition and suggests possible substrate constructions using stone wool insulation.

One of the big news stories of the year has been rising energy prices. The cost of domestic gas, oil and electricity has rocketed, and is already double or treble what it was this time last year. So there is a big clamour for British homes to be better insulated, so that we need less energy to heat them in winter.

PROFISCHERAPP

Some campaigners have been gluing themselves to motorways in an attempt to force Her GovernmentMajesty’stoinsulate homes for free. Professional Builder readers will no doubt have their own views on the legitimacy of these tactics! Also, improving the energy efficiency of older buildings is not quite as simple as the campaigners would have us believe. Whacking in a few slabs of insulation board can create problems that weren’t there before – chiefly by trapping moisture behind them.Furthermore, there is some question over whether insulating older, solid-walled homes has quite the benefit that campaigners claim. The gold standard of heat-loss calculations has always been the “U value” – measured in Watts per Square Meter per Degree C. Every building material has its U value, which is recorded in tables and websites, and in the manufacturers’ sales brochures.Soifyou are building a cavity wall, say, then you combine the published U values of the brickwork, the cavity insulation, the blockwork, the drylining, the plaster skim, and you come up with a magic number that you hope will satisfy the latest version of the Building Regulations. It goes without saying that older houses, built with solid brickwork, and without the benefit of modern insulation materials, are assumed to have much higher U values, and will therefore lose more precious heat (U values are like golf scores –the lower the better). But the problem with U values is that they are largely theoretical. When the actual heat loss through a real wall, in a real lived-in house, is physically measured, it can turn out to be rather different from the calculations.scientists’TheSociety for the Protection of Ancient Buildings has found that the heat losses through some solid masonry walls might be only half as much as estimated by the U value calculations. And the most significant factor is making sure the wall stays dry. (Air trapped in materials is good, while moisture trapped in materials is bad). Hence the problem with sticking modern insulation onto solid walls. Whether it’s internal or external, it can trap moisture and encourage the loss of Remember, heat. draughtproofing doors and windows is still the single most costeffective thing you can do to stop heat loss, and upgrading loft insulation is also essential. But thoughtlessly insulating older solid walls might actually cause more harm than good, whatever the loony protesters say. This story still has some way to run.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT DIVERTICULAR DISEASE THE NHS WEBSITE

THIS MONTH, GP, ALICE FITZGIBBON, LOOKS AT A BOWEL CONDITION CALLED DIVERTICULOSIS AND DIVERTICULAR DISEASE, WHICH IS CLOSELY RELATED.

In this condition, the large bowel, which normally is like a smooth tube, develops small out pouches in its lining. These pouches are called diverticulae and the condition is called diverticulosis when it has no symptoms. Diverticulosis is very common. It happens in most people’s bowels as we get older. Not eating enough fibre, being constipated, being overweight and smoking are all implicated in the out pouches developing. Having a family history of the condition also increases the chances of developing it. Many people are unaware they have diverticulosis as it may cause no problems at all. The condition is often noticed when people are having tests or scans for other reasons. So,when does diverticulosis cause a problem? In some people with diverticulosis, digested food material can get stuck in the out pouches when it is working its way through the bowel. This can cause irritation to the lining of the bowel and lead to symptoms, such as lower left sided abdominal pain that comes and goes, or constipation and diarrhoea. When you have symptoms like this it is called diverticular disease. Sometimes, the diverticulae can become inflamed and infected. If this happens it is called diverticulitis. When this happens, symptoms can include constant abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea, bleeding from the back passage and a high temperature. Diverticulitis can make some people very unwell. You might recognise that some of the symptoms of diverticular disease and diverticulitis overlap with symptoms of bowel cancer. If you have any abdominal pain, change in bowel habit or bleeding from the back passage you should seek a medical opinion. Your GP will be able to examine you and arrange further tests to find out what is going on. Often, diverticular disease is discovered during a camera test to look at the bowel in more detail (a colonoscopy). This might be arranged to see where any bleeding is coming from. Diverticulae can also be seen on CT scans and sometimes a specialist CT scan called CT colonography is required. Diverticular disease can be managed effectively with lifestyle changes. Increasing dietary fibre, or taking a fibre based supplement can help bulk up food waste and create larger stools (poos) that are easier to pass. This means there is less pressure and straining when you go to the toilet and the muscles in the bowel wall do not need to work as hard. Good sources of fibre in the diet include fresh and dried fruit and vegetables, nuts, cereals, beans and pulses. Drinking plenty of water is important with a high fibre diet.

Because non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and aspirin can upset the stomach, they are not recommended in this condition. Using a bulk forming laxative, like fybogel, can help ensure constipation does not occur.

Let’s talk about DIVERTICULAR DISEASE...

Medication can be used to help manage pain from diverticular disease. Simple painkillers like paracetamol are recommended.

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER SEPTEMBER 2022 I 83 GOOD HEALTH NO. 35 DIVERTICULAR DISEASE

If diverticulitis develops people can become very unwell. Antibiotics are needed to help treat infection. Complications of diverticulitis can include abscess formation in the bowel or even a small hole forming in the bowel wall (known as a perforation). In these cases, an operation may be required. So, diverticular disease is very common. You might have it and not know about it. It is always best to have any symptoms like abdominal pain, change in bowel habit or bleeding from the back passage checked out and investigated, so please contact your GP if needed.
