A JOB WELL DONE
During the pandemic Professional Builder reported on just some of the unsolicited acts of kindness that tradespeople undertook for their clients. It revealed that the best builders are able to develop a rapport with their customers that goes beyond a commercial relationship. For a homeowner, allowing anyone into their property to undertake repair, maintenance, and improvement projects is an emotive experience. The bigger and more disruptive the job, the more the anxiety levels ramp up.
Builders know that they need to reassure the property owner, minimise disruption and maintain lines of communication at all times. That’s a reality which is underscored by a new ‘Customer Service Report’, by WhatsApp business communications specialist Esendex. It analysed Trustpilot review data to give each industry a weighted index score out of 100, factoring in overall review scores and average sentiment ratings for customer service terms. The results proved that construction was one of the top two industries.
One of the most satisfying parts of our job is to visit our readers on site. The projects are as impressive as the skill levels on display and that’s backed up by consideration for the client and their neighbours. Tradespeople now routinely leverage technology like WhatsApp to keep all parties informed, or via project management solutions that are equipped with a direct line to the customer. The logistics of the job are planned to ensure consideration for neighbours, with deliveries and vans as unobtrusive a presence as possible.
None of the above is, of course, any news to builders. When you’re generating work through recommendation – and you’re only as good as your last job –ensuring a favourable review from the homeowner is integral to your business. In the age of online platforms, where reputations can be damaged and bad news disseminated so quickly, it’s an even
greater imperative.
More and more tradespeople now understand the value of marketing their business, with professional photography of finished jobs and testimonials recognised as powerful promotional tools.
What is frustrating is that a reality of largely satisfied customers still so rarely cuts through into the industry’s image in mainstream media, where a cowboy builder story is still the staple fare. Its appeal is, of course, intrinsically linked with the sensitivity inherent in the jobs themselves. If a consumer is financially exploited by an unscrupulous accountant or solicitor they’re going to be incensed, but it doesn’t come with the additional emotional baggage of leaving a gaping hole in the walls, roof or floor of their own personal retreat from the world. That’s what makes it a compelling story –whether on TV, online, or social media –however unrepresentative it might be.
Many tradespeople will, in fact, be able to tell a rather different story where the balance of power is firmly weighted in favour of the client. We ourselves have heard some real horror stories of late payment or, indeed, no payment at all, with very little recourse from the courts without losing your shirt on legal fees into the bargain.
That the trades prioritise customer service shouldn’t be a surprise, but it’s a positive message that is too often obscured by negative narratives. There are signs that’s starting to change. The Government is holding up construction as integral to economic growth. That will selfevidently need skilled builders to do the work, which is placing a renewed emphasis on recruitment. In promoting the industry as an attractive destination for young people the current champions of customer service that are local jobbing tradespeople are the ideal role models.

FITS THE BILL
Government introduces the Planning and Infrastructure Bill to Parliament
The bill aims to speed up planning decisions to boost housebuilding and remove unnecessary blockers and challenges to the delivery of vital developments.
Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Angela Rayner said: “We’re creating the biggest building boom in a generation –as a major step forward in getting Britain building again and unleashing economic growth in every corner of the country, by lifting the bureaucratic burden which has been holding back developments for too long.”
Reacting to the bill, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said:
“We know from research carried out by the FMB that around
three quarters of small builders view the planning system as the number one issue holding back the delivery of new homes, while lack of viable and available land are also major challenges. Supporting small builders through the planning system and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy will be key to opening up small sites, and today’s announcement will be welcomed by many across the industry.”
A DIVERSE APPROACH
Women starting construction apprenticeships increases by two-thirds since 2018
This data comes from the Construction Industry Training Board, which is urging more women to consider a career in construction and continue the upward trend. The number of women starting construction apprenticeships has risen dramatically in recent years according to the ‘Construction Apprenticeships 2025: Challenges. Opportunities. Support’ report, which found that 1,450 women started a construction apprenticeship in 2018-19, but this has jumped to 2,420 to in 2023-24.

The Masonry Association of Great Britain (MAGB) launches In response to the UK government’s ambitious ‘Get Britain Building’ initiative, a new trade association has been established to represent the entirety of the UK’s masonry sector. MAGB, co-founded by Christian Watson, Malc Hancock and Eve Livett, is dedicated to uniting contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and innovators across the entire masonry supply chain, regardless of size. Cofounded by, the visionary founders of Phoenix Group, and Eve Livett, an industry expert with vast experience in operating trade bodies, MAGB aims to fill a gap in the sector’s representation.
The extra planners that the British Property Federation is calling for would not only embed the gains afforded by planning reform but also ensure that the opportunities resulting from devolution and local government re-organisation are fully realised. This includes extra capacity to deliver the proposed new spatial development strategies and support the emerging role of Mayors in determining major planning applications. Housebuilding industry could save over 200 tonnes of carbon per year by switching to concrete facing bricks
Following its most recent EPD, calculations by Marshalls have found that the UK’s housebuilding sector could dramatically reduce its carbon footprint by switching from clay facing bricks to concrete facing bricks, with the saving equivalent to taking over 100,000 diesel cars off the road for a year.

SUPER TROWEL 2025
THE SUPER HEROES
The trowels are at the ready as the race to find Britain’s fastest bricklayer is under way
Supertrowel is bigger than ever in 2025 with five regional heats before the final this August. The event champions the skills and expertise of ordinary bricklayers, through a test of speed, quality and accuracy.
Founder Ashley Francis, himself a brickie, together with his fellow Super Trowel Directors, Jack Dawson of Hertford Regional College and bricklayer and Brick Jackets inventor, Joe Short, have a passion for the industry which is proudly on display in the event itself.
“We want to demonstrate that the building industry is fun, exciting and a great destination for young people,” enthuses Ashlely Francis. “It’s about building a community of bricklayers, and everyone’s really got behind what we’re doing. We’ve got a lot of high-profile sponsors now and they love Super Trowel.”
The road to the final began at Hertford college in March. The winner and runnerup of each of the heats will go straight through to the final, as well as the best third placed contestant from all of the regionals. They will be joined by reigning 2024 champion, Charlie Collison. The best trowel from the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 competition in Las Vegas, Cole Stamper
will be assured a place, and there’s a further international entry with Australia’s Alex Roxan. That final will take place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on 13th & 14th August. The Super Trowel champion will then get the chance to test his skills on the world stage at the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 event.
Heat is on
Peter Roberts was the head judge at Hertford, and one of a group of 29 volunteers who will be keeping a close eye on contestants at the heats and the final. “The camaraderie at these events is fantastic,” he declares, “but it’s also a very challenging examination for the participants. Each bricklayer has to meet a very stringent criteria and there are deductions for infringements. It’s not just about laying as many as you can because if you don’t get the finish right then you can lose a lot of them.”
The Super Trowel bricklayers and their accompanying hod carrier, lay as many bricks as they can on top of an eight-

metre starter course in one hour, with a further 20 minutes to point up. The devil is then in the detail, where gauge tolerance and plumbing points are assessed. Chipped bricks will detract from a score as will walls that are not level.
Showcasing skill
Many of the judges, including Peter and his colleague Ray Goddard are themselves educators and count themselves privileged to be part of a fraternity that is showcasing the trade. “It’s great for the industry,” adds Ray. “There’s a big skills shortage in construction at the moment and an initiative like Super Trowel can really communicate the ability that’s involved.”
Ash Mahoney is a Super Trowel veteran and, after a successful outing at the Newry, Northern Ireland Super Trowel heat, will be in the final in August. “It’s just such a brilliant buzz. It’s so enjoyable to do what we do day in, day out in a competition. It’s also great for young kids to see this competition because it celebrates the industry and it will hopefully play its part in making sure that there’s a next generation.”
Ashley has achieved two podium finishes, coming second in the final in Super Trowel’s first year and third in 2024. Aside from being a very good bricklayer he believes that fitness is essential for success: “You’ve really got to make sure you’re looking after yourself, because it’s hard out there for that hour.”
Indeed, what the Super Trowel competitors lay in an hour, many bricklayers would be happy with in a day. Harry Payne and George Cassidy of HRP Brickwork & Landscaping were the runners up and have secured their place in the final. “It feels great to get through,” admits the perspiring brickie. “That’s a lot of bricks to get out and my back is now killing me. I think I’ll need to get down the gym a bit more before Stoneleigh Park in August. We’re only a small local firm so the exposure that we get from success here is massive for us. As well as that, bricklaying should be recognised as a craft skill that takes years to master because it’s been underrated for far too long.”
It is a testament to that skill on display that the winner of the southern regional
heat, Tom Humphreys of ARH Developments was actually disappointed with his tally of 571 bricks in an hour. “I thought I’d get a few more than that out, to be honest, but I didn’t get many deductions either, so the quality was there. I actually competed last year, and didn’t make the final, but I’ve been practising a lot since then.”
Some of the building industries leading figures are backing Super Trowel and that includes Gavin Crane of Band of Builders, who sees a synergy between his charity and the bricklaying competition. “We’re all
about presenting a positive image of the industry and developing a community, and that’s just what Ash, Jack and Joe have achieved.”

Professional Builder visits a Surrey contractor who has made HBXL Building Software an integral part of his business
When you’re pricing a complex home improvement project –with multiple moving parts – getting just one of them wrong can be a costly mistake. Using spreadsheets and your own calculations is inherently open to error – and time consuming. Enter HBXL and its time saving, high performing EstimatorXpress software, a solution that Olly Rooks of Rooks Construction has wholeheartedly embraced.
We caught up with Olly at a substantial remodelling job in an affluent and leafy corner of Surrey. Here, a 30 sq m single storey extension, is complemented by a renovation of the entire interior (215 sq m), together with over 600 sq m of landscaping around the property. “Whilst the external façade remains the same, the inside has been gutted and we’re transforming the existing layout,” explains Rooks Construction’s eponymous founder, Olly Rooks. “There’s a new kitchen, bathrooms, central heating system, complete rewire and improvements to every room. There’s so much going on in a job like this and it’s where
EstimatorXpress really pays off.”
Rooks Construction offers a full design and build service with HBXL representing just one component of a highly professional operation. The company’s Grayshott office is a
useful resource for guiding potential and existing clients through a project in person, and all work is obtained through recommendation, or by collaborating with local architects. “Having a premise on the High Street does make us very much a part of the local community, and it means we’re much more accessible for new and existing customers. It means there’s always full transparency and we can update a client at any stage.”
Olly began his building career as a sole trader in 2010 and the Surrey firm has since expanded to an 11-strong team that can take on three or four jobs at any one time. The work he undertakes demands quality and the highest possible finish within the available budget. “When
it comes to estimates, accuracy is obviously central, because you need to be confident that your figures are reliable for the client and that you’ve factored in a fair and reasonable profit margin, but the time saving is a huge benefit,” continues the 40 year-old.
“I’ve been using the HBXL software since 2023 and before that I was using spreadsheets. I would say I’ve more than halved the time it takes to compile even a very complex quote, and the more proficient you become the quicker you are. When you’re just using your own system of spreadsheets sourcing the right prices for materials is in itself an onerous task. HBXL’s Price Tracker means the upto-date prices are included and these are automatically amended/updated on a frequent basis to reflect what you’re actually paying. Just in terms of man hours the software pays for itself very quickly.”
“On this job, for example, we’ll be building an 85 square metre patio with a retaining wall. Not only does EstimatorXpress make sure that we’re specifying the surface material accurately but if I need to add the cost of a site dumper to bring material up

the HBXL team to be invaluable. “The support from Joe Walsh at HBXL has been first class, and they’ve spent a lot of time on the phone with us. When we first started using the software they were always on hand, and I also took part in some of the online training. The live sessions HBXL offers are very useful and there’s videos that you can go back to again and again.
“At the same time, EstimatorXpress does follow a methodical sequence, which makes working your way through the different elements of the build to calculate a price for every part a straightforward task. We can alter any amounts so that it accurately reflects what our suppliers are charging us and, once you’re more conversant with it, you can find creative ways to utilise what the system offers, so that it’s working for your business.”

For Olly, the detail that a HBXL generated estimate provides the client lays the foundations for a relationship of trust from the outset. “The feedback from clients, even if we haven’t taken on the job, is always positive – they invariably tell us they really appreciate the thorough and comprehensive documents we’ve provided. Not only that but there have been a couple of times where we’ve overpriced a build and we’ve actually been able to give some money back, which does a lot for the reputation of the business.
“You can actually choose exactly what you want to show the customer, and for me the more you can break down an estimate into its build stages the better that is for them. If they have any concerns about a particular element we can bring them to our office and drill down into it further. We work on high value jobs and if we get the numbers wrong at the start we’re in big trouble,” concludes Olly. “EstimatorXpress goes a long way to making sure that doesn’t happen.”

LEAD GENERATION
CHECK MATE!
Generate new work and enjoy multiple business benefits, services and support with Checkatrade membership
Its core business remains lead generation for its builder clients, whilst simultaneously helping homeowners find reliable tradespeople in their local area. Checkatrade has, however, evolved to deliver much more than that. Today, there’s whole range of special offers, partnerships, support mechanisms and services that makes this online platform a compelling proposition for the local jobbing builder.
The guiding principle of Checkatrade is a service that is shaped around individual trade businesses. It takes into account your typical job, company size, location, geographical reach and future aspirations. Armed with that insight into your firm the Checkatrade team can put together a package that’s right for you.
More broadly, there are two plans on offer. A 12-month fixed membership period promises the consistency of a predetermined quota of leads each month. If it’s more flexibility you’re after –for seasonal workers, such as landscapers in spring, for instance, or heating engineers at the start of the colder months – there is a pay as you go model, where you decide how many leads you receive on any given month.
Checked out
Central to the integrity behind the Checkatrade brand is its vetting process, where prospective members are subject to a rigorous regime of 12 checks. These include customer experience analysis, evidence of qualifications and accreditations, such as GasSafe registration. Outstanding CCJs, trading history, and proof of public liability insurance.
HERE’S WHAT TWO CHECKATRADE MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES:
“Since joining Checkatrade, we’ve experienced incredible growth, evolving into a multi-million-pound company within just two years. Checkatrade’s customer review platform has been instrumental in building our reputation – giving potential consumers the confidence to choose us based on the experiences of our satisfied customers.
“A major factor in our success has been the constant support from our dedicated Strategic Account Manager. Their insights and tailored advice have helped us refine our marketing strategies, blending digital and printed approaches to enhance brand visibility and attract the right customers.
“Beyond lead generation, Checkatrade offers additional member benefits that have helped us grow efficiently. Discounts on workwear and tools have allowed us to expand our team while maintaining a professional image, ensuring we present ourselves at the highest standard on every job.
“Checkatrade’s in-house payment solutions have strengthened the trust between our business and our customers. By offering secure and structured payment options, customers feel at ease throughout their journey with us, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and reliability.
“Checkatrade has been more than just a lead provider – they have been a true partner in our success.”
Shaun Hayavi, Director of Ecozenic
Once accepted, the Checkatrade member profile page is the shop window that showcases your skillset and services. Through images and testimonials, it can demonstrate a history of high-quality workmanship. It’s an opportunity to differentiate your company from the competition and build your own brand.
“Current and up-to-date reviews are really important,” explains Emma Grant, Head of Trade Experience and Commercial Partnerships. “It’s what any potential client wants to see most of all and we provide a whole range of resources to help tradespeople optimise their profile, develop effective marketing strategies and, ultimately, win more work. We can help with photography, for example, and social media.”
As any builder will know, efficient channels of communication between builder and client are pivotal to the success of any project. That’s why Checkatrade has made it even easier for property owners to connect with trade firms through its consumer app. Here, job submissions can be added with photos. Contact with builders can be facilitated. Appointments can be made with notifications and updates, whilst there are also job management functions. One of the newest features is Checkatrade Pay, where builders can receive secure payments from clients via the app. It’s even possible to set up automatic reminders to your clients for when a deposit or staged payment is due.
Better business
The Checkatrade mission is to help builders make their business better, and that includes a whole range of additional benefits. “One of the partnerships we’ve recently developed is with Superscript business insurance,” continues Emma. “That means we can actually help tradespeople make sure they’ve got the right cover, and that also includes a good deal on tool and equipment insurance.
“We’ve launched a new fuel card that can save up to 10p on every litre at the pumps. Checkatrade members can access the QuickBooks accountancy service at 50% of the standard price for the first six months. There’s exclusive special offers and discounted rates for
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
“Since joining Checkatrade, I haven’t looked back. It’s grown my business, and I’m really busy now. I’ve got a good name for myself and, honestly, it’s thanks to Checkatrade. With Checkatrade it’s about the reviews – the more reviews you get, the more established you are with customers because people see that, and they feel more comfortable. So, each job that I do, I always get a customer to do a review for me. They’re all blinding reviews!
“Future customers can then see your reviews, see what quality work you’re turning out and, moving forward, when it’s time to do their job, they’re confident. That one job pays for itself, and then the rest is my money, so it is a good investment. I’m busy all month round.”

“We have members who’ve developed their businesses into multi-million-pound enterprises,” Emma concludes. “At the same time, we can cater for a sole trader
who wants to concentrate on their local patch. There’s a huge range of partners to help our trade members get great savings and top deals, which is something very unique to Checkatrade.”

TOOL UP!
Hamilton Decorating Tools offer more than a perfect finish
As decorators strive for perfection in their craft, they need tools which don’t just elevate their work, but which also safeguard their wellbeing. Repetitive strain injury (RSI) stands out as a concern, posing a threat to both productivity and health. Sarah Coussens, head of marketing for Hamilton Decorating Tools, explores some of the ways in which decorators can reduce the strain, including through the use of ergonomic painting tools, for a high-quality finish that doesn’t compromise on decorator health.
So much focus in the decorating industry is on the end product, delivering a finish to be proud of and that the customer is pleased with. However, with so many factors contributing to the job –from tools and paint, to preparation and the work environment – one of the elements often overlooked is the wellbeing of decorators.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is one of the most common complaints, with painting and decorating often listed as one of the most ‘at-risk’ careers. Completing repetitive tasks –often at awkward angles and up ladders – can take its toll, and it is easy to see the impact of ill health, particularly for selfemployed decorators. Apart from the short-term impact on productivity and job completions, failure to consider RSI can also shorten careers, leaving many in a difficult position before they can retire.
Alleviating pressure
There are ways for decorators to mitigate the risk and the potential impact by reducing the strain as they work. It largely comes down to tool choice, with a number of practical steps that tradespeople can take.
Extension poles are a simple way to help ensure an even distribution and alleviate pressure. DIYers may often just ‘get on with it’ rather than getting the right tools for the job, but professionals understand that cutting corners could cause long-term damage.
Ergonomically designed rollers also support the wrist, such as Hamilton’s Prestige Goliath frame, which has a 90° angle in the wire to help evenly distribute pressure. A good quality double-arm frame roller has the same effect, distributing pressure to both sides of the tool.
Any repetitive movements with a brush or roller are liable to cause injury over a long period of time, so it is important to understand how different tools can affect users too. Stubby handled brushes are designed for cutting-in, while sash and angled brushes have longer handles to aid precision painting and reach.
Decorators should make sure they are using the right brush for each specific job because a flicky brush, or one that is too long or too soft, could cause pain. Some brushes can also be very heavy, and when there is imbalance (for example a heavy head of filaments with a light handle) it can lead to overcompensation during paint application.
Innovation in products and testing
Of course, manufacturers are aware of these challenges and Hamilton places a huge amount of focus on product testing and development to further support decorators. There’s a lot more that goes into designing a new premium paintbrush than many may consider. That’s why Hamilton has its own cutting-edge research and development base and laboratory facilities based in the UK and Sweden. We also work closely with decorators when designing products, making sure that they are tested extensively in real life situations, from the initial prototype stage through to final product design.
“Through awareness, education and by taking practical steps to reduce risks and alleviate pressure, decorators can undoubtedly make progress to support their well-being in the workplace”
Handle type is one of the biggest areas in which we can reduce pressure for decorators. This will always come down to preference and it is impossible to have something that suits all, but Hamilton’s Perfection range has a varnished handle made from FSC® Certified wood that is traditionally shaped, offering excellent control and comfortable use.
Like all of our tools, they are tested on the job by decorators, over an extended time period, with a variety of paints. This level of in-person testing is vital to gather feedback from real life situations and help shape development.
Other wellbeing considerations
Of course, RSI is not the only wellbeing consideration for decorators and it is important to keep raising the issue of mental wellbeing in particular. One study commissioned for Mental Health Awareness Week in 2023 from two leading suppliers showed that 72% of UK painters and decorators experience mental health problems due to work.
Decorators should also mitigate respiratory risks from dust, debris and paint fumes, and take action against the

ON TREND
Jason Burns, MD of Shurtape, looks at the importance of keeping on top of decorating trends, and using the right tools to deliver them.
It feels like just a few years ago that we were all talking about magnolia and minimalism, but that was in the 90s. We then moved swiftly into the noughties, which brought grey and gallery walls, both of which are still popular (good job as my gallery wall has never gone anywhere). And now we are in the era of maximalism and mindfulness.
All types of fashion moves in cycles and we often find ourselves revisiting or tweaking old trends. But there are always new ideas to keep an eye on too. The role of a good decorator is to know those trends and be able to help customers follow them, with up to the minute tricks, knowledge on colours and textures, and the right tools for the job.
Double drenching
A popular trend at the time of writing is double drenching. This is not colour drenching, in which an entire room is painted the same colour, instead the room is effectively split in half and painted all over in two colours. The term was coined by paint brand Little Greene but painting
a room in two colours is not entirely new: the look was very popular in the seventies. The formal name has just given it a new lease of life. It’s a great look, whether the colours clash or complement each other –and, of course, FrogTape will be your best friend, as those paint colours cannot bleed into one another.
There needs to be clean lines and clear differentiation in the drenching. The best product to use here would be FrogTape Delicate Surface, ideal for creating the neatest possible lines, with PaintBlock Technology removing the risk of bleed when painting on top of existing paint. Our new FrogTape Containment Tape will also be useful here. It is perfect for holding up poly sheeting to seal off areas and contain dust during renovation or painting.
Stripe drenching
We’ve also seen a lot of talk about stripe drenching (drenching in general is very popular, whether it’s fabric, texture or paint – it’s part of the overall trend for maximalism, which is being confident and bold in decorating).
Stripe drenching takes the popular stripe – vertical, horizontal or diagonal –and covers the whole room, either with matching furniture or accessories, or even going up onto the ‘fifth wall’ (the ceiling). This makes a really bold statement and is an extra challenge for the decorator, but one which does deliver great results for the customer and the professional’s portfolio. Again, the tool to use is FrogTape Delicate Surface.
Exterior decorating
The UK has definitely taken a steer from warmer climates over the last few years, with outdoor kitchens and living areas becoming more popular, and ever since Covid, there has been a steady rise in garden offices and gyms. We’ve recently launched FrogTape High Bond Exterior Tape, which provides excellent adhesion outside and is especially ideal for hard-tostick-to self-cleaning paint surfaces.
Trend setters
It’s important for tradespeople to keep on top of trends in this era of sharing. Decorators are professional tradespeople with a brilliant skillset, but they can also be consultants and advise the customer on possible effects and trends that might work well, in a domestic or commercial setting. It can also create visually impactful content for a decorator’s social media channels, which can be fantastic for new business.
Social media can also be used to find trends, by following key media titles and interior influencers, searching up relevant hashtags and checking out what the decorating brands (paint companies, brush companies, us!) are talking about. Reading consumer home interest magazines online or in print also provides information and inspiration that will be consumed by
FrogTape delivers professional results you can trust –when it matters most. Performance cannot be compromised; decorators and builders want to deliver the best possible finish. So, we help deliver that finish, because we keep an eye on trends ourselves. We work with a number of professional builders and decorators to make sure we are always on top of fashions –creating the best tools for the job. It’s why we’ve also just launched our FrogTape Multipacks, available in Multi-Surface, Delicate Surface and new ProGrade Blue; ideal for builders and decorators who prefer to buy in bulk.
By doing the same – working with the right products and continually researching new trends – decorators can provide the best possible results to their customers, creating high quality finishes that will stand the test of time… or at least until the next new trend comes along!

COATS OF MANY COLOURS
Colour is much more than making a space look good; it shapes experiences, creates mood and makes a statement. Expert Colour Consultant at Crown Paints, Kathryn Lloyd, discusses the latest colour trends including the Crown Paints Colour Insights 2025/2026 and shares practical advice to build confidence in helping customers choose the perfect shades for their homes.
Choosing a colour scheme is so personal. There are so many factors that contribute to the best colour choice for a room in a home, from its occupant’s personal taste and personality to the size of the room and access to natural light. These factors can make it overwhelming when a client asks for your advice on colour… not to mention, most homeowners will know what they want but might not necessarily know how to achieve it or even explain it.
Keeping up with the latest colour trends is the easiest way to advice customers on colour schemes. And to make that easier, each year Crown Launches a collection of new colour palettes designed to capture the essence of contemporary design.
This year, we’ve looked beyond the usual sources of inspiration and considered global shifts, including environmental changes, technological advancements, and evolving human interaction with spaces to create our five new colour palettes.
Named after the themes they tap into, Co, Choreography, Disrupt, G-local, and Faraway, each reflect a different cultural trend, making it easier than ever to recommend colour combinations that resonate with customers.
CO
Think of this palette as the happy medium between productivity and relaxation – it’s perfect to use in spaces for socialising and entertaining like living rooms and dining rooms. The base colours are soft, calming greens and greys, but we’ve added some warm reds and yellows to infuse it with life and energy.
CHOREOGRAPHY
Soft lilacs, muted greens and richer tones come together to create a colour scheme that feels warm, inviting, and a little bit luxurious. It’s a palette that adapts well to its surroundings, making it perfect for bedrooms, lounges and anywhere people want to feel cocooned and comfortable.

DISRUPT
Disrupt is a palette for making a statement and commanding attention, with electric blues, vibrant oranges and yellow accents. The greys in the mix help to ground everything, making sure it’s striking without feeling chaotic. It’s great for commercial projects like retail spaces, creative offices or even standout feature walls in a home..
FARAWAY
Iridescent blues and purples mix with warm greens to create a futuristic colour scheme that shifts and adapts depending on the light. It’s got a high-tech, digital feel but stays warm enough to work in real-world spaces. It’s a versatile palette and suits most spaces. For a more daring approach use the stronger tones and for a subtle result use more of the Clay White to create a calming ambience.
Colour choice
We understand that working with customers to help choose their colour schemes can be tricky, especially as not every customer will have a clear vision of what they want. Some customers may just need a gentle nudge in the right direction, but others will be looking to their decorator for even more support.
We have a bank of helpful tools and services to help you understand colour and support your clients to make informed colour choices.
G-LOCAL
This palette blends traditional neutral tones with subtle pops of modern synthetic green and orange. It was inspired by the connection of local craftsmanship with global trends and is perfect for customers who want an understated palette, using textures and materials for interest with accents of bright saturated colour for focal areas.
“Named
after the themes they tap into, Co, Choreography, Disrupt, G-local, and Faraway, each reflect a different cultural trend, making it easier than ever to recommend colour combinations that resonate with customers”
• Co – A light and breezy palette that fosters productivity and relaxation.
• Choreography – An organic cocooning palette that evolves to the individual.
• Disrupt – A bold mix of of shades that provokes interaction and emotion.
• G-local – A neutral base with subtle green and orange accents, merging tradition with modernity.
• Faraway – An iridescent and dynamic palette that enables individual expression.
We recently launched our new Colour Edit, a purposely curated colour collection containing 160 versatile shades, including those from our latest Colour Insights, selected using advanced trend forecasting and 3D colour mapping.
More than just colour
Pairing the right finish with the right colour selection is key to achieving the desired aesthetic. We’re seeing a growing preference for matt and ultra-matt finishes, especially with our Co and
Choreography palettes, where softness is key for creating welcoming spaces.
For those looking to make a bold statement, Disrupt shines when in highgloss, emphasising its high-energy. Meanwhile, Fareway’s futuristic vision is enhanced by satin finishes, adding depth and movement.

Property Type:
Historic London Townhouse
Objective: Restoration of a four-story townhouse to its original architectural state while ensuring safe and effective removal of lead-based paint.
Historical context
Belgravia is one of London’s most prestigious districts, with properties dating back to the early 19th century. Originally developed by Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, and designed by Thomas Cubitt, the area remains a symbol of luxury and exclusivity. With real estate values exceeding £50 million, properties in this district require meticulous restoration to maintain their historical and aesthetic integrity.
Given the age of the townhouse, it was highly likely that multiple layers of older paint contained lead, which was commonly used in historic paints for durability and moisture resistance. The removal of such paint requires careful handling to prevent toxic exposure.

LEGALLY BOND
Want to keep everything above board when it comes to your choice of sealants, adhesives and building chemicals? UKbased manufacturer, Bond It can help.
Ask yourself a question.
What do you know about European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008? Or how about the GB PIC regime? Or the Biocidal Products and Chemicals (Appointment of Authorities and Enforcement) Regulations 2013?
If the answer is not a great deal, don’t worry. Manufacturer of sealants, adhesives and building chemicals, Bond It concerns itself with these important legal requirements, so you don’t have to.
“Building chemicals are arguably one of the most legislated of all construction product categories” comments Sam Birt, Regulatory & Technical Data Manager at Bond It. Each of the chemical components that make up our product formulations is subject to legal requirements such as REACH.
“Standing for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals, these regulations, which were initially implemented by the European Union, have been since been replaced by laws of the same name developed by the UK Government.
Protecting people and the planet “REACH applies to all businesses that import, make, sell or distribute chemicals whether that’s as raw materials or in their finished state. This includes those chemicals used in sealants, adhesives, preservers, waterproofing compounds and every similar building product.
“The aim of legislation like REACH is to
protect human health and the environment. They’re not fixed obligations either. As our understanding of the impact of different chemicals and of less harmful alternatives grows, legal requirements can and often do evolve.”
As a prime example, wood preservers are currently the focus of changes being driven by legislation known as the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, Regulation (EU) 528/2012). This requires the active substances employed by wood preservers in order to destroy, deter, or neutralise organisms like bacteria and fungi to be authorised by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
As part of the approval process, the effectiveness of the active substance is evaluated alongside its risks. If a safer alternative can be used, even if it entails some acceptable trade off in terms of performance, then affected products may have to update their formulations or be withdrawn from the market.
Timing is everything
Updating the formulation of building chemicals in line with changing legislation is only part of the challenge. For manufacturers like Bond It, it’s just as important to pre-empt these changes and to ensure its products are ready in good time.
“Continuity of supply is just as important to Bond It as product conformity or availability” explains Sam. “If you wait until new regulations come into effect, it’s a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.
“We want to make sure there is no disruption to the trade professionals using our products and this means implementing changes to our range and rolling them out well in advance.”
Winning formulas
Reflecting its forward-looking approach, Bond It has already and proactively updated the formulation of its bitumen products. Since 2024, they have employed a type of hydrocarbon that is less hazardous to the environment.
The hydrocarbon that was previously used is not subject to any specific legislation yet, but it has been identified as a priority substance and so is likely to be the focus of pending review. As a result of this change, Bond It’s bitumen products no longer carry the labels and warning symbols for ‘Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects”, nor “Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.”
Similarly, the business is currently developing a range of oxime silicone sealants using a MEKO-free formulation that are odourless, safer for users and environmentally friendly.

ON THE RIGHT ’TREX’
Prevent decking failures with essential moisture protection tips from Trex
Decks are central to outdoor living, but moisture-related failures are a constant threat in our damp climate. Rotting ledger boards, weakened joists, and corroded fasteners can all compromise the safety and longevity of a deck. For builders, taking proactive steps to manage moisture is key to ensuring a deck that lasts.
How to Build a Moisture-Resistant Deck
How long a deck lasts depends heavily on factors like material choice, construction quality, and exposure to the elements – including moisture. While water exposure is unavoidable, the right materials and construction methods can help ensure the long-term durability of your deck projects. By taking these proactive steps, you can extend deck lifespans, reduce callbacks, and protect your reputation.
Select the Right Decking & Hardware
Choosing materials that withstand constant exposure to damp conditions is critical for long-term deck durability. In our climate, composite decking is often the most practical choice over traditional timber, thanks to its moisture resistance, stability, and low maintenance needs. Unlike wood, composites won’t absorb water, split, or rot, making them ideal for high-exposure areas.
For projects where timber is preferred, high-quality hardwoods can offer better moisture resistance than softwoods, though they still require sealing. Pressuretreated softwood remains the most budget-friendly option, but it will demand ongoing maintenance by your clients to prevent decay.
Pro Tip: For maximum moisture protection, seal all cut ends of timber decking with an appropriate end-grain sealant. This prevents water absorption, which can lead to premature rot and splitting – especially in softwoods.
Equally important is selecting the right hardware. Fasteners, brackets, and connectors are vulnerable to corrosion in damp conditions, which can weaken structural integrity over time. Using corrosion-resistant options, such as stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised hardware, ensures long-term durability and reduces the risk of rust-related failures.
Tip 1: Fully Seal the Ledger & Sub-Ledger
The ledger board is the most failure-
prone structural component of an attached deck, with moisture infiltration being one of the biggest culprits. If water seeps behind the ledger, it can weaken fasteners, accelerate wood rot, and undermine the deck’s structural integrity.
Don’t overlook the sub-ledger area, either. Moisture can collect behind the ledger board, seeping into the building envelope and leading to hidden decay. Over time, this can cause issues not just for the deck but for the house itself.
To help prevent these water-related problems, use butyl flashing tape to create a watertight barrier. Trex Seal offers tape solutions for both the ledger and sub-ledger, sealing fastener penetrations on the face of the ledger and protecting the area behind it where water often collects. Unlike traditional metal flashing, these tapes feature an aluminium lining, which helps prevent slumping and ensures they stay in place without slipping.
Pro Tip: When installing Trex Seal Ledger Tape, fold it in half and remove one release liner to adhere it to the vertical surface. After securing, remove the second liner and press firmly against the ledger.
through skirting or fascia vents can help keep the substructure dry.
Tip 2: Shield the Substructure with Protective Tape
Joists, beams, and bearers support the weight of the deck. If moisture weakens them, sagging or structural failure can follow. By covering the tops of joists, beams, and bearers before installing decking boards, you create a protective barrier that minimises water penetration at these vulnerable points.
Keep moisture out by covering all joints where joists meet the bearer, rim board, or blocking with overlapping waterproof tape. This helps create a continuous barrier, preventing water from seeping into exposed timber connections.
Pro Tip: Use a high-quality joist tape like Trex Protect to not only shield the substructure from moisture but also seal around fasteners, reducing water intrusion at key connections while providing better screw hold than acrylic or asphalt-based tape.
Tip 3: Design for Drainage and Ventilation
Water should always have a way to drain away from the deck structure. Gaps between decking boards are a given, but ventilation beneath the deck is equally critical.
For ground-level decks, a minimum clearance of 150mm between the
For elevated decks, an under-deck drainage system can provide an added layer of water management, diverting water away from the deck’s foundation through a trough-and-gutter system and exiting via a downpipe. This approach keeps the area beneath the deck dry, protecting the supporting structure from excess moisture while also making the space usable for storage or as an additional outdoor living area.
Pro Tip: An over-the-joist solution like Trex RainEscape channels water away while also covering the joists, preventing direct water contact and reducing the risk of moisture damage to the structural components.
Tip 4: Built Dry, Built Right
A well-built deck isn’t just about appearance – it’s about durability. Even the best-looking deck won’t stay that way if rot sets in due to poor water management. And when that happens, it’s not just your client’s problem – it’s yours too.
Prioritising smart material choices, effective waterproofing, proper drainage, and adequate ventilation from day one means fewer failures, fewer callbacks, and decks that hold up beautifully season

Professional Builder’s Tibby Singh nails it with the Makita Cordless 18V Framing Nailer LXT DBN900
Makita is a well-known brand that manufactures high quality power tools and probably the first brand of tools I started my career in construction with. I was excited to get my hands on the new Makita Cordless 18V Framing Nailer LXT DBN900 and was looking forward to testing to see if they had nailed it.
Owing to their size, Framing Nailers –or first fix nailers – don’t usually come in their own case. It is, however, the first time I’ve seen one in its own solid protective case, and there’s the added convenience of ample space to store batteries, charger and spare nails. So, no more hunting for batteries or nails when you’re in the middle of a job.
but, having said that, I don’t know of any first fix nailer that is. It weighs between
4.9kg to 5.4kg, depending on the battery being used. However, it’s well balanced so it doesn’t feel like it’s leaning to one side. The advantage of having some weight behind the tool is that it adds to the sturdy, solid feel, giving you confidence in every nail driven. It is designed to handle 50mm-90mm nails, making it versatile enough to tackle framing and other construction tasks with ease.
Easy to operate
The tool is incredibly easy to operate with an ‘On’ button on the side. It is equipped with both single-fire and bump-fire modes, which gives you the ability to tackle a wide range of tasks. Whether you need a
technology you’ll experience no misfires. Although you may need to check if the nail really has gone in because, with its air spring mechanism, it penetrates through the surface in a flash.
The design on the nail gun isn’t just about power but the control too. With the pointed teeth on the nose, it excels at skew nailing, which is also known as toe nailing. This is a technique for fastening two pieces of wood together by driving
nails at an angle. This improves the accuracy and means it’s less likely to slip, which can be dangerous. Usually, first fix nail guns don’t have a nose cover, but this Makita example has. It ensures that delicate surfaces stay undamaged, keeping your work surface clean and pristine. It’s not often you would need to do this, but the option is there and it is a great idea.
Lighting the way
Another bright feature is a small light at the front of the tool, which improves visibility when working in darker environments. The lamp keeps on lighting while pulling the trigger or actuating the contact element. This then goes off approximately 10 seconds after releasing the switch trigger and contact element.
The depth adjustment dial allows you to easily customise the depth of the nails, ensuring a perfect finish on every
the surface so there’s no wasting time or nails by guessing.
This nail gun is engineered with a practicality in mind. It has a swivelling hook to hang the tool, so when you’re taking a break or moving to the next working area your gun is always within reach. The rubberised grip gives you a comfortable hold while also protecting the tool from bumps and drops.
So, whether you’re hammering out a big project – or just nailing the odd screw here and there – the new Makita Cordless 18V Framing Nailer LXT DBN900 is a serious tool that packs a punch. It combines durability, efficiency and innovation in one tidy package, ready to take on anything you throw at it. It’s safe to say, no screws have been left loose, and Makita have nailed it!
ALL KITTED OUT
Neil Wycherley, Head of Technical at Staircraft, looks specifically at how door kits make the installation process quicker and simpler.
Doors kits are an indispensable way of making sure that internal doors are installed correctly and that the end customer has trouble-free use. A typical door kit comprises the door itself, the frame (or lining), hinges and door stop. Each of these elements must be installed correctly to ensure the door operates smoothly.
ABOUT STAIRCRAFT:
Staircraft has developed a range of products and systems that address common challenges in construction: Precision-Engineered Staircases: Utilising advanced 3D modelling and CNC machining, Staircraft produces staircases with a high degree of accuracy, reducing on-site adjustments and installation time.
Integrated I-Joist Systems: The manufacturer’s proprietary I-Joist flooring solutions offer superior strengthto-weight ratios, allowing for longer spans and more flexible floor plans. Smart Design Software: Bespoke
Step 1
Openings should be made 66mm wider than the door and 52mm larger than the height to allow for any packing and adjustments needed. When fitting to a block wall it is recommended that a plywood sub liner is installed prior to plastering.
Step 2
Place the door lining on a flat surface whilst keeping in mind the handling
Step 3
Position the assembled frame into the opening, ensuring the hinge jamb is plumb first. Then follow up by making sure the head and latch jamb are also square.
Once this is done, fix the frame into place using the pre-drilled holes.
At this stage you may want to install a dummy door to make sure the frame is square and plumb.
Step 4
Before you fit the door stop, ensure that all fixtures have been inserted into the pre drilled holes in the Jambs. The Door stop has an offset to suit a 44mm and 35mm door. Ensure the doorstop is orientated the correct way to suit your door thickness.
Fix the door stops to all three sides. Secure the door stop by Pinning in place.
Step 5
Our door kits are supplied with hinges preinstalled onto the door ready to hang. Hinge pockets are also cut into the lining to avoid having to remove the hinge during redecoration.
Step 6 Remove male hinge from the door and install into precut pockets in the jamb, ensuring it is flush. Then install the keep into the pre-cut pocket.
Finally, check that there is a 2mm gap evenly around the door. There is a square adjuster plate on each of our hinges that is factory set to zero. This can be adjusted to1mm, +1mm and +2mm by matching the nib on the plate to the corresponding number on the female hinge. This allows for any slight deviation in the fitting of the door frame.

RAISE THE ‘SPECTRE’
Choose high-performance
Whatever your trade you need faith in your fixings – that they will do the job without corroding or failing. It’s a question of peace of mind, and by selecting solutions with the premium features of the Spectre range that’s exactly what you’re purchasing.
“Timber is a natural material that changes according to the atmospherics, and over time,” explains carpenter and joiner, Peter Carter. “Varying moisture levels can make it swell and shrink and, if they’re not to loosen over time, woodscrews need to be able to cope with that. I’ve found that these Spectre fixings will do just that. We’ve used them on fencing and decking, in hardwoods, softwoods, and chipboard and they’ve always held firm.”
The Spectre Advanced Multi-purpose Yellow Countersunk woodscrews are designed for either interior or exterior timber projects and in the latter applications holding up against the elements is a prerequisite. These woodscrews benefit from a zinc yellow passivated coating, but just what does that mean? Zinc is already a highly corrosion resistant material, and the zinc plate on these fixings is itself afforded further protection with a yellow passivated layer.
The countersunk heads provide a flush and smooth finish, and with a tub of 850 screws in 5.0 x 100mm you’ll have plenty
to be getting on with. A drill bit is provided in that tub but they are equally compatible with most screwdrivers or drill drivers and lengths range from 12-280mm.
“I find that the screws clamp the wood nice and tightly and there’s no splitting or jacking,” continues Peter. All of those user-friendly properties are the product of a meticulous attention to detail. All the threads benefit from a sawtooth design to prevent splitting, for instance. There’s a quick start type 17 flashpoint end. A reamer at the top of the screw just before the threads helps to bring the two pieces of timber your screwing into together, and it’s fully threaded up to 50mm.
MEASURE UP WITH SPECTRE
The new ‘Measure up with Spectre’ initiative offers exciting rewards to customers purchasing its Spectre TimberFix Screws and Spectre Advance Multi-Purpose Screws in Megatubs. This new promotional campaign targets professionals in the building, landscaping, and fencing industries.
With the purchase of each Megatub of the Spectre TimberFix or Spectre Advance Multi-Purpose Screws customers will receive a free Spectre-branded 5 metre measuring tape. Additionally, every pallet of 50 tubs is loaded with two Stanley Fatmax Combi Drills, providing customers with a 1 in 25 chance to take home this highly sought-after tool.
‘Wood’ as gold
The Spectre advanced screw range is designed to meet the specific requirements of exterior timber projects, including those involving fencing, decking, and landscaping. When working with timber, the ability to ensure a secure, long-lasting fastening is critical. Timber can be a challenging material to work with due to its tendency to expand, contract, and react to moisture, which can cause fastenings to weaken over time.
With the high-performance features of Spectre advanced screws, such as the corrosion-resistant coating and surface hardening, professionals can confidently rely on these screws for projects where longevity and strength are a must. Whether it’s securing fence posts, constructing decking, or working with timber cladding, these screws are up to the task, ensuring that the timber remains secure and stable throughout its lifecycle.

TAKE IT E-ASY
a good build and to maintain a great reputation. Steering away from a faithful product that has been used for years is something some are reluctant to try. However, Saint-Gobain Weber has risen to the challenge of introducing a new monocouche render that not only performs but is better for the planet.
Builders want a product that is easy to work with and performs well, but there’s no doubt that environmental impact should be an important consideration when choosing building materials. The built environment remains one of the biggest contributors to global warming. Around 39% of global carbon emissions come from buildings and 11% from materials and construction1. This means it is important to consider alternative products that tick the box for both sustainability and performance.
This is why Saint-Gobain Weber has introduced weberpral E – a new monocouche render which has increased
Elissa Turnbull, product marketing manager at SaintGobain Weber, tells Professional Builder more about its latest monocouche render – weberpral E
levels of recycled material. It boasts a 22%2 reduction in carbon emissions from fossil fuels and by 10% overall compared to its existing product. Not only that, the monocouche render cuts non-renewable energy consumption by 19%, uses 28%
less water in the raw material supply and saves 25% energy consumption in total over the lifecycle of the product.
With the likes of Storm Bert and Storm
Darragh recently affecting properties across the nation, building products also need to be able to perform to withstand the elements. As well as reducing environmental impact, they must be developed to protect against summer storms and wet winter months, and all year round in some UK locations where harsh weather conditions are the norm and are regularly classified as ‘severe exposure’.
With many renders requiring 20mm thickness in such locations to combat high levels of wind-driven rain and frost, weberpral E has reduced water absorption so can be applied at just 15mm thickness to achieve the same performance. This not only cuts the amount of material needed by around 25% – thus lowering costs – but also contributes to a faster, more efficient build. Through-coloured for a lowmaintenance finish, the render is also resistant to algae growth and can be applied to create ashlar or quoin details.
Real-world performance
Unless a render offers a great finish and easy application, a builder is unlikely to choose the product, even with industrybeating sustainability credentials. To achieve this high level of performance, we worked with a panel of professional renderers across the UK to help develop and test weberpral E to make sure that it carries the same industry-leading
standard of performance customers have become accustomed to.
In blind trials carried out with four other leading monocouche renders, weberpral E was rated number one across several key performance areas, including spraying, ruling, scraping and ease of application. The feedback from live projects has also been overwhelmingly positive, with contractors noting how much lighter, whiter and easier it is to apply. In trials, applicators reported that it was more comfortable to use and easier to spray and rule.
Following blind testing at Weber’s Technical Academy, Mark Pickthall from MP Plastering called it “The best product he had ever used,” while Bradley Halls from Complete Rendering Systems (CRS). added: “It provided a great, consistent finish and being sustainable is very important to us.”
Environmental aims
Ultimately, the new weberpral E render is just as good as the original monocouche products but is better for people and the planet. At Weber, our target is to reach net zero by 2050 with a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. It’s a big task that requires effort and scrupulous research, testing and development, but it is one we are committed to.
To reduce the reliance on using traditional cement, many of Weber
products use cement replacement technology. However, the new approach for weberpral E uses the next generation of cement replacement and introduces a more sustainable alternative resource.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is available for weberpral E, making it and weberpral M and D the only monocouche renders in the market to carry the Type III environmental label. All EPD data has been verified by a third party. Having an EPD in place for weberpral E was a vital step to offer the sector verified information on cradle-tograve environmental performance, while giving customers information that helps them decarbonise and reduce their own environmental footprint.

SOLAR, SO GOOD
Bringing together the aesthetic appeal, heritage and robust performance of Marley’s Lincoln Clay Pantile, with the renewable technology advantages of its integrated Marley SolarTile ® solution, has delivered a striking detached house, which will also provide the property owners with sustainability benefits into the future.
With the project situated in rural Lincolnshire, the developer, Jamie Marshall, was keen to ensure the roofscape design fitted perfectly within the surrounding vernacular. This underpinned the selection of Lincoln Clay Pantile in a rustic red colourway, as it perfectly complemented a secondary specified roof tile, the Acme clay plain tile in a Red Smooth colour.
Cadell Beasley, Area Specification Manager for Marley, says the roof tile selection works perfectly: “The Lincoln and Acme tiles are perfectly in keeping with what is traditionally seen in the Lincolnshire area.
“In particular, the Lincoln Clay Pantile, with its s-curve profile and thin leading edge, is an ideal match for the existing properties located nearby. The Rustic Red colourway also incorporates a flash of dusting to create a more weathered appearance and enhanced kerb-side

The new build project has also takenadvantage of modern renewable technology solutions, thanks to the inclusion of an integrated solar PV specification. In addition to its Lincoln pantiles and Acme plain tiles, the same manufacturer has also supplied eight 335Wp solar PV panels. They have been fitted directly onto the roof, replacing a section of tiles, to provide a seamless and fully integrated finish.
The solar PV array will allow the new property owner to access renewable energy via the roof, which will help to address energy efficiency and lower
household energy bills.
Jamie Marshall comments: “Being able to work with Marley to source its outstanding clay pantile and plain tile solutions, as well as the solar PV array, all from a single source, has been very helpful in achieving a fully integrated roof system finish.
“We’ve been able to deliver the best of both worlds – by combining the aesthetic appeal and proven performance of traditional clay tiles, along with the undoubted sustainability and future proofing benefits that solar PV provides. I’m delighted with the final roofscape we’ve been able to create together.”
PLAYING BY THE RULES
Scarlet Banks, Director at Hilton Banks, explains what you need to know to stay compliant when using acid-based cleaners
If you’ve ever had to clear a serious drain blockage or deal with stubborn limescale, you’ll know that some jobs need more than just a standard cleaner. In high-use environments, grease, scale and food debris can build up fast, leading to slow drainage, bad smells and even costly downtime. High-strength acid-based cleaners are essential for breaking down tough blockages and keeping everything running smoothly.
However, these powerful products come with strict rules. Since October 2023, the Control of Explosives Precursors and Poisons Regulations 2023 has put tighter controls on who can buy high-strength acids and how they should be stored and handled. If you’re a trade professional who relies on these cleaners, it’s important to understand the new regulations to avoid delays or being refused a sale when making a purchase.
What are acid-based cleaners?
Acid-based cleaners are designed to dissolve tough deposits like grease, hair, paper, food debris, limescale and mineral build-up from drains, toilets and industrial surfaces. Unlike household cleaners, these products are used in settings where heavy use has led to blockages or scale build-up that need a fast and powerful solution.
There are two main types of acid-based cleaners. Hydrochloric acid-based
solutions, such as HB Trade’s Spirits of Salt, are commonly used for descaling in washrooms, commercial kitchens and industrial equipment affected by hard water deposits. Sulphuric acid-based cleaners, such as HB Trade’s Bullitt Drain Cleaner, are used for quickly clearing blocked drains, as they rapidly break down grease, hair and other organic matter.
Understanding the regulations
The Control of Explosives Precursors and Poisons Regulations 2023 was introduced to prevent the misuse of high-strength acids and, put simply, any chemical that can be used in the illicit manufacture of explosives or as a poison is now tightly controlled. Both hydrochloric acid (10% concentration or higher) and Sulphuric acid (15% concentration or higher) fall into this category. These products are now
classified as regulated substances, meaning that not everyone can buy them.
To purchase these chemicals as an individual, an Explosives Precursors and Poisons (EPP) licence is required which proves you are authorised to buy and use such substances. If you’re a trade professional you don’t need a licence, but you do need to prove you’re in the trade when purchasing regulated products. This means providing photo ID (a passport, driving licence, trade or business ID) and your business details.
If you’re purchasing on behalf of a company, you must give the name of an authorised buyer and VAT number if the business is VAT registered. If you are a regular customer, you will only need to provide these details every 18 months, unless any significant changes are made to an order.
Anyone who can’t provide the right information will not be able to buy these products and if a seller thinks anything seems suspicious about the sale, like a request for an unusually large quantity, they are legally required to report it. These rules are in place to ensure that only professionals with a genuine need can access these chemicals so turn up at a supplier without the correct ID or business details and you won’t be able to complete your purchase – which could delay urgent jobs.
However, if the extra paperwork is an issue, there are lower-strength alternatives available that don’t require additional checks. HB Trade, for example, offers a lower-strength version of Bullitt: Bullitt Kitchen and Bathroom (caustic soda based) and Bullitt Biological (enzyme based) that still provides effective drain cleaning without the extra restrictions.
Everyone, even experienced professionals, need to take care when
using high-strength acids. These products can cause serious burns if they come into contact with skin and release toxic fumes if mixed with other substances.
eye protection and suitable clothing. Make sure the area is well-ventilated to prevent inhaling fumes and never mix acids with bleach or alkaline cleaners as this can create dangerous gases.
Storage is just as important – these products must be kept securely to prevent unauthorised access and when it’s time to dispose of any waste, local regulations must be followed to guarantee it’s done safely and legally.
For plumbers, drainage professionals and maintenance teams, high-strength acidbased cleaners are a great tool for tackling tough blockages and deep cleaning – with the new rules in place, buying them just requires more care and preparation. Making sure you have the right ID and business details before heading to the counter will save time and hassle and ensure you can continue using these powerful solutions effectively and legally.
HOLDING FIRM
James
Robinson,
Sales and Marketing Director of Samac Fixings, offers his advice on picking the right masonry fixings
QWhat are the key factors to consider when choosing fixings for different types of masonry materials?
The most important thing is understanding the job at hand. For heavyduty applications like securing steel beams, utility poles or structural supports, you need a robust fixing like Samac’s Atlas Bolts. They’re designed for dense masonry materials like concrete and brick where strength and reliability are critical. For lighter applications, such as fixing window frames or battens, Atlas Concrete Screws are a good option. They’re quick to install as they don’t need any sleeves or plugs, making the job faster and easier. In high-load situations or when dealing with awkward materials, chemical anchors are ideal. Samac’s Atlas Chemical Anchors are perfect for securing threaded rods or bolts into concrete, especially where vibration or extreme pressure is a concern.
QWhat are the common pitfalls installers face when selecting and using masonry fixings and how can they be avoided?
One of the biggest mistakes is overtightening the fixing. It’s easy to think tighter means stronger but this can actually damage the substrate or strip the
fixing, weakening the hold. When using something like an Atlas Concrete Screw, it’s important to tighten it just enough for it to grip without causing damage.
Choosing the correct length and diameter is also really important for a secure fixing. One of the most common errors is drilling the hole too large – if the hole is bigger than the recommended diameter, the fixing won’t grip properly and will eventually work loose. On the other hand, drilling a hole too small risks cracking the masonry. Length matters too – a screw that’s too long can push through the substrate or damage materials behind it, while one that’s too short won’t hold the required load securely and could loosen over time.
To make things straightforward, all Atlas Fixings include clear guidance on minimum hole depth and drill size, helping installers get it right first time. It’s the small details like these that prevent unnecessary headaches and avoid costly callbacks from dissatisfied customers.
QHow do environmental conditions affect your choice of coating for
The environment has a huge impact on the long-term performance of fixings. For

internal projects or sheltered areas, a standard BZP (Bright Zinc Plated) coating provides good protection against rust and wear. However, if you’re working in an exposed environment like a garden wall or outdoor structure, a ZYP (Zinc and
degrading over time and your work will stay solid and secure.
Outdoor projects often involve a mix of materials like masonry and timber. How can installers ensure they’re using the right fixings across all areas of the build?
For a neat finish in timber applications, Atlas Screws are a smart choice. Their countersunk, flush-fit design ensures the screw head sits level with the surface, making them ideal where aesthetics matter – such as decking, fencing, or timber cladding. Each screw features serrated threads that actively clear timber debris as they drive in, helping to reduce fixing stress and minimise the risk of splitting, even in denser or pressure-treated timbers. Combined with a TX drive for improved torque transfer and reduced cam-out, installers benefit from a more secure, controlled fixing every time. For example, when fitting timber battens to a block wall as part of a garden seating area, installers can use Atlas Bolts for the heavier masonry applications and switch to self-countersinking Atlas screws for the timber elements – ensuring a consistent, high-quality result across the entire structure without the need to juggle multiple fixing types.
For structural applications where maximum holding power is essential, M16 bolts are a good solution. These heavy-duty fasteners are ideal for anchoring steel structures, securing baseplates or connecting timber and concrete elements in larger builds.
Q How does Samac ensure the reliability and strength of its masonry fixings?
We don’t just sell fixings – we test them rigorously to ensure they perform under pressure. This means we know exactly how much weight they can handle and how they will perform in realworld conditions.
QAny recent innovations for Samac that have improved performance or ease of installation?
We are very proud to have recently launched the Atlas Pan Head Screw which has made life much easier for installers working with UPVC or aluminium window frames. The wider, flatter head design prevents the screw from biting too far into the frame, reducing the risk of cracking or damaging the material.

PUSH AHEAD
Richard Bateman, Product Marketing manager at RWC explores the essential role of push-fit plumbing solutions and how the technology is lending itself to valve installation.
It is no secret that plumbing and heating installers’ schedules are busy. Whether they’re carrying out maintenance work on ageing systems, installing new fixtures, fittings and appliances, or supporting their customers with larger scale renovation works, their days are varied and, typically, long.
To reduce the complexity of everyday tasks, installers need solutions that are reliable, easy to use, readily available and deliver the same high levels of quality that they pride themselves on.
For years, this is where push-fit technology has played a huge role and, at some point, almost every installer will have used it on a job. It’s technology that simplifies installations by removing the need for tools and hot works, technology that speeds up installation times, and technology that delivers consistently high levels of quality, durability and reliability.
As the pioneer of plastic push-fit technology, JG Speedfit has engineered an extensive range of plumbing solutions that professionals can depend on. By reducing complexity on the job, installers
can save up to 40% of their time on installations compared to traditional techniques, while delivering safe and secure connections every time.
Now, with the Extended JG Speedfit Range, the role of push-fit technology extends beyond pipes, fittings and connections, offering installers the ease of push-fit technology with the essential valves used on everyday systems.
The value of valves
Water control valves are vital to the work of installers and the systems they create. As well as supporting the control of water around a system and ensuring every outlet and appliance can draw on the
“ With the E xtended JG S peedfit Range, the role of push-fit technology extends beyond pipes, fittings and connections, offering installers the ease of push-fit technology with the essential valves used on everyday systems.”
water pressure required to deliver, valves can enhance the efficiency of systems.
Pairing these essential plumbing solutions with push-fit technology makes it even simpler to create reliable, efficient and long-lasting systems – all while reducing complexity on the job.
Within the Extended Range, there are solutions that prioritise fuss-free installation, enhance water safety, and even lay the groundworks for straightforward future maintenance.
Reducing installation complexity
From carrying out maintenance work to installing new appliances, installers will regularly need to control the flow of water within a system. Of course, valves make it possible to isolate specific parts of a system, as well as individual appliances. However, many systems – particularly older installations – won’t have these essential control valves installed.
Push-fit technology makes it possible to quickly and easily introduce these valves to systems, reducing complexity and disruption on jobs.
Solutions such as the JG Speedfit Appliance Tap make it possible to isolate appliances quickly and easily. When working with existing pipework for example, but replacing appliances, the tap can be pushed onto the pipe to allow for easy installation – even in tight spaces where pipework is tricky to reach. Similarly, the JG Speedfit Tool-free Service Valve simplifies the connection of appliances to the water supply, while a tool-free open/close service valve makes isolation easy with the turn of a handle.
Elevate water safety
On every system, installers need to consider – and prioritise –safety for end users. Backflow prevention is an essential part of this, and having the right solutions to hand can make all the difference.
Backflow typically stems from a sudden drop in pressure within a system. In a domestic environment, this could be as a result of a burst pipe or a malfunctioning appliance, and when it occurs contaminated water can be drawn back into the system, creating unwanted backflow.
The good news is that contamination from backflow can be prevented with the right solutions installed by professionals. The Double Check Valve from the Extended Range prevents backflow, ensuring the consistent flow of water in one direction to stop any contamination of the system.
Planning for maintenance
All good plumbing systems should stand the test of time, giving users complete peace of mind that they’ll be able to access water reliably and safely for years to come. To make this possible, maintenance is key – and the right solutions help installers to plan for future maintenance from the very beginning.
The extended range offers a variety of solutions that support future maintenance. Whether it’s the Emergency Shut-off Tap or Stop Valve to ensure the easy isolation of appliances from the water supply, or the Service Valve which can be used on copper and plastic pipework to support future maintenance, the Extended Range has a solution for every installation.
With every solution built around tried and trusted push-fit technology, plumbing and heating installers can be confident in their ability to deliver on every job.
on THE PRESSURE IS
Research by Salamander Pumps shows 40 per cent of homeowners experience low water pressure daily. This can occur following remodelling works. Mike Oxley, technical training manager for Salamander Pumps, explores why and what solutions can help builders navigate the challenge.
What impacts water flow?
Water flow is the volume of water that comes from an outlet over a specific period of time while pressure is the force pushing it through the pipes. Many homes will experience low water flow, resulting in slow running taps and showers. Similarly, appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, may not deliver the required results.
Demand is a significant factor behind why households experience low water pressure and flow. This can be internal demand, such as multiple outlets running simultaneously thereby exceeding the mains capacity. Externally, mains water demands throughout an entire street or neighbourhood, especially during peak periods in the morning or early evening can create challenges.
It is also common for households to experience low water pressure and flow following remodelling works, which is an important area for professional builders to understand to avoid uncomfortable customer conversations.
Post renovation Regulations exist which influence water pressure and flow. For example, UK Building Regulations (Part G) advises balanced pipe sizing to ensure efficient water delivery without pressure loss or excessive stagnation to reduce bacterial growth. However, post-renovation challenges do occur. These can relate to increasing household water demand if the number of outlets increases, whether that is a kitchen upgrade, bathroom remodelling or an en-suite installation.
Material factors around remodelling works such as pipe material, size, the number of fittings, valves and turns can further contribute to low water flow being experienced. Lengthy pipe runs creates friction and decreases water pressure and flow rates, whereas oversized pipework can slow water movement and increase the risk of stagnation.
Undersized pipes can create excessive pressure drops and adding turns to the pipework system can potentially increase friction. Even modern tap fittings can pose
challenges, especially if they are designed only for high pressure systems or are restrictive by their nature, which today is a common feature.
There can be additional complexities with loft conversions too when they include a new en-suite. Installing outlets higher in the home usually means more water pressure is needed to reach the top floor, and pressure will drop with each floor.
Getting proactive with water measurements
Before kicking off renovation works, it is important to map water demands. Water demand requirements can be calculated using the method in BS EN 806-3. This allocates loading units based on flow rates at draw off points, length of time appliances are in use and frequency of use.
When looking at the fixtures and fittings which will make up the renovation works, it is important for builders to always check manufacturer specifications for minimum flow and pressure requirements.
These pre-installation checks are vital, and can be accessed through tools such as digital water multimeters including AquaScan. Without adequate flow and pressure rates, even the highest quality appliances may underperform, leading to customer dissatisfaction and potential system failures.
Exploring retrofit solutions
Having mapped water demands and how they align with renovation projects, there’s a portfolio of water boosting solutions to ensure that low pressure and flow does not create issues.
With individual problematic outlets, single outlet inline water boosting pumps such as TapBoost are recommended. Solutions like this are easy to install, effective, non-intrusive and cost-efficient and can overcome the water flow challenges posed by renovation works.
These pumps, which can be retrofitted, boost single outlets in both bathroom and kitchen remodelling projects, including those which may be suffering with a poor flow due to any work undertaken. TapBoost improves water flow in single outlets to between 7-11 L/min depending on the pump’s incoming flow rate. For example, with incoming flows of 1 L/min,
“Without adequate flow and pressure rates, even the highest quality appliances may underperform”
while an 8 L/min flow will experience a boost of 25 per cent.
As versatility is a significant asset to builders for renovation works, single outlet inline pumps are available for a range of applications such kitchen tap, bath tap, toilet cistern, dishwasher or washing machine.
Other solutions include a traditional shower pump to boost water performance
recommended in this instance.
For mains-fed larger properties with high water consumption and are reliant on supplier pressures, there is a high risk of challenges, especially on upper floors. In this situation, storage tank booster solutions are available such as TankBoost. This combines stored water with an integrated pump, boosting multiple outlets across multiple floors up to 3 bar and 80L/min.
Low water pressure and flow is a constant challenge facing households. However, by acknowledging risks and navigating water-boosting products correctly, there is no reason why builders should be leaving their customers dissatisfied.

FITTING REMARKS
Forecasts shared by the Construction Products Association earlier this year suggest industry output is set to grow in 2025, with gradual recovery across all sectors, but particularly in private housing new build, and repair, maintenance and improvement, which have faced two particularly challenging years.
While this is positive news for installers, the persistent issue of the skills shortage looms large, threatening to put increased time and resource pressure on those who might soon see their order books fill up. Fortunately, leading manufacturers are responding with innovative products designed to simplify installation processes and reduce time spent on-site.
Rachel Tuckey, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Häfele UK looks at the innovations unlocking efficiency for installers
Installer-led innovations
Utensio is Häfele’s first-ever own-brand collection of in-cabinet storage solutions. Designed to blend style and elegance with intelligent, thoughtful functionality, the range features larder pull-outs, corner and base storage and the UK’s largest capacity integrated bin solution, as well as
a wealth of other bin options.
The entire Utensio range is suitable for new installs, or as part of a retrofit renovation. Importantly for installers, it comes with a fitting kit which makes the installation process simpler than anything else on the market.
Wanting to ensure the perfect fit every time, Häfele’s has developed clear-tofollow, picture-led installation instructions, which are supported by time-saving card templates. They include pre-cut holes for the installer to tape the template in the exact position required, and precise guidelines on where drill holes should be made. This eliminates the need for measuring and narrows the margin of error to almost zero, offering significant efficiency and accuracy benefits.
Our aim was to produce fitting instructions that are sympathetic to the challenges installers face each and every time they kit out cabinets with their internal storage solutions – and we believe they’ll be truly game changing.
One tool, multiple uses
Designed to address various installation challenges, Häfele’s UC 16/64 is a true example of a multipurpose tool. A problem solver for any building project, the polycarbonate connection device combines snap-in studs and clips with a latching nose and screw holes, making it suitable for a range of applications, from corner and surface connections to angled and double joints. It can also be used as an assembly aid, cable guide, spacer, and floor guide.
By combining several types of installation needs into one, it removes the need for multiple separate connectors, saving time, space in the toolbox, and cost. It’s truly versatile but also offers invaluable efficiencies for installers working to streamline their processes.
Considered,
purposeful design
There’s more where that came from when it comes to Häfele’s range of fixtures and fittings. The IXConnect SC 8/25, for example, is a one-piece connector that requires no glue, dowels or tools to install. Simple in design and entirely concealed once complete, the connector has been developed to dramatically improve furniture manufacturing, by offering a simple and efficient ‘plug and push’ process. To use, installers must simply
synchronously expand in the drill hole. Used for cabinets, small furniture items, and drawers, the connectors feature a fixed concealed connection, which means the panels won’t come apart.
Likewise, our iconic Minifix enables installers to quickly create 90-degree mitre joints with ease and is completely concealed when installed. This unique connector – of which we produce 3.2 million each day – is a patented design, based on the principle of having a hemispherical head.
Ergonomic efficiencies
As well as thinking about ways to make it easier to achieve a high-quality finish quicker, we’re also helping installers to make lighter work of tasks.
Levelling cabinetry can be, quite
adjusting and fitting systems like Axilo™ by Häfele, that needn’t be the case.
Ergonomically designed, it reduces the risk of back-related injuries and can cut kitchen unit assembly times by almost half. Again, simple tools like this are a great way to improve on-the-job efficiency and enable installers to get through more work in less time.
Time saving services
Alongside time saving products, we’ve also developed a wealth of services that reduce a lot of leg work for installers.
Service+ is our suite of services all designed to save time and increase efficiency. Through Service+ Customised, installers can specify products to exact sizes, quantity and finish, which are then delivered cut to exact measurements and pre-assembled as required. While customers regularly use this service for items such as wardrobe rails or sliding door gear, installers can also use Service+ Customised for bespoke products, including handmade timber drawers, which can be personalised to a customer’s design and come complete with full dovetail joints, usually in just a two-week turnaround.
For installers facing tight schedules and a shortage of personnel, it’s crucial to select products from proactive and customer-focused manufacturers who are consistently innovating with installers in mind. By choosing manufacturers who prioritise time-saving products and services, installers can increase their efficiency on site while still upholding the highest standards in what looks set to be a busy market.
A SNUG FIT
Professional Bu ilder catches up with the latest product in the PipeSnug and FlueSnug range – the FS5.
When retrofitting heating systems, you often find a familiar set of challenges: drilling new flue holes, sealing around existing pipework and compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations. It can be time-consuming and messy and older buildings in particular present difficulties, as they weren’t designed with today’s airtight, energy-efficient standards in mind.
Gaps around pipe penetrations allow warm air to escape and cold air to filter in, forcing heating systems to work harder and increasing energy bills for homeowners. For years, installers have relied on mortar, silicone or air-sealing tape to seal around flue pipes, but these traditional methods come with drawbacks. Mortar can crack over time, sealants degrade and air-sealing tape can be costly and fiddly to apply. This is why Part L now mandates the use of pipe seals and grommets to reduce air loss and improve insulation.
“One of the most frustrating aspects of retrofitting a boiler is getting the flue to align with the existing hole; if the new flue is even slightly off, it often means having to drill out a larger opening or use filler to compensate which means extra time, effort and cost. This is where the ‘FS5’ comes in,” explains Dean Heathfield,
existing flue opening, making flue replacements faster, neater and fully compliant with the latest Building Regulations. Installers can simply slot the FS5 into place and quickly secure the new flue without the need for mortar, sealant or patching, speeding up installations and reducing disruption for both the installer and the homeowner.”
Meeting regulations
Under the latest Part L regulations, all new boiler installations must have properly sealed pipe penetrations to prevent heat loss, achieved by using collars or grommets. Talon says fitting the FS5 means installers easily meet these regulations. It provides a tight, durable seal around the flue, helping maintain the building’s energy performance while keeping installation times to a minimum.
“A clean, professional finish is a hallmark of quality workmanship, leaving a lasting impression on clients and ensuring a job well done,” continues Dean.
patchwork can make even the best installation look untidy, which is why finding the right solution for sealing flues is essential. The FS5 helps installers achieve a clean, high-quality finish; there’s no need for core drilling or resizing holes, filling in gaps with mortar or sealant or touching up or repairing wall surfaces. Instead, the FS5 just leaves a neat, professional finish with no mess or waste.”
Boiler flues need regular inspections and servicing to ensure they are working safely. With traditional sealing methods like mortar or sealant, servicing can be tricky and messy, as installers may have to remove and then reapply materials to access the flue. The process is simpler with the FS5 as it can be removed and replaced without damaging the seal, allowing for quick and easy servicing.
Retrofitting heating systems comes with its fair share of challenges, from sealing around existing pipework to ensuring compliance with the latest regulations. Installers need solutions that not only make the job easier but also improve energy efficiency and reduce disruption for homeowners. Smarter solutions can save time, reduce costs, improve safety and ensure compliance, giving both installers and homeowners peace of mind.
YOU KNOW THE DRILL
In the first in a series of videos sponsored by Admiral Business Insurance – and available to watch now on the ProBuilder YouTube channel –Alex from Errioc Carpentry puts the Makita XGT Combi Drill through its paces
You’d be hard pressed to find anything more common on a building site than a trusty combi drill and it’s an essential part of any tradies kit, so it’s important to choose carefully.
Built to last
The first feature on the XGT Combi Drill to draw Alex’s eye is the all-metal chuck: “With this drill being very high-powered, you could see yourself in a lot of big, messy, dirty situations. The metal chuck is durable, hard wearing, and it’s not going to wear and tear like a plastic one. Putting this drill through its paces, on say big timbers, with constant drilling, you want to make sure it’s a good chuck at the front to really keep that drill doing what it’s meant to be doing – heavy duty work.”
Makita has continued that hardwearing mindset by removing the clutch numbers on the chuck. Adam explains that the digital clutch now sits at the bottom of the drill. With an easy to read display and spinning wheel, the operator can adjust the clutch setting from 1 to 21, with a lock button to keep it set.
“With numbers written on the clutch, over time they could wear away making it a lot more difficult to see what number you need. With a digital read-out, you don’t have that issue anymore.”
The robust nature of Makita’s XGT Combi Drill doesn’t stop there either. The
drill is built using XPT (Extreme Protection Technology) – a protective seal inside the tool engineered to provide improved water resistance by channelling water and dust from the tool’s key internal components.
High performance
The use of Makita’s XGT batteries are also a stand out of the Combi Drill in Adam’s eyes. The XGT system is more powerful, offering a maximum of 40V. Indeed, Adam shows off this power by using the drill on a thick piece of C24

treated timber, which it manages with ease. The XGT platform also has a battery protection system, which automatically shuts off the power when the battery level is low, meaning more runtime.
Active feedback is present in the drill too, which will shut off the engine if the drill’s rotation is suddenly stopped. This prevents injury or damage to materials if the drill gets stuck.
Accessories
A grip assembly can also be used with the Combi Drill and Adam shows us how this works. With a rotating handle, the assembly easily attaches to the drill body, providing another handhold for the user. With this, the operator can benefit from greater stability when drilling into tougher substrates. An adjustable stopper pole also attaches onto this, working as a depth gauge for those tricky specific applications. Adam attaches this too and shows how it works with a soft nose so as not to damage the surface.
LINE OF DEFENCE
Hard work takes its toll. From pressure on your knees to hours in the sun, you can protect yourself against the risks that creep up unnoticed with the right workwear from Carhartt.
Construction work demands a lot from your body. Long hours kneeling, bending, lifting and working outdoors in all weather conditions comes with the territory. But while most tradespeople are well aware of the obvious risks like heavy lifting and sharp tools, it’s easy to overlook two hazards that can cause long-term harm: joint strain and sun exposure. Both can creep up gradually but the effects over time can be serious. Fortunately, with the right approach and the right workwear, it’s simple to reduce the risk and stay safer on site.
Whatever your trade, there’s no avoiding time spent on your knees. Unfortunately, repeated kneeling, crawling and squatting takes its toll on the knee joints, often leading to injuries over time. According to the HSE, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the most reported injuries in the industry, with lower limb and knee problems particularly common.
Repetitive strain, pressure on hard surfaces, awkward postures and constant movement can lead to conditions like knee bursitis, meniscus tears and even osteoarthritis. The problem is, many
workers accept knee pain as part of the job, soldiering on until the damage becomes too hard to ignore. But longterm damage isn’t inevitable. Simple preventative measures, particularly proper knee protection, can make a significant difference. Using high-quality kneepads helps spread pressure evenly, reducing strain on the joint and protecting against sharp objects or hard surfaces.
A practical solution
Carhartt’s Interoperable Kneepads offer a practical solution. Certified to EN 144044:2024, they’re strong and comfortable, made from lightweight polyethylene foam to cushion the knees without restricting movement. They slot easily into a range of Carhartt’s Steel Pants and Dungarees to give secure, reliable protection throughout the day. Investing in proper kneepads keeps joints protected and reduces the risk of more serious injuries developing over time so you can stay on the job without discomfort holding you back.
Joint strain may be more immediately noticeable, but working outdoors carries another risk that is often underestimated – UV exposure. Many construction
workers spend long hours outside, yearround, often without realising how much UV radiation they are absorbing.
The issue isn’t confined to hot days or clear skies. Despite our often dreary or cool weather, UV rays in the UK are still strong enough to cause skin damage from early spring through to autumn, even when it’s cloudy. These rays penetrate cloud cover and can cause serious skin damage over time; long-term exposure increases the risk of premature ageing, skin cancer and other health issues. For anyone spending regular hours outdoors, protecting skin is as important as any other PPE.
Fortunately, preventing sun damage is straightforward. The first step is to apply sunscreen – it should be part of every outdoor worker’s routine. A broadspectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 offers good protection, but it’s important to reapply regularly, particularly after sweating or wiping dust and dirt away. Hydration is also important. Working under the sun, even in cooler temperatures, leads to fluid loss which can affect concentration and overall wellbeing. Drinking water regularly
throughout the day helps counteract this.
Clothing obviously plays one a really important role in protecting skin but not all fabrics offer the same level of UV protection – a typical cotton T-shirt has a sun protection factor (UPF) of just 5, allowing a large amount of UV radiation to pass through to the skin. Long-sleeved tops, high-neck shirts and long trousers offer good coverage, especially when made from tightly woven fabrics that block more UV rays than looser weaves. But this kind of workwear can feel heavy, restrictive or too hot.
It’s important to find clothing that balances protection with comfort and Carhartt’s Sun Defender™ range is specifically designed to address this balance. Offering UPF 40+ protection, the range includes lightweight, breathable long-sleeved tops, t-shirts and trousers. Sweat-wicking Force® technology and FastDry® quick-drying fabrics keep you dry, comfortable and reduce the chance of odour throughout long shifts.
“Health and safety measures on site are second nature when it comes to hzards like heavy machinery or working at height. But safeguarding yourself against gradual, long-term risks is just as important.”
Eye protection
protection will help prevent long-term damage. Wraparound designs with built-in UV filters offer the most effective coverage. Carhartt’s range of wraparound safety glasses, available in various lens colours to suit different site conditions, are made from lightweight polycarbonate that naturally blocks nearly the entire UV spectrum and provides reliable protection for your eyes throughout the day.
Health and safety measures on site are second nature when it comes to hazards
like heavy machinery or working at height. But safeguarding yourself against gradual, long-term risks is just as important. Protecting your joints with the right kneepads, using sun-safe clothing and sunscreen and staying hydrated are straightforward steps that can prevent injuries and illnesses and keep you fit for the job both now and in the years to come.
THINK FIT!
We all know that building sites can be unforgiving environments. You can be braving the worst of the elements, on uncertain terrain, with multiple hazards to manoeuvre. That’s why anything that can make you a mite more comfortable will always be welcome, and the foundation of your physical well-being should always be your footwear. Boots that support your plates of meat in all the right places, keep them warm, dry and protected, will certainly give you a spring in your step.
Choosing boots or safety trainers equipped with the BOA fit system can equally make a telling contribution to happy feet. It’s a technology that has made the transition from the world of high-performance athletes, including elite cyclists and skiers, to tradespeople.
So just how does it work? Like all the best inventions it really is simplicity itself. Push the dial in, turn and you’ve got the perfect fit, when you want to take your boots off then pull the dial up for a quick release. It’s far more precise than a double knot can ever be, not to mention considerably faster, and you’re no longer at the mercy of lace ties that can become clogged with muck. You can even take them on and off with gloves on.
We let plasterer; Brian Jones step out
in style in a pair of Solid Gear Tigris GTX AG Mid boots equipped with the BOA Fit System. This is high end footwear with myriad features. Whilst they look like they’re engineered for a war zone, these boots feel as light as ballet slippers. A rugged grip will keep you upright in the kind of conditions where Bambi came a cropper, whilst CORDURA and GORE-TEX provide durability and breathability respectively.
“It’s like giving your feet a warm hug,” enthuses the Herts-based spreader. “These boots have already got loads of cushioning, but the BOA Fit System makes sure that your heel and midsole
home and that’s much more easily done in these.”
If you’re thinking that this is an overengineered solution that’s on an inevitable path to failure then think again.
The manufacturer promises that the BOA Fit System is designed to be opened and closed 5,500 times, which is the equivalent of taking your shoes on and off daily for 15 years.
“I don’t really want to take them off again,” purrs a very happy Brian. “Having said that, they’re so easy to get on and off that it won’t be a problem either.”

A FAIR DEAL
Worried about leasing a van because of the Fair Wear and Tear Policy? You shouldn’t be. Leasing gives you the latest vans with modern tech and efficiency at a lower cost. Rather than a large upfront cost, you pay manageable monthly instalments.
The best part? You’re only paying for the van’s value at the end of your contract, after depreciation. At the end of your contract, simply return the van and upgrade. Maximum value, minimum hassle. But what happens when your van inevitably picks up some scrapes along the way? That’s where the Fair Wear and Tear Policy comes in.
Fair wear & tear: what it really means
You’ve probably heard of this policy before, and no, it’s not as scary as it sounds. It’s a set of guidelines that funders follow, outlining what level of wear is considered acceptable when you return your van – and what might incur additional charges. These guidelines protect you too, ensuring transparency
and preventing unexpected charges at the end.
A van isn’t just transport; it’s a mobile toolbox, workshop, and sometimes office. Builders, plumbers, electricians –your van is central to your livelihood, which means it’s going to take a few knocks. Worksites aren’t spotless, and neither will your van be. The Fair Wear and Tear Policy acknowledges this.
A few dings from loading materials? Normal. A couple of scratches from tools? Expected. A huge dent from reversing into a bollard? That might cost you. By following the policy, you’ll know exactly what kind of damage is acceptable and what could result in a repair fee, so there are no surprises when you hand the van back.
Ply lining: the built-in armour
Wouldn’t it be handy if your van had builtin protection? Well, it does. When you lease a van, it comes ply lined as standard, adding an extra layer of defence to the inside of your vehicle.
• Heavy tools? No problem. Ply lining prevents internal damage.
• Shifting cargo? Sorted. The lining absorbs impact.
If you’re on a finance lease, keeping wear and tear to a minimum means a better resale value. But we’ll get into this more in the next section. Your van needs to be practical, not pristine –but a bit of protection can go a long way.
Your van, your reputation
On a finance lease? A well-kept van boosts resale value. The better the condition, the more you can get back when the contract ends. But it’s not just about resale. It’s about your business.
Research from Lex Autolease shows nearly nine out of 10 consumers believe tradespeople should care more about their vans. 63% of customers said poor van condition would stop them from rehiring, while 40% associate neglected vans with bad service or being “ripped off.”
On the other hand, a well-maintained van signals reliability, with 38% of customers linking newer vans to professionalism. Your van doesn’t need to be perfect, but a little care goes a long way – for both your reputation and resale value.
Even better? Add sign-writing to your lease van. Why not make the most of your time stuck in traffic by advertising your business? Just make sure it can be safely removed at the end of the lease without causing damage.
Tool storage: more protection, more security
Want extra protection? Consider adding tool storage. Racking keeps everything organised – no more rummaging for that one specific screw mid-job. Plus, keeping everything in place prevents unnecessary damage to your van’s interior (and stops your gear from sliding around every time you turn or brake).
Even better? Tool stores. Security is a big concern when your livelihood is stored in the back of your van. Many tool stores come with built-in locking mechanisms, giving you peace of mind that your expensive kit is safe from prying hands. Just remember that anything installed to your lease van can’t cause permanent damage and must be removed before you hand it back at the end of your contract.
Leasing: the smart choice
• Lower upfront costs – Free up cash for your business.
• Latest vans with cutting-edge tech & security – Stay ahead of the game.
• Tax benefits – Many businesses can reclaim VAT on lease payments.
Vans are built to work hard. Just like you. They’re tough, durable, and made to withstand the demands of the job. And so is the Fair Wear and Tear Policy. So, whether you’re navigating a muddy site, transporting heavy tools, or just going about your daily graft, leasing lets you focus on the job at hand –without sweating the small stuff. Because let’s face it, builders are businessmen too.

builders’ vehicles
If
the thought of owning an electric vehicle is still a shock to the system, then let Professional Builder be your guide with our Toyota Professional Proace City Electric long-term loan
ACE IT!
Builder will be living with the Toyota Professional Proace City Electric and considering key features with each instalment. Given that it remains the biggest single source of anxiety for any prospective EV owner, range and charging seems the sensible place to begin our journey.
Here at Professional Builder we have been lucky enough to have driven and reviewed a good many electric vehicles. The argument that we have consistently put forward is that many local jobbing
and a bite to eat besides. Studies have, in fact, shown that drivers routinely overestimate the miles they drive, a reality
Open range
The Toyota Proace City’s 50kW battery provides a headline figure of 208 miles from a single full charge. Of course, there are caveats here, because the real-world number can vary quite widely depending on the payload, temperature, and driving style. EVs are the opposite of their diesel counterparts in that they are more efficient in traffic than on motorways, for example. It is in the former stop/start driving conditions that energy recovery systems come into their own, where some charge is clawed back when braking, for instance. In addition, battery electric vehicles don’t much care for the cold.
Nonetheless it’s conceivable that some tradespeople could get away with only charging the vehicle once a week. If you have an EV charging point at home, and you take advantage of cheaper overnight tariffs, then the numbers start to add up.
The Toyota Proace City is actually equipped with a timed charging function – that allows you to plug the vehicle in
VEHICLES & PLANT
1-2 T MINI EXCAVATORS
The new generation of Bobcat 1-2 t mini excavators includes the E16, E17z, E19 and E20z models. The units enjoy an upgraded engine and a hydraulic system that allows operators to smoothly operate multiple functions simultaneously. A cab usually found on larger Bobcat diggers also delivers enhanced levels of comfort.

and then delay charging – with the simple press of a button next to the vehicle’s charging port.
From a home or office supply it will fully charge in around 4 ½ hours. From a fast-charging public facility, however, you can reach 0-80% in approximately 32 minutes. EV infrastructure is rapidly expanding with the likes of supermarkets, and public car parks adding to service stations in the available choice. The app and digital services that resources like Zapmap provide will not only tell you were the nearest place to charge is but also whether they’re occupied, as well as pricing. The Toyota Proace also has a built-in system that will identify suitable charging points via the touchscreen infotainment system.
There are three driving modes to choose from on the Proace City, each of which can be selected via the centre console. We will be exploring the experience at the wheel in more detail in a future edition, suffice to say here that selecting ECO will conserve battery power – albeit at the expense of some performance and comfort features.
Even when taking into account recent increases in energy prices, the running costs of EVs are lower than diesel or petrol and there’s also reduced maintenance expenditure. Toyota does provide a cost calculator to prove just that on its website and one of the dealers from its extensive network will equally be able to walk you through the economics.
Granted, the initial purchase price might be higher, and it is here that leasing could be a good option. Owning an EV will require a modicum of forward planning, and you’ll need to get to know the vehicle so you can gauge just how you can get the most out of it, but there is no sense in which it should impede your mobility.
In the next issue we’ll take a look at one of the big ticks for EVs and that’s their performance on the road.
KIA VAN
The exterior design of the Kia PV5 Cargo van has been unveiled. Its makers describe it as a bold and futuristic look, with black geometric wheel arch claddings and rocker panels. The corners of the sturdy lower bumper are interchangeable, serving both aesthetic and protective functions. The PV5 also features a single lift-up tailgate door.
MICRO-EXCAVATOR
It’s the hydraulically adjustable undercarriage (745–1,100 mm) on the SANY SY10U micro-excavator that makes it ideal for fitting through standard doorways and working in confined garden spaces. Power comes from a diesel engine delivering 8.8 kW at 2,200 rpm. A digital code system affords the peace of mind of theft protection.
BATTERY ELECTRIC
An electrified construction site is Wacker Neuson’s ambition, and the manufacturer continues to add to its battery powered solutions. Its zeroemission E-excavator line-up has been expanded with two new machines. The EZ26e has a 2.3 tonne payload and EZ10e features just under a tonne. Together with the EZ17e, a total of three fully electric excavators are now available.

Professional Builder is committed to promoting openness about mental health and providing information to support its readers. Last month’s column looked at the importance of being aware of others and not being afraid of checking in to ask if they are doing ok or if they might need some help.
Maybe that column pushed someone to reach out to a friend or family member they had been worried about. Maybe in the future one person will remember something that was written in one of these articles and use it to help themselves or someone else. Sometimes you read something, or skip over it, as it doesn’t apply to you. The next time you read it, you might be in a completely different situation. All it takes sometimes is one person, doing one thing, to make a difference to a life.
We are still talking about suicide because it’s an issue that won’t go away. Let’s take a moment to look at some statistics which highlight the scale of this problem. In the UK, the most recent data from 2023 shows that there were 7,055 deaths by suicide (that’s an average of 19 people per day). Men are three times as likely to die from suicide than women. Data from the Office of National Statistics shows that workers in the construction industry (skilled trades occupations) are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average. Every working day in the UK, two construction workers take their own life.
Construction can be a very rewarding industry to work in. However, it also has certain factors which contribute to poor mental health and lower overall wellness. These factors are known to be detrimental to the mental health of workers:
• Working long hours with poor work/life balance
• Lengthy commutes
• Working away from family
• Limited term contracts
• Uncertainty of next job
• Pressure to complete work on time and
within budget
• Late payments causing financial problems
THIS MONTH GP ALICE FITZGIBBON CONTINUES THE CONVERSATION ABOUT SUICIDE
industry’s, expectations and traditional gender roles which may lead them to be less likely to seek support in fear of judgement.
Twice I have written “engaging with help can be hard”. Initially I wrote “seeking help” but I realised that progress has meant we don’t need to look as far for help as we used to. It is the act of engaging that presents the challenge, facing the reality of feelings and putting our vulnerabilities out there. Sharing the problem can really help whether that be with family and friends or professionals from mental health charities or your GP.
• The persistence of ‘macho’ culture and perceived stigma of mental health issues
Looking at this list it can be quite easy to see how these issues may pile up and cause significant levels of stress. If it is happening to you, you can be sure you are not alone in feeling the effects of these pressures. They are very valid. Recognising the impact of these factors on your mental health and acknowledging there may be an issue with how you are coping with them is a really important step. But engaging with help can be hard. Construction is a male dominated industry. Suicide is a male dominated issue. It is proven that seeking mental health support prevents deaths due to suicide. But engaging with help can be hard. It can be hard for men and for women, but we recognise that particularly men are affected by society, and the
