Want to connect?
Social media is a funny thing, isn’t it? Perhaps that’s a simplistic way of putting it, but a platform that was built to connect us digitally has evolved into this monstrous, multi-billion pound phenomenon My first dabble into social media was on a platform called MySpace, which you may or may not remember? It was launched almost 20 years ago, which gives you an idea of how social media has evolved and grown in terms of impact, influence, popularity, authority and controversy
We use social media platforms, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, to share our content and reveal breaking news, ask thought-provoking questions, connect with readers and other industry professionals. It’s also proved helpful when organising ‘Factor Focus’ interviews, which have been well-received by the factors that have welcomed us in With my public relations hat on, it has been an important networking tool too
Scrolling through LinkedIn, in particular, it’s a place for professionals to update their industry profile if they’re moving jobs, retiring or marking a work anniversary It’s also a place of debate, which, given the amount of ‘hot topics’ in the industry at present, has meant the platform is one to keep an eye on if you’re interested in that kind of thing!
That said, with passions running potentially high and the potential for writing something that one might regret later – as well as damaging the reputation of the company they work for – a lot of businesses and organisations have implemented social media policies in an attempt to protect themselves
Why have I brought this up? Gary Lineker’s now infamous spat with the BBC, as well as Elon Musk’s apology to a worker after an exchange on Twitter, are just two recent examples of how social media has generated headlines and unwanted attention Granted, these are two highprofile examples, but just this week, I was scrolling through LinkedIn and thought: “I wouldn’t post that if I were you!”
We all need to be careful of how we utilise social media – and perhaps that’s why some people don’t use it at all! What do you think? As always, contact me at tom@pmfmag.co.uk.
Ironically, as you may have seen on our channels, we are heading to Automechanika Birmingham! We will be exhibiting between the 6th and 8th June at the NEC in Birmingham, and I hope to see many of you there.
As this is our preview issue, we have invited our fellow exhibitors to share what they’ll be getting up to at the show Furthermore, Messe Frankfurt Marketing Director, Alex Jones, made her case as to why you should make a date with Automechanika Birmingham 2023:
“The automotive industry is going through the biggest change in living memory; it’s tough out there for aftermarket businesses Disruption and changes are happening more frequently than ever, and it’s harder to make a profit and plan for the future than ever before; therefore, the thing I’m most excited about is seeing all the work the team have put in come to life
Professional Motor Factor: Certificate of Average Net Circulation for the 11 issues distributed between July 2021 and June 2022
Net total: 3,260

“The motor factor and retailer professionals can join the motorXfactor club, a brand new programme at the event offering distributors a number of VIP benefits ”

PCL continues to invest in the future of youth and industry
Pneumatics expert, PCL, has continued to recruit apprentices in Sheffield and the surrounding areas, offering opportunities that lead to long-term careers.
Each year, the company collaborates with local colleges and universities to provide young people with hands-on training and support to gain quality, long-term employment.
Since 2013, work placements and apprenticeships have been offered in assembly, machining, safety health environment and quality, IT, and sales and marketing at PCL HQ

Ho w can professional customer experience be improved?
TotalEnergies Business Development Manager, David Valentyne, identifies a “challenging issue” that is doing the rounds in the industry at the moment and clarifies how you will “undoubtedly” play a critical role in addressing:
That is, reconciling the continued push from governments, end consumers, investors and other stakeholders to become more environmentally-friendly – in line with the 2030 market changes now rapidly approaching – while also being conscious of the economic pressures facing both technicians and drivers today.
The latest RAC Report on Motoring offers some useful insights in that regard:
Rising oil prices in 2022 and cost of living increases, more generally, have seen the cost of fuel surge as the top concern for drivers People are holding on to their cars for longer than ever before, while many drivers, particularly younger ones, are putting off getting repairs done This heightens the need for regular and
effective servicing and maintenance to ensure vehicles are running safely and efficiently
The RAC report also shows that, in response to a huge rise in concern about costs and affordability, the environmental impact of motoring has slipped down the list of worries for drivers compared to last year.
But the issue remains
The ban on new petrol and diesel cars comes into effect in just a few years, while businesses across the board are seeking to operate more sustainably as part of the wider journey towards net-zero – driven by both regulatory requirements, as well as the imperative to retain relevance and market share

Taken together, keeping cars running efficiently and for longer, as well as reducing the carbon cost of scrappage, is key.
Lubricant selection is a critical aspect of this, and you can help technicians by encouraging them to engage proactively with their customers to improve understanding of what their vehicle requires and when. With climactic change continuing, we are much more likely to see temperature ‘extremes’ and, as you know, correct engine care is essential for ensuring safety, efficiency, reducing wear and tear, and minimising emissions.
No vehicle is the same, of course, and keeping a range of viscosity grades in stock, or having access to the right products through a just-in-time service, is crucial in ensuring technicians are prepared and to meet the needs of each individual vehicle and driver.
More commonly, technicians are often faced with complex designations when
working on vehicles, both in response to OEM requirements and evolving technologies and environmental regulations.
“Space at a premium”
And it’s not just about what gets put in the vehicle either: more product means higher potential waste volumes. All told, space on site is at a premium, both for storage and to ensure the working environment remains safe and accessible.
The full product lifecycle and value chain needs to be considered when seeking to embed long-term sustainability while improving near term business outcomes. Maximising storage capacity and minimising waste are vital for workshops, while effective recycling practices must be an essential component of any ongoing environmental commitment.
TotalEnergies’ response…
These are just some of the reasons for TotalEnergies developing Quartz Box, for

Changing market dynamics and consumer preferences trigger strategy change at Carwood
Changing market dynamics and consumer preferences
The aftermarket is in a period of unprecedented change: emerging vehicle technologies, ever stricter regulations and a proliferation of new vehicle models are transforming the industry – and quickly. At the same time, there has been an accelerated shift to more cost and ecoconscious solutions, bought on by a global pandemic, war and a cost-of-living and climate crisis. In isolation these are big changes. Together, they are massive. The aftermarket, Carwood included, needs to respond.
And we have! To ensure customers have access to the products and services they need to support both an increasingly diverse, complex and aging vehicle parc, and more discerning consumers, we have had to rethink our strategy. Whilst remanufacturing will remain our core business, we have also introduced a full range of solutions for fuel pumps, injectors and turbochargers from OE brands.
requirements to the owner of a highperformance car with a 3.5l twin-turbo V6 engine to that of a 13-year old vehicle, nearing the end of its lifetime. So, it’s important that you’re able to offer more than one kind of solution too. This is what drove our decision making.
For new vehicles, for example, we now offer a full range of new Bosch diesel and petrol fuel pumps and injectors and Garrett, BorgWarner and Mitsubishi turbochargers. With 100% coverage from start of vehicle production – often the only solution during warranty – you can access the parts sooner!
Within two or three years of vehicle launch, a remanufactured unit will likely be a more viable solution. Whether it’s an OE exchange, or one of our own OE-approved remanufactured units, by reusing the core, it is a much more cost and environmentallyfriendly option. Typically, Carwood units are at least 25% cheaper than new OE.
Carwood and remanufacturing go hand-in-hand. We have been returning used parts to VMs’ original specifications for over 50 years – long before it became the growth industry that it is today. Given the demand for increasingly affordable and sustainable parts, it will continue to do so; remanufacturing will always be the mainstay of Carwood’s business.
Over the past 12 months, however, we have taken on the distribution for a growing list of OE brands too: Bosch fuel systems, Garrett and Mitsubishi turbochargers, on top of our existing relationship with BorgWarner and Carbon Zapp diagnostic and test equipment – but why the shift in strategy?
With OE new and exchange units, OE spare parts for local repair, plus our own OE-approved reman range, you can offer your customers a choice of competitively priced solutions, without compromising on the quality of the product or the service either party offers – and it’s all available from one supplier.
Now more than ever, aftermarket companies need access to a broad range of high-tech parts, for an even broader range of vehicles, new and old. We also recognise that the owner of that vehicle may have different service and repair needs, based on their individual circumstances, and the type, age and value of the vehicle. Take the manager of a fleet of hybrid delivery vehicles, or a farmer midharvest, they’ll have very different
For a more economical repair for older diesel vehicles, where maintenance costs are often disproportionately high compared to their value, we also offer a range of Bosch OE spare parts for local repair. By only replacing components which are out of specification, this is often the most economical solution, but is subject to a lead-time.
Most recently we have been appointed as the distributor for Carbon Zapp. With a full portfolio of test and diagnostic equipment for all makes of petrol and diesel systems, workshops can quickly and accurately diagnose, test and repair current and future fuel systems, helping to save time and money, whilst still delivering a quality repair.

PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR MAY 2023 I 13
While trucks may not be our ‘bread and butter’, we believe this insight from Tevva CEO and Founder, Asher Bennett, will generate some ‘food for thought’:
Back in March, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change insisted that the world can still avoid the worst of climate collapse with genuine change, but that if we keep emitting at the current rate, the carbon budget for 1 5°C will be exhausted by 2030 That juxtaposition of hope and grim reality should be enough to focus everyone’s minds on the opportunities and threats that lie ahead
At Tevva we believe that further government action is required to ensure that the UK achieves its net zero goals in the best and fastest possible way for the good of the environment, economy and British people The recent Net Zero Review set out the “historic opportunity” offered by net zero in the UK, by creating a new era of change and opportunity. Yet the report also made clear that more should be done to “back business” and reap the economic benefits
Our expertise lies in EVs and specifically the electrification of trucks Despite accounting for just 2% of vehicles on our roads, heavy-duty trucks are responsible for over a quarter of road transport emissions. Road transport and HDVs are also one of the largest sources of air pollution, which causes 350,000 premature deaths per year in Europe
Clearly more must be done to accelerate the decarbonisation of CVs, and we’re asking the UK government to bring truck incentives in-line with those found in Europe Brexit put us in a position where, as a nation, we were free from EU state aid rules which limited the amount of support governments could give to certain industries Yet, the UK is lagging behind its European neighbours when it comes to incentives for electric truck adoption
As a VM, Tevva can offer its customers discounts at point of sale thanks to government incentives, with a maximum of £16,000 for small trucks and £25,000 for large ones Yet, if you compare this support to what’s on offer in other European countries, you’re left with a feeling that more could be done. In Germany, for example, the government provides 80% of the price differential between diesel and battery-electric trucks, in the Netherlands it’s 45% That’s potentially between £50£90,000 per truck more than what’s on offer in the UK
We appreciate the British government’s support, which enables us to make our 7 5t battery-electric truck even more appealing to fleets But for this country to meet its net zero goals, more action is needed to stimulate EV manufacturing, which is really
the only bright spot in an industry that has reached its lowest ebb for over 60 years
The electrification of trucks is inevitable, and the technology has developed to a point where an electric truck is a viable proposition for many operators There's a huge appetite among fleets for electric trucks, as the opportunity to reduce emissions makes good business sense Obviously there needs to be trust in the technology and clarity on total cost of ownership.
Te v v a i s w o r k i n g w i t h i t s c u s t o m e r s t o a d d r e s s b o t h o f t h e s e p o i n t s , a n d w e ’ r e c o n f i d e n t t h a t o u r e l e c t r i c t r u c k s w i l l s a v e t h e m m o n e y o v e r t h e l i f e t i m e o f t h e v e h i c l e a n d i m p r o v e t h e i r f l e e t a n d d r i v e r p e r f o r m a n c e
By developing a range of batteryelectric and hydrogen-electric medium to heavy-duty trucks that can improve air quality, vehicle safety, and lower total cost of ownership, Tevva is leading CV decarbonisation in the UK Yet the market isn’t ready to adopt on scale without further incentivisation, at least not with the required urgency

‘More UK government support needed to accelera te electric truck adoption’
Triumphant Kalimex stockists are the ‘jewel in our cro wn’
You could hear a pin drop when the names in the running for the top sales award were announced at JLM Lubricants’ annual distributor conference in December 2023. When Kalimex was announced as the winner, it was a magical moment, not least because it stretched its winning streak, but because it fought off competition from distributors of 46 countries. That triggered us to ask the question: “What makes Kalimex the top JLM distributor?”
Acompany can have the best products in the world, but if it is relying on its good name alone to drive sales, the business is forgetting that its stockists are busy and being approached by rival brands too, according to international bestselling business author and Kalimex marketer, Dee Blick (top-right), who offers insight into the company's success story:
From early doors’ trading, Kalimex has supported its stockist network This ranges from promoting products in trade magazines, like PMF and sister publication PMM, to sending product details direct to stockists Then follows the hard yards, namely belt-and-braces marketing support, helping those stockists to promote JLM products to their customers
Years ago, we ran Factor First campaigns where we supported customers with fax back forms – hands up who remembers the fax machine!? –competitions and trade campaigns, so they could promote our longstanding products,
like K-Seal and QuikSteel, to their customers – trade and motorist
Today we create similar campaigns for JLM Lubricants’ product range, using the power of email marketing, direct mail,
leaflets and point of sale promotion Every day we provide some form of marketing support to one of our stockists We’re an approachable team, ready to answer your questions and help you set up your next

marketing campaign If you ring during the week, you’re just as likely to get Mike Schlup, Kalimex MD, on the end of the phone as you are another member of our team We never lose sight of the importance of our stockists They are the jewel in our crown, key to our success.
Building relationships with topflight technicians
When the professional motor mechanic likes the products you sell so much that they reorder them regularly and rave about them on social media, you know you’re on to a good thing!
Undoubtedly, trade endorsements help our stockists to sell more But you must build trust with the trade, and this takes time So, we build awareness of JLM Lubricants’ products with technicians via trade magazines and trade only events
We also work closely with Darren Darling (top-left), founder of the independent DPF Doctor Network He’s a massive fan of JLM Lubricants’ products, so we try and ensure that when we’re exhibiting at a trade show
or event, Darren joins us You may have seen articles and columns featuring The DPF Doctor Network in magazines, including PMM I write these working very closely with Darren and his now global team of DPF Doctors When technicians in the top 5% category choose and use the products you’re promoting, it’s a sure sign they’re worth stocking!
But it’s up to the Kalimex team to ensure technicians are aware of JLM Lubricants’ products, and that they put them through their paces, so they can talk about them in a refreshingly unbiased way at events and on social media
Keeping up with trends in the market
Rising fuel prices and the escalating cost of living have seen real pressure on workshops to keep servicing and repair costs affordable Research by Castrol has indicated that motorists are willing to pay more for high quality additives and lubricants if their technician explains why they’ve used them and the benefits of using some products in between services
Added to this pot are the ongoing global trends of ‘repair don’t replace’ and ‘products over parts’ We ensure that we’re aware of emerging trends and insights and that our marketing messages right through the chain – stockists, technicians and motorists – are up-todate, relevant and appealing
We love JLM products – and use them too!
It helps if you believe in the products you’re selling – and that you also use them Colin Benzie, Kalimex’s resident petrolhead, uses several JLM products on an ongoing basis. Likewise, Mike, our MD, uses JLM products when he’s driving in the UK and on his many road trips overseas; in fact, the entire Kalimex team are JLM fans, which hopefully comes across when you talk to us!

Car Spares Factors launches refreshed brand
Car Spares Factors (CSF) has released details of its revitalised logo. This is part of the ongoing evolution of the company's brand, which was established in Highbury and previously went by the name of Alpha Automotive Spares.
CSF, a name you may recall from our interview with its co-owner Sanjiv Shah in November last year, has “grown and advanced over recent years”. The business felt it was time for an update: a more modern design, colour, strapline and font.
Whilst the brand looks a little different, what Sanjiv and his team do hasn’t changed. They’re still wholly focussed and committed to providing car parts, spares, tools, consumables and accessories their customers need and fast.
To back-up that point, we put a few questions to Sanjiv!
Why is this the right time for a brand refresh?
“CSF is in a phase of noticeable growth. The sixth branch was launched last September, which extends the geographical reach into Essex, as well as North London and Hertfordshire.
“New team members on-board, two directors at the helm with ambition not only for them but for the team as a whole. Investment in technology, regular and proactive marketing, slick processes, excellent warehousing and logistics, fast deliveries. The new brand represents a more modern look and feel to align with all of these things.”
A Q A Q
What does a brand refresh represent for CSF?
“Another chapter in the company’s impressive history (see timeline right). Investment in the business and the team.”
A Q A Q
What does CSF hope to gain?
“Customer loyalty; many customers have been working with CSF for decades. (We also hope for) new customers, expanded reach (Waltham Abbey) and a reputation for delivering parts, fast.”
New branch, new logo – anything else in the pipeline that you can tell us!?
“Watch this space!”

workshops significant profit margins’
p p p y p reap the rewards:
We’re always looking for ways to differentiate our business from the rest and searching for new products to recommend to our workshops, to help them provide the best all-round service to their customers
Similarly, your workshop customers are looking for ways to both improve the service that they give to their customers and increase their profit margin Adding Esprit Windscreen Repair is a simple way to do just that If you haven’t investigated windscreen repair before, you might be thinking: “I don’t know how it works, it’s too expensive, will it give a good result? Ultimately, what’s in it for my customers and how can they sell it on?”
Let’s have a look at how windscreen repair works, then we’ll consider which of the Esprit systems is right for different workshop types, and how can they upsell a repair to their customers as an add-on service
How does it work?
Simply, windscreen repair works by removing air and debris from the break,
filling it with resin, and curing it with an LED lamp:
Examine the break then drill out the crater
Place the bridge over the break, then the injector into that bridge
Inject the resin, and the plunger pushes it through the tiny cracks all around the break
The ‘pressure on, pressure off ’ cycle ensures that air is removed from the break and resin fills the damage
Once that is complete, remove the bridge, add a little pit fill resin to the screen and the damage is cured in 75 seconds with the LED lamp
Remove excess resin from the screen, give it a little polish and the customer is left with a screen that is independently performance tested to be as strong and clear as a new screen
Customer confidence
Throughout our 40-year history, Esprit has strongly believed in the power of
independent performance testing
Esprit passed the British Standard Institute test BS AU 251, which was aligned with the ECE R43 test for a new windscreen

Esprit Windscreen Repair Equipment sells four kits; of course, they all do the same excellent job, but there are some differences in price, based on the volume of repairs likely to be caried out

The Elite, now accredited for Quality and Approved Performance by the TÜV Rhineland testing house, is perfect for the regular repairer. It comes with the LED lamp, plus enough resin to carry out 40 repairs. Your customers can set their price point at the appropriate level for their own customers, but we recommend between £25 and £35
If they charge that amount, they will recoup the cost of the kit by the time they finish the resin provided, and after that, they just have to replace resin and other consumables This means each repair going forward is likely to cost around £1 50 – offering workshops a significant profit margin
We also sell the Compact, which also contains the LED lamp, but has enough resin for 20 repairs This kit is ideal for the occasional repairer, but still contains all the same Esprit products as the Elite Kit

Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket UK Managing Director, Mark Dolloway, evaluates the challenges the industry is facing, as it gradually phases out internal combustion engine-based vehicles with hybrid and all-electric alternatives. He also considers the question of whether the buying behaviour of UK consumers is supporting this transition?
ack in February, the European Parliament decided that from 2035 onwards only new passenger car vehicles that emit zero grams of CO2 emissions during operation are allowed to be sold in the EU The same applies in the UK – apart from the deadline being five years earlier This means even greater efforts will need to be made to achieve the stated targets in terms of EVs. The fundamentals will need to be put in place –and quickly – such as national public charging infrastructure and corresponding
“The car parc theory suggests that approximately 80% of cars in the UK will still feature ICE-based engines in 2030, meaning an all-electric market is still a long way off.”

In the UK, the car-buying landscape in 2023 is changing but slowly. According to a recent survey by YouGov – GB: What is the car-buying landscape likely to look like over the next year? – some interesting nuances were revealed when UK consumers were asked about the type of vehicle they are likely to consider next:
Although petrol engines still occupy the top spot amongst all categories of prospective car buyers, they are much more popular with British people looking to buy certified pre-owned cars (57%) and used cars (54%) than with those who intend to purchase new cars (48%)
More than a third of new car buyers are likely to opt for an electric (34%) or full hybrid (32%) model, but this number drops quite a bit when it comes to used car buyers (26%)
Full hybrid vehicles are the second most popular choice amongst UK consumers intending to purchase certified preowned cars (34%)
The survey shows that UK car buyers’ habits are indeed changing towards full hybrid and electric cars, but not necessarily at the pace many have predicted
The car parc theory suggests that approximately 80% of cars in the UK will still feature ICE-based engines in 2030, meaning an all-electric market is still a long way off
We can all agree that the world is moving in the direction of electric mobility, particularly in Europe where the market is more mature and ICE-based than other countries, such as China, which has had a different starting point in terms of the infrastructure in place to support EVs It’s very difficult to get electric charging points into the conservation areas of city centres, for example, or to row upon row of terraced houses, but this will come in time as
confidence increases and consumers decide that electric is the way forward for them If consumers remain ‘range anxious’ about running out of charge, they will simply stick with ICE-based hybrid cars
Importance of the aftermarket
The automotive aftermarket is a particularly important sector of the UK economy According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)’s SMMT Motor Industry Facts 2023, the sector contributes £12 4 billion per year to the UK economy, supports more than 330,000 jobs, and comprises of 55,000 businesses – 25,000-plus are MOT, service and repair sites.
So how will the sector be affected by the 2030 UK target and what challenges is it facing now and in the future?
According to the SMMT, the age of the vehicles on UK roads has increased The supply of new and leased vehicles has slowed down, which is positive for the UK aftermarket If people are holding onto their vehicles for longer, there is more likely to be a need for repair solutions, which is part of the Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket offer
In the future, we expect fleets to become more important, and not just commercial type fleets, as the purchase of an EV by an individual requires a high initial investment – how will individuals fund an electric car purchase in the future? The cheapest all-electric car in the UK is currently just under £30,000, which is quite
expensive, so most consumers wouldn’t look to buy outright but will look for a private lease solution The lease market will then become more attractive to the private buyer Paying a fixed monthly payment, say, over three years, makes it more affordable for the individual
Evolution not revolution
There will also be a significant change in electric-powered transmissions, of which Schaeffler is a key supplier This will start to influence the new car market quickly because of the 2035 EU targets In the aftermarket there will, of course, be a shift towards the repair of these transmissions, which Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket is preparing for under its REPXPERT brand Working closely with technicians to ensure they’re ready for the change as the technology evolves, and as the transition to electric technology feeds into the used car market
Although at the moment many buyers are unsure as to if – and when – they buy an electric car what the likely maintenance and servicing costs will be, Schaeffler is helping to ensure that when the uncertainty dissolves the aftermarket can support
Overall, we see the effect on the aftermarket for the powertrain switch being minimal by 2030, at least in Europe It will be an evolution rather than a revolution.

TALK OF THETRADE
PMM readers had their chance to share some views on the incessant speculation about changes to the current MOT – here are a few snippets:
“Classic cars don't need an MOT anymore. But I work with a few reputable classic car dealers, and they still bring them in here for the annual test to provide assurance that the cars are roadworthy if anything ever happened ”
MOT public consultation, an aftermarket first, classic car
“I think the government, probably, will have to listen to the outcome of the MOT consultation, because most organisations are objecting to the changes, including most MOT stations I mean, it'll be far too dangerous for cars to be on the road unchecked for a period of two years ”
“It would be very dangerous to change the MOT frequency because customers only know when there's something wrong with their car when it’s too late It's not fit for purpose for the road when they bring it in for a test. Some customers don't even know how to change tyres – that’s what we’re dealing with here.”
At a recent press event at Matt Cleevely’s EV garage in Cheltenham, journalists gathered to learn all about how workshop owners and technicians are now able to offer their customers a simple test that generates an insight into the condition of their EV battery

Looking at the receive information via the headlamp swivel module position sensors feedback from the SMC module on the LIN the swivel motor, headlamp module switches off the xenon lamp completely. This done to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. In this particular motor failure though the result was similar: Switching off the headlamp completely. Smart beginnings the root cause of the fault. The headlamp control unit was clearly the smart choice as find that it pays imesaving o decide upon he best area in which to cause of the fault.” Ben Johnson, diagnostics expert CPDZONE required only few screws and the lower panel removing under the steering wheel. What was aiming for was to take reading functional description didn’t include what precisely the LIN voltage should be. hecking the left output from the isplayed voltage of 10.89 V with battery support temporarily removed during testing as was little awkward to leave in place with voltage not static but there shouldn’t be such large difference between sides. With was almost the same value as at the headlamp. seemed pretty obvious to me that there the left headlamp module SMC or the line itself had chafed and shorted to power nd checking for continuity to 12 V. this was confirmed, further evaluation on the wire would be carried out using voltage The customer, on budget, decided that he would simply only like new wire

BIRMINGHAM 2023 PREVIEW
AUTOMECHANIKA
Esprit
(Hall 20 Stand D71)
Interested in recommending an add-on service to your workshops? Windscreen repair is an excellent way for garages to provide an extra service to their customers, according to Esprit, but maybe they haven’t used it before
Esprit Managing Director, Victoria Evans, said: “You can read websites, articles and adverts, but nothing beats coming along and speaking to us in person! We’ll have kits for you to look at, and our experienced staff to discuss your requirements and which kit might be best for your garage customers.
“We can also discuss your training requirements, our recent TÜV certification and what it means for your customers, and answer all your questions on windscreen repair and how it might help your business If you mention this editorial, you can even claim a free Esprit branded mug! We hope to see you there and chat to you about your requirements soon.”
The Verification of Lubricant Specifications
HELLA (Hall 19 Stand Q90)
As one of the event’s Platinum partners, HELLA will be exhibiting a broad range of its workshop equipment, as well as its OE replacement parts portfolio, that includes a wide range of vehicle electrics and electronics.
As each new vehicle becomes increasingly ‘connected’ and technology dependent, HELLA believes the independent sector is faced with a stark choice: invest in the equipment necessary to gain access to these vehicles and partner with a supplier that can provide the OE quality replacement parts needed to reliably repair them, or be left behind and not only lose ground, but potentially lose everything!
Through its Hella Gutmann brand, HELLA will be demonstrating that it has the answer to this most pressing challenge by showing its workshop solutions for both vehicle diagnostics and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
Delphi Technologies (Hall 19 Stand R64)
(Hall
19 Stand S60)
Independent membership body, VLS, will mark a significant milestone at Automechanika Birmingham 2023, as it celebrates 10 years of upholding standards in the lubricants industry by providing a credible means to verify lubricant specifications impartially
Back in 2013, VLS was formed amid concerns that some lubricant products were being sold with claims that did not seem believable Closer inspection found that sub-standard formulations were occasionally passed off as the latest specifications or even failed to perform effectively The vast majority of lubricants sold in the UK market at the time were fully compliant; however, out of this concern, reputable lubricant blenders and manufacturers came together to launch VLS
Since then, VLS has investigated 86 different lubricant complaints from cold weather properties to compliance with industry standards and market regulations. The work is ongoing, with eight cases currently under review. Find out more about the work of VLS and how you can raise a case or become a member by visiting the stand
New-to-range Delphi parts, including a Tesla suspension arm, a raft of first-to-market brake components, and new bi-metallic, high-carbon alloy brake discs are to be set out for all to see, alongside a complete programme of workshop support in the form of Masters of Motion and Delphi Academy.
The brand’s Alpine sponsorship is also set to be celebrated at Automechanika Birmingham: visitors to the Delphi stand will be invited to compete for the best lap time on an Alpine F1 simulator and reaction time on a Batak machine, with daily prizes for the top performers
Furthermore, Delphi’s technical services manager, Luke Garratt, will be presenting ‘Hydrogen Internal Combustion – Is this the future?’ as a keynote speaker on the second day (Wednesday)

AUTOMECHANIKA BIRMINGHAM 2023 PREVIEW
OSRAM and Ring (Hall 19 Stand M111)
Renowned lighting specialists, OSRAM and Ring, will be sharing a stand that will include an extensive display of their products, including a focus on the OE lighting solutions OSRAM provides, as well as Ring’s aftermarket battery care, workshop tools, and inspection lamps.
Product highlights will include the award-winning OSRAM NIGHT BREAKER 200, OSRAM’s Professional Series of working lights and Ring’s coloured inspection lamps, cordless tyre inflator, pro jump starter and RWL400, RWL600 and RWL1000 worklamps
The stand will host interactive features and experts from both Ring and OSRAM will be on hand throughout the show to discuss products, offer advice and expertise and perform product demonstrations if needed There will also be the chance for visitors to win prizes on the stand
MAM Software (Hall 19 Stand J100)
Throughout the event, MAM Software will champion its core business belief that “digitisation, sustainability and profitability go hand-in-hand” The team will be available to showcase Autopart, as well as brand new products, including ePOD and EasyAP
ePOD is the latest mobile application focussing on proof of delivery software, created with digitisation in mind ePOD streamlines the delivery process, removing paperwork and laborious tasks whilst reducing manual errors
EasyAP can overhaul the supplier invoice process, taking the process completely digital, automating previously timeconsuming tasks, whilst moving businesses into a more sustainable future
Attendees will also get the chance to see live demonstrations of Autowork Online, the intuitive and featurerich cloud-based garage management software.
Ecobat Battery (Hall 20 Stand G90)
As Europe’s largest battery distributor equipped with a team of knowledgeable power storage experts, Ecobat Battery is ideally positioned to help independents from both the wholesale and installation side of the industry to understand the issues they face and the opportunities that are available for all matters concerning the supply, fitment and recycling of batteries, as well as the ongoing development of battery technology
Demonstrating the spectrum of solutions the company has to offer, Ecobat Battery’s stand will be divided into five defined areas: automotive, leisure, mobility/motorcycle, chargers/invertors, with a fifth being dedicated to sister company Ecobat Solutions, which, reflecting the industry’s focus on EV technology, offers a fully integrated EV battery logistics, re-engineering and recycling service to manufacturers
“Automechanika Birmingham is the biggest aftermarket event on the UK calendar, so we are treating it accordingly,” explained Ecobat Battery Commercial Director, Paul Payne “This is why we are showcasing example products from 19 of the leading brands that we actively supply to our customers throughout the country ”
Dayco (Hall 19 Stand P102)
The company that pioneered the belt in oil (BIO) innovation on behalf of the likes of Ford and VW will be highlighting the opportunity regular BIO replacement for these engines provides the aftermarket
Dayco National Sales Manager, Steve Carolan, said: “Although the BIO innovation is a fantastic solution, which helps these small and efficient engines to deliver incredible levels of power, alongside exceptionally low emissions and excellent fuel economy, they do need to be replaced more frequently, so it’s important for workshops to follow the VMs’ scheduled replacement intervals ”
Thermal management is another aftermarket ‘hot topic’, as, according to Dayco, maintaining the correct temperature in the various parts of the engine is imperative for sustaining its peak performance and maximum efficiency. Often, that’s only possible with the use of electric pumps that can be activated on demand.

Pichler Tools praised for boosting workshop efficiency
Are your customers enjoying reduced booking times, thanks to Pichler Tools? One independent workshop has lauded the company responsible for designing and developing solutions for problem jobs after cutting the time to complete a job by 74%!
The owner of a Worcester-based independent garage left high-praise for Pichler Tools after its new hydraulic wheel bearing removal kit reduced the time spent replacing a seized wheel bearing on a Land Rover Discovery 5
With a book time of just over one-and-aquarter hours, Dan Baines, owner of Midland Land Rover Engineers, put his recently acquired tools to work on the front wheel bearing of a Discovery 5 and completed a professional repair within 20 minutes
Thanks to its innovative design, according to Pichler Tools, the wheel
bearing kit allows technicians to work directly on the vehicle with minimal strip down needed for access
Dan said: “This is a great bit of kit that actually does what it says on the tin with ease There are a lot of ball joints on the Discovery 5, but this kit made the process so much faster because I could do the job on the car without complete disassembly ”
Pichler’s hydraulic wheel bearing removal kits have been developed for generation 1, 2 and 3 type wheel bearings. Kits can be tailored to the work requirements of the garage to boost efficiency
The cylinder can be used with a manual hydraulic foot or pneumatic pump
Dan also added a Pichler Tools 4 5t ball joint splitter to his kit, allowing him to quickly and easily pressout tapered ball joints without any damage to the rubber boot or thread.
What’s in the box?
Pichler Tools’ kit comprises a 22t hydraulic cylinder, which can also be used for the removal of seized drive shafts, bushes and ball joints – all while still on the vehicle
He added: “This is the ultimate kit for the job It gets the work done so much faster, and I can still charge book time, so it’s a profitable investment It’s hassle free too; if I’d have done that wheel bearing in a press, chances are the aluminium knuckle would have snapped and I’d be liable for the extra cost ”
