Literally, as I was reading the key points about income tax cuts and corporation tax rise cancellations, National Insurance hike U-turns and energy bill price caps, I received an e-mail from LKQ Euro Car Parts' PR team, which contained a response to Kwasi Kwarteng's announcement.
The reply came from Andy Hamilton, LKQ Euro Car Parts’ CEO, which included the following: “The package of tax freezes and cuts unveiled – from the National Insurance rise reversal, and cut to the basic rate of income tax – will no doubt help, and ensure consumers have a bit more in their pockets to spend on their vehicles. But I’ll be looking to the budget proper later this autumn for more specific support for small businesses and our sector.”
He elaborated further by identifying the reforming of business rates and support for workshops that need to invest in future skills, such as EV qualifications, whether that be via grants or more tax breaks.
For all automotive businesses, but especially those that desperately need it, I sincerely hope this first set of measures is an impactful step in the right direction – what do you think of the chancellor's mini-budget? How will it impact you? As always, you can e-mail me at tom@pmfmag.co.uk.
Andy Hamilton’s mention of training and upskilling is actually apt, as, in this issue, we’ve got a fantastic article that highlights how you can take advantage of the updated Delphi Technologies Academy training platform.
Introduced last year, Delphi Technologies says the online portal provides quick and straightforward training on all aspects of modern vehicle repair and maintenance, which will be invaluable to you when selling parts and tools.
I encourage you to check out the comprehensive article on pg 14. Elsewhere, we have shared an article written by Kalimex’s retained marketer, Dee Blick, who explains how you can use marketing to your advantage.
She reveals how Kalimex, the distributor of JLM Lubricants products, is supporting “proactive stockists” in building repeat sales and tells a story from a previous initiative:
“Recently one factor stockist benefitted from a significant sales upswing from just two small campaigns. They sent out Phone your Factor leaflets with trade orders and via the post. A staff member then phoned their VIP trade customers. These campaigns work well delivering ROI for a small outlay. We will create these high impact leaflets at no charge for any JLM product factors would like to promote.”
If you’re keen to learn more and investigate the idea of your own campaign, turn to pg 18. In the meantime, have a great month and catch-up in November.

IAAF Academy launched to support aftermarket growth
The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has launched a new training academy, designed to train, develop and upskill new and existing people working within the automotive aftermarket.
The IAAF Academy will “evolve substantially” when the new IAAF website goes live later this year, but the organisation says it has moved quickly to implement and promote initiatives and courses that support its growing membership.
From virtual to practical training, the IAAF Academy will cover all areas of an automotive aftermarket business, helping companies and their teams learn and familiarise themselves with new technology and legislation, while also enhancing personal development skills.
A key focus of the Academy will be engaging with schools, colleges and universities, working closely with School of Thought. IAAF has also set up partnerships with Heart of Worcestershire College, West Notts College, and East Coast College, as it looks to provide education settings with a deeper look into the workings of the trade.
West Notts College, with the support of IAAF member HGV Direct, has successfully set up a parts advisor apprenticeship for car and CV motor factors, and IAAF Academy will be working to
Car Spares Factors opens sixth branch in Waltham Abbey
Car Spares Factors (CSF), a car parts, accessories and consumables supplier, has opened its sixth outlet – thus extending its reach in London, Hertfordshire and Essex.
Opened at the end of September, the Waltham Abbey branch has been completely refitted for CSF’s purposes, and a new team has been recruited and trained so that the business was “up and running from day one”.
CSF’s other stores include New Southgate (Head Office), East Barnet, Haringey, Park Royal and Welwyn Garden City.
CSF Director, Sanjiv Shah, said: “We’re very excited to open our latest branch in Waltham Abbey.
“We’ve always planned our growth carefully, making sure we’re in the right place for our customers and that we can always deliver the top-quality service we’ve committed to. It’s great to be able to expand the business into this area at the same time as launching our new app, which makes business life easier for all our customers.”
Available from both Apple Store and Google Play Store, the CSF app allows busy garage owners to order parts on the go.
CSF was established in 1977 and has grown both organically and by acquiring other smaller parts suppliers. With a focus on

What’s more, IAAF Academy will be assisting East Coast College with guest speakers from its membership of automotive suppliers and arranging site visits to aftermarket businesses.
IAAF Chief Executive, Mark Field, said: “I’m really excited by the potential of IAAF Academy. It will open the industry up to not only new entrants as we support their integration into the industry, but educate, train and support existing people and businesses as we continue to raise standards throughout the distribution aftermarket.”

Glen Callum Associates invests in candidate support with new website features
As part of its commitment to supporting jobseekers in their search, Glen Callum Associates (GCA) has added a number of tools to its website, with the aim of making the process as efficient as possible.
The GCA website now includes a ‘login’ section, which enables jobseekers to set job alerts to ensure they don’t miss out on the latest opportunities.
The tool will alert the jobseeker by e-mail to any new roles that match their criteria, enabling them to tailor their experience specifically for their job-search requirements.
The website has also been updated to allow jobseekers to bookmark any jobs they are interested in, allowing them to revisit and keep up-to-date with these roles.
What’s more, the site now includes a ‘send your CV’ prompt as part of the login section, encouraging candidates to regularly update their CV so they can be accurately matched with the most relevant roles available.
There is also a ‘my account’ icon at the top right of the screen, which, if clicked, will send users to a login screen to access their account, or to register one.
GCA Director, Kerrie Richards, said: “These small but beneficial additions to the website have been added to make a candidate’s job hunt as straightforward as possible.

Comline makes its mark at Automechanika Frankfurt 2022
Comline is in buoyant mood following a “hugely successful” Automechanika Frankfurt, heralding the event as the perfect platform on which to raise brand awareness and strengthen its footprint across international markets.
After a forced four-year absence, the parts brand was thrilled to be back in the German metropolis, and returned with the largest exhibition stand in its history and representatives from across its multinational operations in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Greece.
However, despite this strong presence, admittedly, there was an air of uncertainty at Comline before the doors opened, as it was unclear if Automechanika Frankfurt could deliver significant visitor numbers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Comline says those fears were soon quashed, however, and reports that demand and appreciation for the prominent trade fair remains strong. This was evident by the interest received by the brand during the event, with on-stand enquiries from more than 45 countries across the five-day period.
Those figures complement and support Automechanika’s official numbers, which showed more than 78,000 visitors from 175 countries and 2,800 companies from 70 countries exhibiting.
Comline General Manager – Marketing and Communications, Leigh Davies, said: “Preparations for Automechanika Frankfurt 2022 stretch back many months. The Comline stand was meticulously planned and carefully designed, with the ultimate ambition of enticing visitors to engage with
NGK-backed Speedway star takes maiden British title
NGK-sponsored Speedway star, Dan Bewley, has lifted his first British Championship after winning the rescheduled final in Manchester with a six-ride maximum.
The Cumbrian rider bounced back from a disappointing Kaeser FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla, where he managed just two points, by winning his five heats.
He then won the grand final to top the podium ahead of runner-up Tom Brennan, also sponsored by NGK, third-placed Craig Cook and Danny King in fourth place.
Dan’s British title triumph continues what has been an incredible season for the Maryport-born racer, who stormed to back-to-back Speedway GP wins in Cardiff and Wroclaw, Poland last month.
John Money, of NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “Dan has enjoyed a remarkable season and winning the British title is further evidence of him becoming one of the world’s top riders.”

“With the level of interest gained over the course of a committed and unwavering five days, it’s clear to see the strength of our brand proposition, and that Comline is continuing to connect with business owners and professionals from across the global aftermarket.”
Arnott reports on successful Automechanika Frankfurt
Arnott displayed its range of air suspension parts at Automechanika Frankfurt, which included the ‘pre-launch’ of its new WABCO compressor for the BMW 5-Series G31.
The ASE-3735, a new front electronic strut for the Land Rover Range Rover Sport L494, was also ‘pre-launched’ during the trade fair. The strut is Arnott’s first active shock with its own, in-house, developed valve. This was hailed a “huge milestone moving forward”. Both parts will have their official launch in the near future.

PMF introduces this month’s movers and shakers, as they begin a new stage of their career in the UK aftermarket.
Movers & Shakers
OSRAM and Ring
OSRAM and Ring have appointed a new workshop solutions van sales manager, Ehsan Ali, after receiving “widespread interest” throughout the UK and Ireland for the joint initiative since it hit the road earlier this year
The concept has been embraced by many customers, according to the companies, and as it continues to grow in popularity, Ehsan will be on hand to bring the latest in automotive lighting, and garage and workshop tools and equipment direct to customers and their independent garage customers.
As part of his new role, Ehsan will also deliver technical advice and product demonstrations, and he is excited about the prospect of supporting customers and the wider aftermarket in a face-to-face and direct capacity: “I’ve already had the opportunity to
catch up with a number of customers and can’t wait to take to the roads and get in front of technicians and really highlight the value that OSRAM and Ring products can bring to their workshops.
“We invest significantly in research and development, and as part of this, all product ranges are constantly being updated to include the latest technological innovations to meet the ongoing demands of a modern workshop.”
The boldly branded van is equipped with award-winning inspection lamps, bulbs, and professional tyre care and battery care products. Technicians can see, feel and try them before they buy!
A visit to a garage or workshop will last approximately one hour and will take place with a representative of the local OSRAM and Ring distributor in that area.
PCL has appointed Lee Wright as managing director to lead the company’s move towards a “more market-driven approach”.
Lee has taken the helm at PCL’s Sheffield-based headquarters. Previously, the position was part of Joerg F Mayer’s remit as group managing director at PCL’s parent company, HORNGROUP Holding.
Joerg has assumed the role of nonexecutive chairman, whilst Roz Shepherd and Dean Battersby remain as finance director and company secretary and operations director respectively.
Having been with the company since January 2019, Lee has in-depth knowledge of PCL’s customers and markets, and aims to bring a new energy and focus, together
with a more customer centric approach.
Lee said: “There is a lot to do, we have a huge agenda, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to take things forward. Operations will be crafted around customer needs, beginning with spearheading improvements in our lead times, processes and workflows and new product development delivery – meaning that service levels are streamlined to develop and enhance the customer experience.
“In the new role, I will continue to lead the sales and marketing effort within the business, so I will be regularly talking to our customers in order to better understand their needs and embed their requirements at the apex of the business.”

Shaftec ‘growing its business both in the UK and in Europe’
It’s been great getting to know Shaftec’s talented roster, but we’re not done just yet! In this latest instalment, Export Sales Support, David Griffiths, describes in detail how Shaftec flourished, both at home and abroad, in an “incredibly difficult business climate” with the uncertainty of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Q
Tell me about your day-to-day role at Shaftec?
David Griffiths (DG): “Supporting our export customers with their everyday demands, which includes updating backorders, placing stock orders, technical advice, price and availability enquiries, organising core returns and express orders, and creating reports for our European export sales manager.
“Our response times are under one hour, which enables our customers to
provide their customers with information very quickly.”
Q How would you summarise Shaftec’s export business?
DG: “We aim to build great working relationships with our customers – this is key. Daily tasks have been made more challenging with the current affairs in Europe; however, despite this, with our availability and response times, our export business is growing.”
Q Where is Shaftec strong?
DG: “Availability, customer support and services tailored to the customer. Our flexibility allows us to provide our customers with outstanding service and high relevant value.”
Q
Brexit – how did that alter the business dynamic?
Does it continue to have an impact?
DG: “As a result of Brexit, there are more export declarations to complete, but in terms of shipping schedules there has been no difference.
“At Shaftec, we are aware of how fortunate we’ve been, to not only have weathered the Brexit and COVID-19 storms, but to have actually thrived, growing the business both in the UK and across Europe in an incredibly difficult business climate.
“But it would be wrong to attribute this position to pure luck, as we invest heavily in long-term planning and strategic forecasting. We work closely with

TecAlliance to be able to offer our customers the most reliable and up-to-date technical data.
“I’d like to pay tribute to every single Shaftec employee for their hard work, tenacity and innate ability to understand that if we weren’t able to offer the excellent customer service that we do, I’m not sure that things would be looking so positive.
“Keeping up to six months’ worth of product at all times meant that whatever the situation in terms of Brexit and COVID19, our customers saw no change in supply chain status. We ensured a seamless supply of our full range of remanufactured and new braking, steering and transmission components from our UK-based business, via our customers, consistently reached the UK garages, allowing the wheels of businesses further down the supply chain to keep on turning.
“Operating under one roof from our central Midlands-based facility means that we have almost complete process control. Literally everything – from old core
the garages – we’d been planning for Brexit for years. I think because of that, when the world was literally upended with the shock that was COVID-19, we were already in a good position.
“It helped that to enhance efficiency, bolster productivity and amplify our square footage, we consolidated the entire business into one facility in 2015. Three
from OE suppliers abroad, like brake caliper seals.
“And because we maintained a healthy stockholding and ensured consistent levels of availability to keep our customers satisfied, we’ve been able to dedicate time and effort to think about the post Brexit and COVID-19 future.”
QDo you use the experience gained in the UK to help with Shaftec’s export business?
DG: “Yes, absolutely! I worked in the technical department for three years, which enabled me to develop a knowledge of all product groups.
The training received from Sales Manager, Marc Wise, has been imperative to the success of our export department.
“With the great support of my colleagues, I’ve been able to transfer my knowledge of the UK specific market and processes to our European partners. Export Sales Manager, Kornel Kulcsar, has an extensive knowledge of the European

Delphi Technologies Academy helping motor factors ‘make sense of modern vehic
According to Delphi Technologies, motor factors have a unique opportunity to get one step ahead of their competition by taking advantage of the updated Delphi Technologies Academy training platform.
Introduced last year, the online training portal provides quick and straightforward training on all aspects of modern vehicle repair and maintenance, which will be “invaluable” to factors providing parts and tools to the service and repair industry.
It benefits from regular updates and works to provide an insight and understanding on some of the latest technologies that are being introduced onto vehicles. For motor factor personnel, Delphi Technologies believes this level of information could be difficult to access, but the Academy ensures it is delivered as conveniently as possible.
For example, understanding the needs of the latest EV repairs opens up a raft of retail provisions, as the hazardous voltage found on EVs demands specialist equipment and tooling. Understanding the way it works, as well as how to repair it, will equip forward-thinking motor factors to meet the needs of their customers.
But it’s not just electric and hybrid vehicles that are covered in the Delphi
Technologies Academy. Autonomous features, such as adaptive cruise control, emergency braking and advanced headlamps, all provide a revenue stream. Delphi Technologies reports that these complex systems require some investment to fully understand, so trained motor factors will be ready to serve customers.
Learn the acronyms!
Each online course is IMI Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited, so staff benefit from education and training that is recognised across the industry. Each video includes an overview, concluding with a quiz to test learning; for instance, the ADAS overview breaks down a whole host of acronyms. It explains the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) classification of ADAS systems from Level 1 (driver assistance) to Level 5 (no steering wheel, completely autonomous). As these technologies progress, the vehicle parc is beginning to adopt higher levels of autonomy – Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ capability can accelerate, brake, steer and change lanes without driver input.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is a good example of a technology that has filtered down from luxury vehicles to more mainstream cars. It uses a radar to monitor traffic ahead, to maintain a safe distance
from the vehicle in front, then accelerate to a set speed when the road ahead is clear. It’s even fitted to smaller, inexpensive cars, like the Toyota Yaris, and such features have also been available on commercial HGVs for some time.
ACC is often paired with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), a useful driver aid in urban environments. AEB uses a radar to scan for hazards ahead, and automatically applies braking if it senses an imminent collision. Both systems rely on a carefully calibrated radar facing forward, sometimes mounted in or behind the grille or front bumper.
Huge strides in headlamp technology
Delphi Technologies’ advanced lighting technologies course takes just 25 minutes to complete, and discusses the various types of lighting used on contemporary vehicles. Most will be comfortable with commonplace tungsten/halogen bulbs and xenon lighting, but Delphi Technologies says that newer LED and laser lights require a level of knowledge that its training can deliver quickly and cost-effectively.
Instead of being a passive component, adaptive headlights become an active system reliant on data from a calibrated camera installed on the car. The aim is to
14 I PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR OCTOBER 2022 BUSINESS & TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
produce an intelligent, dynamic beam pattern that provides optimal vision for the driver, while protecting surrounding traffic from being dazzled with excess light. Something as simple as incorrect tracking can upset these functions.
Of course, being at the front of the car, headlamps, cameras and radars are vulnerable in frontal collisions, and, thus, make up a high-turnover part for insurance repairs. Appreciating this technology, and being ready to answer questions from the trade, represent a huge opportunity for business for motor factors, according to Delphi Technologies Aftermarket UK and Nordics Technical Services Manager, Luke Garratt.
He said: “We recognised the increasingly urgent need for the aftermarket industry to have access to vehicle training a long time ago. The Delphi Technologies Academy online tutorials, such as the ADAS suite of videos, are part of our solution to help address the huge shortage in motor factor personnel having the skills to understand and support ADASequipped vehicles.
“The industry is changing fast, with autonomous technologies and
electrification changing the landscape for motor factors. Just as traditional parts supply is a profit opportunity, retailers need to be aware of how these systems work, and how they can fail. Fulfilling the demands of repairers who are tackling these vehicles is a huge opportunity for motor factors and should increase loyalty from customers looking for the latest level of knowledge. With the technology being so fresh, the Academy training content is suitable for those who are just starting out
on their career right through to the ‘greybeards’ of our industry.
“By offering technical support above and beyond parts supply, motor factors will increase loyalty from their customers. In the highly competitive world of aftermarket retail, those that understand new technologies will be best equipped to help busy garages get their customers back on the road.”

Autoelectro launches part identification initia tive – by using WhatsApp!
Autoelectro is encouraging motor factors to take advantage of a simple but effective tool if they are struggling to identify an alternator or starter motor –by sending images of the parts to the rotating electrics specialist on WhatsApp!
On receipt of the images, one of Autoelectro’s experts will be able to help by identifying the part in question, as well as answer any queries
How does it work?
1. Autoelectro advises the user to take a minimum of three photographs; the images need to be taken square-on and include front, side and back of the alternator or starter motor
2. Then the individual composes a message that includes business and contact name, and information related to the part, such as original equipment number, application detail or engine manufacturer, if known
3. Send the message and images to +44 7972 804336
4. One of Autoelectro’s experts will give that person a call within 30 minutes of receipt
The leaflets are free to download from the Autoelectro website –www.rdr.link/FFN002 – but the factor must be a website account holder and logged in to do so. Registering is quick, easy and free!
Why has Autoelectro produced these leaflets?
Part number identification can be a tough and time-consuming task for motor factors, due to the quantity of references available but also because of the number of obscure parts that they might have to track down – perhaps a Triumph Herald or a Corvette C7, or maybe something off-highway, like a tractor, boat or excavator.
With an “excellent track record” in handling requests from distributors, generated by a 36-year database and a wealth of experience, Autoelectro says it is a product specialist in this sector; therefore, it is well equipped to ensure a motor factor receives the information it needs and quickly.
Autoelectro believes this solution will increase factors' confidence and knowledge when trying to convert enquiries into a sale, thus leaving their customers with a feeling of professionalism and an experience where they know their distributor is an expert in the rotating electrics category.
Autoelectro UK Sales Manager, Nick Hood, who has started to communicate this initiative to motor factors in the field, has received encouraging early feedback.
He added: “This is another illustration of how Autoelectro is using its pedigree to the advantage of the motor factor. We hope our customers will download and pin up these posters inside their branch, as it will strengthen confidence and communication between themselves and their customer.”

Strongline Autoparts ‘modernises company’ with Autopart Online
Strongline Autoparts decided that Autopart Online was the solution to modernise its company. Autopart Online is a “versatile business management software that integrates sales, stock management, accounting and reporting processes in one easy-to-use package”.
Autopart Online is also a cloud-based solution, with servers located in a data centre. A cloud-based solution increases security, removes the need for on-site servers, and the maintenance required to ensure they run effectively, according to MAM.
Strongline Autoparts Director, David MacNeany, said the move to Autopart Online was a success: “Almost 100% of the set-up was via remote implementation without any downtime.”
Once implementation was complete, the company observed significant improvements across their system – David continued: “The
first thing staff noticed was the speed improvement. Previously, our salespeople would be waiting around for processes to complete and now they were happening instantly!”
The staff also revealed how easy it was to save files directly to their desktop, while printing capabilities had increased.
David added: “The printing may as well be a local printer – it’s that good! No matter the printer type, there are no dropouts.”
While Autopart Online aided Strongline in its day-to-day processes, David also noticed how well the change from on-site servers to cloud solutions aided the business: “We were having to come in on a regular basis to fix or reboot the server; for example, there may have been a Microsoft update in the middle of the night, and this would generally stop the end-of-day completing. With Autopart Online, none of this is a problem, as it’s all taken out of our hands, and I can’t remember the last time a day-end has failed.”
Using a cloud-based solution ensures that all Microsoft updates and Autopart version updates are conducted by MAM and are done out of hours to ensure this does not disrupt working hours. A move to MAM’s cloud-based solution ensures data is protected due to the security features it offers.
Strongline Autoparts has successfully transitioned to using Autopart Online and is now looking at its next investments to continue growth as a business – David concluded: “The next module we will be looking at is barcode scanners, possibly starting with the goods-in module and expanding further as time goes on.”
MAM Software Director, Mick Forrest, said: “I have been happy to see Strongline Autoparts go from strength-to-strength in the automotive industry and the part that MAM Software’s applications have played in this. Utilising the right packages, it has excelled in the automotive aftermarket, and there are many more applications available which will help the business even further.”

Kalimex provides marketing that delivers ‘rapid ROI’
We’re pleased to bring a report from bestselling author, Dee Blick, retained marketer at Kalimex, the UK distributor of the JLM Lubricants product range, about how motor factors can utilise the power of marketing to their advantage:
The news today is far from upbeat, and the automotive aftermarket has not escaped the worst of the current troubles. We’ve emerged from the pandemic bruised but not battered, only to be hit with a war affecting the supply of parts, leaving thousands of stockists unable to fulfill trade orders. What's more, inflation has reached double figures, bumping up the cost of the weekly shop, and the subject of fuel prices commands more headlines than the recent drought.
In a recent survey, The Motor Ombudsman revealed that “56% of UK car owners who do not have a service plan in place are considering either missing it or delaying their vehicle’s annual service in 2022 to save money due to the sharp rise in the cost of living.”
To top this off: “68% of car owners are planning to reduce motoring-related expenditure in 2022.”
However, proof that every cloud does have a silver lining comes in the shape of research commissioned by Castrol and
published in June 2022: “Not only do customers trust workshops to use the best quality consumables (54%), but they are also open to paying more for better quality consumable items for their car, provided the benefits are explained to them first (51%).”
Kalimex sells the JLM Lubricants range of trade trusted additives to mechanics via the professional motor factor stockist, and at the heart of every JLM product is quality. JLM products are used regularly by motorists to keep their vehicles in good condition – who recommends these products? The professional motor mechanic.

Recently one factor stockist benefitted from a significant sales upswing from just two small campaigns. They sent out the Phone your Factor leaflets with trade orders and via the post. A staff member then phoned their VIP trade customers. These campaigns work well, delivering ROI for a small outlay. We will create these high impact leaflets at no charge for any JLM product factors would like to promote.
JLM Drive: this is the glossy magazine produced by JLM Lubricants every year for the professional trade. Many of our stockists have copies of JLM Drive on their trade counter, and some also include a copy with every VIP trade order. The new 2023 magazine will be available shortly and can be ordered directly from Kalimex – at no extra cost!
The top-six JLM products that professional mechanics use:
JLM DPF Cleaner
JLM DPF Refill Fluid (for onboard dosing systems)
JLM DPF Clean and Flush Fluids
DPF Refill Fluid as a relevant example. There are inferior products that can actually damage the DPF, so recommending a ‘cheap as chips’ fluid is to be avoided at all costs.
This is something that motoring journalist, Rob Marshall, has been particularly vocal about in the trade media, commenting: “Cutting corners with a substandard top-up fluid is virtually as bad as disabling the entire emissions-control system, which is illegal in some countries. The DPF management system will try to compensate with more frequent active regenerations, but this will harm, not just fuel economy, but also the DPF. The resultant increase in lubricant contamination could even cause permanent turbocharger and engine damage. With DPF refills, it’s either right or wrong, with no middle ground.”

Schaeffler showcases complete
Fia t 500 clutch coverage
The 500 has been a huge sales success for Fiat, so, potentially, is a regular visitor to the independent workshop; therefore, motor factors should be interested in this latest vehicle ‘in focus’ bulletin produced by Schaeffler.
Highlighting Schaeffler’s transmission system know-how, the OEM and technical partner to many of the world’s vehicle producers offers clutch replacement solutions for both the 872cc and 964cc two-cylinder engined versions of all 500 models (2010-onwards).
The demands for improved driving comfort, performance, fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions mean that the Fiat 500 is fitted with complex, lightweight and vibration absorbing drivetrain components, which, if damaged or worn, can have a knock-on effect on all associated parts.
However, Schaeffler says that with its genuine OE quality transmission components, drivetrain damage can be resolved quicky, efficiently and safely, by choosing from the comprehensive range of LuK complete repair solutions and single
components.
The complete solution comes in the form of the LuK RepSet DMF (part number ( needed to carry out a professional replacement, including the DMF; however, if a test and assessment of the DMF concludes that it is within wear tolerance
parameters, then it doesn’t need replacing. In this situation, a LuK RepSet can be fitted (620 300 00).
Schaeffler believes providing new service and repair opportunities for independent workshops is one of its specialisms, and its LuK GearBOX kit (462 0154 10) is a great example of this. Inhouse gearbox renovation not only adds another string to the workshop’s bow but can also make a significant contribution to its profits.
In common with its RepSets, LuK GearBOX repair kits have been specially developed to repair specific, high-wear applications and contain all the parts necessary to carry out a complete and professional gearbox overhaul.
Schaeffler says motor factor workshop customers can breathe easier, as they are fitting the same parts as delivered to vehicle manufacturers around the world for original fitment, which guarantees quality, durability and performance. They also benefit from the fact that LuK products are ‘all inclusive’ – with everything needed for a complete and professional replacement included in the box.

Brake fluid: testing, checking and everything in between!
When it comes to vehicle maintenance, monitoring the condition of brake fluid rarely makes most drivers’ to-do lists. This can lead to dangerous consequences for motorists and a missed service opportunity for the trade. Here, Scott Irwin MIMI, head of technical training at TMD Friction’s aftermarket brake brand, Mintex, discusses why both garages and motor factors need to educate their customers on this issue and the technicalities around each variation of brake fluid:
Motor factors and garages play an important part in keeping drivers safe on the road. Although most road users are au fait with the value of regular oil changes, the health of brake fluid is often ignored. This makes the role of garages, in particular, incredibly important in ensuring that a temperature test is conducted as part of a routine service.
The process of testing brake fluid is straightforward, and exact boiling points can be identified easily using a brake fluid tester.
Where possible, it is recommended to perform the test in the master cylinder reservoir of the car, by inserting the probe and ensuring its end sits just below the fluid level. Before performing the test, the equipment must be connected to the car battery, which is used to heat the brake fluid.
As with any equipment, it’s important to
find a device that is easy to use. Depending on the kit, instructions will often be shown on-screen, which takes the operator through each stage of the process.
The Mintex brake fluid tester MTL1000 is particularly user-friendly and features an LCD screen to aid usability. As the car battery heats the brake fluid, the probe will take the temperature, which typically takes around 30 seconds.
Once the test is complete, the operator is left with an accurate brake fluid temperature reading. If necessary, ‘before’ and ‘after’ readings can be shown to customers to demonstrate the difference in fluid levels and the importance of the test.
Although most vehicle technicians will be familiar with performing a brake fluid test, best practice around storing the product and the different variations available may be lesser known. As brake fluid is essentially the life blood of the braking system, it’s
26 I PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR OCTOBER 2022 BRAKES & CLUTCHES
crucial that garages are fully aware of how to use it, store it and mix it.
With regard to the different variations of brake fluids, the solution uses an American DOT system set out by the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Department of Transportation.
There are many different types: DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 4LV, DOT 5 and DOT 5.1, with the main difference between them being the temperature at which they boil. Technicians should always use the fluid type specified by the vehicle manufacturer to avoid mixing each variation. It is possible to mix some glycol-based fluids but never DOT 5, as this is silicone-based.
The difference between glycol-based and silicone-based fluids is an important distinction to make. Glycol-based fluids are hygroscopic, which means that they naturally absorb water from the environment at normal atmospheric pressure.
When brake fluid is in a vehicle, water will find its way through microscopic pores in brake hoses, seals and joints. Even when it’s on the shelf, unopened bottles can absorb moisture from the atmosphere and should not be kept on the shelf for long periods of time.
It is also essential that brake fluid is kept airtight, which is why standard bottles of brake fluid are 1.25l. This means that an entire bottle is used per one brake fluid fill, to ensure that nothing is left on the shelf and susceptible to moisture contamination.
How does this actually affect the brake fluid?
There are advantages and disadvantages: the upshot, water is heavier than brake fluid, so when it enters the product, one would expect it to pool and settle in low spots and boil very easily – this isn’t the case! Due to its hygroscopic nature, water is dispersed throughout the fluid, which helps to keep the boiling point of the brake fluid higher for longer.
It also prevents internal corrosion, which wouldn’t happen if the water was allowed to pool. The downside is that, ultimately, the presence of water within brake fluid will lower the boiling point over time. If the fluid temperature gets too low, it becomes extremely dangerous, and can lead to complete brake system failure.
There is one fluid that is set apart from the rest and that’s DOT 5. This product is silicone-based, meaning it is hydrophobic as opposed to hygroscopic and will not absorb water. As water isn’t absorbed by
this fluid, DOT 5 is considered to have a very long lifespan and is commonly used in vehicles that need to be stored for long periods of time but ready to go at the drop of a hat, such as military vans and classic cars.
Importantly, although silicone-based brake fluids do not absorb water, it can still enter the system and, therefore, lower the boiling point. Because water cannot be absorbed by hydrophobic solutions it will not disperse throughout the product. Instead, it will pool and settle in low spots and reduce the whole temperature of the braking system to 100°C, as well as potentially cause corrosion.
This, along with the fact that siliconebased fluids cannot be mixed, is invaluable knowledge. Although silicone-based fluids will generally last longer, they do need changing, and it’s important to refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations on how to test and change this type of fluid.
The importance of testing brake fluid can be seen as inconsequential, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! The dangers associated with driving a vehicle running on old brake fluid can be lifethreatening, and this needs to be taken seriously by both motor factors and garages. Regularly testing brake fluid not only maximises opportunities for upselling a routine service, but it could also potentially save a life, and this test needs to be seen as a standard check that is critical to the health of a vehicle.

Ring: Light the way this winter with quality lighting
New lighting technology brings new opportunities for both the garage and motorist, according to Ring Automotive, so it’s just as important that the latest developments are embraced by motor factors to keep vehicles safe and roadworthy.
Thoroughly checking all lights around a car is a swift and safety-critical exercise and should be applied to every vehicle going through the workshop for servicing, especially as faulty bulbs are one of the most common reasons for MOT failure.
Upgrade bulb ranges present opportunity for factors to upsell and deliver improved visibility for drivers. It’s important that factors opt for the latest and quality products, and Ring believes its awardwinning Xenon200 headlamp bulb, to keep vehicles roadworthy and drivers and passengers safe, is perfect for the job.

Ecobat identifies opportunities for both factors and workshop customers
There are many messages that factors might want to pass on to their workshop customers, but to initiate a battery testing regime, which is applied to every vehicle that enters their premises, is one of the simplest, but potentially most profitable, according to Ecobat Battery (Ecobat) Product and E-commerce Manager, Andy Waite:
The underlying facts, assembled from data collected by us are revealing: 27% of the vehicles that enter the independent workshop either need their batteries recharged or reconditioned, and a further 11% need a replacement, which means 40% of the vehicles technicians service daily has a battery issue!
However, despite these facts, workshops rarely test the battery, whether the vehicle is booked in for a MOT, annual service, or another repair. The knock-on effect is that 40% of roadside breakdowns
What do workshops need?
are due to battery failure and the beneficiaries of these failures are not independent workshops, or the factors that supply them, but breakdown services.
Now for the good news: workshops that address the issue and bring in a battery testing policy can potentially grow their annual revenue by £30,000, simply from replacement battery sales, which is naturally business that would come through the factor and could be multiplied by the number of workshop customers they supply!
Since the AGM battery was adopted as the OE fitment for micro-hybrid (start/stop enabled) applications, Ecobat has been at the forefront in expressing the need for independent workshops to be up to speed when it comes to both the batteries and the associated technology present in these vehicles. To support them, we introduced the ONE BOX, a solution that consolidated all the equipment needed to test and install start/stop batteries into a single package.
With the ONE BOX package and a little training to enable technicians get the best from the equipment, workshops find that fitting these batteries correctly is not a complicated process and allows them to provide a more professional service, which improves customer satisfaction and reduces the risk of future warranty claims due to incorrect installation or use of an inappropriate battery.
The components brought together in the ONE BOX bundle include an EBT780 battery analyser to accurately assess the condition of the existing battery, an EBC8UK battery charger and OBD lead to support the vehicle’s ECU/data storage during the replacement process, and an EBT420 battery validation tool (top-right) to ensure the new AGM/EFB battery is correctly assimilated into the vehicle’s battery management system. However, the package can also be supported with signage and point-of-sale material.
That said, if they don’t want to develop their offering to this extent but still want to enjoy those potential revenue gains, a quality battery tester with a printer, like the EBT780 mentioned and a consistent procedure to test the battery of every vehicle they work on, is all they need.
How can workshops demonstrate the need for battery replacement?
First, they need to carry out a battery test and print out the result, then, irrespective of the outcome, they can highlight that they have carried out a health check on the battery and share the result. This is a win-win; if the battery is good, it allows the workshop to provide some good news, but if it’s bad, it means they’ve helped the customer avoid a roadside breakdown and can justify the need for a replacement.
How can factors help?
Factors should be able to supply their workshop customers with a quality conductance battery tester, such as the EBT780, because, in addition to leadacid batteries, it can test AGM/EFB batteries for start/stop vehicles. It can also demonstrate the battery’s state of charge and state of health, as well as being able to print a test certificate, which can be used to advise the customer of the battery’s condition.

VARTA recommends like-for-like battery replacement
As the winter months draw and the cost-ofliving crisis continues due to soaring energy costs and rising inflation, VARTA is urging the industry to not fall into the trap of cutting corners when it comes to fitting or supplying replacement batteries.
VARTA Technical Trainer, Andy Cook, said: “There is a temptation for some motor factors to take the ‘easy route’ and push a cheaper, standard flooded battery, which would then be fitted to the end-user’s start/stop vehicle. It seems like an easier sell/message to deliver, but it’s absolutely not the right approach – it will end up costing them more in the long-run.”
Standard flooded or SLI batteries are traditional types made for and fitted to older vehicle types, ones with no start/stop system and with fewer electrical consumers. They are not suitable for modern vehicles with fuel-saving functions, like start/stop, according to VARTA.
vehicle has start/stop functionality, either an EFB or AGM is fitted; trying to get away
with a SLI will result in short battery lifespan and could even lead to features on the car not working properly.”
VARTA always recommends fitting likefor-like, or like-for-better, when it comes to technology.
Andy explained: “I understand that everyone is being cautious of spending at the moment, but I really do think it’s wise to invest in car maintenance, to fit the best available replacement parts – this helps avoid any potential breakdowns or lowering the re-sale value of a car.”
can also accurately test AGM and EFB batteries, according to VARTA. If it’s an older tester that doesn’t have the capabilities to test AGM or EFB batteries, then it’s worth them upgrading – motor factors should be able to take advantage of this and support their customers.
Andy highlighted: “It shouldn’t take long to complete a battery test – not much longer than five minutes – but by explaining the results to the customer, factors’ workshop customers are giving their customers peace of mind that the battery is operating properly or advising that it might be time for a replacement. By doing this, motorists will have a functioning battery and be ready for upcoming journeys.”
Batteries face greater demands than ever before, as they have to serve increasingly complex and power-hungry car electronics. Whereas digital dashboards, inbuilt screens and parking cameras used to be limited to high-end vehicles, they are now commonplace on most models, all placing additional strain on the battery.
Andy concluded: “Many drivers are also plugging in their mobile devices to charge them whilst on-the-move, again drawing power from the vehicle. This is why it’s paramount to ensure the battery is in a condition to support all the comfort and safety features – it’s the heart of the car.”
