On the right track?

There were calls for the government to extend the MOT public consultation period – and the Department for Transport (Df T) has abided Initially, the timeframe was six weeks, which the Independent Garage Association argued was “not long enough” given that there are 69 questions to respond to It has now been extended to the 22nd March

The IGA launched a petition to prevent the possible switch to 4-1-1, which, at the time of writing, has more than 7,500 signatures – are you one of them? What do you think? I’d love to hear from you and gain your views on this ongoing subject

I visited Castleford College at the end of February with the Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association, where I spent a day with apprentices. They were engrossed in masterclasses presented by technical trainers working for OEMs, and they listened intently to inspirational talks given by professionals that have climbed the career ladder

I was lucky enough to be on the periphery of a discussion between one of the female speakers and female apprentices Unfortunately, she had seen a lot of negative headlines, reading phrases like ‘skills shortage’ and ‘skills crisis’, but I believe the reassurance she received renewed her confidence and, hopefully, will put a spring in her step as she continues her studies

There will be a story to come from the event, so I don’t want to spoil it completely; however, from the many press releases I receive from industry organisations, manufacturers and suppliers, I believe there is a genuine appetite to train, develop and upskill

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF), for example, launched a new training academy last year It claimed a key focus of the academy would be engaging with schools, colleges and universities, by working with School of Thought. The IAAF reported it had forged partnerships with Heart of Worcestershire College, West Notts College, and East Coast College, as it looks to provide education settings with a “deeper look into the workings of the trade”

I am aware that other companies are working tremendously hard in this area, and, as a publication, we will continue to promote and support these kind of initiatives

like we have done for Lucas Oil in this issue (pg 18)

Have you heard of the Lucas Oil Academy (LOA)? Its sales and operations director, Dan Morgan, explained: “The LOA is an initiative that introduces young technicians to additive technologies and explains how they work The LOA does this in association with the technical colleges that run the development programmes for the apprentices from garages throughout different regions ”

Professional Motor Factor: Certificate of Average Net Circulation for the 11 issues distributed between July 2021 and June 2022

Net total: 3,260 United Kingdom: 3,260

One of the technicians, Nathan Owen, pointed out the value the project has for both factors and workshops: “It helps us to get more information about additives into the garages The young mechanics develop an appreciation that the additive approach can increase overall garage efficiency. This also helps us to drive business towards the motor factors. More importantly, it will continue to drive business towards the motor factors well into the future, as the young mechanics’ careers progress ”

The article also touches on the continuing challenges that E10 presents It’s one of many insightful articles this month, which, of course, I hope you enjoy

That’s it for this month! As always, if you’d like to feature in our ‘factor focus’ series, like Jivaji Auto Factors (pg 10) and YMF Car Parts (pg 14) have, please get in touch Until next time, have a great March! Tom

Workshops being increasingly restricted access to data and RMI, UK AFCAR claims

UK AFCAR is gathering “mounting evidence” that independent workshops are facing increasingly restricted access to data and repair and maintenance information

The coalition of trade associations, such as Garage Equipment Association, Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF), National Tyre Distributors Association and the UK Lubricants Association, recently invited independent workshops to register any restrictions they face on gaining access to this data, or other restrictions in their ability to complete a vehicle repair

The findings, described as “ongoing”, show independent operators reporting some issues across a number of vehicle makes and models, including Mazda, Hyundai, BMW, Audi, Range Rover, Porsche, Citroën, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Peugeot and Vauxhall

One garage responded: “[We had problems with the] Mercedes A Class radar, [as there were] no fault codes but distance warning and emergency braking [were] not working [It was] diagnosed as [the] radar control unit [We were] unable to replace [the part], as [it] requires Mercedes OEM and C5 SCN login ”

Another garage could not access a Hyundai vehicle’s online service record, meaning they could not record servicing or repair work, while another had difficulty in finding any information to update a Citroën vehicle’s digital service records, with the problem remaining unresolved. The same problem was reported for a Mazda CX 5.

More specifically, one technician came across a stumbling block when replacing a DPF additive tank to a Peugeot Partner, as they were unable to program the part to the vehicle and had to take it to the dealers for secure configuration

UK AFCAR fights to ensure the rights of the independent aftermarket that are enshrined in MV-BER and vehicle type approval legislation, both of which are upheld in the post-Brexit era

MOT public consultation extended

The government has confirmed that the consultation period related to potential changes to the MOT system will close on the 22nd March 2023 – an extension to the initial six-week window.

The Department for Transport (DfT) had been under pressure to stretch the consultation period The Independent Garage Association (IGA) had launched a petition to help prevent the possibility of a 4-1-1 MOT.

IGA Chief Executive, Stuart James, said: “After seeing the incredible support for our campaign, and meeting with the DfT and DVSA in conjunction with the S cottish Motor Trade Association, I am delighted that our collective concerns have been listened to

“ The initial six-week consultation period was far too short to thoroughly consider the impact that the many complex topics covered within could have on road safety Allowing a further four weeks to the consultation period will enable stakeholders time to appropriately consider and respond to

the extensive detail contained within the consultation documents

“While this is good news, we will not relax our efforts to ensure that public are protected from the proposed move to a 4-11 MOT frequency, and we will continue to

work with the DfT throughout the consultation period and beyond

“I encourage ever yone to respond to the MOT consultation with their views and sign the automotive trade bodies’ petition to stop the 4-1-1 MOT”

Motor factor turned retailer confident success of in-house stock control software packa ge will maintain momentum

Once parked up in a nearby car park across the road, I trotted over to Jivaji Auto Factors. It’s an accessory shop that’s sandwiched between other independents; in fact, scanning the street in both directions, the vast majority of the businesses appeared to be independent and not part of a large corporate chain Walking into the store, there were transparent screens erected on all sides, from top to bottom, with a small window to a counter where a gentleman offered a warm welcome As he scurried off to fetch Haki Kapasi, one of the directors of Jivaji, I scanned through the windows to see the obvious brands and types of products that a retailer would have on sale – typical

Jivaji Auto Factors began life in 1973, so with this being its 50th year in business, there was no better time to pay the team a visit. Editor Tom Henman was invited personally by one of the directors, Haki Kapasi, and was delighted to be thrusted a previous edition of Professional Motor Factor almost as soon as he entered the building!

service items and other commodities that a motorist would want for their vehicle – but there was a brand dotted around the store that was alien to me – Autotech – so I banked it for a question later on

Haki jumped into my life with a beaming smile and escorted me through the store for the first time, where I discovered a few component parts, but, again, it was mostly retail items I walked up a steep staircase –avoiding the computer equipment that was clearly on its way out! – I was shown into an office where two gentlemen stood and introduced themselves: Habil Kapasi, Haki’s brother and fellow director, and Andy Jones, who is responsible for marketing and data They are the three senior figures of a business that comprises of eight staff Fuelled with tea and posh biscuits – I felt honoured! – we got going and, naturally, the first question was about the

background of Jivaji Auto Factors

Take it away, Habil: “Simply, we are a small family business that supplies both retail and wholesale auto parts After leaving Uganda in 1972, my parents began to run the shop here on Lozells Road in 1973.

“My father then developed a stock control software package in the 1980s. He pursued this after our shop was burnt down during the Handsworth riots in 1985 What started as a personal interest, a passionate hobby, he soon began selling the software because his customers liked and wanted it

“The store began trading again in 1990, but by the turn of the millennium, we started to veer away from retail and focus on wholesale That being said, today, we’ve a balance of two strong arms to the business with retail and wholesale We also have our own brand Autotech.”

Introducing Motor Factor Solutions 2

That answered one of my questions but triggered several others – firstly, about the stock control software Motor Factor Solutions 2 – or MFS – is a desktop application designed to meet the specific needs of motor factors and retailers It provides a “robust yet easy-to-use” package to manage sales, purchases, stock levels, accounts and reporting

Customers that continue to use the software are rewarded with discounts – a loyalty scheme if you will – whereby, the more the platform is used, the less likely they’ll require support.

So, how many motor factors have dedicated themselves to MFS?

Habil responded: “A friend of Jivaji heard about my father’s idea and saw the value in it, and that’s how it snowballed It’s ended up in a few places around the UK –I’d say around 20 so far, and we’re confident that others will follow suit

“That’s because we’ve redeveloped the software with the intention of upgrading it, bringing it up to specification that will meet today’s motor factor and retail challenges We’ve enhanced my father’s old clients’ software, while we’ve picked up new customers too ”

Each time I brought up MFS, Haki or Habil referred me back to Andy – it was clearly his baby now! I quizzed him about how the customer is charged – was it a one-off cost or a rolling subscription, for example?

Andy replied: “There's a one off cost, but we try to keep everything low If a factor just wanted the software but didn't want a data transfer, it's £50 to set MFS up remotely

“To move a factor’s data from its existing system to our system, we charge £500 There's another option where I go along, set up the system and network, move all its data across, give the guys a couple of days of training That costs £1,290 – that's just the set-up fees

“Then there's a monthly fee, which starts at £100 for retailers and £150 for warehouses But we don't tie anyone down to a contract; we ask our customers to judge us after three months People would likely run it for three months anyway, but nobody has said after that period: “No, I don't want it anymore” ”

Intriguing business model

I was impressed by what I’d heard; the factoring side of the business had almost entirely disappeared, apart from a few nearby garages that have enjoyed

PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR MARCH 2023 I 11 PEOPLE & INDUSTRY FACTOR FOCUS

availability and a strong relationship over a considerable period of time

I’d obviously walked through the shop, where there’s approximately 10,000 part numbers on the shelves, while, in the warehouse, there’s 2,000

I felt this was the perfect opportunity to probe more about Autotech It’s a range that varies from power steering fluid to screen wash and engine oil to brake pads

Haki revealed that the sources of the Autotech range vary in terms of location, but, quality wise, the verdict has been unanimous:

“The brake pads are microscopically tested and the garages we know tested

them – and now they would ask for it by name Likewise, there is an article that shows the pads being reviewed by a VM and the feedback was superb ”

Habil admitted that Jiavji prices these products “at the bottom” but was “lucky” to find a brake supplier where qualities were “unquestionable ”

Andy added that Jiavji had to be clever with the Autotech branding; it’s a white label product so it was a blank canvas in terms of how the packaging would look on the shelf and how Jivaji wanted it to stand out

Andy is convinced that objective has been achieved

50-year anniversary

This year marks Jivaji’s 50th anniversary and represents a “really good opportunity” to “reconnect with customers and remind people we’re here” Despite a loyal customer base, a profitable business and impressive in-house data software solution, there are always hurdles to overcome One of the challenges is to bridge the gap between itself and the younger generation – people that are likely searching for brake pads or service packs on their phones

Haki explained: “That’s the sad story of the High Street, isn’t it? It’s a consequence of searching and seeing the large wholesalers at the top of the page It’s hard to compete with that, but we’re not admitting defeat, we’re working harder and with this being our 50th anniversary, there’s added motivation to make a big push ”

Habil added: “That being said, we receive more phone calls on a Saturday afternoon, whether it be phone calls or walk-ins, than we do during the rest of the week because the ‘big boys’ are closed.”

Final word

Jivaji Auto Factors is located in a diverse part of Birmingham, where communities and cultures are tight There are many different nationalities Jivaji itself has two staff from Bulgaria, both of whom work in the nearby warehouse, one from Poland and one that is a British Pakistani

A former member of staff, Frank, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, was fluent in five languages! He was an invaluable asset and is sorely missed by staff and customers

I offered Habil and Haki the opportunity to conclude the interview with anything extra they’d like to add – Habil stepped up: “Fifty years of experience is not a gimmick or empty words, there is genuine experience here When we design software, it’s parts people that are designing it for parts people When we created Autotech, it was parts people designing it for retailers It comes from pure experience; there’s no handbook or manual ”

It was a joy to spend time with Haki, Habil and Andy, as well as meet Daniel and Luqman in the shop that, begrudgingly, agreed to a photo! I wish Jivaji Auto Factors the best for the future.

Historical YMF Car Parts planning for the future

Let’s pick up where we left off in the February edition! At the end of the first part of Tom Henman’s interview with YMF Car Parts directors, James Fletcher, Matthew Pope and Tom O’Brien, James was explaining what the multi-branch organisation based in Yorkshire looks for in new recruits and what the onboarding process looks like.

We also took a trip down memory lane to when the factor’s journey began in a renovated butcher’s shop in Layerthorpe, York, in 1969 Pushing through the decades, we discussed expansion, the impact of COVID-19 and the current economic situation, serving the public and, of course, the ‘YMF way’ of doing things

It was time to move on, though, starting with part availability, which has been an industry-recognised issue over the last couple of years

As I mentioned in the previous instalment, YMF Commercial and Joint Managing Director, Lee Jones, couldn’t attend the interview in-person but was kind enough to send several statements to help contribute

On the very subject of part availability, Lee said: “Stock availability has definitely been problematic, but we are lucky to be part of the IFA (IMTFA).

“IFA membership gives us access to some of the biggest and the best parts suppliers in the UK and across the world With their help, we have managed to keep stock availability very high with only a handful of part numbers that have been unavailable to us

“That being said, keeping availability at acceptable levels has been very difficult and time consuming We are hopeful that this improves throughout 2023 ”

Tom, who read the statement on Lee’s behalf, echoed those sentiments and acknowledged he’d also spent hours on availability – becoming part of his daily routine, in fact, which had never been the case previously.

The issue actually forced YMF to adapt its own systems “to make it easier” for its customers when trying to discover stock levels There has been discussion about adapting modules on data software programs to simplify the process further, but, as of yet, nothing has materialised

Best quality at competitive prices

With part availability sometimes a challenge, it was sometimes tricky for YMF to offer both variants of product – OE and aftermarket specifications – but with availability, hopefully, returning to healthy levels, I wanted to ask where YMF stood on quality versus price

Once more, I was referred to a preprepared statement from Lee: “Product quality is very important to us, and we

always strive to offer the highest quality products at the most competitive prices

“We generally have two options available to our customers for the majority of product groups: premium – which will be our main supply brand and will be a premium quality product at a competitive price with a large range available, great technical back-up, great warranty support etc – or aftermarket, which will be our secondary supply brand and will generally be a shorter range available at a lower price point

“The aftermarket product will always comply with MVBER (block exemption) regulations but is, generally, used as a ‘budget friendly’ option where customers are looking for a cheaper repair ”

Lee is convinced that the strain of the cost of living crisis will likely see the aftermarket ranges “become more popular in 2023”

Links with garages

“I reckon there are 20 garages within a fiveminute drive from here – it’s a good spot this!” said Matthew The York branch is just on the outskirts of the hustling city centre

Obviously, these workshops are competing against one-another and, one

14 I PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR MARCH 2023
PEOPLE & INDUSTRY FACTOR FOCUS

would imagine, it’s easy to try undercut a rival with a quote using a budget alternative The directors wouldn’t be drawn on whether they’d experienced that, but what James did say is that price wasn’t the overriding issue for many workshops:

“The majority of the time, when a garage rings up and orders, they want the bits now! That’s what they care about Service has become the biggest priority Perhaps when a garage has more time, price may enter the conversation, but, right now, they want the parts as quickly as possible so they can service or repair the vehicle and move onto the next job ”

“I love this industry!”

Matthew has been with YMF for 32 years, starting life in the business as a teenager and taking on any task asked of him James mentioned it in the previous article, whereby if YMF employees put in the hard graft, have the right mentality and desire to progress, they’ll be offered opportunities – that’s what’s happened to Matthew and is enjoying life as a company director. The same goes for Tom and Lee, both of whom worked their way up from the bottom to the top

YMF works closely with local colleges to hold training and recruitment events, where it hopes to discover the next motor vehicle superstars What’s more, YMF also hopes to inspire current automotive professionals through the college pathway but through relationships with suppliers too

The influx of EVs is unavoidable, with more and more trickling through workshop doors, and the aftermarket needs to be

prepared for that, according to Lee: “Electrification is coming to the aftermarket whether we like it or not, and we need to embrace the changes that this will bring to our industry

“With the UK set to end the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, it is only a matter of time before EVs make up the majority of the UK car parc Our industry should be preparing for this as we speak, so that we are ready to take on the servicing and repair work for these vehicles

“Online training is getting more and more popular and is probably the best place to start

“YMF has teamed up with Delphi Technologies and has launched an elearning platform, which includes EV/hybrid training modules amongst many other subjects ”

What are you most proud of ?

I wanted to sign-off the interview by asking each of the gentlemen sat in the room what their proudest YMF achievement was All three were unanimous: “Becoming a company director!”

That said, I particularly liked how James expanded on his answer He explained how the directors are able to get on with their day-to-day roles, without conflicting with other directors, but also unite as a unit and ensure YMF is on the right slope:

“The dynamic works well; we’ve got a tremendous structure in-place: Lee supports suppliers, Matthew is customerdriven, Tom manages our systems and I concentrate on staff

“ We ' r e p u t t i n g t h i n g s i n p l a c e n o w, l i k e t i g h t e n i n g u p a r e a s a n d a d d i n g m o r e s t r u c t u r e , t o m a k e i t a n e a s i e r b u t m o r e s u c c e s s f u l b u s i n e s s I ’ m v e r y p r o u d t o b e h e r e a n d o f t h e w a y t h e b u s i n e s s i s h e a d i n g E v e r y o n e i s c o n t r i b u t i n g t o Y M F, a n d I ’ m c o n f i d e n t i t w i l l o n l y g e t b e t t e r ! ”

New developments in Autoca t can ‘drama tically decrease mis-sold parts and reduce lost sales’

Selling the wrong car

MAM Software claimed its electronic parts catalogue, Autocat, enables users to quickly find all components for any vehicle It has recently been further developed to address the problems suppliers face when ensuring the correct parts are matched to a vehicle

As an automatically updated, webdriven catalogue, Autocat gathers component data from multiple suppliers, giving you instant access to the most up-todate component specifications The data is maintained through an automatic verification and standardisation process, facilitating easy product comparison Webbased data retrieval also means you don’t have to rely on CD-based updates to access the latest product information

MAM reported that the catalogue is simple to use, with intuitive selection and

drill-down menus on a single screen You can search for the components you need by product type, supplier or part number

Autocat improvement

The latest Autocat development includes an enhancement to the information returned regarding part specifications; for example, brake discs include vital product information, such as disc diameter in millimetres When millimetres can be the difference between the perfect part, or not fitting at all, having access to this information can vastly improve supplier confidence when selling parts Autocat sections that are included in this latest update are brake discs, oils and cabin filters, with many more due to be rolled out Autocat displays this data within the main parts table, but also has on-screen

Additionally, not selling a part for fear it’s not an exact match can also cost a business money in lost sales. Some suppliers may send multiple part options to ensure a fit and spend time creating numerous returns – so how can this be avoided?

prompts to let the user know that there is more information to be examined This latest information is also constantly being updated, keeping you up-to-date with the latest supplier advice

MAM Software Sales Manager –Automotive, Ben Nicholls, advised: “This is a great development to an already excellent software It will allow businesses to sell with confidence, minimising the worry of mis-selling parts, increase their profits by reducing lost sales and reduce returns. I’m excited to see further enhancements to our long standing Autocat solutions and the benefits they can bring to our customers ”

Lucas Oil Academy

‘driving business to wards motor factors’

“The Lucas Oil Academy (LOA) is an initiative that introduces young technicians to additive technologies and explains how they work. The LOA does this in association with the technical colleges that run the development programmes for the apprentices from garages throughout different regions,” explained Sales and Operations Director, Dan Morgan, but how does this impact you?

The programme is designed to show that additives are designed to be used not just in older engines, but in the latest vehicle models, too It demonstrates that additives can be employed not only as simple pre-maintenance products, but also to solve problems and to help support vehicle maintenance programmes over the long term

LOA technician, Nathan Owen, points out the value of the programme to both motor factors and workshops: “It helps us to get more information about additives into the garages. The young mechanics develop an appreciation that the additive approach can increase overall garage efficiency This also helps us to drive business towards the motor factors More importantly, it will continue to drive business towards the motor factors well into the future, as the young mechanics’ careers progress ”

Lucas Oil claimed that more experienced technicians have been trained to inspect the engine, diagnose the problem and to strip it down before fitting replacement parts The conflict is that the additive is designed to extend component life, while the technician’s instinctive solution is to remove and replace the component

Aspiring mechanics have been educated more towards the diagnostics approach, Lucas Oil reported They appreciate that problem solving additives, such as Lucas Oil Power Steering Stop Leak, are all about instigating an internal repair that will prolong the life of the steering rack They can understand the potential for a greener, more sustainable solution and the efficiencies that are involved from a workshop perspective

Nathan continued: “The reality is that (a) the vehicle owner may not be able to afford

a replacement and (b) the steering rack may not need to be replaced ”

Through the activities of the LOA, young technicians will learn to judge for themselves how additives can provide alternative solutions in the workshop Moreover, an additive solution is usually one that an owner can afford As well as finding the solution more acceptable, it is also a greener and more environmentally friendly alternative

E10 challenges: phase separation

Lucas Oil claimed that its Upper Cylinder Lubricant has a strong following among technicians wherever pre-MOT checks are being carried out This is thanks to its reputation for transforming engines with borderline emissions test failure levels into engines with comfortable pass standards Another fuel additive designed to combat

18 I PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR MARCH 2023 BUSINESS & TRAINING ACADEMY

the corrosive properties of ethanol is now keeping technicians abreast of changes in maintenance requirements that are a consequence of the tightening emissions standards and the introduction of E10 fuels

While higher levels of ethanol may be tolerated by some later cars, the ageing population of the UK vehicle parc means that many of the models built before 2012 that use E10 may now be experiencing problems with internal metal corrosion and rubber fuel pipe degradation Moreover, these are invisible issues

These and many later models are also exposed to problems relating to ‘phase separation’ of the fuel in the tank

Phase separation occurs when the hygroscopic nature (water absorption properties) of the ethanol causes water to mix with the fuel in the tank It causes the formation of a petrol fuel layer at the top of the tank and a separate ethanol/water layer on the bottom of the tank This layer can generate ignition and internal corrosion difficulties for the engine

LOA sessions are used to broadcast news about simple additive solutions for E10 problems, such as Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner When added to the fuel

tank, it combats the destructive action of the ethanol and helps to prevent fuel separation

Lucas Oil stated that motor factors with an eye for an opportunity have already spotted that this particular additive is an ideal product to sell as an on-board accessory If only standard E10 fuels are available, Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner is simply added to the tank to provide the engine and fuel system with complete protection

Exploding myths about additives

One of Lucas Oil’s bestselling additives is Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer The recommended ratio of oil to additive is 80/20 Used like this, it fortifies the engine oil and eliminates the dry starts that are responsible for most forms of engine damage caused by attrition

Nathan said: “It’s often thought that the additive is too thick for the engine It’s also sometimes assumed that by adding the recommended amount of additive, the engine won’t be getting enough oil

“In fact, as the thick stabiliser product is drawn through the engine, it provides an evenly distributed coating for all moving

parts Importantly, when the vehicle is inactive, the stabiliser continues to provide protection for moving parts long after the engine oil has drained down into the sump

“Mechanics shouldn’t be concerned if they can’t pour all the oil into the engine That 20% enhances lubrication, protects against dry starts and improves the overall oil performance

“Moreover, it’s a saving for the garage that goes straight onto the bottom line ”

Remanufacturing an industr y ‘on the up’

Born out of necessity – a scarcity of natural resources during the war meant car and truck parts had to be reused – remanufacturing has existed in some guise or another since the 1940s However, more recently, consumers have caught onto its benefits With quality, price and the environment top of a long list of selling points, demand for remanufacturing is surging

A point best illustrated by a 2022 report from research and consulting firm, Persistent Market Research According to it, the European automotive parts remanufacturing market is currently valued at just over £16 billion With annual growth in the region of 7% throughout the next decade, it is projected to reach more than £32 billion by 2033 – nearly doubling in the space of 10 years

The UK, one of the top two markets in

Europe, is expected to follow a similar trajectory, growing at an average annual rate of 7 2% in the same period Based on the SMMT’s £2 4 billion valuation back in 2019, and assuming remanufacturing held its own during the pandemic, this would put the UK market somewhere in the region of £5 to £6 billion by 2033

Carwood’s own numbers back up trend

In 2022 we delivered record aftermarket volumes, even with the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic still hampering our operations This year has got off to an even better start So, whichever way you look at it, remanufacturing is a big and clearly fast-growing market – and one that will present significant opportunities for you moving forwards, but what’s driving this growth?

Whilst growing consumer acceptance has played its part, there’s no doubt that the current economic climate is having a big impact Amid 40-year inflation highs, the result of a once in a lifetime pandemic and now a war in Ukraine, fuel, energy and food costs are going up like never before Because of this, already cost-conscious consumers are having to cut back on all but necessary expenditure

As an example, in a 2022 study by the Motor Ombudsman, over half the respondents with no service plan in place, acknowledged that they are planning to either miss, or delay their car’s annual service in order to save money As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, the reality is that this number will only get larger

Since fuel pumps, injectors, turbochargers etc are typically a distress purchase, and, therefore, can’t be put off

TRENDS & ANALYSIS REMANUFACTURING
Amongst a backdrop of record inflation figures, spiralling energy costs and increasingly environmentally conscious consumers, the market for remanufacturing is soaring, according to Carwood. Here, its deputy managing director, Simon Quantrell, explains why demand for its “high-quality, affordable and sustainable parts” is growing – and what this means if you’re looking to follow suit.

Carwood doesn’t buy into the idea that you pay for what you get; no one should have to choose quality over price, service, or anything else come to that This is why Carwood has invested in OE test-equipment, parts, processes and know-how, to ensure it can return a part to its original condition, without the price tag or environmental footprint

There is no compromise; Carwood customers get the proven-quality product they expect, at a competitive price, and for an increasingly wide range of vehicles too

without significant consequences for the vehicle, it’s unlikely this will affect demand for remanufactured parts Any delays to routine servicing may, however, lead to premature wear and tear of critical components, and, therefore, earlier, and/or bigger, more costlier repairs in the future

What’s certain is that vehicle owners will look for more economical solutions when work is needed. And that’s where reman is the perfect solution for both of you By

reusing the core, it’s a lot more cost-effective than buying new, with savings of at least 25% compared to the original part

By returning a used part to the VM’s original specification, OE-approved remanufacturers, like Carwood, can ensure a product that’s just as good as new And by mirroring any updates the OEM has made to subsequent new parts, and/or incorporating its own engineering improvements, Carwood’s reman version is sometimes better than new

Finally, environmental concerns are contributing to the growing demand for remanufactured products Indeed, in a recent UK report by Deloitte, more than 40% said they would choose brands that have environmentally sustainable practices and values And although this may not be the main reason, it’s another big plus for reman Using 70% less material and 85% less energy are powerful reasons on their own

In summary

Combine quality, price, sustainability and rapid market growth predicted, remanufacturing represents an exciting opportunity for the aftermarket Most, if not every VM, already has its own reman parts programme in place – the likes of Jaguar Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and CAT are supplied by Carwood

TALK OF THETRADE

First up, NGK shed light on the progress of its new training initiative The ignition and sensor specialist launched NGK Academy last November, and it has already attracted scores of independent workshops eager to improve their vehicle knowledge 24/7, 365 days of the year

“Automotive technology is changing rapidly, and NGK Academy will help technicians deal with the complex challenges that they face, which can help enable them to continue to have a successful career in the automotive industry for many years.”

One of the major attributes of NGK Academy is the fact that as it is available online 24/7, 365 days of the year, training can be undertaken during downtime in the workshop which means there is no negative impact on business

OVA Managing Director, Ben Stockton, said: “NGK Academy is designed to increase technicians’ knowledge by providing the detailed information they need to fully understand the subject matter

“In addition to the NGK training videos, it has purchased access to more than 270 training videos for hundreds of their customers on a wide range of topics including EVs

“It has been very well received We have delivered hundreds of training courses and it is growing on a daily basis ”

Tools specialist, Sealey, gave its advice on maintaining and looking after tools in a workshop:

“One way to extend the life of your tools is by properly caring for them If you neglect your equipment, you may end up having to buy new tools sooner than expected, resulting in unnecessary costs for your workshop

“It is also good practice to inspect your tools after every use This involves checking for loose fixings, and cracks on power tool handles, and removing any sign of rust and corrosion Sealey’s range of lubricants and aerosols can help with corrosion protection, including its SCS201 rust remover, SCS010S maintenance lubricant, SCS019S fine oil lubricant, and SCS012S clear grease lubricant ”

Sealey also advised that if the tool is beyond maintenance or repair, it’s crucial to replace it before further use Defective tools and equipment are a major cause of injuries. Power tools are standard in many industries since they make work easier and help to perform tasks with more accuracy and precision However, a defect in these tools can significantly impact workers’ safety WWW RDR LINK/FFS008

Talk of the Trade returns for another instalment! This time around, we’ve taken PMM articles that are attributed to NGK, Kalimex and Sealey. Meanwhile, the magazine’s editor, Kieran Nee, produced a piece on the benefits and challenges of the remanufacturing process.

Kalimex, the UK distributor of JLM Lubricants products, argued that DPF specialists should take special care amidst the cost of living crisis to ensure customers aren’t hit with a hefty bill to replace their DPFs

With new car sales falling and motorists keeping their cars on the road for longer, the professional motor mechanic holds the keys to long term vehicle vitality. In recent years, there has been a migration from parts to products as reliable vehicle fixes, not to mention the emergence of ‘repair over replace’, claimed Kalimex

Underpinning all this is recent research confirming that motorists

PMM’s editor, Kieran Nee, asked three remanufacturers to share their knowledge and expertise to highlight the benefits and challenges of the remanufacturing process – so what advantages, exactly, can this process bring to the aftermarket?

Remanufacturing’s OE credentials are something that the companies Kieran spoke to all emphasised

Autoelectro UK Sales Manager, Nick Hood (right), pointed out that “because the original OE body remains, mechanics can rely on an accurate fit” and added the importance of technical knowledge: “Understanding how a part, like a starter motor or alternator, operates and why it fails is invaluable; it enables us to support a workshop with technical information that it wouldn’t otherwise receive from a spurious source that imports new units ”

Environmental benefits also play a part, as explained by Shaftec’s Adrian

trust their mechanic to suggest highquality additives and lubricants, and they expect these products to be “top tier, not bargain basement”

Kalimex Managing Director, Mike Schlup, said: “The independent professional motor mechanic is in effect the fourth emergency service And for those workshops offering DPF services, they should have the JLM Lubricants range of DPF products centre stage Because even the most badly blocked DPF can be cleaned on the vehicle and restored to normal settings – without a forced regen in sight ”

Comline is an international brand, one that trades to more than 50 countries worldwide, but what is it about this organisation, steeped in more than 30 years of history, that catches the eye? To find out, Auto Parts Direct’s Neil Greenidge – who is based in Barbados! –offers his view.

Comline blossoming as an interna tional success stor y

Neil had retired after a career as an entrepreneur, sailed off into the sunset and relocated to Barbados; however, he quickly realised that he wasn’t ready to hang up his briefcase just yet!

He said: “This venture actually started when I took my own car to a garage; the mechanic assessed the vehicle and gave me a list of parts that I needed to buy from the local shop – ultimately, buy my own parts!

“This gave me an idea; I spoke to a friend who owns a garage on the island, and it quickly became clear that there was a need for a distributor that would stock and sell parts, then deliver them to garages around the island

“The Auto Parts Direct model is similar to that of wholesale distributors in the UK;

we have a large warehouse and logistics facility, a fleet of vans and drivers that deliver – but it’s a completely new concept in this part of the world!

“In terms of parts, as a new company in Barbados, we needed to stand out – afterall, a company is only as good as its reputation! This stems from quality parts and great customer service After being referred to Comline, I’m pleased to say that we’ve been able to uphold that philosophy – the brand’s concept of quality products is aligned to ours and what we wanted to sell ”

Comline is a multi-national and multi-site operation, with its global headquarters based in Luton and distribution sites in Greece, Ireland and Spain These choreographed locations allow Comline to

service its network of aftermarket partners – one of which, of course, is Barbados!

What Comline parts does Auto Parts Direct sell?

Neil claimed that recent years had seen a significant number of imported vehicles onto the island from the UK, mainly because both countries drive on the righthand side; however, despite the influx of European cars, he revealed that the majority of vehicles being driven on the island are Japanese – namely, pick-up trucks, such as the Nissan Navara, Isuzu DMax and Toyota Hilux That said, one of the most popular vehicles is the Suzuki Swift!

With a diverse car parc, which varies significantly in age, Auto Parts Direct stocks a complete range of service kits,

Neil Greenidge (second from the left) and the Auto Parts Direct team

including oils and filters, as well as steering and suspension parts covering rack ends, tie rod ends, stabiliser links, plus brake pads and discs

Neil said: “The Comline brand has been very well received; Barbados, like Comline, has a history of motorsport with Rally Barbados now in its 65th year, which I think has helped with acceptance We’re selling

a lot of products, in particular, oil, suspension and braking parts The feedback has been outstanding amongst the general population, as well as car enthusiasts and the motor trade, and long may it continue!

“There is ample demand; as such, the biggest challenge we’ve had is fulfilling orders quickly enough! From ordering to stocking parts on the shelf, the average turnaround time is 12 days. What’s more, we’ve received requests from other territories, like St Lucia, St Vincent and Dominica, and that’s a great sign for the future collaboration between Auto Parts Direct and Comline ”

Comline customer service ticking the boxes

Neil claimed that the car industry in Barbados has suffered with an influx of spurious parts in the past, leading to “two ends of the market” – but with Comline “we’ve brought in a quality product without

the consumer having to pay an astronomical price to purchase – it’s the perfect balance!”

He added: “It’s not just the product either; we have access to Comline’s marketing portal, and we’ve been sent videos to help our customers fit products, such as wiper blades and brake discs

“We have great relationships with Comline’s members of staff too; we’ve shared our car parc data and, in return, they help ‘fill the gaps’ in terms of what product we need to stock and are likely to sell. There have also been instances where we’ve requested a part that Comline doesn’t stock; that information is vital for the brand so it can develop the range and then we can sell the parts!”

While the relationship may be in its infancy and while there may be thousands of miles between the two brands, there is early and justified optimism that Comline is going to make an indelible mark in the Caribbean – in the same way that it has in the UK, Europe and beyond

SPECIAL REPORT

BG Automotive reveals its bestsellers to help factors get ahead of demand

BG Automotive (BGA)’s steering and suspension product development team has identified 24 “must-have” stock references for your business.

BGA reported its steering and suspension components use OE parameters and tolerances as the “mandatory minimum requirements” to pass its accredited quality controls in its UK headquarters and are now available at your disposal to be stocked.

Over one million steering and suspension components were shipped alone in 2022, which, BGA claimed, positions itself as an ideal choice to become your parts distributor in 2023 BGA releases new product references every month, ensuring that it remains competitive in the market

Steering and suspension components are vital in every vehicle, as they are responsible in ensuring the vehicle is able to be controlled and allows it to absorb shocks from imperfect road surfaces BGA stated that it is important to have the most common steering and suspension components stocked, to ensure that you are able to promptly accommodate any customer request

The suspension system of a vehicle is made up of several parts, including but not limited to track control arms, ball joints, stabiliser links, tie rod ends, bushes and strut mounts – which can be sourced directly from BGA

Control arms are especially susceptible to wearing out, as they are one of the main components of a suspension system When this occurs, the vehicle will likely experience alignment issues, wheel vibrations and may cause difficulty steering. It is extremely important to properly diagnose and be able to quickly replace any components as to not decimate customer safety

PROFESSIONAL MOTOR FACTOR MARCH 2023 I 29 STEERING & SUSPENSION

Streetwize emphasises importance of tyre health to help maximise steering and suspension lifecycle

Are tyres overlooked when it comes to vehicle maintenance? According to Streetwize Copywriter, Mayur Mistry, many motorists will invest time valeting their vehicles to give it a showroom finish, but tyre care will often be neglected and lead to breakdowns.

In fact, according to National Highways, more than 41,500 people broke down on National Highways roads in 2021 because of tyre issues – that is over 20% of all breakdowns

If you’re selling tyre maintenance

A tyre’s air pressure, if low, can greatly impact a vehicle’s handling, fuel economy and its steering and suspension If a vehicle’s tyre pressure is low, it will cause imbalance, and, possibly, force the driver to lose control of their vehicle

It is advised to check tyre pressures once-a-month To encourage your customers to look after their tyres, stock up on tyre pressure gauges, which are not only low-cost, but they can also be sold as add-ons when a consumer is about to pay for goods

Also, emphasise how important air compressors are for every vehicle Most

products to the public, then as retailers and suppliers, we should make the effort to educate consumers to ensure they look after their tyres, so that they last longer and provide optimum performance in terms of steering and suspension.

Below and across are a few ways in which motorists can be encouraged to look after their vehicle’s tyres – perhaps you recognise them?

air compressors are lightweight and compact so take up minimal space, and they even show a tyre’s air pressure too Plus, they provide a quicker inflation rate when compared to standard foot pumps.

Many air compressors are powered by a vehicle’s 12V socket, but there are also cordless air compressors on the market Streetwize has a selection of tyre pressure gauges and air compressors It supplies to both national and independent retailers across the UK and the world One of its air compressors is a cordless air compressor that can be charged via USB, allowing it to be charged at home or inside the car

Motorists should be made aware that if the tread depth was to fall below the minimum depth of 1 6mm, their vehicle will fail their MOT and they risk losing control of their vehicle when driving

It’s important to ensure that all motorists regularly check the depth of their tyre with a suitable tyre gauge, which is also available at Streetwize

Mind the load!

Motorists should be encouraged to check the maximum load of their vehicle before loading anything considerably heavier than usual, whether in their vehicle’s boot or mounting the load on the roof of the vehicle with suitable roof bars

If a vehicle is handling excessive weight, then it would not only wear the tyres quicker than normal, but it also increases the risk of tyre explosion!

Ultimately, if you sell roof bars and other travel storage accessories, motorists should be advised to refer to their vehicle handbook to know their vehicle’s maximum load weight

Tyre alignment

While this is something motorists can’t check on their own, motorists will be notified by their technician during their vehicle’s annual MOT or service if their tyres are misaligned

Tyres that are misaligned usually leads to uneven wear and poor fuel economy While misalignment of tyres is almost inevitable, the next tip should help minimise tyres from misaligning

Develop better driving habits

Little things, like being extra careful when driving over speed bumps and mounting kerbs, minimises the opportunity for tyres to misalign, while reducing wear and tears on tyres

Remember tyre care

Klarius: Cost-effective exhaust repair parts improve motor factor ser vice

As well as stocking a large range of aftermarket exhausts, Klarius also provides standalone flexi-pipes, pipe sections and mountings to support quick repairs. This means that you can further support workshop technicians in offering targeted, costsaving repairs for motorists, backed by Klarius knowhow and quality.

It’s no secret that many people are running on a tight budget these days, and that also applies to vehicle maintenance Exposed to temperamental road conditions all year-round, exhausts (even well-built ones) eventually fail Typically, a full system replacement can cost vehicle owners northward of a couple of hundred pounds However, if the damage is localised to the mountings or a pipe section, Klarius has a solution

Quality repairs well within budget

Klarius offers you access to specialised repair products for over 11,000 exhaust references, covering the vast majority of vehicles on European roads It provides you with the opportunity to upsell With more repair options available, specific parts can be ordered dependent on the condition of the exhaust, improving sales while keeping customers happy

Klarius Sales Director, James Ellison, said: “When it comes to effective and

speedy repairs, we think it’s important to support our customers with increased exhaust repair options

“While we would always recommend that major exhaust failures will require a full replacement, for cases where damage is repairable, this isn’t the right approach. Consequently, stockists and distributors can order a full range of replacement Klarius pipes and mountings for next-day delivery, helping garages to offer motorists a quick, quality and cost-effective solution that improves customer satisfaction ”

When repairs beat replacements

Pipes and mountings are two of the most common failure points on exhausts Pipes can be subjected to damage from impacts or corrosion. Flexi-pipes, which help accommodate movements in the system, can fail under mechanical stress Mountings can perish or corrode as they age, which can result in grimace-inducing clunks at best and the exhaust falling off at

worst All these problems are often solvable by replacing the specific components rather than fitting a completely new exhaust

Klarius claimed that having ready-made parts for service workshops means that these exhaust repairs can be completed quickly and to a high-quality standard Vehicle owners will be happy with the fast and cost-effective repair, while on the other hand, technicians will be pleased to free up some space on the ramp ahead of time and move onto the next job

Factoring in distributors

It increases options for you too! Pipes and mountings take up much less space than a full exhaust system, so can be easily stored in local inventory When receiving a call from a workshop customer, Klarius stated that you can react quicker to specific repairs, offering a more tailored solution For example, if a pipe repair is needed but the exhaust mountings are looking perished, both parts can be easily replaced together as preventative maintenance Consequently, a more serious exhaust

failure can be avoided in future James added: “By having a short conversation about what a technician is facing up on the ramp, motor factors now have the opportunity for a more tailored approach As well as providing a chance to upsell, it also means an improved exhaust repair service at all levels ”

A quick fix with quality

To ensure that its repair solutions offer a quality and accurate fit, every product in the Klarius range is tested in-house on

real-world vehicles of correct make, model and production year. Consequently, a ‘fit first time’ guarantee and two-year warranty are standard across the range All applicable parts are fully type-approved too, with Klarius promising that its products match or exceed OEM performance levels

Next-morning delivery is available across the UK, ensuring that even the most urgent exhaust repair can be supported
