personal best

It is often the case that tradespeople consider safety equipment and PPE as a hindrance rather than an essential part of the job. Working from a ladder for an extended period instead of erecting a scaffold platform or tower looks like a time saver. Adding more layers, such as hi vis, is not an attractive proposition, particularly in the summer months, and cutting a few roof tiles or bricks without wearing a mask can’t do much harm.

It is in the last of these scenarios –where the threats are cumulative, and might not be felt for many years, where complacency creeps in. Kneeling on a hard surface for just a moment or lifting a heavy load without adhering to the proper technique, is certainly not a guarantee of debilitating injury but add all those instances together and bursitis or lower back pain will follow. Sadly, no matter which part of the body is impacted, once the damage is done there’s rarely any going back – and a lifetime of discomfort is your destiny.

Last month the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) is launching a PPE Saves campaign, details of which can be found on page 8 of this edition. The not-for-profit organisation is championing protection of every class, whether that is safety glasses, gloves, noise abatement technologies or the correct footwear.

were scrutinised were served enforcement notices – and there’s no reason to conclude that the culture has changed in the intervening years. Paradoxically, it is the self-employed who will suffer the most if the worst does happen. If you’re not working, you’re not earning. Accident and injury insurance cover is still not taken out by the majority of builders, and if it’s one of your employees who is the victim then the potential legal action can be ruinous.

On larger sites the entire project is now locked down, with evidence of PPE demanded. Every individual, even visitors, are required to undertake site inductions and, whilst accidents and even fatalities do still occur, considerable improvements have been made. It is worth pondering on whether an injury you or a fellow builder suffered previously could not have been prevented by following the same precepts and adding a layer of protection about your person?

“From safety boots to hard hats, tradespeople can access PPE or working at height equipment that has been develoed with advanced technologies”

It’s an issue that should resonate with local jobbing builders because it is at this level of the industry that non-compliance is most glaring. In the days when the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) enjoyed greater funding it undertook an annual campaign that targeted repair, maintenance and improvement projects, including the likes of extensions and loft conversions. These are the kind of jobs where the chances of a visit from an inspector would ordinarily be vanishingly small – a fact that that was reflected in the results.

At that time nearly half of the sites that

Once you have taken the decision to play it safe, the journey doesn’t end there either. It’s then essential that a reputable supplier is sourced. The Ladder Association continues to highlight the number of unsafe working at height solutions purchased from some of the world’s largest online platforms. Not only do these fail to comply with the necessary regulations, what is more worrying is that – in order to deceive unwitting consumers – they are falsely labelled with the correct certification. The answer, of course, is to obtain your PPE from retailers you can trust and that includes your local builders’ merchant.

Today, tradespeople can access workwear, PPE or working at height equipment that has been developed with advanced technologies. From safety boots to hard hats and everything in between, PPE is more comfortable and fit for purpose than ever before. If you choose not to partake of it then regret is not the only pain you run the risk of experiencing.

launches “PPE Saves” campaign

The campaign spotlights the vital role PPE performes in protecting workers and urges organisations to involve their employees when selecting safety critical products.

It stresses that properly specified, well-fitting, and high-quality PPE not only enhances safety but also allows workers to carry out their jobs effectively and remain in the industries they enjoy for longer.

Commenting on the launch of “PPE Saves”, BSIF CEO Alan Murray says: “PPE is vital for protecting lives across Britain every single day. But not all PPE performs well, and that’s a serious problem. “PPE Saves” is a campaign dedicated to making sure workers have access to suitable and reliable PPE because investing in quality products isn’t just about safety, it shows you value your people.”

Paul Kitterman, a builders’ merchant employee who was left paralysed from the waist down in 2021 because of a spinal abscess, has been sleeping in the dining room of his Addlestone home with only a curtain for privacy (and no toilet or washing facilities). Thanks to volunteer tradespeople with national construction charity Band of Builders (BoB), he now has a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom extension.

Faulty equipment or tools named as the most common cause of injuries suffered by tradespeople while on the job

This comes from a new study by Markel Direct, the specialist insurer of tradespeople, which asked over 300 tradespeople about the impact of workplace injuries and illness.

44% of tradespeople reported that “faulty equipment or tools” was the reason for their injuries in the workplace, whilst other reasons given were “Lack of PPE” (38%) and “Poor safety regulations on site” (36%).

The survey revealed that 63% of respondents are now willing to travel 31.7 miles further for work than when they started in their current job.

The main reasons behind this trend include access to more opportunities, less competition, and the potential for higher pay.

IT’S SPRAY TIME!

Anthony Wade is a painter & decorator with a passion for both sustainability and quality. Professional Builder talks to a tradesman who is pioneering eco conscious working practices.

I’ve spent a lifetime thinking about how I can improve upon what’s already out there and tinkering with techniques to make them better,” explains this enthusiastic advocate for environmentally friendly methods. What sets Anthony Wade apart, is the lengths this award-winning tradesman has gone to put his principles into practice.

The founder of Sprayform Painting & Decorating, can point to 34 years of experience and, throughout his long career, has consistently championed all the latest technologies. The 59-year-old was an early adopter of spray applied paint, for example, and has even built his own machines.

“I’ve always gone after high end, premium jobs and my ethos has been to strive to do as good a job as I can,” Anthony explains. “If in the process I can help the industry improve and think about its own practices that would be great. When I started spraying in the ‘90s, for instance, a lot of people thought it was pretty crazy. I recognised very quickly that it’s not only much quicker but does improve the finish. I’ve even built my own sprayers, including a model with a heater to improve the viscosity of the paint and help it flow much better.”

Anthony’s sustainability mission is to reduce the waste he generates to a minimum and having the right equipment is integral to achieving that goal. Indeed, if it doesn’t exist then he’ll build it himself, and that includes a water filtration plant of

“It’s about doing the right thing, of course, but I do believe that making it known that you are using quality eco-friendly products is going to help you win work from homeowners”

his own design that he constructed in his shed. “I switched to water-based paints because they’re better for the environment, the decorator and the homeowner. When people used to talk about the smell of fresh paint what they’re actually inhaling is chemicals – which is not good, and I do believe it’s improved my own health.”

War on waste

The Yorkshire decorator was equally concerned by how waste paint and contaminated water was being disposed of and has since taken matters into his own hands. As a result, the waste paint and water he uses on a job is taken back to his shed, where it is treated in his own unique and homemade water filtration unit. The process subjects the contaminated liquid and waste materials to multiples filters and, once complete, the water that runs clear can then be taken back to site.

“If I need any more water, it can be supplemented with rain that’s collected from a butt in the garden. I’m not using the client’s water on site, and I’m certainly not disposing of anything down a drain. The clean water and paint I use on a job is brought with me and the waste is taken away again. It really is the ultimate in recycling.”

For Anthony it’s a question of blending the old school with the new, by combining spray, roller and brush to create a quality finish. The current sprayer he favours is the Italian brand, Tecnover who produce a low-pressure unit that provides more control, whilst also saving on paint. Indeed, he likes the manufacturer’s solutions so much that he is now the UK distributer for its equipment.

It’s that level of commitment to his craft that has over the years earnt the proprietor of Sprayform Painting & Decorating no less than six industry accolades, most recently in the Small Contractor category at the Painting & Decorating Association (PDA) Premier Trophy Awards. He’s also proud to have given back to the industry by mentoring two award-winning apprentices.

“Joining the PDA does give you credibility and integrity as a contractor,” continues Anthony. “It helps you learn

more by meeting and networking with fellow decorators and you can be inspired by the work they’re undertaking. By taking part in awards, you’re stretching yourself to be as good as you can possibly be. It’s about pitting yourself against the best and raising your own game as a result.”

Similarly, the PDA’s Paint Green scheme encourages its members, and the industry, to step up to the sustainability challenge. With an estimated 55million litres of leftover paint produced annually, and only around two per cent of it being recycled, it’s an initiative that is desperately needed.

“It’s about doing the right thing, of course, but I do believe that making it known that you are using quality, ecofriendly products is going to help you win work from homeowners. It’s definitely a consideration for more and more clients.

“I’m 59 now and what I’d like to do is giving something back to the trade,” Anthony concludes: “If I can help train the next generation or advice or painting & decorating issues, I’ll be happy.”

Anthony processes all of his waste waterbased paint in a filtration unit of his own design that he built in his shed. He then resuses the water on site.

TRADE ASSOCIATION

ON CAMPAIGN

The Federation of Master Builders is championing the cause of SME contractors.

Brian Berry Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders outlines the current campaigns

The Government has hit the ground running in its attempt to deliver 1.5 million new homes and it’s a big task to achieve by 2029. We’ve seen action taken on the National Policy Planning Framework (NPPF) and the incoming Planning and Infrastructure Bill.

While these are decisive actions and will help roll out more homes, there are fundamental concerns still at play. The UK housing market is severely lacking in diversity, with around 90% of all homes delivered by volume developers, placing us completely out of sync with similar nations, who have a much more diverse market of custom build homes and smaller scale, local developers.

The UK wasn’t always this way. Just over thirty years ago, SME builders were responsible for 40% of all new homes built in Britain. Small builders can bring greater consumer choice, higher quality housing, and the ability to develop smaller sites that larger firms often overlook. If the Government is serious about delivering its housing ambitions, it must support SMEs by improving access to land and enabling a planning system that can help small developers through the process by cutting out the most byzantine elements.

Where are the builders?

Meeting housing targets will be impossible without addressing the UK’s construction skills crisis. Hundreds of thousands of extra builders will be required to deliver new homes and upgrade existing ones, yet this will not be feasible without a significant push to increase those entering the industry. The launch of the new agency ‘Skills England’ acknowledges that vocational skills need pushing, but it must work closely with industry to develop a long-term, structured plan for vocational training, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled professionals.

Upgrade existing homes

We also need to look beyond new housing. The Government has made some broad commitments to retrofit homes, but the owner occupier market, I fear, has been left with little to persuade homeowners to upgrade. Small builders will be at the forefront of delivering these upgrades, but a major obstacle remains. With few incentives for owner occupiers, this holds back interested builders from training in new green skills. This is why the FMB has been calling for financial incentives to increase consumer uptake and make fabric retrofitting a mainstream priority to boost the energy efficiency of homes.

Competence is key

While we seek to boost builders’ output, we must also ensure that quantity does not replace quality. Recent scandals, such as those installing shoddy spray foam insulation and has left homes unmortgageable brings this issue to light. At present, anyone can call themselves a builder, it’s not a protected job. This means there is nothing in place to ensure a minimum level of competence.

It is against this background that the FMB is championing the need for a licensing system for building companies, which would help elevate standards and drive out rogue traders. It’s encouraging that the Grenfell Tower inquiry report supports this drive, as has the RIBA. The FMB will be launching a new report in the House of Commons examining how licensing might operate so let’s hope it gets the attention it deserves.

There is lots of exciting and important work going on at the FMB. Small builders stand ready to tackle the challenges the construction sector faces. But they need support from decision makers and we’re here to back them all the way.

Retention: The team also keep in touch to make sure you have the support you need to help your apprentice achieve and become a fully-fledged employee on completion.

This level of support is already benefiting thousands of construction businesses –particularly SMEs – with 4,128 apprenticeship starts in the financial year 2024-25, an increase from 2,340 the previous year.

Deb Madden, Executive Director for Nations Engagement at CITB, says: “A strong pipeline of apprentices and construction workers is required to build the millions of homes and hundreds of infrastructure projects needed.

“The significant support employers receive through NEST is essential. It is all about giving employers access to handson, free support to help them with their apprentice recruitment and retention needs.”

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

EMERGENCY SERVICES

In A Jam is connecting property owners in distress with tradespeople who can come to their rescue.

In any given working week there are literally tens of thousands of emergency call outs to contractors where homeowners are desperate for repairs to be made to their properties. That represents a significant pool of potential work for plumbers, gas engineers, roofers, electricians and many more trades besides.

When Paul White, the eponymous proprietor of White’s Property Maintenance, was approached by a leading letting agent to handle emergency work for them the seed of an idea was planted and over the next two and half years it would develop into In A Jam, an easy-to-use app that can provide

24/7 repairs for the homeowner, and generate lucrative new work for tradespeople.

“There is a huge market for reactive maintenance out there,” explains the Portsmouth-based builder. “What we want to do is make it much easier for those in need of the service to access local firms

exactly when they are needed, to the benefit of both parties.”

So just how does it work? “All trades join free of charge with no subscription fee,” continues the 55-year-old. “Once you’re registered, and your profile is in place, you will be selected on the basis of a live geographical location you determine up to a maximum of 20 miles. So, if a homeowner has water coming through their ceiling, they can request an emergency call out on the app, and you’ll be notified if it’s in your area. At the same time, you can select the type of work you want from an extensive list, so if you only want to do plumbing, for example, then those are the works you’ll be notified of.”

“If you choose to accept the job you’ll be selected as the chosen tradesperson. By the same token you can immediately reject it with a simple push of a button. We’re charging the client £140 for the first hour and the tradie will receive £120 for that same time period, which will be paid into their bank account within 14 days.”

It’s not all but emergencies either

because homeowners can equally invite builders on the In A Jam app to quote for work. That can range from a loft conversion to fitting a radiator, with the trade member only paying a 5% commission if they secure the project. Moreover, a homeowner can request that a job be carried out at a particular time and date, and it’s then up to a builder in that area to either accept or decline. If it’s not convenient there’s no obligation to accept any work.

The benefits don’t stop there either because Paul’s brainchild is leveraging cloud-based technology in a bid to combat tool theft and help its victims see their property returned: “We have the facility to be able to store images of builder’s tools along with serial numbers. In the event of them being stolen, that information can then be extracted from the app and sent to the police.”

Miles better

Paul is well versed in the building industry and can point to 40 years of experience on the tools. He and the White’s Property Maintenance team will undertake everything from a full house build, to hanging a door –and everything in between. We caught up with the 55year-old at an extension and kitchen fitting job in Fareham, where he explained the sustainability benefits inherent in the In A Jam app.

“I’ve been on property maintenance call-outs myself when I’ve driven 40 or more miles to the repairs, and I’ve often thought there’s probably a chap around the corner who could have done this much easier than me, and could be getting on to a different job. At times the distances travelled can be absolute madness. Because we’re only allowing tradespeople to react to calls from homeowners from a maximum of 20 miles away it’s reducing the sector’s carbon footprint and making it more efficient.”

The builder’s In A Jam app profile can include, certificates, accreditations, proof of public liability insurance and so on, providing peace of mind to their potential client. Satisfied customers can score you on the app from 1 to 10 and we can service commercial clients, including shops and offices.”

“With more than four decades of experience I know exactly what the pain points are in the building trades,” Paul reveals. “The In a Jam app is designed to address some of those and it’s completely free to download and register.”

Need fast, reliable insurance? Let Superscript help.

You’re a master of your trade, but what insurance your business needs might be more of a mystery. Business insurance is not the kind of topic you relish researching, but it can prove a useful tool in your kit. That’s why we sat down with award-winning digital insurance broker, Superscript, to see how insurance can support your business and provide all-important peace of mind.

Based in the heart of the City of London, Superscript has over ten years’ experience supporting thousands of business types – including over 6,000 tradespeople – to get the right cover. “Micro and SME trade companies are at the heart of what we do, and our mission is to make the whole experience of finding cover as painless as possible,” explains Henry Newby, Partnerships Director at Superscript.

“As a commercial insurance broker, we can provide a very broad range of

products, including public liability, employers’ liability, contract works, tools and equipment, accident and sickness, professional indemnity and van insurance.”

What differentiates its approach is working with a range of insurance carriers, as Henry outlines. “If a tradesperson goes to a traditional broker or insurer, they are often presented with a packaged product from a single provider. We’ve deconstructed that approach to the benefit of the business owner.

“When you begin your quote journey with us, the individual components will often be underwritten by different insurers, but it’s all presented to you as a single Superscript proposition. It means you will get the best possible deal in each category – whether that’s public liability or accident and sickness – while only ever dealing with us as your one point of contact, with no additional admin.”

Superscript also have a dedicated in-

“The guiding principle is to make sure that a trade business has exactly the cover that they need through a fit and proper proposition”

house claims team who liaise with the insurance company on the customer’s behalf, managing the process from start to finish.

It takes an equally pioneering, modular approach to insurance, where the cover can change and evolve according to customer need, with fee-free policy adjustments. “If you think about the way the market has operated traditionally, the

ultimate outcome from the quote is a fixed annual contract,” adds Henry.

“A lot can change in 12 months, however, so we want our customers to be able to add and remove products, and that’s why we make it really simple to make changes. Our approach ensures that you know what you’ve got in place is appropriate for you and your business at any given moment in time.

“If you’ve taken on staff, you can, for example, add employers’ liability to what you already have. The beauty of our cover is that we can offer it on a temporary basis for employees who will be working 50 days or fewer. Similarly, if a builder secures a project where they will need a particular type of insurance, it can be put in place in minutes. Everything can be done digitally, so securing cover or making changes is very straightforward. With a good many builders undertaking business admin in the evenings after a day on site, that level of simplicity is priceless in protecting valuable leisure hours.”

Much of the cover offered is designed to support trades. Tools insurance can include the contents of your van if equipment is left inside overnight, for example. Superscript’s commitment to tradespeople is further underscored by its many partnerships, including with Checkatrade. To become a member of the lead generation site, you are required to demonstrate that you have public liability insurance, and Superscript is the

chosen provider.

In terms of types of cover, Superscript is seeing an increased take-up of tools and equipment cover, whilst accident and sickness is also popular. For the selfemployed, any significant spell off work can be financially devastating, so its appeal is obvious.

As a skilled tradesperson, you shouldn’t have to be an insurance expert as well. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of being over- or underinsured, or even paying for a level of cover that you simply don’t need, as Henry explains: “At every stage, the guiding principle is to make sure that a trade business has exactly what they need. We’re committed to a fit and proper proposition where tradespeople can have faith in a clear and simple policy. We’re proud to have a very high Trustpilot rating, and a lot of those reviews are related to claims.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON SUPERSCRIPT,

SMOOTH THE WAY

Stacey Booth, Head of Marketing & Portfolio at Okarno, looks at the options available for creating a smooth finish with plasterboard.

Wet plaster has been used for centuries and is known for its durability and smooth finish. The reality is that there are still many situations where plastering is irreplaceable, particularly for larger-scale repair, maintenance and improvement works or when dealing with listed or heritage buildings.

However, plasterboard continues to be a growing alternative due to it being quick to install, and it can provide additional thermal and acoustic benefits when looking at insulated options.

The key to a successful outcome with plasterboard is preparation and ensuring the joints are not visible. This is best achieved by using the right jointing compounds and tapes to prevent shrinkage and cracks from forming.

HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS FOR CREATING THIS SEAMLESS FINISH:

Joint fillers

Joint fillers are a gypsum-based setting material for bedding tapes and filling plasterboard joints. They are particularly suitable for bulk and secondary filling of joints. They offer low shrinkage and a variety of drying times.

For many, these lightweight powder products are the preferred go-to multipurpose solution because they are easy to mix from powder and work particularly well with jointing tapes, as well as being suitable for snagging and filling holes.

One aspect to consider when choosing a joint filling product is the working time, as they do vary from product to product. Products with longer working times are

great if you want to mix a larger batch due to working on a bigger project, but for smaller jobs, a smaller working time might be preferable to prevent time being wasted on site waiting for the product to dry before being able to apply a second coat. If in doubt, check the product packaging to ensure the product is suitable for jointing and filling and that the working time matches your needs. The Gyproc EasiFill products clearly state their working time in their name; for example,

building boards, plasters & renders

EasiFill 20 has a 20-minute working time, whereas EasiFill 60 has a 60-minute working time, and the intended use for the product will be stated on the packaging and in published installation guides available on the manufacturer’s website.

For added convenience, ready-mixed products are also available, which saves time when mixing and helps reduce waste by preventing mixing errors and scrapping any unused product. Readymixed products come in resealable tubs, so you can use what you need, reseal and then use the product again on the next job. The Gyproc ProMix Lite is a readymixed jointing compound for all stages of filling and tape bedding. This versatile mixture is available in 20kg tubs and is a great alternative to powder products, especially if gaining access to water onsite is an issue.

Combined joint filling and finishing

Traditionally, jointing and filling would have been a three-stage process, but products such as Gyproc EasiFill 60 and Gyproc ProMix Lite can be used for both bulk filling and finishing for speed and convenience. These products combine setting and air-drying, which avoids having to use more than one jointing compound.

Tip: Only use with hand jointing as being a setting compound it could set within mechanical taping tools.

Choose your tapes

Jointing compounds are only part of the story. A key part of plasterboard preparation is taping joints, and choosing the right tape is just as important.

There are two types of jointing tapes: paper-based and fibreglass mesh:

• Paper tape provides a strong bond when used with jointing compounds and is particularly effective at preventing cracks where there may be movement between two joints. Paper tapes require a certain skill level to ensure a smooth finish, but they remain a popular choice. Paper-based tape is often less expensive and best suited to those on a budget, but with more time to achieve the desired finish.

“By carefully selecting the right jointing compounds and tapes, and ensuring meticulous preparation, tradespeople can achieve a smooth, professional finish that enhances a space’s aesthetic and functional qualities.”

• Fibreglass mesh tape has gained popularity due to its ease of use and flexibility. It is selfadhesive, allowing for quick application without the need for additional compounds. It is particularly effective in areas prone to cracking because of its tear strength.

Whether you choose paper-based or fibreglass mesh is down to preference. However, tape is a key part of ensuring your jointing compound fills and sets properly and can prevent timely and costly rework, so it is worth taking the time to choose a good-quality tape that matches the needs of your project.

In conclusion, while traditional wet plastering remains a vital technique for certain applications, the rise of

plasterboard offers a modern, efficient alternative that meets the demands of contemporary construction. By carefully selecting the right jointing compounds and tapes, and ensuring meticulous preparation, tradespeople can achieve a smooth, professional finish that enhances a space’s aesthetic and functional qualities. As the construction industry continues to advance, plasterboard stands out as a practical solution that balances speed, cost-effectiveness and performance, making it a preferred choice for many projects.

COME ON BOARD

Professional Builder visits the new ETEX plasterboard factory in Bristol.

If you want confirmation of a manufacturer’s commitment to the UK market then the largest single investment in a production facility in any of its global regions would be a powerful statement of intent. The expanded ETEX plasterboard factory in Bristol has been in operation since August of 2024 and represents a whopping £170million outlay.

It joins the 160 ETEX factories already operating in 45 different countries and is the most efficient and state of the art plasterboard facility in Europe. In touring the site it’s the sheer scale that immediately impresses. So long is the production line, in fact – that in order to maintain a high degree of accuracy – the curvature of the earth had to be taken into account.

Given that it is constructed of just paper, gypsum and additives there’s

significant potential for plasterboard recycling and ETEX currently uses from 23 – 45% recycled material depending on the type of board. Indeed, the whole Bristol operation has been designed around the reuse of as much waste material as possible, with a parallel emphasis on collecting and using rainwater, and a zero waste to landfill policy. At the same time local production that services the UK market significantly reduces the CO2 that is generated through logistics.

Master plaster

Gypsum has been used as a building material for thousands of years and can even be found in the pyramids of Egypt. Today, the factory’s main raw material is mined in Spain, with enough gypsum supply to service the Bristol site for the next forty years. Recycled material is kept in a separate store. The gypsum is then dehydrated through heating and milled to produce a fine powder known as Stucco. Perfect plasterboard demands a precise recipe, with additives are introduced to make it stronger or less dense. A lighter board makes it easier to carry and install, for example. Once water

is added the resulting slurry is then sandwiched between two layers of paper. Every board is quality checked along the line and, once formed into boards, it then enters a series of huge self-contained driers. There are, in fact, three separate drying zones set at different temperatures with the level of heat and speed at which the board passes through determined by the class of product.

Under its Siniat brand, ETEX produces a comprehensive range for every conceivable building project. These include Universal Board, which provides superior levels of fire, impact and acoustic performance. Fire Board achieves 60 minutes fire resistance from a 15mm single layer. Siniat dB Board is an acoustic solution and Aquaboard is a water-resistant product for kitchens and bathrooms. The Bristol factory includes a training school so that installers can learn more about any of these products.

RENDER UP

Jason Nicholson of K Rend looks at the wide range of colours and textures available in K Rend’s render portfolio and how these options allow housebuilders to achieve the desired aesthetics without compromising on efficiency.

Ahome’s external façade is a critical element of its overall design, which is why a façade material or solution that can add personality and character has an allimportant role to play in the aesthetics of both new build and refurbishment projects.

The visual impact of a building’s outer skin, achieved through carefully selected coloured and textured renders, can shape how people perceive and interact with it. These choices not only influence how the building fits within its environment but can also define the character of a street or community. The right combination of colour and texture in an external façade can transform a building’s aesthetic and evoke an emotional response from passersby.

This is why developers and housebuilders are increasingly moving away from uniform white boxes in favour of incorporating colour and texture to enhance the visual impact of

developments. Through-coloured renders have become a popular choice due to their low maintenance finish that eliminates the need for painting. Additionally, the use of contrasting colours can help to break up street scenes, creating a more vibrant and cohesive development.

Balancing colour and texture

When specifying a coloured render, it’s essential to take into account the surrounding environment. The hue, tone and texture should complement the local architecture and landscape, creating a visually appealing streetscape.

Lighter shades can help to make a

building feel more spacious and airy, while darker shades can add depth and drama. The texture of the render also plays a significant role in defining the overall appearance and character of a property, whether it is the smooth uniformity of a fine finish, to the tactile appeal of a more textured surface. Additionally, using multiple colours will build contrast, accentuate architectural features and bring attention to specific details. The outside of a home can be considered in the same way as the inside, ensuring everything builds as a canvas together –including the windows, doors and tiles.

Collaborating closely with the render manufacturer is key to ensuring the chosen colour and finish meets the design vision for the project. For example, K Rend’s through-coloured renders are available in 20 standard colours, with the option to colour match using the NCS colour system for bespoke shades.

With a variety of modern render finish options available, from thin coat to scraped texture to roughcast and dash, it’s important to request samples to verify colour and texture choices.

Transforming developments

A development in Suffolk features K Rend’s K Mono, monocouche scraped-texture render in a palette of powder blue, salmon pink and ivory. This mix of soft, pastel tones helped to create a pretty and unique aesthetic across the development, avoiding the monotony of a single colour and appealing to home owners while fitting perfectly with the picturesque historic streets of this rural area of Suffolk. K Mono, which can be applied in one coat one pass, was ideal for a large development such as this due to its quick setting times and speed of construction.

In Northern Ireland, a detached property was enhanced with a bespoke colour created by K Rend’s silicone thin-coat render. This allowed the housebuilder to achieve a striking shade that complemented the surrounding architecture and landscape. The ability to colour match and create renders in any shade outside the standard 20 colours available in the thin coat range, enables the housebuilder to create a truly unique and bespoke project.

A development in Mullingar, Southern Ireland used K Rend’s Silicone K1 scraped texture range in white but offered a pop of colour with thin coat render in two bespoke colours creating a striking aesthetic and a development with real kerb appeal. Furthermore, the silicone technology use in both products added water repellency to keep the render looking fresher for longer, and the mica in K Rend renders added that signature sparkle.

Coloured and textured renders provide housebuilders and specifiers with a versatile and long-lasting solution for creating visually appealing new homes. By carefully considering colour, texture and the surrounding context, the exterior façade can be transformed from a standard ‘brick box’ into a distinctive, memorable building that elicits an emotional response. As the demand for more vibrant and personalised new-build homes continues to grow, coloured renders will play a key role in shaping the future of our built environment.

NEW SERIES

In the first of our Build it Better series with Catnic, Richard Price, Technical Director outlines how plaster bead corrosion can spoil a professional finish and how

Whether it’s for a new build or a refurbishment, plastering is all about achieving a consistent and high-quality finish. One of the biggest risks to the perfect finish is corrosion of the bead under the surface, causing unsightly rust stains. In the worst cases, if left unaddressed, the corrosion can create pressure under the surface and cause the plaster to crack and crumble. However, the risk can be minimised with the correct approach.

Choosing the right product for the job.

The first step is to ensure the correct bead has been selected for the application. For dry internal areas, galvanised steel plaster

bead can be used. The zinc coating provides protection from atmospheric moisture, but this is not as effective as with other options. In areas exposed to a higher level of moisture, for example bathrooms and exterior applications, stainless steel or PVCu beads should be selected. These provide an improved level of resistance to corrosion. In areas with very high levels of moisture, such as in wet rooms, a PVCu bead should be considered as it is completely resistant to corrosion. For dry lining and gypsumbased plasters only galvanised and PVCu beads should be used. Therefore, the choice of beads has to be made based on the nature of the project.

Optimise drying conditions

Under normal conditions, the main risk of corrosion of galvanised beads comes with extended drying time when the bead is in contact with moist plaster. Longer drying times can occur during winter months when air temperatures are lower and moisture in the air is higher. However, drying the plaster too quickly, such as with directed heat, can cause the plaster to crack. Where possible conditions should be optimised by raising the temperature of the room, increasing airflow or reducing the humidity.

Careful handling and storage

Before installation, the beads should be stored dry off the ground, on the flat surface to prevent bending and mechanical damage.

Best practice installation

When mechanically fixing the plaster bead, it is crucial to use only corrosionresistant fixings made of the same type of metal the bead is made of. Zinc coated fixings should be used only with galvanised beads and stainless steel fixings with stainless steel beads. Where different metals are in contact in the presence of moisture, as galvanic corrosion will take place. It is going to cause surface staining and damage to the plaster.

The quality of the installation is also a factor. Firstly, it is important to only use a suitable type of plaster mix, Similarly, it is essential that only clean fresh water is used in the mix. Water contaminated with soluble salts and chlorides, in addition to weakening the plaster, can also promote metal profiles corrosion.

Care should be taken during plastering to avoid excessive trowel pressure over the beads nosing. Scratching over the nosing may result in damaging protective coating and causing rust occurrence.

Plaster bead corrosion can have a serious impact on the finish, in severe cases resulting in the need for complete replacement of rusted profiles. Minimising the risk should therefore be a priority for any professional. With the right highquality products and best practice installation, the problem can be

WATCH THIS SPACE

Colin Wells, Head of Technical at Keylite Roof Windows, explores how tradespeople can specify the right daylighting solutions to create bright, compliant and thermally efficient living spaces.

In a post-pandemic world, the demand for home extensions has only increased. Homeowners are looking for ways to optimise their living spaces, creating dedicated home offices, playrooms, extra bedrooms, or even home gyms. Extensions are often the best solution, providing more room without the disruption of moving. Loft conversions, meanwhile, remain a popular choice for adding space vertically, particularly in homes where ground-level space is at a premium.

A well-designed loft conversion can increase property value by around 21 per cent, making it an excellent investment in today’s fluctuating housing market. When done right, these projects not only provide much-needed space but can also transform underutilised areas into bright, functional rooms that enhance the overall appeal and performance of the property. The key to a successful project lies in thoughtful product selection, particularly when it comes to daylighting.

Roof windows are essential to making a loft or extension feel airy and spacious. Natural light is a major selling point and carefully positioned roof windows can maximise the daylight that floods into a room. This is particularly important in summer, when longer days and better weather make it easier to take advantage of natural light.

Incorporating roof windows that provide a clear view of the sky and

Keylite’s patented Integrated Expanding Thermal Collar prevents thermal bridging

■ It’s also worth remembering that access to newly converted lofts and storage spaces is an important part of the overall build. Whether it’s a home extension or loft conversion, Keylite loft ladders offer a compliant, thermally efficient solution that helps contractors deliver more value on every job.

Delivered to site as a fully assembled unit, each ladder includes an insulated trapdoor and all necessary components for straightforward fitting – with no specialist tools or cutting required.

With a low U-value of just 1.1 W/m²K on the standard model – and an exceptional 0.67 W/m²K on the new Hi-Therm Loft Ladder – both options also achieve the highest Class 4 airtightness rating. A wide range of sizes are available to suit most ceiling heights and apertures, with pre-fitted Flick-Fit brackets for quick, accurate installation.

Keylite also offers a growing range of loft ladder accessories, including architrave kits for a neat finish, as well as balustrades and grab rails to enhance safety and ease of use.

By specifying Keylite loft ladders alongside roof windows, contractors can ensure the entire space is accessible, energy efficient and built to the highest performance standards.

surrounding area can enhance the overall ambiance of a room, making it feel more open and connected to the outdoors. This connection to nature is especially valuable in urban areas where outdoor space is limited.

Large expanses of glass not only improve light levels but can also enhance the aesthetic of a property. However, it’s crucial to get the right balance between size and positioning. Protruding windows can disrupt the clean lines of a roof, so products like Keylite roof windows –recessed as standard – are a smart choice, blending seamlessly with the roof and contributing to both the aesthetics and thermal performance of the space.

Ensuring effective insulation and airtightness is another key consideration. Gaps around the window frame, common in many installations, can lead to energy loss, cold spots, potential condensation

and mould growth. This issue is particularly important in roof spaces where heat loss can be more pronounced. Keylite has tackled this with its patented Integrated Expanding Thermal Collar, which fills the gap around the window during installation, preventing thermal bridging and ensuring compliance with Approved Document L requirements.

Light work

With ongoing pressure to meet energy efficiency standards, selecting the right windows can also improve the overall sustainability of the home. By maximising natural light while reducing the need for artificial lighting, roof windows help lower energy consumption, making extensions and loft conversions a more environmentally friendly option.

Ventilation is also important, especially with changes to Approved Document F. In

all habitable rooms, adequate background ventilation is now a mandatory requirement. Roof windows with integrated ventilation, such as Keylite’s top-handle design, ensure compliance while also offering greater control over airflow. These windows provide trickle ventilation even when closed and locked, addressing the issue of poorly ventilated windows that could otherwise fail inspection.

Finally, the ease and speed of installation are crucial to staying on schedule and keeping projects running smoothly. Our roof windows come with features such as Flick-Fit brackets, which make installation quicker and safer. These design innovations help reduce installation time and ensure that contractors can work efficiently without compromising quality.

Whether working on a rear or side return extension, a loft conversion, or any other home improvement project, contractors who choose the right products and specifications can avoid delays and produce high-quality, energyefficient results that homeowners will appreciate. With the right solutions, tradespeople can continue to succeed in the extension and conversion market, delivering projects that are as compliant and thermally efficient as they are stylish.

Daniel McKane, Sales Director from YBS Insulation gives us the low-down on choosing insulation solutions for all types of garden building.

THE GARDEN PARTY

With summer here, many people are looking to make the most of their outdoor space – meaning you could well see an increase in enquiries for garden rooms. But with the unpredictable weather in the UK, making these inside/outside buildings habitable year-round requires careful consideration when it comes to the insulation, both to preserve warmth in the winter and to deflect high temperatures during the (sometimes fleeting) British summer.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT INSULATION OFFERS SEVERAL BENEFITS:

1. Enhanced Comfort

Proper insulation ensures that your garden room remains comfortable throughout the year, providing a pleasant environment regardless of the weather outside.

2. Options

Properly insulating a garden room from the beginning gives you more options on what you can use the space for and means the purpose of the room can be changed at any time.

3. Energy Efficiency

Insulation helps reduce the amount of energy needed to heat or cool a garden

room, leading to lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint.

4. Noise Reduction

Insulation materials can also help dampen sound, making a garden room a quieter and more peaceful space that’s secluded from the noise of the outside world.

5. Moisture Control

Effective insulation helps prevent condensation and moisture buildup, which are common issues in spaces that experience temperature fluctuations, reducing the risk of mold and mildew, which can damage the structure and items within and affect indoor air quality.

6. Increased Property Value

A well-insulated garden room can add value to your customer’s property by providing a functional and energy-efficient additional living space.

This makes a garden room a healthier environment for work or relaxation. Whether your customer is using a garden room as a home office, studio, summer house or den, insulation ensures it’s a versatile space that meets all needs, all year round.

Considerations for garden room

insulation installation

When planning the insulation for a garden

room, several factors need to be considered to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

• The local climate plays a significant role in determining the type and amount of insulation needed.

• The insulation plan must comply with local building regulations and standards.

• In some cases, a vapour barrier may be necessary to prevent moisture from passing through the insulation and causing condensation.

• Effective air sealing is essential to complement the insulation. Gaps, cracks, and openings in the building envelope should be sealed to prevent air leakage and enhance the overall thermal performance.

Material choice

To achieve optimal insulation, it is essential to insulate all parts of the garden room: walls, floors, roofs, and windows – and each area requires specific insulation techniques and materials. Multifoil insulation represents a highly effective option. In simple terms, it combines multiple layers of reflective foil with low-emissivity surfaces, separated by layers of foam or fibre wadding. This composition allows it to combat all three types of heat transfer – conduction, convection and radiation.

extensions & home improvements

Performance benefits

One of the primary advantages of multifoil insulation is its excellent thermal performance. Despite being relatively thin compared to traditional insulation materials, multifoil can provide insulation values equivalent to much thicker layers of better-known alternatives. For example, some multifoil products can offer thermal performance equivalent to 130mm of mineral fibre insulation, while others can match the performance of 75mm.

This high performance is achieved through the reflective properties of the foil layers, which bounce radiant heat back into the living space during winter and reflect solar heat away from the building in summer. This dual action helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature all year round, potentially reducing energy costs and improving the overall energy efficiency of a home.

Saving space

Multifoil insulation’s slim profile makes it an excellent choice for projects where

maximising living space is crucial. Its thinness allows for greater flexibility in design and can be particularly beneficial in smaller out buildings where every centimetre counts.

Moreover, multifoil insulation can often serve multiple purposes. Some products can act as both insulation and a vapour control layer, while others can function as insulation and a breather membrane. This multi-functionality can simplify the construction process and potentially reduce the overall thickness of wall or roof build-ups.

Simple installation

The installation process is straightforward – the insulation is typically unrolled and fixed in place using staples or battens. Joints are then sealed with specialised tape to ensure continuity of the insulation layer and achieve a professional-looking result.

Building Regulations compliance

As Building Regulations continue to tighten in the pursuit of more energyefficient homes, multifoil insulation can play a crucial role in meeting these standards. The Future Homes and Buildings Standard, which is set to be introduced in 2025, will require significantly improved U-values for various building elements. Multifoil insulation, when used as part of a well-designed insulation strategy, can contribute to achieving these targets.

PITCH PERFECT

Insulating a pitched roof at rafter level can transform a loft into a comfortable, usable space. While it might not be as cost-effective in the short-term as ceiling-level insulation, it offers the significant advantage of creating a habitable space and delivers greater long-term energy savings. While thermal performance is the priority, there are insulation products on the market that deliver acoustic insulation and improved fire safety as well. Here are the three key steps to insulating a pitched roof at rafter level:

Installing the low resistivity underlay and vapour control layer

Effective moisture and vapour control is critical for rafter-level insulation. Before adding the insulation, you will need to install a low resistivity underlay, known as a breather membrane, above the rafters and below the tiling battens. This allows water vapour to escape from inside the structure, while preventing rain driven under the tiles from entering the building.

Case

study: A timber frame house with a pitched roof

Insulate roofs at rafter level in three steps with Knauf Insulation

After the first layer of insulation is installed between the rafters, you will need to add a Vapour Control Layer (VCL) to prevent moisture transfer through the building. The VCL also reduces the risk of condensation forming by preventing warm, moisture-laden air from contacting cold surfaces within the construction and condensing. For the VCL to perform correctly, make sure the layer is continuous and sealed at all laps.

When architect Keith Edwards, was specifying insulation for his own timber frame house, ease of installation was just as important as performance – because he’d literally be building the house himself. Keith said: “I knew it would be much easier and quicker for me to get a really good fit with mineral wool insulation than it is with rigid boards.”

To achieve a U-value of 0.12 W/m²K for the pitched roof, Keith used 100mm of OmniFit® Slab 35 internally between battens, with three layers of 75mm Rafter Roll 32. To prevent

Choosing and installing the insulation

Once the low resistivity membrane is installed, you can fit your choice of insulation between the rafters. It’s essential to choose the right product for the application.

Mineral wool is an ideal choice due to its flexibility, ease of correct installation, and ability to adapt to any imperfections and the seasonal change of the structure. Unlike rigid boards, mineral wool can be friction fitted between the rafters, minimising air gaps and ensuring reliable thermal and acoustic performance.

Buildability is another critical factor to consider. Selecting a product that is easy

the build-up of interstitial condensation, he installed the insulation with an open-jointed sarking board and a vapour control layer.

The right product for the application

Contractors have many options for insulating a pitched roof at rafter level. The right product for the application will depend on the use of the space, its size and the contractors’ own considerations for installation. It requires expertise and experience to make these decisions and ensure the insulation will deliver the required performance effectively when installed and over the building’s lifetime.

extensions & home improvements

to cut, fit, and handle reduces installation errors and ensures the insulation performs as intended in real-world conditions. If you’re using mineral wool, make sure you choose a product specifically made for rafter level insulation. Knauf Insulation’s Rafter Roll, for example, is provided at a width of 1,200mm to account for varying rafter centre widths. Once it is cut to the correct size, it can be friction fitted between rafters.

Layering with insulated battens or PIR laminate

To optimise thermal performance, and achieve the desired U-values, additional layers of insulation can be added beneath the rafters. Contractors usually face a choice between insulated battens or PIR laminate boards.

PIR laminate boards offer high thermal performance for applications where space is at a premium, but these will require

precise installation and taping to ensure the desired U-value is achieved.

On the other hand, using rock mineral wool insulation between battens offers benefits beyond thermal performance and is particularly suitable where space is a lesser concern. Rocksilk® RS45, for example, is non-combustible, with the best possible Euroclass A1 reaction fire rating and provides acoustic absorption too.

Once this step is complete, plasterboard can be added beneath the second insulation layer.

Mineral wool can be friction fitted between the rafters

For the homeowner, almost as much pride is now taken in the outdoor space as the interior. If your client has spent a fortune bringing the outside in with bi fold doors and a porcelain patio then failed mortar joints are going to be an unsightly and unwelcome intrusion to that garden paradise.

It is here that EASY Patio Joint Repair works its magic by restoring joints in patios and paths to their former glory. As a replacement to traditional sand and cement, it’s simply a matter of clearing out any loose material and sweeping in the product. The clever part is what happens when you wet the area. This Azpects solution is an encapsulated sand with polymers that will expand slightly when exposed to water. It will then stick to the side of the paving providing a flexible, strong and long-lasting joint that equally deters weed growth and crawling insects. It’s ready to use straight from the tub with no mixing, is suitable for all paving types, and is resistant to erosion caused by water, frost, wind, or cleaning.

The beauty of this approach is that it’s

AN EASY WIN

possible to repair small areas whilst carrying out regular maintenance. If you’re pressure washing and some of the joint is dislodged, for instance, it’s easy to repair it there and then. For a tradesperson it can represent a good upsell when already undertaking a landscaping or home improvement project. With an almost unlimited shelf life, provided it’s kept dry, it would be good to have the 5kg tub of EASY Patio Joint Repair on the van ready to be called into action when required.

The product is supplied in a sand and

cement coloured grey/beige which should match the existing weathered mortar. In terms of conditions for application –because it’s activated by water – it can’t be raining and should not be used below 10°C. Depending on climatic condition it can set in as little as 24 hours. As with all of Azpects products the usual PPE precautions should be heeded, including gloves and goggles.

YOUR PATH TO RENEWED PAVING AND PATIOS IN SIMPLE STEPS:

STEP 1: Open the tub and tip out enough material to fill the joint areas being repaired. Sweep the product into the joints until full. Gently firm the surface with a suitable tool and apply more product as required until the level of the joint is just below the surface of the paver.

STEP 2: Use a fine spray to wet the joints until no more water is absorbed.

CAUTION! DO NOT OVER-WATER.

ALL TIES UP

Rory Ashcroft, National Sales Manager for Merchants at Leviat, reveals the crucial aspects builders must consider when planning and building an extension and underlines the importance of utilising the right products and materials.

With the demand for improved build quality increasing, building standards are evertightening. Consequently, builders and bricklayers must build with safety and quality at the forefront, especially where new cavity walls are tied into existing structures.

However, with property owners becoming increasingly climate-conscious, a sharpened focus on thermal efficiency, acoustic performance, and sustainability must also be part of any successful property extension project.

This heightens the importance of specifying and installing the very latest market-leading products. Suitable for use in line with the National House-Building Council (NHBC), the Ancon Staifix range of stainless-steel cavity wall ties, starter ties, wall starter systems, and frame ties offers strength and durability alongside superb thermal and acoustic performance.

The importance of low thermal conductivity

During comprehensive property extensions, bricklayers and builders must balance building safety and aesthetics with thermal performance. While they are an essential tool in ensuring strength, longevity, and durability, wall ties can often impact the wall’s thermal efficiency by acting as thermal bridges.

To mitigate this, it is important that low thermal conductivity wall ties are specified and installed, particularly for wider cavities. For instance, the application of marketleading cavity wall ties, such as Ancon Teplo-BF ties, can play a vital role in enhancing thermal efficiency.

Ancon Teplo cavity wall ties comprise

pultruded basalt fibres set in a resin matrix – offering a thermal conductivity of just 0.7W/mK. Consequently, these ties are excluded from U-value calculations to BS EN ISO 6946, minimising wall footprint and insulation thickness.

Enhanced acoustic performance

With population growth increasing demand for housing, buildings are often built closer together to maximise available space. While this provides more housing opportunities for UK residents, it also increases the possibility of noise pollution and exacerbates the need for better sound insulation.

This is heightened further by everstringent legislation and codes, meaning the specification of acoustically-optimised materials is paramount.

Suitable for internal separating (party) walls of new build attached dwellings, the Ancon Staifix HRT4 wall ties are Part E, Type A approved – offering enhanced acoustic performance. Minimising the transfer of airborne noise and vibration, these innovative products are suitable for cavity widths up to 150mm in domestic properties up to 10 metres in height.

Regulatory compliance

Builders and bricklayers are under increasing pressure to meet a myriad of building regulations as a result of the heightened demand for safer, more energy-efficient, and better built structures.

Whether it’s ensuring structural integrity to comply with Part A of the building regulations, focusing on superior thermal performance to meet energy efficiency and thermal insulation targets of Part L, or specifying and installing soundproof materials with Part E in mind, those tasked with undertaking house extensions must design, plan, and build with quality, safety, and sustainability at the forefront.

Ancon Staifix Wall Starter

Ensuring best practice

With building quality and safety standards ever-tightening, it is imperative for builders and bricklayers to take a cohesive and holistic approach when it comes to property extensions.

Close collaboration between all parties involved – such as the builders, architects, designers, and the client –enables a much more streamlined process, reduces risks, and improves project outcomes. By working together from the outset and communicating effectively, any potential issues, such as thermal bridging, can be addressed early – leading to fewer delays and costly alterations and ensuring a more successful and smoother project.

The correct specification of materials With many UK properties built before 1980 having cavity widths between 50 and 75mm – modern standards typically specify 100-150mm – the correct specification of wall ties, restraints, and fixings is absolutely crucial. Especially when you consider the critical role that

wall ties play in cavity wall stability.

To address these challenges, Leviat’s wide range of wall ties, restraints, and fixings, such as basalt fibre ties, acoustic ties, and low thermal conductivity wall ties, are designed and manufactured with longevity, durability, strength, and sustainability in mind. Offering superior performance, trusted stability, and enhanced safety, Leviat’s products are ideal for any property extension project.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Paul Higgins, Commercial Director at TuffX, looks closer at the diverse glazing solutions available for modern extensions

A glazing first approach

Whether you’re working on a single-storey extension, a double-height transformation, or a smaller side return, one key design element that can elevate any extension project is glazing. The right glazing choices make all the difference, boosting natural light, supporting thermal performance, and enhancing visual appeal.

Popular options include rooflights and skylights for overhead illumination, roof lanterns as dramatic focal points, and bifold doors or floor-to-ceiling windows that seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces. Glass balustrades ensure seamless light penetration from every angle, and even infill panels within solid tiled roofs provide a smart way to introduce daylight into otherwise enclosed areas. Collectively, these solutions can significantly enhance the look, feel, and efficiency of any extension.

Bespoke sizing and quality control

When looking to add value and versatility to projects, offering bespoke rooflight sizes can be a real game-changer. It provides more than just standard sizing options; it opens up creative design possibilities that standard options can’t match and creates a competitive advantage for homeowners seeking a

more premium, high-spec finish. Just a few centimetres can make all the difference.

All TuffX products are proudly ‘Made in Britain’, and the brand proudly carries the official trademark for British manufacturing. This ensures quality and capability for a quick turnaround on bespoke rooflight orders, allowing the build to progress as planned without any delays.

When it comes to frame specification, it is just as crucial as the glazing itself. Insulating frames are engineered to work in tandem with the glass, preventing heat loss in colder months and limiting heat gain during warmer periods, ensuring year-round comfort.

Creating comfortable indoor environments

Managing thermal performance is especially important in large, glazed areas

where the risk of overheating can be a concern. High-quality solar glass products play a crucial role in achieving the comfortable ambient interior temperature that occupants desire, without relying on air cooling technologies.

With solar control glass, the amount of solar energy entering a building is controlled using a tinted coating on the outside of the glass. In short, solar glass products can reflect heat away from the inside of the home to help ensure the space doesn’t get overheated. Solar glass is also a much more cost-effective solution to the problem than specifying air cooling technologies, and it’s possible to specify solar glass, which is designed to reflect twice as much heat as standard glass.

Heating and glazing combined

Eliminating the need for wall-mounted heat emitters in an extension, particularly in compact spaces, can significantly transform the room’s design and usability. GLOW heated glass provides a doubleduty solution in bi-fold doors and roof infill panels, thanks to an invisible conductive coating that is electrically heated to convert electric power into radiant heat. Ensuring it can be relied upon as the primary heat source, the glass surface temperatures reach 35-40°C and are

controlled via a wall-mounted thermostat, freeing up wall space where traditional radiators need to be placed and enhancing interior layout opportunities.

This radiant heat technology has an average hourly cost of around 9p per bi-fold door, so, for example, a three-door bifold configuration running for five hours per day will cost around £1.35 (based on an electricity cost of 25p/kWh). Glow installation costs are lower than electric underfloor heating or traditional radiators, making it a more budget-friendly option.

Heated glass also dramatically reduces condensation, preserving uninterrupted views both upwards through the roof space and outwards to the garden. Plus, unlike regular traditional emitters, no ongoing maintenance is required, providing a hassle-free heating solution for extensions.

Low-carbon solutions

For customers seeking solutions to reduce the carbon impact of their extensions, low-carbon glass can enhance the overall energy performance of homes.

This specialist glass, produced with lower energy consumption and fewer carbon-intensive materials, contributes to a building’s overall embedded carbon, from construction to operation. The raw materials required to create low-carbon glass are also sourced sustainably, further reducing the environmental impact of production.

This innovative glass offers superior insulation properties, preventing heat loss in winter and reducing the need for air conditioning in summer, which further cuts energy use. Designed to withstand the test of time, low-carbon glass decreases the frequency of replacement, regardless of external factors like weather, temperature fluctuations, or normal wear and tear. Consequently, this superior-quality solution boasts a longer lifecycle, lessening the need for maintenance tasks such as cleaning and repairs and the environmental burden of replacement.

TuffX was the first manufacturer in the world to introduce low-carbon glass, which was expertly designed without compromising quality and performance. Offering the same aesthetics as regular clear glass, the products contain 64% recycled content and are produced using renewable electricity throughout the manufacturing process.

LIGHTWEIGHT THERMAL SCREED

A new lightweight thermal screed called Diathonite Thermostep.047 has been revealed by Ecological Building Systems. The new sustainable thermal screed is manufactured from cork combined with lime, which is four times lighter than a traditional screed. It is also five times more insulating and six times more resistant than traditional screeds, with a minimum thickness of 30mm. Thermostep.047 also offers impressive acoustic insulation properties.

POST PROTECTOR

A 25-year field test conducted by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), Europe’s largest independent timber testing organisation, has led to outstanding results for Postsaver. Using the rigorous methodology outlined in EN252:2014 researchers found that manufacturer’s dual-layer ground-line barrier sleeves, when used with a mild dip preservative treatment, showed zero failures after nearly 25 years of continuous in-ground exposure –proving to be a highly effective solution for long-term timber protection.

GET SMART

Homeowners’ attitudes to the security of their homes remains something of a conundrum: whilst research by Sainsbury’s Bank shows that 57% of adults are concerned about home security and 17% of those surveyed expressing ‘significant’ worry, many do nothing about it. In fact, according to research carried out by Churchill Home Insurance, 65% of British homeowners don’t have an alarm system installed, despite systems being cheaper and easier to install than ever.

This offers an excellent opportunity for builders pitching for new work and especially larger, upmarket projects and those fitted with box sash vertical sliding windows that are often fitted to such projects, to gain an edge against competitors by ticking the box marked ‘Going the extra mile for customers’ in the sales playbook.

Effective hardware

Most replacement windows and doors supplied by reputable fabricators will be fitted with effective hardware including: (for windows) Multi-point locking systems (espagnolette locks) that secure the window at multiple points around the frame; shoot bolts that extend into the frame for added security; key-operated locks, particularly on ground floor windows; and laminated or toughened safety glass. Entrance doors will enjoy multi-point locking systems that engage at several points along the door frame;

Secure your customers with window smart tech that works, urges Quickslide’s Ade

deadbolts and deadlocks (BS3621 standard); and cylinder locks with antisnap, anti-bump, and anti-pick features.

But of course, the determined and experienced intruder will beat even the best of such hardware, which is why many windows and doors can now be purchased pre-installed with sophisticated sensors that are built into the hardware fitted within the window frames. Produced by ‘Kubu’, these sensors will, via the addition of simple snap-in modules and an App that the homeowner can opt to purchase, let the user know if their window is open or closed, if the window is locked, unlocked, in night-vent mode, and crucially, if the window is under attack or if the sensor is being tampered with.

And from this summer, classically styled, replacement box sash VS windows will be available with integrated Kubu smart sensors. And this is where the smart builder can gain an edge over lessinformed rivals when pitching for the better stuff, with so many upmarket projects fitted with vertical sliding frames.

Fit and forget

Smart hardware, such as keyless entrance door handles, that are locked and unlocked by phone apps, continue to be unpopular amongst homeowners and installers; it simply has not been embraced in the way that many other home automation products have, such as heating and lighting controls for example.

I therefore believe that Kubu is important by providing fit and forget smart technology to windows and doors, which works quietly in the background; and which crucially does not require a degree in electronics on the part of the installer or the homeowner, to install or operate. This technology therefore gives homeowners the peace of mind that their home is protected simply by installing new windows as part of their home improvement project.

Vertical sliding windows installed with Kubu will also integrate with every major home automation app including Alexa, Hive and many others that are already popular with homeowners. Have a good look at Kubu and especially vertical sliders installed with this tech and give your customers a leg up with the windows and doors you install for them.

SEAL THE DEAL

Protect your customers’ investments against weather damage with Thompson’s

Whether you’ve just completed a new extension or laid a fresh patio, the last thing you want is for this hard work to be undone by bad weather. The UK is well known for its unpredictable, and often extreme weather, which can have the potential to damage external surfaces like brickwork or patios. Here, Clara Dursent, Brand Manager, from Thompson’s will delve into why ‘weatherproofing’ is so important...

In 2024, a survey revealed that 40% of UK houses had suffered damage from extreme weather in the last five years. It’s no secret that our country is a wet and windy one, with rain a common occurrence throughout the year. However, the damage this weather causes can often be underestimated, with a number of issues arising from either extreme or continued poor weather.

The hidden threat of weather damage

Most home extensions or new patios are made using porous materials like brick or stone. As a result, it is quite easy for water to work its way in and cause damage. Not only can this ruin the

appearance over time, it can also affect the structural stability of a structure. While there are a number of issues that can be caused by water and rain, here are two of the most common:

• Freeze thaw: This is where water penetrates a surface and, due to low temperatures, freezes, expands and cracks the substrate. Over time this can drastically alter a surface’s appearance, as well as affecting the structural integrity of an extension or patio.

• Efflorescence: More of an aesthetic issue than anything else, efflorescence is an issue that affects many homeowners, especially with new-build homes. Caused by the presence of excess moisture within a substrate. When mixed with the salts, already present in a surface, it can form a powdery white substance on the surface of a material –mainly brickwork. This not only ruins the appearance of a home, but can also compromise its integrity.

Sun’s out, time to seal!

The best way to avoid water damage is to seal the surface after completion, helping to prevent a number of problems from ever happening.

These waterproofing products work to create an additional barrier of protection across a surface. Most are silicone based,

meaning that once applied it will cure and form a continuous water-resistant film. For extra benefits, look for microporous solutions, such as those offered by Thompson’s, which allow moisture particles to pass back out of a surface, like brickwork, ensuring it is still breathable. This process can prevent mould on the inside of a house or building.

Tackle it with Thompson’s Thompson’s offers a wide range of weatherproofing and cleaning products, ideal for use by contractors completing extensions, walls or patio projects. These include One Coat Water Seal and One Coat Patio & Block Paving Seal, which make it quick and easy to seal new hard surfaces against water and weather damage.

These products can be applied directly after work has concluded, ensuring a customer’s new investment is well protected for the wetter months, as well as providing you with an upselling opportunity.

Professional Builder speaks with Chris Middleton, General Manager of the Construction Fixings Association, on why fixing best practice is important.

Established in 1979, and incorporated in 2007 as a non-profit organisation, the Construction Fixings Association (CFA) was set up to encourage and promote best practice for fixings in the construction industry. With a board made up of members from the likes of Hilti, Fischer, Rawlplug, EJOT, ITW, Simpson Strong Tie and Würth, the CFA represents a significant amount of experience that aims to support the “fixings chain”, from distributors all the way down to installers with training courses, testing, installation videos and more.

For the latest episode of the Professional Builder Podcast, we sat down with Chris Middleton, General Manager of the CFA, who has over 30 years of experience running fixings and fastening companies, to find out why best practice is important and common mistakes for tradespeople to avoid.

Making the right choice

Thinking about best practice with fixings, it’s easy to jump straight to how the things are actually being installed on site. Chris stresses that the discussions around fixings and fastening have to begin well before then.

He clarifies, “We estimate that upwards of 50% of all fasteners are incorrectly applied. It’s a big number, but this really starts with making sure you’ve selected the right fixing for the application.

“Then, you go on to installation and proof testing. What we try to do at the CFA

FIX UP!

is make sure not only the products are specified to ETA (European Technical Assessments) or UKTA (United Kingdom Technical Assessment) standards but also the people installing them and proof testing them are fully trained and certified.”

Indeed, seemingly small choices when at work, whether it’s building an extension or hanging up a shelf, can have big consequences down the line. Chris uses the example of wall ties in housebuilding.

“If we take the simplest housebuilding, for instance, we find that in a simple wall tie, people are putting a carbon steel wall tie into a cavity where it should be stainless, and it should be an austenitic stainless rather than a martensitic stainless. It’s fine, it holds the wall, but in 10 years time, it won’t, it will have corroded. Now, it passes the inspection because it’s buried in a cavity and it almost goes unnoticed and uninspected at

that time. People get away with these things and down the line, they find that they’ve got a warranty issue in 10 years because the walls are starting to bow out.”

Building safety

Warranty issues aren’t the only factors at play here either. The trades often get a bad rep in the UK, so anything to challenge this is a bonus. Safety is also a huge consideration too, with potentially catastrophic repercussions.

“Too many times, and Grenfell is a typical example if you read the report, companies or contractors change the specification or put in a fixing or fastener that they deemed to be similar, but obviously doesn’t conform fully. Then what you get there, especially within a system, is lots and lots of different products, all very close to the specification, which means the actual assembly is out of specification and you get disasters.”

“I could name lots of instances up and down the country where the CFA has been asked to go in and give an independent view of what’s gone on and what’s failed. We see failures in construction all the time and really our job within the CFA is to make sure that we lift the standards of people selecting the products and lift the standards of people installing them.”

While high rise blocks like Grenfell aren’t the usual property for an average

jobbing builder, the events there represent the larger problems associated with fixings and fastenings. There is still the potential for injury or casualty in the smallest of installations.

Common mistakes

Chris elaborates on whether there’s common mistakes he’s seen in his experience in the industry. “Not using setting tools on drop in anchors is a classic. Wall ties, as I said, not using stainless, particularly austenitic stainless steel wall ties is another classic. Putting fixings in too close to the edge of concrete and cracking too.

“I’ve got a whole gallery of rogue installations that I could call on. So yeah, there’s some common things like not using drills that are regulated, not getting

a round hole, not cleaning holes out correctly in concrete lack of embedment depth, hitting rebar.

“You’d be amazed at how many people drill a hole and then don’t get the dust out the bottom. They’ve said, well, I’ve drilled it to the correct depth, but actually the bottom 20 centimetres is completely packed in!”

Help and guidance

Thankfully, these common mistakes (and less common ones!) need not be made on-site. The CFA website is host to a vast wealth of resources which are available free of charge. Guidance notes, installation videos, method statements, Building Regulations and technical articles are all available –as well as a technical team that’s happy to help with any technical queries. Paid training courses are available too in-person or online.

Chris summarises: “At the Construction Fixings Association, we cover everything from putting a washing line up to a nuclear power station. There’s slightly different tensile tests and stress tests needed on both of those, but we do cover all the aspects!”

With new regulations on the horizon for 2025, RWC’s Richard Bateman explains what installers need to know about the Future Homes Standard

FUTURE PROOFING

The Future Homes Standard (FHS) has been the talk of the industry for the past couple of years. While the legislation has progressed through consultation since 2019, and a new government has now taken the reigns, there has been much speculation around what to expect – and how it will impact installers in their day-to-day jobs.

As we know, our industry is shaped largely by regulation, but it is the plumbers on the front line and the innovative solutions they install that make advancements in performance and efficiency possible.

To support installers to prepare for the changing regulation, let’s take a look at some of the key aspects of the FHS and explore what we know we can expect in 2025.

Why is the FHS being introduced?

Before we get stuck into the changes that will be triggered, let’s take a minute to understand its purpose.

In the UK, homes are one of the leading contributors towards greenhouse gas

emissions. In fact, around 20% of UK emissions are generated by our homes, and 80% of that comes from their plumbing and heating. With the national ambition to cut emissions en route to achieving netzero by 2050, it is imperative that houses become more efficient.

For a large proportion of homes in the UK, improving efficiency will rely on a broad programme of decarbonisation. While this can involve everything from improving insulation and air tightness through to implementing renewables with technology like solar panels, for plumbing and heating installers, solutions are more tangible.

Plumbers will notice more opportunity to install low-carbon heat sources such as heat pumps, an increased appetite for underfloor heating and other energy efficient heating systems and, naturally, a noticeable adjustment to some ways of working.

What

can installers expect?

The Future Homes Standard will promote efficiency through almost every aspect,

with the ultimate goal of reducing emissions from new and existing housing stock. With millions of existing homes potentially in need of decarbonisation and improvement, let’s think about some of the jobs installers might start seeing a lot more of.

Firstly, gas boilers. There has been a lot of talk recently about a ban on gas boilers in existing homes from 2035 –essentially meaning that if a boiler breaks, homeowners will need to install a more efficient alternative instead of replacing like-for-like. Ahead of the launch of the Future Homes Standard in 2025, however, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has said this ban will no longer be introduced, citing concerns around costs to homeowners. In practice, this means it is likely that installers will still be able to install new gas boilers in existing homes for the foreseeable future.

That doesn’t mean that energy efficiency won’t still be front of mind for homeowners, though. Installers should still expect to see a growing appetite for heat pumps over the coming years, as

well as more efficient heating systems like underfloor heating. This aligns with the existing requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations that the flow temperature of heating systems should not exceed 55°C.

Essentially, with the introduction of the FHS, installers should anticipate a focus on modifying and improving existing properties to make them more efficient and to reduce their environmental impact.

Is the Future Homes Standard definitely coming in 2025?

After years in the planning, and lengthy consultation periods, the industry is expecting the introduction of the Future Homes Standard in 2025. As a date is yet to be announced by the government, official introduction of the FHS is unlikely to happen during the summer. At this point, it is likely that a transitional period will be implemented, giving the industry plenty of time to familiarise themselves with the new regulations.

When it comes to being prepared for

any changes, the most important thing is to keep up to date with the announcements from Government. As the changes to Part L served as a ‘soft launch’ for the Future Homes Standard, it’s expected that most plumbing and heating installers will be able to adapt seamlessly to the changes. That said, taking the opportunity to upskill by undertaking training on heat pump installation or learning about innovations like underfloor heating will stand professionals in good

stead for the introduction of the FHS.

As a leading manufacturer, RWC and its family of brands including JG Speedfit, JG Underfloor and Reliance Valves, is ready to support installers meet new regulatory requirements with a broad range of future-ready solutions.

FAST FIT, NO FUSS

Ferneyhough, Country Director UK for DAB Pumps, highlights why fast-fit features and easy maintenance

are key

to choosing the right system for the job.

When traditional gravity drainage isn’t possible, automatic lifting stations offer a reliable solution for moving wastewater to where it needs to go. They are popular in extensions or loft conversions where routing conventional pipework is impractical and are particularly useful for retrofits, property upgrades and extensions, offering developers and installers the flexibility to deliver functional, compliant spaces in tight or unconventional layouts. Whether it’s a basement bathroom, a toilet in a garden office or a utility area on the wrong side of the soil stack, these compact units make it possible to add sanitaryware in previously off-limit locations – without the upheaval of major pipework rerouting.

While automatic lifting stations solve a practical problem, not all designs are created equal. When choosing a unit for a new installation or retrofit, installers should, of course, look for compact dimensions that suit tight or awkward spaces, along with quiet, reliable performance and features like anti-odour protection for added user comfort. But the best systems should be intuitive to install, quick to set up and easy to maintain.

The installation process starts at the point an automatic lifting station is selected, but with some ranges, the sheer number of options can make this harder than it needs to be. Too much choice can lead to confusion, delays or even the wrong product being purchased. A well-

structured range that covers all the key applications without overwhelming the installer is far more practical. The Genix range is a good example: just three models meet a wide variety of needs. The Genix and Genix WL are suitable for toilets, showers, washbasins or bidets, while the Genix VT has been designed specifically for grey water use, such as with sinks, washing machines or dishwashers. All three offer quiet, dependable performance for situations where gravity drainage isn’t available – without overcomplicating the selection process.

Keeping it easy

Ease of installation is always high on the priority list for busy installers where time is money. When you’re working in an occupied property or under pressure to meet project deadlines, a lifting station that takes hours to fit or needs half a dozen extras from the merchant, is less than ideal. A good lifting station should come with a complete installation kit and straightforward guidance in the box, so everything is on hand from the start. It should also offer intuitive assembly and connect easily to common pipe sizes

without workarounds or adjustments. Each model in the Genix range for example, comes with hose clamps, pipe adaptors, rotating delivery pipes and ground fixing screws – in fact, everything an installer could need. The kit also includes integrated non-return valves and quick couplings to make installation even less hassle, and the illustrated quick-start guide makes it clear what goes where, even in tight or awkward spaces.

While straightforward installation is crucial, so too is straightforward maintenance. Even the best systems can be misused – wipes, nappies and foreign objects still find their way into the system. When this happens, the last thing any installer wants is to dismantle pipework to clear a blockage. In too many designs, accessing internal components means removing the entire unit which requires cutting into the pipework. Not only is this messy and time-consuming, it also introduces the risk of leaks and a lot of commotion.

Simple maintenance

Units that have a motor that can be removed in-situ without disturbing the pipes or uninstalling the main box make a huge difference. This way, if a blockage occurs, the motor block can be unhooked and safely removed from the unit, flushed through and reinstalled – without disturbing any pipework. Easy access to internal components like the capacitor, electronic board, pressure switch and the grinding blades will allow the unit to stay in place during servicing, simplifying maintenance and keeping downtime to a minimum.

In retrofit and new-build projects alike, automatic lifting stations play a crucial role in overcoming drainage challenges and the most effective systems are those that are easy to understand, quick to set up straight out of the box and easy to maintain without disassembly. From streamlined ranges, clearer instructions and complete installation kits to careful designs that allow servicing in-situ, the focus has rightly shifted to fast-fit features and cleaner maintenance. As demand grows for smarter ways to bring plumbing into hard-to-reach areas, it’s these kinds of user-focused details that set the best lifting stations apart, helping installers stay efficient on site and giving customers confidence in a low-maintenance solution that’s built to last.

MOVING TARGET

reforms and the plumbing sector’s role in achieving housing targets

Labour’s pledge to ‘Get Britain Building Again’ comes with the promise of 1.5 million new homes over the next five years and plans to accelerate national infrastructure.

However, the latest housing supply statistics from the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government (MHCLG) show a 6% year-on-year decline in net additional dwellings. Therefore, the new planning reforms have been designed to make these ambitious targets a reality and speed up building.

But while making efforts to meet the quantity of new homes required there must also be adequate consideration for the quality of these new homes. Each stakeholder in the built environment –including the plumbing sector – has a part to play in reaching the targets and providing enough quality housing to the UK.

The Labour Party has also updated the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and created the Planning and Infrastructure Bill to tackle some of the main barriers to housebuilding.

This means that applications complying with local development plans could bypass planning committees

entirely. The plans outline £100m of new funding for local planning officers and mandatory training for planning committee members.

As a ‘New Homes Accelerator Group’ will be assembled to release thousands of partially-built homes, local authorities will be required to commit – but they will also be under greater pressure to deliver against their own ambitious targets.

The government’s proposed revised land use policies will see a ‘brownfield first’ approach to development and fasttrack planning application approvals on these sites. It has also reclassified over 11,000 sites of greenbelt land as ‘grey belt’. This is set to release land for around 100,000 to 200,000 new homes – 50% of

which must be affordable.

In widening the types of land we can build upon the sector is also going to encounter varying levels of difficulty in establishing flood defence and resilience, and will have to lean in the expertise of drainage experts.

Drainage strategies

From Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) that reduce flood risk to engineered drainage solutions for complex new build housing sites, each new housing estate requires a bespoke water management solution to ensure its long-term sustainability.

As planning reforms accelerate, without the right drainage strategy, increased urban development risks exacerbating surface water flooding and overloading existing drainage networks.

This is where the plumbing and drainage sector becomes essential. It must deliver systems that meet today’s building standards, but also futureproof new developments against environmental challenges. Recent trends suggest environmental extremes are becoming more commonplace. Higher levels of

rainfall in shorter periods of time and larger contrasts in temperature are putting existing and aging infrastructure under pressure.

Early engagement with plumbing and drainage manufacturers during the house building planning phase can help identify potential issues and tailor solutions to the specific needs of each site, particularly in areas with higher flood risk or limited existing infrastructure. The adoption of modern, efficient technologies can contribute to both environmental goals and have a knock-on benefit of cost savings for homeowners.

As the construction industry pushes on with the government’s housing targets, it’s vital that quality, resilience, and sustainability remain front and centre, with each stakeholder ensuring that homes are not just built quickly, but built to last.

Climate considerations

We also cannot afford to compromise on our progress to Net Zero in the race to

build 1.5 million homes over the next five years. Regulations such as changes to Part L and the Future Homes Standard are encouraging the creation energy efficient homes.

Yet, we need to broaden our focus across the supply chain and extend our focus to embodied carbon. Positively, we’re seeing more companies designing to deconstruct, rather than demolish, at end of life, and many are also opting for materials with greater recycled content.

We are committed to designing for sustainability, using recycled content in our plastic drainage and plumbing

systems, and want to encourage the rest of the sector to follow suit.

Moving forward together

When implementing reforms, the government cannot simply hand the reins back to local authorities, housebuilders and developers. There must be continued support as the industry adapts to new regulations, and changes to the NPPF.

Funding for local authorities and planning committees is welcome, but further resource is needed across the industry. This will be vital to ensure we can support better quality, more sustainable, affordable housing.

Polypipe Building Products works alongside housebuilders, developers, architects, and specifiers to navigate challenges, drive innovation, and deliver high-quality, compliant, and sustainable projects.

THE ENVEO ALL

Modern Methods of Construction for smaller contractors

The viability of off-site solutions, especially for the more compact projects, has been debated for many years. In recent times, however, with advances in the systems – together with contractors recognising the speed, efficiency and factory-controlled precision of the components – more progress has been made.

That shift in mindset is being played out against the backdrop of a housing crisis that has risen to near the top of the political agenda. Put simply, we desperately need more houses and, if we’re going to get anywhere near the projected targets, we need to do it quickly – without compromising on quality. If you wanted a manufacturer to help

achieve all of the above then Saint-Gobain would be a very good place to start. The brands that fall under this global building materials giant’s corporate umbrella can deliver virtually everything you need to construct a new build and do it with solutions that are already trusted by the industry. That’s a reality that has come to fruition in a new system that represents an industry first.

“The avowed Saint-Gobain vision is ‘Making the World a Better Home’,” explains the company’s head of public sector off-site solutions, William Frost,

“and that’s the principle behind EnveoVent. Because we’re already leaders in lightweight construction we can relieve some of the pain points for contractors, especially SMEs and regional housebuilders, by providing one system from a single manufacturer.”

When it comes to completions, the last time we actually delivered on the kind of new build numbers currently touted was in

“Although we have gained some momentum in MMC, the benefits off-site solutions are still misunderstood. Once that’s overcome, I can see it becoming the normal practice. The reduction in build schedules, combined with enhanced sustainability and performance levels really can’t be matched. We want to work with builders to help deliver.”

the 1960s so it’s clear something has to change It’s here that Saint-Gobain has utilised its established brands and expertise to introduce a through-the-wall system: “We’ve combined our British Gypsum, Isover, Okarno, Scotframe and Weber solutions into a Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) framework Category 2 panellised solution,” continues William “As a result, EnveoVent delivers on performance, speed of build and quality ”

Built for future homes

At the same time the flexibility inherent in the EnveoVent concept means housebuilders can differentiate their properties with a choice of either a Weber render or weberwall brick slip finish on the exterior, with further choices to be made in the interior Crucially, the contractor has one point of contact for the entire fabric of the build, with support from Saint-Gobain throughout, whether that’s in design or engineering An installation support team can be made available and there’s a complete performance warranty In addition, because EnveoVent can be purchased via a single transaction through Saint-Gobain Off-Site Solutions, the procurement process is radically simplified Clearly, speed makes this an attractive proposition Although completion times are dependent on the house type, the fabric of a pair of semi-detached properties, including floor cassettes, walls and roof trusses can be erected in as little as six days to make a weatherproof shell

Added to that is the elimination of individual installation errors that can occur with multiple trades following on from each other to complete the different stages of a traditional build

If our legislators’ housebuilding ambitions are to be realised it is, of course, going to take more than just speed We will also need a much wider pool of providers, which includes SMEs William Frost believes that this is very much a solution for the regional housebuilder or even custom build contractors: “We’ve developed this system so that Saint-Gobain technologies are available to as broad a demographic as possible, right down to self-build projects with a single house ”

Efficiency of build is equally complemented by impressive sustainability credentials, as William reveals: “The Future Homes Standard demands a 0 18 W/m2K U-value on the wall fabric, whilst the mineral wool insulation construction of the Saint-Gobain EnveoVent system delivers U-values between 0 16 – 0 13 W/m2K, depending on the wall type and thickness That’s joined by complete fire, acoustic and impact testing Moreover, with everything included for the build in a plot pack, waste is kept to a minimum and the number of site deliveries can be reduced

“Although we have gained some momentum in MMC, the benefits of offsite solutions are still misunderstood,” concludes William “Once that’s overcome, I can see it becoming the normal practice The reduction in build schedules, combined with enhanced sustainability and performance levels really can’t be matched We want to work with builders to ensure what is delivered is exactly what’s needed and provide a sense of security for the future.”

BATTEN DOWN

Ensuring

compliance

and quality with roofing battens for professional builders

When it comes to roofing, every detail matters. The integrity of a pitched roof depends heavily on the quality of its components – and roofing battens play a critical role in ensuring durability, compliance and safety. For professional builders, ensuring battens are fully compliant and high-quality is essential.

Kevin Taylor, Training and Technical Support Manager at Marley, sheds light on what makes a roofing batten compliant and why your materials should always meet the highest standards.

What makes a compliant roofing batten?

Any roofing battens used for slating and tiling must comply with British Standard 5534. This ensures the materials meet necessary durability, strength and performance criteria – offering peace of mind for builders.

It’s also important to look for battens with third-party accreditations, such as British Board of Agrément (BBA) certification. Although not required by BS 5534, third-party certification offers an added layer of assurance for builders, reflecting rigorous testing and guaranteed quality.

Each compliant batten should also have clear origin and supplier markings, as well as batch numbers for complete

traceability. This helps builders easily identify compliant battens when on site.

Machine-graded vs visually graded battens

Battens can be graded in two ways –visually (by eye) or by machine. Unless tightly regulated, traditional visual grading techniques, where battens are assessed by eye, can lead to inconsistencies and errors. Issues like knots, wane or distortion in visually graded battens may not always be spotted, potentially impacting the roof installation.

Machine-graded battens, such as Marley’s JB Red, uses the advanced technology of a Goldeneye scanner to ensure consistency. These battens undergo intensive evaluation using lasers and cameras, which detect any imperfections and confirm adherence to strict quality standards. By choosing machine-graded battens, builders can ensure they’re using reliable and precise materials that minimise on-site risks.

The significance of JB Red’s colour

Marley’s JB Red battens aren't just visually striking; their red finish serves

practical and compliance purposes. Here's what the colour signifies:

• Advanced treatment and protection: JB Red battens are treated with Koppers MicroPro® preservative to comply with BS 8417 Usage Class 2 requirements. This treatment provides long-term resistance against insect attacks and wood-rotting fungi.

• Easily identifiable on-site:

The distinctive red colour makes it simpler for site inspectors and builders to confirm compliance with grading standards, saving time and reducing errors on-site.

Prioritising sustainability and responsible sourcing

When it comes to material selection, builders are under increasing pressure to balance performance with environmental responsibility. Marley’s JB Red battens carry PEFC certification (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), meaning they come from sustainably managed forests.

Using environmentally certified products, like JB Red, strengthens a builder’s efforts to meet sustainability targets and demonstrates a commitment to responsible sourcing, which is an increasingly important consideration for both customers and regulatory bodies.

Explore JB Red roofing battens

Marley’s JB Red machine-graded battens combine innovation, compliance and sustainability, ensuring they lead the way in the roofing industry. With advanced grading technology, compliance with BS 5534 and robust treatment against fungal decay, JB Red is the ultimate choice for builders needing confidence in their roofing projects.

Andrew Cummins, Senior Product Manager at Purdy, highlights attributes to look out for when selecting roller frames and sleeves.

Just as with brushes, the quality and design of a paint roller system can make a big difference to the final finish of a decorating job, as well as the ease and speed of progress. Here’s some things to consider:

Roller frame

When you’re working on a large paint job, selecting a roller frame that is comfortable to use over a long period of time is essential. A lightweight but sturdy roller frame is the ideal solution – look for one with an open cage design that utilises lightweight materials to ensure minimal arm fatigue. An ergonomic handle is also recommended, ideally one with a rubberised grip to stop your hand from slipping – even when sweaty.

Frames designed to reduce sleeve ‘walk-off’ are also worth looking out for. ‘Walk-off’ not only adversely effects productivity, but it can make precision work almost impossible. To avoid this, look for a roller frame with a ridged design at the base of the cage, these allow you to press fit a sleeve, keeping it secure throughout the day.

ROLL WITH IT!

Adjustable frames are also useful if you’re likely to require a range of different roller sizes over the course of a job, allowing you to seamlessly switch from one size sleeve to another.

Roller sleeve

Roller sleeves vary considerably depending on the type of finish you want and the size of the wall you are working on. However, regardless of the specifics of the sleeve, you should always choose a product made from a good quality fabric that is thermally bonded to the core. Quality fabrics will also ensure that the sleeve doesn’t shed lint in your fresh coat of paint which can compromise your finish or result in wasting valuable. Synthetic fabrics offer the best combination of durability and suppleness. Purdy uses a knitted nylon and polyester blend for its Marathon roller, which will provide the same great finish every time, even after 40 hours of use.

The material that the core is made from should also be considered. Cheap cores can often react with the paint you’re using, losing their shape and comprising

the finish. To avoid this, look for sleeves with a core made of polypropylene, as this stable material won’t lose its shape.

Poles

Like adjustable frames, an extension pole is a great solution for maximising productivity and versatility without the need for lots of different gear. Fibreglass

and aluminium options are preferable to low-quality plastic as they will be able to stand repeated use and adjustment. Quick lock connections that enable faster set up times also help to ensure you can swap out different sized rollers with ease.

Accessories

Finally, selecting the right accessories can also help to make you more efficient and extend the lifespan of your equipment. A simple but effective option is to purchase a bucket or skuttle with a proper lid, allowing you to keep paint in it overnight or between coats, eliminating the time-

consuming process of decanting and refilling. Looking for additional features like integrated pouring spouts can also help to make your life easier when you do need to empty your bucket.

Alternatively, liners designed to fit your bucket are a great option if you are going to need to change colours. These remove the need to completely clean your bucket between paints, ensuring you can maximise productivity during the day and tackle cleaning at another time.

Painting multitools are also a great solution for improving efficiency. Tools such as the Purdy Brush and Roller Cleaner simplify the cleaning process with the inclusion of a scraper, so you can remove the excess paint from roller sleeves and return it back to the tin, reducing waste and making your roller easier to rinse clean. Cleaning your roller thoroughly in this way will also help to ensure that it lasts as long as possible and will continue to perform like new, whilst minimising paint wastage.

There are loads of great products out there to help make your job easier and allow you to get the best finish possible with your rollers. However, the simplicity and efficiency provided by a complete roller system from a leading brand will minimise wasted time and help you to get the job done quicker. FOR

The R260DCT-Li cordless disc cutter has arrived and looks to exemplify Evolution Power Tool’s mission to engineer smarter, safer, and more powerful tools for professionals who demand the best.

Trade in mind

Designed with the trade in mind, Evolution’s R260DCT-Li cordless disc cutter specialises in concrete cutting and delivers petrol-like performance without the hassle. The 260mm (10”) blade cuts deeper than many 300mm (12”) models. With a maximum cut depth of 102mm (4”) it easily slices through bricks and blocks in a single pass, maximising on-site efficiency.

Efficiency meets endurance with the all-new EvoMax blade too. With a thinner kerf, optimised for use with the cordless disc cutter, it cuts 60% faster and lasts 4 times longer than the manufacturer’s general-purpose diamond blades.

The EvoMax blade and powerful 36v brushless motor combine to deliver

longer run times and industry leading cuts per charge. In internal testing the saw achieved 16.2m of cutting on a single charge, 40% more than the leading competition it was up against when cutting 450x450x35mm paving slabs.

Safety first

Dust suppression has been carefully considered as well. Evolution’s patentpending automatic water-fed dust suppression system boasts an automatic valve that lets the water flow as soon as you press the power trigger, and the blade starts spinning. The water then cuts off when you release the power. A separate independent control valve allows you to “set and forget” the flow rate. This all couples with a self-adjusting Blade Guard that makes for consistent water distribution as well as easy angled cutting.

Fatigue won’t be an issue with a lighter, ergonomic design that offers unmatched handling. The wheeled skid plate supports long, straight cuts with ease, while the

Designed for the 40VMax XGT range, the tabless lithium-ion cells eliminate the bottleneck caused by current concentration by connecting the entire end of the electrode to the end of the cell, instead of connecting to tabs at each end.

Werner and BoSS are urging construction industry bosses to prioritise a stronger focus on safety, following a study which suggests that the sector has the poorest attitudes towards health and safety. Health & Safety Executive HSE statistics for 2024 recorded 50 fatalities due to falls from height in the UK between 2023-2024. Falls from height accounted for 36% of the 138 worker deaths during this same time period.

PLIERS AND SPIRIT LEVELS

The new green Draper Expert colourway signifies that each tool is 100% made for the trade. There’s 32 pliers in various singles and sets, with high leverage, water pump, long nose, circlip pliers and more to choose from. Amongst the 12 heavy-duty spirit levels and sets are stubby levels and a 2 metre long model.

TITANIUM HAMMER

Professional carpenters or roofers should reach for the new Estwing Titanium hammer. A patented Locking Taper permanent steel face ensures long-lasting durability and, at just 14oz, the titanium construction is designed to reduce fatigue while still packing the power of a much heavier hammer.

SAFETY FOOTWEAR

The latest safety trainer from Totectors has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Award for product design excellence. The Rushden combines the latest technology with a streetstyle silhouette. It has been introduced for professionals who desire to keep their look, without sacrificing the highest standards of safety and comfort.

A D ILY CONSTITUTIONAL

The IVECO ethos has been based on transferring much of its HGV experience to a lighter vehicle. Strength is very much in the brand’s DNA. Indeed, vehicles start from 3 ½ tonne and above and this is the only manufacturer that offers vans from 6-tonne to 7.2-tonne, with a whopping 19.6m3 of potential load space at the top end.

At the same time the manufacturer is treading with a lighter carbon footprint by pioneering multiple powertrains, adding battery electric, compressed natural gas (CNG) and, through a joint venture with Hyundai, hydrogen to its conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) models. Moreover, there’s further choices to be made with either a 6-speed manual or 8speed HiMatic auto.

What that should tell you is that this is a manufacturer that likes to do things a little differently to its contemporaries and that’s demonstrated in the E-Daily. It’s IVECO Daily’s truck chassis, unique on vans, that allows it to go beyond 6-tonne in weight. It’s also an ideal place to site battery packs in an electric model. That

Living with the IVECO Daily will never be a grind!

then allows for a modular approach where a number of batteries can be positioned under the vehicle’s cargo bay, thereby maximising the available range.

Up to four can be achieved on the 5.1metre wheelbase, in fact, which IVECO anticipates will give you a 150-mile range when fully loaded. You can even add or remove batteries if required, which is no

more than a two-hour procedure in an IVECO workshop. It should be noted, of course, that range can vary widely according to driving style, urban or motorway driving and temperature. The building industry is the most diverse of sectors and tradespeople will learn how to make the most of range when living with the vehicle – and using it on your

typical jobs. Fast charging can get you up to 62 miles in just 20 minutes.

Whether it’s panel, tipper, dropside or crew cab the E-Daily can deliver. Towing has proved problematic in EVs but not so with IVECO where its battery powered solution provides a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, easily enough to transport a decent sized mini digger with a few buckets from site to site.

Smooth performance

When it comes to diesel only around 30 per cent of the van market is now automatic, but it would be fair to say that some of examples have not been the smartest, requiring a good long hard think about changing gear before actually getting around to doing it. By contrast, IVECO’s vans are over 60 per cent auto, and that’s a testament to the smooth interrupted performance of its Hi-Matic box. It is, in fact, imperceptible at times which is equally good news for fuel efficiency and wear and tear. Having said, some builders who are driving on looser surfaces may well prefer a manual. The entire IVECO Daily line-up is rear wheel drive, which makes for a more rugged and responsive product.

IVECO’s safety technologies can be divided into passive and active technologies, with the former including a redesigned cab that protects the driver from frontal or side impact. Side impact protect airbags are also standard – but

it’s in the active field where it gets more technically advanced.

A whole suite of safety features are facilitated by a unit positively bristling with cameras, sensors and radar right around the vehicle. Advanced Lane Centering keeps your van in the centre of a lane and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go keeps pace with the vehicle in front, stopping when it does. Any van driver will be accustomed with a cyclist creeping up the nearside unseen and it is here that Blind Spot Warning is your friend. In addition, automatic electronic braking will apply the brakes if you’re in danger of a head on collision –and put the vehicle into park into the bargain.

A 7in. digital infotainment screen is standard on ICE and 10in. on electric with a 10.25in. digital instrument in front of the

driver on all models. These displays are fully configurable to allow exactly what you want to be shown. The touchscreen is very responsive with none of the frantic and frustrating stabbing at it you can find with other manufacturers, whilst some physical controls – for air conditioning as an example – have been retained.

Riding in comfort

All this falls easily to hand from your hydraulic HGV-style style seat – another feature unique to IVECO on vans – with the added comfort of memory foam. This is all complemented by a new wireless charger for your telephone. Four USB ports, two of which are USB C, with Keyless Entry & Go.

Anything you want to do with you IVECO Daily can be achieved with E-Daily – with some more besides in terms of driver comfort. That means the same payloads on the 4.25 tonne electric compared to the 3.5-tonne diesel.

The Millbank Proving Ground offers a variety of driving experience amongst them a high-speed bowl, an alpine hill route, a steering pad, and handling circuit.

For a big vehicle the IVECO Daily remains nimble, with a class leading turning circle, and it navigated the tight turns on the circuit effortlessly. Again, thanks to some clever electronics, the steering is actually lighter at low speeds and heavier when travelling faster.

POWER UP!

Electric vehicles are a source of contention for many, particularly those in the trade with concerns over range and payload capacity. Here to put these worries to rest is Ford with its E-Transit range, now (thanks to the addition of the Courier) offering a full range of electric commercial vehicles, from a compact city-goer to a classic full-size panel option.

The PB team was lucky enough to be invited to Barcelona to the Powered by Ford Pro event, celebrating this now complete range as well as the Ford Pro software/ ecosystem. Time to get behind the wheel!

E-Transit Courier

Small but packing a hefty punch, we got well acquainted with the Courier as we couriered ourselves through the mountainous region surrounding Barcelona for a few hours. While this may not be the average driving experience for a jobbing builder (the latter third trying to navigate the city’s bustling traffic seems more appropriate), this time with the Courier really gave a good feel for the thing on the road. For those unfamiliar with being behind the wheel of an electric vehicle, the experience is decidedly different to its four wheeled combustion engine counterpart. Driving in an EV just feels easy. It’s responsive, quiet and, more than anything, smooth. The

PB test drives the all-new Ford E-Transit Courier

aforementioned jaunt through busy Barcelona to get to our destination felt a lot less stressful than anticipated thanks to this calmingly compact blue chariot. Blind spot alerts on both mirrors and the range of on-board safety systems became invaluable in particular, as well as that immediate feedback when you put your foot down. Turning on regenerative braking is a doddle too with just one easy physical button, allowing you to make the most of you kinetic energy and feed it back into the battery (parituclarly handy when going downhill).

On the spec side of things, the all-new E-Transit Courier offers up to 300 km of zero-tailpipe emission driving using a 43 kWh battery and 100 kW e-motor.A 700 kg gross payloadis on offer with 25% more load space than the previousgeneration Transit Courier – with room for two Euro pallets. Total cargo volume is

now 2.9 m3, but can be further increased using the new load-through bulkhead feature, which enables customers to carry items such as planks or pipe over 2,600 mm long.

Charging from 10-100% using the van’s 11 kW AC onboard charger takes about 5.3 hours, which, for home charging, can be scheduled to take advantage of cheaper overnight energy using the invehicle touchscreen or dedicated charging software. Indeed, Ford Pro offers a home charging solution that includes expert consultation and training, installation and maintenance of a Ford Pro Home Charger, as well as software to make planning and paying for charging and easier proposition.

For time-efficient public charging, the vehicle offers DC fast charge capability up to 100 kW – adding approximately 100 km of range in 10 minutes and a 10 - 80%

charge in approximately 23 minutes. The van also comes with a year of complimentary access to the BlueOval Charge Network with more than 36,000 charging points installed in the UK.

The “digiboard” instrument panel contains a 12-in. digital cluster and 12-in. centre touchscreen with Ford’s latest SYNC 4 system. Naturally, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard.

E-Transit

While the E-Transit Courier was something entirely new for the electric scene, one of the range staples has seen a huge upgrade too. The E-Transit –Europe’s best-selling two-tonne electric van– now sports an enhanced range option with a 89 kWh battery for up to 402 km electric driving and faster charging than the 68 kWh standard range variant. Designed for operating on longer routes or supporting higher power needs, the enhanced range E-Transit comes in van and double-cab-in-van body styles, comprehensive length and height configurations – and also as a single chassis-cab. With this new upgrade, a 10minute charge can add up to 116 km of driving range, and a 10 - 80 per cent charge takes approximately 28 minutes.

What’s more, the enhanced range ETransit is also equipped as standard with an innovative Vapour-Injected Heat Pump. Designed to improve energy efficiency and optimise range in colder weather this presents a handy bonus for our more unpredictable UK climates.

An integrated mobile power source features on the E-Transit too, with a 2.3 kW (10 amp) supply delivered directly

from the hefty vehicle battery. This means you can charge or power most of your electric hand tools directly from within the cabin or cargo area, even on the move (no more turning up to site with an almost dead drill!).

This enhanced E-Transit is also something we got our hands on with in Barcelona. Much like the Courier, it was a joy to drive. Thanks to its electric motor and host of smart features, (particular shout out to the constant rear-view camera disguised as a traditional mirror) it doesn’t feel like you’re driving something ungainly. Instead, you’re delivered an almost spaceship-like feel, humming down the road in comfort, almost floating above the traffic.

Choice

The reality is, despite how far EVs have come and how superb this new range from Ford is, electric still won’t be for everyone. The payload on the larger ETransit, for example, stands at just 705kg

in a L3H2 350 body thanks to the weighty powerful battery. Range anxiety is still prevalent too for those who often travel up and down the country (although we often overestimate our annual mileage). What Ford seems to have understood, is that choice is the best way to go here. As the range and recharge time of EVs continues to improve, Ford is able to offer more and more options to assist with the switch to electric. As an example, while the payload for the E-Transit may be troublesome for some, the E-Transit Custom still sports a gross payload of 1,038kg in the L1H1 variant.

Consider too that the US giant is still bringing out combustion options and hybrids like the all-new Custom PHEV and Connect PHEV. We took these for a spin and they’re a brilliant option for those not ready to take the full plunge into EV yet. The Connect in particular features an ingenious FlexCab™ option that allows for seamless transition from extra passengers to pure cargo. Choice is really the key here with a vast number of van and battery sizes, which will be instrumental to the UK’s electrification. Overnight combustion bans from above (looking at you, ULEZ!) seem ill thought out in favour of encouraging manufacturers like Ford to keep developing technology that encourages the change and supporting the infrastructure to match. The carrot will always be preferable to the stick.

The FlexCab™ variant of the Connect PHEV is a great example of choice in the Transit range

THIS CITY IS OURS

Professional Builder continues to chart our journey with our long-term loan vehicle – the Toyota Proace City Electric

When you list the reasons why you might want to convert to a battery electric vehicle then the driving experience should rate pretty highly. As much as a trowel is to a spreader or a saw to a chippie, your trusty workhorse is an indispensable tool of your trade. That doesn’t mean you can’t make the experience of living with it as enjoyable and comfortable as possible, of course, and the Toyota Proace City certainly delivers.

The first feature to shout about is the noise levels. Modern diesels are far more unobtrusive on the ears than their forebearers but they’ll still never be able to compete with an electric motor on decibels. Indeed, they are so quiet that when sat at the steering wheel –especially when switched on and parked – it does take a bit of getting used to.

Now let’s examine running an EV on the road. One of the standout features of electric is the performance. If you were to line up an electric van and an internal combustion engine vehicle together on a track, the former can deliver maximum torque from a standing start whilst the ICE is still labouring through the gears. What that means in practice is a very satisfying level of acceleration.

In an LCV of relatively compact

dimensions – such as our Toyota Proace City Electric – the amount of power at your disposal from a commercial vehicle is actually very surprising. Added to that is some equally impressive handling.

Lithium-ion batteries are quite heavy and, when they are arranged under the cargo area – as they are on the Proace City – it has the effect of more readily sticking the vehicle to corners.

Of course – and contrary to popular opinion – the average white van man or woman are actually very careful drivers. With all your tools and materials in the back you can’t really afford not to be.

Having said that, driving a vehicle that can shift a bit when cargo contents allow will make for a more satisfied owner.

There are three driving modes on the Toyota Proace City – Normal, Power and Eco. When you turn the key to start your day the default setting will be Normal, whilst you can move to one of the other two options via a switch on the centre console. Choosing Eco does have a noticeable effect on the performance, and it will reduce the efficacy of the air con. At the same time, in our estimation, it does seem to preserve the charge to a noticeable degree. The Power setting provides even more impetus to what is already a nimble performer.

Now we move on to the gear changes of which, of course, there aren’t any. Automatic boxes on diesel commercial vehicles have a bit of checkered history and it is still the case that you’ll need to select a van from the premium end of the market to source a van with a transmission without a satellite delay to changing. By contrast, the Toyota Proace City seamlessly glides up or down in speed without no intervention from the driver required.

Overall, then, it’s clear that switching to electric means you will actually enhance whatever pleasure you might glean from driving. Next month we get to the business end of any van, which is the load area and vital statistics.

ALL BETS ARE OFF

In the UK, gambling is a common activity that many people do for fun. You can bet on sports, go to arcades or stay up all night in a casino. Playing the lottery, using online games or putting money into investments are also all forms of gambling. You can gamble in person or online. You can spend £1 or £10,000 on a single bet. There are often no limits unless a person self imposes them and this is the problem. Gambling may be fun if you are in control and know when to stop, but if you don’t the implications can be huge. The effects of gambling can be devastating for the sufferer and their families.

So, when does having the odd bet turn into a gambling disorder? Gambling disorder is a repeated pattern of gambling behaviour where the person:

• feels they have lost control

• continues to gamble despite negative consequences

• prioritises gambling in front of other interests or activities.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists UK estimates that roughly 1 in every 100 people have a gambling disorder. There is no one cause for someone to develop gambling addiction –it could happen to anyone. There are recognised risk factors to developing it which include:

• Being a man – men are 4x more likely to have a gambling disorder than women

• Ethnicity and race – ethnic minority backgrounds may be 7x more likely to develop addiction

• Having a family history of addictions –especially your parents

• Personal history of gambling –witnessing or experiencing a big win at an early age or early on in your gambling experience makes it more likely you may run into problems

• Consuming alcohol or using drugs

• Having another mental health condition already – depression, anxiety, personality or psychotic disorders

THIS MONTH GP ALICE FITZGIBBON TALKS ABOUT AN ISSUE WHICH CAN LEAD TO MENTAL STRESS: GAMBLING.

their spending and the impact of this can be life changing. Having uncontrolled gambling disorder causes huge harm to an individual’s mental health too. It can lead to poor sleep, anxiety, low mood, mood swings, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and even attempts at suicide. It may well be a contributing factor to some people committing suicide. This is why being aware of gambling and its impact is so important so that people can get help or learn to stop gambling before it escalates to being a huge problem.

• Working in a ‘risky’ environment where gambling is prominent – betting shop, casino or arcade

• Having financial difficulties

• Taking some medications which alter dopamine (the ‘feel-good’ chemical) in our brains such as Levodopa for Parkinson’s disease or aripiprazole for psychotic disorders.

Gambling disorder can lead to devastating and long-lasting financial harm. Getting into debt can lead to being unable to pay bills, unable to meet repayments for mortgages or loans, borrowing money from family, friends or high interest loan companies, bankruptcy and poor credit scores. Some people even turn to illegal activities such as embezzlement or fraud as a way to seek out more money to continue gambling or hide the affect it is having.

When gambling takes over your life, every area can suffer. Not being present or constantly preoccupied at home can lead to relationship strain along with arguments about finances. Some people are not honest with their partners about

So, what can be done about gambling disorder? As with other addictions, it might not be as easy as “just stopping”. If you think you have a problem, seeking professional help is advised. Talking about your problem and acknowledging it is an important first step.

On a practical front, there are many simple and practical measures that can be taken quickly to limit gambling – putting gambling blocks on your bank account, moving money so you cannot access it for gambling, using GAMSTOP

WWW.RDR.LINK/BBQ107 – a free online gambling self-exclusion programme which prevents you using UK registered online websites and apps when you register, or MOSES (Multi Operator Self Exclusion Scheme) which lets you ban yourself from betting shops

Gambling addiction can be treated with medication, cognitive behavioural therapy and 12 step support programmes such as Gambler’s Anonymous too. If you are worried about gambling or someone else’s behaviour, then early intervention is important. There is lots of help available to support individuals and their families impacted by gambling.
