“If garages see fewer vehicles being booked in for MOT work, then, naturally, there are going to be fewer parts ordered from motor factors. It is bound to have a knock-on effect throughout the whole motor trade. Motor factors rely on us to order components – without these orders, what will they do?

“We see vehicles for their annual MOT, and while we have their cars, customers will generally ask us to carry out a service too. If they don't come in for two years, we believe there would be safety issues with worn parts, in some form or another, which would go un-noticed.
“Another worry we have: if stand-alone MOT garages, which don't do repairs, only see vehicles every two years, will they survive and be able to stay open? If they can't function financially and have to close, where will all these vehicles go when their two-year test is due?

I suspect we’ll receive an answer on whether the MOT frequency will indeed be increased to every two years or left alone. Before our own summer recess, I received an e-mail from joint workshop owners, Andrew and Karen Carter, of Carters of Vowchurch in Herefordshire, responding to my last viewpoint about this issue. Consequently, it triggered a brilliant conversation about the subject but also extended to other industry matters.

We now know whether it's Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss who has taken possession of the keys to Number 10. At the time of writing, inflation has reached double figures and pay in ‘real terms’ has shrunk by 3%, so it’s safe to say there’ll be no honeymoon period for the new prime minister. With the summer recess now over and the new PM in place, we’ll start to discover how the government is going to support the public and businesses in adapting and overcoming this tough period.

A new IMI report, Automotive Sector Employment, has claimed an aging population, decreased immigration and ‘green agenda’ are creating a major skills challenge for the automotive labour market. Despite forecasting a 2% decrease in the number of jobs available in the automotive industry by 2031, the report highlighted that rising employment replacement demand, due to retirement, migration and occupational mobility, will “significantly contribute to the expected and unprecedented number of available vacancies”.Therole most in demand will be the vehicle technician, which will account for 16% of vacancies, said the report.
IMI CEO, Steve Nash, said: “The industry faces its biggest skills challenge of the last two decades. We have been lobbying government, the automotive industry and the education sector for a long time to invest in addressing the shortage in qualified EV technicians, and the majority have stepped up to the challenge. But our latest report worryingly reveals that the UK’s lack of EV skills is just the tip of the iceberg. “An aging population is a significant contributor to the dilemma. Many of our older workers are set to retire over the coming years and fewer younger workers are joining the labour force. Without doubt, more needs to be done to attract young blood into the UK’s automotive sector.”
“At the same time, prioritising training and equipment is key to garages looking to enhance their capabilities and widen their proposition, especially as today’s data reiterates increased demand in the used plug-in market.”
After the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders announced an overall fall in used car sales, but revealed an increase in battery electric vehicles in the second quarter of 2022, LKQ Euro Car Parts CEO, Andy Hamilton, reflected on the latest figures: “Whether or not more used vehicles are changing hands than in previous years doesn’t change the fact that the UK car parc is ageing, especially as supply issues continue to frustrate order fulfilment in the new car “This, market.combined with more drivers dropping out of dealership servicing earlier in search of a more affordable service, means there’s a real opportunity for independent garages to grow their share of the “Spreadingaftermarket.the word locally and investing in a credible online presence is key for those looking to win new customers.

The team at Autosupplies Chesterfield was on the receiving end of a specialist Mintex training evening, presented by TMD Friction’s technical experts, which detailed the braking company’s manufacturing processes and product care advice. TMD Friction Head of Technical Training, Scott Irwin, and Technical Sales Representative, Stuart Incledon, delivered the session to Autosupplies staff. The seminar covered the bedding in procedure, where brakes are run-in to assist in smooth braking operation and transfer a layer of friction material onto the disc, and the use of chamfers, shims and slots to prevent noise and vibration from the pads. As well as an overview of the manufacturing process, the sales team were taken through how Mintex verifies brake pads and discs are operating and the pitfalls that some garages may fall into if parts aren’t fitted correctly, with the masterclass culminating in a quiz and presentation of Managingcertificates.AutosuppliesDirector, David Clarke, said: “The Mintex masterclass training was great, and the whole team will have benefitted enormously from it. It was formed by Derrick Williams MBE, who set up the charity following a trip to Tanzania when children asked if he could provide a ‘proper’ football kit. One box of kit from friends was sent to a village and the response was incredible, so it was decided to continue KitAid. Since then, more than 870,000 items have been sent to projects across Africa, South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. NGK donated a pristine past kit, which sported the logo of customer PITSTOP Autofactors of Mildenhall, and also donated £200 to KitAid.

GSF Car Parts ‘condenses two-year rebrand programme into six months’ T he journey began in November 2021 and in that time GSF has fitted new signage, changed more than 1,000 vehicle liveries and installed new branding across all of its stores. All members of staff have received shiny new uniforms. In addition, it has opened nine new branches – the latest being St Helens in July – taking the overall tally to 185 across the UK and Ireland. GSF has also bought 300 vans to complement the openings. It’s here Mark and I began our conversation, and I started by asking him if it was fair to describe GSF’s approach as ‘aggressive’:“Itdependson your perspective, doesn’t it?” he replied. “In my view, optimistic is probably more accurate.
We've worked tremendously hard and accomplished what we set out to do. We have a single brand, a single message and a consistency that is the accomplishment of a two-year programme condensed into six months.
Home is where the heart is GSF Car Parts is part of Uni-Select, a distributor of automotive refinish and industrial coatings in North America. When
After overseeing a rebrand that saw GSF Car Parts transition from a dozen local trading identities to one national brand, the motor factor’s president and chief operating officer, Mark Eburne, offered us the opportunity to quiz him on how the concept turned into reality.
PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR SEPTEMBER 2022 I 11 PEOPLE & INDUSTRY INTERVIEW
On the locations of the branches, I was curious to learn the strategy behind them –was it a case of filling gaps or bolstering regions where demand was particularly high? Mark was candid in revealing how GSF goes about its business: “We look for whitespaces between our existing branches, where we think there’s the greatest opportunity to infill a branch to support the network. It’s a balance of reason; we structure our branches into regions, we try and keep all the regions the same size; therefore, we spread the branch openings geographically around the country, so that the regions can thrive.
“We try balance that with the belief that branches work better in packs. If you run more than one branch in a region, they can feed off each other and more resources can be used to bed them in and support them as they become an ‘up-to-speed’ GSF branch.”

“The recruitment challenge is not unique to GSF – it’s an industry challenge.”
Uni-Select announced that The Parts Alliance would become GSF Car Parts, introducing one trading name across all of its sites, it enabled the former to revert back to its role as a trading group and GSF Car Parts, Dingbro and Qualvecomm running as three entities. Mark hailed it as a “milestone moment” and marked the beginning of an “exciting journey”. At the same time, he identified opportunities to “expand, diversify and upskill”. When GSF Car Parts announced the opening of its Yeovil branch, it was revealed that there was a mixture of existing GSF staff and new recruits making up the team. When pressed on whether this was a deliberate tactic, Mark replied: “Absolutely!” He continued: “We have enough density that we can open branches with some element of new and existing staff – it’s a formula that’s always worked well for us, and we’ll continue to do that should the opportunity arise. “Using Yeovil as an example, the manager and assistant manager both live in the town, but worked in branches inand-around Somerset, so when we opened the Yeovil store, we were fortunate that we had two senior colleagues that could step into those roles – it’s always an advantage, if your staff know the area and people they’re selling to.”
How is GSF staying on top of availability? With a national distribution centre in Birmingham, home to parts and consumables for all makes and models, tools and garage equipment, all of which supply independent garages, national The team at Camborne.

Challenge of recruitment
One of the hot topics of conversations within the market – we’ve shared some of them inside issues of Professional Motor Factor this year, both from a factor and supplier point of view – has been on the subject of recruitment and how we, as an industry, can demonstrate the value and appeal of working for either a garage, distributor or supplier.
I took the opportunity to ask Mark if recruiting, not just people but the right people, was straightforward or a tough process: “We’re finding it more and more difficult to find good people, at all levels. There’s a scarcity of labour for every role. We don’t receive many applicants for jobs – some we do, but most of the time we “It’sdon’t.not just an automotive problem; whatever business you’re in, recruiting people is a challenge, and no-one is finding it easy.
“We employ over 2,500 people, so we get retirements, natural churn, expansions, business change, so we’re constantly on the recruitment drive. The difficulty is finding the appropriate person and them wanting to stay for the long-term. We find that once staff have stayed with us for at least a year, they’re more likely to stay for the“Weforeseeable.findthat people with more experience and want stability, are more loyal to the business, so, naturally, they will perform better in their role – it’s about attraction and retention. We’ve done a lot in terms of improving benefits and offering flexible working, trying to make GSF an attractive place to work.

“Sometimes,own-brand.ourown products are manufactured by the OEM. In other cases, we audit the factory and specification, in which case we back-to-back test the product to ensure it is of OE equivalent specification and quality. “On filters, for example, we guarantee that our filters have the same proportion of paper inside the same OE specification and offer the same filtration capability. On brake pads, we test the friction material, we test the pad as if it was being tested for OE. It’s taken a decade or two to build up a comprehensive programme of OE product that we’re happy with.

chains and retail customers, GSF Car Parts is “fortunate in the sense that we can cushion from some of the (availability) effects by the fact we keep stock”. It’s no secret that availability is an issue that the industry is facing, but because a third of what GSF Car Parts sells is its own brand, it’s in a strong position, according to Mark. He added: “We have a very strong ‘own brand’ proposition – about a third of what we sell is our own brand, and two thirds is original equipment (OE) products. We sell very little aftermarket –approximately 95% of what we sell is either OE or own-brand, and we only sell OE quality
“We measure the warranty claims we receive; the warranty claims on our OE product, without exception, are as good as or better than the OE quality product that we sell.” The future? When presented with the opportunity to talk to the head of GSF Car Parts, it would’ve been remiss of me to not ask for his views about the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) and how GSF, as well as the industry as a whole, will evolve. He predicts the industry is going to “change beyond all recognition in the next five to seven years”, that the impact of EVs and hybrids will have a “profound effect” on the automotive aftermarket, and the transition is “happening faster than everyone thought, and the pace willHequicken”.confirmed GSF Car Parts was gearing up for the future and, specifically, EVs, and that the “winners will be those that take market share”. How the next few years play out will be fascinating; however, one thing is for sure, GSF Car Parts is ready for the challenge and will continue with its optimistic, bullish philosophy to increase its market share, grow year-on-year and, in Mark’s words, “be the best in our industry”.

“For garages and end-users fitting UFI Filters products, we can guarantee genuine UFI products when they are bought directly from our distributors. Indeed, we always recommend buying our filters only from our distributors and being wary of unofficial channels. We train motor factors on how to distinguish a fake filter from an original one. “At a group level, these measures have been further strengthened by specific training sessions delivered at the most sensitive customs agencies, focusing in particular on products that are subject to the greatest counterfeiting activity, such as those from the ONE family of UFI Filters. “We have tightened the surveillance measures and have further extended our internet business intelligence activity globally, in partnership with CONVEY, a company based in Italy specialised in internet and brand protection services. This monitoring activated has resulted in the interception of more than 2.5 million illegal parts transactions on the major marketplaces at global level and succeeded in removing more than 8,000 commercial advertisements posted on 33 e-commerce platforms, preventing a potential turnover of more than €5 million in counterfeit goods sales.”

There are many JLM products that will keep vehicles running in optimum condition, which should be on a motor factor’s shelf and featuring in its weekly promotions.Takethe JLM GDI Cleaner, for example, it cleans the tip of the injector of direct fuel injected engines, with more efficient fuel injection and less fuel consumption as a result.JLM’s Petrol Extreme Clean, another bestseller, is used by mechanics during vehicle servicing. It’s the solution to late model cars and engines with severe build up problems in various parts of the fuel system. These contaminations are tough and hard to dissolve with regular fuel additives. The special detergent in this formulation cleans the fuel system – including injectors, inlet and outlet valves, spark plugs and combustion chamber – restoring engine power and promoting fuel economy. Often when a car is being serviced, the oil is changed. When a mechanic adds JLM Engine Oil Flush to the oil before replacing with fresh oil, even old and very dirty engines are cleaned with a corresponding improvement in engine performance and a reduction in fuel consumption. These are just a few products from the JLM stable that a motor factor can promote.
riving fuel efficiently is a hot topic, but if a tank of fuel is to last longer, vehicle maintenance is vital. Motor factors are at the centre of this because their trade customers hold the keys when it comes to attaining optimum vehicle health. A healthy vehicle burns less fuel. For any motor factor, making sure they have high quality additives in stock enables their trade customers to place repeat orders, knowing they won’t have to wait for the additives they use during servicing, repairs, and for ongoing vehicle maintenance. At Kalimex HQ, JLM sales are rising from our motor factor stockists, fuelled by our presence at trade shows and our marketing, which is to signpost any enquiry from a mechanic to their local factor.
Motorists can’t fight the price at the pumps, but they can trust their mechanic to use best of breed maintenance and prevention products to improve fuel economy; by stocking high-margin JLM products, a motor factor will build revenues from additional repeat sales because their trade customers will keep coming back for more. With UK fuel prices remaining high, vehicle maintenance is a priority for motorists wanting maximum miles from their tank. The independent mechanic is key in ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained and regularly serviced, while motor factors are equally crucial in ensuring stock levels are maintained and upholding excellent lines of communication. Mike Schlup, managing director of Kalimex, the UK distributor of JLM Lubricants’ product range, has his say:

Importance of promotions
JLM is a brand motor factors can trust; for many years JLM has collaborated with topflight mechanics; Darren Darling, the founder of the independent DPF Doctor Network, being a fitting example. Darren and many of his ‘doctors’ will road test a JLM product before it’s launched, to ensure it does what it says on the tin. If motorists want to run their vehicle fuel efficiently and keep repair and service bills down, they must trust their mechanic to use premium quality additives over parts whenever possible.

Its Classic 20W-50, for example, includes a ‘tackiness’ additive to ensure that the metal surfaces are coated with a protective layer, which prevents condensate from adhering to the metal surfaces – particularly important if a car is going to be laid up for the winter.
Extending the opportunity further Engine oils provide the central requirement for historic vehicle lubrication, but there are many other lubricant and fluid requirements and, of course, caring for a vehicle is as important on the outside as it is under the hood. Motul has, therefore, extended its Classic range to include coolants, cleaners and vehicle care products, which, like its engine oils, are designed specifically for classic car maintenance and care. This offers further opportunities to deliver the optimum product to owners and extend the upsell as related work.

Meanwhile, Nissens guides readers through the installation of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve; however, before diving into the step-by-step, the company explained what can cause damage: “As the valve operates in a harsh environment, under thermal stress and the direct influence of the flow of exhaust gases, there are many factors that can cause its premature failure. The following are the most common reasons, and their root causes must be recognised and eliminated effectively: excessive contamination by carbon build-up, thermal stress and EGR system leaks.” Nissens also advised: “Perform an OBD diagnostic scan to specify the failures related to the valve, but remember that error codes for a specific sensor or malfunction may not reveal the root cause of the problem. Often, the errors are stored due to another problem in a related system/component, causing the inspected sensor/device to send improper readings. It is, therefore, important to analyse and recognise the real cause of the malfunction before replacing parts.”

Engines are becoming smaller, whilst drivers are expecting comfortableincreasinglyandrive, so how can the Syntium range help achieve both?David replied: “A vehicle’s performance is vital to the driving experience and is directly linked to ride comfort. Most engines only convert around one third of their potential fuel energy into power; the rest is left unconverted or disappears as waste heat. Excessive heat can cause damage to critical engine parts, such as turbochargers, pistons and bearings, which, ultimately, affects the driving experience. The Petronas Syntium range enables motorists to unlock peak engine performance for a more stable car and a smoother ride.”

Traction Charger outlines the key differences between the similarly named Lithium-ion (LCO) and Lithiumiron (LFP) batteries: “LCO batteries have the chemical symbol LiCoO2 and LFP batteries LiFePO4, so we can see that the immediate difference is that one contains potassium and the other contains cobalt. It is these core elements that are the main active materials in these two battery types and give them their distinctive differences. “LCO technology has a relatively short lifespan, with low thermal stability and limited load capabilities. It requires a slow charge. Crucially, though, it also has a high energy density and no memory effect, and can deliver power over a long period, which offers a great option for smaller electronic devices that need“LFPrecharging.batteries are, in general, less powerful than a LCO battery. They have a much longer lifespan: LCO cycle durability is between 400 and 1,200, and lasts around 13-18 years; whereas, LFP is more like 2,000 cycles, so, in theory, should last more like 50 “LiCoO2years.is considered hazardous; it can cause allergic reactions to the eyes and skin when exposed; whereas LiFePO4 is a non-toxic material and can be disposed of more easily. Lithium-iron phosphate has generally excellent thermal and chemical stability, staying cooler in higher temperatures and at low risk of combustion, whereas LCO batteries have a higher flammability rate.”

Ecobat addresses the future of EV batter y recycling
Ecobat plays an essential role in the collection, recycling, production, and distribution of energy storage solutions. Its pan-European battery distribution business, Ecobat Battery, and collection and recycling division, Ecobat Solutions, provide battery collection and recycling management services to empower sustainability efforts around the world.
Ecobat Battery European Marketing Manager, Thom Poole, said: “The lithium battery, which is generally the battery of choice for vehicle manufacturers (VM) globally, is an incredibly effective power storage solution. “It is virtually maintenance-free, is lighter than a traditional lead-acid battery and smaller in size for the same power output. It provides a longer service life, delivers more charging ‘cycles’ and can be discharged to higher levels between charging; however, it is expensive to produce and, in stark contrast to lead-acid batteries, difficult to recycle.”
That’s where Ecobat comes in: to address the EV battery recycling dilemma, Ecobat Solutions’ UK site has been diagnosing, disassembling, discharging, reengineering and recycling lithium batteries for the last 18 months.

As a result of hotter temperatures during the summer months, more drivers may expect to suffer vehicle battery failure in winter, according to Ring Automotive.
“Considering the challenges inflicted on batteries, thanks to summer temperatures, Ring has developed a range of battery chargers and analysers that help technicians stay on top of battery maintenance and diagnose faults. The battery care product line features a wide range of tools providing both factors and garages with several upselling opportunities.”
Ring emphasises importance of battery health – in summer
Drivers and technicians should preempt winter battery failure following hot summers by utilising new battery analysis technology to stay on top of vehicle maintenance, as warm weather can affect vehicle battery chemistry and cause untimely failure, the supplier reported. Flat batteries are mainly caused by wear and tear, and the aging process –but prolonged heat in summer is often the reason for the spike in battery failures experienced by drivers in winter, rather than the colder climate as is commonly assumed. Ring Marketing Director, Henry Bisson, said: “The chemistry within a vehicle battery is far more active in hotter weather, which speeds up the aging process. Chemical reactions within the battery can double for every extra 10 degrees of heat, so when winter comes around and more power is required to start the vehicle, there’s nothing left in the battery to deliver as the cells have dried out – leading to untimely failure.” Combatting the searing sun Considering the challenges inflicted on batteries, thanks to summer temperatures, Ring has developed a range of battery chargers and analysers that help technicians stay on top of battery maintenance and diagnose faults. The battery care product line features a wide range of tools providing both factors and garages with several upselling opportunities. Ring’s SmartCharge RSCP5024 (top-right) and RSCP60T products are designed with the professional in mind, delivering 50 and 60A continuous charging respectively, to deal with the demand of 12V and 24V battery recharging during diagnostic or data upload work.
The new range of professional charging equipment features smart charge technology, which optimises battery performance and improves the ability to hold charge. RSCP5024 has two dedicated charging curves, seven stage for lithium batteries and eight stage for all other chemistries, optimising the battery’s performance and improving the ability to holdAlsocharge.available in the graphical battery analyser range is Ring’s RBAG750, which can provide a complete health check of the battery and electrical systems of a 12V and 24V vehicle. RBAG750 will detect battery charging problems by checking that alternator voltages fall within normal operating ranges, and checks for potential starting problems by measuring battery voltage drop during engine cranking.
Ring has also developed the RSC804 (top-left), RSC806 and RSC808 smart battery chargers and maintainers, to keep drivers safer on the roads and be able to easily restore power to their motorcycles, cars, 4x4s, vans or trucks.

Why is lead-acid technology being used in a modern EV?
VARTA AGM batteries have proven their reliability for years, making them an ideal companion in supporting the 12V electrical system of electric or hybrid EVs. Their sturdy construction and behaviour, as well as their safety, make them a reliable and robust power source.
An electric car’s high-voltage lithium-ion battery powers the drivetrain and the propulsion system, but not the whole vehicle and its electrical power net. The internal electrical 12V power net system, with its comfort and critical safety features, is powered by a 12V lead-acid battery, also known as an auxiliary battery. It works as a secondary power source for the vehicle’s electrical system and ensures that the car maintains its functionality while driving. When parked, the highvoltage battery is disconnected from theComfortdrivetrain.and safety features, like lane assist, front assist or the occupant protection, are handled by onboard smart systems, which also draw power from the 12V net system. The same goes for most of the car's monitoring functions, which are operated by automatic control systems. This, in turn, increases the need for a reliable, high-performance power supply.
The VARTA 12V battery portfolio is engineered to support both today's and tomorrow’s EVs. VARTA batteries deliver energy for crucial safety systems, comfort features, and fuel-saving functions. They also have spare capacity to power vehicle systems that aren’t yet available. Every major car manufacturer is entering the EV market with battery electric or hybrid EVs. VARTA products are fulfilling all OE requirements, which is why well-known vehicle manufacturers, such as Mercedes, Volkswagen and BMW, are fitting their cars with VARTA batteries.
VARTA offers insight into future lead-acid technology
For more information about VARTA, www.rdr.link/FFM009
What’s more, increasing levels of vehicle autonomy have driven the 12V battery to become a critical safety component.
A s more electric vehicles (EVs) enter the aftermarket, their emergence has intensified the demands of low-voltage power and is redefining the role of the 12V battery.
PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR SEPTEMBER 2022 I 29 BATTERIES
As cars become more electrified and autonomous, the traditional 12V lead-acid battery is taking on a new and challenging responsibility, according to VARTA Technical Sales Manager, Andrew Cook:
VARTA products “fulfilling all OE requirements”
Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand, are known to be both reliable and affordable. Their wide operational temperature window enhances the operational toughness of the entire system. The safety record of lead-acid batteries makes them invaluable for Europe’s future low-emission mobility sector. Lifecycle analysis of a vehicle’s environmental impact show that leadacid power has a lower impact compared to other technologies.
Lithium-ion technology is often considered the successor of lead-acid technology when it comes to batteries; however, it is not as inherently robust as other battery technologies and requires continuous monitoring by the battery management system. Overall, it is a very sophisticated technology.

With all the publicity surrounding the growth of EVs, it’s worth remembering the fact that irrespective of the powertrain, all vehicles rely on steering and suspension components to drive smoothly and safely.
It has long been a Dayco priority to raise awareness of best practice methods when replacing components, which is why we’re keen to highlight the importance of replacing steering and suspension components in pairs, and motor factors can play a key role in ensuring that their workshop customers are aware of the facts and why they should respond to them.
Dayco continues awareness of best practice methods
This is an important safety message, because even though these items wear continuously in normal use, they also wear in unison and although that does gradually affect steering performance and ride quality, it’s obviously not noticeable to the occupants day-to-day; however, if a wishbone or stabiliser, for example, is replaced on just one side of the vehicle, it can have an adverse effect on the vehicle’s handling as, in effect, its geometry has been altered on one side and not the other, which can potentially cause problems.
Despite the publicity brought about by the slump in sales of petrol and diesel vehicles and the increase in demand for electric vehicles (EVs), Dayco National Sales Manager, Steve Carolan, is here to serve a reminder that the changing landscape will have “little effect” on the steering and suspension market:
R
As a result, following the introduction of wheel bearings, Dayco now offers a comprehensive range of more than 3,300 original equipment (OE) equivalent steering and suspension components, which include axle joints, tie rod ends/assemblies and steering boots, as well as track control arms, ball joints, stabiliser links and bushes.
ecognising the global shift from traditional internal combustion towards hybrid and electric powertrains, we constantly assess our product portfolio to reflect the needs of the independent service and repair sector.
In addition, due to the generally poor state of the UK’s roads, damage due to potholes, speed humps and aggressive curbs, is an ongoing issue, as it’s these parts that generally take the brunt of an impact with any of these obstacles.
Alongside these features, additional benefits from both a factor and installer’s perspective include the fact that where ancillary items, such as fastenings and clips, also need to be replaced when a component is fitted, the Dayco kit comes with all the necessary replacement items, which makes life easier for technicians and provides factors with the ideal one-box solution for their workshop customers.

In 2017, Citroën launched the C5 Aircross, manufactured with KYB as the original equipment (OE) supplier for shock absorbers. With active suspension systems becoming increasingly popular in passenger cars and semi-active solutions becoming present in more segments than ever before, this collaboration between KYB and PSA introduced a new suspension concept: a passive shock absorber capable of reaching the “high performance of semiactive systems but at a significantly more competitiveFollowingcost”.anomination for the 2019 European Car of the Year Award and winning the 2019 CarWow Comfort Award, KYB was awarded a supplier excellence award from PSA following this successful development.
KYB brings double hydraulic stops to the aftermarket
KYB said it is the only company to offer these parts to the aftermarket, and, currently, there are more than 150,000 C5 Aircross’ on European roads equipped with double hydraulic stops.
Following award wins, rave reviews and ambition to support both workshops and motor factors, KYB is proud to share details of a new product launch.
In this area, the system will act like a conventional shock absorber, with the valving towards the centre of the piston and the base valve providing the damping force.
This split allows the shock absorber’s main valves to focus on comfort, and the two hydraulic stops to take responsibility when more demanding situations are encountered, such as road bumps and potholes, thus increasing both comfort and handling performance.
The first part corresponds to the position around the centre of the stroke.
The secret of this concept is a double hydraulic stops system – with a stop positioned at each end of the piston rod.
The total stroke of the shock absorber can be divided into three differentiated parts, for which the shock absorber will provide different characteristics.
The second and third part corresponds to the positions closest to the end of the rebound and compression strokes, with the hydraulic compression and rebound stops working together to provide additional energy absorption. When the piston rod compresses, the stop at the bottom of the internal cylinder is also compressed, laminating it in oil and dissipating the energy in the form of heat, gradually slowing the movement of the piston rod without returning it.
How does it work?
KYB Europe Aftermarket Marketing Manager, Jordan Day, said: “Having this technology available to the aftermarket is an exciting addition to our existing range and will allow motorists to continue to enjoy the award-winning comfort these shock absorbers offer. It’s another great example of how KYB is at the forefront of OE suspension research and development.”Formoreinformation about KYB, www.rdr.link/FFM011
The technology, named ‘Progressive Hydraulic Cushions’ by Citroën, provides a comfort level described as a “flying carpet effect”. Until now, the system has only been fitted to brand new vehicles; however, KYB Europe has made it available as an aftermarket part (3348095 available immediately, while 3448033 is in preparation and stock should be available in the next few months).
KYB said the patented technology makes the car feel like “it’s flying over bumps and holes in the road”.

First Line Ltd. first introduced its steering and suspension programme back in 1992, bringing a 1,000-reference portfolio to aftermarket professionals. Since then, the company has consistently averaged around 200 brand new steering and suspension parts each year – with more than 9,100 references now available, providing a range across passenger car and light commercial vehicles.
First Line Ltd. eyes more aftermarket growth
With steering and suspension parts a safety critical product group, in addition to the continuous growth of the ageing vehicle parc, First Line Ltd. says it is perfectly positioned to provide a premium quality aftermarket offering for more cars than ever before.
Meeting the trend
As the UK vehicle parc continues to evolve, with electric and hybrid vehicles gradually entering garages across the country, First Line Ltd. said technicians require aftermarket solutions to enable them to carry out servicing and repairs on these applications.Italsostressed the importance of having original equipment (OE) specification parts available in the aftermarket, so that workshops can service and maintain this new breed of vehicle, while futureproofing their business. Each month, the company provides new-to-range bulletins, highlighting the updated coverage for various new electric and hybrid vehicles, particularly its steering and suspension range. Highlights include suspension arms, ball joints and stabiliser links, which are available for Tesla’s Model S, the Vauxhall Corsa E and Volkswagen’s electrified range of ID 3 and ID 4 cars. Every new reference is released only when available in stock, and each is provided with a complete, detailed application guide, plus technical information and images across platforms, such as TecDoc and MAM, as well as First Line Ltd.’s WebCat.

What else do factors need to know?
Astratech is a new brand that uses all BG Products’ research and development facilities and knowhow, and it produces that automotive chemistry at very competitive prices.
Astratech utilises much of the advanced chemistry, such as polyether amine, and is blended to appeal to the twin needs of high levels of effectiveness alongside attractive and practical pricing.
The Astratech range focusses on products that will help motorists restore engine efficiency and power, as well as lower emissions and prolong engine life. BG Products’ laboratories have been awarded ISO 17025, which recognises, amongst other elements, that the laboratory delivers competence, impartiality and consistency. This impartiality is a key part of the BG Products/Astratech ethic. The products are consistently tested under laboratory standard protocols, meaning that when BG/Astratech make a claim about effectiveness, it is backed up by results.
Engine manufacturers (through the Worldwide Fuel Charter by ACEA) recognise that polyether amine is a key ingredient in helping to clean – and keep clean – combustion chambers and fuel injectors from hard-baked carbon. Astratech PA-06 and PA-07 contain chemistry that is formulated to give a deeper clean.
The current Astratech range is completed by PA-02 Engine Oil Treatment, an oil enhancer that helps to compensate for worn engines. It is very effective at reducing or even eliminating smoke from worn engines.

Changing the dynamic of BG’s offering
The new brand BG has been aware that its traditional approach to the market –blending chemistry that is designed to be best in class – has meant that BG has always been a premium priced product. Fleet operators and many workshops want or need the very best and so BG has been able to satisfy that market area.
Product spotlight 34 I PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR SEPTEMBER 2022
The technical bit BG Products has introduced two ranges for motor factors to stock up on. Powerflow, BG’s UK distributor, has made the traditional range available, while it has also launched a new brand – Powerflow Director, Paul Dobbyn, explains why: BG Products launches Astratech
Also, modern engines have lower piston ring tension than previously. This lower tension allows oil vapour to deposit behind the piston rings more easily, which, in turn, restricts the rings in their ability to flex and centre, leading to a reduction in compression and increase in blow-by – neither are good for the engine. Astratech PA-01 is an engine flush that is very effective at removing old oil, sludge and has a proven record of restoring compression. Other products in the range will prolong oil life, like PA-03 Oil Conditioner (for petrol) and PA-04 Oil Conditioner (for diesel), by maintaining oil viscosity for longer, controlling acid and soot formation. This means longer engine life and less emissions.
